UC Davis West Village Neighborhood

Imagine a sustainable community, rich in culture, arts, innovation, and education — a walkable, mixed-use neighborhood in a location surrounded by entertainment, exciting opportunities, and utmost appreciation of nature.

UC Davis West Village

UC Davis West Village transcends community and campus norms beyond “just buildings” into a realm of innovation in sustainability. As the largest zero-net-energy development in the United States, West Village consists of academic facilities, innovative Energy Hubs, and housing for more than 2,000 students, faculty and staff.

The area west of Vic Fazio Highway offers more than 650 apartments, a recreation center, study facilities, outdoor community space, and 42,500 square feet of commercial space for endless opportunities. A central community building features a fitness center, multipurpose room and student support services.

Exceptional Education

Sacramento City College Davis Center at UC Davis West Village is the first community college center to be located on a University of California campus, thanks to a partnership between UC Davis and the Los Rios Community College District. The college center offers 11 classrooms, a computer lab, art studio, career technology center, administrative offices and counseling space. And it has earned a silver certification for LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Future Of Innovation

In addition, UC Davis West Village houses the Joe A. Heidrick Western Center for Agricultural Equipment (WCAE), the Western Cooling Efficiency Center, and the UC Davis Center for Design in the Public Interest. The UC Davis Energy and Transportation Center is the first of three planned energy hubs and was established by a group of energy research centers, including:

  • UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies
  • China Center for Energy & Transportation
  • Sustainable Transportation Energy Pathways (STEPs)
  • Urban Land Use and Transportation Center
  • Center for Water-Energy Efficiency
  • Energy Efficiency Center Policy
  • Institute for Energy, Environment & the Economy
  • Western Cooling Efficiency Center

Modern Student Housing

While UC Davis West Village’s innovators look to the future, the community itself serves an urgent need now — housing. As housing in Davis becomes more difficult for UC Davis students to secure, West Village offers up hundreds of student apartments as respite for transfer students, incoming students, and continuing students who struggle to find student housing.

Sol at West Village

Sol at West Village is an exciting, eco-friendly housing community with a variety of floor plans, resort-style amenities, and luxurious apartments. Energy-efficient appliances are included in the apartments, along with a 42-inch, flat-screen TV in every living room; full-size washer and dryer; and private bathrooms.

Of course, looking to the future is a natural part of a planned community, which is why additional housing is already underway. The Green at West Village is set to add 1,250 units and will feature recreation fields, a community building, and devoted study areas. And in sticking to environmentally-friendly practices, The Green will also feature a photovoltaic system which will power the facility.

Around The Town

UC Davis West Village offers a unique living experience you can’t find elsewhere. And if you venture a short distance, you’ll find everything else you could possibly need. Excitement, entertainment, exploration and education are around every turn as murals and sculptures adorn the area and art galleries welcome visitors. Three cinema complexes keep crowds on the edges of their seats, while more than ten stages present a plethora of theater and performance art.

UC Davis isn’t the only place in West Village where students can learn. Trivia nights are hosted weekly at nearby eateries, and the area overflows with interesting exhibits at Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, UC Davis Design Museum, The Artery, John Natsoulas Gallery, Bohart Museum of Entomology and Exploreit Science Center.

A Breath of Fresh Air

But if you find the indoors a bit too stuffy, go outside and get ready for some fabulous ways to exercise both body and mind. UC Davis West Village is a bicyclist’s dream, where bike paths and greenbelts weave seamlessly through area parks, and 45% of commuters to the university ride bikes. There’s also the Davis Bike Club, the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, and a fantastic DIY bicycle shop open to the public (Davis Bike Collective). If running is more your style, try to keep up with the Golden Valley Harriers!

Close To Everything

The close proximity to the university as well as the city makes UC Davis West Village one of the best places to live. The Davis Farmers Market is nearby with ready-made desserts and meals, live music, and fresh produce from farms in the region. Or take a trip to the California Raptor Center to meet fascinating birds of prey and learn about falcons, eagles, harriers, hawks, owls and more. And don’t forget to stop by Häagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven, which promotes education and observation of honey bees, as well as provides resources to local bee pollinators.

Design and Construction Management

Green West Village

The Green at West Village

The green: project renderings, about this project.

To support our strong sense of community, offer students multiple options for living on campus and provide them easy access to academic resources, UC Davis is engaged in the most ambitious student housing construction initiative in its history.

The Green at West Village, Transfer Student Housing Project affirms UC Davis' committed to providing housing for 100 percent of any growth in new student enrollment. This 34-acre, zero-net-energy project – complete with a 5.5-Megawatt solar canopy atop surface parking lots – will provide housing for approximately 3,300 students among nine four-story apartment buildings with indoor and outdoor community space and recreational fields. In addition, a 10,000 square foot community building will house a fitness center, multipurpose room and student support services.

Financed by the sale of the largest-ever, tax-exempt bond issue for a single student housing project in the country – this project will be constructed through a public-private partnership between UC Davis, Collegiate Housing Foundation (a 501c3 nonprofit) and University Student Living of New Jersey.

A UC Davis planned zero net energy neighborhood

West Village Neighborhood

UC Davis West Village is a 180 acre mixed use neighborhood integrating student, faculty and staff housing and educational and research facilities, all centered on a civic Village Square.  It is a distinctive place to live in a pedestrian oriented, bike-friendly energy efficient environment. With over 10 megawatts of solar-generated electricity, the community is one of the largest planned “zero net energy” communities in the United States.

As a model in  public-private partnership s , the university and private developers  have accomplished together what neither could achieve alone.  Sol at West Village  is owned and managed by Landmark Properties, and is home to 2,300+ students, faculty and staff.  The project includes 663 apartments, 42,500 square feet of commercial space, two recreation centers, and study facilities. The Green at West Village  is owned by Collegiate Housing Foundation and operated by Michaels Student Living.  The project is currently under construction, with a first phase of housing for a 1,000 student occupancy in Fall 2020.  The balance of the project will accommodate 2,300 more students in Fall 2021.  The Green will total approximately 1,250 apartments, and include a 2 acre recreational field, community center and many study lounges.

UC Davis West Village hosts the first community college center located on a University of California campus.  The inclusion of Sacramento City College Davis Center in West Village is an important component of a long partnership between the Los Rios Community College District and UC Davis.

UC Davis’s first Energy Hub is a prototype for innovation in sustainability and future campus innovation hubs. Located in commercial space surrounding the Village Square, the Energy Hub is home to the campus’s energy research centers, where they utilize the living laboratory of UC Davis West Village while fostering interactions with the private sector in the area of energy research.

The Green at West Village

the green at west village tour

The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) recently hosted a grand opening for The Green at West Village, which includes 1.3 million square feet of student housing and amenity space. The $575 million project adds nearly 3,300 beds to the campus in apartment style units, helping the University toward its goal to house 50 percent of its student population. Phase I opened in September 2020.

The Michaels Organization was the project developer, working with UC Davis in a public-private partnership. Global design firm Stantec provided architecture and interior design, buildings engineering, ICT, fire protection, acoustics, and landscape architecture services. CBG Building Company was the general contractor. All project costs are coming from the proceeds of a tax-exempt bond sale—the largest bond sale ever for a student housing project in the US.

Situated on 35 acres, the project includes nine four-story apartment buildings along with indoor and outdoor community space and recreational fields. A 10,000-square-foot community building houses a fitness center, multipurpose room, and support services.

Sustainability was a driving force for The Green at West Village. With its expansive solar electric arrays, The Green contributes to the overall neighborhood goal of net-zero energy annually, as the project will generate as much energy as it uses within a year. In addition to the solar facilities, the design encourages bicycle commuting for students. There is a designated bike-parking area for each bed in the complex—nearly 3,300—which supports reduced areas for car parking.

“It was truly exciting to be part of an integrated team that helped UC Davis realize its housing goals, which sets the standard for the University of California system,” said Aris Garrison, Stantec design architect. “The objective to ‘make the best, for the most, for the least’ drove the design decisions. It’s inspiring to see the finished product, which demonstrates what is possible when public and private sectors work together.”

The housing project includes studios, as well as one, two, three, and four-bedroom apartments. Each apartment has furnished bedroom and living spaces, bathrooms, full kitchens, and common spaces. There are also social and study areas on each apartment building floor.

The apartment community will be operated by Michaels Student Living Management. Collegiate Housing Foundation will hold the ground lease with the University of California. UC Davis Student Housing and Dining Services will provide marketing, leasing, and on-site residence life support services.

Chancellor may, leshelle may tell their own dorm stories on ‘thursday thoughts’.

Chancellor Gary S. May and LeShelle May push a cart while helping students move in to campus housing.

Updated 3:30 p.m. Sept. 15: Chancellor Gary S. May and LeShelle May rolled up their (short) sleeves this week, helping some of the 6,500 new and returning students who are moving into the residence halls this fall. They spent Tuesday at Tercero, pushing full carts and introducing themselves to unsuspecting families.

Chancellor Gary S. May takes a blue bag from a student during Moove-In.

They took a break from helping new and returning residents to record this week’s episode of Thursday Thoughts , answering questions in their Moove-In gear:

Today is the last day of Moove-In on campus. In all, 8,800 students were expected to move into residence halls and apartments.

Original article, posted Sept. 9, by Cody Kitaura, with photos by Gregory Urquiaga:

Moove-In Begins at The Green

About 2,300 students have joined the roughly 1,000 already living in apartments at The Green at West Village, with thousands more new on-campus residents on their way next week. Moove-In, UC Davis’ take on move-in weekend, was held for The Green Sept. 1 and 2.

The day started with families unloading cars.

People unload a car at The Green

As in past years, campus leaders help students move into their new residence halls or apartments. At The Green, Chancellor Gary S. May and Mike Sheehan, associate vice chancellor for Housing, Dining and Divisional Operations, were on hand to unload boxes, push carts, give directions and otherwise help students settle in.

Chancellor Gary S. May and Mike Sheehan stand in front of empty moving carts.

There was plenty for them to do as they helped families lift, stack, push and carry.

The Green is home to the Transfer Student Housing Program, but is also open to any other undergraduate. It has layouts ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments, and this week was recognized as one of the Sacramento Business Journal’s Best Real Estate Projects of the Year .

Chancellor Gary S. May's reflection is visible in a mirror as a student moves into The Green.

The next round of students moving in to campus housing will begin Tuesday (Sept. 13). This fall, about 6,500 new and returning students will move into residence halls.
