The Jackson 5 was one of my very first experiences to pop music and not at all a bad place to start. Their 20th Century Masters was the first cd I ever owned and I still cherish it to this day. I was obsessed with the Jackson Five. I took that cd with me every where I went. The scuffs and cracks on the case are proof of it.

The music of the Jackson 5 was not the only thing that impressed me about this group. They were obviously remarkable singers, but they were also possibly the best dancers to hit the stage in the 70s. I was so inspired by their live performances that I nearly embarrassed myself in the third grade in attempting to lip synch and dance at a talent show to the song “ABC”.

I quickly learned that their is no emulating their performance. They are a one of a kind act and an inspiration to see in action. They had mastered the art of singing before they reached adulthood and even after their disbandment they continued to develop their talents to whole new levels. When the Jacksons were together they were unstoppable. They had an utterly charming stage presence and their vocal performances and choreography were impeccable. Considering they were family their was a strong feeling of universal intimacy and a precise awareness of each others strengths and weaknesses. Between the five members, the Jacksons could hit about any note possible. Tito and Jermaine were also talented musicians and played lead guitar and bass respectively. Michael had the voice of the century and could hit the highest notes in the Jackson catalogue with out the slightest waver.

The Jackson 5 set the mold for countless of pop groups to come (Boyz II Men, N’Sync etc...) and have been a huge influence on dance music of all kinds. The euro house group Justice recorded their biggest hit “D.A.N.C.E.” as a direct homage to the Jackson 5.The Jacksons still have not stopped inspiring fans and musicians and despite their disbandment their studio recordings and live performances will without a doubt stand the test of time.

August 11, 1969 : Diana Ross invites 300 of her and Berry Gordy’s closest friends and business associates to meet the Jackson 5 at a private showcase at Daisy’s Disco 326 Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills. The Jackson 5 perform Motown hits such as “Who’s Loving You” and Disney classics like “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”. Afterwards, a Motown press releasedis distributed to everyone in attendance. Michael and his brothers talk to local reporters and meet Bob Jones, a Motown PR who will prove significant in his solo career. 

August 22, 1969 :  In their first nationally TV appearance, The Jackson 5 perform “It’s Your Thing” at the Miss Black America Pageant in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

October 18, 1969 :  Diana Ross & The Supremes introduce the Jackson 5 on ABC’s Hollywood Palace Special where they perform Sing A Simple Song, Can You Remember, I want You Back and There Was A Time (with Diana Ross & Sammy Davis Jr).

December 14, 1969 :   The Jackson 5 appear on The Ed Sullivan Show where they perform Stand, Who’s Loving You and I Want You Back. Diana Ross is in the audience and she takes credit for discovering them.

December 1969  : The Jackson 5 perform I Want You Back on the Joey Bishop Show.

January 31, 1970 :  The Jackson 5 perform I Want You Back on the Andy Williams Show.

February 21, 1970 :  The Jackson 5 perform I Want You Back, ABC and a medley of Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah/There Was A Time on American Bandstand hosted by Dick Clark.

June 10, 1970 :  The Jackson 5 perform The Love You Save & ABC on the Groovy Show TV program in Los Angeles.

September 17, 1970 :  The J5 perform The Love You Save, Shortnin Bread, Let It be & I’ll Be There at the Jim Nabors Show.

November 15, 1970 :  The Jackson 5 attend the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles where they are are presented with their first Image Award for Best Singing Group of the year.

January 31, 1971:  The Jackson 5 return to Gary ( Indiana ) for the first time to play two benefits concerts for for Mayor Richard Hatcher’s re-election campaign at Westside High School and they receive the key to the city. A ceremony is held outside their former home at 2300 Jackson Street. The event is filmed for a TV Special.

March 29, 1971 :  The Jackson 5 are guests on The Stephanie Edwards Show where they chat and listen to their new single Never Can Say Goodbye.

April 18, 1971 :  The Jackson 5 appear with Diana Ross on her first solo TV Special. They perform Mama’s Pearl/Walk On/The Love You Save, ), I’ll Be There and Feelin’ Alright (with Diana) , It Was a Very Good Year (Spoof by Michael) a skit with Bill Cosby.

September 16, 1971 : “ Goin’ Back To Indiana”, the Jackson 5 first TV Special is aired on ABC. The special includes the group performing their hits, acting in skits with guest Bill Cosby and the Smothers Brothers and footage of the celebration filmed in their hometown of Gary back in January.

November 14, 1971 :  The Jackson 5 perform a medley of I Want You Back/ABC/The Love You Save, Never Can Say Goodbye + a skit on the Flip Wilson Show.

November 21, 1971  : The Jackson 5 attend the NAACP Image Awards where they are presetend with an award for Best Singing Group Of The Year.

March 1, 1972 :  The Jackson 5 perform Sugar Daddy, Got To Be There & Brand New Thing (with Randy) at the Hellzapoppin’ TV Special.

June 5, 1972 :  Michael appears as the bachelor at The Dating Game TV show and chooses Latanya Simmons as bachelorette and he performs “Rockin Robin”.

July 1, 1972 :  Michael makes a solo appearance in a special American Bandstand show devoted to him. He performs Rockin Robin, Ben, I Wanna Be Where You Are and at the end he’s joined by the Jackson 5 to perform Lookin’ Through The Windows.

September 15, 1972 :  The Jackson 5 perform Lookin’ Through The Windows and Michael performs Ben at the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.

October 26, 1972 :  The Jackson 5 perform Ain’t Nothin’ Like The Real Thing and Jermaine performs That’s How Love Goes at the Flip Wilson Show.

November 4, 1972 :  In the US, Soul Train Show airs a Jackson Five special where they perform “I Want You Back”, “Lookin’ Through The Windows” & “Corner Of The Sky”. Jermaine performs “That’s How Love Goes” & “Daddy’s Home”. Michael performs “Ben”.

November 5, 1972 :   In The UK the Royal Variety Performance featuring the J5 is aired on the BBC. The group sings I Want You Back, Ben, Daydreamer, ABC, I’ll Be There, Stop The Love You Save & Never Can Say Goodbye

November 9, 1972 :  The Jackson 5 perform Looking Through The Windows & Rockin Robin an british TV show Top Of The Pops.

November 18, 1972  : The Jackson 5 attend and perform at the NAACP Image Award ceremony at the Hollywood Paladium in Los Angeles. For the third consecutive year, the group is présented with the NAACP’s Image Award for Male Group Of The Year. Michael poses for pictures with Coretta Scott King (Martin Luther King’s widow) and Redd Foxx.

January 10, 1973 :  The Jackson 5 appear on the Dick Cavett Show.

March 27, 1973 :  Michael performs Ben at the Academy Awards (the song is nominated as best song for a film)

September 26, 1973 :  The Jackson 5 perform Get It Together & Dancing Machine at the Bob Hope Special.

January 10, 1974 :  One More Chance, a Jackson 5 TV Special is aired on CBS. The group performs Get It Together + a medley of I Want You Back/ABC/I’ll Be There/Ben/Daddy’s Home/Never Can Say Goodbye/The Love You Save and another medley Up a Lazy River/Opus One (with the Mills Brothers)

January 30, 1974 :  The Jackson 5 perform Dancing Machine at the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.

February 19, 1974 :  Michael appears at the first annual American Music Awards to present awards with Donny Osmond to The Temptations and with Donny Osmond, Ricky Segal and Ricky Allen to the Carpenters.

March 2, 1974 :  The Jackson 5 present an award to Gladys Knight & The Pips during the Grammy Awards held at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

March 1, 1975 :  The Jackson 5 are nominated for Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance – Duo, Group Or Chorus with “Dancing Machine” at the 17th Grammy Awards ceremony held at Uris Theater in New York. Michael attends the ceremony and poses for pictures with Stevie Wonder.

March 16, 1975 :  The Jackson 5 appear on the Cher TV show. They are introduced by Janet and they perform I Am Love + a skit called The World Is a Mess and finally Cher joins the group to perform a medley of I Want You Back/I’ll Be There/Never Can Say Goodbye/The Love You Save/Dancing Machine.

July 1975 :  The Jackson 5 perform Forever Came Today & Body Language at the Carol Burnett Show without Jermaine!

October 5, 1975 :  The J5 perform Forever Came Today, All I Do Is Think Of You, One Day In Your Life, Just A Little Bit Of You & We’ve Got Forever at the Soul Train Show.

January 21, 1976 :  The Jackson 5 perform “Forever Came Today” and “Body Language ” on the Carol Burnett Show (taped at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.

January 31, 1976 :  Michael accepts an award on behalf of Gladys Knight & The Pips at the American Music Awards and he also presents an award to Aretha Franklin with David Soul.

February 10, 1976  : The Jackson 5 & Joe arrivein Manila, Philippines.  They give a press conference and they stay at the Manilla Hilton Hotel.To promote their concerts, they appear in the television show called Student Canteen presented on Channel 7 at noon by Eddie Ilarde, Bobby Ledesma and Coney Reye. Michael performs Ben on the TV show.

The TV special and soundtrack consists of multiple in-studio live performances, skits and half of the Jackson 5’s concert in Indiana on May 29, 1971. The other half of the live show was omitted, and some songs were also edited upon the release. Over the years, a couple of tracks from the concert have been released (such as “Who’s Lovin’ You” and “Mama’s Pearl”) but there hasn’t been any official release of their full show from that evening. Goin’ Back to Indiana : Released on September 29, 1971

Goin’ Back to Indiana is a live/soundtrack album by the Jackson 5 for Motown Records, taken from their September 16, 1971 ABC TV special of the same name. It is the Jackson 5’s sixth album overall, and was released on September 29, 1971. The Goin’ Back to Indiana television special featured comedians Bill Cosby and Tommy Smothers, singers Bobby Darin and Diana Ross, football players Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier and Ben Davidson, and basketball stars Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor, and Elvin Hayes. It also featured tracks recorded by the Jackson 5 during their May 29 “homecoming” concert at the Coliseum in Indianapolis, hence the show title.

The Jackson 5 in Japan, also known as In Japan!, is the first live album released by the Jackson 5, culled from a live concert held in Japan in 1973. It was released in the UK in 1986 as Michael Jackson with the Jackson 5 Live; Motown did not release the album in the United States until a limited-edition version was released in 2004, via specialty reissue label Hip-O Select. A quadrophonic mix was released in Japan in 1975, marking an early release of the band’s material in surround sound. The album sold over a million copies worldwide.

Live at the Forum is a live album by American family musical group the Jackson 5. It was released on June 21, 2010. The live tracks contained in the album were mostly recorded on June 20, 1970 and August 26, 1972, during concerts at The Forum, in Inglewood, California. The 1970 concert was a record-breaking show of over 18,000 attending, with the group only having released two studio albums and a couple of singles out up to that point. This concert is an example of the group’s very early part of their career, on their first tour.

Michael Jackson was $500 million in debt when he died, according to court filing

LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson was more than $500 million in debt in 2009 when he died ahead of a planned concert tour, according to new court documents.

The deep financial hole the “King of Pop” found himself in was detailed in a petition the executors of his estate filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

“At the time of Michael Jackson’s death, Michael Jackson’s most significant assets were subject to more than $500 million of debt and creditors’ claims, with some of the debt accruing interest at extremely high interest rates, and some debt in default,” the filing said.

Before he died on June 25, 2009, Jackson was preparing to launch a concert tour called This Is It.

The tour had been planned as a colossal 50-show engagement at London’s O2 Arena.

He died close to the eve of the tour, which left his estate financially liable for $40 million to the tour promoter, AEG, the filing said.

The filing requests that money from Jackson's estate be used to reimburse the executors’ attorneys for legal services and other expenses in 2018.

Jackson was also facing lawsuits in several states and countries when he died, the petition said. More than 65 creditors’ claims had been filed, which prompted more lawsuits, the filing said.

The executors, however, have settled or disposed of most of the creditors’ claims and litigation, the filing said.

Jackson died at his Los Angeles mansion at age 50 of acute propofol intoxication. His physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for providing the drug.

Jackson’s illustrious career included 13 Grammy Awards, two inductions into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame and sales upward of 400 million records.

The “King of Pop” died of cardiac arrest caused by “acute propofol intoxication” 15 years ago at the age of 50.

The reimbursement includes “legal, negotiating and various other operating expenses,” per the filing.

Jackson had “more than half a dozen lawsuits pending worldwide” at the time of his death, the petition reads.

“The Executors were able to renegotiate and restructure financing arrangements that existed at the time of Michael’s death, at substantially reduced interest rates, enabling the Estate to avoid the loss of any assets to the lenders and ultimately to satisfy the encumbrances that existed at the time of Michael’s death,” court documents read.

From July to December 2018, several firms are seeking over $3.5 million in legal fees for services rendered during that time.

“Although the Executors have eliminated the Estate’s debt, have resolved virtually all of the creditors’ claims and litigation, and have successfully solidified the MJJ business as a significant entity in the music industry, there remain challenging business, tax and legal issues that the Executors and their counsel continue to deal with,” the filing reads.

“The Executors have faced extraordinarily challenging circumstances.”

The Post has reached out to the legal team for Jackson’s estate for comment.

The Five: Young phenoms looking to turn heads, contend at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Youth and precocity will be on display at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

But that’s an understatement.

He won both the Junior PGA Championship and the Junior PLAYERS Championship last year and was the youngest player to ever be named the American Junior Golf Association’s Player of the Year. (Woods is the only other player to win the award before turning 16.)

"Hopefully he has fun and doesn't beat me, but does well," said Min Woo Lee.

Here are five other phenoms in the field at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Neal Shipley

Shipley, who will make his non-major PGA TOUR debut in Detroit, was the 2022 Pennsylvania Amateur champ but was not very well known until last summer. That’s when he went on a heater that saw him finish runner-up in a handful of big amateur tournaments, biggest among them the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills in Denver, where he lost to Nick Dunlap in the final.

That result got Shipley, who was seeded 47th at Cherry Hills, into this year’s Masters and U.S. Open. The rest, as they say, is history, as Shipley again rose to the occasion at the Masters, where he played the final round with Tiger Woods on the way to earning low am honors. At the U.S. Open, he battled Florida State’s Luke Clanton down to the wire to capture low am yet again.

Shipley, 23, is just the sixth player to win low amateur at both the Masters and the U.S. Open, and the first to achieve the double since Viktor Hovland in 2019. Shipley made his pro debut on PGA TOUR Americas last week and tied for ninth at The Beachlands Victoria Open.

“It's been wild,” he said at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. “It's been something that maybe three, four years ago I didn't think was possible, and to accomplish all this has just been phenomenal. Just the stuff of dreams really as an amateur to do everything I've done.

“I think I've checked all the boxes now,” he added.

Even better, Shipley threw out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers’ home game Monday night.

Jackson Koivun

It’s a foregone conclusion that Auburn standout Koivun will become the second player (after Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent) to earn his PGA TOUR card via PGA TOUR Accelerated , the program by which elite college players are given points for exemplary play in amateur and collegiate events as well as major championships and, as with this week, PGA TOUR events.

Koivun, who just became the first player ever to sweep college golf’s three national Player of the Year awards – the Haskins, the Hogan, and the Nicklaus – and the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman award in the same season, is already at 16 points. He needs 20 for his TOUR card.

Making the cut at the Rocket Mortgage this week would earn him one point, while a top-10 finish would net him two. Koivun, who led Auburn to the NCAA team title while finishing second as an individual, made his first PGA TOUR start at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. He made the cut, earning another point, and finished 52nd.

The second-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Koivun, 19, will get yet another point for playing in the Palmer Cup next month, with more points on offer at the U.S. Amateur and elsewhere. With three college seasons still ahead of him, the math favors Koivun. Not bad, considering that PGA TOUR models showed only three people would have reached 20 points in Accelerated over the last decade: Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, and Patrick Rodgers.

Luke Clanton

Clanton, a rising junior at Florida State University , is coming off a sensational sophomore year in which he recorded the lowest single-season stroke average in FSU history, 69.33. (Keep in mind, FSU golf alumni include five-time major champion Brooks Koepka.) Clanton, who is from Hialeah, Florida, also won three times in the spring and led the Seminoles all the way to the NCAA Championship final, where they lost to Auburn.

On the back of all that, Clanton, 20, got through his U.S. Open sectional and at Pinehurst battled to the very end for low am. Trailing playing partner Neal Shipley by one going into the last hole, Clanton found the pine straw right of the 18th fairway but hit a sensational approach from 129 yards, his ball barely sliding past the hole before stopping 6 feet away. Although he three-putted from there, giving low am honors to Shipley, Clanton had merely reminded him of his prowess.

“He really made it tough on me,” Shipley said. “He's got a lot of good golf left, and you're going to be seeing him out here again very soon. He's such a quality player.”

One place we’ll be seeing Clanton, in addition to Detroit, is the 2025 Valspar Championship since he won the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, one of three straight victories in the spring.

And as if things weren’t already looking rosy enough for Clanton and the golf program in Tallahassee, FSU golf products John Pak and Frederik Kjettrup just won tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR Americas last weekend.

The fourth-ranked amateur in the world, the University of Virginia’s James was named NCAA Outstanding Freshman of the Year in 2023 after a five-win season.

In his sophomore season, which he had just finished, James, 21, became the first UVA male golfer to be a two-time First-Team All-American. At the NCAA Championship, he was the only player in the field to post a top-10 finish (T2) for the second straight year.

Like Clanton and Shipley, James qualified for the recent U.S. Open at Pinehurst, where the USGA put him in a group with fellow UVA golf products Denny McCarthy and Ben Kohles. (James, playing in his first major, missed the cut by a shot.)

James, from Milford, Connecticut, finished his junior career as AJGA and Golfweek No. 1.

Michael Thorbjornsen

Thorbjornsen, a past winner of the Drive, Chip & Putt at Augusta National, is a Tiger Woods fan who also attended Stanford. Thorbjornsen first announced himself when playing on a sponsor exemption, he contended on Sunday and ultimately finished fourth at the 2022 Travelers Championship. It was the second-best finish by an amateur in a PGA TOUR event since 2000.

His mother, Sandra, was a college golfer. His father, Thorbjorn, got intrigued by the science of the swing and became Michael’s coach. It worked. Thorbjornsen’s accomplishments include winning the U.S. Junior, defeating two-time PGA TOUR winner Akshay Bhatia in the final.

Although a scooter crash and a stress fracture in his back slowed his rise, Thorbjornsen, 22, still held off Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht to finish No. 1 in the PGA TOUR University Ranking and earn his PGA TOUR card for the rest of 2024 and 2025.

Stanford coach Conrad Ray said the big-hitting Thorbjornsen is a generational talent with the driver, and added, “Stressful situations don’t seem to affect him as much as other players.”

Michael Jackson Died With $500 Million in Debt

Jackson owed about $40 million to the tour promoter A.E.G. in 2009, his estate’s executors said in a court filing. They said all the debts have been eliminated.

Michael Jackson’s debts and creditor’s claims at the time of his death in 2009 totaled more than $500 million, according to a court filing by the pop superstar’s estate that provides details of his financial woes toward the end of his life.

Jackson owed about $40 million to the tour promoter A.E.G., according to the filing, which was made in Los Angeles County Superior Court this month and earlier reported by People magazine . The filing said that 65 creditors made claims against the singer after his death, some of which resulted in lawsuits, and that some of his debt had been “accruing interest at extremely high interest rates.”

A representative for the Jackson estate, which is executed by John Branca and John McClain, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The estate filed the court papers as a request to authorize the payment of about $3.5 million to several legal firms for their work in the second half of 2018.

In the court filing, the executors say that they have eliminated the estate’s debt and that almost all of the creditors’ claims and litigation have been resolved.

Jackson earned hundreds of millions of dollars throughout the 1980s and 1990s as the creator of some of the biggest-selling albums of all time, along with dazzling concert tours that filled stadiums around the world. He bought the Beatles’ song catalog for $47.5 million in 1985 and later sold it to Sony/ATV Music in exchange for a 50 percent share in the company. Sony bought back the estate’s share for $750 million in 2016.

But when Jackson died at the age of 50, shortly before he was supposed to embark on a live residency called This Is It, he left behind a tangled web of assets and liabilities .

Jackson was famous for his lavish lifestyle and spent money with abandon. He incurred millions of dollars in debt from his Neverland Ranch estate in Southern California and had a penchant for expensive art, jewelry and private jets. He was paying more than $30 million annually on interest payments, a forensic accountant testified during a 2013 wrongful-death trial in which A.E.G. prevailed .

The Jackson estate is currently in a dispute with the I.R.S. after a tax audit. In a separate court filing this year , the estate said that the federal agency accused it of undervaluing its assets and said it owed “an additional $700 million in taxes and penalties.”

2025 Georgia Tech Wide Receiver Target Landon Roldan Makes College Decision

Things had been trending this way for a little bit, but Georgia Tech lost out on an in-state wide receiver today.

2025 wide receiver Landon Roldan, who plays at North Oconee High School in Georgia, comitted to Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs today. Roldan took official visits to both Georgia Tech and Georgia this summer, but he is choosing to commit to the Bulldogs today.

While there is still a long way to go, this is shaping up to be one of Georgia Tech's best classes in years. The Yellow Jackets have a top-20 class and are No. 2 in the ACC right now, behind only Clemson. Brent Key and his staff have done a great job of recruiting the state of Georgia and their work is paying off with this class right now.

Roldan is a three-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite, ranking as the No. 632 prospect in the country, the No. 97 wide receiver, and the No. 68 player in the state of Georgia. His other offers include Vanderbilt, Army, Navy, and Central Michigan.

The dead period has officially begun in the world of college football recruiting. That does not mean that prospects can't make commitments, but official visits are over for the summer and Georgia Tech just finished off a great month of recruiting that saw them get 16 commits and vault them into the top 20 nationally in recruiting rankings.

Last week, Georgia Tech was No. 5 in the ACC recruiting rankings, but now they have jumped up to the No. 2 spot in the conference. The Yellow Jackets have a real shot at landing a top five class in the conference at the current pace that they are on.
