Tour description

Spend one perfect day exploring venice’s charming islands and enjoying vip treatment..

This Murano & Burano tour takes you away from the crowds of central Venice to the city's outlying islands, bursting with authentic history and culture. Explore Burano and Murano by private boat, complete with an exclusive wine tasting at a Michelin Star restaurant and a private glassblowing demonstration.

Say buongiorno to your guide and small group in central Venice, then enjoy a short walk through a picturesque neighborhood to your boat to begin your Murano & Burano tour. You’ll make a brief stop along the way for a photo op at one of Venice’s most recognizable spots.

Once aboard the private boat, you’ll slip away from the city center and catch breathtaking views from the water. Pass by legendary sights such as St. Mark’s Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Throughout the pleasant hour-long ride, your guide will also point out some lesser-known gems that you’ll want to explore during the rest of your time in the city.

Explore picture-perfect Burano with a knowledgeable guide.

You’ll disembark at Burano and pop over to a secret vineyard—now part of a Michelin Star restaurant. Relax and enjoy the views of the vineyards from the restaurant’s stunning tasting room as you sip a glass of excellent white wine served with homemade snacks in an exclusive tasting that’s not available with any other operator.

After your VIP wine tasting, you'll discover the center of Burano Island, home to the famous colorful houses which have been the homes of Venice’s legendary lacemakers since the 16th century. Enjoy a stroll around the island with your guide, taking in the charming streets and sights like the old fish market (no longer in use) and the main church. After the guided portion of your visit, you’ll have the option to accompany your guide to a traditional lacemaking workshop or enjoy some free time on your own.

See Murano’s glassmaking tradition come to life.

Your next stop is the island of Murano, known for its respected tradition of glassmaking since the 13th century. After a 40-minute boat ride, you'll disembark on Murano and head into a formerly abandoned medieval church. Visited by Casanova and Venetian nobles in its heyday, this fascinating space is now a glassmaking workshop. Marvel at a private glassblowing demonstration and learn about the storied history of this local tradition.

After your Murano tour, you'll have some free time to explore the island. Finally, hop back aboard your private boat and we’ll have you back in central Venice by late afternoon. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Murano for a bit longer on your own, with instructions from your guide on how to make your way back to Venice via public transport.

You’ll return to Venice with a new perspective on the Floating City and some of its lesser-visited (yet no less charming) islands. Thanks to the stories from your guide that bring the islands and their traditions to life, your Murano & Burano tour will provide you with a greater appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the lagoon.

Please note that this description is an example and your experience may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent experience.

This was a GREAT tour - we had a private boat to take us first to Vanessa winery on Burano and then explored Burano. Manuela brought us to see a lace demonstration as well. We then got back on the boat and went to Murano to see a glass blowing demonstration. Manuela was so friendly and knowledgeable. The group size was also perfect. Can't wait to book another tour with these companies!

Burano and Murano Tour with Private Boat

about 4 hours

Private Boat Ride

Pick up at your hotel*, flexible starting time, professional guides, activity level, sights included.

Burano and Murano Tour

Special thanks to Anna Maria, Cristina and Desiree for the pictures

Tour Description

Book our Burano and Murano Tour and discover the two most picturesque islands in Venice’s Lagoon! Private boat, pick up, and drop off included.

Most of the visitors explore only the main islands of Venice’s Lagoon and see highlights like St. Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace.

Just a small percentage go beyond and visit the gorgeous islands of Murano and Burano. Be the minority and take advantage of our customized service.

1. Murano: the “Island of Glass”

Murano has a very interesting past. Despite its proximity to Venice, during some periods of its long history, it was independent from Venice, having its own rulers and laws.

The city of Murano actually counts seven islands, separated by canals and connected by bridges, and it boasts of some important sights like the Duomo and the famous lighthouse.

Your guide will pick you up at your hotel and, together, you’ll get on a lovely private boat.

Your skipper will allow you to reach Murano in about 30-45 minutes, and you’ll see a large part of the Lagoon from a privileged point of view: the sea.

Your Burano and Murano tour will continue with a walk through the center of Murano so that you can get a feeling of daily life and the main attraction of the island.

Your guide will tell you about the history of Murano, and you will learn about its most important product: glass.

Since 1291, the production of Venice’s glass was moved to Murano, mostly to protect the main and overcrowded city from the devastating fires which were often an unexpected consequence of glass-making.

This is how Murano became the “island of glass” ; your guide will lead you through the “Rio dei Vetrai” and, if you want, take you to one of the best shops in town.

You will not only be able to take a look at their products but even see part of the glass-making process.

2. Burano: the “Island of Colors”

During the second part of your Murano and Burano Tour, your skipper and your guide will take you to Burano, the “Island of Colors”.

Burano is smaller than Murano, and further away from Venice. But, it’s a very recognizable town, worldwide famous for its colorful houses.

The reason why Burano has such colorful buildings is still mysterious.

In the past, most of the inhabitants of Burano were fishermen. Venice’s Lagoon is famous for its foggy weather during the winter, and that could explain the vivid colors of the buildings.

It was probably the fishermen who decided to paint their homes with unique colors that helped them find their households more easily.

But, Burano is not only famous for its buildings; since the 1500s, the town has developed a great tradition of lace . A legend – of course! – explains the beginning of this elegant tradition.

A fisherman who was sailing outside of the Lagoon met a siren, who tried to seduce him with her beautiful singing. But, he resisted, and the queen of sirens gave him a magic gift: a veil made with the foam of the sea.

The fisherman went back home and donated it to her fiancée. The other girls in Burano, jealous of her veil, tried to imitate it and invented the lace.

Your guide will show you the most picturesque corners of the islands, and its most romantic canals, and tell you more stories about this enchanted island.

Then, you’ll get back on your private boat and return to Venice.

If you’re spending a few days in Venice, take advantage of our customized Burano and Murano Tour, and explore these two lovely islands with a professional guide and a private skipper.

*Pick up is included only if you’re staying within the pick up area . If your hotel is not in the pick up area, let us know and we will find the best solution.

This is the price for groups from one to six people. If you have more people in your group, please let us know and we’ll create a customized price.

You'll meet your friendly local guide in St. Mark's Square, and soon you'll be cruising to these picturesque islands on a private speedboat. Next, visit the colorful nearby island of Burano, where you'll see a centuries-old lacemaking demonstration not available to the public.

Your 4-hour tour includes:

Round trip transportation from Venice by private boat

Tour and glassblowing demonstration in Murano

Tour and lacemaking demonstration in Burano

Friendly, English-speaking guide

Maximum group size of 22

After meeting your small group in St. Mark's Square, your adventure begins with a short and comfortable boat ride to Murano. There’s a lot to see on the way, and your guide will keep you entertained with stories of the sites you sail past. Soon enough, you'll arrive in beautiful Murano, a small island world-famous for its glass.

Once upon a time Murano glassblowers were the only people in Europe who knew how to create a mirror, and their skills were so valued that they were banned from leaving the city of Venice under threat of execution. The artisans are allowed to leave the island now of course, but the craft has stayed the same and you'll witness it first-hand at our first stop—a glassblower’s workshop.

Witness a master craftsman in motion as he conducts his daily tasks, while receiving a detailed explanation of the process. What gives the glass its color? How does silica sand become glass? Which is the most difficult part of his job? All your questions will be answered throughout the demo, as this is a real, working studio and your experience here will be as authentic as it comes. Afterwards you'll have time to browse the huge collection of glass art in the show room or wander the island on your own for a while.

Being an island and subject to problems related to high water, the gondola or boat tour cannot be guaranteed due to force majeure.

Our next stop is the colorful island of Burano, you'll be struck immediately by its old-world charm. Huddled tightly together along streets and canals, each house is painted a different color, with laundry strung up across the narrow streets. Legend has it that fishermen started this trend, painting their houses in bright shades so that they could see home from a distance.

However, Burano’s major claim to fame is its ancient tradition of lacemaking. Your guide will take you through the streets of Burano to a small building where women sit and stitch lace like their mothers and grandmothers before them. They only demonstrate for tours, so this is your best bet to see them in action! Stay and watch their painstaking work, and hear how, in the age of sewing machines, these traditional methods are unique and highly sought-after.

When Michelangelo visited Burano he bought an altarpiece for the brand new Duomo in Milan, and there's no shortage of wonderful artisan shops to explore today either. You can spend your free time in the island winding your way along the kaleidoscopic streets and taking in the ambiance. We'd recommend trying the local cookies for one of the island's bakeries too—delicious!

Tour Description

Murano: the centre of the glassmaking industry for 700 years.

We’ll begin our journey on beautiful Murano , actually a series of 7 islands linked by bridges perched in the heart of the Venetian lagoon. In the 13 th century the glassmakers of Venice were moved en-masse to this remote spot to guard against devastating fires caused by their furnaces belching out smoke into the densely populated city, and 800 years later Murano glass is still one of the world’s most famous artisan products.

During our stop on the island we’ll learn all about the special glass-blowing technique brought to Venice from the Orient by returning traders and perfected over the centuries in the island’s charming glass museum, before seeing the works of the modern-day artisans keeping the traditions alive in their nearby ateliers today. If you wish, we'll also be able to arrange a glass-blowing demonstration  where you'll get to see the incredible technique that magically turns molten sand into crystal up close. Murano is also home to the oldest church in the Venetian lagoon, which we can visit on request - lavish Santa Maria e San Donato , whose 12th-century mosaic floor is a masterpiece of Byzantine art.

The Spectacular Painted Houses of Burano

Back on the water, we’ll chart a northward course towards the seductive island of Burano at the northern end of the lagoon. The incredibly picturesque brightly painted houses that line Burano’s narrow cobbled streets and waterways are a photographer’s dream, and the settlement even boasts its own leaning tower in the campanile of San Martino . According to popular folklore, the tradition of Burano’s brightly coloured houses can be traced back to the island’s fishermen seeking a foolproof way to find their ways home through the dense fogs of the Venetian winter. Burano is known throughout Italy for its tradition of lace-making, the island’s main industry as far back as the Renaissance, when Leonardo da Vinci dropped by to purchase some for an altarpiece destined for Milan cathedral. Not much has changed since Leonardo’s day – these intricate masterpieces are still made entirely by hand, craft elevated to the realm of high art.

Torcello: A Journey to the Cradle of Venetian Civilization

The final stop on our journey into the heart of the Venetian lagoon is also a journey back in time. The semi-deserted island of Torcello is the birthplace of Venetian civilization, where according to legend refugees fleeing Attila the Hun’s Barbarian hordes on the mainland arrived in the 7 th century, and was for centuries much more powerful than its younger neighbour across the lagoon.

The stagnant air of the lagoon and the increasing difficulty of navigating its waterways led to its slow and inevitable decline over the centuries, and these days it’s a sleepy place with just 13 full-time residents. But its extraordinary Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta , complete with spectacular Byzantine mosaics including a truly terrifying Last Judgement , is   a vivid reminder of the island’s former glory . An air of mystery hangs over this forgotten place, and on your visit you’ll also learn about the legends surrounding eerie historical sights like the Devil’s Bridge and Attila’s Chair .

if you would like to extend your time on the water and experience the rich culinary traditions of the lagoon with a gourmet lunch, contact us to ask us about our exclusive VIP Luxury Islands Excursion.

Beatrice Cantilena was our guide in Venice and the surrounding islands. The tour she arranged for Murano , Burano and Torcello was outstanding. Beatrice had arranged demonstrations of glass making in Murano as well as lace work in Burano. Amazing! Beatrice is so knowledgeable and tells you all these amazing things. She has such a warm and comfortable personality that we found to be so charming. (These traits were apparent in every guide we experienced with Through Eternity.) Beatrice also made sure that every water taxi or transport was where needed and when we needed it. We highly recommend Beatrice and especially Through Eternity tours. You will never regret choosing Through Eternity. Sincerely, Alan Gordon

The inside story

A memorable trip in the romantic city of Venice is not complete without a visit to the islands of Murano and Burano , which are part of the municipality's most famous Italian lagoon. You will need only a half day for this excursion, but our advice is to dedicate an entire day to fully enjoy the charm of these islands.

The name of Murano echoes around the world thanks to the art of its master glassmakers. The glass came to Venice around the year 1000 and, thanks to commercial relations with the East, the techniques of glassmaking reached the highest level. However, around the year 1100, due to pollution and the danger of fires, furnaces were banned from Venice and moved to the nearby island of Murano. Here families handed down the secrets of glass art from generation to generation. Nobody in the world has managed to equal them and still today the Murano Glass brand is a guarantee of excellence and creativity. On the island you can visit the kilns and the Glass Museum and see artisans at work, as well as buy nice souvenirs to take home in memory of your trip.

Another beautiful island in the Venetian Lagoon is Burano , one of the ten most colorful places in the world! An authentic feast for eyes and soul, this town enchants with the colourful facades of its houses, which are reflected in the water of the lagoon. Why does the island look so peculiar? A legend says that, during the winter season, Burano is shrouded in mist, so the fishermen decided to paint their houses with bright colours to recognize them more easily returning from the sea. Even today you can paint your own home: you just have to apply for a permit. The tradition of Burano is not only colour, but also lace made entirely by hand. This production of excellence began in the fifteenth century. Do not miss the Museum of Lace!

The spectacular island of Burano became famous for handcrafted lace making in the 16th century. Although lacemaking on the island declined in the 18th century, it was revived in the 19th century when a school of lacemaking opened. Today, craftswomen sit at the doors of their colorful houses and weave the most impressive lace. Enjoy strolling through the picturesque streets as you admire the colorful houses or stop at one of the islands famous restaurants, specializing in fresh seafood. The island is also home to the Lace Museum and many shops selling beautiful lace but make sure to check the authenticity if you decide to buy. Real Burano lace takes a long time to make and even the smallest piece can take weeks to finish so it's usually much more expensive.
