European Cruises from Boston

A European cruise is a “once in a lifetime” chance to experience a classic transatlantic journey, promising great memories of spectacular places - the wild beauty of Newfoundland - the unspoiled arctic landscape of Greenland - the volcanic coast of Iceland - the fiords and quaint coastal towns of Norway. Transatlantic cruises to Europe are a great way to connect to the golden age of cruising where such voyages became prestigious social events complete with dancing, drinking, and plenty of famous faces. Embarking on such a voyage today lets you experience the timeless quality of a transatlantic cruise with all the creature comforts you can wish for.

From Boston there is a classic and much loved Holland America Cruise with the 35 and 17 Night Voyage of the Vikings. Cruises from Boston to Europe

  • Cruises from Boston

If you're interested in cruises from Boston to Europe, you'll find only one . . . but it's the European cruise of a lifetime.

Once a year, beginning in July, a luxury cruise liner from Holland America's top-of-the-line fleet (usually the Rotterdam or Veendam) embarks on a very special Transatlantic "Voyage of the Vikings" cruise from Boston to Europe, and then back to Boston.

What makes this Boston-to-Europe cruise special is that it follows the path that Viking ships may have taken on their expeditions to the New World hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus made his 1492 voyage.

Unlike the Vikings, you'll be traveling on the equivalent of a floating luxury hotel, dining on wonderful cuisine , and enjoying plenty of entertainment and recreation.

As you can see, you'll make lots of Port of Call stops on your way to Europe, with different destinations on the return back to Boston.

Typical route: Boston to Europe Cruise on Holland America

Sign on for fascinating shore excursions, or explore on your own - the choice is yours.

What to Expect of Your Cruise to Europe:  Port of Call Destinations

Whether you choose to cruise from Boston to Europe, Europe to Boston, or do a round trip voyage, you'll see and visit an exciting mix of major cities, villages, and scenic locations along the New England coast, several Canadian provinces including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Labrador, Iceland, Greenland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, and The Netherlands.

Here are a few close-ups of what you may see:

Reykjavik, Iceland - Photo credit: iStock/HannamariaH

Although Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland, it is relaxed and laid back compared with other European capitals, despite its reputation for an exciting nightlife.

Located almost at the edge of the Arctic Circle, the city enjoys almost non-stop light throughout most of the night during the summer, so the Path of the Vikings cruise arrives at the perfect time for enjoying the sunlight.

The combination of mountains and water make every Reykjavik view a gorgeous one.  You'll enjoy walking around the compact city, sampling the shops and perhaps a cafe or pub as well.  Since you'll be there overnight, you can experience the nightlife if you're so inclined.

Your cruise may also make a Port of Call at one of Iceland's smaller villages such as Djupivogur, where you'll get a glimpse of a whole different way of life.  Traders set up camp in Djupivogur as early as 1589.  You can visit an 18th century house, now a museum, or enjoy nature walks, boat trips, and breath-taking scenery.   Mount Bulandstindur, believed to have mystical powers, dominates the landscape.

The Netherlands

Amsterdam or Rotterdam may be the European destination of your Voyage of the Vikings cruise.  Both cities, located about 30 miles apart, feature beautiful canals, historic sections filled with mellow brick and stone buildings, numerous museums, bookstores, bicycles, and cafes, and are among the most charming cities in Europe.

Amsterdam's most famous museum is Rijksmuseum , where you should head straight for the Rembrandts, and the Van Gogh Museum runs a close second.  Flower lovers should visit Bloemenmarkt, the world's only floating flower market where several houseboats display stunning tulips. Save an hour at the end of the day for a canal cruise - the best way to see this water-laced city.

Rotterdam's "must-see" attractions include vintage ships at the Maritime Museum, 360-degree views from atop the Euromast building (the tallest in Rotterdam), and soaring modern architecture in sections of the city destroyed by German Nazi bombs during World War II.  Visit the 17th century Delfshaven neighborhood to enjoy canal-side boutiques and visit the "Pilgrim Father's Church," departure point for English Separatists who sailed to America on the Mayflower  in 1620.

Fall Foliage cruise from Boston

With soaring mountains, brilliant blue skies, and gorgeous fjords, Norway is a country you'll enjoy for the scenery alone.

As an added plus, though, you may have a Port of Call in Bergen, founded in 1070 and the second largest city in Norway.

Bergen is located on the western coast amid seven mountains but thanks to the Gulf Stream, it is relatively warm and rainy.

Weather should be pleasant, although perhaps wet, during your cruise from Boston to Europe.

You can explore the wharf area, the many museums surrounding an ornamental lake near the wharf, and art galleries, all an easy walk from the cruiseport in this picturesque small city.

Bergen is also home to renowned musical groups ranging from the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra to rock groups dubbed the "Bergen Wave," along with numerous bands and marching groups.

How to Find Deals & Discounts on Cruises from Boston

Cruises already give you a great deal - the cost per day (or night) is usually MUCH less than you'd spend on a hotel . . . plus you get meals, entertainment, spectacular scenery, and the chance to visit lots of interesting places.

But cruise deals and discounts make this picture even more interesting!

You'll typically get the best cheap cruise deals if you book early (4-6 months before departure) or late (few weeks before departure), but you can almost always find great deals and discounts at almost any time if you know where to look.

The easiest place to find the best cruise deals, discounts, and specials all in one place is on Expedia's Top Deals page (click on Cruises).   They show you the best savings on each Cruise Line.

Why You'll Enjoy Cruising to Europe Aboard Holland American's Rotterdam & Veendam

Fall Foliage cruise from Boston

Holland America is considered a 5-star, top luxury cruise line.   When you experience the white-glove service and splendid amenities on the elegant Rotterdam and Veendam, you'll understand why.

The crew makes sure that your on-board experience during the cruise from Boston to Europe is as close to perfect as possible.

In the formal and casual dining areas, you'll enjoy an extensive list of excellent wines , gourmet cuisine, and elegant table linens, crystal, and china.

Formal nights give you the chance to get dressed up; casual dining options mean you don't have to if this is not your thing!

Excellent recreational facilities, top-flight entertainment, and enrichment opportunities such as digital photography and cooking classes ensure that you'll have plenty to do on your days at sea.  Welcoming common areas give you lots of places to hang out, socialize, and relax.

Even the regular staterooms provide more space than on most other cruise ships.  And suites are roomier than many Boston apartments.

What to Pack for Your Cruise from Boston to Europe

Although the Voyage of the Vikings cruise occurs in July and August, you'll visit places that range from hot and humid to chilly and windy.

Plus, you might encounter rain at almost any of the Ports of Call at this time of the year, including Boston.

This wide range of climate conditions poses packing challenges.

Your best strategy is to bring items to layer , such as sweaters and jackets, that you can put on or take off as needed.  A waterproof jacket and hat or umbrella can be a plus.

Insect repellent may be useful if you're exploring along the Canadian coast and encounter the scourge of our late-summer months: black flies.  Pack sunscreen and sunblock too.

Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes, as well as thick socks to provide cushioning.  Some of the places you'll visit (including Boston) have cobblestone streets.

Remember to pack at least one dressier outfit for the ship's formal nights.  Guys, a jacket and tie will be fine.  Gals, this is your chance to dress up if you want . . . otherwise, just pack something black along with a nice scarf or pashmina shawl.

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet).

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Introduced in 2011 and fully refurbished in February 2020, the 2,902-passenger Celebrity Silhouette is one of the largest ships in the fleet and features a nearly 1-to-3 crew-to-guest ratio. Its latest renovation reimagined the lounges across the ships, updated the staterooms and added new boutiques and spa treatment rooms.

Silhouette offers plenty of onboard activities, from enrichment seminars to comedy shows. While kids can play on Xbox consoles or at the sports courts, adults can sip libations at the Passport Bar and Craft Social.

As far as dining goes, the ship is home to 12 restaurants and cafes, half of which are specialty venues that require reservations and extra fees. Cuisine ranges from casual bites at the pool grill to sushi and Italian fare.

Along with a variety of food options, Celebrity Silhouette offers a range of stateroom selections, with 85% of its cabins offering verandas. The 2,376-passenger Norwegian Jewel (the namesake of the line's Jewel-class ships) has been cruising since 2005 and and underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2022. It reemerged boasting more than 25 refreshed venues. With its low 1-to-2 crew-to-guest ratio, the ship makes tailored experiences a priority.

With 14 eateries and 12 bars and lounges, every guest has plenty of elbow room. Passenger favorites include the specialty Brazilian steakhouse.

While Jewel appeals to a variety of traveler types, it's especially well-suited for families thanks to its age-appropriate kids clubs, a video arcade and waterslides. But there are plenty of diversions to keep grown-ups occupied as well, such as a full-service spa, a casino, sports facilities and an art nouveau-style theater.

As for lodging, cruisers can choose between Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Club Balcony Suite and Suite category cabins. Those looking for even more space and luxury should opt for a cabin in The Haven, which offers multiple bedrooms and access to a private sun deck.

The 670-passenger Oceania Insignia, which was dramatically redesigned in December 2018, maintains a nearly a 1-to-2 crew-to-passenger ratio, which means staff members can provide personalized attention to guests. The ship's last major refurbishment was in 2013, but it received some Oasis-class updates in April 2018 (plus new furniture and fresh carpeting). Brilliance of the Seas offers eight restaurants, including five specialty options. The ship also provides entertainment for the whole family, including poolside movies, a three-story theater, a rock climbing wall and a mini-golf course. While adults grab a cocktail at one of the bars, kids and teens can enjoy age-appropriate youth clubs.

As far as lodging goes, about 75% of the ship's cabins offer ocean views (and about half of those come with balconies). The most budget-friendly cabins are Interior staterooms (170 square feet). All include amenities like flat-screen TVs and minifridges.

Brilliance of the Seas departs from ports throughout North America and Australia for a variety of sailings around the world.

Silver Shadow

Silver Shadow is slightly larger than the older Silversea ships, but not as big as the  Silver Spirit . Last refurbished in 2019 (and debuted in 2000), the 392-passenger ship maintains a nearly 1-to-1 staff-to-guest ratio, with 302 crew members. For past cruisers, it was the friendly crew's attention to detail that helped set Silver Shadow apart from its competitors.

Recent passengers praise the all-suite accommodations, which range from the Vista Suite (287 square feet) to the two-bedroom Grand Suite (1,435 square feet). All cabins offer ocean views and more than 80% include private balconies. Standard amenities include butler service, minifridges and full baths with separate showers.

When guests aren't in their rooms, they can utilize the ship's facilities, which include shopping boutiques, a casino, a beauty salon and an expansive pool deck. The ship also offers four dining venues, including La Dame, a specialty French restaurant with an additional reservation fee. As for nighttime entertainment, passengers have their pick between several cocktail lounges and the ship's performance venue.

Silver Shadow sails throughout North America, South America, Australia, Asia and more. It also completes some transoceanic voyages.

Top Sights & Attractions for Cruises from Boston

Freedom trail.

For those who want to learn more about American history while in Boston, you can’t miss a walk along the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is easy to spot, as it’s a 2.5-mile walk through the city of Boston that is marked by a red line. Top sites along the trail include Boston Common, Bunker Hill Monument, Old North Church, Massachusetts State Park, Old South Meeting House, the Paul Revere House, and many more. Along the way you’ll learn how these sites had significance to the American Revolution and which ones were frequented by former U.S. Presidents and political influencers.

Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill is a historic and affluent area of Boston that is home to beautiful Victorian brick homes covered in ivy and adorned with picturesque flower boxes. At night, the area comes alive with people descending onto the neighborhood to walk down its cobblestone streets and eat at one of the prestigious restaurants located in the neighborhood. The Massachusetts State House is also located in Beacon Hill.

The North End is the oldest residential neighborhood in Boston and is also the city’s “Little Italy” neighborhood, as it’s home to a variety of Italian restaurants and delis. For dessert, Mike’s Pastry is famous for its Italian cannoli; you’ll often have to wait in a line out the door to try it, but most people will tell you it’s worth the wait. The North End is where many of the most popular sites along the Freedom Trail are located, including Paul Revere’s House, which is also the oldest building in downtown Boston.

Boston Common

The Boston Common is located at one end of the Freedom Trail and is where many visitors start the walk due to its scenic location. Boston Common covers 50 acres and is the oldest park in Boston. It’s a great place to walk around and see the ponds that are home to ducks and swans, and the many monuments located on its premises. From a historical standpoint, Boston Common is important because it played a part in the American Revolution as it was where British Troops gathered for a time and served as a campground and artillery base.

Prudential Center Skywalk Observatory Tours

The Prudential Center Skywalk Observatory is located on the 50th floor of the building and provides 360-degree views of Boston. It’s the highest observation deck in Boston that’s open to the public and you can also rent an audio tour headset to learn more about the main parts of the city you can see from the Skywalk Observatory.

Fenway Park

Fenway Park is probably Boston’s most cherished landmark for sports fans, and is a must-see for most visitors to Boston. It’s a stadium where the Boston Red Sox play and is the oldest ballpark for Major League Baseball. Even if you’re not a huge baseball fan, you can still appreciate the design, which has a uniquely shaped field and a massive wall alongside left field dubbed the Green Monster.

Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary

The underwater plateau that makes up Stellwagen Bank is rich in nutrients, making it a prime place for migrating whales to stop and feed. That also makes it the place to head for visitors to Boston who want to do some whale watching off the coast. During the summer months, you have the chance to see humpback whales making their way through the area. You also might see one of the 100+ other animals that call the 842-square-mile area of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary home.

See Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum

One of Boston’s defining moments in history is the Boston Tea Party, and you can learn about that event in an interactive and fun way at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum. You’ll be escorted on a 1-hour tour through the facility by a guide dressed in 18th century garb. During the tour you’ll get to participate in reenactments like a city hall meeting as well as tour a ship fully rebuilt to reflect the ship that was ransacked during the Boston Tea Party. You’ll also get to help reenact the tea being thrown overboard while seeing the ship.

Visit the New England Aquarium

The New England Aquarium is a family-friendly attraction in Boston that has thousands of sea creatures you can see. It’s located on the Central Wharf of Boston and overlooks Boston’s harbor. Popular animals to see at the aquarium include penguins, sea turtles, northern fur seals, and the giant Pacific octopus.

Over 400,000 pieces line the walls and floors of the Museum of Fine Arts, ranging from ancient sculptures to contemporary paintings.

Where can I eat near the Boston cruise port?

Fresh Lobster at Legal Sea Foods: Legal Sea Foods is a Boston institution and one of the top things to try while there is the lobster. Legal Sea Foods is located on the waterfront of Long Wharf and offers views with your meal. Besides lobster, there is a variety of other seafood including clam chowder, wood-grilled fish, and raw oysters.

Beers at Cheers: Another institution in Boston is the Cheers Bar. For fans of the Cheers TV show, this is a can’t-miss dining experience in Boston since you can eat in the bar and restaurant where the exterior shots of Cheers were filmed. The Cheers Bar is located in Beacon Hill and has a menu featuring items that play on the names of characters in the show, like the Giant Norm Burger or Frasier's Chicken Panini.

Italian Dining in Little Italy: The Italian cuisine in Boston’s North End is delicious and prevalent. It ranges from casual brick-oven pizza to upscale lobster ravioli to traditionally prepared tiramisu and more Italian delicacies.

An Irish Pint

Boston has a strong Irish heritage that extends to a plethora of Irish pubs. Head to one for a pint of Guinness and live Irish music. You can often find traditional Irish fare served alongside fresh seafood at many of the Irish pubs in Boston.

Quincy Hall snacking

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is home to over 17 restaurants along with the popular Quincy Market Hall Colonnade, a long hall where you can sample over 30 food merchants serving up East Coast and international cuisine.

What’s the culture and history of Boston?

Boston is an important part of the history of the United States of America. The city was originally founded in the first half of the 17th century by Puritans who immigrated to the New World from England.

Over the next century and a half, it would grow in size as more people moved there from overseas and other British colonies. During that time, it would also become a hotbed for strife between the colonies and England, with the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre becoming defining moments in the conflict between patriots and loyalists that led to the American Revolutionary War.

Today, Boston is defined by its museums and sites showcasing this history as well as the high caliber universities that result in many new grads putting down roots in Boston. Residents are known for their Irish and Italian heritage, devotion to the city’s sports team, and thick Boston accents.

Where can I go shopping near the Boston cruise port?

Boston has no shortage of places to shop, whether you’re looking for crafts, kitschy souvenirs, or national chains. For all three, visit Faneuil Hall Marketplace, home to the aforementioned Quincy Market and plenty of shops. For department stores and traditional malls, Boston’s Back Bay is the place to go, with indoor malls found at Prudential Center and the Copley Place Mall.

How can I get around Boston?

Boston’s subway system is referred to as the “T” and has an extensive route system that consists of an underground metro and buses that operate along cables. The routes operated by the T go all over the city center into Cambridge and other suburbs of Boston. A water shuttle or water taxi can easily take you from the cruise terminal to Boston’s points of interest along the harbor, such as Faneuil Marketplace, Bunker Hill, the USS Constitution, or the North End. Taxi stands are located throughout the city, although you may have to wait for a bit depending on the time of day and location.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The currency used in Boston is the U.S. Dollar, and you’ll be able to find ATMs dispensing cash all over Boston. Tipping is very common, especially in restaurants, bars, and taxis. A common tip for restaurants, taxis, and most other services is 15% to 20% of the total amount.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise.

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

Cheap Europe Cruises - Cruises to Europe

Featured europe cruise deals, cruising guide, why cruise to europe.

Cruisers can visit multiple cities -- often multiple countries -- in one weeklong to two-week trip, so they can hit the highlights and only pay airfare once. Instead of logging long hours traveling in a bus, navigating train schedules in a foreign language or moving from hotel to hotel, cruise passengers can enjoy fine dining, complimentary entertainment and one comfortable home base for the entire trip as the ship sails from Spain to France to Italy in the Mediterranean, or from Germany to Denmark to Sweden in Northern Europe, not to mention farther north into Norway.

What are Popular Activities in Europe?

Activities vary depending on where you go. Cultural and historical attractions are present nearly everywhere -- whether that's exploring Roman ruins, visiting famous art museums or touring castles, fortresses and historic homes. Beautiful cathedrals and religious sites are plentiful. Tasty food and wine tours are educational and available throughout all of Europe.

When is a Good Time to Cruise to Europe?

While there are some European cruises year-round, spring, summer and fall are the major times to go. Summertime is the primary time that Baltic and Arctic cruises are offered to destinations in Northern Europe.

The best times to go on a Europe river cruise are often spring and fall, when temperatures are pleasant and crowds somewhat diminished. Travelers looking for a unique spin on a river cruise can opt for a late fall sailing to visit Europe's famous Christmas Markets -- just be prepared for cool weather.

What are Popular Ports in Europe?

Baltic ports include Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki, while Norwegian fjords sailings call at Geiranger, Bergen and Flam. Western Europe ports include Dublin, Liverpool and Glasgow.

Rhine River cruises visit Amsterdam (via canal), Cologne, Strasbourg and Basel. Popular ports on the Danube River include Vienna and Budapest. Other popular river cruise destinations, depending on which itinerary you choose, might include Bruges, Porto, Bordeaux and Paris.

Where do Europe cruises depart from?

Baltic and Norwegian fjord cruises depart from a range of ports, including Southampton, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Bergen and Amsterdam. British Isles cruises depart from Southampton, Dover or other ports in England.

European river cruises leave from a variety of ports, depending on the river and route. Danube River cruises depart from Budapest, Passau or Nuremberg; Rhine River from Amsterdam (via canal) and Basel; Seine from Paris; Rhone from Lyon, Avignon and Arles; Portugal's Douro from Lisbon and Porto; Elbe from Berlin and Prague; and Bordeauxt from Bordeaux itself.

What are Popular Regions of Europe?

Northern sailings take in Scandinavia (including Norway's gorgeous fjord country), Russia and other Baltic capitals along with the U.K., Ireland and Iceland. Some venture north of the Arctic Circle to the very top of Europe.

River cruises bring travelers to even more destinations along the Rhine, Danube and other major waterways -- including Amsterdam, Paris, Vienna and Budapest.

What are Tips to Find Cruise deals to Europe?

Here are our best tips for finding a cheap cruise or cruise deal to Europe. If you book a “guaranteed cabin” (the line chooses for you), a cabin on a lower deck or sail on an older ship from your preferred brand, then you can get the best cost for a specific European cruise. Last-minute cruise specials to Europe appear as you get closer to the sail date, usually four weeks before departure. Taking a cruise to Europe in the off-season (before or after the busiest times) can also be a great way to find a cruise deal, but keep in mind some specific destinations are increasingly year-round.
