Royal Caribbean’s Liberty: Allure to Undergo Modernization

  • February 5, 2024

Allure of the Seas in Port

The Allure of the Seas is set to undergo a modernization project, Royal Caribbean Group’s President and CEO Jason Liberty revealed during the company’s fourth quarter earnings call.

After seeing its amplification project cancelled due to the pandemic in 2020, the 2010-built vessel is expected to undergo a major refurbishment during its upcoming drydock in early 2025.

“We are always modernizing [our fleet],” Liberty said. “We have Allure coming up and the actions we took on Oasis and some of the learnings on Icon are going to be on that modernization.

“We are always updating our ships to make sure they stay relevant and competitive,” he continued, noting that Royal Caribbean Group’s strategy includes a continued investment in its fleet.

According to Liberty, the upgrades are not only for the guest experience but are also on the environmental side

First announced in 2019, the Allure’s original refurbishment project was set to be completed before the ship’s summer program in the Mediterranean in 2020 .

The 58-day, $165 million drydock was part of a larger $1 billion modernization program called Royal Amplification.”

Several vessels of the company’s Voyager, Freedom and Oasis Class were refitted as part of the project, which was revealed in 2018.

In early 2020, however, the pandemic caused the postponement of the upcoming refits/

As part of its amplification, the Allure of the Seas was set to receive several new features including venues that debuted on the Quantum Class and newest Oasis Class ships.

The planned additions included a new set of waterslides, as well as updated dining venues, new specialty dining options and new bars and lounges.

What is a President’s cruise ?  We don’t normally sail on RC but just learned that our cruise in May on Allure of the Seas is a President’s cruise.

Just a big boondoggle cruise where the company president hangs out. There will be a lot of extra pomp and circumstance

You might very well get some free bling. I wanted to go but not at summer prices.

The Presidents cruise is Allure July 23, not in May

That's part of why I changed my mind about going. Plus the solo discount isnt good july and august. So the price is even higher. They picked a date when discounts dont apply as much.

If I was pinnacle then I think I might want to go.

Even as a Pinnacle it's something I avoid, because even in the lofty 700+ point club there is a pecking order.  The Loyalty Ambassadors dread these cruises, and they usually have to assign two LAs to work a President's Cruise.

They typically offer DP340 for these sailings but only for a limited time.

I tried to book it the day it was announced and my ta said dp340 wasnt valid. .. so if there was a limited time we are talking minutes or hours .. I saw the announcement the very first day. I trust my ta who is well known on cc when he said dp340 is not offered. If he said dp340 wasnt offered, I believe him.

This time imo they wanted the extra money.

After some negative feedback, they said that they would honor it.

Took a couple phone calls, but Ken worked it out for us. But ended up cancelling in the end.

The one cruise I will always stay away from! The arrogance in the suite/diamond lounges are bad enough on a regular cruise. 😂

I really like the President's cruise!

It draws all of those types you mention to one ship that week, leaving all of the other ships free of them.

It's a great time to cruise...on the other ships.

We were on the 2016 Allure and 2017 Freedom president cruises by mistake Didn't realise it was a president cruise and only booked by sail date in the caribbean and med Never again,  over run by self entitled  pinnacle  members Most venues  allocated to high up C&A people

The single supplement discount code for those with 340 C&A points and above.

Don't you get a Comped Hosted Shore Events, as well as many gifts, etc.?

I booked this cruise before it was the Presidents Cruise. No real option to change, so we are going to roll with it. I/m sure the Pins will be just fine. Treat them for what it is, they have status in a loyalty program, not life.

I'm with you there!  We booked this because the departure port and dates worked for picking up our twins from a California visit with family.  I learned that it was a Presidents Cruise after final payment date and will enjoy the cruise anyway.  I mean, my wife and I will be vacationing without our 16 year old daughters - how can that NOT be fun!

If you ever want to get the fisheye from someone, with a straight face, ask a Pinnacle level cruiser bedecked with  the tee shirts and jewelry that proclaims their lofty status if they ever had the desire to cruise on a more upmarket cruise line.

The reactions can be interesting, especially if you commiserate with them on their limited experience of what is available in the cruising world.

We will be on the cruise directly before the President's cruise. Hopefully, the ship will be in extra great shape as they prepare for the bigwigs to board the day we disembark! 🙂

Or they will be preparing for the following week and have areas closed off….

that's what I thought it would be.   Not for me.   Already know what it is like to have company brass on the ship.  I did the first full cruise from FLA when Harmony came over in 2016.

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US passenger shipping company, trademarked travel brand and subsidiary owned by Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). The 5500-passenger ship Allure OTS is among the world's top-largest and has a unique personality. Scattered throughout the mass of steel, glass, wood and trees are changes, such as new retail options (a Guess store), restaurants (a hot dog stand), shows ("Chicago") and a recognizable green ogre, donkey and penguins culled from the Dream Works films. The cruise line also added 3D viewing facilities to its movie offerings, iPod docks in each stateroom and passenger kiosks from which cruisers might print boarding passes and keep tabs on escalating onboard bills.

This is a vertical drop slide located in the Sports Zone's pool (aft-ship location). The experience starts with a walk across a plank into the jaws of an anglerfish and boarding one of the specially-designed mats. Slide mats are colored in black, each with an opening for the feet and a strap to hold on to. Follows the vertical drop (27-degree) some 92 ft / 28 m down to the Boardwalk. The average sliding time (from the top to the bottom) is 12-13 sec. The slide also features around 300 LED lights, special sound effects and various graffiti artworks.

Signage boards provide detailed info on all Central Park's trees and plants.

"Small wonders" are called a total of 42x telescope-like devices (positioned throughout the ship) displaying tiny 3D art pieces. Ask Guest Services staff for assistance to find them.

There's a secret fore-located/bow-facing sundeck on Deck 14 , accessed from the forward lifts by walking through the hallways. The large sundeck is flanked by two "bridge wings" (jetting off the ship's both sides/bow starboard and portside). Both bridge wings are open-air and with great seaviews but are also often very windy.

There are two "secret balconies" positioned close to the aft elevators on Deck 9 . Both balconies are small (each is furnished with a table and two chairs), overlook Central Park and are some of the best points to view the entire neighborhood.

Aft on Deck 6/Boardwalk there is a stern-facing viewing area accessed via a path that circles around the AquaTheater. This "secret area" offers great views of the ship’s wake (trace on the water surface), also provides great views of the entire neighborhood and has a shuffleboard.

By the Jogging Track (aft on Deck 5/Promenade ) there are several small seating areas fitted with all-weather Adirondack chairs (positioned near the railings).

Itineraries

Allure of the Seas itinerary program is based on 7-day Caribbean cruises leaving roundtrip from homeports in Florida USA ( Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral ). In 2015, Allure OTS was deployed in Europe (for the first time) for 7-day Western Mediterranean cruises leaving roundtrip from homeports Civitavecchia-Rome (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain) . On repositioning, the ship offers Transatlantic crossings between Europe and Florida.

Starting November 10, 2022, Allure OTS was homeported in Galveston Texas .

Starting October 30, 2023, Allure OTS has regularly scheduled 3-4-night short breaks (out of Port Canaveral/Orlando to The Bahamas' Nassau and CocoCay Island ) which made it the first Oasis-class liner to offer Caribbean mini-cruises. In July 2024, Allure OTS again changes homeport and starts turnaround operations out of Miami - operating the same Bahamian short break itineraries to Nassau and CocoCay.

Allure Of The Seas Wiki

Allure is Royal Caribbean's 2nd Oasis-class liner - with sisterships  Oasis ,  Harmony , Symphony and Wonder . Until Harmony's inauguration in 2016, Allure and Oasis were the world's biggest cruise vessels . Still, Allure was the bigger one - just 50 mm (nearly 2 inches) longer compared to Oasis. The hulls of both vessels were named in May 2008, following an online competition for proposing the best ship name.

Allure OTS is one of the few vessels named by a cartoon movie character. Her godmother is Princess Fiona, from the movie Shrek. The ceremony took place on the 28th of November, 2010 at Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale. After the naming ceremony, Allure set sail on her maiden voyage, on the 1st of December 2010, to both the East and the West Caribbean.

The ship has telescoping funnels to be able to sail across under bridges. Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships are the first cruise vessels to get a DNV Green Passport. On November 4, 2016, world's 3 largest passenger liners (Harmony, Allure and Oasis) convened off Florida's coast. The unique event was live-streamed officially by RCI, starting at approx 5 pm EST. The meeting at open sea coincided with the Harmony's arrival at Port Everglades (her US homeport), finishing a 13-night Transatlantic repositioning cruise from Barcelona to Florida (Oct 23 - Nov 5). The following aerial photo shows an Oasis-class vessel (as looked from above).

Allure OTS refurbishment 2025 review

In 2025, the vessel will be drydocked for a major (multi-million) refit and refurbishment project.

As a result, Allure OTS will receive several new facilities, venues and amenities including some signature ones from RCI's QUANTUM and OASIS-PLUS ships.

The upgrades will include new waterslides, redesigned dining venues, new specialty restaurants, bars and lounges.

More details are to be announced in the coming months

Allure OTS refurbishment 2020 review (Royal Amplified)

The ship's Royal Amplified drydock refurb in 2020 was originally scheduled for March 13 - May 9, but was postponed (due to the global health crisis/COVID pandemic) as all seaports (and shipyards) in Spain remained closed in March-April. Allure OTS' drydock 2020 was postponed and revised, with all the staterooms and venue upgrades paused and delayed until RCI's financial situation improves.

The revised drydocking project was estimated at ~EUR 16 million (~USD 17,5 M), including mainly hull and machinery maintenance works. By the original 58-day drydocking project (budgeted USD 165 million / EUR 148 million) at Navantia Shipyard (in Cadiz Spain ) were planned to be added new venues and staterooms, and many existing venues and onboard spaces to be extensively upgraded-redesigned and enhanced.

Aft on Deck 16 (entrance point) was installed the 10-story high waterslide "Ultimate Abyss".

Pool Deck (deck 15) was completely renovated-redesigned, also receiving "The Lime and Coconut" - 2-level poolside bar offering beverages (including cocktails), live DJ programming and outdoor music performances. Swimming pools' sunbathing areas received more shaded seating (daybeds, hammocks, swing seats, casitas / small wooden cabins). The Solarium (adults-only complex) was refreshed and two new whirlpools were added. "The Perfect Storm" (3 waterslides complex) has its entrance level on Deck 15.

On Deck 15, H2O Zone was completely redesigned to "Splashaway Bay" (outdoor playground/aqua park) with Splash Pad (for toddlers), 3 mini-waterslides, water attractions (cannons, fountains, pools) and two drench buckets. Also on Deck 15 was added "Portside BBQ" (a la carte restaurant for traditional American barbecue cuisine) and "El Loco Fresh" (food bar for made-to-order tacos, burritos, quesadillas, salads, salsas).

On Deck 14 was added Royal Escape Room (adventure gaming/team-building exercises). Replacing the Card Room, the new room is dedicated to "Mission Control: Apollo 18" (puzzle game themed after 1973's Apollo 18 moon mission). Forward on Deck 14 were added new staterooms (inside and panoramic oceanview). Forward on Deck 14, Adventure Ocean (kids complex) was completely refurbished-redesigned and enhanced with themed by activities rooms, including Play Place (indoor playground with climbable structures), The Workshop (science-technology fun and crafts-arts room), Arena (physical and interactive games), Hangout (teen-only lounge with gaming consoles, movies, music, outdoor sundeck), AO Babies (room for babies and toddlers), AO Junior (dedicated to kids 3-5 yo).

On Deck 6 (Boardwalk neighborhood) was added "Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade" featuring 80x large TVs and new activities (tabletop games, popular arcade games, gaming tournaments). The new sports bar has a VIP room (Owner's Box) and serves bar food and draught beers. Also on Deck 6 (aft) is now the Ultimate Abyss waterslide's landing area. Also on Deck 6 was added "Sugar Beach" (selling ice cream and 220+ types of candies) and "Beach Shop" (poolwear).

On Deck 5, the retail shopping complex was redesigned and new brand shops were added.

The new "Spotlight Karaoke" (bar lounge introduced on Oasis OTS) features a stage for singalongs and music trivia games, plus 2 private rooms (for parties) and themed nights.

Also new on Allure OTS are the Quantum-Class venues "Music Hall" (2-deck high dancing lounge with live band music, large dance floor, intimate seating) and "Bionic Bar by Makr Shakr" (served by 2 robotic bartenders). "Clash for the Crystal City" is a new laser tag game played at Studio B's Ice Rink (deck 3).

The list of new dining venues also includes "Giovanni's Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar" (fleet's first reimagined Giovanni's / family restaurant with an upgraded menu, hand-tossed pizzas, charcuterie/meat station, enhanced wine menu),

Allure OTS' 30-day drydocking was completed in mid-November 2020. The project was conducted by Palfinger Marine (1932-founded, Salzburg Austria -based company manufacturing deck equipment, ship-offshore cranes, winches, davit systems for lifeboats). The jobs were conducted at Navantia Shipyard (Cadiz Spain) and involved 23 Palfenger technicians. The ship's all 18 lifeboats and 20 winches were serviced. Each lifeboat has max capacity 370 people.

Why Royal Caribbean is about to own the market for short cruises from Florida

Gene Sloan

Call it the ultimate cruise ship for short weekend getaways.

When Royal Caribbean 's giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in 2024 with a series of three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral , Florida, it'll instantly shoot to the top of the list of the best ships available for short getaways in North America.

Not just to the top — but miles above its closest competitor.

The still-under-construction, 236,860-ton vessel, which will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world when it debuts, will be far bigger, newer and more amenity-filled than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In short, it'll be the ship that everybody wants — or should want — for a short cruise. And, for Royal Caribbean, that's the point of what some longtime industry watchers may have seen as an unusual first deployment for the vessel.

Cruise lines often assign their newest and biggest ships to longer seven-night sailings — a more lucrative market — and place older and smaller vessels on shorter runs. However, Royal Caribbean is taking the opposite approach with Utopia of the Seas.

In the great chess game that is ship deployment among the major cruise lines, Royal Caribbean's announcement Tuesday that Utopia of the Seas would focus on short sailings when it debuts in July 2024 was a king-killer move in the short-cruise market. A checkmate moment.

Aiming at first-time cruisers

Royal Caribbean's plans for Utopia of the Seas are all about drawing new customers who have never cruised before — or what is known as the "new-to-cruise" market.

People who are new to cruising are leery of booking long sailings in case they don't love cruising as much as they hoped. As a result, they tend to gravitate to short three- and four-night cruises where they can test the waters, so to speak. Until relatively recently, many of the ships devoted to such short sailings out of North American ports weren't the best the industry had to offer. To try the best ships, you had to book a longer sailing.

That all began to change in the last four years as Royal Caribbean began deploying some of its best vessels on short itineraries out of Florida, starting in 2019 with two snazzily upgraded vessels , Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas, and continuing this year with an announcement that one of the line's giant and much-loved Oasis-class vessels, Allure of the Seas, would begin short cruises out of Florida later this year .

allure of the seas president's cruise

Allure of the Seas is one of the biggest, most amenity-filled ships in the world, and its deployment on short cruises will be a game changer for the niche. However, the deployment of Utopia of the Seas on short cruises is even more game changing.

Of the five giant Oasis-class ships now sailing, which are the five biggest and most amenity-filled cruise ships currently at sea, Allure of the Seas is one of the oldest (it was unveiled nearly 13 years ago), and it's the only one that lacks a massive water park, a marquee feature for the series. It also lacks several other features found on newer Oasis-class ships.

The deployment of Utopia of the Seas on short cruises as its first mission after debuting in 2024 marks a first for Royal Caribbean. Never before has the line sent one of its new Oasis-class ships directly into short-cruise service.

"We've made a strategic shift to put our best products on short getaways," Royal Caribbean Chief Marketing Officer Kara Wallace told TPG this week. "Our goal really is to bring and attract the next generation of cruisers, and Utopia is a ship that will do that."

Noting that the shift in strategy goes back to the deployment of Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas on short cruises in 2019, Wallace said the idea was to "make that first impression, the best impression" with first-time cruisers.

Royal Caribbean has occasionally offered one-off short cruises on Oasis-class ships in the past as part of ship redeployments, and the sailings have always been a hit with customers, Wallace said. That, in part, gave the line "the confidence to ... move forward and make a move like this."

allure of the seas president's cruise

Another factor behind the move, says Wallace: Vacationers these days are increasingly eager for short getaways. There are a growing number of people who would rather take multiple short vacations in a year than just one or two longer vacations, she suggested.

"People are choosing to do more frequent shorter getaways, and if they want like a teaser, a sampler platter (of a cruise), Utopia of the Seas is it," she said.

As one of Royal Caribbean's newest and biggest ships, Utopia of the Seas will have nearly all of the most popular marquee features found on various ships across the Royal Caribbean fleet.

Like the five other Oasis-class vessels, Utopia of the Seas will have three separate pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, a surfing simulator, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on the top decks.

Inside the vessel, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine, plus two casinos, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows. It will even have indoor ice skating rinks.

In addition, as Royal Caribbean announced Tuesday, Utopia of the Seas will have several new-for-the-line venues, including an as-yet-unnamed dining experience that will draw on snazzy technology to create a "locomotive journey" as you dine. Royal Caribbean was coy about the latter concept but released the artist's rendering below as a tease of what customers can expect.

allure of the seas president's cruise

The line also said the pool areas of the vessel will have a "reimagined" look as compared to the pool areas on earlier Oasis-class ships, and the massive, 10-deck-high Ultimate Abyss dry slide that is a signature feature of several other Oasis-class ships will be 43 feet longer on Utopia of the Seas.

Wallace also hinted at two other tweaks to the Ultimate Abyss slide that could make it the most over-the-top slide experience at sea: the addition of "booster rollers" on its inside that will make riders go faster, and new transparent tube sections.

"People on the outside can see you going down the slide, and [riders] get that glimpse of daylight before it goes back to dark again," she said.

Two giant new Royal Caribbean ships on the way

Utopia of the Seas is just one of two giant new ships that Royal Caribbean plans to debut in 2024 — both among the biggest cruise vessels in the world.

The other new vessel, Icon of the Seas , will arrive in January 2024 and has been getting more press of late as it'll be the biggest cruise ship ever built.

Icon of the Seas also will boast a number of buzzworthy new features, as you can see in our sneak-peek video below. TPG's video team got exclusive access to the ship in May at the shipyard in Finland where it's being built.

Wallace said the two ships are aimed at two different markets. Icon of the Seas, which will do seven-night voyages out of Miami, is positioned as the "world's best family vacation" option, while Utopia of the Seas, which will sail from Port Canaveral, is the ship for the "world's biggest weekend."

"The exciting thing about them [is] that they're doing two different products out of two different markets," Wallace said. "Icon is really focused and doubling down on the family market, and Utopia is all about the weekend and the short getaway."

Utopia of the Seas will rotate between three-night sailings starting on Fridays that end on Monday mornings and four-night sailings that start on Mondays and end on Friday mornings.

All of the Utopia of the Seas sailings will include a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, which Wallace notes will turn the short cruise experience on the ship into a resort experience at an epic level.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

When you include Perfect Day's water park, pool and beach offerings, it's a trip where "there's not three slides [the number on Utopia of the Seas], there's actually 17 slides in a weekend. There's eight pools. There's six beaches," she said. "When you think about all of these things together, it really makes this the best possible short getaway there is."

Members of Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program will be able to book initial sailings for Utopia of the Seas starting Thursday. The ship's sailings will open to the general public for bookings Friday.
