Riding the Bernina Express From Italy to Switzerland

train trips from italy to switzerland

Swiss Travel System

The Bernina Express is a scenic train ride through the Swiss Alps. Along with its "sister" ride, the Glacier Express (also in Switzerland), it is widely regarded as one of the most unforgettable train journeys in the world. It forms part of the Abula/Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway, a scenic route through the Alps which, because of its history, engineering innovation, and the stunning landscape through which it passes, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

The Bernina Express begins – or ends, depending on which way you're going – in Tirano, Italy, just a few kilometers from the Swiss border. From there it climbs into the Alps, passing mirror-like lakes, quaint villages, snow-covered mountains, and glaciers on its two-hour journey to St. Moritz, Switzerland . The tunnels, viaducts, and station buildings of the Bernina line include marvels of engineering and contribute to the excitement of a journey aboard this panoramic train.

History of the Bernina Express

As tourism to the Swiss Alps began to increase in the late 1800s, the Bernina line was conceived as a way to transport even more tourists to the Engadine Valley, the Alpine region that includes St. Moritz, Pontresina, the Morteratsch glacier, and the Bernina Pass, the 2,253 meter-passage (7,392 feet) between the towering mountain peaks. Construction on the line began in 1906 and finished in 1910.

Because of elevation changes, narrow ridges along which to lay track, and distances to span between mountain faces, the construction of the Bernina line presented new engineering challenges that required daring and innovative solutions. As a result, the route soon became famous for its steep grades, high elevation crossings, tunnels that run through and along the side of mountains and viaducts, or flyovers that cross valleys and gaps.

Originally intended only for summer travel, by 1913, the Bernina line extended service into winter months, as wintertime travel to the Alps began to boom. It became part of Rhaetian Railways in 1943. Although standard trains also run on the Bernina line, it is best known for the cheerful red Bernina Express trains, which run all the way to Chur, nearly 90 miles (140 km) from Tirano. In naming it a World Heritage Site, UNESCO recognized the Albula/Bernina lines for their "outstanding technical, architectural, and environmental ensemble that embodies architectural and civil engineering achievements, in harmony with the landscapes through which they pass."

Highlights of the Bernina Express

While the entire length of the Bernina Express is an exceptionally scenic ride through Alpine landscape, there are a few extraordinary highlights along the way.

  • Brusio Viaduct. From the town center of Tirano, Italy, the train quickly starts climbing and within a few minutes, crosses the border into Switzerland. Soon after, it reaches the astounding Brusio Viaduct, a spiral, arched bridge that foments an elevation change that would have otherwise been too steep for a straight-running track.
  • Miralago. From Brusio, the scenery gets more dramatic as the train winds past glass-like Miralago, with the mirror images of surrounding mountains reflected in its calm water.
  • Poschiavo Valley. The climb above the Poschiavo Valley ushers in the stunning Alpine scenery for which the Bernina Express is famous. The village of Poschiavo gets tinier and tinier as the train switchbacks up the Cavagliasco viaducts into high mountain terrain.
  • Alp Grüm. This mountain hamlet, which in the wintertime is reachable only by train, marks the one stop the Bernina Express makes on its journey to the Engadine Valley. Located just south of the Bernina Pass, Alp Grüm, at 2,091 meters (nearly 6,900 feet) above sea level, offers great views of the Palü Glacier and the Poschiavo Valley. In wintertime, the landscape is buried in snow. For those who want to stop for a meal or even an overnight, there's the simple, rustic Alp Grüm hotel and restaurant at the station.
  • Lago Bianco. The train nest passes this high-altitude reservoir – frozen solid in wintertime – before it arrives at Ospizio Bernina, the highest point on the Bernina Line, at 2,250 meters (7,380 feet) above sea level and at the high point of the Bernina Pass.
  • Morteratsch Glacier. Although it's quickly receding as a result of climate change, the largest glacier in the Bernina Range is still an impressive sight. In wintertime, it's the setting for the Diavolezza ski area and in the summertime, the area is great for hiking.

From the glacier, the rail line descends into the Engadine Valley, first stopping in cozy Pontresina and then in the ski and spa haven of St. Moritz.

Bernina Express Essentials

Tickets for the Bernina Express can be purchased from the Rhaetian Railways website. Prices for a one-way, second-class ticket from Tirano to St. Moritz are priced from 32 euros. First class tickets start at around 56 euros.

Some other tips for riding the Bernina Express:

  • It's possible to catch a morning train in Tirano, spend a few hours in St. Moritz, then come back on a later train.
  • If the Bernina Express train is not available at the time you wish to travel, the normal RhB trains follow the same track–they just make more frequent stops so the journey takes longer. Be sure to request panoramic seats, for a surcharge of 4 euros per passenger.
  • The right side of the train offers the best views.
  • There is no food service on the Bernina Express unless you book a meal in advance. There's coffee/tea service for first class passengers.
  • If you spend the night at Tirano before or after your train ride, Hotel Bernina is a friendly and convenient three-star property right across the street from the station. In Pontresina, Grand Hotel Kronenhof offers old-world poshness, while in St. Moritz, the legendary Kulm Hotel is credited with having opened up Switzerland to winter tourism in the late 1800s.

Switzerland and Italy are two of Europe’s most visited countries. They attract around 80 million tourists a year, but this isn't all just down to good marketing. These countries are popular for all the right reasons – impressive cuisine, interesting history, beautiful scenery, and easy accessibility. Get ready to discover all of it!

italy-switzerland-itin-tripplanner

This itinerary takes you to the following destinations in Italy and Switzerland:

  • Day 1:  Zurich, Switzerland
  • Days 1 – 2:  Lucerne, Switzerland
  • Days 2 – 4:  GoldenPass and Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
  • Days 5 – 6:  Zermatt, Switzerland
  • Days 7 – 8:  Glacier Express and St Moritz, Switzerland
  • Days 9 – 10:  Bernina Express and Milan, Italy
  • Days 11 – 12:  Florence, Italy
  • Days 13 – 14:  Rome, Italy

A Global Pass will take you to all these places (and more if you want to!). Are you ready?

Day 1: Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich is home to Switzerland’s busiest airport, which makes it a good starting point for a rail journey between Switzerland and Italy. Zurich may primarily be a transport, banking, and finance hub, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the views and atmosphere before continuing south.

Don’t miss:  If you’re only in town for a few hours, then walk the quaint lanes of the Old Town and take in the beautiful scenes along the waterfront.

switzerland-zurich-swans-city-view

Days 1 - 2: Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne may have all the trappings of a large Swiss city, but there’s still a small-town charm to this beautiful destination that makes it incredibly appealing. Like Zurich, this means that food and accommodation aren’t cheap. But you'll realise why when you look at this impressive lakeside setting.

Don’t miss:  A walk along the city walls and up the clock towers offers the best views of the city and lake and is also free!

How to get there by train:  There are regular trains between Zurich and Lucerne that take approximately 50 minutes.

switzerland-lucerne-at-twilight

Days 2 - 4: GoldenPass and Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Hop aboard the GoldenPass Line and prepare for the ride of your life. Interlaken may be one of the more popular cities in Switzerland, but the true magic lies just up the tracks. A lifetime may not be enough for this Swiss valley, but give yourself at least two full days. You'll have enough time to take in some hikes, a trip up to the Jungfraujoch, a stomach-churning Alpine paraglide, or a ferry cruise along Lakes Thun and Brienz.

Don’t miss:  If budget allows, then ride up to the Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn. If your finances are strained, then head for the mountains on foot. Altitude always wins, but a walk to Wengen, Müren, or even further up the valley floor is really rewarding.

How to get there by train:  There are regular trains between Lucerne and Interlaken, including those on the panoramic GoldenPass carriages. Split the journey in two parts and alight at Interlaken station. From there, a small private train connects you to Lauterbrunnen – just show your Interrail Pass for a discount.

switzerland-lauterbrunnen-waterfall

Days 5 - 6: Zermatt, Switzerland

The GoldenPass Line continues down towards the exquisite Lake Geneva. It's an incredible destination if you have some additional days to spare. But if you're short on time, there are easy train connections from Interlaken to the famous town of Zermatt, in the shadow of the Matterhorn.

Don’t miss:  Glacier Paradise in Zermatt might be costly, but it’s as impressive as the name suggests. If it’s out of your budget, there are dozens of hikes that can dish up magnificent views of the Matterhorn for free.

How to get there by train:  Regular trains between the two cities take approximately two hours, and the train between Visp and Zermatt is included in your Interrail Pass.

switzerland-zermatt-village-mountains

Days 7 - 8: St Moritz, Switzerland

St. Moritz is a beautiful city. It just oozes glitz and glamour all year round. To get there, a ride on the Glacier Express is an experience you won’t forget. The Interrail Pass completely covers this popular route! You’ll need to pay a reservation fee to secure a seat, but consider this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Don’t miss:  A sunrise walk or jog around Lake St. Moritz before your train departs is a great experience – and it won’t cost you a cent.

How to get there by train:  The Glacier Express runs between Zermatt and St. Moritz daily. Check the  website  for the latest timetable.

switzerland-lake-moritz-view

Days 9 - 10: Bernina Express and Milan, Italy

Hitch a ride out of Switzerland in the most dramatic way possible – aboard the Bernina Express. This route, recognized by UNESCO, is easily one of the most scenic in Europe. It connects you directly to the Italian town of Tirano in just a few hours, and you can then continue on to the design and fashion capital of Milan.

Don’t miss:  It would be difficult, and a mistake, to miss Milan’s Duomo. This monumental Gothic cathedral is the architectural symbol of this iconic city.

How to get there by train:  Several regional trains leave from St. Moritz to Tirano, and daily departures of the panoramic Bernina Express. Both offer the same views, though the Express requires a seat reservation. There are also hourly trains from Tirano to Milan.

italy-milan-sunrise-duomo

Days 11 - 12: Florence, Italy

Florence attracts visitors the world over for its food, coffee, architecture, and art. It’s the birthplace of the Renaissance. It’s also a city that’s earned top spots on many bucket lists and in many hearts.

Don’t miss:  Climb to the top of Florence’s Duomo. Purchase a combination ticket and experience the views from both the dome and the bell tower.

How to get there by train:  There are regular high-speed trains between Milan and Florence.

italy-florence-panorama

Days 13 - 14: Rome, Italy

To wrap up Switzerland and Italy in two weeks, go to the Italian capital of Rome. It’s a city so famous that you’ll feel as if you already know it, but there’s something profoundly moving about walking her streets and soaking up the history. A day isn't enough to take it all in, so allocate as much time as possible here before jetting out. Rome's international airport has good connections to many international destinations.

Don’t miss:  Simply walking the streets and taking in the sights in and around the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

How to get there by train:  Regular high-speed trains between Florence and Rome make it an easy connection.

Italy to Switzerland in 25 Minutes: A Day Trip From Lake Como

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Sharing is caring!

It wasn’t until I zoomed in on a map of Lake Como, looking for nearby places to visit, that I saw how close it was to Lugano, Switzerland. I then decided I’d spend a few nights in Switzerland, just to say I’ve been. Little did I know, I could get from Italy to Switzerland in just 25 minutes. And while Lugano is the perfect day trip from Lake Como, I happened to stay there a few nights although I only recommend two nights maximum.

Italy to Switzerland

My favorite thing about Lugano is the fact that I didn’t need to try and decipher yet another language as this town is located in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland. Three of the four national languages of Switzerland are Italian, French, and German, so if you know any of those, you’re good to go.

How to Get From Italy to Switzerland

The simplest way to get from Italy to Switzerland is by train although driving is fine too. I bought a $23 train ticket from raileurope.com to go from Lake Como to Lugano and the ride was a breeze. While my ride took exactly 39 minuets, the quickest route is 25 minutes. Driving time is typically 35 minutes so if you insist on driving, it should be an easy trip. Do keep in mind that you’ll have to find somewhere to park once in Lugano.

Check car rental prices here .

Looking at Lugano via map and in person reminds me so much of Lake Como, but once you see the two in person you can tell the difference. The areas around the lake are also vastly different as Lake Como seemed a lot more lively whereas certain parts of Lake Como seemed deserted to me. I could walk blocks over from the lake and maybe see a few other people on the street. I think the area is more akin to a downtown area that isn’t busy on weekends but you’re liable to see people going to and from work.

Easy Day Trips From Lugano

I hope no one is offended by this, but I didn’t feel as though Lugano had all that much to offer. The one person who was in my hostel longer than me actually took day trips every day, which is why I don’t recommend staying here more than two nights. There were exchange students everywhere so if you’re younger than 22, you may have a more exciting time than I did. However, the best thing about this area are the easy day trips from Lugano.

Day Trip from Lake Como

Day Trip to Lake Como, Italy

If you didn’t spend time in Lake Como prior to coming to Lugano then I highly recommend giving it a visit. Read here for my top recommendations of things to do in Lake Como. Some of my recommendations include visiting Bellagio, taking a walking tour of old town Como , and having a dining experience at a locals home.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Bellinzona is home to three medieval castles: Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro. All three castles make one UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can purchase a ticket to tour them here . Because I had such trouble finding things to do in Lugano, I hopped on the train to Bellinzona one morning and walked from castle to castle and roamed around the grounds. While I’ve seen castles further east in Europe, they definitely weren’t medieval. This was a very cool experience and one of the best day trips from Lugano.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Also check out this amazing food tour that allows you to taste the area of Bellinzona like a local. This self guided tour leads you to four places that are all within walking distance of each other. Bellinzona is definitely a walkable city so once you get off of the train you can either get around on foot or hop on the bus.

Zurich, Switzerland

The train from Lugano to Zurich takes just a little over 2 hours and for some of us, that’s an easy day trip. Since Lugano is located in Switzerland’s Ticino region, the Italian speaking region, Zurich is a stark contrast. Also anticipate the weather being much cooler in the northern city of Zurich.

If you decide to spend a full day in Zurich, consider purchasing the Zurich Card . The pass, valid for 24 or 72 hours, can help you save on museums, restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Castelgrande

Also be sure to check out these tours in and around Zurich:

  • 4-Hour City Tour by Ferry, Cable Car and Coach
  • Thermal Baths and Spa with Panoramic Views
  • 2-Hour Sightseeing Bus Tour
  • Day Trip to Grindelwald & Interlaken

San Bernardino, Switzerland

San Bernardino is a village in Switzerland known for its mountains. The San Bernardino Pass is extremely popular among hikers and because it’s located in the Swiss Alps, it’s a great place for skiing in the winter as well. There are several ski resorts in San Bernardino. If you’re not into hiking or skiing, you may want to skip this area.

Milan, Italy

If you’ve never been to Milan, one of the fashion capitols of the world, then it’d be a great day trip away from Lugano. The train ride is only about an hour and after visiting Milan on two occasions, I think it’s nice for a day trip versus spending an extended about of time there.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

When researching things to do in Milan two tours will always be recommended. 1. Visit the duomo and I personally recommend exploring the rooftop of the cathedral. Grab a rooftop ticket here . And 2. seeing the Last Supper painting. Book a guided tour for that here .

The Best Hotels In Lugano

Everyone knows that Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries on earth. I even hear residents constantly complain of how much things cost, so you know it’s bad. Hotels in Lugano are no different than restaurants and other activities. They’re expensive. In fact, that’s probably what you’ll spend the bulk of your money on, so be sure to choose wisely.

Here are the 7 best hotels in Lugano, Switzerland:

  • Lugano Dante Center
  • Hotel City Lugano, Design & Hospitality
  • Villa Sassa Hotel, Residence & Spa
  • Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola
  • Hotel Walter au Lac

SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) and Trenitalia (Italian Railways) jointly operate an excellent train service between major Swiss cities and Milan, with a handful of trains continuing to Verona & Venice, Bologna or Genoa.  These trains are branded EuroCity , a generic term for quality train in much of Europe.  They're operated by either bullet-nosed Astoro trains, some owned by SBB some by Trenitalia, or new Giruno trains .

A handful of these trains extend beyond Milan, to Venice, Bologna & Genoa.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: GOTTHARD TUNNEL BLOCKED UNTIL LATE 2024

On 10 August 2023, a freight train derailed inside the Gotthard Base Tunnel ripping up several kilometres of track.  Passenger trains are being diverted over the old scenic Gotthard line (and the shorter original Gotthard Tunnel) until a date to be announced in 2024.  A few passenger trains are now using the Base Tunnel especially at weekends, most aren't.  If you're travelling between Zurich & Milan (or between Basel & Milan via the Gotthard route), check your trains online.  The Simplon & Lötschberg routes are not affected.

TRAVELLING BETWEEN 9 JUNE & 8 SEPTEMBER?  SIMPLON ROUTE BLOCKED BY TRACKWORK

With the Paris-Milan route via Modane still blocked, they'd have to be stupid to go ahead and dig up the Simplon route as well, right?  Nope, they're doing trackwork at Stresa as planned which will completely close the Simplon route from 9 June to 8 September 2024.  So in this period, Geneva-Lausanne-Milan and Basel-Spiez-Milan trains are cancelled, only the Zurich-Milan route will work.

What are the trains like ?

Giruno trains.

These swish new Giruno trains now operate most Zurich-Milan services.  Officially designated RABe 501, their party trick is level boarding - between the wheels they are low-floor with easy level access from platform onto train.  The trade-off is an unusual layout inside, with a floor that's low between the bogies and slopes up over the wheels with some of the car-end seats raised on platforms either side as you can see in the photos below.  There's a restaurant car with cafe-bar counter, the train has power sockets at all seats and free WiFi.  There is one 1st class car with seats grouped around tables for 4 and tables for 2, this what you get if you select business when booking.  I explain how to tell if your train is due to be a Giruno or Astoro/ETR610 in the travel tips section .  Giruno seat map .

Astoro trains

These classy tilting pendolino   trains, designated RABe503 Astoro by the Swiss or ETR610 by the Italians, have 1st & 2nd class and a restaurant car.  They're excellent trains, fully air-conditioned with power sockets at all seats, and seats line up with the windows for great views.  Until early 2020, all Swiss-Italian EuroCity trains were operated by these Swiss Astoro trains or their Trenitalia-owned ETR610 equivalent , but SBB's new Giruno trains entered service from 2020 onwards on the Gotthard route and have now taken over all Zurich-Milan services.  Astoro seat map .

Trenitalia trains

Trenitalia provides the rolling stock for some Switzerland-Italy departures, using its ETR610 pendolino trains.  To all intents and purposes these are identical to SBB's RABe503 Astoro trains, but with a different exterior & interior colour scheme.  You could get either a Swiss or an Italian train.  Seat map .

Scenery & sights

These trains pass some great Alpine scenery and various Swiss & Italian Lakes.  Here's a summary of what to look out for on each of the four routes.

The Simplon route

Geneva - Lausanne - Montreux - Brig - Milan

After leaving Geneva the train runs alongside Lake Leman all the way to Lausanne, with great views of the lake on your right hand side when heading south.  Shortly after Lausanne you'll pass the beautiful Chillon Castle on your right, using the lake as its moat.  Northbound you can see it as you approach, southbound there's little warning before you're next to it.  Watch out for hilltop castles, including at Sion on your left when going south.  You'll also pass many vineyards.

Beyond Brig the train enters the famous Simplon Tunnel , which opened in 1906 and gave its name to the Simplon Orient Express .  The tunnel is 19 km (12 miles) long but it takes just 8 minutes to pass through.  For most of the 20th century it was the longest railway tunnel in the world, from 1906 until 1982 when a longer tunnel opened in Japan.  The Swiss-Italian border is inside the tunnel so when you emerge into daylight you're in Italy.  South of the Simplon Tunnel the train runs along the shores of beautiful Lake Maggiore (see the photos below) with great views across the lake on your left hand side.  The train usually calls at Stresa before arriving in the awe-inspiring Milan Centrale .  One early morning train from Geneva continues to Verona & Venice Santa Lucia .

Lake Léman near Montreux, with Chillon Castle visible in the haze.  Right hand side going south.

Passing Chillon castle on a Milan-Geneva EuroCity train on a sunny September day.  Right hand side going south - but blink and you'll miss it!

Sion castle in the early light, seen from the morning Geneva to Venice train on the Simplon route.  Left hand side going south.

Entering the Simplon Tunnel.   A northbound Milan-Geneva train enters the famous Simplon Tunnel, once the longest rail tunnel in the world.

The Lötschberg route

Basel - Bern - Brig - Milan

Most Basel-Milan trains go via Bern.  As the train leaves Bern there are great views of Bern's Aare River gorge and its bridges.  After calling at Thun you'll see Lake Thun on you left, and shortly after calling at Spiez (junction for the line to Interlaken) the train enters the Lötschberg Base Tunnel , opened in 2007 and 34 km (21 miles) long, the train takes 16 minutes to pass through.  After the stop at Brig the train passes through the Simplon Tunnel , opened in 1906 and 19 km (12 miles) long, transit time about 8 minutes.  When you emerge from the tunnel, you're in Italy.  There are great views as the train runs along Lake Maggiore on the left hand side, before arriving in Milan Centrale .

Lake Maggiore.   Trains between Geneva, Lausanne, Basel, Bern & Milan on the Simplon & Lötschberg routes pass right by the shores of Lake Maggiore.  This is Lake Maggiore seen over lunch in the restaurant car of a Milan to Basel train on a bright winter's day.

The Gotthard route

Zurich - Lugano - Como - Milan &

Soon after leaving Zurich HB you'll get great views of the Zugersee & Vierwaldstattersee lakes, both on the right hand side as you head south.  Between Arth Goldau & Lugano the train passes through the World's longest railway tunnel, the impressive Gotthard Base Tunnel opened in 2016.  It's 57 km (35 miles) long but the train takes just 20 minutes to pass through at up to 155 mph.  After Lugano the train passes the beautiful Lake Lugano (see the photos below) with views to your left and then right, most but not all trains then call at Como San Giovanni before arrival at the magnificent Milan Centrale .  One mid-morning train from Zurich continues to Verona & Venice.

The Man in Seat 61 says:  "Until 2016, the Zurich-Milan trains travelled over the Gotthard pass through dramatic track spirals and the original much shorter (15 km) Gotthard tunnel, reaching a maximum altitude of 1,154m (3,786 feet) above sea level.  The trains now use the new Gotthard Base Tunnel , cutting journey time by replacing the most scenic hour of the Gotthard route with 20 minutes in a 57 km tunnel, and only reaching 550m (1,805 feet) above sea level.  Those of us who remember the old route might find the altered route a disappointment.  Those unencumbered by such memories will find plenty of scenery on the new route, from delightful Swiss meadows and mountains to the beauty of Lake Lugano.  But it's no longer even in the same class as the much slower, narrow-gauge Bernina route .  The new tunnel polarises the decision between fast and moderately scenic and slow but fabulously scenic."

Basel - Lucerne - Lugano - Milan

Only one direct train a day runs Basel-Lucerne-Milan, but other Lucerne-Milan departures are possible with a change at Arth Goldau into one of the Zurich-Lugano-Milan trains.  From Arth Goldau onwards this route is the same as Zurich-Lugano-Como-Milan described above.

Villages & vineyards seen on the Zurich-Milan Gotthard route on a wintry day.

This video takes you on a journey from Milan to Zurich via the Gotthard Base Tunnel on a Swiss-owned Astoro train.

Travel tips

How to tell if your train will be a Giruno or Astoro

Girunos operate most Zurich-Milan Gotthard route trains from 13 December 2020 onwards.  Other routes are operated Astoro (Swiss RABe503 or Italian ETR610, same thing).  But here's how to confirm:  Look up your train at the Swiss Railways website www.sbb.ch .  In the search results, click on your train to see details.  Assuming it's a direct EuroCity (EC) train between Switzerland & Milan, if the list of train facilities includes TT Tilting Train then it will be an Astoro, either a Swiss SBB one or an Italian Trenitalia one.  If the facilities do not include TT Tilting Train then it's due to be a Giruno which doesn't tilt.

Firstly, could anyone please give advice on the best route to get from Zermatt to Venice .

I have looked at various options, and not sure which would be the best. We are looking for the best scenic, although it will all be amazing, I'm sure. Price isn't so much an issue as this may be a once in a lifetime experience (we live in Oz). The quickest route looks to be through Brig, then Milan . We check out of our accommodation in Zermatt on Sunday 29th of September and need to check into Venice on the same day.

Secondly, what is the best way to book trains when there will be different companies, and in this case different countries. Is it best to book each leg separately (leaving enough time in between changes) directly with the particular train company or is it best to use a website/app such as Omio, to book all sections together. Is there a better website/app?

And finally...before Zermatt...we are travelling from Lyon to Chamonix, then onto Zermatt. any suggestions with train travel?

We've only ever drove in France and Italy and have never been to Switzerland before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Hello Helen,

I would book the whole trip together by an official railway company, either SBB or Trenitalia https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html Adapt your trip on the go in the case one train would be late and you miss a connection. Having the whole trip on a single ticket will help in that sense. And it will be cheaper.

Chamonix - Zermatt, again, http://www.sbb.ch/en is your best friend. Look as well for the excellent SBB app to have it all on your mobile. A 3h46' ride with 3 changes, hourly frequence.

Thank you Finsteraarhorn,

I will look into those. I'm hoping that to us, parts of the ride will be scenic and it will be just a novelty being on a train! We live in Hobart where unfortunately they no longer have trains or trams. We do have some beautiful scenery here though.

Thanks again,

I love the scenery between Brig and Arona on the line to Milan . As soon as the train comes out of the Simplon tunnel you are in Alpine forests, with a rushing stream alongside the train. Then things flatten out and you are close to the "Piccolo lago" and then the shores of Maggiore with the Boromean Islands clearly in view. It is lovely. After Arona though it is boring ! A picnic or a meal in the dining car is a good idea. You can buy the picnic in the Milan station where there are some places that sell pannini. I think the dining car is more fun!

Thank you very much Hambagahle.

Lovely descriptions of the routes.

We are very excited and think we’ll enjoy ourselves. Travelling is all about the good, the bad and the sometimes ugly!

Let's hope it is far far more of the good and little of the others!

I agree with H about the Chamonix - Martigny line. It is very scenic and quite unusual technically (some third rail pickup like on city underground trains). The problem is the because it crosses a border the two railway administrations can't get their act together to provide a through train on a regular basis, even though a few years ago the line was reequipped with trains that were supposed to be able to run the whole line

Switzerland has some of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, passing by majestic mountains, serene lakes, and charming villages.

On the most beautiful routes, the Swiss rail system offers special “panorama” trains with large windows and extra services to make the journey more enjoyable.

The easiest way to include these routes in your Switzerland itinerary is to book a scenic rail package. Instead of booking elements separately, these multi-day packages include your train tickets, seat reservations, and hotels at each destination, all in one transaction.

During booking, you can customize the trip, adding mountain excursions, upgrading or downgrading hotels, or staying longer in certain destinations.

To help you decide which scenic train tour is right for you, below we’ve highlighted our favorite Switzerland rail journeys with tips for booking and suggested activities in each destination.

Why book a Scenic Rail Journey package

1. grand train tour of switzerland, 2. lucerne-interlaken express, 3. glacier express classic (zermatt to st moritz), 4. golden pass tour (montreux + interlaken + lucerne), 5. bernina express (chur/st mortiz to tirano, it), 6. gotthard panorama express (lugano to lucerne), 7. jungfraubahn mountain railway, exclusive discount offer for rail packages, activities at each stopover, rail packages for families, using travel passes with rail packages, customizing your itinerary, about switzerland travel centre, special offer get a 5% discount on your rail package with our discount code affswissfamilyfun..

train trips from italy to switzerland

For each of the rail journey I describe below, you can book all elements separately: train tickets, seat reservations, hotels and excursions.

But it can be time-consuming, with an overwhelming route options, confusing train timetables, and complicated seat reservation systems.

Many travelers, especially those planning last minute, find that rail packages make the planning and booking process easier and faster. Then you can focus on the fun things you will do at each destination.

What rail packages include

The rail packages I’ve highlighted here include:

  • A suggested itinerary, which can be customized.
  • Train tickets to each Swiss destination in your itinerary
  • Seat reservations on the panorama trains
  • Accommodation at each destination with breakfast

We like the booking tool from Switzerland Travel Centre , which has access to hotel rooms and seat reservations with their preferred partners that you don’t necessarily see on other platforms.

Customizing the suggested itinerary

Each rail package has a suggested itinerary. But you can use the planning tool to customize the following elements to better suit your needs:

  • Add excursions to mountains and other attractions
  • Upgrade or downgrade hotels
  • Extend your stay at some destinations
  • Upgrade to 1st class/Excellence Class on panorama trains
  • Book luggage transfer on some hiking itineraries
  • Add the FLEX OPTION so you can cancel for free up to 3 days before departure

The most comprehensive rail journey is the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland. Starting and ending in Lucerne, this tour links the five best scenic rail routes described below into one big efficient loop.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The Grand Train Tour visits the most famous Swiss destinations including Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux, Zermatt, St Mortiz and Lugano. If you want the see the most of Switzerland quickly, the Grand Train Tour is the easiest way to do it.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The classic itinerary is a minimum 7 days, with a long scenic train ride each day.

  • Day 1 – Panorama train from Lucerne to Interlaken
  • Day 2 – GoldenPass Line panorama train from Interlaken to Montreux
  • Day 3 – Train from Montreux to Zermatt
  • Day 4 – Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Mortiz
  • Day 5 – Bernina Express from St Moritz to Tirano, then bus to Lugano.
  • Day 6 – Train from Lugano to Flüelen, then boat cruise to Lucerne
  • Day 7 – return by train to your airport or starting point

If you prefer to spend most of your time on the trains, land cruise style, the Grand Train Tour is a perfect option just as it is.

Use our promo code AFFSWISSFAMILYFUN to save 5% on the Grand Train Tour Classic rail package

But if you want to spend more time exploring these destinations, simply customize the tour to add a couple nights at each destination so you can explore the area before moving on. We would suggest adding an extra day in Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zermatt. See suggested activities below.

The “Best of Switzerland” rail package includes the Lucerne-Interlaken Express scenic train journey, connecting two of our favorite destinations in Switzerland. It’s a beautiful ride, passing alpine lakes, cute villages, with many mountains in view.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The base tour is 5 days with 2 nights in Lucerne, a half-day on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express train, and 2 nights in Interlaken. It also includes a visit to Jungfraujoch glacier viewpoint. The map below shows the train route as an orange line.

train trips from italy to switzerland

Here’s the suggested itinerary, which you can customize:

  • Day 1: Train to Lucerne. Activity near Lucerne. Overnight in Lucerne
  • Day 2: Free day for activity near Lucerne. Overnight in Lucerne
  • Day 3: Luzern-Interlaken Express scenic train to Interlaken. Half-day activity near Interlaken. Overnight in Interlaken.
  • Day 4: Mountain excursion to Jungfraujoch. Overnight in Interlaken.
  • Day 5: Activity near Interlaken. Train to your next destination or airport.

In this itinerary, the scenic train journey is relatively short, just two hours, but it packs in a lot of beauty into that time. It’s a great choice for those that want the scenic train experience, but prefer more time actively exploring the alps with hiking or other fun activities.

Use our promo code AFFSWISSFAMILYFUN to save 5% on the “Best of Switzerland” rail package

Suggested activities

On Day 4 in Interlaken, the tour already includes an excursion to the Jungfraujoch glacier viewpoint, which takes about 4 hours. If you get an early start, you could fit in more activities into the afternoon.

train trips from italy to switzerland

For example, visit the Jungfraujoch in the early morning. Just after lunch, ride down the mountain to Wengen and Lauterbrunnen, stopping to enjoy those villages and the Staubbach waterfall before returning to your hotel.

train trips from italy to switzerland

If you have more time, we suggest adding at least 1 more night in Lucerne and 2-3 nights in Interlaken. See below for more activity ideas for these destinations.

The Glacier Express is the most famous scenic train ride in Switzerland, starting in Zermatt and passing through many beautiful landscapes before arriving in St Moritz.

It travels through many beautiful landscapes, including over the Oberalp mountain pass and through the Rhine river gorge.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The base Glacier Express Classic itinerary is 3 days, with one night in Zermatt, one day on the scenic train, and one night St Moritz. The black line on map below is the Glacier Express.

train trips from italy to switzerland

  • Day 1: Train to Zermatt. Optional half-day activity in Zermatt. Overnight in Zermatt.
  • Day 2: Glacier Express scenic train journey to St Moritz, 8 hours. Overnight in St Moritz.
  • Day 3: Regular train from St Moritz to another Swiss destination.

The full journey is quite long at over 8 hours. So, it’s best suited for those who like a relaxing day with a view, rather than those who prefer a more active day like hiking.

Use our promo code AFFSWISSFAMILYFUN to save 5% on the Glacier Express rail package

In Zermatt, we suggest adding an excursion to the Gornergrat viewpoint, where you can visit the Riffelsee lake and optionally do a short hike. If you can, I would add one more night in Zermatt so you can do more activities (jump to ideas).

In St Moritz, you can easily fit in an easy stroll around the lakes immediately adjacent to the St Moritz train station (see walking route). If you add more nights to St Moritz, we suggest the Piz Nair mountain viewpoint, easy Morteratsch glacier path, or Corvatsch panorama trail. See more St Moritz ideas.

The GoldenPass Line is a beautiful train journey through the idyllic Swiss alps between Montreux and Interlaken. This tour also includes the Lucerne-Interlaken Express train, which adds more beautiful lakes and mountains to the experience.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The base Golden Pass Tour itinerary is 4 days, one day on the GoldenPass Express scenic train and another day on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express scenic train. This rail journey is a good choice for those wanting to spend a few days in each of these destinations: Montreux, Interlaken and Lucerne.

train trips from italy to switzerland

  • Day 1: Regular train to Montreux. Half-day activity near Montreux. Overnight in Montreux.
  • Day 2: GoldenPass Express scenic train from Montreux to Interlaken (3h). Possible half-day activity near Interlaken. Overnight in Interlaken.
  • Day 3: Lucerne-Interlaken scenic train (2h). You can do a half-day activity either in Interlaken before the train or in Lucerne after the train.
  • Day 4: Optional mountain excursion near Lucerne then regular train to another Swiss destination.
Use our promo code AFFSWISSFAMILYFUN to save 5% on this GoldenPass Tour

train trips from italy to switzerland

Here are a few activities we suggest in each location. We suggest adding 1-2 nights in each of the cities so you have more time to explore and hike in each area.

  • In Montreux, we suggest Chillon Castle or Rocher de Naye mountain viewpoint.
  • In Interlaken, Harder Kulm viewpoint or cruise on Lake Brienz for short half-day activity. Or Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn mountain viewpoints if you have at least 5 hours.
  • In Lucerne, our top pick is the Pilatus Golden Round Trip.

train trips from italy to switzerland

Jump to more activity suggestions below.

The Bernina Express is a scenic rail journey in southeast Switzerland, near St Moritz and the border of Italy. We prefer to the version that starts from Chur, which includes the famous Landwasser Viadukt, the Alp Grüm viewpoint of Palü Glacier, the Brusio Circular Viaduct and 196 bridges and 55 tunnels along the way.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The “classic” route goes from Chur or St Moritz to Tirano, Italy, then a 3h bus to Lugano. We prefer to skip the bus ride and instead take a train back to St Moritz. But if you want to continue to Lugano, book Bernina Class Route here .

train trips from italy to switzerland

Here is the base itinerary for the Bernina Express route without the bus:

  • Day 1: Train to Chur. Bernina Express scenic train to Tirano (4.5h). Overnight in Tirano.
  • Day 2: Regular train to St Moritz or other Swiss destination. We suggest going to St Moritz (about 2h30) and spending a couple nights there exploring the region more.
Use our promo code AFFSWISSFAMILYFUN to save 5% on this Bernina Express tour

In most cases, you’ll want to overnight in Chur before the Bernina Express the next day, especially if you are on the early Bernina Express train at 8:28.

After your overnight in Tirano, you can ride a regular train to St Moritz, which is included in the package. On your way, I’d suggest stopping at Morteratsch to visit the glacier. Then continue riding the regular train the rest of the way to St Moritz.

train trips from italy to switzerland

After the rail journey, we suggest spending 1-3 nights in the St Moritz area to explore the region more. At a minimum, you can walk around the beautiful lakes right in front of the city. Jump to more activity ideas for St Moritz.

train trips from italy to switzerland

This scenic route combines a boat ride along Lake Lucerne and a scenic train ride to Lugano in southern Switzerland, near the Italy border.

train trips from italy to switzerland

This journey is a great option if you are traveling from Italy into Switzerland (or vice versa), perhaps flying in or out of Milan. Otherwise, Lugano is so far from other popular Swiss destinations that it doesn’t make sense to add it unless you really want to visit the Ticino region.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The base tour is 3 days / 2 nights, with one full day of travel between Lucerne and Lugano.

  • Day 1: Regular train to Lucerne. Optional half-day activity near Lucerne. Overnight in Lucerne.
  • Day 2: Boat trip Lucerne to Flüelen (2 hour). Transfer to scenic train to Lugano . total 5 hours
  • Day 3: Free day in Lugano and regular train to another destination in Switzerland.

The journey is only offered once per day in each direction.

Use our promo code AFFSWISSFAMILYFUN to save 5% on the  Gotthard Panorama Express rail package

If you arrive early in Lucerne on day one, you could have time for a walking tour and perhaps a mountain excursion to Stanserhorn. I would definitely recommend adding 1-2 nights in Lucerne so you have time for more activities, especially if you like hiking or have kids that would enjoy an alpine playground. Jump to Lucerne activity ideas.

In Lugano, I’d suggest a cruise on Lake Lucerne to the lakeside villages Gandria or Morcote. Or perhaps an excursion to San Salvatore, a no-hike mountain viewpoint over the lake and Lugano city. See more Lugano ideas.

The shortest ride on my list is the Jungfraubahn, a cogwheel mountain train that travels up Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3454m.

Starting in Grindelwald, you ride the Eiger Express cable car up to the Eigergletscher station, a beautiful ride over alpine meadows with the Eiger peak in view.

train trips from italy to switzerland

Then you transfer to the red Jungfraubahn mountain train, which travels about 30 mins through a long tunnel carved through the mountain peak.

train trips from italy to switzerland

The train drops you at an underground station, where you ride an elevator up to indoor and outdoor viewing areas. You can walk on the glacier snow, explore a tunnel carved into the glacier ice, and even sled in summer. Learn more about visiting Jungfraujoch .

train trips from italy to switzerland

Some of the above rail packages include the Jungfraubahn or offer it as an add-on activity. If you want to book it separately, we suggest booking via Get Your Guide, which has a flexible cancellation policy.

You can get a round trip ticket from Grindelwald Terminal . If you don’t want to worry about the logistics and seat reservations, book a guided tour from Interlaken:

Our readers can geta 5% discount when they book a Scenic Rail Journey through Switzerland Travel Centre. This discount can be applied to all the rail packages highlighted above, as well as others on the STC website.

You can customize your Scenic Rail Journey packages to add activities like mountain excursion or city tours. You can also add more nights at each destination along the route so you can fit in more activities.

Here are our suggested activities at each destination. Some can be booked through with the package. Others can be done on your own.

Lucerne activities

The Lucerne region has many beautiful and fun activities, including mountain and lake excursions, city tours and museums.

Pilatus Julm observation deck overlooking Lake Lucerne in fall

Here are a few of our favorites that work well with rail journeys.

  • For a shorter half-day activity, our first choice is a walking tour of the city, either self-guided or guided. If you have kids, perhaps the Aeschbach Chocolate factory or Swiss Museum of Transport.
  • If you have about 5 hours, our top pick is the Pilatus Golden Round trip with boat ride, cogwheel train, and cable car ride. Also great with kids as it has a summer toboggan, ropes park and playground with a view.
  • If you like hiking, we suggest the Rigi Round Trip, which has spectacular views and an easy panorama trail and cliff walk. Of you could add the Wellness Rigi activity, which includes time at the thermal baths with an infinity pool overlooking the lake.
  • With kids, we suggest Titlis Engelberg, which visits the glacier with an ice tunnel and suspension bridge. Then families can ride down to the middle station to visit the big playground and fun activity trail around the Trübsee alpine lake.

See more Lucerne activities.

Interlaken / Jungfrau Region activities

In Interlaken, we suggest adding 1-3 nights so you can visit the beautiful mountains in the Jungfrau Region and optionally hike.

  • For the most spectacular no-hike viewpoint, either Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn.
  • With kids under 10, visiting Mürren alpine village and the Allmendhubel Flower Park
  • With kids 10+, ride gondola to Grindelwald First with the cliff walk, zip lines, and mountain scooters
  • For hikers, ride the mountain train to Schynige Platte and do spectacular ridge trail (about 2h, moderate difficulty).
  • For a short activity, ride the funicular train from Interlaken to the Harder Kulm viewpoint and have a traditional Swiss meal at their restaurant.

See more activities near Interlaken.

Zermatt activities

Our top pick in Zermatt is the Gornergrat viewpoint, which is already included in some itineraries like??? As part of this outing, you can visit the Riffelsee lake and optionally do a short hike on the Riffelseeweg trail.

train trips from italy to switzerland

If you love hiking, you could visit do the Matterhorn Glacier Trail, about 2 hours walking time.

With kids, we suggest the Sunnegga mountain, which has a big playground with a Matterhorn view. You can optionally add on the Flower Trail or Marmot activity trail. Older kids can do the go-carts and kick scooters.

  • See more ideas in my Zermatt articles .

St Moritz activities

If you only have one evening in St Moritz, you still fit in an easy stroll around the lakes immediately adjacent to the St Moritz train station (see walking route).

train trips from italy to switzerland

If you have more time:

  • No hike viewpoint – Piz Nair reached by a funicular that leaves directly from St Moritz, then a cable car
  • Easy hike – Morteratsch glacier path – 1h train from St Mortiz and easy walking path to view the glacier ice
  • For hikers, Furtschellas water trail visiting 5 alpine lakes.
See more St Moritz activity ideas .

Montreux Activities

In Montreux, we suggest at least 1 night so you have time for a full day activity:

  • For a short activity, visit Chillon Castle and do the walking tour of Montreux.
  • With kids, you could do the chocolate train to the Cailler chocolate factory and Gruyere cheese dairy.
  • For mountain viewpoints, we suggest either Rocher de Naye (3h) or Glacier 3000 (6h).
  • For wine lovers, ride the boat to the Lavaux Terraces and do a vineyard tour by shuttle, eBike or foot.

train trips from italy to switzerland

See more ideas near Montreux .

Lugano Activities

For a short activity, I would choose the San Salvatore mountain viewpoint or walking tour of the city, guided or self-guided.

train trips from italy to switzerland

If you have more time, we love cruising on Lake Lucerne to visit lakeside villages like Gandria or Morcote. If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, the boats are included.

If you stay a few days in Lugano region, you could more nature excursions like the famous Verzasca river, Maggia valley with its spectacular waterfalls, or mountain viewpoints like Cardada or Generoso.

See more Lugano ideas .

If you are traveling with children, I would choose a rail package with shorter train rides (2-3 hours) and spend more days in each destination doing mountain excursions and other fun activities.

My top choices for families would be the Best of Switzerland (Lucerne + Interlaken) or Famous Mountain Peaks (Interlaken + Zermatt).

I wouldn’t choose the Glacier Express Classic, since the train ride is 8 hours. If you really want to do the Glacier Express, I would choose a shorter segment, like Zermatt to Andermatt or Chur to St Moritz and spend a few days in the destinations on each end.

Booking for children

Children age 6-15 require a train ticket, which is usually half fare, and a seat reservation.

Children under age 6 do not need a train ticket. But they do need a seat reservation if you want them to have a seat.

During the booking process, you select the age of each child, which then applies the appropriate discount.

If you plan to get the Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Card, these will reduce your rail package cost.

Swiss Travel Pass

If you are spending at least 5 days in Switzerland, it’s usually best to get the Swiss Travel Pass , which includes unlimited train travel all over Switzerland, including scenic rail journeys.

When booking a rail package, select the “Swiss Travel Pass” for each traveler as shown below.

train trips from italy to switzerland

Then the train ticket cost is deducted from the package fee. You only pay for the seat reservation and hotels and activities in each destination.

Purchase your Swiss Travel Pass separately and make sure it covers the days of your scenic rail journey. We suggest buying this pass on Get Your Guide , which has a flexible cancellation policy.

Buy Swiss Travel Pass here .

The Swiss Travel Pass also includes entrance to over 500 museums and discounts on some activities.

Half Fare Card

The Swiss Half Fare Card is another discount travel card that gives you a 50% discount on all public transport and most mountain railways throughout Switzerland, including scenic rail journeys.

Some travelers find that the Swiss Half Fare Card is a better fit than the Swiss Travel Pass, particularly if they are renting a car for most of the trip.

  • Purchase the one month Swiss Half Fare Card

If you plan to have a Swiss Half Fare Card (or are a local and already have one), choose that option for each traveler as shown below. The discount will be applied in the last step.

train trips from italy to switzerland

During the booking process, you can customize the itinerary in several ways.

On most itineraries, you can add extra nights at each destination. When you are viewing the itinerary, simply click the + button next to the destination. The suggested hotel may change based on availability.

train trips from italy to switzerland

Add activities

Most itineraries allow you to add bookable activities like mountain excursions, paragliding or city tours. When you click the Add Activity button, it will display activities that can be booked through the tool.

Of course, there are many other activities that aren’t bookable through the tool, which you can do on your won. Note that some itineraries already include some activities, which may be fixed.

How do I get around Switzerland?

There are many ways to get around Switzerland , the two main ways are using public transportation and renting a car. I’ll highlight the best way to get to each destination below. This Switzerland itinerary can easily be used with either a car or by train.

If you choose to get a rental car in Switzerland, I always recommend using this site to compare rates and cars.

If you choose to use public transportation in Switzerland, I recommend getting the Swiss Travel Pass to maximize your time and save you money. The Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited train rides on most lines, free or discounted gondola rides, and discounts to many attractions though Switzerland.

I find that it’s especially worth buying the Swiss Travel Pass if you are planning to visit Zermatt because the expensive Gornergratt train is quite expensive, and it’s half off with the pass. If you’re comfortable riding trains and buses, I think it’s the best way to travel in Switzerland.

Where do I purchase my Swiss Travel Pass?

You can purchase your Swiss Travel Pass here . Just select the correct number of days for your Switzerland itinerary and check out. The pass begins on your selected date and runs continuously. The Swiss Travel Pass comes in. 3, 4, 6, 8, and 15 day increments.

Swiss Half Fare Card

If you’re unsure of your dates or the amount of time your Switzerland itinerary will be, it might be a good idea to purchase a Swiss Half Fare Card instead. This pass is good for one month and will offer 50% off most trains. There seems to be less of a discount on shorter journeys. I prefer to purchase the more expensive Swiss Travel Pass just for ease of use while I am in the country. But the Swiss Half Fare Card may be a better option if you are only planning on taking several long and expensive rail journeys. You can purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card here .

Renting a Car in Switzerland

If you want a little more freedom during your trip, you may want to consider renting a car in Switzerland . You’ll have the ability to reach some more off-the-beaten-path places that trains can’t reach. Driving in Switzerland is easy, especially if you’re from the US because they drive on the right side of the road.

Download the SBB App for Switzerland Transportation

SBB App – Public transportation in Switzerland is shockingly punctual, clean, fast, and efficient. The SBB app will tell you when and where to get your trains and buses to take you where you want to go. This is the most important app you’ll need in Switzerland if you’re only traveling by public transportation.

I hope this guide to Switzerland transportation will help you get around the country with ease. Be sure to check out the most beautiful places in Switzerland and our Switzerland Itinerary.

There are lots of pros and cons to renting a car in Switzerland and using public transportation. Here’s a good list

Here is a list of pros and cons for traveling Switzerland by train vs. by rental car:

Traveling by Train in Switzerland

  • More scenic views out the window
  • Can relax and enjoy the ride
  • No need to focus on driving/navigation
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Arrive directly in city centers
  • Less flexibility with schedule/stops
  • Can be more expensive
  • Limited luggage space
  • More flexibility with schedule and route
  • Can stop wherever you want
  • Usually cheaper than train
  • More privacy
  • Can carry more luggage
  • Less scenic views
  • Have to focus on driving
  • More planning required for navigation
  • Have to find and pay for parking
  • More environmental impact

I hope this helps you plan your trip to Switzerland!

PM Modi set to embark on his first overseas trip to Italy days after taking oath I Know why

Prime minister narendra modi is anticipated to commence his inaugural international journey to italy-- mere days following his re-election as india's prime minister for the third successive term..

PM Modi with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni

Soon after taking the oath, he would fly to Rome, where the Group of Seven (G7) meeting is scheduled for June 13 and 14. Earlier, his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, invited PM Modi to attend the G7 Summit. Notably, Meloni was among the first few leaders who congratulated Modi on his third consecutive electoral victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

Meloni expressed confidence in continued collaboration between Italy and India, highlighting the strong bond between the two nations. In a reply, PM Modi extended gratitude to his Italian counterpart and stressed New Delhi remains committed to deepening India-Italy strategic partnership.

G7 Summit in Italy

The G7 Summit will be held in Borgo Egnazia (Fasano) in Apulia, on June 13-15, 2024. The event will bring together the Leaders of the seven-member States, as well as the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission representing the European Union.

It is expected that US President Joe Biden, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, UK PM Rishi Sunak, France's Emmanuel Macron, Japan's Fumio Kishisa, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will attend the much-awaited event.

Besides G7, the Indian Prime Minister has also been invited to the upcoming peace summit scheduled in Switzerland on June 15 and 16. India has yet to take a call on the level of its participation in the Summit.

Zelenskyy hopes India would attend Peace Summit

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskky, in a congratulatory message, pushed New Delhi to join the upcoming peace summit. "Everyone in the world recognises the significance and weight of India's role in global affairs. It is critical that we all work together to ensure a just peace for all nations. In this regard, we also look forward to seeing India attend the Peace Summit," said Zelenskyy.

However, in a reply, PM Modi assured of advocating peace in the world but did not mention whether he would attend the Ukraine peace summit or not. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba visited New Delhi in March. During his meeting with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar, he too pressed him to attend the summit and sought his significant role in the summit. However, the Indian leader has not commented on Kuleba's remarks.
