"The hometown of Lord Krishna"

Mathura tourism.

One of Hinduism's seven sacred cities, Mathura is the birthplace of the very beloved Lord Krishna. Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Mathura and Vrindavan are often considered twin cities (located only 10km away from each other). Mathura is a small town dotted with temples from various ages and attracts a horde of pilgrims from all over the world.

One side of Mathura is stretched across the Yamuna River, lined with 25 ghats, which are best visited during dawn when you can witness locals and tourists taking a holy dip, and at dawn (just after the sunset) when hundreds of diyas are floated during the daily aarti . Mathura is flooded with tourists and pilgrims during the two main festivals - Janmashtami (Lord Krishna's birthday) in August/September, and Holi in February/March. Shri Krishna Janmabhumi is the most famous tourist attraction in Mathura, as this place is believed to the be the exact place where Lord Krishna was born, and the prison where he was born is now on display for tourists to see. Mathura has many temples, both big and small, dotting the entire city, with many of these temples being dedicated to Lord Krishna. The two most important temples in town are the Dwarkadheesh Temple and the Gita Mandir. If you are looking for more than just the standard tourist fare, then the best way to explore Mathura is by taking a walk around the streets of the city. Every nook and cranny of this religious town still retains an old-world charm that belies the urbanization the city has kept up with. There is a lot of history to Mathura that you can experience only by exploring the old-fashioned architecture, the crumbling ruins of old houses, and the genial amiability of the locals who are always willing to show you around. It is not possible to think of a city as old as Mathura and imagine it not having a delicious history of street food! Don’t forget to try out local snacks like kachodis, aloo-puri and chaat, which are available at any and all eateries lining the streets. Jalebis and gulab-jamuns are also very popular local street food items that are available at all shops throughout the day.

Ever seen an idol of Krishna without his flute and peacock feather, two characteristic features we always associate with him? Head to Dwarkadhish Temple in Mathura and you can see one. What sets this 200-year-old Hindu shrine apart from the other temples of the city is that the shiny black marble idol of Lord Krishna here is depicted as Dwarkanath or the King of Dwarka, without his customary flute and peacock feather. Accompanying him is his consort, Radharani, who is carved out of white marble. One of the largest temples in Mathura, this shrine is also known for its exceptional architecture and strikingly beautiful carvings. The entrance of the temple, which is constructed in the Rajasthani style of architecture, leads to an open courtyard with magnificently carved pillars.

The best time to visit the temple is during the swing festival that is celebrated at the start of the monsoons every year. During the festival, the idol is placed on a beautifully decorated silver swing, and the entire temple is decorated with colors. It’s indeed a visual treat, but remember, the place can get a bit crowded at that time.

By Ria Gupta

places to visit in mathura

Brajbhoomi, the land where Lord Krishna was born and raised, straddles the River Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh . At its centre lie the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where his name continues to resonate and, many say, his flute still resounds in every bylane and fallen leaf. For the pious, the devout ambience of the riverbank cities is reason enough, but Mathura and Vrindavan have a lot to offer for any traveller, with delicious food, pastoral beauty and ancient legends. Here is our quick guide for 48 hours in these twin sacred cities.

Getting there

A 60km drive from Agra airport, Mathura lies four hours by road from Delhi, and a half-hour drive from Vrindavan. Those arriving by train can disembark at Mathura Junction.

The best season to visit is in early winter, when the temperature is ideal for a soak in the river as well as a trek up the hill. This year, Janmashtami falls on 6 and 7 September. During the festivities, the streets are filled with dance and processions, and temples across Braj are lit up and decorated. You can also time your visit around Hindu festivals such as Holi, when the streets of Mathura come alive with colour and cheer. In the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon nearby, Holi is a week-long celebration. Women dress up as gopis (milkmaids) and playfully drive off men with sticks, in a recreation of the way Radha and the other gopis drove off Krishna and his friends when they came to Barsana to play the festival of colour.

Apocryphal stories relate that makeup and ornaments are left here behind locked doors every night, only to be found used the next morning. Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple

Vishram ghat, mathura museum, govardhan hill, nand bhawan, chowk bazaar, kusum sarovar, dolphin water world, jama masjid mathura.

A trip to Mathura isn't complete without visiting the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple. It's one of the best temples to visit in Mathura for tourists. This temple is where Lord Krishna was born and is considered the holiest place in Mathura. It's built around the prison cell where Devaki is said to have given birth to Krishna about 5000 years ago. The temple has an interesting history. It was originally built by King Vajra who was Lord Krishna's great-grandson. However, it has been destroyed and rebuilt 17 times over the years. Today, it's one of the most popular places to visit not only in Mathura but in the entire country. Holi and Janmashtami in Mathura have the most lively celebrations that attract large crowds and are a must-see when you are on a trip to Mathura. Whether you're a believer or not, make sure to visit this sacred shrine before leaving the city.

If you ask a local about the best places to visit in Mathura, they'll likely mention Vishram Ghat. It's one of the 25 ghats along the Yamuna River and is considered the most sacred. Legend has it that Lord Krishna rested here after defeating his uncle, Kansa. Mathura is full of such legends! Vishram Ghat is made of marble and features a beautiful arch. It offers a great view of the surrounding temples. You can also take a boat ride here. If you visit in the evening during the aarti ceremony, you'll be treated to the sight of countless small oil lamps floating down the Yamuna River.

The Government Museum Mathura, originally called the Curzon Museum of Archaeology, is situated at Dampier Park. Locally, it's often referred to as the Mathura Museum. This museum is renowned in our country and holds a substantial collection of ancient artefacts, sculptures, coins, and paintings. It was established in 1874 by Sir F. S. Growse. The Government Museum of Mathura is particularly famous for housing ancient sculptures from the Mathura School, which date from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD. Additionally, the museum showcases discoveries made by well-known archaeologists in the Mathura region. Today, it stands as one of the key centres for the study, research, and preservation of Mathura's remarkable artistic heritage.

Govardhan Hill, also known as Giri Raj, is located 22 km away from Vrindavan. In the Holy Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna himself professed that the Govardhan Parvat is inseparable from him. As a result, his devotees worship the rocks of the hill just as they do his idol. This hill is composed of sandstone, stands 80 feet tall, and has a circumference of 38 km. When visiting the hill, you can explore interesting places such as Mukharvind, Mansi Ganga, and Daan Ghati.

According to history, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill with one finger during his childhood to protect the village of Mathura from fierce rainstorms and thunderstorms. This act sanctified the hill and devotees now visit it on Govardhan Puja and Guru Purnima. They show their devotion by walking barefoot for 23 km around the mountain. After saving the village, Lord Krishna instructed everyone to worship the hill which is why Govardhan Puja falls one day after Diwali. It's a tranquil and must-visit place!

Krishna was born in Mathura but spent his childhood in Gokul with his foster parents, Nand Rai and Yashoda. In Gokul, you can find many places that offer a glimpse of Krishna's early years. One significant spot is Nand Bhawan, a large mansion where Krishna and his brother Balaram grew up. It's situated on a hill, offering stunning views of the surroundings and making it a perfect spot for photography. Today, you can still visit the place where little Krishna played with his friends and where Yashoda fed him his favourite food, butter.

Kans Qila is an ancient fortress in Mathura prominently situated by the peaceful Yamuna River. It's dedicated to Kans, Lord Krishna's maternal uncle. Found near Krishna Ganga Ghat and Gau Ghat, this fort is a favourite tourist spot. It's a blend of Hindu-Muslim architecture even though it's in a state of disrepair, tourists still flock to it. This gigantic fort, also known as Purana Qila of Mathura, dates back to the Mahabharat era and boasts strong, fortified walls. It was refurbished by Raja Man Singh of Amber in the 16th century. Then, Raja Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur ordered the construction of an observatory, though there was no sign of it at the fort. The main attraction of this fortress is a brilliant mix of Hindu and Islamic styles, is the audience hall divided into three separate sections.

Do you find joy in shopping? Well, you should definitely visit Chowk Bazaar while in Mathura! There, you can pick out beautiful handicrafts, brass and wooden idols, and home décor items. Plus, you can savour delicious sweets and delicacies. This place is also known as Chatta Bazaar and is a top tourist spot in Mathura.

Kusum Sarovar

The Kusum Sarovar is a beautiful sandstone reservoir that's a true relic of the past. It's known for its flight of stairs leading down into the pond. Legend has it that the reservoir was named after one of Radha's servants - Kusum. It's a great spot for a refreshing swim in the summer. You'll also find many temples nearby when visiting Mathura and Vrindavan. The water in the pond is a stunning emerald green surrounded by a border of various colourful flowers. It's believed that Radha used to gather these flowers to create garlands and floral jewellery for herself. This place is perfect for tranquil evenings where you can enjoy watching the sunset.

Visiting Dolphin Water World in Mathura is a super fun activity. This water park spans 14 acres and is packed with exciting slides and roller coasters. It opened in 2002 and has since become a favourite spot for tourists and locals alike. The park has a special play area for kids and convenient locker rooms, and it's a fantastic place for both tourists and Mathura residents to relax and have a great time. What's cool is that the rides are suitable for all ages, so even adults can join in on the fun!

Mathura is famous for more than just its temples. The city also boasts some historic and charming mosques. Just about 1 kilometre from the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple, you'll find the Jama Masjid, a popular mosque that dates back to 1661. This mosque stands out with its four beautifully decorated minarets and captivating architecture that makes it a must-see sight. It draws not only Muslim devotees but also numerous tourists who come to admire the beauty of this remarkable monument.

If you want to go to a place where you can relax your soul, mind, and body, Mathura is the place to be. It's a serene and peaceful destination that attracts travellers from all over the world. You should definitely plan a vacation in Mathura and visit these places. Don't wait any longer and include these must-visit places in your Mathura tour package .

‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most.
