2024 Tour de France begins June 29 and includes historic firsts. Everything to know

The Paris Olympics and Paralympics will not be the only prestigious international sporting event held in France this summer.

The Tour de France, the preeminent event on the men’s cycling calendar, will return for its 111th edition from June 29 to July 21. During the three-week ride, 176 cyclists, representing 22 teams of eight, will complete 21 stages across hilly, flat and mountainous terrain. The course includes a grueling 52,230 meters (over 170,000 feet) of elevation gain and is 3,492 kilometers (2,170 miles) long. The taxing schedule includes only two rest days.

This year’s race will start in Florence, Italy, and conclude at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France. It will be the first time the finish line is not in or near Paris because the city will be hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. And the first time since 1975 the race will not finish on the Champs-Élysées.

The final stage will also break from tradition as it will be one of two time trial stages, which means the leader could be determined in the final leg. The last time the Tour de France ended with a time trial was in 1989.

In addition to Italy and France, the route passes through San Marino and Monaco. The route is famous for its picturesque scenery, from quaint rural villages to the towering Alps.

Each stage is timed, and the rider with the lowest cumulative time across all stages wins the acclaimed maillot jaune, or yellow jersey, to signify the general classification winner. Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, 27, hopes to seek a coveted three-peat but is still working his way back from a serious crash that hospitalized him for 12 days in April. If he does race, he will face fierce competition from a talented field that includes 2020 and 2021 winner Tadej Pogača of Slovenia.

Separate awards are also given to the best sprinter, climber and young cyclist.

Sepp Kuss, who finished as the top American in 12th place at last year’s Tour de France, is also set to return. Like last year, he will race on the same team as Vingegaard.

How to watch the 2024 Tour de France live

All stages of the Tour de France, as well as pre- and post-race coverage, will be available to stream live on Peacock. USA Network will also stream some of the stages.

NBC will simultaneously broadcast select stages of the event.

Stage 1 will begin June 29 at 6 a.m. ET. The rest of the stages typically start between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. ET.

Half of the dust roads are situated in the first 145 kilometres, which is the hilly part of the route. All in all, the riders face 32 kilometres on gravel, while the elevation gain adds up to roughly 2,000 metres.

The first dust road appears after 47 kilometres and it’s followed by the first climb, Côte de Bergères (1.7 kilometres at 5.2%). The second gravel sector also coincides with a hill, Côte de Baroville, 2.8 kilometres long and averaging 4.8%.

The riders enter the hardest part of the route after 95 kilometres in the saddle. Within 36 kilometres they face four sectors of gravel and three hills. The section opens with a 1.5 kilometres climb at 5.2% with a dust road in its wake. The two succeeding gravel roads both run uphill, respectively 2.2 kilometres at 5% and 3 kilometres at 4.3%. Another white road, which is not entirely flat either, rounds out this part of the race.

There are still some 70 kilometres remaining at this point. Via two gravel roads in 20 kilometres the riders continue onto five flat gravel sections within 18 kilometres. The last unpaved road then appears 10 kilometres before the line.

Troyes hosted the Tour de France sixteen times before. The last time was in 2017, when stage 6 finished and stage 7 started in the town on the banks of the river Seine. Marcel Kittel is the last stage winner in Troyes.

The first three riders across the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds.

'Spreading laughter on the roads of France': The Laughing Cow returns to the Tour de France

La Vache qui rit returns to the French Grand Tour as a sponsor, meaning the caravan might be a bit smellier this year

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Laughing Cow

Cheese feels about as French a thing as you get. Most of us could list half a dozen French examples off the top of our heads - Brie, Camembert, Reblochon, Comté, Roquefort, Gruyère to name but six. There is, however, one more French cheese you probably see every time you go to the supermarket, but don't realise quite how French it is.

The Laughing Cow, or La Vache qui rit en français, was a mainstay of the Tour de France 's publicity caravan for over 75 years, from 1933 to 2009, as well as many lunchboxes in the UK as well as France. Now, the red chuckling cow is set to return to both the men's race and the Tour de France Femmes , thanks to a new three-year deal with the races' organiser, ASO.

Cycling and commercial partnerships are inextricably linked. The Tour de France is the ultimate example of this, the world's biggest race, founded to promote a newspaper, which sees human billboards move around the country, screened to millions around the world.

Bike racing might seem like a niche sport to some, but to many of the biggest French brands, from Vittel to Orangina , via Orange and E.Leclerc, it is a guaranteed way of getting one's name out there.

We are not to think of France as the country of Albert Camus, George Sand, Paul Cézanne or Simone de Beauvoir. Non. We are to think France as the place of Tourtel Twist, Cochonou, and now, The Laughing Cow.

In an excitable press release from ASO on Thursday, it was announced that La Vache qui rit would be in the pantheon of French goods, "spreading positive vibes", somehow.

"The three-year sponsorship agreement will put La Vache qui rit in the heart of the caravan in each stage held in France," the organisers said. "With one goal in mind: celebrating laughter in France!"

There is nothing more hilarious than a soft, inoffensive cheese, packaged in triangles, after all.

"The Tour de France and La Vache qui rit share timeless fundamental values such as a positive outlook and a community focus," according to the press release. "For over a century, they have both charmed generations of people in France with their storied heritage and unique amalgam of fervour, fun and flavour. They are also popular, charismatic brands that expanded beyond their borders to conquer the international scene."

Have they "conquered the international scene"? Ask a non-cycling friend what they think of the Tour and Laughing Cow cheese and let's find out, I suppose.

Apparently there will be "collaborative activities, sampling opportunities and, most importantly, a tidal wave of laughter and smiles for spectators and TV viewers". We are just hoping they are as clever as Orangina's mystery Laurent Gina signs .

Laughing cow

Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour de France, was of course on board with the message of "laughter" coming from the collaboration, for some reason.

"Everyone knows the Tour de France and everyone knows La Vache qui rit [note: this cannot be true]," he said. "We are thrilled to see it return because it holds a special place in the hearts of people in France and exemplifies the values of the Tour. With La Vache qui rit, laughter and a popular celebration will fill the air in July."

Anne-Sophie Carrier, the general manager of Bel France, the dairy bigwigs behind LVQR, said: "This partnership with the Tour de France fills us with pride. It symbolises our dedication to spark joy and share moments through the iconic La Vache qui rit.

"Our popular brand, close to everyone and endowed with a rich heritage, will play a role: celebrating laughter in France and bringing everyone in France on board for a fun sporty experience full of flavour."

It's always a delight to be reminded just how French the Tour de France is - that's one of the things that make it so special after all. Shame about the rampant consumerism, but hey, let's sit back, eat a cheese triangle, and laugh. Laugh, and laugh, and laugh. Isn't cheese funny?

Etape 16 Tour de France 2024: Gruissan – Nimes

Flad – 188.6 km.

Tour de France 2021 - Stages, schedule, route map and key dates in the battle for yellow jersey

Tom Owen

Updated 28/06/2021 at 11:44 GMT

A balanced route that leans slightly towards the general classification rider with a strong time trial, the 2021 Tour de France route is an intriguing prospect. There are as many as eight potential stages for the sprinters, as well as some epic climbing days – including a trip into the Alps in the first week, plus a double-ascent of Mont Ventoux to contend with.

2023 Tour de France route

From the Basque Country to Paris and all the stages in between

Tour de France 2023 map

The 2023 Tour de France got underway on July 1st in Bilbao, Spain with another demanding route that includes only a single 22km hilly time trial in the Alps and mountain stages in all five of France’s mountain ranges. From the Grand Départ in the Basque Country to the finish in Paris, Cyclingnews has all the route details.

The very limited amount of time trialling and preponderance of mountains no doubt suits French riders  Thibaut Pinot , David Gaudu and Romain Bardet. As a result, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglič and Geraint Thomas targeted the Giro d’Italia, which had three times the amount of time trialling and fewer mountains.

Official information from race organiser ASO claimed the 3,404km route includes eight flat stages for the sprinters, four hilly stages suited to breakaways and eight mountain stages. Four of these include summit finishes: in the Pyrenees at Cauterets-Cambasque, on the legendary Puy de Dôme volcano in the Massif Central, on the Grand Colombier in the Jura and at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps.

Tour de France 2023 route revealed Tour de France stage-by-stage previews 2023 Tour de France to start in the Basque Country 2023 Tour de France set to return to Puy de Dome mountain finish

The other mountain stages are also extremely difficult, even if some are short and extra intense.

Stage 14 to Morzine includes 4,200m of climbing, alongside the mighty Col de Joux Plane and its testing descent to the finish. Stage 15 ends with the 11% ‘wall’ of Côte des Amerands and then the 7km 7.7% climb up to Saint-Gervais in view of Mont-Blanc.

Compressed profiles of the final week of the Tour de France

Stage 17 to Courchevel is arguably the queen stage, climbing the 2,304m-high Col de la Loze and then descends to finish on the altiport runway. Stage 20 is a final brutal multi-mountain stage in the Vosges between Belfort and Le Markstein ski resort.

The only time trial is on stage 16 in the Arve Valley near Sallanches after the second rest day, but the 22km route between Passy and Combloux will test riders' bike handling skills and climbing as much as their time trialling. The stage includes the Côte de Domancy, where Bernard Hinault forged his 1980 Worlds victory, and which also featured as part of the final week time trial in the 2016 Tour.

2022 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard was arguably the best climber of the last two editions of the Tour and he appears to have plenty of opportunities to go on the attack on the steep ascents in 2023.

Two-time winner  Tadej Pogačar  will no doubt relish the route on offer for next July’s challenge against Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers and anyone else.

Tour de France Stage 16 Preview: Bring On the Crucial Time Trial

A 22.4-kilometer time trial after a rest day could prove to be decisive in the epic GC battle.

75th criterium du dauphine 2023 stage 4

Stage 16 - Passy to Combloux (22.4km Individual Time Trial) - Tuesday, July 18

After another rest day, the race resumes on Tuesday with the Tour’s only individual time trial, a 22.4km race against the clock from Passy to Combloux that–thanks to a Category 2 climb near the end of the course–should favor the Tour’s GC contenders over the Tour’s time trial specialists.

The stage begins in Passy, which isn’t far from the base of the climb to Saint-Gervais, which hosted the summit finish to Stage 15. From the start the riders will race north toward the day’s first obstacle: the uncategorized Côte de la Cascade de Cœur, which they’ll summit after just 4.1km.

Once over the summit they’ll race down toward the first time check, 7.1km into the stage, and then on to Sallanches. This is the fastest section of the course as the riders speed downhill from the top of the Côte de la Cascade de Cœur and toward the town that hosted the world road championships in 1964 and 1980, the latter of which was won by French legend Bernard Hinault.

tour de france stage 16 tt

After looping through Sallanches, the riders head south toward Domancy on a long, straight false flat that ends with the day’s second time check, 16.1km into the stage. This is the power portion of the course, where riders will need to push a big gear at a high cadence, while still saving their legs for the sting in this course’s tail: the Category 2 Côte de Domancy (2.5km at 9.4%).

The road goes up immediately after the second time check and the riders will have to adjust from pushing a big gear on the road from Sallanches to spinning a lighter gear on the climb’s steep slopes. Managing that shift–and pacing their efforts so as to have something left for the climb itself–will determine which riders set the fastest times.

The riders “summit” the Côte de Domancy 3.5km from the finish line, but that’s a bit deceiving as the road–despite easing out for a kilometer after the KOM banner and the day’s final time check–continues to climb all the way to the finish line in Combloux.

Riders to watch

This stage should favor the Tour’s top-2 riders, Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who also happen to be two of the race’s best time trialists. Both can push big gears on the stage’s flat and downhill sections and up their cadences–and their wattage outputs–on the final climb to the finish line. Vingegaard has a slight mental edge given the fact that–as the race leader–he’ll start after Pogačar and therefore have the benefit of knowing all of the Slovenian’s times as he passes through the course’s three checks. But at the end of the day, we won’t be surprised if the gaps between the two of them aren’t enormous.

If one of these two doesn’t win the stage, our money’s on Belgium’s Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). Desperate for a stage victory, he came close to winning Stage 15 on Sunday and is one of the world’s best when it comes to racing against the clock. His team will let him go all-out–his splits will help them plan Vingegaard’s own effort–and he can probably hold his own on the final climb.

We’re also keeping an eye on Spain’s Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS-Grenadiers) who currently sits third overall. The 22-year-old’s not a bad time trialist, and a good ride Tuesday will go a long way toward giving him the gap he needs to hold-off Great Britain’s Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe) for the Tour’s final podium spot.

When to Watch

Beginning around 7:00 a.m. EDT, the riders will start the stage in reverse order of the Tour’s GC standings, with the majority of the racers hitting the course at 1-minute intervals. A second group will start at 90-second intervals, and the Tour’s best riders will start the stage at 2-minute intervals. The fastest riders should cover the course in about 32 minutes.

The list of starting times hadn’t been finalized by the time we went to press, but we’ll probably tune-in around 10:30 a.m. EDT to watch the final hour of the stage. We know that Rodríguez begins at 10:56 a.m. EDT, Pogačar begins at 10:58 a.m. EDT, and Vingegaard, the last rider to hit the course, rolls down the start ramp at 11:00 a.m. EDT.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.
