The Ohio River rolls and roils along, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Cairo, Illinois. It’s the largest tributary by volume of the Mississippi River.
In fact, at its confluence with the Mississippi, the Ohio (Seneca for “good river”) is considerably more mighty than the mighty Mississippi itself!
How mighty? Consider: The Ohio River is 981 miles long, flows through or borders six states, and is home to more than 25 million people — about 10 percent of the U.S. population (in the Ohio River basin).

For example, we offer an eight-day trip from lovely little Alton, Illinois (actually on the Mississippi River not far from St. Louis, Missouri), to Louisville, Kentucky. The trip begins on a high note in Alton, site of the last debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in October 1858.
Many of our trips provide convenient dry-land travel on board our “Hop-On/Hop-Off” buses. These buses (which look just like our ships!) travel alongside our cruises from port to port, so you’ll be able to take exciting shore excursions without the hassle of worrying about ground transport.
