Metallica 2017 Set List Tracker: WorldWired Tour

On May 10, Metallica kicked off their WorldWired tour promoting Hardwired... To Self-Destruct . Since this is the first time they're touring behind a new record since 2008's Death Magnetic , we thought we'd create this page to track how their set lists evolve from night-to-night.

We'll be updating this page regularly to see how the Hardwired songs are meshing with their older material, whether the sequence is switched up and which songs get added or dropped. And we'll include videos under each set list so you can see and hear the results. Check it all out below.

Aug. 16: Edmonton, Alberta

Metallica only made two changes for the final stop on their tour, "Hit the Lights" and "Blackened." But it was memorable for a speech James Hetfield made early in the evening in reference to current events. "Metallica doesn’t give a s---, all right?" he said . "We don’t give a s--- about the differences, okay? We care about the similarities. So the fact that you’re here — we don’t care who you voted for, what you do or don’t eat, we don’t care what color your skin is, what you do for a job. We don’t care what you’ve done in the past. What we do care about is the fact that we’re all together here, celebrating life with music. So for me, you are Metallica family. All are welcome. Are you with us?”

After the detour in San Francisco, Metallica brought back "Wherever I May Roam" and "Halo on Fire" to their set in Vancouver. They also worked "The Memory Remains," "Whiplash" and "Fight Fire With Fire" into their regular spots.

For their homecoming gig at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Metallica made four changes to their set list, rotating in "Fuel" and changing the middle section to “Harvester of Sorrow,” "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and "Motorbreath." The set was almost identical to their July 14 show in Quebec City -- the last time they performed "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" -- but with "Motorbreath" played instead of "Whiplash."

Aug. 7: Metallica Night at AT&T Park

For the fifth consecutive year, the San Francisco Giants held Metallica Night to honor their hometown heroes. Hetfield and Hammett performed the national anthem before the game, and Ulrich held a Q&A session with former tennis star Brad Gilbert. A portion of the proceeds benefited the Posey Family Foundation .

Man Arrested for Allegedly Urinating on Fans

During Metallica's Aug. 4 concert in Glendale, Ariz., a man standing behind a family of three was arrested after they “felt warm liquid rushing over their backs and legs.” The unnamed man, who was surprisingly described as "very drunk," faces charges of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. "I have to say in the 15 years I’ve been on the bench, this is one of the most disgusting scenarios I’ve ever read,” the judge said during his arraignment. “In any event, really inappropriate.”

Aug. 4: Glendale, AZ

Metallica only made two changes for their concert at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. They rotated in "The Memory Remains" in the fourth slot and "Hit the Lights" in the 10th spot.

Metallica paid tributes to fellow musicians in both happy and sad ways during their Rose Bowl concert Saturday night. Just as they did for Chris Cornell on May 19, they dedicated "The Unforgiven" to recently departed Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington .

Later in the show they honored hometown heroes Van Halen by performing the first minute of "Runnin' With the Devil," complete with James Hetfield gamely attempting to replicate David Lee Roth's famous whoops. Here's hoping the full version makes the next Garage Days collection!

At the Festival d’Ete in Quebec, Metallica brought back both “Harvester of Sorrow“ and “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" for the first time since May 21 in Columbus. “Whiplash” and “Fight Fire With Fire” were also rotated into the set list.

Prior to “Seek and Destroy” in Detroit, the band brought out a young girl named Kendalynn, who banged on Lars Ulrich’s drums for a few seconds before the band launched into the song. Metallica later referred to her as an “ honorary fifth member ” of the group.

July 12: Detroit, MI

"The Memory Remains" takes the place of "Fuel," another song from 1997's Reload . "Motorbreath," from their early years, replaces the newly installed "Four Horsemen." "Fight Fire With Fire" is also subbed with "Blackened."

"Fuel" and "Fight Fire With Fire" were back in the rotation in San Antonio, but the biggest surprise was that "The Four Horsemen" was played for only the second time on the tour.

June 9: Newton, IA

Metallica's first concert in Iowa since 2008 was a benefit for the Native Fund, a non-profit set up by actor Ashton Kutcher and former Indianapolis Colt Dallas Clark to provide help to Iowans in time of disaster. The band dedicated "Sad but True" to their friends in Slipknot , who are from Iowa.

June 7: Denver, Colorado

After enduring an hour-plus rain delay prior to their May 21 show in Columbus, and a forty-five minute one at their June 4 St. Louis concert, Metallica were forced to leave the stage in the middle of their June 7 show in Denver due to a lightning storm. As you can see here, they slyly addressed the delay by playing a brief section of the title track from their 1984 album "Ride the Lightning."

Sadly, since the venue had a fixed curfew, the band had to cut two songs - "Halo on Fire" and "Nothing Else Matters" - from their planned set list.

June 4: St. Louis, Missouri

After a three-week break, Metallica returned to the road with a set list that featured about a dozen of the same songs they'd played every other night, along with four "wildcards" which had all been played before on this tour.

May 21: Columbus, OH

For their headlining slot at Rock on the Range, Metallica, for the second consecutive night, did not premiere any songs. However, they brought "Creeping Death" back into the set list for the first time since Philadelphia. “Harvester of Sorrow,” “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and "Blackened" -- all of which premiered in Uniondale, also returned, as did "Whiplash."

Tribute to Chris Cornell

During their May 19 concert at Gillette Stadium, Metallica twice paid tribute to Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell , who died the day before. After "The Unforgiven," James Hetfield said, "We forgive you, Chris." Later, bassist Robert Trujillo played the melody of "Black Hole Sun" during his solo.

May 19: Foxborough, MA

This marked the first stop on Metallica's tour where there were no debuts. The set list was identical to the MetLife Stadium date earlier in the week, with one exception: "Motorbreath" was played instead of "Whiplash."

May 17: Uniondale, NY

Perhaps in consideration of the notion that some fans may have recently attended their show in nearby East Rutherford three days earlier, Metallica added five tour debuts to the set list for their Long Island show. Among the new arrivals were the title track from Ride the Lightning , two songs from ...And Justice for All and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" from Master of Puppets . They also broke out "The Four Horsemen," adding more fuel to our theory that they're trying to play every single song from Kill 'Em All on this tour. (Hopefully, we get "No Remorse" in Columbus on Sunday.)

May 14: East Rutherford, NJ

For the third show on their Worldwired tour, Metallica put "Fuel" back in the cleanup spot. They also seem to be using the 10th song in every set to highlight a different track from Kill 'Em All ; tonight it was the tour debut of "Whiplash." Lastly, they changed up the encore for the first time, replacing "Battery" with Ride the Lightning 's opening "Fight Fire With Fire." According to Setlist.fm , it's the first time they've played that song on American soil in over five years.

"Now That We're Dead" Drum Jam

During "Now That We're Dead," all four members participate in a drum jam that premiered earlier this year in Mexico City. You can see it at 6:36 of the video from the Philadelphia concert below. It starts with James Hetfield and Hammett pounding out rhythms on giant drums, with Trujillo and Lars Ulrich joining. The drumming lasts nearly two-and-a-half minutes, after which Hetfield plays a guitar solo using one of his drumsticks.

According to Ulrich, the idea came from the frontman. "I know it's been on Hetfield's laundry list for some time to experiment with a drum piece," he told Newsday . "He's always been a bit of a closet drummer, so he suggested that we all somehow stitch together a drum interlude."

May 12: Philadelphia, PA

For the second stop of the tour, Metallica made two changes to the set list. In the fourth slot, they played Reload 's "Fuel" instead of "Creeping Death" from Ride the Lightning . Then, in the 10th spot, they replaced one Kill 'Em All song -- "Hit the Lights" -- with another "Motorbreath."

On the opening night of their tour, Metallica wasted no time in letting it be known that they were pumped to premiere their new material. The first two songs -- and five of the first nine -- came from Hardwired . They even used the premieres as the showcases for their solos, with a four-man drum jam coming during "Now That We're Dead" (see below) and Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo soloing after "Halo on Fire." The second half, which included a three-song encore, consisted largely of their biggest hits.
