I remember sitting in an open-air cafe in Bali, Indonesia, ordering yet another glass of iced matcha latte while working on my laptop. It had been a year since I worked full-time as Kristin’s virtual assistant. Around me were people of my kind – graphic designers, video editors, and freelance writers, all working on their laptops. I thought to myself, what a cool world we live in!

Working remotely has been such a blessing. Whenever I get asked “So what do you do for a living?”, I often have to explain what in the world a virtual assistant is, and how I managed to score a job a million girls would kill for (Devil Wears Prada, anyone?).

So, what is a virtual assistant?

Many entrepreneurs and independent businesses employ virtual assistants to complete tasks they need support with, but do not need their employee to be on location. The job scope of a virtual assistant varies from one business to another, but in a nutshell, a virtual assistant is a personal, administrative, and/or executive assistant who can virtually (no pun intended) do anything to help make their employers’ lives easier, from a remote location.

What does a virtual assistant do (job scope and schedule)?

Virtual assistants tend to work on social media, emails, and administrative tasks, though the details of a VA’s job scope varies from one business to another. As a virtual assistant to a travel blogger, here’s what I do on a daily basis:

Social media management : I help design pins and IG Stories slides for Pinterest and Instagram , schedule posts on all platforms, consolidate comments and DMs we receive for Kristin to respond to, and contribute ideas to help boost our social media engagement. I also monitor our Facebook groups, BMTM Solo Female Traveler Connect and BMTM Female Travel Blogger Accelerator .
Email management : On a daily basis, we receive about 25-35 emails from companies, tourism boards, agencies, publishers, and readers. I pitch to and negotiate with those who are interested in a partnership with Be My Travel Muse, decline unsuitable proposals, and forward emails that need to be responded by Kristin personally.
Website management : We have a pretty awesome site – Planning a trip to a new country? We have destination guides and itineraries to close to 50 countries around the world. Traveling for the first time? We have a dedicated section with everything you need to know about solo female travel . Feeling spiritual? You can find all of our best spiritual blog posts here . I work on improving the site to help readers find the information needed as efficiently as possible.
Video management : I edit some of Kristin’s videos on her YouTube channel .
Administrative work : I provide statistics reports and send invoices to our clients, conduct research on destinations (I found these awesome off the beaten path places in Thailand ), help plan upcoming blog posts, create case studies, and provide support for any other kind of admin work Kristin needs help with.
Others : Since my boss is a serial entrepreneur, my job gets super interesting sometimes. We worked on the Photo Muse Masterclass , launched the BMTM Women’s Adventure Tours , and, more recently, an awesome clothing line, Wanderbabe Clothing . I love brainstorming ideas and watching her babies grow!

Here’s what a typical workday for me looks like:

8am : I am a morning person so I start my day early! Since there’s often a 15-hour time difference between Kristin and I, we communicate mainly via Asana and FB Messenger. I’d check both to prioritize my tasks for the day, followed by checking all of Be My Travel Muse’s social media platforms and doing the necessary scheduling for the day. I’d then respond to emails and create visuals for the new blog posts lined up for the rest of the week. 12pm : I tend to get into an afternoon daze after lunch, so I’d spend some hours away from work and chill for a bit. 4pm : Back to work. Refreshed from the afternoon break, I spend the next few hours working on any current projects we have in hand. 6pm : And work’s out!

What are the qualifications and requirements for a virtual assistant?

The qualifications required differ from one company to another. In general, administrative and computer skills are fundamental. Having another unique skill helps tremendously as well, like video editing, coding, and accounting.

But I personally think what matters more is your accountability, communication skills, and creativity. Working remotely means there’s no one to supervise you at work, and you need to hold yourself accountable and complete your tasks on time. Since you are not communicating with your employer in person, communication skills are also important to make sure that all information is being delivered correctly. Finally, being creative is a great bonus – The perfect sidekick should be able to stay proactive and see what others can’t see! You may be asked to brainstorm for new business ideas and create business proposals, so being able to think on your feet really helps.

How much can a virtual assistant earn?

Like all jobs, it depends on your skillset and experience, but on most job search sites, inexperienced virtual assistants are paid about $15/hour. With a more robust skillset and a couple of years of experience, you could make up to $30/hour.

While I work exclusively for Kristin, many virtual assistants support multiple businesses, and that’s how you can potentially earn high income with virtual assistance jobs.

How to find a virtual assistant job

I had been a Be My Travel Muse reader for a while when I saw her Facebook post looking for help on social media. My passion for solo female travel and curiosity for how a travel blog works scored me the job. As the business grew, she needed more support, and I joined as a full-time employee shortly after quitting my previous job.

So I’d say keep a lookout for such opportunities from your favourite entrepreneurs, because you never know. If you think it’s appropriate, you might wanna try reaching out to them directly to see if a position is open. There are also various platforms that connect virtual assistants to companies, including Upwork , Dynamite Jobs , PeoplePerHour , Flex Jobs , certain Facebook groups , and conferences like TravelCon .

What are the best things about being a virtual assistant?

Here comes the beautiful thing about working remotely – you can be based anywhere in the world (with stable Internet connection)! If you’ve always wanted to live on an island, you can move to Bali; if you like the city but want to keep living costs low, Lisbon is great; for somewhere cool and alternative, you’ve got Berlin – the options are just endless. While I am based home in Malaysia , as I prefer living close to my friends and family, I have the freedom to fly anywhere and stay there for as long as my visa allows me to. In the past 3 years, I have spent at least a month in Japan , Indonesia , Thailand , Taiwan , and Europe, exploring different places and cultures while working.

In addition, you will enjoy full control of your work schedule, as long as you can complete your tasks on time. This means that if you want to take a day off on Tuesday, you can. And because you don’t have to waste time on commuting and unproductive meetings, you can spend more time doing other important work and personal tasks. Since working as a VA, I am able to cook more and spend more time with my friends and family.

Being the Robin to your Batman/Batwoman, you can expect rapid growth in all kinds of experiences. My job opens my eyes to things I never knew before. I pick up new skills as I go, and I get paid to learn new things! The cherry on top was definitely the chance to travel to Thailand and Japan with Kristin as part of a partnership. It was the coolest thing ever!

When being a virtual assistant sucks

Like most remote jobs, it gets lonely. I sometimes miss having colleagues to chit-chat with, especially since I used to work in a large company. You will also need to be mindful of work-life balance, as it can be hard to draw a line when you work from home. While I try to stick to my work schedule, I do find myself checking emails and social media outside of working hours very often. In addition, many virtual assistants, or any remote workers for that matter, have less job security and benefits than most office jobs. You will also only get paid for the hours you put in work for, so this is a rewarding job only if you are willing to put in the effort.

Final word of advice

I’ve been working as a virtual assistant for close to 3 years now, and I love every minute of it. If you are planning to work remotely, I highly recommend giving virtual assistant jobs a shot. Personally, I think the most important thing about being a virtual assistant is to love the company, the work, and your employer. You are about to be the Robin to a Batman/Batwoman, and you will spend many, many hours assisting one person, so your life will be 10x easier if you enjoy doing things for them. Be ready to go above and beyond because your role is highly crucial!

In this blog post, we sat down with travel influencer, vlogger and creator of It’s a Travel OD , Andrea Valeria, to chat through how she found her virtual assistant and how it’s possible to work online in the travel niche without having to be a content creator yourself.

How does she do it? How does Andrea keep all her projects running plus keep up with her duties of posting and engaging on social media as a travel influencer?

3 Easy Steps To Break Into the Travel Influencer Niche

1. pick up content repurposing as a skill.

When Esther asked Andrea what skills she was looking for when hiring a virtual assistant, help with creative content repurposing came up again and again. Andrea noted that she “need(s) someone that is going to be creative and that is going to come to [her] with ideas.”

Although she has a lot of ideas herself, she understands the value of being able to “have someone who is looking at your business from the outside and take initiative and tell you what you might need.”

And even if someone has a lot of ideas, it’s not always easy to generate tangible representations of these ideas. Creating and maintaining multiple social platforms can be overwhelming for even the most skilled idea-generators.

Esther knows that content repurposing is the top skill requested from anyone seeking a virtual assistant, not just travel influencers—but the travel industry highlights visual storytelling. Content creation is a full-time job itself to remain relevant and connect with your followers. An influencer’s vision and brand are what attract potential partnerships with travel companies.

When Andrea was looking for help originally, she just needed someone to help with one project. However, when her virtual assistant from Esther’s 90 Day VA course pitched to her, she offered to help with that project and listed other services she could offer as well— services she knew Andrea needed, even if Andrea didn’t know herself yet.

Andrea realized that anything like researching or pitching to potential clients or creating social graphics was taking time away that she could dedicate to her true passion: vlogging and editing.

Sometimes potential clients don’t know they need a virtual assistant until you show them everything you can help them with. Don’t be afraid to pitch to your favorite role models or influencers. Outsourcing tasks to a virtual assistant allows them to focus on doing what they really love doing.

However, when pitching to clients, it’s also important to do your research.

2. Know the Influencer’s Brand

“She was super familiar with my brand,” Andrea told Esther when explaining how she knew her virtual assistant was a perfect fit.

This is an important aspect of working online or remotely. When you’re cold pitching to clients, or even when you’re referred to them through someone else, you should have a deep understanding of that client’s voice, imagery, colors, and anything else unique to them. If you’re submitting a portfolio, include pieces that speak directly to the client, whenever possible.

Andrea noted that when asking for help, she wanted someone who wasn’t only knowledgeable of her platform, but interested in the same things she is, too.

It’s important to find clients you can relate to and connect with. If you’re not interested in yoga but you’re pitching to a yoga instructor, you can definitely help her with some tasks, but you might not be the best match. It might be more difficult to suggest new ideas and help her take her business to the next level if you’re not both passionate about the impact the business will have.

Finding people who are interested in the same things you are will make your work as a virtual assistant more interesting, and you’ll better be able to serve the client. It’s a win-win.

3. Be Confident and Take Initiative

If you’ve built your portfolio with creative and intuitive samples, and you’ve researched your client’s brand, then you’re ready to pitch! So, do it with confidence.

Andrea appreciated that her virtual assistant created a comprehensive package with services and pricing, and told her how she could be of assistance. After seeing this, Andrea admitted, “I need[ed] more help than I thought.”

A lot of travel influencers don’t realize how much time they’re spending on mundane tasks, or maybe they do but aren’t sure how to outsource these tasks.

Maybe the influencer you want to work for loves blogging about her travels, but doesn’t enjoy creating social graphics, posting Instagram captions or responding to partner opportunities.

They need a virtual assistant like you!

And once they hire you, be confident in your skills! Don’t make the client hold your hand or walk you through every step of every project.

After getting familiar with the client’s brand and goals, start creating content with this knowledge. When you’re done, submit it to your client for feedback. It probably won’t be perfect the first time, but you’ll start learning along the way exactly what the client is looking for.

Travel influencers can be incredibly busy, especially if they’re traveling full-time. What if they could actually sleep on that overnight flight, rather than worrying about scheduling all of their social media posts? You can fill the need they never thought they had. Be bold and reach out to people you want to work with.

Even if they’re not looking or needing a virtual assistant at the moment, they might be able to refer you to a friend who does.

Andrea and Esther both agree you don’t have to be the face of your own travel business or vlogging channel to work while traveling the world. Instead, you can work for people who are already doing it.

If you can take a blog post and from that create a Facebook post, Instagram post with a killer caption, and a Pinterest graphic to match—you have what it takes to work with some of your favorite travel influencers. There have always been lots of different ways to make money while you are traveling, from bar jobs to working as an au pair or giving lessons in ski resorts. This sort of job will allow you to earn money in one location so that you can afford to pay for the stage of your travels.

But now that we’re all so used to working online, there is a whole new range of work-from-anywhere jobs and careers that allow you to work remotely, giving you the freedom to carry out your work anywhere. Hooray, gone are the days of the traditional office!

Remote workers can earn money while they’re working from apartments or hotels, bars or coffee shops, or co-working spaces. And if they decide to go back to their home country, they can carry on working there as well.

Remote work takes passion, time, and commitment, and it will often be hard work. But that freedom to travel and set your own schedule makes it all worthwhile.

Here are the best digital nomad jobs to get you started.

Best Remote Jobs For Travelers

Graphic designer.

If you have a passion for graphic design, you could use your skills to fund your digital nomad lifestyle.

Graphic designers can work remotely with clients around the world, on projects ranging from company logos and business cards to Pinterest pins and social media graphics.

It’s easy to find graphic design work on sites like Fiverr , Upwork , and Dribbble . It’s also a great idea to set up your own portfolio website where you can display samples of your best work to potential clients.

You may find that you have to set your hourly rate a little lower when you’re just starting out. But as you build your design portfolio and add more names to your client list, you’ll soon be able to raise your prices.

Web Developer

Pretty much every business and solopreneur needs their own website, even if they don’t actually sell products or services on the Internet.

So if you’re good at design and experienced in setting up WordPress installations or developing websites, being a website designer could be one of the best ways to earn money while traveling.

You’ll need access to a laptop and the Internet, and you might also need to be able to use software packages like Illustrator or Photoshop to create graphics.

You don’t need to be able to code websites from scratch, thanks to page builders like Wix and Squarespace and content management systems like WordPress. But being able to write and understand code can still be useful, so if you don’t have previous experience in HTML, PHP and CSS, you might want to take some online courses from sites like Codecademy .

It’s easy to build your own portfolio of work by creating sample websites or building sites for your friends. You can then find work on sites like Upwork and Fiverr .

Onine English Teacher

If you are a native English speaker, then you could find remote work teaching English online. There is high demand from individuals in countries such as South Korea looking to learn English as a second language.

Online English teachers often work with tutor services to deliver lessons to students over video chat. The students are often young kids or teenagers who use additional conversation practice with online English teachers to supplement their formal English lessons.

Classes tend to be fairly short, around 30 minutes, and there’s no testing or exam preparation involved.

Your students are likely to be in different time zones but as long as you can be flexible with timing, you can offer English lessons from anywhere. You will need to have access to a reliable Internet connection, a headset, and a fairly quiet location to carry out your lesson.

Online English teachers generally need to have a college degree, but this doesn’t necessarily have to be a Bachelor’s degree in English Language or Education.

You may also need a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification but many tutor services can help you to organize this if you don’t already have one.

Freelance Translator

Freelance translation is one of the best jobs for anyone fluent in a foreign language. All sorts of companies need translations for their websites, brochures, books, and much more.

Being a translator is a great job for travelers, and this type of job also tends to pay pretty well. While you’re traveling, you could offer translation services for local restaurants, tour providers, and visitor attractions.

As well as working locally, you can also provide online translation services, which can be a convenient way to work. The best places to find translation jobs are freelancing websites like Fiverr and Upwork, as well as other websites like Translators Base , which are specifically aimed at matching translators with clients.

Yoga Instructor

If you’re a qualified yoga instructor, you could use your skills to earn money by providing yoga classes. This can work well as a way of earning money remotely if you provide online yoga classes on Zoom or Skype, or you could upload videos to YouTube or Instagram.

Online travel agents sell vacations and tours to customers who don’t want to plan and book their own trips. You can work for a large travel agency or work for yourself as an independent travel agent, which is one of the best ways to work remotely as a digital nomad.

Your travel experience will put you in a good position to give people personalized advice on popular destinations, transport, and accommodation options. Clients will feel that they can trust your first-hand experience and that you will be able to offer more tailored advice.

Another benefit of working as an online travel agent is that you may be able to access familiarization (FAM) trips. These will allow you to get to know the tours and destinations that you are recommending to your clients and provide a great opportunity for free travel.

Virtual Assistant

A lot of small businesses and solo entrepreneurs keep their admin costs down by hiring freelance administrative assistants instead of employing in-house staff.

These Virtual Assistants carry out administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, sending emails, and providing customer support.

There is high demand for virtual assistant services and the work can easily be carried out over the Internet from any location in the world.

As a virtual administrative assistant, you can choose the services that you offer, which could include social media management, data entry, Search Engine Optimization, or even basic project manager services.

Of course, I had to include travel blogging in my list of remote jobs you can do from anywhere.

If you don’t already run your own travel blog, then this is a great way to build extra income while you are traveling.

Many people now turn to travel blogs and content creators rather than big travel sites to provide the information that they need.

They feel that they can trust the personal experiences and opinions of a travel blogger and by writing authentic blog posts based on your own travels, you can help them to plan their visit.

Travel bloggers can earn money through various avenues, such as joining ad networks, affiliate marketing, and publishing sponsored content. But, don’t assume that running a travel blog is an easy way to earn a living.

As well as writing blog posts, you’ll also need to learn many additional skills like search engine optimization if you want to actually make money.

If you’re starting out, the best way to fast-track your success is by taking travel blogging courses and attending travel blogger conferences . Networking is key to success in the industry.

Blogging is one of the best travel jobs, but it takes a lot of hard work to build and maintain an audience, so you will need to be very persistent. Many bloggers combine blogging with other digital nomad jobs like freelance writing or working as a social media manager to provide a steady income.

Affiliate Marketing

When you have established your blog and it is ranking well on search engines, affiliate marketing can be one of the best remote jobs for travelers.

Whatever sort of blog posts you write, you are sure to find relevant companies that offer affiliate partner programs for their products. Amazon has a very popular affiliate program, but it’s also worth checking out affiliate networks like Awin and Impact, which combine many programs all on one platform.

Once you have selected and been accepted into the affiliate program, you simply add the affiliate links to your blog posts or social media content.

Then whenever a reader clicks through and buys a product or service, you will earn a commission. The amount can vary greatly depending on the value of the sale, but this can be one of the best ways to cover your travel expenses.

You will need to learn how to select the best affiliate programs and how to create content that attracts readers and converts the sale. So it would be a great idea to invest in a good affiliate sales training course if you would like to earn money through affiliate marketing.

Digital Marketing

This type of work isn’t something that would suit all travelers, but if you have prior experience in marketing, you can provide digital marketing services from any location. You can work online with individuals, brands, and businesses to give them greater exposure and increase their sales.

You could choose to focus on marketing for the travel industry, working with national tourist boards, DMCs, or travel brands. The combination of your marketing experience and your personal experience as a traveler will help you to provide services that are a great match for their marketing needs.

Digital marketing isn’t something that you can pick up overnight, but if you need to hone your skills, you’ll find plenty of online courses and resources to help you set up a digital marketing business.

Freelance Travel writer

If you have a talent for travel writing, writing for travel publications could be a dream job for you.

Of course, it takes more than just good writing skills to be a freelance travel writer; you also need to have networking skills and to be able to pitch your ideas to editors.

But once you have the necessary skills, you can earn money remotely by writing articles for newspapers, magazines, websites and guidebooks.
