Capturing the Moments: Photography Tips

As you embark on a thrilling helicopter tour over Hong Kong, capturing the breathtaking moments with your camera becomes an essential part of the experience. Here are some photography tips to help you make the most of this extraordinary opportunity:

1. Use a Wide-Angle Lens: To capture the expansive views and grandeur of the city from above, opt for a wide-angle lens. This will allow you to include more of the stunning landscapes and iconic landmarks in your frame.

2. Pay Attention to Light: Lighting plays a vital role in photography, and aerial photography is no exception. Keep an eye on the direction and intensity of the light to achieve the desired effect in your photos. Experiment with different angles to capture the city bathed in golden sunlight or illuminated by the vibrant city lights at night.

3. Stabilize Your Camera: Given the fast movement of the helicopter, it’s crucial to stabilize your camera to avoid blurry images. Consider using a tripod or a stabilized camera setup to ensure sharp shots throughout the flight. If handholding your camera, use a fast shutter speed and minimize camera shake as much as possible.

4. Look for Unique Perspectives: A helicopter tour offers a unique viewpoint, so take advantage of it! Look for interesting angles, patterns, and compositions that showcase the city’s landmarks in a fresh and innovative way. Experiment with different framing techniques to add depth and visual interest to your shots.

5. Capture Details and Landmarks: While wide-angle shots are great for capturing the overall scenery, don’t forget to zoom in and capture the intricate details of the city’s landmarks. From the architectural marvels of the skyscrapers to the delicate beauty of the traditional buildings, showcase the diversity and uniqueness of Hong Kong’s urban landscape.

6. Embrace High ISO: In low-light situations or during night flights, don’t be afraid to increase your camera’s ISO setting to capture the city’s dazzling lights. Higher ISO values will allow you to maintain faster shutter speeds and avoid blurry images.

7. Experiment with Settings: Take advantage of different camera settings such as aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual mode to have full control over your images. Experiment with different settings to achieve the desired depth of field and creative effects in your photographs.

Remember, while capturing stunning photos is important, try to strike a balance between documenting the journey and fully immersing yourself in the experience. Take some time to simply enjoy the breathtaking views without the distraction of the camera lens. After all, it’s the memories and emotions attached to the experience that truly make it unforgettable.

With these photography tips in mind, get ready to capture the unforgettable moments of your Hong Kong helicopter tour. From sweeping panoramas to minute details, your photographs will serve as lasting mementos of this thrilling adventure.

I did the helicopter-tour and in this blog post, I will share with you my photos and also my tips for time of day to fly, how to shoot photos and give my review of the flight.

HOW TO BOOK THE HONG KONG HELICOPTER TOUR

In Hong Kong, there is just one main company flying the helicopter tours so it makes it an easy choice when deciding who to fly with. The company is called HeliServices and operates from the top-floor and helipad of the Peninsula Hotel , which is one of the fanciest hotels in Hong Kong.

You will need to book in advance, which you can do online through Klook, which is actually the cheapest way to book your helicopter flight. The price for one person on a group flight for 18-minutes is $2750 HDK ($350 USD). This isn’t the cheapest heli-flight price in the world but Hong Kong is an expensive city so it’s on par with the city prices. The private tour is ridiculously priced at more than $4000 USD.

The things to consider:

  • You will be part of a group flight. The helicopter seats six people so there are 4 window seats and two middle seats. You can still see out of the windows but the view is much better from the window seat. Luckily for us, there were only four on our flight so everyone had a window.
  • Because it is a group tour, you cannot pick the exact time you want to leave. I asked for a sunset flight but they told me the group tours leave at 2:30 pm and if I wanted the sunset time slot I would need to book the private tour. The lighting and views would be better at sunset probably but it was still great at 2:30 pm.
  • The flight is 18-minutes. It’s quite short but because Hong Kong isn’t a large region, you can still see a lot in a short time. The longer private flights of up to 45-minutes are thousands of dollars to book.
  • It is quite an expensive activity but for $350 per person to fly over Hong Kong, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity so it will be an experience you remember, rather than that night out on Hong Kong Island you will forget by the next day!

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE HONG KONG HELICOPTER TOUR

We arrived at the Peninsula Hotel and met the staff on the ground floor we waited for the others from our group tour to arrive. Off we went to the top floor in the elevator and into the waiting and briefing room that had epic views back out to Hong Kong Island. After a quick briefing, we headed out onto the helipad, which is on the roof of the Peninsula Hotel and strapped into our seats.

helicopter trip hong kong

It wasn’t a doors-off helicopter flight, which is my favorite but it was going to be some epic cityscapes and landscapes so I was stoked. Our flight began by heading off from Tsim Sha Tsui and circling back around towards Tsuen Wan. On the way, we flew over all of the shipping yards, which was actually a really interesting part of the flight. We could see all of the multi-colored containers and one huge container ship being loaded up at the dock.

helicopter trip hong kong

We then headed inland and found ourselves in the thick of the Hong Kong jungle after leaving the city behind. That’s why I love Hong Kong, it’s 85% natural parklands but most people don’t realize that and think it’s just shopping and business buildings. Flying over it all in a helicopter really shows you just how green Hong Kong is.

helicopter trip hong kong

The pilot needs to do a refuel every few flights and luckily for us, it was our flight so we had a bit of an extended journey. We had to stop, get out and wait for 5-minutes at the refueling base but I think it extended our trip by 15-minutes so we had almost double the time of a normal flight!

After the refuel, we set off again and before too long, we found ourselves cruising over the iconic Lion Rock . It’s one of the most popular hikes in Hong Kong but on this day we didn’t have to put in too much effort to enjoy the view.

helicopter trip hong kong

We were now on our way back to Tsim Sha Tsui but we still had to do a giant victory lap over Hong Kong Island, which is the iconic business district of Hong Kong. It can really only be described as a mini-New York with urban density on par to some of the busiest cities in the world. The birds of view over the financial district and the high-rises is such a unique perspective and one of the highlights of the Hong Kong helicopter tour.

helicopter trip hong kong

That rounded out an epic Hong Kong helicopter tour. It was an expensive trip but as you can see from the photos you get to see quite a diverse range of landscapes in such a short amount of time. Comment below if you end up going on the trip and let me know how it was!

TIPS FOR SHOOTING PHOTOS ON A HELICOPTER FLIGHT

Shooting photos through glass in the middle of the day can be very difficult. Here are a few of my tips to make sure you have a good experience taking photos out on the helicopter flight around Hong Kong. If you aren’t into taking photos, skip the tips below.

  • Remove any filters or polarizers from you camera as they may not work through the glass of the helicopter and distort your colors.
  • Set your camera up with your preferred settings before you get on the flight as things happen quickly from the first minute.
  • Rehearse taking photos and changing settings so you aren’t flustered in the heat of the moment.
  • I shoot in aperture priority, wide focus, and multi-metering mode so that my settings are pretty automatic but I still have some control. I make sure my shutter is no slower than 1/1000 so that I don’t have to worry about motion blur.
  • Try not to shoot directly into the sun as it can be difficult to capture all the highlights doing so.
  • On this flight, I had to hold me camera high on the window to avoid the glare and reflection. Figure this out early rather than having reflections, glares and marks on your photos. You’ll still see some in my photos below but for the most part they turned out okay considering it was full sun and through the glass.
  • Unless you are keen on a tighter lens for a specific purpose, I suggest a wide angle. I shot all of my photos on a Sony A7iii witha 16-35mm lens.

Where To Get A Helicopter Ride In Hong Kong

A helicopter ride anywhere is a pretty special experience, but one that will see you soaring over the dramatic skyline of Hong Kong ?

Well, that has to be up there on the bucket list for many people.

One thing that makes a helicopter ride here so very dramatic is that you can fly right over the amazingly tall sky scrapers that jostle for space on the city’s prime real estate.

But as well as enjoying the amazing sight of these super tall buildings, the amazing bird’s eye view also provides you with the incredible sight of the wonderful protected parkland that surrounds this congested metropolis.

The azure blue of the ocean beneath only serves as a contrast to the deep greens of the mountain parklands and the concrete jungle of the city itself.

All in all, a helicopter ride over Hong Kong will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.

But surely taking such a ride is one that only the privileged and the rich can enjoy?

Well, we’re not going to say that it’s cheap, but if you know where to look, then it is possible to have a helicopter experience for a price that won’t quite break the bank.

Hong Kong Peninsula

The luxury Peninsula Hotel offers some good helicopter packages in association with the company Heli Services. These include its “fly and relax” tour, “fly and dine” option, and the “flight seeing tour” – each fairly self-explanatory, and discussed in more detail below.

In addition, if you book a room at the hotel, you can also take advantage of a helicopter transfer to and from the airport (at an extra cost, naturally).

So, what can you expect from such a tour?

  • First of all, you ascend to the Clipper Lounge in the hotel, which itself offers a stunning view of the city below. Located on the 30 th floor, vertigo sufferers can begin to acclimatize themselves to the thrill that is soon to follow.
  • The packages on offer begin with a shared tour, in which you share the 6-seater bird with other passengers. Flying on the company’s MD920 helicopter, your tour will last approximately 15 minutes, and take you all around Hong Kong Island and the famous Victoria Harbour . You can take this flight during daylight hours from 09:00 daily. The cost is HK$1,999 per person.
  • For something a little more personal, you can also take a 15-minute private helicopter tour. This will take you and your chosen companions swooping over the beaches and bays of Hong Kong Island, as well as seeing the wonderful skyline of Victoria Harbour. This tour costs HK$9,995 for approximately 15 minutes.
  • If 15 minutes doesn’t seem long enough, then a 30-minute private tour (HK$18,000) will see you flying over Kowoloon , Sai Kung, and the Hong Kong Geopark , in addition to the regular tour mentioned above.
  • For HK$26,500, you can enjoy a private 45-minute experience that will take in other delights such as the New Territories and Lantau Island .

There are also other specialist sightseeing tours on offer. These include:

  • The Michael Wong  Experience. Actor Michael is something of a local celebrity in Hong Kong. In addition, he’s a helicopter pilot. This experience allows you to meet and fly with the celebrated actor himself. At a price of HK$15,000, this includes a 20-minute flight, an autographed photo, and a photo of you with Michael aboard the helicopter.
  • Filming and photography flights are also available. For a cost starting from HK$35,000 per hour, you can hire a helicopter to get some amazing and unique shots and footage of the city.
  • And what about the ultimate wedding proposal? Charter your own private helicopter for a cost of HK$35,000 per hour (although you can book this for a minimum of 15 minutes pro rata), and you can video and/or photograph this amazing life moment!
  • In addition to the flight itself, you can schedule a landing anywhere you choose (a complimentary visit and consultation prior to the day to organise this with the operations team is included in the price). This certainly would be one marriage proposal in a million…
  • You can also book a VIP/charter service to allow you travel to and from the 30 th floor Clipper Lounge at the Peninsula Hotel to the airport or to Macau. For prices, contact Heliservices directly.
  • And, as we mentioned above, you can combine your helicopter tour with a wonderful lunch or dinner for up to five people. This option allows you to choose the dining experience from one of the many venues in the hotel, including The Verandah , Felix , or Chesa .

There is also the “fly and relax” tour that includes a 15-minute sightseeing flight, followed by a 60-minute treatment (massage or facial) in the Peninsula Spa.

  • You can then enjoy lunch or afternoon tea by the pool, and also get full use of the relaxation area, thermal suite, harbour view sauna, crystal steam room, experience shower, and infrared ice fountain. Phew! If that doesn’t relax you after the white-knuckle thrill of a helicopter flight, then nothing will!
  • The cost of the fly and relax package begins from HK$14,715 for two people. As the number of people goes up, the price becomes proportionally cheaper, at HK$17,575 for three people and HK$20,435 for four.

Please be aware that children under the age of 2 cannot be accommodated in any of the above tours.

Helicopters Hong Kong

The aptly named, Helicopters Hong Kong offers small, 4-seater helicopter tours over the city (1 for the pilot, 3 for passengers) and a slightly larger 6-seater option.

Prices and durations of the tours vary, and you’ll need to contact the company directly for these details.

Gift Options

The website Spoilt also offers a couple of helicopter rides over Hong Kong. These include a trip where you join with others for the experience, or a private helicopter tour that starts from HK$12,380.

US proposal for cease-fire in Gaza gets UN Security Council backing with 14-0 vote

The Biden administration's proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza received the United Nations' endorsement Monday when the Security Council voted 14-0 in favor of a resolution supporting the plan, with only Russia abstaining but not vetoing. Still, acceptance by the warring parties remains elusive.

The U.S. drafted the measure and finalized it Sunday after six days of negotiations among council members. The three-stage proposal would bring about an immediate stop in the fighting between Israel and Hamas, along with the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinians prisoners.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed misgivings about the version of the plan President Joe Biden made public May 31, though the White House has said Israel was involved in crafting it. Netanyahu is under pressure from the far-right flank of his governing coalition to continue the war, and in addition to the truce the proposal calls for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and, in the second phase, a permanent end to the conflict.

Hamas leaders responded favorably to the resolution, saying in a statement that it "affirmed the permanent cease-fire in Gaza, the complete withdrawal, the prisoners’ exchange, the reconstruction (of Gaza), the return of the displaced to their areas of residence, the rejection of any demographic change or reduction in the area of the Gaza Strip, and the delivery of needed aid to our people in the Strip.''

The Security Council measure says Israel has accepted the truce proposal, presses Hamas to do the same "and urges both parties to fully implement its terms without delay and without condition."

But Netanyahu has voiced not such approval, and senior Israeli U.N. diplomat Reut Shapir Ben-Naftaly did not make that commitment either, telling the council Israel's goals are still "to free all the hostages, to destroy Hamas' military and governing capabilities and to ensure that Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel in the future."

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., told CNN the administration expects Israel to come on board. "(Biden) has conveyed confidence in the Israeli acceptance of this deal,'' she said. "What we need now is for Hamas to accept the deal. They welcomed the resolution immediately after it was passed. They need to take the next step and accept the deal and start to release hostages.''

Developments:

∎ Three of four Israeli hostages rescued Saturday were being held at the home of Abdallah Aljamal, a Palestinian journalist and member of Hamas who was killed during the operation, the Israeli military said.

∎ Hamas leaders have given militants holding hostages standing orders to shoot their captives if they think Israeli forces are coming to free them, Israeli officials told the New York Times .

∎ The Biden administration is close to finalizing a treaty with Saudi Arabia that would commit the U.S. to help defend the Gulf nation while encouraging diplomatic ties between Riyadh and Israel, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. and Saudi officials.

Day after rescue a resignation:, Israeli War Cabinet minister Benny Gantz steps down

Blinken highlights benefits of truce deal to Netanyahu

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken pitched the latest cease-fire proposal in both Cairo and Jerusalem as he met first with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and later Monday with Netanyahu.

On the same day to U.N. Security backed the American truce plan, Blinken pointed out to Netanyahu that not only the U.S. but other world leaders backed the proposal, according to a State Department readout of their meeting.

Besides stressing the U.S. commitment to Israel's security, Blinken "reiterated that the proposal on the table would unlock the possibility of calm along Israel’s northern border and further integration with countries in the region,'' the readout said.

While in Israel, Blinken also met with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who has clashed at times with Netanyahu over the best approach to the war. "The Secretary commended Israel’s readiness to conclude a deal and affirmed that the onus is on Hamas to accept,'' State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.

Hamas accuses Blinken, America of being biased toward Israel

Before leaving for Israel following his meeting with el-Sisi, Blinken appealed for other Middle East countries to lean on Hamas to end the war by taking the proposed truce deal.

"My message to governments throughout the region, to people throughout the region, is if you want a cease-fire, press Hamas to say 'yes,'" Blinken told reporters.

Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters that Blinken's comments reflected deeply entrenched U.S. support for Israel and were an obstacle to peace. "Blinken's speech during his visit to Egypt is an example of bias to Israel," Abu Zuhri said. "It offers an American cover to the holocaust conducted by the occupation in Gaza."

It was not clear how the hostage raid, which the Gaza Health Ministry says killed 274 Palestinians , might impact the cease-fire effort. The State Department is pressing its position that the deal is a win for both sides.

"The Secretary will discuss how the cease-fire proposal would benefit both Israelis and Palestinians," the department said in a statement. "He will underscore that it would alleviate suffering in Gaza, enable a massive surge in humanitarian assistance, and allow Palestinians to return to their neighborhoods."

Mother of rescued hostage: 'I am one of the lucky ones'

The mother of one of the four hostages freed by Israeli commandos said her son learned Arabic and some Russian while in captivity and that he was sustained by the bond formed with the other hostages.

Almog Meir Jan was among more than 250 people swept away by militants during the attack Oct. 7 in Israeli border communities that left almost 1,200 people dead. His mother, Orit Meir, said Monday he had forged the bond with fellow hostages Andrey Kozlov, Shlomi Ziv and Noa Argamani. The four were liberated Saturday amid a hail of gunfire and rocket attacks that the Gaza Health Ministry says killed hundreds of Palestinians.

“They were held together for more than half a year,” Meir said at a briefing translated by the  Times of Israel.  “They did not give up hope. … They kept each other’s spirits up. Almog never gave up his belief that he would make it through the experience of captivity.”

Meir said she was relieved her son, whose father died in Israel hours before his son’s rescue, is physically well but said a full recovery will take time.

“They took away his freedom,” she said. “We are giving him the space and power to make decisions for himself. This is very critical. I am sure he has a way to go, but he is starting from a good place.”

Meir stressed that more than 100 families continue to wait, unable to breathe or sleep without thinking about their loved ones held in Gaza. “I am one of the lucky ones,” she said.

Report: US might negotiate with Hamas for release of 5 Americans

Biden administration officials have discussed potentially negotiating a deal directly with Hamas to secure the release of five Americans being held hostage in Gaza if current cease-fire talks involving Israel fail, NBC reported, citing two current and two former senior U.S. officials the media outlet did not name. The talks would not include Israel and would be conducted through Qatari officials, said the senior U.S. officials, all of whom have been briefed on the discussions.

The U.S. is also hoping to recover the bodies of three other Americans who were killed Oct. 7, NBC reported.

Blinken, asked about the report as he left Cairo for Israel, said, "The best way, the most effective way to get everyone home, including the American hostages, is through this proposal, is through the cease-fire deal that's on the table right now."

Netanyahu remains committed to 'total victory'

Blinken's mission, which will also include stops in Qatar and Jordan, got a boost Monday when the U.N. Security Council voted in favor of a U.S. cease-fire resolution. The Biden administration says the Israeli government has already expressed support for the plan, Netanyahu's office has not confirmed the claim.

Blinken was meeting Monday with Netanyahu, who has been buoyed by a weekend rescue of four hostages that drew rave reviews in Israel and reiterated his stand that the war will not stop until Hamas is eliminated.

"We are committed to total victory," Netanyahu said in a statement . "We do not want to – and cannot – abandon the arena, not just because of the wonderful boys who have fallen, but because this is the future of the country. We have no choice."

US announces latest round of sanctions targeting Houthi rebels

The Treasury Department announced sanctions against 10 people, companies and ships accused of illegally transporting oil and other commodities for the Yemen-based Houthi rebels and financial facilitator Sa’id al-Jamal. The Houthis have been attacking ships in the Middle East since November, claiming they're a show of support for the Palestinians under siege in Gaza. The latest round of sanctions include shipping companies based in India, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

Brian Nelson, U.S. Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said in a statement the government is "committed to disrupting and degrading the Houthis’ ability to engage in attacks against commercial shipping and naval vessels.''

Palestinians 'exhausted and helpless' after assault on refugee camp

Residents in the central Gaza refugee camp of Nuseirat were clearing away debris and searching for the dead after the massive Israel raid that freed four hostages Saturday. Palestinian officials say 274 people were killed, including scores of women and children, in one of the deadliest assaults of the war.

"We are exhausted and helpless, enough is enough," said Jehad, who fled with his family to the nearby town of Deir al-Balah. The family had already been displaced from Gaza City to Nuseirat, to Khan Younis, to Rafah and back to Nuseirat since the war began.

Nuseirat resident Anas Alyan, standing outside the ruins of his home, described how Israel commandos in shorts had been shooting in the streets while F-16s and quadcopters − helicopters with four rotors − fired from the air.

"Anyone moving or walking was killed immediately," he said. "There are still children under this building. We don't know how to pull them out."
