Metallica Play ‘Am I Evil’ With Diamond Head’s Brian Tatler at Tons of Rock Festival

A t their headlining set at the Tons of Rock Festival in Oslo, Norway, Metallica welcomed Diamond Head founder Brian Tatler to the stage for their cover of “Am I Evil?,” which they last performed in 2022.

Since 2023, Tatler has been a member of NWOBHM icons Saxon , who were among the 12 total bands that played on the first day of the annual festival. Obviously Metallica seized the opportunity and treated fans to a rare and special moment.

Metallica have only played “Am I Evil?” 11 times since it was a regular part of the set in 2011, so the performance alone was a bit of a rarity, much less getting the man who wrote the original song onstage with them.

Tatler had joined Metallica onstage at least two times prior — at the Big 4 show in Bulgaria in 2010 where he and all four groups played the cover song together, and in again in 2011 in the U.K. with some returning familiar faces onstage.

The cover came ninth in the metal legends’ 15-song festival set, which kicked off with “Whiplash” and concluded with “Master of Puppets.”

Metallica first covered Diamond Head’s Lightning to the Nations track as a B-side on the 1984 “Creeping Death” single. It has been released on subsequent live albums, compilations and covers albums as well. And, because of Metallica’s staggering album sales, the royalties have made Tatler quite a lot of money over the decades — enough for him to live off of.

“I was very flattered that Metallica had covered one of my songs and was very impressed with how accurate they had worked out the song and arrangement even in the guitar solo,” Tatler told Loudwire in a 2018 interview . “It was a very faithful cover, but tougher sounding and a more aggressive vocal. It’s since been featured on 18 different Metallica releases.”

The event, organised by Tatler, is an opportunity for the new generation of elite offspring to follow in their fathers footsteps and take their place in society.

Many of the daughters normally stay away from the limelight, avoiding journalists and public events, and instead flood their Instagram profiles with images of lavish holidays.

The remain largely silent on issues of politics, corruption, human rights, or the environment, fearing for their family's position in society if they speak out.

But, attending the Viennese Ball clearly takes its toll and several former guests have since risen to the boardrooms of banks and business corporations - or are on their way there.

One of the younger Kremlin daughters Yelizaveta Peskova, 23, spent months in Brussels in 2019 working as an intern at the European Parliament after attending the ball in 2015.

More than 171K patients traveled out-of-state for abortions in 2023, new data shows

tatler travel 2023

More than 171,000 patients traveled out-of-state to receive abortion care last year, according to new data from the Guttmacher Institute, which underscores the widespread impact of state abortion bans that followed the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022 .

Out-of-state travel for abortion care has more than doubled since 2019 when 73,100 patients traveled across state lines for abortions, according to the Guttmacher Institute's Monthly Abortion Provision Study project . The project estimates the number of abortions in each state without a total ban from January 2023 to March of this year.

The project found that over 1 million clinician-provided abortions took place in 2023. Of that figure, 171,300 people traveled out-of-state to have abortions, according to the data .

"What’s striking about this new data is how often people are traveling across multiple state lines to access abortion care," Isaac Maddow-Zimet, Guttmacher data scientist and project lead, said in a statement Thursday. "Traveling for abortion care requires individuals to overcome huge financial and logistical barriers, and our findings show just how far people will travel to obtain the care they want and deserve."

The new data revealed a trend of patients, mostly residents in southern states with strict abortion laws, traveling across multiple state lines to receive abortion procedures or dispensed pills. Before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, patients had traveled for abortion care due to legal barriers or the availability of providers within their state, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

But the significant increase in 2023 was a result of abortion bans and restrictions in individual states that were quickly implemented after the Supreme Court's decision, the Guttmacher Institute said. Patients have been forced to travel for abortion care because of the lack of access in their home states.

Where is abortion on the ballot?: Tracking abortion-related ballot measures in the upcoming election

Abortion laws 'affect thousands of people beyond that state’s borders'

The number of patients that travel out-of-state for abortion care has "always been particularly high" in states with restrictions, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

"Historically, however, many of the people traveling from restrictive states went to states that now have total abortion bans," the Guttmacher Institute said in a news release . "For instance, in 2020, more than 800 Louisiana residents traveled to Texas for abortion care; following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, that was no longer possible. In 2023, more than 3,500 Louisianans traveled across multiple states to get care in places like Florida, Illinois, and Georgia."

Data showed that most patients in states with strict policies traveled to the nearest or neighboring state that allowed abortions. But patients in southern states, which have the most restrictive laws compared to the rest of the country, had to travel across multiple state lines to receive care.

The state that had the most patients leave for abortion care was Texas, according to the data. A majority — more than 14,000 — traveled to New Mexico but thousands of others crossed several state lines for the procedure.

The state that received the most patients traveling for abortion care was Illinois, the data found. It showed that about 37,300 from 16 states went to Illinois to have an abortion.

Kelly Baden, vice president for public policy at the Guttmacher Institute, noted that Florida had a significant role last year in "maintaining some level of abortion access in the Southeast." More than 85,000 abortions occurred in the state in 2023.

But that figure is expected to drop because of Florida's six-week abortion ban that took effect in May. Currently, the closest state that provides abortion care later than six weeks in pregnancy is North Carolina, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

"The state of residence data makes it clear that this policy change will be devastating not only for Floridians, but also for the thousands of others who would have traveled there after being denied care in their home states," Baden said in a statement. "Once again, we see that a state’s abortion policies affect thousands of people beyond that state’s borders."

States with near-total bans on abortion

As of June, 14 states have near-complete bans on abortions with limited exceptions such as when the parent's life is at risk, rape, incest, and/or fetal anomalies. These states include Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia.

In Missouri, abortion is prohibited in nearly all cases, except for medical emergencies, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Last April, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum signed one of the country’s  most restrictive abortion measures  into law. The bill abortion at any stage of pregnancy, allowing exceptions only within the first six weeks for cases of rape, incest, or medical emergencies.

In Oklahoma, abortion is banned in almost all cases, without exceptions for rape or incest. In 2023, the State Supreme Court permitted the procedure for only when the parent's life was at risk.

Judge sets murder trial date for Bryan Kohberger, suspect in Moscow college student deaths

The trial date for Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the University of Idaho student homicides, is set. But where the trial may be held is still undecided.

Judge John Judge of Idaho’s 2nd Judicial District in Latah County at a hearing Thursday scheduled Kohberger’s murder trial for June next year and planned for a three-month long trial. That timeline would carry the trial through most of August 2025.

“As I look through all of this, there’s going to be a lot of motions, a lot of hearings, a lot of work,” Judge told the court Thursday. “And I tried to balance this out, and I do think it’s a pretty fair balance and I hope realistic.”

After the hearing, Judge issued his written order for the trial to begin on June 2, 2025, and run through Aug. 29, 2025. The filing lists a slew of other motion and hearing deadlines leading up to the closely watched case.

Judge said he expected it to take two weeks to seat a jury and eight weeks for the trial.

Kohberger, 29, faces four first-degree murder charges in the stabbing deaths of the U of I students in November 2022. The victims were seniors Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen, both 21, junior Xana Kernodle and freshman Ethan Chapin, both 20.

Sentencing, if Kohberger is convicted, could take up to two weeks, Judge said, including arguments for and against execution. Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty for Kohberger.

Prosecutors and Kohberger’s public defense team offered no objection to Judge’s proposed timeline. The scheduled date met the prosecution’s prior request for a trial over the summer to avoid conflicts with the local high school and the academic calendar for the U of I in Moscow, where the four victims attended college.

Anne Taylor, Kohberger’s lead public defender, called the trial schedule “reasonable,” but noted she had yet to present evidence over her push to move the trial out of Latah County over concerns of local juror bias against her client. The prosecution opposes moving the trial elsewhere in the state, and a hearing over the issue is scheduled for Aug. 29 .

“If that motion is granted, the court anticipates that the trial dates will not change, although the location of the trial would,” Judge said in his written order.

The hearing Thursday, which Kohberger attended wearing a navy blue suit and tie, lasted less than 15 minutes. Seated next to Taylor, he stood up at its conclusion, was directed by a bailiff, and shuffled out of sight of the court’s live webstream wearing shackles around his ankles.

Kohberger now jailed 18 months, and counting

At the time of the homicides, Kohberger was a graduate student at Washington State University in nearby Pullman, Washington. He was arrested about seven weeks after the homicides in December 2022 while visiting his parents in eastern Pennsylvania during winter break from school.

Kohberger has remained in the Latah County Jail beneath the courthouse — now at 18 months and counting — since arriving to Idaho in early January 2023 to answer to the charges. The costs of the case to taxpayers over that time have already surpassed $3.6 million , the Idaho Statesman previously reported.

Kohberger was arraigned in May 2023 and stood silent when asked for his plea to the charges, which also includes one felony burglary count. Judge entered a plea of not guilty on Kohberger’s behalf and set a trial date of October 2023. Until Thursday, that initial date was indefinitely postponed after Kohberger later waived his right to a speedy trial within six months of his arraignment.

“We’re about 13 months from the arraignment, and I think at this point — this is my opinion — that we’re getting the point of diminishing returns,” Judge said Thursday. He then proposed June 2025 for the high-profile murder trial.

The parents of Kaylee Goncalves have been some of the biggest proponents of scheduling a trial date, and also criticized the perceived slow pace of the legal process to this point. In a statement to the Statesman on Thursday through their attorney, the Goncalveses said they hoped that the trial remained in Latah County to help avoid any further delays.

“It was a good day today. We were able to get a trial date set and things appear to be moving forward,” the Goncalves family said. “We moved a little closer to justice today for Kaylee, Maddie, Xana and Ethan. Thank you again for all your support and prayers. It means a lot to our family!”

If Kohberger is convicted, the jury would have to reach a unanimous decision to sentence him to death, per Idaho law.

How Oman Looks to Grow Tourism: No Mega-Hotels Here

Josh Corder , Skift

June 25th, 2024 at 9:00 AM EDT

As the UAE and Saudi Arabia continue their mega-projects, we look at Oman's 'calmer' approach to tourism.

Josh Corder

Tourism in the Middle Eastern country of Oman is improving. The Gulf nation was hit hard by Covid and had long struggled to recoup its tourism sector. But government measures are helping.

Unlike the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Oman has largely stayed away from giga-projects and mega-hotels to spark tourism. Instead, the country focuses heavily on its heritage sector to boost travel, as well as its natural environment.

The country aims to increase the tourism sector’s contribution to 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2040. Oman also plans to attract 11.7 million tourists by 2040. To achieve these goals, the country is looking to attract more than $51 billion in investment.

Here are the latest tourism figures:

  • 767,900 visitors year-to-date by April 2024 compared to 668,168 up to the same point last year.
  • Revenues from three- to five-star hotels rose 10.7% to $242 million.
  • Hotel occupancy increased by 7%.
  • Around 4.3 million tourists visited Oman last year.

Oman’s Tourism Drives

One key development in Oman recently has been the extension of its ‘Khareef’ season. Khareef is the monsoon season in Oman, and an important period in the tourism calendar as temperatures drop and travelers flock to cooler parts of the country.

Traditionally, Khareef is promoted by Oman from late June to early September, but this year has been extended to a full three months of promotions to spur tourism.

Running from June 21 to September 21, Khareef is often Oman’s busiest travel period. In 2023, the season brought in close to one million travelers. Officials hope the extra few weeks of promotion will draw an additional 300,000 visitors.

In Salalah during this year, temperatures can range from 68°F to 77°F, a stark contrast to the wider Middle East during summer.

Recent Success

According to research from the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC), in 2023 Oman’s tourism GDP contribution increased by almost 35%, totaling 2.8 billion Omani Riyals ($7.2 billion). The sector witnessed job growth of 15%, employing 191,500 people.

Last year, international visitors put 1.1 billion Omani Riyals ($2.8 billion) into the economy, a 69% increase from 2022, while spending by domestic travelers hit 1.4 billion Omani Riyals ($3.6 billion).

WTTC is forecasting that the sector will grow its GDP contribution to more than 3.3 billion Omani Riyals ($8.5 billion) in 2024, 7.6% of the country’s economy, and is projected to employ more than 206,000 people across the country.

Collaborative Efforts

Surrounded by tourism powerhouses such as Dubai and the ever-growing Saudi Arabia , Oman has become increasingly focused on collaborations with nearby countries to boost its tourism.

In March, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) and Oman Ministry of Heritage and Tourism launched a ‘See Double’ campaign, prompting travelers to visit both destinations during their summer holidays.

That same month, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Oman signed a pact to promote cruises across all four destinations. The cruise sector contributed around 380,000 tourists into Oman before the pandemic.

The Sultanate has also been a key voice in promoting the upcoming ‘GCC zone’ visa.

Unified Travel in the Gulf

In October 2023, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman agreed to form a ‘ GCC zone ‘ for visas, a similar situation as the Schengen Zone across the EU. This visa was first mentioned in May 2023 at a conference in Dubai, where the countries’ ministers shared their hopes to unite the GCC so tourists would consider cross-country travel like they do in Europe.

This new visa comes under the banner of the “Gulf Strategy for Tourism 2023-2030,” which ministers also said is in the works. The meeting also looked into the establishment of a GCC Tourism Statistics Platform.

It will either roll out this year or next and has been universally praised by tourism leaders.

“This new Schengen-style visa is huge for [GCC] tourism and Ras Al Khaimah will see a huge benefit,” said Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority CEO Raki Phillips at the  Skift Global Forum East 2023 .

“There is nothing more important than a collaborative approach. We should compete collaboratively. In this part of the world, we want to be collaborative. That could mean visa processing, hotels, and airlines.”

With gas prices, airfare down compared to last year, millions to travel this July 4: AAA

tatler travel 2023

If you're planning a trip this Fourth of July holiday, you'll definitely want to leave more time to get to your destination as AAA predicts this will be the busiest Independence Day travel year yet − both nationally and for Delaware.

The auto association estimates that nearly 71 million people across the U.S. will travel 50 miles or more from home, 60.6 million of whom will be driving. That's 2.8 million more drivers than last year and more than 5 million more than in 2019, which was the busiest year on record for all modes of transport.

Another 5.7 million people are expected to fly, while 4.6 million will traverse by other means, according to AAA.

Of those millions of travelers, more than 200,000 Delawareans will be voyaging somewhere − 5.6% more than last year. Mirroring national numbers, the majority are planning to drive: More than 180,000, AAA says.

About 14,400 will fly and a little more than 9,000 will be taking other modes of transport.

RELATED: With Philadelphia airport delays, the travel nightmare begins ahead of busy holiday

This year's volume continues a trend that AAA has seen over the last several holidays: Travel has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels − and, clearly, beyond.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Gas, airfare cheaper than last year

Though AAA largely has not speculated on what's driving the increase in travelers, both gas prices and airfare are down this year compared to last.

In 2023, the national average was $3.53 per gallon of gas. As of Monday, it was $3.45, though AAA says prices will likely continue to decrease leading up to Independence Day.

At that point, AAA says, they are expected to level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.

READ: Your Delaware guide to Fourth of July 2024

"An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers," the auto agency said.

As of Monday, Delaware's prices were about the same as the national average . They were slightly up compared to last year, however, when the average at this time was $3.39.

The cost of air travel is also slightly less this year compared to last, AAA said.

Though the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket isn't exactly cheap − about $800, according to AAA − that's about 2% less than last year. Yet AAA expects about 7% more air passengers compared to 2023 and 12% more compared to 2019.

"Airports will be packed throughout the week," a news release said, adding that passengers looking to save time and money should travel with carry-on luggage rather than checked bags.

Worst times and places to drive

Because July 4 falls on a Thursday, traffic will likely be heavier much of that week − except for perhaps Monday, July 1, AAA says.

The worst time to drive will be on the actual holiday, between 2 and 7 p.m.

Drivers in metro areas should also expect July 3 and July 7 to be bad as travelers leave and return to town.

INRIX, a transportation data and insights company that partners with AAA to provide travel forecasts, said road trips could take up to 67% longer than normal.

Locally, some of the busiest roads are expected to be the Pennsylvania Turnpike between the Poconos and Philadelphia, with the heaviest traffic predicted around 8:30 a.m.

Route 1 in Delaware will also likely be packed with beachgoers, as it usually is around the holiday.
