Overview and History

Welcome to Paris, the City Of Lights, La Ville-Lumiere! We're going to depart from the standard timeline here and just start looking at pictures. You can put the history together in your mind along the way, or live contentedly with an abstract expression of images, whichever you prefer.

For lessons in light from the expressionist masters, blur yourself directly to the Orsay Museum and find Monet, Renoir and Cezanne waiting. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

The River Seine divides the city into two halves, called the Left Bank and Right Bank. The right bank is on the north side, left to the south. In general the right bank claims the sophistication and modern development in Paris, while the left bank has the universities, parks and historic areas.

There are two islands on the river in the middle of the city, Ile de la Cite and Ile de St. Louis . Here's a beautiful Flower Market on Ile de la City, which is the oldest section of the city. It's also home to Notre Dame cathedral

The Right Bank has a big hill called Montmartre , literally translating to "Mount Mars" or "Mountain of the Martyr", depending on which time period you take the story from. Its name dates back to at least 250A.D and it's home to the Sacre Coeur Basilica among many other things of note, such as the studios of Salvadore Dali, Picasso and Van Gogh.

And what else? The Champs-Elysees, of course! The Champs-Elysees is the most prestigious avenue in Paris. L'Arc de Triomph stands at the western end of the Champs-Elysees, at the star shaped intersection of twelve major avenues which is called Place d'Etoil. The Arch is a monument to all who fought for France, especially during the Napoleonic wars.

By the way, the sprint finish of the Tour de France -- the most prestigious bicycle race in the world -- comes down the Champs-Elysees. Catch it in the early summer.

You may have heard of a museum called Le Louvre . Before you attempt to visit it, go through some tour de france training to build up your stamina. This is a museum big enough to take your whole summer to walk through, and that's without even stopping to look at any of the art.

Situated right along the river is the Place de la Concord , the largest open square in the city. It's where Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and 2,798 of their closest friends met the guillotine during the French Revolution. The smell of blood was so strong, according to the tale, that a herd of cattle refused to cross the square.

Let's see what we have on the Left Bank. How about Les Invalides , a stately group of museums and monuments dedicated to military history, which also houses a hospital and residences for veterans.

The Left Bank has for decades been the center of academic life in Paris, which can be summed up in a word: La Sorbonne . La Sorbonne is the nickname for the University of Paris, founded in 1257. It sits in a historic scholarly sector called the Latin Quarter, which connects La Sorbonne to the Left Bank (Place Maubert). If Paris was a tropical island, this would be the coral reef.

Near La Sorbonne can be found Le Jardin de Luxembourg , where Marie d'Medici's chateau stands. It's a pleasant little country house in Florentine style. They used it for a prison during the French Revolution and for Luftwaffe headquarters during WWII. It now houses the French Senate.

Shakespeare and Co Library sits in the heart of the Latin Quarter and has earned an international reputation for being more than just a bookshop.

Getting There

Take a look at the Gare du Nord Paris North Station. One of six large train stations in Paris, it's the busiest one in Europe. If you're already on the continent, you very well may arrive here.

As for airports , there are two: Charles De Gualle and Orly. De Gaulle airport is about 25 minutes by train from Gare du Nord station, Orly is a bit closer. Here's the train information for connections to the city.

Transportation

Here's one of the 380 metro stations in Paris, the Palais-Royale at the Louvre . Looking good! This is Europe's second-largest metro system and it's connected with the buses the commuter rail network to get you around the city.

People and Culture

Beside the fact that Paris contains all walks of life, "people and culture" in Paris is synonymous with food and wine . Here we are smack in the middle of it, La Contrescarpe at Mouffetard Street.

Remember, champagne was perfected here during the Belle Epoque, and you need the proper setting in which to drink it.

And check out this fish shop !! This is what the zoom tool was made for!

In case you're wondering, there's a gritty side to Paris, too. Here's a little mobile graffiti .

In the same vein, by which I mean "cheap" or "free", stroll around Left Bank to the flea market at Place Maubert.

Street musicians are another great thing about Paris. Here are some drummers , some visual artists on the Quai de Conti , and there should be an organ grinder on the corner when you get there. Let me know if you see him.

Things to do & Recommendations

Street food -- get a croque monsieur or croque madam, it's a toasted cheese sandwich with or without ham. They're so good, it's the pizza slice of Paris! I can't for the life of me understand why nobody has shot a panorama of one.

Street food part 2, and I quote:

"the motherfucking best falafel in the world is there in the Marais. it's called La Du's and it's on the Rue de Rosiers. it's the 5th I think, right bank. If you flirt with the take out boys they'll give you more falafel too, I'm not kidding it's a fucking transcendant experience."

"there's also this bar in the 11th, called the baron rouge, where on sunday a friend of the owner drives in from normandy with a truck full of oysters and just parks it in front of the bar and sells oysters out the back and you just eat them on the street and drink Muscadet off the top of parked cars." (Thank you Allison O'Leary)

Spend a little time outdoors in the beautiful Botanical Garden , see if you can find the recycled dragon .

No trip to Paris would ever be complete without... well actually the reason Paris is Paris because you never finish seeing it all.

Move there, spend a lifetime there, walk everyplace you go and you still won't see it all. It's like New York, London or Tokyo; anyplace in such a state of constant change will remain eternally elusive.

I almost said, "no trip to Paris would be complete without going up the Eiffel Tower and seeing the view from the top ."

17 Travel Photography Tips for Taking Amazing Tour Photos

To help you in creating high-quality material out of the best moments of your tours, we’ve prepared some travel photography tips that you can check in this article.

The best way to promote your awesome tour is to make your potential customers feel the atmosphere of the experience: excitement, fun, happiness, lust for life, pride…

But how can you evoke such an atmosphere? With amazing visuals!

That means sharing videos and/or images of your guests enjoying your experience. No stock images for you!

Before listing the travel photography tips, you need to understand the importance of professional tour photos for your travel business.

  • Get to Know Why Videos Are Hot Content to Sell Tours Online

Why do you need professional images of your tours?

travel photography tips rafting experience

According to Gerald Zaltamn from Harvard Business School , around 95% of all purchasing decisions are made subconsciously .

But how to reach the subconscious mind of a customer? The answer is simple, through emotions .

This rule is especially true in the process of planning and booking a trip or experience.

You can write several pages about how great your tours are and how travelers have so much fun during them. But the description itself cannot produce big emotions. A tour photo or video can.

Why is it a bad idea to use stock images on your website or social media?

So far we have discussed only why you need visuals to promote your tours, but why you cannot use stock images for that?

As Chris Torres has pointed out in his book, Look Into Bookers , customers can tell if the image is stock . This gives the perception that your offer is also false.

Same thing for poor-quality images. They give the impression that your product is also of poor quality, or they can give a misperception of the emotions you are trying to evoke.

That’s why investing in amazing photos of your tours is utterly important for your digital marketing efforts. Make your own pro stock tour photos .

4 Travel photography tips for your setup

man setting up camera travel photography tips

The setup phase may sound boring, but it’s very important. This is something you need to do before taking your pictures, otherwise, you can miss the perfect photo.

Doing the setup means preparing your camera or phone and ensure that they are working properly.

  • 5 Essential Gadgets Every Tour Guide Should Have

These are the travel photography tips that we have for you concerning your device setup:

1. Get familiar with your device

Explore your camera or phone features and make sure that the photo quality is as great as possible.

2. Protect your equipment

Always have your camera or smartphone with you. But be careful, protect it with a good waterproof mask or dry bag.

Pelican  offers great camera cases. For your smartphone, check out  Lifeproof Nuud and Otterbox Preserver cases.

3. Give special attention to your lenses

Clean your camera lenses before every tour, just in case.

If you’re taking photos of wildlife during a tour, you need to have a camera with the longest possible zoom lens.

According to Wirecutter , the best camera lenses you can attach to an iPhone, are  Moment  mobile lines.

4. Be prepared for long ours of shooting

If you’re providing a whole-day tour, bring  external battery chargers and remember to empty your memory space.

You can automatically save the pictures from your phone to your cloud storage by activating the auto-upload function of your device.

Now check out our travel photography tips to capture the perfect moment for a tour photo.

3 Travel photography tips to capture the perfect moment

man feeding llama travel photography tips

To capture the best tour photos you need to be in the right place at the right time.

Considering that you know well the route of your tour, you need to think in advance about the best places and landscapes for taking a good travel picture.

You also need to be alert in order to detect the perfect moment that can evoke most emotions and determine when is the best light for shooting.

Each type of tour has an emotion that you want to evoke. That is the emotion your guest is looking for when booking with you.

These are the travel photography tips to capture the perfect moment:

1. Shoot the best scenarios of your tour

peruvian woman farm

No one knows better your area than you.

Think in advance which places are the most beautiful to capture on a photo, and take a picture of them while you’re alone and on a tour. This way you have two perspectives to use on different occasions.

Try to take photos that capture the unique background of your tours. If you offer trekking tours, take amazing pictures of the mountains, waterfalls, buildings or any other element that will excite tourists during the tour.

For safari tours, photos of the wildlife to show the glory of the wilderness. For relaxing tours, capture the sea horizon. Bike tour photos can show the buzz of urban life.

Make the viewer feels as if he or she is there. When not shooting your travelers, try to capture local people in traditional clothes, local vehicles or local food to depict a destination.

2. Show the emotion of your guests

young friends on thrilling roller coaster ride

Photograph your travelers in the most memorable situations. Do not take boring photos of your travelers in front of some attraction.

While they are on a tour, they are experiencing much more than just seeing new landscapes. They are creating a bond with their friends, family, and the people around them, overcoming fear or accomplishing a personal goal.

With experience, you will know how people will react at every moment of your tour. Try to picture the peak of a traveler’s excitement and they will share the picture of that special moment on their social media profiles.

This travel photography tip is basic, yet frequently skipped by amateur photographers.

3. Get to know the right timing

professional camera stand on tripod

For shooting landscapes, lighting is crucial and the best light is 1 – 2 hours after sunrise and before sunset. If you’re guiding a morning and/or an evening tour, that’s the best time for shooting.

During the day, the ideal position is when the sun is behind you and your subject is in front of you. If you’re holding tours during the midday when the sun is high up, it’s better to go indoors.

Take photos of your travelers inside museums, cafes, markets, or restaurants while they eat traditional food.

10 Travel photography tips on how to take good travel pictures

young man rope jumping in rapid waters of a river travel photography-tips

The story behind your pictures plays an important role in bringing up emotions in your potential customers. But all the effort can be useless if the quality of the images is not top-notch.

There are some techniques that professional photographers use to take the best photo possible. Using them will make your images more interesting and appealing.

These are our travel photography tips to help you take the best quality images of your tours:

1. Always hold the phone horizontally with both hands

woman takes a picture with a smartphone

Be still or use a tripod to prevent shaking. If you are using a smartphone,  Glif is a good choice for a tripod.

2. Use the rule of thirds for the best composition

man holding camera

When you look through your screen, imagine three horizontal and vertical lines that are crossing and giving 9 rectangles. The subject you shot should be placed where the lines intersect. You can use grids on your phone. If you’re taking a picture of a person, the focus should be on his/her eyes.

3. Adjust the ISO for low ambient light

back view of woman with backpack taking picture travel photography tips

If you’re taking pictures at night, the ISO (camera’s level of sensitivity to light) needs to be higher, for example, 3200 or more.

4. Use the focus of your camera

yellow flowers with blurry mountain background

Play with focus effects with blurry foregrounds or backgrounds. If you’re using a phone, download the Camera+ app and use its clarity filter.

5. Don’t zoom, crop

image being cropped

It’s better to move closer to your subject or taking the photo from the distance and crop it later. By zooming you lose image quality.

6. Contrast the foreground with the background

car and mountains travel photography tips

A good photo idea is to position an object in the foreground that highlights the landscape in the background. For example, a house, a rock, an animal, or even better, a human in front of a mountain. This line up gives a great perspective.

7. Use the scenario to frame your subject

corona arch utah

This travel photography tip is very simple. When taking a picture, have your guests framed by the vegetation, e.g. branches and trees, or frame them with doors and windows.

8. Be creative on your pictures

man next camel

When you’re shooting an attraction, try not to be obvious . You can take the picture from different angles, e.g. from a low angle or from above. Use water surfaces, mirrors, sunglasses, or metallic surfaces to shoot the reflection of the scene. Create a sense of depth with pictures of roads , train tracks, and paths through the woods.

9. Capture the motion of the moment

surfer on a wave travel photography tips

If you want to freeze the movement of some action (surfing, running, traffic, crowd, etc.), you can do that with the burst mode of your phone. If you have a professional camera, use the fast shutter mode. Alternatively, you can capture the motion of the action by using a longer shutter speed. If you have an iPhone, a good app for that is the  Slow Shutter Cam .

10. Be simple

woman standing salar

Use the empty space in your favor, such as the sky, sea, walls and so on. That emphasizes your subject and helps to evoke the emotions of your viewers.

If you follow the travel photography tips described in this article, the chances are high that you will have amazing visuals of your tours that will help a lot with your marketing.

Post the tour photos on your website, blog, and on every social media that you are present in. Describe them properly, use the right hashtags, and include backlinks leading to your booking page .

Don’t forget to send the photos to your travelers. Also, tag them on social media to generate engagement.

If you liked those tips you should join our LinkedIn group . There you can find valuable content for tour operators to grow their business online.

How to organize listing photos into a home tour

Two pairs of boots sit in an entryway with a narrow door that opens onto a brick path.

You can turn your listing’s photo gallery into a virtual tour that’s organized by room

Make sure your current images highlight your space in detail, then assign each to the correct area of your property

Update your listing to use this feature

Select, browse, book. That’s what you want every traveler to do when your listing shows up in their search results, right? You can often influence their decision to stay with you—or keep on scrolling—with the images you provide of your space.

Beyond spending some time taking great listing photos and choosing the best ones to share, what can you do to entice visitors? Try turning your gallery of photos into an organized virtual tour.

Create a guest-friendly photo gallery

Your photo gallery consists of all the images you’ve uploaded to your listing. On smaller screens, such as smartphones, guests can check out your photo gallery by tapping your cover image , which stands alone at the top of your listing page.

On larger screens, such as tablets and laptops, a 5-photo grid replaces the single cover image, giving guests a better sense of what makes your place interesting. They can select any of the images to browse the rest of your gallery, displayed in a larger, vertical grid.

You can organize this larger grid by room or area of your space. Think of it as giving guests a virtual tour—an opportunity to peruse every corner of your space before booking.

Start by making sure you’re offering clear, well-lit images of every room and area of your place that’s available to guests. Superhost Sarah of Sayulita, Mexico, suggests including “at least 2 photos of each bedroom, from different angles, so guests can see if there is a closet, desk, or whatever is there.”

Next, if you haven’t already, add a few photos of special amenities or other details. These could include a well-stocked kitchen, an office with a door, or a fully equipped children’s playroom.

Photos of accessibility features , such as a step-free entrance or wide doorways, can provide important information too. Guests typically want to see what makes your space unique—and a great place to stay.

Organize your photo gallery by room or area

Once you’re happy with your photo gallery, you can organize it into a virtual tour. Update your listing with these two simple steps:

  • Under listing details, select Property and rooms , then scroll down to edit Rooms and spaces.
  • A list of the areas or rooms your guests can use appears. (To add or remove rooms, go to Edit rooms and spaces .) Choose a room on the list, select the Add photos button, and select the pictures of this room that are in your photo gallery. Repeat the same process for each room.

Sorting every picture in your photo gallery by specific room or area helps create an inviting tour that’s easy for guests to follow. It’s OK if you have a few outliers, which automatically go in the Additional Photos section at the end of the tour—just make sure these images really don’t belong with any others to avoid confusion.

After you update your listing, your gallery is organized by room or area. Guests get a property overview that allows them to explore each area, or they can scroll through the whole tour. The tour typically starts in the living room, then moves to the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, outside areas, and any additional spaces you have in your listing.

It’s important to note that organizing your photo gallery by room or area won’t affect the cover photo or the 5-photo grid at the top of your listing. Doing so is just another way you can help give curious guests the information and confidence they need to book a stay with you.

what to do in Tours, France

What To Do in Tours, France (Guide + Map)

  • December 26, 2023

Located just an hour away by train from Paris, Tours is often used as a base for visiting the chateaux of Loire Valley. It is one of the largest cities in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France, well connected by public transport to the most famous castles in the area. Indeed, from here, you can easily reach the historic palaces of Chenonceau, Chambord, Blois and Amboise.

Once the capital of France, today Tours is a lively city boasting a beautiful historic centre with half-timbered houses and gourmet bistros. A perfect stop on your way through the Loire Valley!

What to do in Tours, France in one day

Thanks to its central location and excellent public transport connections to the nearby towns, Tours is a great base to discover the chateaux of Loire. This is one of the main cities I’d recommend you to base yourself in, especially if you’re travelling by train.

Besides being an excellent base for touring the historic chateaux, Tours itself is worth at least half a day of exploring. Take a walk along the narrow cobbled streets while admiring the half-timbered houses, the impressive Saint-Gatien Cathedral and the Renaissance Hotel Gouïn.

Follow my itinerary to discover the best things to do in Tours, France for one day. You’ll also find what are the most famous chateaux to visit near the city and some restaurant recommendations.

At the end of the blog post, you can find a map of this itinerary (with all attractions and restaurants’ websites).

What to do in Tours in one day

Breakfast at l’atelier du talemelier.

  • Visit Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours

Tour de l’Horloge and Tour de Charlemagne

  • Have a cup of coffee at Place Plumereau
  • Admire Hôtel Goüin

Lunch at Les Gens Heureux

  • Visit Saint-Gatien Cathedral

Hôtel de Ville de Tours

  • Admire the art at Musée des Beaux-Arts
  • Take a walk in the Botanical Garden
  • Visit the quirky Musée de Compagnonnage

09:00 AM – 10:00 AM Start your one day in Tours with breakfast at L’Atelier du Talemelier or Kat’s Coffee . L’Atelier du Talemelier is a great bakery which offers quality pastries and sandwiches. However, if you prefer to enjoy some delicious cakes with your coffee, head to Kat’s Coffee.

L'Atelier du Talemelier

Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours

10:00 AM – 10:25 AM Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours (Basilica of St. Martin) is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, the third bishop of Tours. It was built over the traditional burial site of the saint in the 5th century AD. During the centuries, the small basilica was replaced several times with larger structures.

The basilica in a Neo-byzantine style that you see today dates from the 19th century. However, you can still see some of the remains of the older Romanesque edifice – the western clock tower and Tour de Charlemagne (Charlemagne Tower). They are located just a few steps away from the current church.

Inside the crypt, you’ll find the tomb of Saint Martin.

Basilica of St. Martin

10:30 AM – 10:45 AM Tour de l’Horloge (Clock Tower) and Tour de Charlemagne are the only remnants of the impressive structure of the 11th-century Romanesque Basilica of Saint Martin.

Tour de Charlemagne was built on the site of the tomb of Luitgard, the last wife of Charlemagne. The king was so greatly affected by her death in 800, that he decided that Luitgard would be buried in the Basilica of Saint Martin. In the 19th century, the Charlemagne Tower was converted into a water tower.

Although, it’s not possible to visit the towers, take a few moments and admire their structure. Just imagine the grandeur of the 11th-century Romanesque basilica, of which these towers were part!

Tour de l'Horloge

Place Plumereau

10:50 AM – 11:05 AM Place Plumereau is the heart of the historic centre of Tours. It is a lively square with bars and restaurants, framed by charming 15th-century half-timbered houses. A popular place to sit and watch the world go by!

The square is named in honour of Charles Plumereau, a municipal councillor of Tours, who bequeathed 3000 francs to the city.

Place Plumereau

Hôtel Goüin

11:15 AM – 11:30 AM This Renaissance palace served as a private mansion of a family of silk merchants in the 15th century. The façade with its beautiful arches is a real masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. So don’t miss to take a quick look and admire the exterior!

Hôtel Goüin is named after a family of Breton bankers who purchased the building in 1738. And don’t be fooled by the word hotel, this is not an actual hotel, but a museum for temporary art exhibitions.

Hôtel Goüin

12:00 PM – 02:00 PM For lunch head to Les Gens Heureux . This typical French restaurant offers a small selection of interesting dishes with a unique combination of flavours.

Les Gens Heureux

Saint-Gatien Cathedral

02:00 PM – 02:30 PM Tours Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Gatien) is dedicated to the first bishop of Tours – Saint Gatianus. Built between 1170 and 1547, it reflects the development of the Gothic style of architecture. Some of the cathedral’s highlights include the spectacular 13th-14th century stained glass windows and an Italian-style organ.

The cathedral houses the tombs of the children of Anne de Bretagne and Charles VII. Also, you’ll find a chapel dedicated to Joan of Arc. She had met with Charles VII here in Tours, an important meeting which became a turning point in the Hundred Years’ War.

Saint-Gatien Cathedral

02:45 PM – 03:00 PM The last stop of this Tours itinerary is the town hall, Hôtel de Ville de Tours. Take your time and enjoy its magnificent Renaissance Revival façade.

The town hall was built between 1896 and 1904 by the famous architect Victor Laloux. It is the same architect who designed the Orsay museum in Paris!

Hôtel de Ville de Tours

Dinner at La Maison des Halles

Finish your one day in Tours with dinner at La Maison des Halles . The wine list here is great and the menu is excellent (don’t miss the desserts – the best I’ve had during a week in France).

La Maison des Halles

Museum of fine arts.

The Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts) is housed in the former bishop’s palace. The museum owns a remarkable collection of Italian Primitives from the 14th-15th centuries. Among them are two renaissance paintings by Andrea Mantegna, considered masterpieces. You’ll also find many artworks by Delacroix, Degas, Monet, Rembrandt, Rubens and Rodin.

Don’t miss the staggering cedar tree at the museum entrance, which is over 200 years old!

Castle of Tours

Close to the cathedral, you’ll find the Castle of Tours (Château de Tours). Built in the 11th century, this small chateau served as a residence of the Carolingian dynasty. Today, it houses contemporary exhibitions of paintings and photographs .

Castle of Tours

Church of Saint Julien

The Church of Saint Julien (Église Saint-Julien de Tours) is a part of a former Benedictine abbey founded in the 6th century. Most of the church is in Romanesque style and dates back to the 13th century.

Church of Saint Julien

Tours Botanical Garden

Founded in 1843, the Botanical Garden (Jardin Botanique de Tours) is the oldest city park. It’s a lovely area with lots of wildlife and thematic gardens – greenhouses, orchards, medical gardens, arboretums and many others. There is also a petting zoo with farm animals like donkeys, sheep, rabbits and poultry!

Musée de Compagnonnage

Musée de Compagnonnage occupies the dormitory at the former Abbey of Saint-Julien. This quirky museum is dedicated to the city’s trade guilds. The exhibition represents various objects related to metalwork, tailoring, culinary, shoemaking and woodcarving.

Where to stay in Tours, France

If you intend to use Tours as a base to explore the Loire castles, take a look at my recommendations below on where to stay. You’ll find most of the historic attractions and restaurants in the area between the Loire River and the Central Railway station. So, I’d advise you to look for accommodations in this area, because you’ll be within walking distance of everything.

Bianca censori goes nearly naked in public once again, bianca censori flashes a whole lotta skin in one-piece bathing suit.

Bianca Censori was back at it Saturday ... showing off her incredible figure while wearing practically nothing, which should come as no surprise to anyone at this point.

Yup, there was Bianca rocking a teenie weenie white swimsuit in Prato, Italy -- and the photogs couldn't get enough of her, snapping a slew of images as she trailed her hubby Kanye West into a building.

Check out the pictures obtained by TMZ ... Bianca looked absolutely stunning while flashing a lot of skin in her little one-piece that left nothing to the imagination. Her breasts, rear end and most of her body were completely exposed.

She also flaunted her customary slicked-back black hair while sporting tan heels and gripping some design sketches in one hand.

We don't know exactly what the sketches were for ... but Kanye has operated his Yeezy clothing line in Prato, which is also known as a fashion hub.

Of course, this wasn't the first time Bianca walked around basically in the buff -- and it certainly won't be the last.

For a while now, Bianca has regularly gone out in public dressed in her scantily clad outfits , turning heads everywhere around the world. And Kanye doesn't have a problem with it at all. In fact, he seems to be in full support since he's usually right there beside Bianca during her nearly naked outings.
