Welcome to visit vermont, fall in the green mountains: harvest bounty & fiery colors.

Vermont is a place, but also a state of mind that revels in outdoor beauty, good food, and the preservation of unique small towns and cities. Visitors love Vermont for its colorful fall foliage; ski resorts including Killington, Smugglers' Notch, Ascutney, Stowe , and Mount Snow ; mountain vistas; and attractions for families and kids. Although Vermont is an inland state, there are wonderful beaches along Lake Champlain , along with many lakes, streams, and swimming holes.

Vermont regions and highlights :, central vermont.

In the center of this region is Green Mountain National Forest , which welcomes nature lovers all year. Major ski areas here include Killington, Okemo, Sugarbush, and Middlebury. Families can enjoy the outdoors and get hands-on with nature at Billings Farm & Museum and the Vermont Institute of Natural Science in Woodstock, VT , the New England Maple Museum in Rutland, VT . The state capitol of Montpelier, VT is fun and full of activity. The Vermont Country Store in Weston, VT is treasure house of nostalgic shopping.

Northeast Kingdom Region

The term Northeast Kingdom was a distinction first mentioned by former Governor George Aiken in the late 1940s to refer to the natural majestic beauty of the area, which follows the northern reaches of the Connecticut River alongside New Hampshire from St. Johnsbury, VT to the Canadian border, then east to the eastern edge of the Green Mountains at Jay Peak . Much of the area is pristine wilderness - great forests and hilly plains that provide the perfect setting for camping or hunting, dotted with glacial lakes including Lake Memphremagog , which stretches from the city of Newport, VT deep into Quebec, Canada.

Northern Vermont

In the state's northwestern corner you can find the dynamic city of Burlington, VT , right on the shore of lush Lake Champlain and a great place to be for good food, entertainment, a lake excursion or public festival . The nearby state capitol Montpelier, VT is the smallest, and one of the prettiest, in the entire country. (Please give them your support to help recover from the recent catastrophic flooding!) The ski areas here are among the most recognized names in the world for winter sports - Stowe and Smugglers' Notch, VT . Families and kids have plenty to do in the area, from a visit to the cows at the Ben & Jerry's factory in Waterbury, VT to a journey into history or science at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT .

Southern Vermont

A short drive from New York and Boston, Southern Vermont has a great mix of year-round outdoor activities , historic sites , outlet shopping, beautiful village greens, fall foliage, and covered bridges . The area's large ski areas at Stratton, Peru, West Dover and Londonderry, VT offer great family fun in summer as well as winter. Principal towns are Brattleboro, VT - artsy and bohemian; Bennington, VT - home of Norman Rockwell; and Manchester, VT - a historic resort town with great shopping.

Bakery, Sweets | Grandma Miller’s, South Londonderry

In a big red barn on a scenic stretch of Route 100, third-generation baker David Nunnikhoven and his crew turn sweet doughs and fine fruit and nut fillings into a delicious array of pies, cookies, horns, bars, buns, loaves, and much more. These treats may be purchased “for later,” but more than a few travelers wind up driving along with lemon square or Linzer heart crumbs in their laps.

Cocktail Spot | Au Comptoir , Woodstock

When it opened last year in a century-old cottage across from the Woodstock Welcome Center, Au Comptoir immediately stood out for its polished look and homey feel—a combination that will surprise no one who knows the owner, Zoe Zilian, aka the cofounder of Farmhouse Pottery. Zilian’s sensibilities can be seen everywhere from the decor (weathered brick, bare wood, white marble) to the thoughtfully curated menu of classic cocktails and small bites. The fresh floral arrangements, too, are a lovely touch.

Destination Brewery | Lawson’s Finest Liquids , Waitsfield

The liquid here is beer—the kind to rival cheese and maple as Vermont’s star commodity. In the heart of the Mad River Valley, where cyclists and skiers work up a mighty thirst, Lawson’s cozy taproom serves a heady array of IPAs, Pilsners, stouts, and porters with light fare to match, and a side of jazz, blues, and folk. Check the schedule for occasional beer-themed dinners and the ever-popular oyster and Irish stout Thursdays.

Foodie Experience | Esmeralda , Andover

Esquire , The New York Times , the James Beard Foundation—rarely does this kind of media attention surround food made at home, but Boston restaurateurs Maria Rondeau and JuanMa Calderón have created something truly special at their rural Vermont residence. Operating on select dates in summer and fall, Esmeralda brings Peruvian recipes and traditions to life in a setting that feels more like a dinner party than the estimable (and by-reservation-only) culinary experiment that it is.

Pizza | Pearl Street Pizza , Barre

The sight of split logs heaped alongside a tiled dome oven means just one thing: Vermont’s most Italian city has the pizza it deserves, with crusts that balance chewy and crisp, kissed with the fire’s light char. Here’s the classic Margherita, made with tomatoes grown in the shadow of Vesuvius; there are also veggie, white, and pan-style pies, along with a full bar and Italian wines. Dine indoors or feast Naples-style at tables along pedestrians-only Pearl Street.

Thai Restaurant | Saap , Randolph

Randolph knew it had a hidden restaurant gem but never suspected it would be discovered quite so spectacularly. Last year’s James Beard Award for best chef in the Northeast went to Saap’s Nisachon Morgan, who introduced Vermont palates to the cuisine of her native northern Thailand, with its complex flavor profiles that rely on ingredients like lemongrass, Kaffir lime leaf, galangal, and pickled vegetables. Don’t forget the sticky rice!

Wine Bar | Brix , Rutland

Peppered among the expected French, Italian, and California offerings at this cozy, brick-walled Merchants Row bistro are an Austrian red, a white from Spain’s Galicia, and a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Beer? The requisite Vermonters share space with Mexican quencher Pacifico and mighty Czech Pilsner Urquell. Match your glass with wild boar salami, Vermont cheeses, flatbreads, pasta, and steak. Go now, though, while you’ll feel as if it’s all for you, whether you’re sipping handcrafted cocktails in the hot tub or by the pool or rediscovering calm during a guided forest immersion in the surrounding 32-acre wood.

Romantic Overnight | Four Columns Inn , Newfane

The ideal romantic stay marries lodging and location. Serene Newfane, with its Federal-style homes, stately 1825 courthouse, and handsome inn, sets the standard. Stroll woods and gardens, then retreat to an exquisitely appointed room such as the third-floor Sugar Maple, with its fireplace and vast arched window topping the eponymous columns and framing the village green. Take a walk through a 100-foot-high forest canopy, learn about Vermont’s snakes and turtles, meet songbirds in a stroll-through aviary, and get up close with raptors (eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, and other birds of prey) at the woodsy VINS campus. Expert-led presentations feature 40 resident “raptor ambassadors,” rescue birds incapable of living in the wild but indoor stars at showing off their swoops, dives, and keen focus.

Dog Excursion | Dog Mountain , St. Johnsbury

Since it opened in 2000, no place in America—and likely the world—pays greater homage to the bond between dogs and humans than these 150 mountaintop acres created by artist Stephen Huneck and his wife, Gwen. Though the Hunecks have both passed on, their legacy continues. Leashes are optional as dogs romp across fields and swim in ponds. Be prepared: The tiny dog chapel adorned with photos and remembrances of pets will bring both wonder and tears.

Downtown Shopping | Montpelier

Vermont’s capital is an indie-shopping treasure, with two dozen small-scale retailers lining State, Main, and Langdon streets (chains are no-shows). Distinctive women’s wear? Try Rebel Heart, Splash Naturals, or Prana. Buy kids’ togs at Minikin or Zutano, and browse books at Bear Pond. Find vintage vinyl at Buch Spieler, and suit up for sport at Onion River Outdoors. Shopping is hungry work, and Montpelier’s restaurants are as refreshingly offbeat as the retail scene.

Factory Outlet | Johnson Woolen Mills, Johnson

In the beginning there was fleece—and it came from sheep, not recycled plastic. Woolen clothing is a Vermont mainstay, and the folks in Johnson have been making it for 180 years. Tailored on the same premises where the shop itself sits, the coats, jackets, vests, scarves, and famous plaid “Adirondack pants” have seen generations of New Englanders through deep winters in the deep woods.

Historic Theater | Barre Opera House , Barre

Back in 1899, the “granite capital of the world” celebrated a double-decker achievement: a new city hall, topped with a posh opera house. Once welcoming the likes of George M. Cohan and John Philip Sousa but later abandoned, the Barre Opera House has been splendidly restored. It now hosts acts such as French-Canadian folk ensemble Le Vent du Nord and comedian Bob Marley, and it serves as the home of the Vermont Philharmonic.

Mountain Biking Spot | Ascutney Trails, Brownsville

No, Kingdom Trails partisans, we’re not at the wrong end of the state here: Southern Vermont, too, boasts a first-class venue for mountain biking. Thirty-five miles of well-maintained trails thread the base and western elevation of Mount Ascutney, with four trailheads offering access to single- and double-track routes. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders will all find challenges aplenty, amid gorgeous forest scenery.

Museum Collection | Shelburne Museum Circus Parade, Shelburne

A perennial favorite among the Shelburne Museum’s eclectic holdings is the Arnold Circus parade, a hand-carved homage to the glory days of the Big Top. The 4,000 figures—animals, clowns, trapeze artists, ringmasters, and their colorful props and wagons, all fashioned in 1/12 scale—prance along the length of a 518-foot, horseshoe-shaped building. Outside, ride hand-painted horses on a vintage carousel.

Stargazing Spot | Spitzer Planetarium , St. Johnsbury

“Stellar” is the obvious word for the celestial projections at Vermont’s only planetarium, situated atop the Fairbanks Museum. But the Spitzer’s state-of-the-art digital presentations also include dome-wide videos on astronomy, weather phenomena, natural history, and NASA’s latest explorations. Special programs are narrated by professional astronomers and weather experts, including Vermont Public Radio’s “Eye on the Sky” team, headquartered at the Fairbanks.

Summer Performances | Farm to Ballet Project , various locations

Born from the idea of bringing classical dance to rural Vermont, Farm to Ballet is a series of joyful outdoor performances starring dancing vegetables, barnyard animals, and even the seasons themselves. Against the backdrop of such beautiful venues as Retreat Farm, Champlain Orchards, and Shelburne Farms, dancers from Ballet Vermont weave together a story that speaks to our relationship to the land. Summer will – hopefully – start hotting up in july, and whether you’re keen on a greek island getaway or some turkish delight, here’s some inspiration for your break, article bookmarked.

With the general election taking place on 4 July, you’ve got plenty of opportunities afterwards to take a summer holiday before schools break up later in the month and prices start to shoot through the roof.

With the British spring doing its usual stop-start thing, you might want to look further afield for some summertime sunshine and warmth.

Spend a week in one of Italy ’s quieter and lesser-known lakes in an elegant waterside hotel, or escape to a Greek island and feast on grilled meats by the Ionian Sea. Hole up in a Turkish bolthole overlooking the Aegean, or follow in the BBC’s Race Across the World ’s footsteps in Malaysia .

Stay closer to home with hikes in the Lake District or spend days on sandy beaches in North Devon . Whatever type of holiday you’re planning in July, some of these ideas will inspire you.

Travelers are booking open-jaw flights to Europe to save money and extend trips. A travel advisor explains how it works.

• The flights land in one city and depart from another, making it easy to visit multiple destinations.
• Open-jaw flights offer flexibility and are typically cheaper than round-trip options.

When traveling through Europe , many tourists like to maximize their trip by hitting more than one destination. It's easy to visit multiple countries in one trip thanks to the continent's massive, convenient train system .

According to Sonia Bhagwan, the owner and senior travel agent at Dreaming of Sun — Dream Vacations , vacationers can save a lot on airfare by booking open-jaw flights — a method of traveling where you fly into one city and out of another, rather than booking a round-trip flight and returning to the first destination.

"In past years, round-trip flights were the most economical," she told BI. "But in the past nine months, open-jaw flights have been less expensive and offer additional flexibility for seeing multiple destinations without being rushed."

Bhagwan told BI that she often suggests open-jaw flights for clients, especially those traveling to Europe. She said they're most popular for trips to England, Spain, and Italy.

"A solid 75% of my families traveling to Europe use this method to maximize their time and money spent," Bhagwan said. "Most times, it will save them a few thousand dollars."

How to book an open-jaw flight

When searching for an open-jaw flight, don't hit the "one-way" tab. Instead, on most search engines, you'll find an option labeled "multi-city."

According to a Google Flights search for about six months in advance, it costs about $700 with the multi-city tool to fly from NYC to Rome and then from Barcelona back to NYC. But with the one-way tool, it's nearly $1,000. And a train from Rome to Barcelona may cost around $80, according to Rail Europe , so open-jaw flights would save $220.

Some savings can be even greater. In another search in the same timeframe, flying from Indianapolis to Paris and then from Madrid back to Indianapolis would cost about $930 with the multi-city tool and $1,600 with the one-way tool. Factor in a $65 train ticket, according to Rail Europe , and you'd save about $600.

Considering that these prices reflect just one person, it's easy to see how families can save thousands.

How to maximize money saved

According to Bhagwan, the best way to book an open-jaw flight is to start searching between four and six months in advance.

"Eyeball the flight prices for a few days to get a sense of the going rate. Then start looking at those same routes weekly," she said. "You will get a sense of when prices increase and decrease."

Bhagwan says it's usually cheapest to book on a Sunday night.

"This is when new flights get added into the rotation, and prices typically are at their lowest — but not always," she said. "If the price seems high, wait a week and search again."

Bhagwan also suggests booking flexible or refundable rates directly through the airline's website.

"This is best because that allows you to change flights if you see a price drop a few weeks later," she added.

Traveling to Europe can be expensive, but open-jaw flights can make them more affordable when visiting multiple cities.

Headout Buys AI Startup Dabble to Boost Travel Experiences Search

In a strategic acquisition, Headout looks to enhance its AI capabilities by integrating Dabble.

Headout , which runs an app to help travelers book experiences, said Friday it had acquired Dabble , a startup that helps companies use artificial intelligence (AI) more effectively.

Headout had already been using AI for content creation, fraud prevention, and price-setting. Its platform covers 125 cities worldwide and serves more than 27 million people. The company said it turned profitable in 2021 and that it raised more than $40 million in venture capital in 2022.

Dabble launched in 2021 and works with e-commerce sites like Amazon, Wayfair, Pottery Barn, and Etsy. It helps companies accelerate content creation, create better work pipelines, and build more accurate models for products. The company went through the Y Combinator startup program. 

Headout’s co-founder and CEO, Varun Khona, said he couldn’t publicize how his company will use Dabble’s expertise just yet.

“We will have something meaningful to share later in the year as a big launch,” he said.

For now, Khona shared three big themes: personalization, immersive media, and creating new experiences “with AI at the center of it all.”

AI’s streamlining potential

Industry experts see potential for AI to help small travel-experience businesses bolster their operations.

“Experiences is the most diverse, most fragmented travel sector,” said Douglas Quinby, co-founder and CEO of Arival , adding that the vast majority of operators are small or micro businesses that have varying levels of technology adoption.

The industry has particularly high expectations of AI to help with discovery and recommendations, according to Quinby. “Travelers can be overwhelmed with choice. Viator alone offers more than 4,000 tours in Rome,” he said. “The hope is that smart AI tools could offer a better recommendation engine.”

Craig Everett, CEO of Holibob , which provides booking technology to online sellers of travel and tourism boards, said that AI can help customers navigate this fragmented and overwhelming landscape of options.

He added that Headout is focusing on providing customers with quality over quantity. “Rather than overwhelm customers with choice, they’ve smartly pre-curated what travelers see,” Everett said. “The next step, and something we’re working hard on, is building the relevancy on top of that product quality to even further help travelers narrow in on the perfect things for their trip.”
