Best time to visit switzerland.

May, June, September, and October are wonderful months for seeing Switzerland, as the weather is typically mild, the mountain passes are still open and the country is less crowded than in the peak holiday months of July and August.

It tends to rain more in the months of March, April, October, and November, and with snowfall usually present from December, this is the perfect time for skiers and snowboarders.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Switzerland shares borders with   Austria , Lichtenstein,   Italy ,   France , and   Germany .

A highly mountainous country, Switzerland's best-known ranges are the Alps in the south, with the mighty Matterhorn and iconic Eiger being the most well-known peaks.

Home to an abundance of rolling hills, lakes, glaciers, rivers, meadows, and fields, Switzerland's landscapes are incredibly picturesque, particularly in spring and summer when the wildflowers are in bloom.

Top 5 culinary classics of Switzerland

While not enjoying the same worldwide popularity that it did in the 1960s and 70s, this Swiss classic is still alive and well in Switzerland. Although not to everyone's taste, travelers should experience sitting around a communal pot of rich, melted cheese at least once.

Who knew that a plate of grated, fried potato could taste so good? Considered to be Switzerland's national dish, Rosti was once relegated to the breakfast plate but is now served as an accompaniment to dinners too.

3. Bircher Muesli

This Swiss-German classic has taken off worldwide as a breakfast food, although it was originally created for hospital patients by a Swiss physician. Commonly eaten in the evening in southern Switzerland, it's a nutritious mix of oats, fruits, and seeds.

This brioche-like, plaited bread is a traditional Sunday morning treat in Switzerland. Dating back to the 15th century, this delicious bread can be found in bakeries all over Switzerland, especially on Sundays.

Making hundreds of varieties of cheese, Switzerland is one of the best places in the world to indulge in a dose of calcium. Whether it's a chunk of hard Gruyere, a slice of Emmental, or a bit of fruity Appenzeller, Switzerland has enough cheese shops to satisfy everyone.

Reach new heights

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbours, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savour for a lifetime.

Destination must-see's.

Switzerland mustsee v2

Matterhorn:

World famous and the symbol for Switzerland, this mountain is the most photographed in the world. It faces the four cardinal directions and is the tenth highest mountain in Switzerland, but because it has a pyramid shape it is very challenging to climb. The first ascent was in 1865 and cost the lives of 4 out of 7 alpinists. It gets its German name from the words matte meaning meadow and horn meaning peak.

Switzerland mustsee2 v2

This village is like no other. It lies at the foot of what is probably the world’s most famous mountain. It also is located in an enormous hiking and ski region, making it a great vacation spot, even in the summer. This is a car-free zone vacation spot, making it possible to preserve its historical features as well.

Switzerland ms3

As the capital of Switzerland it has managed to retain its historic features. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features 4 miles/6 km of arcades, or as the locals like to call it ‘Lauben,’ making it the longest weather-sheltered shopping in Europe. They also hold the seat of Switzerland’s government, many festivals, a bear park, and beautiful historic buildings that line the streets.

Switzerland ms4

This gateway to central Switzerland sits on Lake Lucerne and has a view of the mountain from wherever you are. Aside from the view it has the Chapel Bridge which is one of Europe’s oldest wooden bridges. A tourist favourite is to visit its souvenir and watch shops, which Switzerland is known for.

Destination Must-Do's

Switzerland md1

Swiss Chocolate:

It is only expected that the country that created chocolate is the country that consumes the most chocolate as well. It was created by adding milk to chocolate to try to reduce the cost and make it more palatable, which lead to milk chocolate. Switzerland now has over seven major chocolate companies. The best part is if you are a chocolate lover you can tour these companies and try their many different chocolates.

Switzerland md2

Swiss fondue:

Swiss fondue was created by local villagers with limited access to fresh foods in the winter. They discovered that if you heated the aged cheese with wines, garlic, and herbs then dipped your stale bread it would soften in the flavourful cheese mixture. Families would cook together in one pot and eat by the warm fire, becoming a Swiss winter tradition over time known as fondue.

Switzerland md3

GoldenPass:

This train ride is like a day vacation. You experience two languages, three regions, and eight lakes. The company focuses on journey and comfort not just transportation. It has seven different lines you can choose from, with the most famous being the panoramic that has panoramic windows that allow you to be one with the landscape. The other is the chocolate train which is a first class trip that lets you experience the production of famous Swiss cheese, the creation of Swiss chocolate, and a chance to see its magnificent castle.

Switzerland md4

Glacier Express:

This may be the slowest express train in the world, but for a reason. There is so much to experience on this journey that they slow it down for you. It takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The train ride is an eight-hour panoramic journey. You travel into the Alps, go through 91 tunnels, and 291 bridges.

Expert Advice

diana

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization encourages the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world. Switzerland has three natural and eight cultural sites that can be visited when in the country.

Switzerland e2

The currency is the Euro in almost all of Europe. In Switzerland, the Swiss Franc is used (CHF). Your personal bank card may work at local ATM machines in the destination you are travelling to and would dispense local currency. Please contact your bank to determine if this option is available.

Switzerland e3

You're in for a treat as you truly savour the local flavours of the Alpine region. In Austria, look for the beef soup -- Rindsuppe -- a clear soup with gold colour that is as tasty as it looks! The Tafelspitz is beef boiled in broth, often served with an apple and horseradish sauce. It's one of Austria's most savoury dishes.

Switzerland FAQ's

Switzerland has a lot to be proud of. The country boasts some of the world`s most famous inventions - they created Velcro, cellophane, the Swiss Army Knife, absinthe, the potato peeler, Helvetica font, LSD, muesli, edible chocolate gold, and milk chocolate to name a few. Switzerland is also famous for it`s beautiful nature and landscape, watchmaking, chocolate, cheese, banks, lakes, and more. One of the best things about Switzerland is all the beautiful nature. Many tourists flock to Switzerland each year just to enjoy the Alps. It`s hard to miss them as they make up about 65% of Switzerland. They are one of the world`s most beautiful mountain ranges. Watches - The watchmaking industry in this country produces watches that are not only technologically advanced but aesthetically appealing as well. Some of the more recognized brands from Switzerland include Rolex, Omega, Tag Heuer and Rado. Almost everyone loves Swiss chocolate and cheese, it`s delicious and two of the most obvious products when you think of Switzerland. They offer so many different varieties of each. If you love chocolate and cheese, you`re in luck here! From a business point of view, Switzerland has a great reputation for its banks. It`s not uncommon for foreign individuals to put a lot of their money into Swiss banks simply because the economy is so stable and Switzerland is considered to be one of the world`s best countries to do your banking with. They are also popular for their neutrality. If you have ever hear the phrase, `I`m Switzerland` when getting into a debate, it`s because of Switzerland`s reputation for their no-interference policy. Basically they commonly take neutral stance when other countries have issues with one another. Switzerland also has become known for is their trains, they have several of them that allow tourists and locals alike to easily get from one destination to another. The country makes traveling by train seamless and quick, but even better, is the incredible scenery you see when traveling by this means of transportation. Another famous attribute in Switzerland is the amazing lakes. There are so many different lakes from large to small and they are all absolutely striking with the mountains scattered behind them as a backdrop. Just the scenery in general, no matter where you travel in this country is incredible. This brings us to the small towns and villages tucked away in all corners of Switzerland. Traditional Swiss Houses, beautiful wooden chalets with pointy tops and flowers in their windowsills are scattered all throughout the winding side streets and back roads. And they look just like you see them in the pictures.

Switzerland just may be the most beautiful country in Europe. There`s something about the way the jagged mountains glistens making a picture-perfect backdrop almost everywhere you go. The natural scenery is incredible and the efficient transportation makes it so easy to get around discovering it all. Every town and city in Switzerland offers it`s own unique character. Central Switzerland is jammed packed with history and culture and the pristine landscapes, gleaming lakes and towering mountaintops are just begging to be explore. This is where you`ll find Central Lucerne , a town straight out of a fairy tale with a magical ambiance that radiates through this town. Brunnen , also located in central Switzerland, is a popular vacation resort situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne boasting breathtaking views. This is an ideal starting point for excursions in the central region of Switzerland. Also worth mentioning in this area of the country is the dramatically positioned Burgenstock, considered to be the most luxurious resort town of the region, along with Vitznau and Weggis . The Lake Geneva Region is situated in the Southwest corner of Switzerland encompassing the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais. Formed by the Rhone, Lac Leman is the largest lake in central Europe. It consists of the Grand Lac to the east and the Petit Lac to the west and covers 225 sq miles; more than half belongs to Switzerland, the rest to France. Here you will discover the beautiful towns of Geneva , Lausanne , Montreux , and Vevey . Northern Switzerland is a region that stretches along the Rhine River and mainly consists of the greater Zurich Area and the great Basel area. If culture and history are your interest, this is a fabulous region for you. You`ll want to be sure to explore the hippest destination, Zurich that is regularly recognized as one of the world`s most livable cities. Also located in this region is the medieval city of Basel the ancient town of St. Gallen , and the well-preserved town of Schaffhausen . The Bernese Oberland Region is an admired and beautiful region south of the Swiss capital of Bern. This Swiss winter wonderland is also a summer playground. In a small area, you`ll find a very diversified landscape where the beautiful towns of Interlaken , Grindelwald , and Wengen are located. With its natural beauty and diverse landscape, the Valais , located in a remote corner of southern Switzerland, is a land of contrasts. Here, you`ll find beautiful glaciers in the valley along the Rhone, majestic four-thousand-meter-high peaks in the mountains, sprawling vineyards, and unspoiled side valleys. Both Zermatt , and Saas Fee are located in this region of the country. The alpine canton of Graubundun is the largest and most easterly canton of Switzerland offering a lot of excitement for every taste. High mountain peaks, remote valleys, small mountain villages - this region is full of adventures and excitement. Chur , the capital of Graubunden, is the gateway to the alpine and loaded with history. Davos and St. Moritz are two other towns you won`t want to miss while visiting this part of the country. The canton of Valais is the southernmost canton in Switzerland, bordering Italy. It is Italian-speaking (the only canton with Italian as the sole official language!) with a Mediterranean vibe. This region offers palm trees, beautiful beaches and blue waters. Similar to Italy, You`ll also find charming alleyways, piazzas, churches and a mixture of city and country with something for everyone! The Swiss Mittelland or the Swiss Plateau is one of the three major landscapes in Switzerland alongside the Jura Mountains and the Swiss Alps. At the heart of this central region lies Bern, the laid-back city that few realize is Switzerland`s capital. You`ll find this entire region offers beautiful countryside with charming villages and plenty of history and cultural attractions to be explored.

The best time to visit Switzerland is during the shoulder seasons, as in April to June and September to October. You can enjoy fewer crowds, mild weather, and lower prices. In fact, the mountain resort towns are almost completely dead. In the spring and fall, you might also get the chance to witness cattle processions that wind through alpine villages. Tourists descend into Switzerland in the summer months to soak up the sunshine and wildflowers that are blooming in the countryside. The snow also typically thaws so you`ll have the chance to hike trails that are often covered. Most mountain resorts open up again but at much higher prices. Winter brings tourist with the love of snow sports. Prices at the slopes don`t typically drop this time of year, but if you are visiting anywhere else in the country you will typically save on hotels and get to enjoy a winter wonderland. For more information on when to go, check out Best Time to Visit Switzerland .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

By Car: Public transport in Switzerland is fantastic, but a car has its advantages: You can save time reaching smaller villages and experience the thrill of winding up and down an Alpine pass, stopping for photos or picnics whenever you like. Switzerland`s roads are generally excellent and marked by clear. Drivers are well trained. You may only need a rubber bone when driving sharply curving, narrow, steep mountain roads, with impatient locals at your rear; or in cities, where trams and bicycles seem to whoosh into streets out of nowhere. One more note of caution: You`ll never want to drive into the mountains if there`s any chance of snow unless you have proper winter tires or chains. In some areas, chains are required, which will be indicated by a blue road sign with a picture of a tire in chains; the same sign with a red slash tells you when you exit that zone. Attempting to drive down an icy mountain with summer tires can be incredibly dangerous (and you may not be covered by insurance). Most North American rental agencies have offices in the major communities of Switzerland. You`ll save a fair amount of money if you make these arrangements before departing for Europe. You`ll also save a lot of money if you can drive a stick shift rather than an automatic. To rent a car in Switzerland, you generally must be at least 20 years old; if you are not yet 25 years old, plan to pay a higher rate. Your North American driver`s license is all that is needed, but you’ll need an international driver`s license if you drive into neighboring countries. Those are fairly inexpensive and can be obtained at your AAA office before departing. For more information, check out Driving in Switzerland . By Train: Train travel is by far the best way to travel in Switzerland; it’s economical and popular with both locals and tourists. The stations are clean and equipped with a variety of services, while the trains themselves are punctual, equally clean and comfortable. Although smoking is allowed in many public places in Switzerland, the trains are smoke-free. Unless you have extremely unusual circumstances that require private vehicles, get on the train and experience life as the locals do. You`ll be exposed to spectacular scenery and a way of life for most Europeans. Two of the world`s most scenic train routes are the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express , which cross through the rugged mountain landscapes, offering up a vision of Switzerland that just can`t be found elsewhere. This is where you might want to splurge and buy seats in the observation cars for unobstructed view of the Alps. First-class cars are slightly more spacious and provide a better view on the upper level, but second-class tickets will save you quite a bit of money. If you’re traveling with family, children under 16 travel for free in the company of an adult, but be sure to purchase the family tickets. The best investment any independent traveler to Switzerland can make is the Swiss Pass. In addition to train travel all over the country, this valuable pass includes intercity bus routes, ferry boats on many lakes, tour boats on many rivers and admission to multiple museums around the country. Discounts are offered on select cog railways and funiculars, as well as some special events and festivals.

The currency of Switzerland is the Swiss franc, usually indicated as CHF or SFr. While Switzerland is not part of the European Union and thus is not obliged to convert to the Euro, many prices are nonetheless indicated in euros so that visitors may compare prices. Euros are accepted in many places, but you will most likely receive francs in return. US dollars are not accepted.

Switzerland is the world’s only country where there are four national languages. These include French, Rumantsch, German and Italian. English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but not everywhere. We suggest you get a good English-German guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

Vitalli was a wonderful tour guide and a pleasure to work with.
The planning was great and easy to follow. We had great time. I do hope I could get the itinerary earlier so we can make additinal plan at each stop early on. And it would be great to have more transparency on the pricing also.
Good, but there was definitely a lack of information given to folk on the tour. As in what to wear, how strenuous it's going to be ... etc.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Can i book my roundtrip in advance.

Yes and advance booking is highly recommended, especially for the busy summer season when demand is particularly high. Packages can be booked easily, online or via one of our travel experts.

What is the best time of year to take the trip?

This depends on your personal preferences. Each season offers something different:

  • Spring (April to May) : Ideal for nature lovers, as landscapes bloom and temperatures are pleasant. There may still be snow at higher altitudes.
  • Summer (June to August) : The best time to enjoy the full splendour of the Swiss countryside, especially if intending to hike or cycle. The weather is warm and days are long however, this is also peak season for visitors.
  • Autumn (September to November) : Great for photography enthusiasts, as colours change to magnificent seasonal shades while the weather remains mild.
  • Winter (December to February) : This season brings magical snowy landscapes and the opportunity to experience Switzerland’s winter sports resorts.

In general, spring and autumn mean pleasant weather, while summer is ideal for those that love sun and outdoor activities. Winter offers a unique opportunity to enjoy snow-covered Alpine landscapes.

Please note that it is only possible to complete the full Grand Train Tour of Switzerland from spring to autumn, due to the seasonal opening of the Gotthard Panorama Express route.

Can I travel with children?

Yes, trains in Switzerland are suitable for passengers of all ages, including families with children but please do note the following important points:

  • Tickets:  Children can benefit from reduced fares, depending on their age. Please contact our travel experts for more specific information about your booking.
  • Entertainment and Activities:  Remember to bring something (books or games) to keep your children occupied.
  • Snacks and Refreshments: The Glacier Express, Goldenpass Express and Gotthard Panorama Express boat all offer catering options but we, nevertheless, recommend that you bring plenty of snacks and drinks for your children.

Are the trains wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the trains are wheelchair accessible. Please contact one of our travel experts to organise your trip.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?

The main differences between 1st and 2nd class are the seat arrangement and comfort. In 1st class, passengers enjoy larger, more comfortable seats with additional legroom and space for luggage. The seating arrangement is usually 2+1, meaning two seats to one side of the aisle and one on the other, offering more privacy. In 2nd class, there are usually two seats on either side of the aisle. Although 2nd class seats are still comfortable, they offer slightly less space and legroom than those in 1st class.

Individual Switzerland vacations shaped around your passions

With its pristine Alpine mountainscapes, bucolic dairy villages and glittering international cities, Switzerland combines broad cultural influences with a deeply independent attitude. Surrounded by other European countries yet protected by its forbidding mountain range, Switzerland is a nation of many regions, languages and landscapes. Our specialists have visited the whole country, from French-speaking Geneva  in the west, where the UN has its headquarters, to the glitzy mountain retreat St. Moritz in the east, where Swiss-German is the main language.

We can help you visit a wine region during a jazz festival in Montreux, walk through an intact medieval town in Swiss-German Bern, see the world’s longest glacier from a mountain summit in the Swiss Alps  and learn to make risotto in a lakeside grotto in Italian-speaking Ticino. Whether you want to shop Zürich’s fashionable streets, hear alphorn players in the Emmental Valley or see the Matterhorn mirrored in a glassy lake, we’ll tailor your vacation in Switzerland to your interests.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Switzerland

Switzerland has four national languages: Swiss-German, French, Italian, and Romansh. The most widely spoken is Swiss-German, but you’ll hear French in the western regions, Italian in the south and, in the southeast, a tiny percentage of the population still speaks Romansh. However, English is widely spoken, making travel and conversation simple.

Swiss Francs (CHF) are Switzerland’s national currency, but many places accept euros as well. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but in some small, remote towns, you may still be asked to pay cash.

Tips in Switzerland’s restaurants are generally included in the final cost, but it’s common to round up the total. The same holds true for taxis, but tips for housekeeping are not common.

For the latest travel advice for Switzerland, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

Cheese features heavily on the national menu and one classic dish you should try in Switzerland is fondue, a rich, creamy pot of warmed Gruyère, Emmental, and white wine, which serves as a dipping sauce for crusty bread. Other local dishes include raclette, which is made from cheese of the same name melted and served with potatoes, and rösti, pan-fried grated potatoes which often accompany eggs, cheese, meat, or vegetables.

Swiss chocolate is well-known around the world, and you’ll find tempting chocolate shops in almost every town. We’d also suggest trying some of Switzerland’s spirits — often enjoyed as a digestif — such as the once-banned absinthe, kirsch, a cherry brandy, or Goldschläger, a cinnamon schnapps.

With snow-capped peaks, glittering lakes, and historic towns and cities, Switzerland offers a wide range of experiences for the visitor. The weathered mountains and steep valleys cradle deep-blue lakes every bit as beautiful as photographs suggest and with a web of walking trails and an extensive rail network, it’s easy to access the great outdoors.

You can see the sun set over the Matterhorn and spend time in the most indulgent mountain resorts on a tour of the lakes and mountains of Switzerland . Ride the steepest cog wheel train in the world at Pilatus Kulm, visit cheesemakers and chocolatiers, or wander along cobbled streets flanked by half-timbered buildings in Zürich and Bern on a Highlights of Switzerland trip. From cosmopolitan cities offering art galleries, fine dining restaurants and varied nightlife to traditional mountain villages and bustling ski resorts, Switzerland promises majestic landscapes, outdoor adventures, and urban sophistication.

Switzerland offers a wide variety of places to go depending on what you’d most like to see. Cosmopolitan Geneva with its medieval old town, stately architecture, and striking Jet d’Eau — a fountain shooting water high into the crisp mountain air — is a good place to start.

You could then head to a traditional Swiss resort town such as Montreux on the edge of Lake Geneva to relax, plan to go hiking, or climbing in the Bernese Oberland, or see the Matterhorn from Zermatt .

Set between soaring peaks, Lugano is a beautiful historic town on the shore of a glacial lake, waterfront Lausanne has a 12th-century cathedral and a Florentine-Renaissance-style museum, while compact Lucerne is best known for its handsome medieval streets.

From chic mountain resorts to intimate villas and slick boutique hotels, you can pick and choose where to stay in Switzerland from a wide variety of options. For old-world charm, art and antique-filled rooms, and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the Villa Castagnola on the shores of Lake Lugano is an excellent choice.

In Zürich, stay in the heart of the old town at the Marktgasse Hotel which blends crisp, modern design with historic features. Experience traditional Swiss style and hospitality at the Hotel Daniela in Zermatt, or stay at the century-old Hotel Belvedere in Grindelwald at the foot of the Eiger.

A direct flight from New York City to Zürich takes around eight hours, while a flight from Los Angeles to Zürich will take around 12 hours.

Switzerland uses Central European Time which is UTC+1 hour (EST-6 hours). Daylight Savings Time is observed from late-March to late-October.

The Swiss rail network is extensive and highly efficient and makes a great way to get around the country. Trains will take you right up into the mountains and offer access to remote areas where driving conditions can be challenging.

If you choose to drive, the roads are well maintained but often involve lots of hairpin bends with limited visibility and the concentration needed to drive means you can’t enjoy the scenery quite so much.

You don’t need to get any specific vaccinations for Switzerland, but it’s always a good idea to be up to date on vaccinations that would normally be advised at home. For further information on travel health in Switzerland, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

American citizens do not need a visa for stays of less than 90 days in Switzerland or other countries in the Schengen Area. If you’re visiting other parts of Europe too, or are a frequent visitor to Europe, please note that the 90-day limit is for time spent across the whole visa-free zone.

It’s worth checking in advance that your passport is valid for at least the six months after your departure from Switzerland and has at least one blank page remaining.

How to get around in Switzerland: from sky-high mountain rides to state-of-the-art railways

swiss travel tour

Nowhere does the saying "the journey is the destination" ring truer than in Switzerland .

With valleys deep and mountains high, get ready for rides of a lifetime – from hairpin-bend road trips to trains chugging high into the snowy wilds of the Alps and and heavenly boat journeys across piercing blue lakes. Travel in Switzerland isn’t only beautiful – it’s also environmentally sound. The eco-minded Swiss have nailed rail travel like no other nation, and climate-neutral boats, solar-powered cable cars, electric buses and car-free towns and resorts further boost its sustainable credentials. Thanks to plentiful charging stations, the entire country is drivable by electric car.

Journeys in Switzerland aren’t just about getting from A to B – they are travel moments you’ll be raving about for years to come. Here's how to get around this tremendously scenic country.

Be wowed by the Swiss scenery when traveling by train

You’ve got to hand it to the Swiss – their trains really are the dream: efficient, slickly modern, eco-friendly and with views that keep you glued to the window for the duration of the journey.

Most major cities, including Bern , Geneva , Zurich and Basel , are connected by rail with daily services. Tickets do not need to be bought in advance, and they can be purchased at stations on the day of travel or on the official Swiss Railways website . That said, look out for sizable discounts when booking “supersaver” tickets ahead of travel.

Wonderful view of Switzerland with mountain from the window of Golden pass line train, Zweisimmen to Montreux.

Ride the panoramic trains for the best views

Primarily geared towards tourists, these panoramic trains often have cars with extra large (and remarkably well polished) windows that emphasize the incredible scenery and let you get some great photos. They all require reservations, with tickets usually sold for a specific leg on the routes rather than the full journey.

  • Glacier Express : The "wow" never leaves your lips on this legendary Alpine train journey between Zermatt and St Moritz. The Brig–Zermatt Alpine leg makes for pretty powerful viewing, as does the area between Disentis/Mustér and Brig.
  • GoldenPass Line : Skirting the shores of some of Switzerland’s most ravishing lakes, this route links Lucerne to Montreux . The journey is in three legs, and you must change trains twice. Regular trains, without panoramic windows, work the whole route hourly.
  • Bernina Express : This route negotiates 55 tunnels and 196 bridges as it travels the Alpine valley of Engadine one way from Chur to Tirano in four hours, hitting its high point at 2253m (7392ft) above sea level. Between May and October, you can continue from Tirano to Lugano by bus.
  • Mont Blanc/St Bernard Expresses : Go from Martigny to Chamonix, France, or over the sensationally wild St Bernard Pass.
  • Voralpen Express : Glide between Lake Constance and Lake Lucerne, through St Gallen, Rapperswil and Romanshorn on this route.
  • Gotthard Panorama Express : This rail-boat combo starts with a wonderful 2.5-hour cruise across Lake Lucerne to Flüelen, from where a train winds its way through ravines and past mountains to Bellinzona or Lugano.

Tip for saving francs on scenic train journeys: Regularly scheduled services, which often ply the same routes as the tourist trains, can be just as enjoyable and significantly less expensive.

Mini driving on snow lined road in Switzerland

Driving in Switzerland is a breeze

Skirting lakes and vineyards and twisting up and over passes in the high Alps, Switzerland’s roads are beautiful on a cinematic scale, and the country has plenty of drives that are too darned scenic to rush.

The headline road trip is the 1600km (994-mile) Grand Tour of Switzerland , an epic, efficiently signposted lap of the country that links 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and shows off the Alpine nation from its most flattering angles. And the environmental clincher? It’s entirely drivable by electric car.

You’ll find car rental companies at airports and in cities and towns. Many now rent out electric cars, too. The minimum rental age is usually 25 but falls to 20 at some local firms. You always need a credit card. In winter, rental cars are usually equipped with winter tires.

Switzerland’s roads are well signposted and maintained, but you should always check conditions before heading up into the Alps, especially in winter. The highest passes are only open from June to October and, depending on the weather, you may need to use a tunnel instead.

Tip for driving on freeways in Switzerland: You’ll need to pay an annual one-time charge of Sfr40 to use Swiss freeways and semi-freeways, identified by green signs. This is available as an E-vignette online or as a Vignette (sticker) at the border, at Swiss gas stations, post offices and at Swiss tourist offices abroad. The sticker must be displayed on the windshield.

Buses serve remote mountain regions

If you are in no hurry, Switzerland’s bright yellow postal buses can be a fun way to reach the remote mountain regions. The country’s PostBus service is synchronized with train arrivals, and bus stops are handily located right next to railway stations.

Prices are comparable to train fares. Swiss national travel passes are valid, but a few tourist-oriented Alpine routes levy a surcharge. Tickets are purchased from the driver, though on some scenic routes over the Alps (for instance the Lugano to St Moritz run) reservations are necessary.

A cable car dangles high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland

Take a mountain railway, cable car or funicular ride

What a way to commute! The cable cars, funiculars, cogwheel railways and gondolas that climb up to the country’s highest Alpine reaches  are an absolute joy to experience and a highlight of traveling in Switzerland (as long as you have a head for heights!).

True marvels of engineering, the mountain gondolas graze treetops, rail-bound funiculars shimmy precariously close to rock faces, and cable cars wobble across valleys (don’t worry – they are safe and subject to regular checks), before all emerge at a spectacularly snowy summit or glacier. It’s worth checking out what money-saving passes are available locally because they often work out cheaper than individual tickets and costs can quickly mount up in a country with so much vertical.

Tip for taking cable cars: A word of warning: always check what time the last cable car goes down the mountain unless you fancy a very long trek down. In mountain resorts in winter, it's as early as 4pm when the light starts to fade.

Boat travel is a slow but wonderful way to cross Switzerland's lakes

Switzerland is a landlocked country, but boats ply the country's large lakes, serviced by steamers operated by Swiss Federal Railways or private companies for which national travel passes are valid.

Passenger boats run on Lake Geneva , Constance, Lucerne , Lugano , Neuchâtel , Biel, Murten, Thun, Brienz and Zug. Traveling by boat is a slow and delightfully scenic way to get around.

Tip for seeing Switzerland from the water: Check out SwitzerlandMobility for a detailed overview of regional and national canoe routes on lakes and rivers - from Bodensee (Lake Constance) in the country’s north to Italian-flavoured Ticino in the south.

A red Bernina Express train travels along a lakeshore in Switzerland

Consider investing in a Swiss Travel Pass

Though travel in Switzerland is efficient and convenient, it can also be expensive, and visitors planning to use intercity routes should consider investing in a Swiss Travel Pass . With this transport pass, you're allowed unlimited travel by train (including premium panorama trains), bus and boat, as well as local public transportation in cities, free entry to 500 museums and discounts of up to 50% on mountain excursions.

Tip for families: Children under 16 travel free of charge with the complimentary Swiss Family Card when accompanied by at least one parent (holding a Swiss Travel System ticket).

Mountain bikers stop for a break at a picturesque lookout over the Swiss Alps, in the Portes du Soleil region.

Experience Switzerland up close by bicycle

Whether you’re looking to crawl up hills on a road bike, tear down trails on a mountain bike or simply want a gentle pedal through orchards and vineyards hugging the shores of a shimmering lake, Switzerland is brilliantly set up for cyclists. Many cities have free or inexpensive bike-rental schemes , and bicycle and e-bike rental is usually available at train stations.

There are many well-signed and highly scenic cycle routes heading along rivers and lakeshores in Switzerland, perfect for two-wheel adventures. For details on national, regional and local routes, rental (including e-bike rental), bike-friendly accommodations, guides and maps, check SwitzerlandMobility .

Tip for traveling by train with a bike: Bikes can be taken on slower trains, and sometimes even on InterCity (IC) or EuroCity (EC) trains, when there’s room in the luggage carriage. Advance booking is sometimes necessary.

Accessible transportation is good in Switzerland

Switzerland ranks among the world’s most easily navigable countries for travelers with physical disabilities. Most train stations have a mobile lift for boarding trains, and city buses are equipped with ramps. The majority of modern hotels also have wheelchair access (although budget accommodations tend not to have elevators).

Switzerland Tourism has excellent information on barrier-free travel , including details on airport arrangements, assisted rail travel and disabled parking, or get in touch with Procap , an authority on barrier-free travel in Switzerland. The SBB has helpful pages on accessible travel , including details on tickets, booking assistance and journey planning.
