Thailand Visa Photo Sizes and Requirements For 2023 – 2024

Thailand Visa Photo Specifications

There are two sizes of picture that are used for Thailand visa photos.  These are 4cm x 6cm and 3.5cm x 4.5cm.  In this article we’ll look at which size photo is required, depending on which visa you plan to get.

Some visitors to Thailand can enter without needing any type visa.  However citizens of many nations, including India and China, do require a visa in order to enjoy a vacation in Thailand.  (If you aren’t sure which if you need a visa, there’s a complete list of countries and visa requirements on the Thai Government’s Consular Affairs site . )

There are two options for these tourists.  They can either apply for a visa in advance at a Thai Embassy or Consulate in their own country.  Or they can obtain a Visa on Arrival online (eVOA / eVisa) or at Thai Immigration when they enter the country.  

It’s not only the visa fees and requirements that differ for these two types of visas used by tourists.  As you have already seen a different size of Thailand visa photo is required for the two types of visa. 

Photo Size For Thailand Visa on Arrival

For tourists on a short holiday the Visa on Arrival is the most popular solution.  This is valid for 15 days and can be obtained on online in advance or on arrival in Thailand. 

One photo, 4cm x 6cm is required for the Thailand Visa on Arrival. 

• Proof of funds to cover living expenses.  This is set at 10,000 Baht per person or 20,000 Baht per family (or equivalent in foreign currency) 
• Proof of onward or return travel. For example, your plane ticket home or to your next destination.
• Confirmation of accommodation booking in Thailand.
• A passport with at least 6 months validity.
• One photo which is 4 cm x 6 cm and has been taken within the last 6 months.
• Visa fee of 2,000 baht/person ( As of mid 2020, this fee is waived and there is no charge for the Visa on Arrival. )

Whilst it is cheaper to get your photos taken and printed before you enter Thailand, there are photo booths at Immigration points.  However, it will save you money and a long time queuing, if you have your 4cm x 6cm photo to hand when you enter the country. 

Thailand eVOA Photo Size   

Since 2019 it has been possible for visitors who would normally obtain their Visa on Arrival upon entry to Thailand, to apply online for an eVOA ( eVisa On Arrival)  This saves time filling out paperwork when arriving in Thailand.  Especially if you are from India or China, as Thailand receives millions of visitors from these two countries each year and during High Season there are often long queues at Visa on Arrival counters.

Application is a simple process and is done through VFS Global – the visa processing service that handles visa applications for governments worldwide.  Their website for eVisas for Thailand is : https://thailandevoa.vfsevisa.com/thailand/online/ .

**  SCAM ALERT – Do not apply for your Thailand eVOA or any Thai visa through any other website.  Other sites that Google list in search results are agents who are simply submitting your details to VFS Global and charging you an additional fee. ** 

Application is a simple process and can be done from the comfort of your own home or at work.  You complete an online application form and also upload a photograph.  The photo required for the Thailand eVisa On Arrival is also 4cm x 6cm.  

One important thing to note is that the Thailand eVOA can only be used at four international airports – Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), Don Meuang Airport (DMK), Phuket Airport (HKT) and Chiang Mai Airport (CNX). 

Thailand Tourist Visa Photo Size

If you are lucky enough to have more free time for your vacation and want to spend longer than 15 days exploring Thailand, you should apply for a Tourist Visa whilst in your home country.

You will need to submit two visa photos of 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm size with your completed visa application form.  Please check the website of the Thai Embassy in your country for details of all requirements.

This single entry Tourist Visa is valid for up to 60 days and can also easily be extended for an additional 30 days whilst in Thailand.  Please note that it can only be obtained from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.  It cannot be obtained online or upon entry into Thailand.

How to Take a Visa Photo Correctly

Six Steps for a Successful Visa Photograph

Face the Camera. This seems obvious, but you should face forward in your visa photo.  Not glancing up, down or to the side. Ensure that your eyes are open and clearly visible.  Not closed or squinting or covered by hair.  Your head and shoulders should be centered in the middle of the picture. Not off to one side. 

No Headgear.   Remove any headgear or hat unless it is being worn for religious reasons.  And even then it must not obscure your face in any way.  Spectacles shouldn’t be worn.  (Officially they can be worn in visa and passport photos.  But as some frames and lenses will obscure the eyes, it’s better to err on the side of caution and remove your glasses before taking your visa photos.) 

Head Size. Your entire head must be in the photo.  In the ideal visa photograph, your face – from the top of your head to your chin will take up around 75% of the photo. 

Photo Background.   Your visa photo should be taken using a plain white or cream background. There shouldn’t be any furniture or obstacles visible in the background.  

No Shadows.   Check that the photographer has positioned the flash correctly. As your picture will be rejected if there are shadows across your face which partially hide your features.  

Relax! It’s not easy to relax when you are trying to focus on having a good visa photo taken and also listening to the photographer’s directions. But try to.  Your face should appear calm and stress free, so that your features are not distorted.  Note that neither smiling or scowling, are permitted in visa or passport photos.  Your teeth should not be visible.

Quality: The photo must be in color, clear, in focus, and printed on high-quality photographic paper with a print resolution of at least 600 dpi. It should also accurately show your natural skin tone. The image should be in JPG or JPEG format for online applications, and the size limit is 3MB.

Background: Use a plain background with no patterns or shadows. White or off-white is preferred as long as there’s a contrast between your face and the background.

Head position: Look directly at the camera without tilting your head. Your head should be level and centered in the frame. Both sides of your face must be visible.

Facial expression: You should have a neutral expression with your eyes open and clearly visible and your mouth closed.

Lighting: Make sure the light is even and doesn’t cast shadows or create glare on your face or in the background.

If you have voluminous hair, your entire head, including the hair, should still be visible in the image without covering or changing the size of your face.

Get a tourist visa in advance from your local embassy or consulate, or online

If you are not eligible for visa-free travel or a VoA, you will need to apply for a tourist visa ahead of your visit. It allows a stay of up to 60 days and is valid for three or six months. Fees and conditions vary; contact your local Thai embassy or consulate for the latest rules.

The Thai government's e-visa process makes applying online a possibility for eligible nationalities. Use  the Q&A form to understand if this process is open to you. If it is, you can create an online account and follow the steps to provide all the requested information digitally, paying the application fee ahead of processing. If your application is successful, a confirmation email will be sent to you, which you should print out and show to airline or immigration officials when traveling to Thailand.

Education visas are available for those going to study  

Thousands of travelers visit Thailand yearly for long-term diving training, meditation study, Muay Thai courses, language lessons and more. If that's you, you can  apply for an education visa .  

You'll need a letter of acceptance from an accredited education institution showing proof of enrollment on a course, and your passport should be valid for at least six months past the end of the course. The single-entry visas are valid for three months.

Thailand doesn't yet have a true digital nomad visa

The closest thing Thailand has to a digital nomad visa is the new LTR (long-term resident) visa . Unfortunately, it's geared toward those with money. Applicants must pay a processing fee of 50,000B (approximately US$1380) and show proof of earning US$80,000 per year (or at least US$40,000 per year if they can fulfill other requirements, such as having a master's degree). They also need insurance covering US$50,000 and must work in a legally registered company that has an income of no less than US$150 million within the past three years. If granted, it allows up to a 10-year stay for skilled professionals who wish to work from Thailand.

Tourist visas can be extended in Thailand

If you run short on time during your stay, tourist visas can be extended for an additional 30 days at any immigration office in Thailand at the discretion of Thai immigration authorities; the usual fee is 1900B. See the website of the  Immigration Bureau for office listings.  

Remember to dress in your best when you visit the office; turning up in threadbare beachwear and thongs is unlikely to reassure the immigration officers that you have funds to support yourself for a longer stay.

For all types of visa extensions, bring two passport-sized photos and photocopies of the photo and visa pages from your passport. Always take care of your visa business yourself; if you go through a third party, you'll pay more, and there's a risk of falling for a scam.

What if I overstay my visa?

If you overstay your visa, the usual penalty is a fine of 500B per day, with a 20,000B limit. Fines must be paid in Thai baht, either at the airport or in advance at an immigration office. Kids under 15 are exempt, and if you've overstayed by only one day or your departure is delayed because of circumstances beyond your control (eg a flight cancellation by the airline), you usually won't get charged.

"The visa run" is still a possibility... twice

Another extremely popular extension-of-stay option for travelers eligible for visa-free entry is simply to cross a land border and re-enter Thailand after a few days. A new visa exemption will be issued upon your return.

This typically works well the first two times, but authorities are becoming increasingly strict towards travelers who try to extend their stay indefinitely by popping over the border multiple times; don't expect to be able to come back in if you've already done it twice, and remember that re-entry is at the discretion of the visa agent.

The Thailand Tourist Visa Guide (Single & Multiple Entry)

The majority of foreign nationals are able to enter Thailand on a visa exemption stamp.

This means that when you enter Thailand you are given a stamp at the immigration desk that allows you to stay in the country for 30 days.

Okay, so now you're clear on how long you can stay when you arrive without a visa, what if you want to stay for 6 weeks, or 2 even months?

In this case, you can apply for a Tourist Visa before you travel.

In this FAQ guide, I'll answer all common queries regarding the Thailand Tourist Visa, both single and multiple entry.

1. Where can I get a Tourist Visa?

A Tourist Visa can be obtained from a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country, or a country outside of Thailand, if you live abroad or are already traveling.

You can also apply via the E-Visa online system. Indeed, some embassies may no longer accept applications for Tourist Visas and instead require you to apply online.

The E-Visa is delivered via email. You can then print it out and present it to immigration on arrival.

What different types of tourist visa are there?

A. single entry.

The Single Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 3 months from its date of issue. It allows a single stay of a maximum of 60 days.

B. Multiple entry

The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 6 months from its date of issue.

It allows an unlimited number of entries within the 6-month validity of the visa. Each entry allows a maximum stay of 60 days.

For example, if you leave Thailand on the 59th day of your stay and re-enter the country a day later, you will be stamped in for a further 60 days.

What documents do I need to get the Tourist Visa?

The requirements may vary slightly between country, but this is usually what's required from your local embassy.

• A completed visa application form with two recent passport type photos attached. The form can be downloaded from your local Thai embassy website.
• Your passport must have a minimum 6 months remaining validity, and at least two blank pages – this is so your visa can be added to the passport, and for entry/exit stamps when entering and leaving Thailand.
• If you reside in a country but are not a citizen of that country, then you will be required to show a visa or residence card that permits you to stay. You will also be required to show evidence of where you live, by way of utility bill, bank account statement, or driving license.
• Two recent passport size photographs. You can get these done at a photo booth (in a mall or store) or at some print services shops.
• Confirmation of travel (flight tickets).
• Proof of accommodation in Thailand: this can be a copy of your hotel booking or a letter from the family or friend you are staying with.
• Copy of bank statement to show proof of earnings. This requirement will differ between countries, and differs for the single and multiple entry visas. For example, for a Single Entry Tourist Visa from a US Thai embassy, you will need a copy of your bank statement showing $700 per person and $1,500 per family. For a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, you will need a copy of your bank statement for the last 6 months showing a minimum balance of $7,000 (every month).

Thailand's E-Visa System

If you are applying online through the E-Visa system, you will require the following documentation:

• Passport or travel document with a validity of not less than 6 months.
• Photograph taken within the past six months.
• Evidence of travel to Thailand (air ticket paid in full).
• Evidence of adequate finance (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family).

Please note that you are not required to submit any supporting documents in person at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate after completing the E-Visa application. Once approved, a confirmation e-mail will be sent through and you can  print a copy of the confirmation e-mail to present to airline and Thai Immigration officials.

Historically, Thailand's online systems have always fallen way short of expectations, with browser compatibility issues, bugs, broken links, etc., but the new visa system is working pretty well.

How much does a Thai Tourist Visa cost?

The cost varies between country, but here is the cost for the US and UK:

• US: Single – $40. Multiple Entry – $200
• UK: Single – £30. Multiple Entry – £150

How long does it take to process a Tourist Visa?

If you attend the Thai embassy in person, the process will take around 5 working days. If you apply by mail, the process will take a minimum of 15 days.

Applying online will take 6-10 working days.

This is a general guideline and will differ between countries, and may be longer or shorter depending on how busy the embassy/consulate is.

I would personally allow 2 weeks if applying in person or online, and 3 weeks if applying by mail. This will ensure you get your visa before your flight date.

When is my Tourist Visa valid from?

The Single Entry Tourist Visa is valid 3 months from date of issue, and the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 6 months from date of issue.

When you enter Thailand, you will be stamped in for 60 days.

Note: The expiry date of the visa shows on the visa sticker as ‘ENTER BEFORE'. When you enter Thailand, you will receive a rectangular stamp in your passport stating your date of entry and the ‘ADMITTED UNTIL' date. This date will be exactly 60 days after your date of entry

What happens if I leave Thailand before my 60-day stay is up?

If you leave prior to your 60-day stay ending, the remaining days will be forfeited.

If you think you will want to leave Thailand and re-enter, you should get a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa.

The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 6 months from date of issue. You are allowed unlimited entries within the 6-month period of the visa. If you exit Thailand, as long as you re-enter before the visa expires, you will be stamped in for a further 60 days.

Can I extend my visa inside Thailand?

For those who want to extend their stay in Thailand, you can extend the 60-day Single Entry Tourist Visa by 30 days at a local Immigration Office. The fee for the extension is 1,900 Baht.

Under the Multiple Entry Visa, you can extend one of the 60-day stays by a further 30 days. The cost is the same.

Under the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, by saving the 30-day extension for your final entry, you can accumulate almost 9 month's stay in Thailand.

Can I cancel my visa and get a refund?

No. The visa fee is non-refundable.

Can't I just do border runs instead of getting a Tourist Visa?

Because you are granted 30 days stay on arrival in Thailand, in theory you could just leave over a land border after 30 days and return the same day, activating a further 30 day's stay.

This is known as a border run . People used to stay in Thailand for years just going back and forth over the border.

However, the current rule is that if you enter Thailand over land without a visa, you are allowed a maximum of two 30-day entries within any rolling 12-month period.

With a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, you can go in an out as many times as you want within the validity of the visa.

Tourist Visa (TR) may be granted to passengers for touristic purpose in Thailand.

Types of Tourist Visa and Validity:

• Single-Entry Tourist Visa: valid for entering Thailand once within 3 months from the date of visa issuance. The period of stay is 60 days maximum.
• Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa: valid for entering Thailand multiple times within 6 months from the date of visa issuance. It allows the holder to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days per entry, adding up to 180 days maximum during visa validity.

Tourist Visa (MICE)

Tourist Visa (MICE) may be granted to applicants who hold ordinary passport and wish to attend conferences, seminars, meetings, exhibitions promoted by Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) for 60 days or less per trip.

• Travel tickets to and from Thailand (Period of stay in Thailand not more than 60 days)
• Invitation Letter issued by the Thai Authorities

* The Royal Thai Embassy needs formal approval from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand to issue this kind of visa to specific applicants.

Tourist Visa (Medical Treatment - MT)

Tourist Visa for Medical Treatment (MT) may be granted to applicants who wish to enter Thailand for medical treatments at hospitals or medical facilities in Thailand for 60 days or less per trip.

• Single-Entry Visa: valid for entering Thailand once within 3 months from the date of visa issuance. The period of stay is 60 days maximum.
• Letter issued by Hospital or Medical Facilities in Thailand – specifying medical purpose and duration of treatment.
• Certified copy of unabridged birth certificate, certified original passport of ID of parents/legal guidance, and original letter of notarized consent for minor to travel abroad by parents/legal guidance (for minor under 20 years old).

Transit/Sport Activities/Crew/Conveyance (TS/S/C) Visa

Purpose of Visit: This type of visa may be issued to applicants who wish to

• travel in transit through the Kingdom in order to proceed to the country of destination or to re-enter his/her own country: (Category “TS”)
• participate in sports activities (sportsmen, sportswomen, etc.): (Category “S”)
• be in charge or crew of a conveyance coming to a port, station or area in the Kingdom: (Category “C”)
• Travel tickets showing destination (and third country destination for transiting passengers) to and from Thailand
• For transiting passenger: Visa of a third country (where the applicant will travel to after Thailand) in the passport or travel document (if any)
• For Crew on airplane/vessel: Letters from employer
• For Sport: Letter from local organisation and Invitation from organisation in Thailand. In case of non-professional juvenile sport players visiting Thailand for sport competition, letter of invitation stating the applicant's sporting activities in Thailand is required.

* For family members traveling together, documents showing family relation such as a copy of birth certificate or marriage certificate must be submitted.

Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa

From 1 September 2022, applicants for the "Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa" will have to submit their application and documents online with the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) at https://ltr.boi.go.th/ . BOI will consider all required documents and make approvals. Once approved by BOI, applicants in South Africa and Embassy’s accredited countries shall apply for the LTR visa with the qualified visa processing service companies of the Royal Thai Embassy.

Requesting LRT Visa need to be submitted to BOI

After receiving approval letter from BOI, applicants can submit Visa application as follows;

• All documents which have been submitted to the BOI
• Approval letter from BOI
• A copy of round trip flight ticket(s).

* Document issued by Non-Thai Authorities MUST be certified by Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and/or the foreign Embassy prior to submission

• Other documents: as may be requested by Consular officers in addition to the documents above. Please note that Consular officers reserve the right to require additional documents, or an interview with the applicant, as deemed necessary, without prior notice.

Remark: Applicant from Nigeria must submit letter from employer and certificate of Clearance issued by the National Drug Law Enfrocement Agency of Nigeria (NDLEA) that is certified by Nigerian Misistry of Foreign Affairs and Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja

Non-Immigrant Visa-B (Business)

• wish to conduct business in Thailand OR
• invest in condominiums in Thailand OR
• have a Thai bank account or purchase a Thai government bond with the equivalent amount of not less than 3 million Baht.
• This type of visa enters into force from 9 October 2020.

Types and validity of Non-Immigrant Visa-B:

• Single-Entry: valid for 90 days from the date of visa issuance. Visa holders may contact the Immigration Bureau of Thailand, after entering Thailand, for the extension of stay and re-entry permit.
• Multiple-Entry: Valid for 1 year after the date of visa issuance (90 days maximum per stay). This type of Visa will only be granted to those who wish to visit Thailand for short business trips and do not seek to be employed in Thailand.

Additonal requirements: Agenda/Schedule dates from both companies in South Africa or Embassy’s accredited countries and Thailand within 1 year for consideration.

• Letter of invitation*, stating the objective and the period of the stay in Thailand * For applicants who wish to request for multiple entry will need to indicate the agenda date of entry and exit within 1 year
• Business license
• Value added Tax (VAT) registration document (Phor-Phor 20)
• Latest Balance Sheet (Financial Statement)

* For applicants who wish to request for multiple entry will need to indicate the agenda date of entry and exit within 1 year

- In case that the company sponsoring all expenses for the applicant, the letter of sponsoring has to indicate details of employment of the applicant.

***All letters must be typed in the company’s letter head and signed by authorized person **Copies of company documents must be signed by authorized person and affixed the company seal

For Non-Thai nationals who have owned condominium / apartment value USD$100,000 or 3 million baht or more

• a. A copy of title deed or ownership documents of the condominium owned by the applicant
• b. An original bank statement of the applicant, which shows a deposit with the equivalent amount of not less than 500,000 Baht for the last 6 months.

For Non-Thai nationals who have been invested in government bond or held saving accounts in Thailand with of at least USD$100,000 or 3 million baht

• Evidence of money transmission and copy of bank book of the bank account in Thailand with an equivalent amount of not less than 3 million Baht for the last 6 months; or Thai government bond with an equivalent amount of not less than 3 million Baht for the last 6 months.
• An original bank statement of the applicant, which shows a deposit with the equivalent amount of not less than 500,000 Baht for the last 6 months.
• A copy of flight ticket(s).
• Other documents: as may be requested by Consular officers in addition to the documents above. Please note that Consular officers reserve the right to require additional documents, or an interview, as deemed necessary, without prior notice.

Remark: Applicant from Nigeria must submit letter from employer and certificate of Clearance issued by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency of Nigeria (NDLEA) that is certified by Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja

The Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right not to accept any visa application whereby any required document is absent. If the above procedures are not completed, the official will not proceed with your application.

All documents: Documents in languages other than Thai or English have to be translated into either Thai or English and notarised by notary organs or relevant diplomatic/consular missions.

Non-Immigrant Visa-B / IB (Working)

This page contains information on document requirement for applicants who wish to be employed in Thailand. Please check your eligibility to apply for visa at the Royal Thai Embassy, Pretoria,

Required documents for Non-Immigrant Visa-B applicants are as follows:

• Copy of ID Document other than Passport (for example ID Card or Driver License)
• Invitation letter* from the employer in Thailand, indicating details of employment, including position, salary and length of contract (if any)
• Copy of Certificate of Thai Business Registration certificate issued by the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand / School Registration certificate issued by the Ministry of Education of Thailand (for school teachers)
• Approval Letter from the Ministry of Labour (WP3) issued by the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour, Mit-Maitree Road, Din-daeng District, Bangkok, Tel: +662-245-2745, (Japanese nationals are exempted from submitting this document, in accordance with JTEPA). Other documents which could be used to replace WP3 Approval Letter include a letter from the Board of Investment, universities, schools, international organisations, or charitable organisations.

Non-Immigrant Visa-ED

Non-Immigrant Visa-ED may be granted to applicants who wish to pursue their full-time education, internship, or any other educational programme in Thailand.

Validity: 90 days from the date of visa issuance. Visa holders may contact the Immigration Bureau of Thailand, after entering Thailand, for the extension of stay and re-entry permit.

- Kindly download and type out the application form, print and sign, 2 copies are required. No handwritten forms will be accepted.

Letter from the school, training institution or company in Thailand (Original) – The letter must be typed in the school/company’s letter head signed by authorized person and a copy of School license or business registration (Copies of documents must be signed by authorized person and affixed the seal).

Important Notes: For informal courses are currently not applicable, e.g. Thai language and cultural training courses, applicants must provide documents which demonstrate that the course meets the minimum requirement as follows: - If the course is no longer than 5 months, the period of study at least 4 days per week, 2 hours per day. - If the course is longer than 5 months, the period of study at least 5 days per week, 5 hours per day.

• A copy of Transcript of previous studies (if applicable)
• An Original Police Clearance Certificate (valid for no less than 6 months)
• Evidence of adequate finance - An original bank statement with an equivalent amount of not less than ZAR 11,000 (per person) for the last 3 months, or ZAR 22,000 per family. Must state bank contact information.
• A copy of flight ticket/itinerary.

Required documents :

• the same as required documents for Non-Immigrant ED-visa
• plus marriage certificate and/or birth certificate (Document issued by Non-Thai Authorities MUST be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of those countries prior to submission)
• and a proof of additional 500,000 Baht (or equivalent) deposit in a bank account per parent (for the last 3 months).

* Not eligible for informal courses, e.g. Thai language or cultural training courses. Dependents are not eligible to work in Thailand.

**The Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right to reject any visa application with insufficient documents or if the reasons given are not fully supported. The visa fee is non-refundable**

Non-Immigrant Visa-F (Official)

• assume duties at a foreign diplomatic mission or an international organization in Thailand (and his/her family)
• assume duties for Thailand’s authority and state enterprise, including specialist in cooperation projects between the Royal Thai Government and other countries (and his/her family)

Types and Validity:

• Single-Entry Non-Immigrant Visa-F: 90 days from the date of visa issuance. Visa holders may contact the Immigration Bureau of Thailand, after entering Thailand, for the extension of stay and re-entry permit.

Diplomatic Official and Courtesy Visa Checklist

• An Official Note from Diplomatic Mission or Invitation Letter issued by relevant authority certifying identity of person and purpose of visit
• Other documents: as may be requested by Consular officers in addition to the documents above. Please note that Consular officers reserve the right to require additional documents, or an interview, as deemed necessary, without prior notice. Non-Immigrant Visa-O (Volunteer)

Non-Immigrant Visa-O may be granted to applicants who wish to perform volunteer activities with state enterprises or social organizations in Thailand.

• Single-Entry Non-Immigrant Visa-O: 90 days from the date of visa issuance. Visa holders may contact the Immigration Bureau of Thailand, after entering Thailand, for the extension of stay and re-entry permit.
• Invitation letter from organization in Thailand, indicating details of volunteer, including position, responsibility, and length of contract (if any)
• A copy of the Organization Registration certificate as Non-profit Organization (NGO)

Non-Immigrant Visa-O (Spouse/Dependent)

• lawfully married to a Thai citizen or lawful parents of the Thai children.
• Accompany foreign spouse/parent who works in Thailand
• Accompany foreign dependent who studies in Thailand

Non-Immigrant Visa-R, R-A (Religious Approved)

Non-Immigrant Visa-R, R-A may be granted to applicants who wish to perform religious / missionary works with the concurrence of the competent Thai Authorities.

• Single-Entry Non-Immigrant Visa-R: 90 days from the date of visa issuance. Visa holders may contact the Immigration Bureau of Thailand, after entering Thailand, for the extension of stay and re-entry permit.
• Multiple-Entry Non-Immigrant Visa-R-A: 1 year from the date of visa issuance.

Required documents for Non-Immigrant Visa-R, R-A applicants are as follows:

• An Official Note certifying purpose of the visit from the Department of Religious Affairs of Thailand and the Office of the Immigration Bureau of Thailand * For Non-Immigrant Visa-R-A applicants, an official Note issued by the Immigration Bureau of Thailand is also required. Also, the Royal Thai Embassy needs formal approval from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand to issue this kind of visa to specific applicants.

Non-immigrant Visa-b / Ib (working)

5.1 Invitation letter* from the employer in Thailand, indicating details of employment, including position, salary and length of contract (if any)

5.2 Copy of Certificate of Thai Business Registration certificate issued by the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand / School Registration certificate issued by the Ministry of Education of Thailand (for school teachers)

5.3 Approval Letter from the Ministry of Labour (WP3) issued by the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour, Mit-Maitree Road, Din-daeng District, Bangkok, Tel: +662-245-2745, (Japanese nationals are exempted from submitting this document, in accordance with JTEPA). Other documents which could be used to replace WP3 Approval Letter include a letter from the Board of Investment, universities, schools, international organisations, or charitable organisations.

 5.4.1 School Teachers

  - Curriculum vitae/resume

  - An Original Police Clearance Certificate in English (valid for no less than 6 months)

  - Evidence of qualification (e.g. university certificates) and evidence of previous employment (e.g. letter from previous company)

  - A teaching license

  - Applicants for private school’s teacher are also required to submit a letter from the Ministry of Education In Thailand

   * Document issued by Non-Thai Authorities MUST be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of those countries prior to submission

 5.4.2 Professional Sport Players

  - Evidence of previous overseas employment must be in English and certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country or relevant authorities

   - An Original Police Clearance Certificate (valid for no less than 6 months) in English issued by relevant authority of the country in which the applicants had previous residency.

5.6 Letter issued by the Board of Investment of Thailand (for the Non-IB Visa)

• Dependents Applicant’s family members, namely; spouse, parents or children who are unmarried and under 20 years old, are eligible to apply for Single-Entry Non-Immigrant O-visa. Required documents are the same as required documents for Non-Immigrant B-visa plus marriage certificate and birth certificate (Document issued by Non-Thai Authorities MUST be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of those countries prior to submission).

Non-immigrant Visa-m (media)

Non-Immigrant Visa-M may be granted to applicants who wish to work as a film-producer, journalist, or reporter in Thailand.

Guidance for foreign journalists who wish to work in Thailand

A journalist who wishes to receive permission to work in Thailand as correspondent in a representative office of a foreign news, newspaper, television or radio agency in Thailand, and who wishes to live in Thailand for up to one year or over without having to extend visa every 3 months, can file a request (together with the important documents listed under 2.) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for approval.

A foreign journalist must send in the following documents to the Press Division in Bangkok:

2.1 An official letter from the news agency he or she is working for to introduce the journalist to the Director-General of the Information Department and to confirm the appointment of the journalist to work in Thailand;

2.2 The journalist's resume;

2.3 Details of background, circulation, list of owner and editor(s) of the publication;

2.4 A copy of valid passport (expiry date must be no less than 6 months from the day the application is submitted to the embassy); 2.5 identity card of the journalist issued by the news agency and any other relevant documents should you feel that they will help support your application;

  - For print media, we require originals of the publications in which each article has been published. Clippings or photocopies are not acceptable

  - For television reporters, CD or DVD of the aired segments is required.

  - For radio journalists, radio producers or other off-air personnel, CD of the programs is required.

  - For television cameramen, producers and directors, CD or DVD of the sequence of credits of the programs containing their names.

  Note: Other relevant documents are required if members of the journalist's family wish to accompany him/her to reside in Thailand. Eg. a copy of marriage certificate and birth certificate

2.7 Application fee of SGD $100 (CASH ONLY)

  - submit relevant documents to the Press Division at least 1 month prior to your date of departure for Thailand;

  - the Ministry will seek necessary information from the respective Thai Embassies or Consulates-General where the headquarters of the journalist's news agency is located;

  - the Press Division will schedule the journalist for an interview after receiving all the relevant information from the Embassies and Consulates-General;

  - if the permission is granted, the Ministry will issue 3 letters of acknowledgment to the relevant governmental agencies;

  - for the journalist who has obtained non-immigrant visa category "B", the visa will be renewed without having to leave the country; - for the journalist who has obtained visa category "TR" * must leave the country in order to obtain non-immigrant visa category "M" before re-entering Thailand.

  - If the permission is granted, the journalist will be issued a go-day non-immigrant visa, category "M";

  - after arriving in Thailand, each journalist must contact the Press Division, Information Department, at the earliest occasion, to report of his/her arrival; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue 3 letters** of acknowledgement certifying the eligibility of the journalist.

** One of the letters is to be presented to the Department of Public Relations for the issuance of the journalist's Thai press card. The other two letters are to be presented to the One-Stop Service Centre for the application for work permit and visa as well as permit of stay extension.

Please be informed that, in all cases, it takes approximately 1 month to process the document. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Royal Thai Embassy in Pretoria have the right to reject any applicants who submit their request less than 1 month prior to their departure and/or have insufficient documents in support of their applications.

** If his/her visa is going to expire/has been expired while waiting for the process. It is the journalist's responsibility to obtain another valid visa.

A Thai Press card is the journalist's personal identification while working in Thailand and is needed in order for him/her to be able to attend official functions, press conference and briefings. The press card is usually issued within a week upon receiving your application, and must be renewed every year.

For further details regarding other required documents to apply for a Thai press card, the journalist should contact the Foreign Office, Public Relations Department (7th floor), Soi Aree, Thanon Phaholyothin 7, SamsenNai, Phayathai, Bangkok 10400, Tel: O 2618 2323 Ext. 1700, 1708-09.

The One-Stop Service Center for Visas and Work Permits, located at, Rasa Tower 2, 16th Floor, 555 Phaholyothin Road, Chatuchak, Bangkok. Tel. 0 2937-1155, Fax: O 2937 1191, will process both the work permit and visa as well as permit of stay extension within three hours, assuming all necessary supporting documents are provided.

  6.1 an original letter from the news agency, confirming the appointment of the journalist to work in Thailand.

  6.2 a copy of passport indicating name and number of passport, as well as the expiration date of the visa;

  6.3 a copy of the press card and work permit;

  6.4 An application form for media registration together with one photograph

  6.5 at least three samples of published news reports or other forms of news reports by the journalist (please see detail in 2.5)

Non-immigrant Visa-o-a (long Stay)

Purpose of Visit: This type of visa may be issued to applicants aged 50 years and above who wish to stay in Thailand for a period of not exceeding 1 year without the intention of working. Holder of this type of visa is allowed to stay in Thailand for 1 year. Employment of any kind is strictly prohibited.

Please note that Non-Immigrant Visa-O-A (Long Stay/Retirement) will only be granted by the Royal Thai Embassy, Pretoria, to South African and Accredited Countries’ Permanent Residents.

• Applicant must be aged 50 years and over (on the date of submitting application)
• Applicant is not prohibited from entering the Kingdom as provided by the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979)
• Applicant does not have a criminal record in Thailand and the country of the applicant’s nationality or residence
• Applicant must have a nationality of or residence in the country where the visa application is submitted
• Applicant does not have prohibitive diseases (Leprosy, Tuberculosis, drug addiction, Elephantiasis, third phase of Syphilis) as indicated in the Ministerial Regulation No. 14 B.E. 2535

  1.2.3 A letter from the bank verifying the amount of deposit in the bank account of no less than 800,000 Baht (or equivalent).

  1.2.4 An Original Police Clearance Certificate or Letter of verification stating that the applicant has no criminal record issued from the country of his/her nationality or residence. Such verification must be valid for no more than 3 months.

  1.2.5 A medical certificate showing no prohibitive diseases as indicated in the Ministerial Regulation No.14(B.E. 2535) certificate shall be valid for not more than three months.

  1.2.6 Additional health insurance requirement for Non-Immigrant O-A

   - Outpatient benefit with a sum insured of not less than 400,000 THB, and

   - Inpatient benefit with a sum insured of not less than 400,000 THB

The applicants must submit the following:

Health insurance policy document issued by a Thai or foreign insurance company, stating that the applicant is medically insured for the period of at least 1 year and with coverage as mentioned above:

  (a) In case of a foreign insurance company, the applicant must submit the original insurance policy document with 2 copies;

Dependents of holders of O-A

(Dependents of holders of O-A are currently not able to enter Thailand)

In the case that the applicant wishes to have his/her spouse stay together in the Kingdom but the spouse is not qualified for the O-A code visa on his or her own, the spouse may be eligible to apply for Single-Entry Non-Immigrant O-visa.

  - the same required documents as for Non-Immigrant O-A-visa

  - plus marriage certificate (Document issued by Non-Thai Authorities MUST be certified by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of those countries prior to submission).

  - A copy of bank statement has to show the amount of another 800,000 Baht (or equivalent) in addition to the applicant’s initial amount).

** Consular officer reserves the rights to ask for additional documents as deemed necessary**

Recommendations for the Alien While Staying in the Kingdom:

1. When completing the say of 90 days in the Kingdom, the alien shall report to the competent authority and report it every 90 days with the immigration officer in the alien’s residence area, or report to the police station in the alien’s residence if there is no immigration control there.

In order to report to the competent authority by mail, the alien shall do as follows:

The Report Form (referred to in Thai as Tor Mor 47) together with a copy of the passport pages showing the alien’s photograph, personal details, and the latest arrival visa stamp as well as a self-addressed envelope with postage affixed, shall be forwarded, by 7 days before the due date, by acknowledgement of receipt mail to the Immigration Bureau, Sathon Tai Road, Sathon District, Bangkok 10120.

In the case of conducting any following reports, the Reply Form for the previous Report shall be enclosed as well.)

2. At the end of the one-year stay, the alien who wishes to extend his/her stay shall submit a request for the extended period at the Immigration Bureau with documented evidence of money transfer, or a deposit account in the Kingdom, or an income certificate plus a deposit account at the total amount of no less than 800,000 Baht a year.

3. If the alien’s spouse wishes to extend his/her stay as well, the marriage certificate shall be produced.

Holder of this type of visa is allowed to stay in Thailand for 5 years each time (total 10 years). Employment of any kind is strictly prohibited.

Please note that Non-Immigrant Visa-O-X (Long Stay/Retirement) will only be granted by the Royal Thai Embassy, Pretoria, to those 14 countries’ passport holders who have Permanent Resident Permit in South Africa and Accredited Countries.

• Applicant must be aged 50 years and over (on the day of submitting application)
• Applicants must be nationals and passport holders of eligible countries, namely; Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Canada and United States.
• Applicant must have a bank deposit of no less than 3 million baht in Thailand or a bank deposit of no less than 1.8 million baht and annual income of no less than 1.2 million baht. • Applicant must have a Thai health insurance for the duration of stay, with coverage for outpatient treatment of no less than 400,000 baht and inpatient treatment of no less than 400,000 baht.

• Having no criminal record in Thailand and the country of the applicant’s nationality and residence.

1. Basic Information about SMART Visa

The SMART Visa is a new type of visa designed to attract highly skilled manpower and investors to help accelerate the development of the country’s targeted industries. SMART Visa is offered to foreign experts, executives, entrepreneurs and investors who wish to enter into the Kingdom of Thailand to work or to invest in the following “S-Curve industries” or the country’s targeted industries.

2. Types of Smart Visa

The following categories of Smart Visa will be allocated to Smart Visa applicants, depending on the purpose or activity that foreigners wish to conduct in the Kingdom of Thailand.

3. Benefits and Privileges of SMART Visa

These benefits include:

(1) Visa validity up to 4 years (instead of the usual 1 year)

(2) No requirement of work permit

(3) Extension of reporting of stay to Immigration Bureau – from every 90-day to every year

(4) The right of legal dependents (spouse and children who are over 18 years of age) of the SMART Visa holder to live and work in Thailand equivalent to SMART visa holder (only for SMART Visa holder in Talent category).

4. Application Procedures

   4.1 Procedures for Qualification Endorsement Application

    (1) Register for online qualification endorsement application for Smart Visa on https://smart-visa.boi.go.th/register.php and activate an online account through a confirmation e-mail.

    (2) Complete an application form for the type of Smart Visa you wish to apply (T, I, E, S, and O if any) and make sure that you have a PDF version of the required documents you will need to upload and submit after the application form and required documents are all uploaded. By completing the online application, you confirm that you have read, understood and accepted the qualification endorsement requirements.

    (3) After completing the online application, submit an application package (paper package) via airmail or in person either to Smart Visa Unit at One Stop Service Center for Visa and Work Permit (OSS) located at Chamchuri Square Building.

    (4) Within 30 working days after having received complete documents, OSS will notify the applicant, the Immigration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the relevant agencies of the result of qualification endorsement application.

    (5) The qualified applicant can then proceed with applying for Smart Visa issuance at one of the following places, within 60 days from issuance date of the endorsement letter, which will be used as one of the supporting documents for application.

   4.2 Procedures for visa issuance at the Royal Thai Embassy, Pretoria

    * These procedures are the qualified applicants with residence in South Africa and Embassy’s accredited countries only *

    (1) After receiving Smart Visa result via email, please inform the Smart Visa Unit via email at [email protected] that you plan to receive Smart Visa at the Royal Thai Embassy, Pretoria at least one month in advance before the tentative date of flight to enter Thailand.

    (2) Your notification letter will be forwarded to your selected Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate-General via Telex by the Department of Consular Affairs in Bangkok. When this is done, you will be informed by Smart Visa unit via email. This process normally takes around 7-14 working days.

    (3) Directly contact the Royal Thai Embassy, Pretoria at [email protected] to make an appointment for Smart Visa issuance as soon as possible and inquire about the required documents since each embassy reserves the right to request additional documents.

Reporting Requirement

Smart Visa holders must report the address of current residence to the Immigration at One Stop Service Center for Visa and Work Permit (OSS) or at EEC Labour Administration Center in Chonburi on a yearly basis, counting from the date of receiving permission to stay in Thailand. This can be done 15 days before or 7 days after the due date.

However, in the case of re-entering the Kingdom, the report is due in one year from the date of the latest arrival. In addition, Smart Visa holders must also report their current status to the Smart Visa Unit at One Stop Center for Visas and Work Permits on a yearly basis from the issuance date of Smart Visa.

Thailand Expands Visa-Free Entry to Dozens of Countries in Bid to Attract More Visitors

Thailand is rolling out a variety of new visa programs designed to stimulate tourism.

The new measures, approved by Thai officials on Tuesday, include a 60-day visa exemption, a new Destination Thailand visa program and a measure that allows foreign university students who have studied in the country to remain for a year after graduation.

The new slate of visa measures also includes a long-stay visa for retirees, according to China Daily . Tourists from some 36 countries are expected to benefit from the sweeping changes when it comes to exploring Thailand.

Most notably, the visa announcements include an extension of the visa-free period for travelers from 30 days to 60 days. That change is set to take effect in June.

Additionally, Thailand's government has increased the number of countries that are eligible for a visa-free stay. Now a total of 93 countries are part of the program. Previously the figure was 57. Some of the countries that have been added include Cambodia, India, Kazakhstan and Laos.

The changes also include an increase in the number of countries whose citizens are eligible for visa on arrival. That program has been expanded from 19 countries to 31.

Digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, Muay Thai students and Thai food students will also benefit from the visa changes. The allowed period of stay in Thailand for individuals in this category has been tripled from the current 60 days to 180 days.

The Thai government is also lengthening the duration that foreign university students can remain in the country. They can now stay up to one year. The additional time will allow them to work in jobs that are not restricted to just Thai citizens, according to China Daily.

It is estimated that the cost of lost collections from all the new visa measures totals about $340 million annually.
