A love story spanning two decades between two men who are at the opposite ends of the political spectrum during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1973, Alan Oakley lives as a straight, uptight Young Republican working for an establishment newspaper--until he meets Tommy Ballenger, a Texas teenager who has moved to Los Angeles to work for gay rights. When Alan first meets him - at a party organized by Peter Baxter, an older entertainment lawyer, Alan sees Tommy as a potential interview subject for his book, a conservative attack on gay rights that he plans to call "The Straight Truth." Before he knows quite what has happened, Alan finds himself in bed and falling for Tommy. Alan and Tommy soon become the perfect couple, which rouses the envy of Peter, who promptly devises a cunning plan to break them up that includes publishing Alan's long-abandoned, long-repudiated manuscript anonymously.

The Trip is a 2002 independent drama film directed by Miles Swain, who also stars in the movie, alongside Larry Sullivan, Steve Braun, and Ray Baker. The movie was released on August 15, 2003, in the United States and received mostly positive reviews from the critics. The movie revolves around the story of two gay men, Tommy (Larry Sullivan) and Alan (Steve Braun), who embark on a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco to attend the wedding of their mutual friend. However, the trip is not only about reaching their destination; it's also about exploring their relationship and personal lives.

Tommy is a struggling actor who's just come out of a relationship, while Alan is a successful writer, who's in a committed relationship with a woman. As they make their way up the California coast, they engage in conversations that reveal their inner-most secrets, fears, and desires. They talk about their past relationships, sexual experiences, fears of commitment, and personal ambitions.

The relationship between Tommy and Alan is at the center of the movie's theme, as they both try to navigate their feelings for each other. Tommy is open about his sexual orientation, while Alan is not so sure about his own feelings. As the movie progresses, they begin to have deeper conversations about their sexuality, and this leads to a series of unexpected events that challenge their friendship.

The movie is shot beautifully, with stunning landscapes and visuals of California's coastline, mountains, and forests. The soundtrack also plays an important role in the movie, adding to the emotional depth of the scenes.

The supporting cast of the movie is also noteworthy, with Ray Baker playing the role of Carl, an old flame of Tommy's, who they visit on their way to San Francisco. The interaction between the three characters is intense and adds to the movie's emotional depth.

The Trip is a movie that explores themes of love, friendship, and personal identity, and does so in a way that's both heartwarming and thought-provoking. The performances of the lead actors are authentic and moving, and the storyline is engaging and well-paced.

In conclusion, The Trip is a must-watch for anyone who's interested in independent cinema, or for those who enjoy movies that explore the complexities of human relationships. It's a beautiful and moving movie that will leave you thinking about it long after it's over.

The Trip is a 2002 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.0 and a MetaScore of 47.

The best LGBTQ+ movies to watch this Pride Month on Netflix

  • June is Pride Month , a celebration of LGBTQ+ people, art, and culture.
  • These 10 movies, which are available to stream on Netflix, all deal with queer subject matter.
  • They include dramas, rom-coms, documentaries, and an animated movie.

Insider Today

Pride Month has been celebrated since 1970, though it wasn't officially recognized in the US until 1999, when President Bill Clinton declared June to be "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month." Over the years, it has become more inclusive and now represents any identity across the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Companies around the world now also mark Pride, sometimes to criticism. Some have been accused of " rainbow-washing ," which is when a brand supports the queer community for clout or to make money, rather than out of actual activism.

But Pride is also a time to hear new stories from this community.

These 10 movies, now streaming on Netflix, are a good way to be both entertained and educated.

Colman Domingo was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the biopic "Rustin."

"Rustin," released in 2023, tells the story of Bayard Rustin , a civil rights activist who was a major figure in planning the historic March on Washington in 1963, the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

Rustin was also gay, which meant his efforts went largely under the radar until much later — he was effectively unknown for decades.

"Disclosure" is an in-depth look at what it's like to be trans in Hollywood.

"Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen" was released by Netflix in 2020, and features interviews with trans celebrities like Laverne Cox, Michaela Antonia Jaé Rodriguez, Chaz Bono, Alexandra Billings, Elliot Fletcher, and more.

In addition to hearing from these voices, "Disclosure" also examines how transgender people have been portrayed in the media over the last 60 years.

"Nimona" is an animated film based on the graphic novel of the same name.

the trip movie gay

In "Nimona," viewers are introduced to a neo-medieval society where two knights (voiced by Riz Ahmed and Eugene Lee Yang) can be boyfriends, and no one blinks an eye.

But the trans representation is more subtle. The titular character, Nimona, is a shapeshifter who chooses the form of a teenage girl. As Business Insider's Palmer Haasch noted, many have read Nimona's identity as a trans allegory.

The film was nominated for best animated feature at the 2024 Oscars.

"The Half of It" is a sweet coming-of-age tale about first love.

the trip movie gay

In "The Half of It," released in 2020, social outcast Ellie is hired by her neighbor Paul to help him woo Aster, a fellow student on whom Ellie also has a crush.

Inspired by the play "Cyrano de Bergerac," Ellie and Aster begin a letters- and texts-only relationship, with Aster thinking she's corresponding with Paul.

Not only is this a story about Ellie and Aster, but it also is the story of Paul and Ellie's friendship as his friendship with Ellie challenges his beliefs.

"A Single Man" stars Colin Firth as a grieving college professor.

the trip movie gay

In this 2009 drama, Firth plays George Falconer, a college professor whose longtime boyfriend, Jim (Matthew Goode), has recently died.

Interspersed with flashbacks of their relationship, the film follows George as he decides to kill himself rather than live with his grief. However, the people he meets along the way may persuade him to continue living.

Firth was nominated for an Oscar for his performance.

"Tangerine" is on its way to becoming a holiday favorite.

the trip movie gay

Kitana Kiki Rodriguez stars as Sin-Dee Rella, a trans sex worker who is just trying to live her life after getting out of prison on Christmas Eve in 2015's "Tangerine."

Deceptively sweet, "Tangerine" is about a largely unrepresented community onscreen. While director Sean Baker doesn't romanticize the day-to-day lives of Sin-Dee and her friends, "Tangerine" is a heartwarming holiday soon-to-be classic.

"Alex Strangelove" is perfect for any teen figuring out their identity.

the trip movie gay

In this 2018 teen rom-com, Alex is a high school student who, in a rush to lose his virginity, decides to have sex with his best friend, Claire. However, when he meets Elliot, a gay classmate, Alex begins to think more about who he's attracted to and who he really is.

"Boy Erased" sheds a light on conversion therapy.

the trip movie gay

"Boy Erased," released in 2018, is based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by Garrard Conley.

As a teen in the early 2000s, Jared Eamon (Lucas Hedges) is part of a Christian family in Arkansas. He is sent to a conversion therapy camp in Memphis.

While not the most uplifting watch, conversion therapy is a harmful practice that is still being used now, and "Boy Erased" shows exactly why it doesn't work.

"A Secret Love" is a 2020 documentary about a relationship between two women that remained a secret for almost 70 years.

Terry Donahue, a player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and Pat Henschel were in a relationship for 72 years after meeting the 1940s.

But somehow, they were able to keep their relationship a secret for almost 70 of those years, before telling their grand-nephew (and director) Chris Bolan. The film tells the story of their love, and how they kept it hidden.

The 2020 adaptation of "The Boys in the Band" reunites the cast from the 2018 Broadway revival.

Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesús, Brian Hutchinson, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Tuc Watkins — all gay actors — reunited for the movie adaptation of the 1968 play after acting in the 2018 revival.

The film is about a group of friends living in New York City — each with a unique relationship with their sexuality, view on monogamy, and more — who are forced to be in an apartment together for the night to celebrate a friend's birthday.

Pride Month has started but what does that mean? A look at what it is, how it's celebrated

Pride Month has officially started as of June 1 and there’s a lot to celebrate.

Throughout history, people who identify with the LGBTQ+ community have struggled to gain equal rights within and to overcome adversity and discrimination.

But what is Pride Month exactly? Here's a look at the history of how it came to be and how it is celebrated.

Rainbow flag meaning: A brief history lesson on how the Pride flag came to be

What is Pride Month?

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York and celebrates the LGBTQ community and the fight for equal rights.

The Stonewall Uprising began on June 28, 1969 , when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a prominent gay bar in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. The protests that followed are credited with a shift in LGBTQ+ activism in the U.S.

The following year saw some of the first Pride parades in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Despite the pivotal role transgender people and women of color played in the riots, including trans activist Marsha P. Johnson , they were largely excluded from early Pride celebrations.

"The reality is that most of the folks on the front lines at the Stonewall uprising were trans women, trans women of color, other people of color, butch lesbians,” Cathy Renna, Communications Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force, told USA TODAY in 2022. “And yet somehow, the power that was coming together ... to put together Pride events was from cisgender , gay white men.”

Today, Pride Month presents an opportunity for visibility and community. In addition to celebrating LGBTQ love and joy, it’s also a time to highlight important policy and resource issues the community faces. In 2021, NYC Pride banned law enforcement presence at Pride events through 2025 because of escalating violence "against marginalized groups, specifically BIPOC and trans communities."

This year, anti-trans legislation is growing across the country. Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric online has also lead to threats at schools and hospitals and to trans communities , USA TODAY found.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, 130 bills targeting trans rights have been filed and 325 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been proposed in 2024. More than 650 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in 2023.

When was Pride Month created?

The first Pride marches in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago happened on June 28, 1970, the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

In New York, thousands marched from Greenwich Village to Central Park in what is widely considered the first Pride parade in the U.S.

But even before the first Pride parades, the gay rights movement was beginning to gain traction all over the country. In 1950, for example, activist Harry Hay founded the Mattachine Society, the first national gay rights organization. And in 1955, the first lesbian rights organization, the Daught ers of Bilitis , was founded.

The year 1965 saw the first “Reminder Day,” an annual picketing event outside of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall calling attention to the lack of civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community. In 1966, the Mattachine Society staged a “sip-in” at a Greenwich Village bar after the New York Liquor Authority banned serving gay patrons because they were “disorderly,” PBS reports. And in 1966, the Compton's Cafeteria riot began when a police officer manhandled a transgender customer at a San Francisco eatery. This led to the founding of the National Transsexual Counseling Unit. As the LGBTQ+ rights movement grew, the community turned away from outdated terms like transsexual and homosexual to transgender, gay and lesbian. While many consider these terms offensive, some still use them to describe their identities.

The Christopher Street Liberation Day March on June 28, 1970 , marked a shift from politeness to pride. In earlier protests, the “Homophile Movement” of the 1950s and 1960s focused on respectability – dressing in suits and skirts and carrying signs in protest. Post-Stonewall riots didn’t come with a dress code or tone requirement.

“A new spirit has entered the struggle for homosexual freedom – a new spirit both militant in tone and revolutionary in orientation,” a 1970 Gay Liberation Front flyer reads. “Homosexuals at last have realized that they will never be able to be liberated by politely asking the system. Freedom is never given – it must be taken.”

What does LGBTQ+ stand for?

  • B: Bisexual
  • T: Transgender
  • Q: Queer, or sometimes questioning
  • +: Encompasses other identities under the rainbow umbrella

Major Pride parades across the U.S.

Here’s a glimpse at the dates and themes of some of the country’s biggest pride celebrations:

  • Provincetown, MA: May 31-June 2
  • Washington, D.C.: June 8 ( Parade ) and June 9 (Festival). The 2024 theme is "Totally Radical."
  • Los Angeles: June 9 (Parade) and June 8 (LA Pride Festival). The 2024 theme is “Power in Pride.”
  • Chicago: June 30 ( Parade ), June 22-23 ( Chicago Pride Fest )
  • San Francisco: June 29-30 (Parade). The 2024 theme is “Beacon of Love."
  • New York: June 30. The 2024 theme is “Reflect. Empower. Unite.”

Lawmakers mark the start to Pride Month on social media

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, President Joe Biden writes a message to the LGBTQ+ community.

“For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live proudly – even when it meant putting their lives at risk,” Biden wrote in the post. “This Pride Month, we recommit to realizing the promise of America for all, to celebrating LGBTQI+ people, and to taking pride in the example they set.”

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) shares the progress that California has made regarding LGBTQ+ rights on X.

“Always proud to represent San Francisco, especially during #PrideMonth as we mark our progress from Compton’s Cafeteria to City Hall, fighting HIV/AIDS to uplifting trans rights,” Pelosi wrote. “We embrace love, advance freedoms and - when we win - will enshrine LGBTQ+ Equality into law. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️”

In a X post, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) posted a video discussing Pride Month and things that have happened in recent years.

“While we have made incredible progress since the Stonewall riots over 50 years ago, including codifying marriage equality law. It is important to remember that that progress isn’t linear. Over the past few years we have sadly seen terrible attacks at the state and local level towards transgender Americans. We’ve seen members of the LGBTQ community ostracized and persecuted, often by craven politicians, for short term, political purposes," Warnock said. "All the while they are simply living as their most authentic selves. But that cannot weaken our resolve to keep working to build what Dr. King called the ‘beloved community’ where all of God’s children are embraced, no matter who they are, where they come from or who they love.”

Travel app Sēkr can plan your next road trip with its new AI tool

the trip movie gay

Sēkr, a startup that offers a mobile app for outdoor enthusiasts and campers, is launching a new AI tool for planning road trips. The new tool, called Copilot, is available on the startup’s updated website and app, which is used by more than 100,000 users.

The company was founded in 2016 with the goal of helping the “van life” community find campsites based on their needs, such as shower facilities, restrooms, overnight van parking or free Wi-Fi. The app also allows users to connect with fellow travelers who want to participate in outdoor activities together, like rock climbing or skiing.

After being acquired by van company Peace Vans in December 2023, the startup is under new leadership. Sēkr and Peace Vans CEO Harley Sitner was a user of the app for seven years but had noticed last year that the app had gone dormant. He learned that the founders of the startup were going to unwind the app due to the sudden shift in global fundraising climates in late 2022, despite having a strong user base. Sitner, who was a former product manager at Microsoft, was approached to acquire Sēkr in November 2023.

Fast-forward eight months, the startup is now looking to help people better plan the journeys to their destinations, while also updating the app with enhanced features that stay true to Sēkr’s original mission.

With the new AI-powered road trip planning tool, Sēkr is combining natural language processing with proprietary data from its community of users who have left reviews and ratings about specific places. Copilot also looks at publicly available data when creating road trip itineraries. The tool leverages OpenAI’s GPT, Meta’s Llama and others.

the trip movie gay

“For the millions of people traveling by van, car, or RV this summer, Sēkr Copilot will help you bypass hours of trip planning to quickly deliver a better itinerary,” Sitner said in a statement. “AI isn’t going to create a panoramic sunset, but it will help you overcome the notorious planner’s block, set you up for serendipitous moments, and connect you to an authentic road trip experience co-created by Sēkr’s incredible community of dedicated users.”

Copilot can be accessed via the new “Trip Planning” tab on the startup’s website or app. Once users open the tool, they will be asked to answer a series of prompts about where they’re going and what they’re looking for. The tool will then provide a travel itinerary that has editable trip legs that include camping destinations, stops for food and outdoor activities.

The idea behind Copilot is to help travelers discover unique places that they may not have known about otherwise. For instance, the tool may encourage travelers to check out a taco truck parked by the side of a dusty road in Baja that users have said offers better food than a five-star reviewed Denny’s outside of Los Angeles. Or, the tool may encourage users to explore secluded, unmarked areas in BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land that overlooks scenic views.

Sēkr is available on iOS and Android . The app’s basic features are free to use. Users can unlock premium features like, offline maps, event discount codes, and unlimited messaging and searching for $4.99 per month.

The startup previously received $2.25 million in seed funding led by Storyteller Overland, with participation from Backstage Capital, Techstars, Ad Astra Ventures, Crescent Ridge Ventures and Andy Ballester, the co-founder of GoFundMe.
