Nepal Visa

Planning to Nepal? Everyone needs a visa (except Indian nationals), but luckily it’s an easy process. Here’s the latest information on obtaining a tourist visa and how it works for visa-on-arrival. Once you land at the Tribhuvan International Airport , you can get the visa on arrival. Following certain regulations and formalities, you can get a visa for Nepal (90 days) in less than an hour.

Documents You Need for visa

Check your passport..

Make sure that your passport is valid for six months within arrival in Nepal.

Passport Photos.

You only need a single photo for your visa application, but you’ll need a lot of them if you plan to go trekking and do other activities in Nepal. Keep your passport-size photos in person for accessibility. There are also photo booths at the airport in case you forget to bring. Keep at least 4 copies of your passport-size photos. Nepal visa photo size is not specified so just bring the regular passport size photo that you use in your country.

Immigration Papers (Arrival card).

Typically, you will get the immigration papers while on the plane before you land. Make sure to fill out these forms right away to pass immigration upon arriving.

Tourist Visa.

All foreigners entering Nepal, except Indians, require a visa. You can acquire a visa from the Nepali embassy in your country or upon arrival at the airport. Tourists visas are valid for 3-6 months within your travel to Nepal . Single entry visas are valid for 15/ 30 and 90 days which respectively costs $30, $50 and $125. You will get a multiple-entry visa.

Visa Application Process at the Airport

A lot of foreigners opt to get their Nepalese visa at the airport upon arrival. Bring your documents to the visa registration machines. Scan the barcode of your passport and take your photo. Get the slip of paper that the machine generates and bring this to the counter, along with the payment. Finally, have your passport stamped and get your visa.

Online Nepal Visa Application Form.

You can fill out the application form online at home before traveling to Nepal. You can visit this site to fill out your immigration papers: https://online.nepalimmigration.gov.np/tourist-visa and print the confirmation. You can submit the printed confirmation at the immigration desk. This is valid for 15 days only.

Extending Your Visa.

You can extend your Nepal visa for up to 150 days at the Immigration Department in Kathmandu or Pokhara. It costs $30 for 15 days and $2 per day after that. Usually, the turn-around is the same day, and you’ll need to submit your passport, extension fee, one photo, and the application extension form to complete the process.

Many remote rural areas, especially those close to the Tibet border, require a restricted area permit. This applies to those trekking in the Manaslu, Mustang, Nar-Phu, Tsum Valley, Dolpo, Humla and Kanchenjunga regions. Permits range from US$10 to US$500 per week and you will need the help of a registered trekking agency to secure one.

Final Notes.

In the arrivals’ hall, you’ll find electronic registration machines that read your passport, take your photo, and print out a completed form to submit to immigration. Be sure to have the following items handy:

  • Cash to pay the visa fee (USD is best, especially at land crossings, but you can also pay with EUR, CHF, GBP, AUD, CAD, HKD, SGD, and JPY).
  • A passport that is valid for at least six months.

Please note that the following nationalities cannot obtain a visa-on-arrival: AFG, IRQ, CMR, GHA, SOM, SWZ, PSE, ZWE, NGA, ETH, and LBR.

Nepal Tourist Visa Guide – 2024

If you are planning to travel to Nepal in 2024, a country known as the heart of the Himalayas and a paradise place for active tourism, you will need some preparation, starting with your tourist visa.

Nepal Tourist Visa Guide

In this guidelines, we will provide you with all the information you need to obtain a tourist visa for Nepal, including tips on how to make the process easier with a compliant Nepali visa photo.

Table of contents

Nepal visa policy and updates in 2024, can you transit nepal without a visa, nepal tourist visa vs visa-on-arrival: the difference, nepal visa duration, how to apply for nepal visa online, documents required for nepal visa application, nepal visa photo requirements, get a nepal visa photo online, nepal visa photo app, nepal tourist visa fees, nepal tourist visa extension rules.

For most travelers, a visa is required to enter Nepal. Only Indian citizens enjoy a special privilege that allows them to travel freely between India and Nepal without needing a Nepal visit visa.

The types of visa in Nepal include Tourist Visa, Business Visa, Transit Visa, Work Visa, Relationship Visa, and Student Visa. If you're visiting Nepal other than for tourism, you need to apply for a different type of visa directly at the Nepal Embassy or Nepalese Department of Immigration in Kathmandu.

You can obtain a tourist visa upon your arrival at the port of entry into the country. However, citizens of several countries, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Swaziland, Somalia, Liberia, Iraq, Ethiopia, Palestine, Syria, and Afghanistan, must apply for their visas in advance, as they're not eligible for a Visa-on-Arrival.

Want to avoid the long queues at the airport? You can fill out the Nepal visa application form online within 15 days of your trip, but remember that the form is only valid for 15 days, so timing is of the essence.

Also, the Nepal Government has started issuing Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of the traditional sticker or handwritten visa. Now, the Embassy will give out eTAs to travelers planning to visit Nepal.

If you're just passing through Nepal and won't be staying more than 24 hours, you can get a Nepal Transit Visa.

You can obtain this visa at Kathmandu Airport. You'll need your onward tickets and any necessary visas for the next country you're visiting. Remember, the Nepal transit visa cost is only USD 5.

In general, every foreign visitor receives a Tourist Visa to enter Nepal. Visa-on-Arrival is just one way to get this visa, directly upon landing in Nepal or at other specific entry points.

The main difference is where you get your visa. A Tourist Visa can be obtained from a Nepal consulate or online before you travel, while a Visa-on-Arrival, as the name suggests, is obtained when you arrive in Nepal.

Applying for a Nepal Tourist Visa online can be more convenient for travelers who have already planned their trip and have all the necessary documents ready. This way, you can avoid the long queues at the airport and immigration offices

Note that Visa-on-Arrival doesn’t apply to everyone. For example, people from countries like Afghanistan, Ghana, Cameroon, Swaziland, Palestine, Syria, Zimbabwe, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Somalia are not eligible for Visa-on-Arrival. If you're from one of these countries or a refugee with travel documents, you must obtain a visa before arriving in Nepal.

You have the option to get a Nepal tourist visa for 15, 30, or 90 days, and if you want to stay longer, you can extend it. Remember that the Nepal visa duration will be considered from the date of arrival in Nepal.

To apply online, follow the instructions below:

  • Go to the Nepal Department of Immigration website and fill out the Electronic Travel Authorization for a Tourist Visa form.
  • your passport information and a recent digital 1.5×1.5 inches photo of yourself.
  • your home address, phone numbers, and email.
  • address and phone number of your accommodation place in Nepal.

After you submit your application, you'll receive an email barcode receipt immediately. Remember to print this receipt and carry it with you. It’s required when you pay the visa fee in cash upon arrival. This receipt will also list any other documents you might need to show the immigration officers.

To apply for a Nepal Tourist Visa, make sure you have the following Nepal visa documents:

  • A filled-out and printed Nepal Tourist Visa Application Form. You can complete this online.
  • Your actual passport, which should be valid for at least six more months and have at least two empty pages for the visa.
  • Copies of the page in your passport that contains your photo and personal information.
  • At least one recent photo of yourself that is passport size (1.5×1.5 inches with a white background). It's a good idea to have extra photos on hand if you need them for visa extensions, payments, or other needs.
  • Details of where you'll be staying in Nepal, such as a hotel booking confirmation or address.
  • Your return ticket or proof of onward travel.
  • Bank statements for the last three months, showing that you can support yourself during your stay.
  • A receipt or proof that you've paid the visa fee.

Do I need a passport photo for a Nepal visa? – Yes, you will need a squared 1.5×1.5 inches passport-sized photo.

When taking your photo for the Nepal visa, here's what else to remember:

  • Stand against a plain white background.
  • The photo should show your head covering about 70% of the frame.
  • Make sure your face is clearly shown, with your eyes open and visible.

Tribhuvan International Airport is the only international airport in Nepal. The Immigration Office at TIA (Tribhuvan International Airport) provides “visa on arrival” services to tourists flying to Nepal. The “on arrival” visa process is quick and straightforward, although there may be queues during peak tourist season. If you wish to avoid these queues, you can also obtain a visa from a Nepalese diplomatic mission abroad before arrival. The choice is yours. If you have obtained a visa from a Nepalese diplomatic mission, you must enter Nepal within six months from the date the visa was issued. Your total stay is counted from the day you enter Nepal.

“On arrival” visas are tourist visas that allow multiple re-entries into Nepal. Visit Nepal for purposes other than tourism (such as sightseeing, tours, travel, mountaineering, trekking, or visiting friends and family). You should still obtain a tourist visa to enter the country. However, you will need to change your visa category to reflect your purpose and length of stay in Nepal by presenting the necessary documents to the Department of Immigration.

Nationals of certain countries must obtain visas from a nearby Nepalese diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) before arriving in Nepal. Please check the link to determine if you are eligible for a visa on arrival.

To obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, follow these steps:

  • Obtain a CCMC form HERE and have a PCR test within 72 hours of arrival.
  • 15 days: $30.00
  • 30 days: $50.00
  • 90 days: $125.00
  • Proceed to the immigration desk with your online form, payment receipts, and passport. Present your documents to the immigration officer for visa processing. You will receive a visa upon the officer’s satisfaction.

Gratis Visa Gratis visas are issued free of charge to the following categories of visa applicants:

  • Children under ten years of age
  • SAARC citizens (except Afghanistan) visiting Nepal for the first time in a given visa year for up to 30 days. Afghan citizens may be eligible for gratis visas on arrival if recommended by the Department of Immigration. If you are an Afghan citizen, you can request the institution invite you to Nepal to obtain the necessary paperwork with the Department of Immigration to obtain a gratis visa on arrival.
  • Holders of Non-Residential Nepalese (NRN) cards issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Nepalese diplomatic missions abroad
  • Chinese citizens who are at least 60 years old

Please note that gratis visas are no longer accessible for US citizens. Officials from China, Brazil, Russia, and Thailand do not need Entry visas based on reciprocal visa waiver agreements.

Uploading evidence as part of your visa application

How to self-upload evidence when making an application to come to or stay in the UK.

When you make an application to come to or stay in the UK, you’ll usually be asked to provide evidence such as documents or photos. How you provide this evidence depends on how you make your application.

Who can use the self-upload service

If you use the ‘ UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to scan your identity document, you’ll use the self-upload service when you apply.

You cannot use this service if you have your fingerprints and photograph taken at a visa application centre (VAC) or UK Visa and Citizenship Services (UKVCAS) service point. You can upload documents using our commercial partner websites instead, or pay for an Added Value Service to submit your documents at your appointment at a visa application service or UKVCAS service point.

What to upload

You can check what documents you’ll need before you apply. This information is usually on the visa guide of the visa you’re applying for. There’s also a document checklist on the application form.

You’ll be asked to upload specific evidence based on the answers you provide earlier in your application. For example, a copy of your passport or birth certificate.

You may have to upload the same evidence more than once.

Prepare your documents

You can either scan your document or take a photo of it. The full document must be visible on the scan or photo.

Take a photo of your document

You can take a photo using either a smartphone camera or digital camera.

When you take your photo make sure:

  • the area you’re in is well lit
  • the document is in focus on your camera screen
  • the flash is off on your camera if you’re taking a photo of a reflective document – for example, a laminated passport page

You must save the photo as one of the following file types:

Most smartphones and digital cameras automatically save photos as one of these file types.

Give your photo file a descriptive name. For example, ‘bank statement 2019’.

If you took a photo using your smartphone and you’re completing the application form on the same phone, you should be able to upload your photo directly from your phone to the application form.

If you took a photo using your smartphone but are using another device to complete your application, you’ll need to transfer your photo to the device you’re applying on. For example, if you’re applying on a laptop, you’ll need to send the photo from your phone to your laptop. You can usually do this by:

  • emailing the photo to yourself and opening on your other device
  • using a cable to connect your phone with your other device
  • sending the image via Bluetooth

If you took a photo using a digital camera, you’ll need to transfer your photo from the camera to the device you’re applying on. You can usually do this by:

  • taking the memory card (sometimes known as an SD card) out of the camera and inserting it into a desktop computer or laptop
  • using a cable to connect your camera with your other device

Scan your document

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on your scanner to scan your document.

When you create your scan make sure:

  • the document is flat against the surface of the scanner
  • nothing is covering the information on the document

You must save the scan as one of the following file types:

Most scanners automatically save scans as one of these file types.

Give your file a descriptive name. For example, ‘bank statement 2019’.

If your scanner is connected to the device you’re completing your application form on, you should be able to upload your file directly from your device to the application form.

If you’re applying on a different device to the one your scanner is connected to, you’ll need to transfer your file to the device you’re applying on.

Upload your documents

You need to upload your documents once you reach the evidence section of the application form. Click ‘upload evidence’ next to the evidence you want to upload and then ‘choose file’ to select the file you need.

If your upload is successful, you’ll see it under the ‘Files added’ heading on the application form. You can then add more files if you need to. Repeat these steps for each type of evidence you’re asked to upload.

Check your evidence and make any changes needed before you submit it. You cannot upload any other evidence after you submit.

If you need further help

You may be able to get help through Assisted Digital if you’re unable to upload your documents if you:

  • do not feel confident using a computer or mobile device
  • do not have internet access
  • do not have access to a device like a laptop or smartphone

You must be in the UK to use this service.

Contact Assisted Digital for further advice.

For years, China has been the gift that kept on giving to global tourism, sending millions of its citizens to explore, shop and snap selfies worldwide. Now, it's telling global travelers, "Your turn!" And if visa hassles are a deal-breaker, the country knows that removing them can only sweeten the deal.

China is opening its doors even wider to the world. Australia is now the latest country to join China’s expanding visa waiver program.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang made the announcement on Monday during an official visit to Australia, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the two nations.

“We agreed to provide each other with reciprocal access to five-year multiple entry visas for tourism, business, and visiting family members to better facilitate personal exchanges. China will also include Australia in its visa waiver program,” stated Premier Qiang.

Australia’s national airline Qantas announced last month it was leaving Mainland China just six months after returning to the market. Speaking to Skift, the carrier’s International CEO said “Getting out of China at that point was the right call from our perspective.”

China has yet to detail the specifics of the new visa waiver arrangement, but the announcement closely follows a similar decision concerning New Zealand passport holders.

Just last Thursday, Premier Qiang declared visa-free entry for New Zealand citizens. “China is ready to discuss with New Zealand to introduce more measures to facilitate two-way travel,” Qiang mentioned, highlighting China’s move to ease travel restrictions.

In the past year, China has incrementally broadened its visa-free access to various countries.

China’s Visa-Free Travel Initiatives

In November, China introduced a one-year trial for visa-free travel for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. In March, China expanded this program to include Ireland, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

China initially announced the visa-free policy for a trial period until November 30 this year, but has now extended it until December 31, 2025.

With the recent additions of Australia and New Zealand, the number of nations enjoying visa-free entry to China now totals 14. Passport holders from these countries can stay in China for up to 15 days for tourism, business, family visits, or transit purposes.

China also signed a 30-day mutual visa exemption agreement with Singapore and a similar arrangement with Thailand, effective March 1, allowing visa-free visits of up to 30 days per entry. It has also eased visa requirements for U.S. citizens visiting the country on tourist visas, removing the need to provide proof of round-trip air tickets, hotel reservations, itineraries, or invitation letters.

The Chinese government has also relaxed entry regulations for tourists arriving via cruise ships. As of May 15, such visitors can stay in China visa-free for up to 15 days.

China’s Inbound Recovery Lags Behind

The initiatives are part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate China’s tourism sector, which has been struggling to regain its pre-pandemic momentum.

China’s inbound recovery has been gradual. In 2023, China welcomed 35.5 million foreign visitors, which is only about 36% of the 97.7 million recorded in 2019.

However, Chinese online travel agency Trip.com Group notes promising signs of resurgence. During the Lunar New Year in February, the group reported a tenfold increase in inbound travel bookings compared to the previous year, with significant interest from Japan, the U.S., South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, the U.K., Canada, Vietnam, Germany and Thailand.

Moreover, Trip.com Group noted that international travelers are extending their stays in China. The average duration during the Spring Festival increased to just over two days, compared to under two days the previous year. The booking window for travel to China had also expanded from six days in 2023 to 39 days in 2024.

More Inbound Boosters

To further enhance the travel experience for international tourists, China has strengthened partnerships with major payment organizations like Ant Group and Mastercard. The International Consumer Friendly Zones program in Shanghai, has been launched in collaboration with 12 overseas payment partners of Alipay+ and other major international card organizations.

It aims to make transactions smoother for global travelers.

Statistics from the first quarter of this year show a threefold increase in foreign travelers to China compared to the same period in 2023. During this time, China issued 466,000 visas and documents to foreigners, marking a 119% year-on-year increase, and nearly 1.99 million foreigners entered China visa-free, a 266% year-on-year rise.

Highlighting the economic potential of inbound tourism, Jane Sun, CEO of Trip.com Group, stated, “China’s inbound tourism has huge potential, and if it is raised to the international median of 1.5% of GDP, it could yield a growth of over RMB 1.3 trillion ($179 billion).”
