Permission to Land (Down Under): The Darkness Announce Australian Tour

The english glam rockers are heading to the east coast next year.

The Darkness

Gareth Parker

The Darkness are coming to Australia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their seminal debut album.

The ‘Let There Be Rock’ tour will see the English glam rockers celebrate the landmark anniversary of Permission to Land , which was a surprise success on the UK charts in 2003. After debuting at number two, the album eventually took the top spot and held it for weeks, going on to sell over one million records in the band’s home country.

Permission to Land featured fan favourites (and enduring karaoke classics) such as “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” and “Love Is Only a Feeling”, which are sure to be sung with relish when The Darkness perform in Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney in February of next year (see full dates below).

The Darkness will be supported by some of Australia’s finest rock names in DZ Deathrays, Cry Club, as well as You Am I performing their “The Majesty of Tap” Spinal Tap tribute show. DJs Eleven & Denim will also appear at each show.

“When Permission to Land landed twenty short years ago. we were bathed in shock and awe. As if by magic, rock wasn’t dead! Fun wasn’t banned! And spandex was almost acceptable again,” says frontman Justin Hawkins. “Well, guess what? Twenty years on, the same rules apply. Bring on the next twenty!”

Around since the early ’00s, The Darkness have continued to sell out tours across the globe over the past two decades, including their  Motorheart  album tour in 2022.

The Darkness are coming back to Australia this October

One member of The Darkness holds a dog, one has his shirt open and wears a hunting cap, three wear sunglasses

  • X (formerly Twitter)

They'll play six shows around the country.

Glam rock revivalists The Darkness are regular Australian visitors, and were blowing minds down here in March 2020 following the release of their sixth album Easter Is Cancelled .

Sadly that tour was never completed (for reasons you already know) which means the band are even more excited to bring their over-the-top live show back to Australia this October.

In case you've forgotten the attitude this band boasts, frontman Justin Hawkins has released a typically waggish statement/poem as something of a reminder.

"Our last ill-fated Antipodean excursion in 2020 was cruelly truncated. We've spent 2.5 years deflated.

"Our appetite for rock has largely gone unsated. Well, for too long you have waited, to witness the atmosphere created, in the UK, Ireland, Canada and the Unite Stated, by us, rock’s most underrated.

"I am truly elated to announce that we shall return in October to deliver our solid gold plated ROCK - see you there!"

The Darkness released their seventh LP Motorheart at the end of 2021 and all this new music, mixed with a longer than usual absence from our shores will undoubtedly make for some high-energy shows, as if they weren't already going to be that way.

Catch The Darkness playing the following shows this October. Tickets are on sale from 11am local time Tuesday 17 May.

Wednesday 12 October – The Forum, Melbourne Friday 14 October – Astor Theatre, Perth Saturday 15 October – Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide Sunday 16 October – Enmore Theatre, Sydney Tuesday 18 October – Kambri, Canberra Wednesday 19 October – The Tivoli, Brisbane

Multi-platinum UK rock icons The Darkness will be returning to Australia and New Zealand this October, playing shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland and Wellington.

Brimming with their trademark blazing guitar riffs and solos, soaring falsetto and immeasurable rock ‘n’ roll extravagance, The Darkness will be operating at their loosest and most extroverted frequency in celebration of their seventh album,  Motorheart , released in November last year.

Fans will be treated to new songs from the band’s new album Motorheart, along with slaying their award-winning, platinum-selling hit singles including ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ and ‘Love Is Only A Feeling’- a true spectacle to behold.

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews  here .

Arriving just two years after their previous effort,  Easter Is Cancelled ,  Motorheart  was written and recorded amid the uncertainty of UK’s ever-changing pandemic restrictions, and heavily plays to the band’s founding ethos as a fun and fresh rock ‘n’ roll band that you can’t take too seriously.

The Australian tour dates will see the band pick up where they left off in 2020, having been forced to cancel dates in Melbourne and Brisbane mid-way through their ‘Easter Is Cancelled’ tour which saw them perform in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide just as the pandemic began to take hold.

Justin Hawkins says of their imminent return, “Our last ill fated Antipodean excursion in 2020 was cruelly truncated. We’ve spent 2.5 years deflated. Our appetite for Rock has largely gone unsated. Well, for too long you have waited, to witness the atmosphere created, in the Uk, Ireland, Canada and the Unite Stated, by us, Rock’s most underrated. and I am truly elated to announce that we shall return in October to deliver our solid gold plated ROCK – see you there!”

Justin Hawkin’s insane shrill scream is the stuff of legend and they know a thing or two about making an anthem – ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ will go down in rock ‘n’ roll history.

INTERVIEW: The Darkness – Dan Hawkins talks Australian Tour October 2022 and cooks beef stew!

29 September 2022 Mark Diggins

Dan Hawkins is not just a great guitarist and producer he’s also an enthusiastic cook.  This year it’s a possibly faux-Vegan beef stew, last year it was roast potatoes… On the eve of the highly anticipated and almost completely sold out Australian Tour Mark chats with Dan Hawkins about cooking, painting, dusting, the supernatural and the prevalence of great falsettos in a Darkness live audience. Oh and also some stuff about The Darkness Australian Tour and the last album ‘Motorheart’ too.

You can catch the darkness in australia  in october  (if there are any tickets left) and if you all go out and buy the record dan can summon me to cook for him when he gets home….

Dan: Hello! How’s it going Mark?

Mark: Not too bad Dan, we do get to talk every couple of years so it must be that time!

Dan: If it’s not a tour it’s a record! (laughs) It comes around so fast! (laughs)

Mark: (laughs) I know, I think it’s both this time!  I know you always answer any question put to you so today’s question is why does almost every Rock Star I talk to these days have an i-phone?

Dan: Well it’s Apple I think, Apple made a beeline for musicians and creatives way back in the 80’s and it’s stuck ever since. It’s because their musical interfaces are idiot proof!  That’s musicians for you, we’re idiots! Easy to hook! ( There’s a c lanking of pans in the background )

Mark: Are you tidying up or washing up?

Dan: Sorry about that Mark, I was just getting a dish out, I’m just cooking a beef stew! I must add though, it’s a Vegan beef stew.

Mark: A Vegan beef stew? Sounds good, I’ll have a go at that one. I remember last time we almost managed to get your perfect roast potatoes recipe but not quite.

Dan: (laughs) Oh no! Oh God history is repeating itself! I seem to remember that three years ago I was painting the kitchen while doing a heap of interviews and looking around now I might get the paint brush out!

Mark: (laughs) Go on for old times’ sake!

Dan: (laughs) By the looks of it, it hasn’t been cleaned in three years either, there’s loads of cobwebs up there. In fact I’ve never actually looked up there before.

Mark: (laughs) Well I’ll just jot that down, ‘remind Dan to look up at the ceiling next time’ there’s it’s locked in.

Dan: (laughs) Please!

the darkness tour australia 2022

Mark: ‘Motorheart’ was one of my albums of 2021 and you’re finally bringing it Downunder! Before we get to that though there is talk over here of The Darkness being some sort of prophets, or harbingers of doom?

Dan: Is that because of your theory of the ‘Easter is Cancelled’ thing?

Mark: (laughs) Yes, and I’m still trying to work out what ‘Motorheart’ means for us all, but I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough!

Dan: Yeah, maybe! (laughs) The weird thing with Easter is Cancelled is that we were out touring in the very, very early days of Covid. I think we might have even gone through Italy when it first kicked off in Milan so in a way we feel like we might have been the superspreading event that kind of took it all over Europe the first time round.

Mark: (laughs)

Dan: So it’s not that we saw it in our minds, it’s more that we probably actually made it happen. Sorry everyone.

Mark: That does bring in all kinds of other space-time continuum theories too.

Dan: (laughs)

Mark: You have already been pretty busy this year, you’re certainly packing it all in and making up for the lean times of Covid. I can’t think of a European Summer Festival you haven’t been on!

Dan: Yeah this has been one of the busiest Festival seasons we’ve ever had, and it’s still going, we’ve still got Festivals, though not Summer Festivals admittedly, booked all the way to November! It’s been relentless, but then we’ve got three years to make up for. ( Dan is definitely peeling something, at a push I’d say potatoes )

Mark: Certainly a lot happening!

Dan: ( A little chopping in the background )

Mark: I love the production on ‘Motorheart’ I think you’ve done a wonderful job there channeling your inner Mutt Lange I think!

Dan: Thank you, he’s a hero of mine. He’s one of those producers who leaves no stone unturned production-wise – he’s definitely of the ‘kitchen sink’ mentality and one of my other heroes Roy Thomas Baker was a bit like that as well. So I guess I’m trying to follow in their footsteps somewhat, trying to anyway. (laughs)

Mark: You got to work with Roy back in the day didn’t you?

Dan: I did ( He’s definitely doing the onions now ) I would say he was my mentor for about a year and a half, and he helped me design and build my studio in Norfolk that we record in. He taught me how to EQ, he taught me so much stuff and we became really good friends and I even stayed with him at his house after we mixed the second album ‘One Way Ticket’ out near some Lake in L.A. and he was teaching me how to listen really to the finished masterings ( Yep, definitely slicing more onions ) and what to look out for and the importance of those last steps of adjustment on the record.  And he was actually one of Mutt Lange’s mentors back in the day, I think they were at the same label or something?

Mark: And you’re really like the next generation coming through.

Dan: Well…

the darkness tour australia 2022

Mark: Well I’m going to call it, feel free to be self-effacing, but the record does sound great.

Dan: Thank you.

Mark: There’s some great ‘Progtastic’ moments on the record that I imagine came at least in part from an excess of time in the studio? I read a few stories about how you worked on this one – you on guitar and Rufus drumming in the other room working up the tunes? Is that how it came about.

Dan: ( There’s a pause, I imagine Dan is spicing the mix now ) Very much so. We wanted to make an album but I knew right from the off it was going to be a real challenge with not being able to see each other during the making of it. And we were under real time pressure to finish it too because there was such a long lead time for vinyl that we were told the final mastered version would need to be handed in at least eight months before release date! So we’re going hell for leather trying to get it done trying to gauge roughly what the release window would be – the earliest one after Covid we could release in.

Mark: That’s crazy.

Dan: I know. We were kind of fighting for our lives a bit really because a small business like ours that loses all business for two years is a real challenge, and we’re quite often we’re sailing close to the wind as it is. So we knew we needed something good and that people didn’t want a bunch of blokes whingeing about being stuck indoors. So it was a case of saying “Right, we’ll only do really rocking stuff on this one. let’s not get over emotional on this one, it just needs to Rock really” So what we did was Rufus would come over – there was an entrance for the drum/live room that he would go in and I would stay in the control room and look through the glass.  And literally I’d start riffing and he’d start playing, and after maybe six hours we’d have a couple of songs – backing tracks really. I like to arrange backing tracks without knowing what the song is about, it’s fun that way and then Justin interprets it and does his thing and that’s it you know. And pretty much the whole album was that, I don’t think we even re-did too much. ‘Nobody Can See me Cry’ – that was the first take we did of that one Rufus and I and then most of them were like first half of this take, second of that. Then we’d sent them to Justin as a ‘rough’ and he’d sing on them and that would be it. (laughs) Literally it! ( He’s going through the cutlery drawer now )

Mark: Sounds productive.

Dan: And because we didn’t have any lyrical themes to work on as musicians and there was no lyrical feedback all we could do was make it interesting enough ( He’s at the sink now ) to inspire ourselves to finish these tunes. So we wanted to make them as interesting as possible and that’s where the ‘Prog’ element came in.

Mark: It’s worked out so well. I notice that one tour you’re playing ‘Welcome Tae Glasgae’…

Dan: Can you say that again I loved it! (laughs)

Mark: ‘It’s Love Jim’ and ‘Motorheart’ live, are you thinking of adding anything else in there, I love hearing the new stuff and I think ‘Sticky Situations’ is one I’d love to hear on the Tour.

Dan: Yeah, you know what that’s actually one of the ones I love, that’s one of my favourite ones to play live. That one comes across really good. When we were touring ‘Motorheart’ in the UK we would switch it up quite a lot so sometimes we would do five or six, and other times less, it all depended on the night, it was really suck it and see. ( There’s a strange regular clanking I’m not sure what it is, definitely stew related though ).

Mark: It’s always hard you always have to play the ones that venues get torn up for if you don’t.

Dan: (laughs) That’s right we have to admit and understand that a large portion of our audience, they don’t buy the records. If everyone that came to see us play live on Festivals and tours bought the record, well Mark, I’ll just say I wouldn’t be making my own beef stew now, I’d have someone in to do that for me!

Mark: You could fly me in to make you mine!

Dan: Exactly.

Mark: My beef stew is legendary.

Dan: (laughs) I had heard that, what’s the secret? Any tips?

Mark: Good stock Dan. It all boils down to that, good beef stock, not exactly great for the Vegans though, that’s hard. Maybe beet stock for Vegans?

Dan: Good stock…. I’m not going to lie to you Mark, this one might not actually be Vegan. ( There’s a splashing ) This doesn’t look… yeah, this is not a Vegan stew…

Mark: (laughs) Did you not follow the recipe?

Dan: Yeah, that’s what’s happened.

Mark: Parts of it might be Dan? Bits of it could be Vegan?

Dan: Yeah, the leek, I think the leek might not have been… you know round an animal…

the darkness tour australia 2022

Mark: So the Australian Tour is round the corner – you’re sounding great, Rufus is sounding great, Justin is sounding great and Frankie, he’s…

Dan: Sounding great?

Mark: I was going to say looking great, but he probably sounds great too!

Mark: You’re selling out too, you sold out Perth the other day which is nice.

Dan: It always surprises me, you always hope that these things will happen and that you’re promoted well and when that actually happens it’s really cool. We are going to be buzzing like we always are, but every time we come to Australia I can’t put my finger on it there’s just a thing… it’s almost as if we’re more Australian that we are… you know English I suppose.

Mark: (laughs) You’ll always be that little taste of England for me. I remember the first time you came over and played The Corner Hotel in Richmond, and we’re so glad you’ve been coming back ever since.  I think you’re getting better as you age like a fine wine or… a good beef stew.

Dan: (laughs) There’s time yet.

Mark: I did read somewhere that during the VIP Soundchecks you were getting people from the audience to come up on stage and play on a song. Is the quality a bit variable?

Dan: You know what we have had some great singer, it’s quite incredible how many powerful falsettos there are out there, I just wait and most of the time when they start I’m thinking “My God they can actually sing!”  A lot of powerful falsettos out there.

Mark: Our postman is one that comes to mind.

Dan: You’ll have to bring him down.

Mark: What’s the worst thing that can or has happened in that scenario?

Dan: I think the worst is when someone gets up to drum and they can’t play drums at all, they’ve maybe been to a few shows and they think it looks sort of easy and they’ll give it a go. But as any musician will tell you if the drums are all over the place, the whole thing is all over the place – that’s happened a few times. I’m stood there thinking ‘surely we’re playing different songs here?’

Mark: I’m sure it’s all good fun whatever happens!

Dan: We do try to make everyone feel comfortable on stage.

Mark: And we did all that whilst you made a beef stew!

Dan: I know. Can you hear it sizzling away? Can you hear it?

Mark: I can ( I’m pretty sure Dan is holding the phone to the stew ) I think I was there for the entire creation of that stew, you’ll have to save me a bit.

Dan: If you see a news report of a guitarist dying of food poisoning you’ll know what it was! I wasn’t paying attention (laughs) I might have put a can of bleach in there not beef stock! (laughs)

Mark: (laughs) It’s an easy mistake to make Dan, so many guitarists have gone that way!

Dan: (laughing) Bizarre cooking accidents!

Mark: We’re on the same page. (laughs) Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to The Rockpit, Dan, I’ll talk to you in another couple of years… actually no I won’t I’ll see you in a few weeks!

Dan: If I make it past second helpings I’ll see you at the gig Mark! Just remind me about those cobwebs in a couple of years’ time.

Mark: I’ll will, take care of yourself and stay safe!

Dan: Cheers, thank you, bye!

BRET MICHAELS: POISON Will 'Do Another Big Stadium And Arena Tour In 2025'

During a February 25 question-and-answer session aboard the Rock Legends Cruise XI , Bret Michaels spoke about POISON 's plans to regroup for more shows following the band's 2022 participation in "The Stadium Tour" alongside MÖTLEY CRÜE , DEF LEPPARD and Joan Jett . he said: "When we go back, I think in 2025, it's always been, to me, all-original POISON . We'll have C.C [ DeVille , guitar] and Bobby [ Dall , bass] and Rikki [ Rockett , drums] and myself and go do another big stadium tour and arena tour in 2025."

Regarding his motivation for going back out on the road with POISON after spending most of his time touring with his solo band, Bret said: "We've known each other since we've been in junior high school… I wouldn't be here without Bobby or Rikki or C.C. And then, as you go along, we've been together a long time — still great friends. If anyone saw 'The Stadium Tour' , that was a party. And when you're out there with that DEF LEPPARD and MÖTLEY and Joan , you're talking A-plus awesomeness. And we just came out and brought it.

"For me, what it is, we do about a couple of years solo, and then we'll go out and do 35 or 40 dates with POISON ," he explained. "And we set it up, we schedule it."

POISON 's long-delayed North American trek with DEF LEPPARD , MÖTLEY CRÜE and JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS was originally planned for 2020 and later moved to 2021 and then to 2022.

In 2018, POISON completed the "Nothin' But A Good Time" tour with CHEAP TRICK and POP EVIL .

POISON 's last album of new material was 2002's "Hollyweird" . An album of covers, "Poison'd" , followed in 2007.

Back in 2018, Dall said that POISON "should" be making a new studio album but claimed that he didn't know if it would happen. "I'm not going to bullshit you and say there's any [new music] in the process [of being made]," he told All That Shreds . "Would I like there to be? Yes. But, it's a matter of everyone having the time. Everybody in the band has other commitments. Some members have younger children than others. So between those two issues, it's difficult, and, you know, [there are] health issues as we get older. Should we be making a new record? Yes, definitely. But will it happen? I don't know."

In a 2017 interview, Rikki acknowledged that part of the reason the band hasn't been motivated to work on new music has been the fact that fans rarely show interest in hearing fresh material performed live when classic rock groups go on tour. "We could write the second coming of 'Talk Dirty To Me' , and I don't know if people wanna hear it or not, and that's a frustrating thing; it really is," he said. " AEROSMITH was able to do it, but not everybody is. I mean, even THE ROLLING STONES have had problems with that in the last few years. So… I don't know. But I do think it's important to stay viable. For the 'über fans,' it's always a really, really good thing. And that's what you do it for — you do it for you, you do it for the real fans, the real true fans."

More recently, Rockett admitted that he and other members of POISON harbored some resentment toward Michaels , whose frequent tours as a solo artist caused the band to take a five-year break from the road.

"I think we need to get away from each other and do other things, but at the same time, I think he spent a little too much time away," Rockett said. "There's definitely some resentment, but not resentment like I want him to fail. I want him to do good. I just want POISON to be important too, and I would like [him] to put a little more energy into POISON ."

The PGA Tour is calling this a victory, but something doesn’t smell right

the darkness tour australia 2022

What’s the going rate to turn an American executive into a boot boy for a despotic torturer such as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman? Just how worn out are the knees of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan’s pants legs?

But let’s start with this simple question first: Why would the PGA Tour join forces with a vermin-populated fourth-rate start-up such as LIV Golf, a comedic failure that can’t command any ratings, headed by that king of the white mice, Greg Norman?

Bought. That’s the only word for Monahan and his henchies on the PGA Tour policy board, who have made an otherwise inexplicable — and still vague — deal to work with LIV and the European tour to form a new global enterprise , funded by the Saudis. They were bought. The only question is for how many bills.

PGA Tour agrees to partner with Saudi-backed LIV Golf, ending bitter feud

The PGA Tour had all the leverage. Sure, Brooks Koepka’s victory at the PGA Championship was a good storyline, but it wasn’t especially wounding to the PGA Tour. If anything, it made you wonder how long Koepka would be content to play customer golf in the bush league, now that he had his form back. Koepka’s star quality took an undeniable hit from his association with LIV, not to mention the Netflix documentary “Full Swing,” which revealed him as a manifestly shallow ding-dong. It will take a few more major victories to erase the quivering faintheartedness he showed during his career downturn, when he feared he couldn’t win on the PGA Tour anymore.

Let’s face it. Koepka and his fellow LIVers dived for the Saudi blood money like that guy pushing women and children aside to get in a lifeboat in “Titanic.” It was going to be pretty funny watching them try to get back on the deck of the big ship.

Here was Monahan last year, talking to Jim Nantz on CBS about accepting Saudi sports-washing money. After unctuously invoking the pain of 9/11 families, he said, “I would ask any player that has left or any player that would consider leaving, ‘Have you ever had to apologize for being a member of the PGA Tour?’ ”

So what other sour ingredients are baked into this strange cake, along with total secrecy, inside dealing and what appears to be a rampant conflict of interest? Somehow, Monahan and Edward Herlihy, the chair of the PGA Tour policy board, wound up hand in hand with his excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan as the leaders of this new for-profit global golf organization funded by a fresh infusion of Saudi “capital.” This organization is so committed to unifying the game that no actual golfers knew about the deal until it hit social media .

The PGA Tour-LIV deal stunned pro golfers — and upset more than a few

Somewhere along this very muddy line, the PGA Tour found itself advised by the New York law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Which is interesting, because who is a partner and co-chair of that firm? Herlihy. And what sort of work does the firm mainly do? Multibillion-dollar mergers and acquisitions. It’s also known for its uniquely profitable billing system: It doesn’t hit clients with just billable hours but also large flat fees and sometimes percentages of deals .

And what did Herlihy’s firm evidently advise the PGA Tour to do? Merge.

And who was one of the firm’s three lawyers representing the PGA Tour in this deal while also sitting as chair of its policy board? Herlihy.

Herlihy was “key to the development and implementation of this agreement,” according to a PGA Tour spokesperson.

Exactly what cut or fee do Herlihy and his firm stand to make from this deal? After being told Herlihy would call me Tuesday, I’m still waiting for my chance to ask him.

So what will his compensation be for sitting on the very small “executive committee” of the new board of directors of this new for-profit global golf entity, alongside Rumayyan and Monahan? Unknown.

When will that be fully disclosed to the PGA Tour players, who have been sold down this river of blood? Who knows?

Here’s what we know — and don’t know — about the PGA Tour-LIV Golf partnership

Maybe it’s all pure as a Nativity scene. But here’s a simple question: Whom does this deal serve better, Herlihy or Rory McIlroy? Monahan or Scottie Scheffler? Or Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Tiger Woods or any of the other superb professionals who stayed loyal to each other and the PGA Tour, who refused to knife competitors in the financial back and break commitments and who managed not to sell themselves like degenerate pieces of human scruff to the Saudis? If I were them, I’d be hot. And I would have some other very simple questions.

Who made the first overture? On what authority? Who recommended accepting a deal? On what basis? How do loyal Tour players benefit, as opposed to suffering reputational harm? Why were they not informed? What is the approval process? What are their rights?

Mainly, how on earth are self-respecting PGA Tour golfers supposed to choke down this corporate sellout gluttony and pretend that any of it was really for them?

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

French Open 2024: Scores, schedule, results, start time, live stream, how to watch final matches

Iga swiatek vs. jasmine paolini and carlos alcaraz vs. alexander zverev are set for the finals this weekend at roland garros.

gettyimages-2154125598-1-1.jpg

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek completed her French Open three-peat with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jasmine Paolini on Saturday. She is now the youngest active player with at least five Grand Slam trophies.

Paolini found a 2-1 lead in the first set, but Swiatek responded by completely taking over and winning the next 10 games. Paolini was able to get on the board in the second set, but Swiatek had all the momentum and was impossible to stop.

Swiatek has now won 19 consecutive clay matches, including the Madrid and Italian Open. She became the first player to win those titles along with the French Open since Serena Williams in 2013.

Although she lost on Saturday, Paolini is having a breakout season at 28-years-old. She had not made it past the second round of a major until this year, and she will be making her debut in the WTA Top 10 next week. Her journey at Roland Garros isn't over quite yet, as she will be competing in the doubles final with partner Sara Errani on Sunday.

On the men's competition, Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his first French Open final with a 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against No. 2 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals on Friday. On Sunday, Alcaraz will be taking on No. 4 Alexander Zverev in a battle at Roland Garros.

Alcaraz will now have the opportunity to win the French Open for the first time in his professional career. The 21-year old previously was defeated in the 2023 French Open semifinals by Novak Djokovic, who had to withdraw from the 2024 French Open due to a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Zverev got the best of No. 7 Casper Ruud as he earned a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in Friday's other semifinal matchup. Zverev finally broke through the proverbial glass ceiling after being eliminated in the French Open semifinals in each of the previous three years. Zverev has one Grand Slam title under his belt as he defeated Karen Khachanov to win the 2020 US Open final.

Most recently, Alcaraz and Zverev faced one another in the Australian Open quarterfinals in a match where Zverev came out on top.

Here is everything you need to know about the 2024 French Open.
