the JFK Tour

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE, WHERE IT ALL HAPPENED

Vividly recount the history of jfk's assassination in detail while winding through dallas on a historical tour..

From Dallas, Texas, the flash apparently official, President Kennedy died at 1 p.m. Central Standard Time, 2 o’clock Eastern Standard Time, some 38 minutes ago. — WALTER CRONKITE, CBS NEWS ANCHOR (FROM HIS NOV. 22, 1963 BROADCAST)

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?

November 22, 1963.

The assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, on November 22, 1963, remains one of the defining events of the 20th century.

The shooting in Dallas, Texas, before thousands of onlookers was also captured by TV cameras and in home movies, yet in the minds of many, much about what happened that day remains shrouded in mystery.

President Kennedy's alleged killer, Lee Harvey Oswald, was himself shot and killed as cameras rolled just two days later.

Why Oswald shot Kennedy and wounded Texas governor John Connally, and whether he acted alone or was part of a wider conspiracy, has been the subject of official inquiries and countless films, books, and newspaper and magazine articles over the past 50 years.

The internet has also become fertile ground for speculation and allegations of involvement by the mafia, the Russians, the Cubans and even vice-president Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy.

The Warren Commission, which spent nearly a year carefully studying the assassination, agreed.

Scientific acoustical evidence establishes a high probability that two gunmen fired at President John F. Kennedy. Other scientific evidence does not preclude the possibility of two gunmen firing at the President. Scientific evidence negates some specific conspiracy allegations.

The committee believes, on the basis of the evidence available to it, that President John F. Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy. The committee is unable to identify the other gunman or the extent of the conspiracy.

Since the president's assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald has remained the enigmatic figure at the center of the Kennedy assassination. Was he a lone gunman?

Winding thru the WEST END, following the killer, backtracking the events, retracing history.

We follow the trail of events that change American history leading to the president's shooting and the aftermath of the assassination.

THE JFK MEMORIAL

We start our journey at the JFK Memorial, designed by Phillip Johnson, a Kennedy family friend, the stark and simple monument to the late president symbolizes the freedom of Kennedy's spirit.

DEALEY PLAZA

The site includes the former Texas School Book Depository and the Grassy Knowll, two of the sights forever associated with the presidency assassination and the endless conspiracy theories that followed.

THE GRASSY KNOLL

Conspiracy theorists for years have questioned the findings of investigators who concluded that Kennedy was felled by shots from a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald. Was the killer shots fired from the legendary grassy knoll?

No one could have predicted that this particular road would host his final moments, least of all him or his wife Jackie Kennedy, as their motorcade rode jubilantly before crowds of adoring supporters.

If you don’t know the story behind it, seeing an old log cabin in the middle of a bustling urban setting might seem strange. However, history buffs should not miss the John Neely Bryan Cabin, a tiny, one-room replica of the city’s first house. John Neely Bryan, who founded Dallas in the early 1840s, built his cabin near the Trinity River in hopes of establishing and developing a permanent settlement in North Texas. Tour start location. Before you start your tour, please go to the John Neely Bryan Cabin located at 600 Elm Street, Dallas TX, 75202.

JFK Memorial Plaza

Dallas JFK Memorial

Dallas’ John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza was dedicated June 24, 1970. In the years since, it has become an integral part of the city’s urban landscape and cultural heritage. It is located one block east of Dealey Plaza, between Main and Commerce streets, on land donated by Dallas County.

Dealey Plaza / Grassy Knoll

View of Dealey Plaza, the plaza is a significant part of Dallas history.

Dealey Plaza is a significant part of Dallas history. The site marks the birthplace of Dallas, originally founded by John Neely Bryan in the 1840s. Almost a century later, as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration, the familiar white concrete colonnades and triple underpass were constructed, creating a vehicular park to serve as gateway to the city. The project was spearheaded by civic leader George Bannerman Dealey. After G.B. Dealey died in 1946, a bronze statue to honor him was installed in the park that already bore his name.

School Depository / Sixth Floor Museum

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

One of Texas' most visited historic sites, School Depository (The Sixth Floor Museum) at Dealey Plaza chronicles the life, death and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Admission to the The Sixth Floor Museum is not included in the tour. If you are planning to visit The Sixth Museum exhibit, purchase your admission directly from the museum's website (museum visits are timed, make sure sure that your museum's admission does not overlap with your tour, ideally purchase your ticket 30 minutes after the end of your tour).

Matador Original Series

The definitive jfk tour of dallas, texas.

W hether you’re a history buff or a conspiracy theorist, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy has fascinated Americans for decades. During a presidential motorcade on November 22, 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald (allegedly) fired the shot that killed JFK as he rode through Dallas’s Dealey Plaza. The ensuing controversy surrounding the shooter’s identity and motive, as well as the political repercussions, have made the tragedy one of the most widely recognized and debated in US history. Although JFK wasn’t a native Texan , by looking at the vast number of tributes, memorials, and museums in Dallas, you’d think he was. Dallas might have been where the former president was tragically killed, but the city is certainly doing its part to preserve Kennedy’s memory. To learn everything about the JFK assassination right where it happened, here are seven sites in Dallas you need to visit.

These spots were all recommended by travelstoke ® user Alicia Butler . travelstoke® is a new app from Matador that connects you with fellow travelers and locals and helps you build trip itineraries with spots that integrate seamlessly into Google Maps and Uber. Dealey Plaza

Any JFK-themed tour of Dallas needs to include Dealey Plaza — the site of the president’s assassination. The plaza is a city park in the West End district and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993 in commemoration of the tragic incident that occurred there. When JFK’s car slowed down to make a turn here, Oswald seized the opportunity to fire the fatal bullet. A white “X” on the pavement of Elm Street marks the exact spot where Kennedy was shot.

Where: West End, Dallas, TX 75202

The Grassy Knoll

The Dealy Plaza and its surrounding buildings in downtown Dallas

No site associated with the JFK assassination is as famous as the Grassy Knoll, and it might have had nothing to do with the assassination at all. Located right across from Dealey Plaza, the Grassy Knoll serves as a focal point for conspiracy theorists who believe it was from this grassy area that a second mysterious gunman shot the president. The little hill rose to national prominence when Albert Merriman Smith of United Press International, who had been riding in the press pool car, sent a dispatch from the scene after the shooting that said, “Some of the Secret Service agents thought the gunfire was from an automatic weapon fired to the right rear of the president’s car, probably from a grassy knoll to which police rushed.”

Hilton Fort Worth

Hilton Fort Worth

This is the hotel where Kennedy stayed the night before his death. Prior to the assassination, Kennedy had breakfast in the ornate Crystal Ballroom and delivered a speech to 2,000 visitors. While some might find it morbid to stay in the same hotel as the doomed president, real history enthusiasts will enjoy the site’s historic significance. At the end of each promenade on the second floor, old photographs are displayed depicting the former president’s time at the hotel and in Dallas just before his death. Opened in 1921, the hotel was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. There’s also a bronze memorial statue of Kennedy outside the hotel. Real JFK fanatics with deep pockets can shell out $2,500 to stay in the massive JFK Suite, which isn’t even where the president stayed; the decor was inspired by Jackie Kennedy’s interior renovation of the White House during her stint as First Lady.

JFK Memorial

This memorial erected in honor of JFK might not be among the country’s most recognized monuments, but it’s certainly an integral part of Dallas’s history. Dedicated in 1970, the JFK Memorial , located a block from Dealey Plaza between Main and Commerce streets, resembles an open tomb. It’s 30-feet high, 50-feet wide, and is supported by eight columns each of which end in a light fixture. The design is meant to symbolize JFK’s freedom of spirit. The memorial is open seven days a week, and tickets are $18 for adults.

Ruth Paine House Museum

A 20-minute drive from Dallas will bring you to a little-known site connected to the Kennedy assassination. The Ruth Paine House Museum in Irving was where Lee Harvey Oswald spent the night before the assassination. Oswald’s family had been lodging there temporarily, and he used the garage to conceal the rifle he used to shoot the president. In the wake of the incident, law enforcement descended on the residence of Ruth Paine, the unwitting housewife and proprietor. Now the house has been converted into a museum, educating visitors about the assassination through dramatic vignettes, with actors portraying Ruth Paine, Lee Harvey Oswald, and his wife. Tours run Tuesday through Saturday, and reservations can be made on the museum’s website.

The Sixth Floor Museum

Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza where Kennedy was shot

If museums are your thing, this is the definitive Dallas museum dedicated to the JFK assassination. At the Sixth Floor Museum , you’ll learn more about the former president, the timeline of his assassination, and the associated controversies than you can handle. From historic photographs, films, and memorabilia to official government reports of the investigation, this museum has it all. For those who can’t physically make it to the museum, there’s even a museum webcam that gives a live view from the sniper spot. If you couldn’t guess from its name, the museum is located on the sixth floor of the Dallas County Administration building, the exact spot from which Lee Harvey Oswald is said to have assassinated the president. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and tickets are $18 for adults.

Food Tours of America Dallas

The Dealy Plaza and its surrounding buildings in Downtown Dallas

This is Dallas’s only walking tour of the JFK experience, and since it involves food, you really shouldn’t miss it. After a 45-minute stroll through the Grassy Knoll and Dealey Plaza, your guide will bring you on a restaurant tour through Dallas’s West Village. It includes a series of food tastings punctuated by casual walks and even rail rides related to the JFK assassination. While JFK might not have personally eaten at the restaurants offered on the tour, learning about a presidential assassination and processing conspiracy theories are much more palatable with some delicious food in front of you. The tour is only offered on Fridays at 9:30 AM, lasts approximately four hours, and costs $72 per person. Visit the official website for more details, or to book a tour.

Date Idea: Visit the 5 Best JFK Sites in Dallas

President John F Kennedy speaking in public

We all wish we could go back in time and witness major historical events, such as the day when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. While time travel may be impossible, there are a lot of ways to revisit the exact moment when time stopped.

Events such as this stand out in our memories, but even if you don’t remember November 22nd, 1963, you know this was a legendary occasion. So it’s no wonder that visiting the JFK sites rank among the top things to do in Dallas.

Table of Contents

JFK sites in Dallas to visit

Five Dallas locations played a significant role in the moment America lost its beloved 35th president.

Everyone knows the story, but history comes alive when you can see them in person.

You can visit them on your own or learn all about the sites on a professionally guided tour. Either way, we think checking out the JFK sites in Dallas would be a fun date idea, especially if you enjoy exploring conspiracy theories.

Get ready for an interesting ride!

1. Dealey Plaza

The presidential limousine car was right in front of Dealey Plaza when he was shot, so your first stop ought to be the place where he lost his life. Designated a historic landmark on the 30th anniversary of the assassination, it’s Dallas’ most visited tour site.

When you visit, you might notice some street lights and street signs dating from 1963. Even the buildings surrounding the plaza remain the same, so you’ll definitely feel as though you’ve been caught in a time warp.

Bring out the Kennedy conspiracy theories and stand on the sloped “grassy knoll” that was related to the event. While official reports state that the fatal shot came from the sixth floor of the Book Depository, several witnesses reported hearing shots coming from the grassy hill behind them.

Tip: If you’re staying for a couple of nights, consider staying in one of the hotels around Dealey Plaza.

2. JFK Memorial Site

If you want to pay tribute to John Kennedy with your significant other, you should also visit his famous memorial site in Dallas. The site is easy to reach as it’s only 200 feet east of Dealey Plaza.

Standing at a proud height of 30 feet, the memorial is made entirely out of grey concrete walls.

One of the interesting things you’ll get to see at the memorial is a wall engraving dedicated to the fallen president. They inscribed it on granite that can be found in the courtyard.

3. The Sixth Floor Museum

If you’re a history enthusiast, you’ll love to pay a visit to this museum. The Sixth Floor Museum was established in 1989 in honor of John Kennedy. It’s one of the main attractions of Dallas, considering it has everything you might want to see about the former president.

Everything that has to do with the president’s legacy is on display. The exhibition is designed as a timeline, detailing everything that led up to his 1963 assassination. It features historical artifacts, documents, and photographs of the incident. You’ll also find lots of info about JFK’s presidency and some interesting facts about his family.

Using the audio guide included with admission, it takes about 90 minutes to go through the exhibit if you listen to everything.

  • Hours: Wed-Sun, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The final introductory film begins at 3:55 p.m.
  • Cost: Adults $18

4. Oswald Rooming House

If you want the full JFK experience, you won’t want to miss the house where Oswald was living on that unfortunate week in 1963. He rented a room in the Oak Cliff boarding house for $8 a week, under the name O.H. Lee.

You can easily drive past the house in the Oak Cliff neighborhood; it’s located at 1026 N. Beckley Street.

Or for the full experience, you can take a tour of the house and see Oswald’s actual bedroom. It’s been carefully preserved, with his same narrow bed and the upright armoire where he kept his clothing and handgun.

5. Texas Theatre

Getting to see the place that Lee Harvey Oswald ran to after his horrifying crime is kind of interesting.

Not long after Kennedy was shot, Oswald ducked into the Texas Theatre, a movie house near the rooming house. He sneaked in without paying halfway through a showing.

Believing he fit the description of a man who was suspected in slaying a police officer, the box office attendant called the police. Dallas police officers converged on the Texas Theatre and pulled him from his seat in the back of the auditorium.

Next thing you know, he was accused of shooting the president.

Interesting trivia: If you’re wondering where Oswald sat, the original seats are long gone. The spot where he was sitting is marked, but in one sense, since he didn’t pay for a ticket, he sort of didn’t really have a seat to begin with.

  • Want to tour the building? Email them at [email protected] and they’ll do their best to set it up. They request a $10 donation for individual tours or $20 for a small group.

Did we miss anything?

We’re pretty sure we’ve covered all the Dallas sites related to Kennedy’s assassination, but if we missed something, let us know!

In any case, we think you’ll enjoy visiting these spots with your partner. All the sites we mentioned be seen in a few hours, and if you want to spring for a professionally guided JFK tour, you’ll find that they are super interesting.
