Kakarvitta to Kathmandu bus timings are roughly twice a day – the late afternoon (anywhere between 3:30pm and 6 pm) and early morning (4 am-5:30am).   The Kakarvitta to Kathmandu bus timing depends mainly on when the buses are full of people and cargo.

There is no central booking office in Kakarvitta here, there are lots of individual booking offices.  Whether you can get close to them for the sheer number of touts trying to sell you a bus ticket is another matter.

How to make a Kakarvitta to Kathmandu Bus Booking

The best way to make a booking for the bus is to find a bus that is leaving at the time you want to, pick the seats you want, pay, and get a ticket.

We were originally going to find somewhere to stay and catch a bus in the morning.  That would mean that we could “see some of the country” on the way across.  However, the persistent gloom and fog that has plagued us in Darjeeling stayed with us all down the mountain.  It’s still here in Kakarvitta.  We made a snap decision on the basis that we probably won’t see anything in daylight anyway and decided to go today.  We also checked with the FCO that there weren’t any problems to be aware of.

We found several buses plying the route to Kathmandu from Kakarvitta – they all park at the bus station – picked a bus that had seats in the middle of the bus.  We checked that they weren’t broken and that the ones in front of us weren’t broken either.  Paid.  We made sure we paid someone who other passengers were paying, not just a random stranger, and got a Kakarvitta to Kathmandu bus ticket with our seat numbers on.  Easy.

Distance between Kakarvitta and Kathmandu

The Kakarvitta to Kathmandu distance isn’t that great, but the roads are seriously bad.  The journey is 600 kilometers by road, 300 km as the crow flies, and will take us 17 hours.  That’s how long they say and that’s actually how long it takes.

Selecting a Bus Service from Kakaritta to Kathmandu

That makes it easier in picking a bus because instead of taking someone’s word that the bus is a “deluxe” bus, we get to go select the actual bus.  Deluxe means possible air con, windows that close, and reclining seats.

We pick a bus that has reclining seats. And we check that they actually recline and return, rather than just stay down.  There are no sleeper buses here.  Our bus has curtains, windows that open, and a fan by each set of two seats. We are given seats in row 9/10.  About 4 from the back.

If you want to book a bus from Kakarvitta to Kathmandu, then just approach one of the booking windows.   Or head straight out as we did.

Kakarvitta to Kathmandu MicroBus Services Options

One option, if you arrive in the morning, or if you have stayed overnight in Kakarvitta is to take the minivan option.  They only leave in the morning, the last one around 07:30.  It takes around 10 hours to get to Kathmandu.  They take a slightly different route with awesome views.  Ask around at the bus station if this is your preferred option.  The microbus service to Kathmandu from Kakarvitta takes the route Kakarvitta to Bardibas to Sindhuli to Dhulikhel to Bhaktapur to Kathmandu.

Kakarvitta to Kathmandu Taxi Fare

A taxi from Kakarbhitta to Kathmandu is possible. You can ask around at the bus station.  The Kakarbhitta to Kathmandu taxi fare will be what you can negotiate, but it will not be cheap.  If you are looking for the quickest way to go from Kakarvitta to Kathmandu then this would be to fly.  The quickest way to fly from Kakarvitta to Kathmandu is to take a taxi from Kakarvitta to Bhadrapur and then take a flight from there to Kathmandu.

Kakarvitta to Kathmandu Bus Fare

The bus service from Kakarvitta to Kathmandu bus fare in 2015 costs us 1300 Nepalese rupees each.   That is about US$13, GBP 8.70.  The price for a bus ticket from Kakarvitta to Kathmandu is between 1300-2000 NPR.  If you find a bus with A/C then you’ll pay around 1700 rupees, depending on whether you want a night bus or a day bus and on your bargaining skills.

We’re the only westerners on the bus until two Dutch guys join us about two hours into the journey.   There are relatively frequent stops, for food (we stick to packets of crisps), and drinks (hot, cold, and beer).  There are toilets too.  You do NOT want to know how gross it was, even after we completed a Nepalese trek, these were worse.

Road State Kakarvitta to Kathmandu

It gets dark pretty quickly, so it’s hard to tell the state of the roads.  I rely on how often I bounce off the seat for that.  At least my backside isn’t numb, although it probably is bruised from the bouncing.

I estimate that at least 550 of the 600 km was offroad.  And I don’t want to look at the tires on the bus we traveled on. Sometimes not knowing the answer is just best for your mental health.

Every single time we get off an overnight bus we say never again. I think they must be like childbirth because you forget just how bad it was and you do it all over again.  So it’s probably a good job we don’t have kids, we’d be up to 10 of the little darlings by now if our propensity to keep jumping on bloody overnight buses is anything to go by.

Arriving in Kathmandu from Kakarvitta

Our 17-hour labor is over and we’re here in Kathmandu.  It’s been raining.  There are huge pools of water everywhere.  And the “road” that we’re on appears to be the only road.  There are mud pools and dust everywhere else.

We walk in the direction of Thamel, the budget backpacker district.  We’re guided somewhat by the GPS in the phone, but mostly by helpful folks who’ve clearly seen it all before and who wave us generally towards Thamel.  The maps aren’t great (but you should download Maps.me) and have a sense of where you are.  People here are helpful and will send you in the right direction.  It takes us around 20 minutes with full packs on to get to the backpacker area.

In Thamel, we find our hotel, which gives us hot water, wifi, and a private bathroom.  The warmth after the chill of Darjeeling is worth every cent and the bed, well after the bus, it’s glorious and so we rest, for tomorrow we need to shop for trekking gear .

Hi Anyone Please Update me that will I Get Micro Buss or Car for Kathmandu from Kakarvitta In early Morning around 7-8 am.

Buses from Kakarvitta to Kathmandu leave at either mid afternoon (3pm ish) or EARLY in the morning – around 3am. You may be able to find a microbus, but you would have to negotiate the rates and buy all the seats! Good luck!

Hi Rhian – no, you don’t need to prebook – we did exactly the same – rocked up, found a bus and left. We had considered staying a night in Kakarvitta and travelling during the day, but decided to set off on the mid afternoon bus. Just make sure you get on the bus, when you’re picking your seat – make sure it reclines (if you like that) and that the one in front doesn’t recline onto your knees!! Good luck and enjoy Nepal! Its a nice article which i read before travelling Nepal by road Kakorvitta to katmandu. May be day time bus will be comfortable more to enjoy sight seen. in this care what is your suggession: 3-4AM Bus or 7:30 Microbus? which will be more comfortable? I am planing to trip at mid of February 2020. Please advice your best.

The weathershould be pleasant, so a day trip to see the views would be good. I think it depends on how you travel. If I were to go in the micobus, i would want to be sat near the front (not the back which could be quite bouncy, but I would also want to be in the middle of the bigger bus. I would see what seats you could get, my preference would be the 0730 microbus, but that’s because I really don’t like getting up in the middle of the night to get a bus, however, it would depend on the seat that you can get. Kakarbhitta , also spelt Kakarvitta , is a town in the Eastern Tarai region of Nepal . The town has been used by foreigners to cross between the two countries.

Visitor information

The Tourist Office (20208) is on the main road, a little past the custom office on the right hand side (Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to 17:00, Friday 10:00 to 14:00).

The closest airport is at Bhadrapur, 25 km southwest of Kakarbhitta. You can also get a flight from Kathmandu, which has a more reliable schedule, to Biratnagar, 3 hours away. Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri (90 minutes by bus/taxi) - regular flights from major Indian cities and twice weekly flights from Bangkok and Paro .

It is possible to get through tickets from travel agents in Kathmandu or Darjeeling between Kathmandu and Darjeeling. Usually this trip is very expensive compared to doing it yourself and there is no reason it to do it as it is easy to arrange everything yourself. You also can take whatever bus you want, rather than being restricting to take what is arranged for you.

Often people are ripped off by these combined bus trips and are told they are going on a first-class luxury bus and then going on inferior services.

Buses to Kakarbhitta depart from the Kathmandu Bus Terminal between 16:00 and 18:00. It is best to book them a day in advance.

To/From India The Indian border is half a kilometre east of town, and is marked by the Mechi River. Nepali immigration is open 24 hours, but you may have to look for the officials after dark. It will make it easier to get a Nepali visa if you have the correct amount in US dollars (cash). If you do not have dollars you will have to go to the bank and change your money, and if it is closed you will have to wait. The immigration office here can also issue trekking permits for eastern Nepal including for the Everest area.

The overnight buses from Kathmandu usually arrive before 10:00.

You can change money at the Nepal Rastra Bank, on the pink building (sign only in Nepali) on the left side of the road as you enter town from India. Open daily from 07:00 to 18:00. There is a money changer in the corner of the bus station.

The offices for Nepal Airlines and Everest Air (29020) are between the border and the bus stand.

The Nepalese immigration is open 07:00 to 19:00. You can get a visa at the Nepal border for US$25, which you usually have to pay in US dollars (exact change is expected). The closest Nepal consulate is in Calcutta. It is a 15-minute walk between the border and Raniganj, the first town in India.

• Mountain View Restaurant is a fairly good place.
• Hariyali Restaurant in the Hotel Rajan is one of the better places in town

As the bus stand is very noisy, it is a good idea to get a room that does not face the bus stand.

• Hotel Kathmandu (29008), on the main road, has rooms for Rs 200/250. It is not so good.
• ABC Lodge has rooms for Rs 200/250.
• Hotel Deurali has rooms with common bath for Rs 140.
• Kanchan Hotel (70015 62015), near the bus stand, has clean rooms with common bath for Rs 200, Rs 300 with bath, and Rs 500 with a TV. It is friendly and has a restaurant. Hot water in a bucket.
• Hotel Rajat (70033, 62033), a few minutes walk behind the bus stand, has rooms with common bath for US$5, room with bath, hot water and TV for $15, and a $22 for a deluxe room. You can often get a discount. It has a restaurant. It is the best place in town and is well-managed.
• Biratnagar - 3½ hr, Rs 75
• Birganj - 12 hr, Rs 225 (night bus)
• Darjeeling - Take taxi of bus to Siliguri Bus Station. There are ample shared taxis departing from there to Darjeeling.
• Kathmandu - When you cross the border from India, the bus station is on the right before the village. Buses depart to Kathmandu (16 hr, ₹350 ( Indian rupees )) usually in the early morning and between 15:00 and 18:00. It is best to reserve a bus seat a few hours early in order to get a good seat (in the front). You can reserve a night bus to Kathmandu at the booking office in front of the bus station. Direct night buses to Kathmandu and Pokhara can be painful, not only is the trip long, but you also miss the fantastic views along the
• Janakpur - A pleasant and interesting town. It is possible to break the journey to Kathmandu here (6 hr, depart 06:00 to 09:00, Rs 165)
• Pokhara - There are several buses from the border directly to Pokhara . Most are local buses, but there are a few deluxe ones, leaving at 04:30, then in the afternoon at 13:00 and 17:00. Times could change and buses get full so do get there in plenty of time. Private companies will show you the bus if asked. Price is around Rs 1200 ( Nepalese rupees ), but you can pay in Indian rupees too. (March 2017).
• Siliguri - After crossing the border, there are shared jeeps to Siliguri for Rs 35 per person. It is a 10-minute walk from Kakarbhitta to the Indian border town of Panitanki . A rickshaw is Indian Rs 6 (Rs 10 Nepali). From Panitanki there is a minibus (Rs 35 Indian per person) to Siliguri (1 hr, 35 km, ₹6). From Siliguri you can take the toy-train or bus (3½ hr, ₹50) to Darjeeling (79 km), or a bus to Gangtok or Kalimpong . You could also take a taxi to Siliguri (₹60) or Darjeeling (₹140). From New Jalpaiguri (NJP) (Siliguri), you can get a broad-gauge train to Kolkata and other places. Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri has regular flights to most major Indian cities as well twice weekly flights to Bangkok and Paro .
