Chasing Haunted Tales with Ghosts of Stratford

by Stephanie · Published October 26, 2017 · Updated June 15, 2021

The end of summer sun was beginning to set. Wandering down Stratford’s York Street, with its red-bricked buildings and their rust coloured fire escapes, I already felt transported back in time. The humidity of the day waned with a light breeze to welcome the night. It couldn’t have been a more perfect night for a Stratford ghost walk.

Our group gathered outside Edison’s Café Bar & Inn, just before the clock struck 8pm. Dusk settled in. I turned to look for our possible guide, not sure what to expect. Then, as if appearing out of the Perth County Courthouse, came a pair. Faces white, eyes darkened – by time or makeup, I chose not to ponder. She in a pale pink dress, with crinoline creating a bell shape, and a bonnet that all screamed she’d gone before her time. He with simple black trousers, black vest, and a peasant blouse. Atop his head a sad, black chapeau, and cradled in his arms a small guitar. He strummed a tune as they floated towards us with wide eyes. They were Euphemia and Edward. Ghosts of Stratford, here to take us back in time to experience Stratford’s dark and haunted past.

Our Stratford ghost walk started in front of Edison’s Café Bar & Inn, where it turns out Thomas Edison once lived. Edison lived briefly in Stratford as a teenager. He worked for the Grand Trunk Railway. But after a near tragic accident, caused by his negligence, he quickly moved back with his parents in the USA.

As darkness blanketed the streets of downtown Stratford we were led across the river and onto hallow ground. Standing before the dark St. James Anglican Church, built in 1870, with gravestones flanking the path we stood on, Euphemia spoke of harrowing tales. Tales of premature burials. Yes, people were terrifyingly buried alive on the ground before us. After nightmarish stories of people with bloody fingernails from desperately digging at their wooden boxes, I shrunk to the back of the group. People suffocating due to lack of oxygen. I dared not even try to imagine this horror. But because of those horrible happenings instruments were put in place to ensure you weren’t buried alive. Like bells for you to ring, and hopefully alert someone.

Our ghostly guides really knew how to set the moment. Euphemia with her sharp and hushed story telling. Matched with Edward’s strum of the guitar, a near echo of my racing heartbeat. And always, her wide, darting eyes. I could barely tear my eyes away from her, at times, penetrating gaze.

Staying close together we made our way into one of Stratford’s historic residential neighbourhoods, dating back to the 1860’s. Here, we paused before the William Buckingham Home. Built in 1880, in an Italianate design, we all peered into the upstairs window, with the only light on in the house. It’s said that it’s haunted by a young girl who killed herself within. It was striking how many homes, simple or grand in design, that are said to be haunted in this quiet neighbourhood. But with their age, it was no surprise there also lies a past.

One of the grand homes we stopped in front of was the Annie Macpherson Home. A two-story building with dormers that peered down on us. It was the epitome of a classic haunted looking house. This heritage home was once home to English orphans, dating back to 1869, who were brought overseas for a ‘better life’. Sadly, I don’t think many found that ‘better life’. It’s said some of the children never truly left and still haunt its hallways.

With a quickened pace we wandered back along the river. The only light from Edward’s wee flashlight. The night felt even darker and made more oppressive after tales of ghosts that haunt the riverside. One of the Stratford ghosts was a headless man who haunts the shores of the Avon River.

Related Post: Chasing Ghosts in York

The next stop was the new old jail. Built in 1886, it stands with odd sized windows and other strange architectural details. This wasn’t just a jail. It also had a sick ward and a mental ward. One of its ghosts is a young girl from that sick ward who died of scarlet fever.

Our last stop on our Stratford ghost walk was the striking and, at night, spooky Perth County Courthouse. We stood at the base of the courthouse steps, basking in a golden light. But just behind us stood tall spruce trees whose branches appeared to weep along with the last haunted tale. Turns out Stratford had its own Jack the Ripper just after the horrid London attacks, in 1894. A drifter named Almede Chattelle was convicted of the murder of 13-year-old Jessie Keith. She was found mutilated, throat slit and abdomen slashed, just like Jack the Ripper’s victims. Chattelle became the first man to be hanged in Stratford’s jail, with hundreds in attendance.

Ghosts of Stratford

Okay, so maybe I’m a little melodramatic. But I love ghost walks . And love letting myself be swept away by the pure theatrics of it. The Ghosts of Stratford ghost walk is put on by actors from the Playmakers Theatre School. These theatrical walking tours run during the summer, as well as during late October for Halloween.

There are a few different tours to choose from ranging from the God’s Acre Tour, which is the one we took, to a Pubs, Pilsners and Spirits Tour where you can enjoy a few pints along with tales of haunted taverns. And of course, you can enjoy a Stratford ghost walk for Halloween too!

Would dare to take a Stratford Ghost Walk?

I was a guest of Visit Stratford and the Ghosts of Stratford ghost walk. But as always all opinions are my own.

Superstitions, ghosts and goblins highlight the month of October at the Stratford Festival.

Renowned Shakespeare scholar Sir Stanley Wells calls in from the “other Stratford” – where he is honorary president of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust – to speak with artistic director Antoni Cimolino in the Meighen Forum’s final Celebrated Speaker event of the year.

Via a media release, the Festival said the Meighen Forum will also offer a hint of Halloween throughout the month with such events as  Goblin:Macbeth  – a spontaneous theatre event by Rebecca Northan with Bruce Horak – and  Theatrical Superstitions , hosted by David Prosser with Seana McKenna.

The festival’s ever-popular Ghost Tours of the Avon Theatre also return Oct. 16-30 thanks to seasonal demand for this behind-the-scenes offering.

The tours begin as twilight falls and guests are led on a backstage exploration filled with lore about ghostly apparitions that wander in the historic theatre.

In the special Celebrated Speaker event on Oct. 22, Cimolino and Wells have an in-depth conversation in which they explore the findings of Sir Stanley’s latest book  What Was Shakespeare Really Like?

In a tale of three goblins stumbling upon the complete works of William Shakespeare, Northan, Horak and Ellis Lalonde "blend improvisation, fantasy and tragedy in an electrifying and fresh interpretation of the classic play  Macbeth," the festival says in a news release.  Performances run from Oct. 12 to 28 at the Studio Theatre.

This October, mark Friday the 13 th  with a look at theatrical superstitions, as host Prosser is joined by veteran actor and director McKenna, Dr. Ross Stuart, emeritus professor of theatre at York University, and stage manager Cynthia Toushan to have a discussion about the mysterious traditions carried out by theatre practitioners the world over.

Ghosts of stratford theatrical walking tours: halloween edition.

Dr. Jessie Voigts's picture

When in Stratford, Ontario, be sure to go on the Ghosts of Stratford Theatrical Walking Tours' summer tours and haunted pub tours, which meander through Stratford's streets and parks by one or two spirits in full costume and makeup...but for Halloween, they go all out!

Ghosts of Stratford Theatrical Walking Tours: Halloween Edition

Photo: Nicholas Russon

Join the Ghosts of Stratford for a special Halloween Edition:  a look at the city's history from the "Other Side".  As darkness falls, costumed guides will appear to lead you on a candlelit tour through the ghostly and ghastly events of Stratford's past. Stories, music, jokes, riddles, and macabre vignettes will haunt your dreams. Tours run in gloomy or rainy weather, so please dress appropriately (costumes are welcome!) and join them....if you dare!

Memory. From Ghosts of Stratford Theatrical Walking Tours: Halloween Edition

Dates for this year's walk are Fri.Oct.25, Sat.Oct.26, Tues.Oct.29 and Wed.Oct.30 – all at 8 pm.

The Halloween tours are led by Dr. Emmanuel Blood and his assistant, doctor-in-training Zephyr Darkwood. They recount tales of Stratford's dark and haunted past during a walk through the atmospheric park area surrounding Gallery Stratford, starting on Delamere Avenue at the entrance to Arboretum Park.

Dr. Blood. From Ghosts of Stratford Theatrical Walking Tours: Halloween Edition

These two ghostly characters are supported by a number of additional apparitions and sprits (approximately 25 this year), performed by actors from Playmakers! Theatre School. The appartitions are also in full costume and makeup: they can be seen lurking at a distance, or closing in to offer the audience riddles and vignettes that add to the creepy atmosphere.

Orphans. From Ghosts of Stratford Theatrical Walking Tours: Halloween Edition

Stories include Henry Derry, Stratford's own headless wanderer who is known to walk the riverbanks frightening tourists; MacPherson House, residence of the "home children" from the U.K. (not all of whom have actually left the premises, according to the owners); the exorcism that chased away a very helpful ghost named Anna while the owners of her abode were away on vacation (she's back now, thankfully!); and the haunting of Stratford's "new" jail (1885) by Almede Chattelle, who was convicted, hanged and buried there, in an unmarked grave (his remains were discovered during renovations in 2011) for the notorious murder of Jessie Keith.

Mr. Derry. From Ghosts of Stratford Theatrical Walking Tours: Halloween Edition

And, of course, join Ghosts of Stratford Theatrical Walking Tours tours in 2020:

Summer: Stroll with Euphemia and Edward Elphinstone on the God's Acre tour: selected Saturday evenings in July & August

Fall: Pubs, Pilsners & SPIRITS Tours: selected Thursday evenings in October/November.

Table of Contents

Are you looking for the best things to do in Stratford, Ontario? Look no further.

There is something for everyone in this quaint Canadian town, from unique food options to stunning architecture and fascinating history.

Whether you’re looking for weekend getaway ideas or simply want to know what to do in Stratford for a day, there’s something here that’s sure to please you.

From boutique shopping and art galleries to famous theatre performances and outdoor recreational activities like kayaking, the possibilities are endless!

Having lived in Ontario, I can tell you that Stratford is one of the most beautiful places to visit.  We used to go at least once a year every year of high school so I could go see plays for my theatre class.

We’d always get the full day to explore before the show, so I’ve adventured around the whole city and done all the best things they have to offer.

So read on to find out what you can do in Stratford to get the most out of your visit.

About Stratford Ontario

Stratford is a small city in Perth County with approximately 32,000 people. It’s nestled between Toronto and London in southwestern Ontario and boasts a rich history and vibrant culture.

Now known as a festival city, Stratford was first settled as a small town in 1832. Named after Stratford-upon-Avon in England, home to William Shakespeare, this small city grew into a flourishing hub for agriculture and industry.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that Stratford became an internationally recognized location for theater enthusiasts with the establishment of Tom Patterson’s world-renowned Stratford Festival.

The Stratford Festival is the largest arts festival in North America today.

You can explore the city’s history at the Stratford Perth Museum, but it is also evident in its preserved Victorian architecture.

Best Things to Do in Stratford, Ontario

1. Attend the Stratford Festival

The most popular Stratford attraction is the world-renowned Stratford Festival, which runs from April to October each year.

The flagship theater is the Festival Theatre, where some of their most popular plays have taken place, including recent hits such as Chicago. There are three other theaters as well: the Studio Theatre, the Tom Patterson Theatre, and the Avon Theatre.

Every season promises something special with a wide range of Shakespearean comedies, tragedies, musicals, and contemporary plays to suit all ages and tastes, and it produces some of the best theatrical productions you’ll see.

We went annually to see the different productions. My favourite was “The Importance of Being Earnest”.

2. Visit the Shakespearean Gardens

Located close to the Perth County Courthouse and a short walk from downtown, a visit to the Shakespearean gardens in Stratford is a must-do!

Built on the site of the former 19th-century Dufton Woollen Mill, the gardens are a tranquil place for taking a relaxing stroll along one of the trails or along the banks of the River Avon.

There are over 60 types of plants, and some are mentioned in Shakespeare’s works.

It’s a great place to visit, especially during the spring and summertime when the flowers are in full bloom.

3. The Stratford Perth Museum

The Stratford Perth Museum showcases the area’s history through interactive exhibits and fun activities.

The museum hosts special events throughout the year, such as lectures, workshops, and more.

Whether you’re looking for a quick stopover or an entire day dedicated to learning about the local history, the Stratford Perth Museum is worth a visit.

4. The Bacon and Ale Trail

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Stratford, then this self-guided tour is it.

The Bacon and Ale Trail is where you get to learn all about Stratford’s brewing and pork history. You can sample savory pork dishes and unique craft beers at some of the 17 local businesses.

To take part, you can buy vouchers in downtown Stratford at several locations, such as Destination Stratford , and choose which five stops to redeem your vouchers at.

5. Black Swan Brewing

This is the perfect microbrewery and taproom if you’re a craft beer lover or just want to try something new.

This downtown Stratford brewery specializes in producing handcrafted ales and lagers. With a regularly changing selection of beers, it has established itself as one of Ontario’s premier craft beer destinations.

You can sample a few beers as part of the Bacon and Ale Trail. The on-site taproom makes a great spot to relax and enjoy craft beer with friends.

6. Tom Patterson Theatre

Located in downtown Stratford, Ontario, and overlooking the Avon River, the Tom Patterson Theatre is a state-of-the-art venue known for its quality productions.

It has become the perfect setting for a variety of performances, from world-famous actors to local up-and-coming talent. Not to mention, it hosts events such as educational lectures, comedy shows, and more.

Even if you don’t catch a play, a backstage theatre tour is an exciting way to learn about the history of Stratford and this iconic theatre.

7. Stratford City Hall

This building needs to be on your places to go in Stratford list, especially if you’re into history and architecture.

Spanning 140 years, this 19th-century Victorian-styled red-bricked structure, set in a triangle town square, is an impressive sight. It burned down in 1879 but was soon restored to its original state.

Stratford City Hall was included in the national historic sites of Canada in 1976. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for a charming venue to snap some photos.

8. Stratford Art in the Park

This event is held from May to September on Lakeside Drive, bringing together talented artists who create exceptional art pieces.

Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir or want to browse and admire some beautiful one-of-a-kind creations, Stratford Art in the Park is definitely worth checking out.

You can find art pieces ranging from pottery and paintings to sculptures and jewelry, all made by local artisans.

9. Gallery Stratford

Gallery Stratford is a public art gallery located in the historic old pump house just a short stroll from downtown.

It provides an excellent opportunity to explore regional and Canadian art. And if you’re keen to express your own creativity, they also hold workshops and classes available to everyone.

Don’t forget to take a walk around the beautiful surrounding parkland and outdoor sculptures.

10. Stratford Farmers’ Market

Open every Saturday morning from 7:00 am to noon at McCarthy Road. The year-round Stratford Farmers’ Market is a great way to support local businesses while exploring the local food culture.

The market features various vendors selling everything from fresh farm produce and artisanal bread to handmade crafts, cheeses, and local art.

There are also some great food trucks if you get hungry while walking around.

11. Take a Cooking Class

The Stratford Chef’s School isn’t only for budding chefs. Every spring and summer, they hold “Open Kitchen” cooking classes where anyone can learn a whole range of cooking skills and techniques, from baking desserts to mastering an international dish.

Taking a cooking class probably isn’t one of the things you’d think of doing when visiting Stratford, but the Chef’s School has a fantastic reputation, and the classes are great fun.

12. Stratford Chocolate Trail

Introducing one of the best things to do in Stratford, the self-guided chocolate trail. If your idea of a perfect day out is sampling chocolate and exploring the city, then you’re going to love this.

After purchasing the six coupons to participate, you have over 20 locations where you can redeem them to get your chocolate fix. If you think you need more than six coupons, you can always buy more, as it would be unfair not to try them all.

Stratford has some amazing chocolatiers.

This is where my friends and I spent all of our allowances every time we visited.

13. Rheo Thompson Candies

Rheo Thompson Candies is one of the best chocolatiers in Stratford.

Their delicious chocolates and candies are made with the best ingredients, including sustainable cocoa, ensuring you get the best-tasting treats possible.

They have 152 products, including their famous Mint Smoothies®, which are the unofficial “official” chocolate of Stratford.

You can redeem a coupon for the chocolate trail here . It has a great atmosphere and great staff.

14. Avon Boat Rentals

Paddle boat, canoe, kayak, or even take a river tour on the Avon River.

Renting a boat at Avon Boat Rentals is a great way to spend an afternoon. From gorgeous river views to spotting Canada Geese and riverside wildlife, you’ll have a relaxing time just getting away from it all.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a sandwich or wrap at The Boathouse Patio and take in the scenery for a while.

15. Visit Alley Cat Cafe

This charming cafe is the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee. And for just a small fee, you get to enjoy tea or coffee, a homemade treat, and a cuddle with rescued cats .

All of the cats are adoptable!

I don’t think my dog Theo would be too happy if I brought a cat home. Even if you’re not looking to adopt one, you’re still supporting a great cause just by visiting them.

16. Downtown Stratford Retail Therapy

With its unique mix of Victorian architecture and modern boutiques, you will certainly find something to take home with you.

From fashion finds to home decor items and specialty foods, the selection of shops in this artsy downtown area is diverse enough to satisfy any shopper looking for something different.

One of the oldest and best stores to browse around is Bradshaws . This shop has everything, and you can find some great unique gifts here.

A photo of tacos with fillings surrounded by green lemons.

Cactus Taco Shop is the perfect spot for an evening out with friends and just sitting on the outside patio area.

18. Self-Guided Audio Walking Tour

Apart from the famous Bacon and Ale and the Chocolate Trail tours, there are other self-guided walking audio tours to help you explore the city.

These tours, like the Bronze Stars of Stratford and the Art Walk, will take you around the city, highlighting some of the most notable attractions.

You can travel at your own pace, spending as much or as little time as you want at each location.

19. Walk in Justin Bieber’s Footsteps

While you’re exploring all that Stratford has to offer, don’t miss out on the chance to experience a Justin Bieber-themed journey through history!

You’ll follow in Justin’s footsteps from where he used to hang out to the steps of the Avon Theatre, where he used to busk.

No Justin Bieber visit would be complete without a stop at the Stratford Perth Museum, which displays the singer’s whole journey.

This was something we were really excited about as kids, but now it seems less impressive.

20. Forage With Puck’s Plenty

If you’re looking for a truly unique activity in Stratford, I highly suggest going foraging with Puck’s Plenty.

You get to explore the outdoors, connect with nature, and have the opportunity to take home some delicious wild edibles.

The knowledgeable and friendly staff are experts at leading groups into hidden corners of the Ontario countryside, where you’ll discover all sorts of mushrooms, berries, and plants to snack on or take home.

21. Stay in Luxury at The Bruce

Every year, the whole town turns out for the swan parade, which usually takes place on the first Sunday in April.

People line up along the riverbanks to watch the 25 or so beautiful swans migrate back from their nearby wintering grounds.

Stratford police line the way, playing pipes and drums, which the swans follow down to the water.

Canada Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Canada travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧 Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Canada?

Yes  — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Canada! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you’ll need to rent a car. ( Read more )

📲  Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe  — Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com . For hostels, I use Hostel World . If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend  Skyscanner .

🎫  Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not  — US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do ( check here! ). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.
