Portugal Visa FAQs

A Portugal Schengen visa is a special kind of visa which allows you to travel among all the Schengen countries including Portugal for a maximum period of upto 90 days. This is a traveller’s dream where with one visa you can travel to any of the other 25 Schengen countries along with Portugal.

In India, The Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi and The Consulate General of Portugal in Goa are the sole representatives of Portugal, who issue visas for their country.

The Embassy and Consulate General of Portugal issues visas for Portugal and Schengen visa which is common to all Schengen States. The Schengen visa issued by the Embassy/Consulate gives an applicant access to 26 Schengen countries in totality. However, the Schengen Visa applications will only be accepted by Portugal Visa Application Centre if Portugal is the country of maximum stay. Should the duration of the stay be the same in several Schengen States, then Portugal must be the first point of entry.

A Schengen Visa (issued by a consulate or embassy of a Schengen State) is valid for all 26 States of the Schengen Area (including the European territory of Portugal), unless it is marked otherwise on the visa sticker. So you do not need another visa to enter or stay in the European territory of Portugal. However, you must be in possession of documentary evidence for the reasons of your stay and your means of support. Schengen Area comprises of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The Schengen Visa is a short stay visa and takes the form of a sticker affixed to your passport. The definition of “short stay” is a stay of "90 days in any 180 days period". This means that the total duration of stay is of maximum 90 days in any period of 180 days. The precise length of validity of your Schengen Visa is indicated on the visa sticker under the heading “Duration of visit”. With a single-entry visa you can enter the Schengen area only once. This is indicated on the visa sticker under the heading "Number of entries" by "1". A two-entry or a multiple-entry visa allows for two or several entries during the validity of the Schengen Visa. This is indicated on the visa sticker by "02" or "MULT" under the heading "Number of entries".

No, not necessarily all Schengen Visas will be granted for 90 days. You may get the Schengen Visa only for the number of days that you present in your travel itinerary and your flight & hotel bookings

You may appeal against this decision. The decision to refuse a Schengen visa and the reasons for the refusal are notified using a standard form that is handed out by the Member State's consulate that refused the visa. The notification of the refusal must include the reasons, on which the refusal were based, and the procedures and deadlines for submitting an appeal. You are free to re-apply again if your application has been refused earlier. However, it is recommended that you take note of the reasons for the earlier refusal before submitting a new application and make amendments, where necessary. The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. The visa fee covers the cost of the examination of the visa application.

The Schengen Visa cover letter is a letter which summarizes your intent to travel to a country that is part of the Schengen area. In your cover letter you should explain:

- the purpose of your trip - when and where you intend to travel - how your trip is going to be funded - day-by-day itinerary for your trip - duration of the trip

You cannot extend your Portugal short-stay while in Portugal except in special circumstances, and exceeding your permitted period of stay is considered an act of illegality or criminality. Instead, you must return to your home country within the permitted period of stay and apply for another Portugal Visa if necessary.

Schengen visas may allow for a single-entry or multiple entries. With a single-entry visa you can enter the Schengen area only once. This is indicated on the visa sticker by "01". With a visa allowing for two or multiple entries you may enter twice or several times during the validity of the visa.

A short-stay Schengen Visa allows you to enter and stay in a Portugal territory for a maximum period of 90 days within a period of six months.

You may only submit your Schengen visa application 90 days before your date of departure. We recommend that you apply at least 20 working days before the date you wish to depart as certain types of travel purpose may take longer than usual to process. For instance, the processing time of your Schengen Visa Application will take between 5-15 working days from your appointment date.

Typically, a Portugal Visa (Schengen Visa) takes anywhere from 10 to 15 days to process in the Portugal Embassy/Consulate. The processing time for a Portugal Visa is dependent on several factors and can change without notice at the consulate's discretion. This period may be extended up to 30 days or 60 days.

VFS Global Services Pvt Ltd (VFS) is the Service Delivery Provider for the Embassy of Portugal in Delhi. The role of VFS is to accept visa applications and to dispatch passports and documents back to clients, on behalf of the Embassy of Portugal. VFS does not play any part in or influence the outcome of your visa application.

When your application is registered in the VFS system, you will be issued a receipt for the fees that you have paid and an acknowledgement receipt of the acceptance of your passport will be given to you.

Applicants can check the status of Portugal visa application online using the Portugal VFS Reference number and Date of Birth. Kindly visit the Track Your Application section of the Portugal VFS website.

As an application centre, the Portugal Visa Application Centre (VFS) will not be able to guarantee you a visa. The issuance or refusal of a Portugal visa is the sole prerogative of The Embassy/Consulate General of Portugal. The Portugal Visa Application Centre cannot influence this decision in any way.

Yes, an appointment is mandatory for Portugal Visa in order to provide your biometrics and submit your visa documents.

Yes. Personal Interview is mandatory for all first time travellers and applicants who haven’t travelled to any Schengen country in the last 3 years.

No. A long stay visa or a residence permit issued by a Schengen State allows you to travel or stay in other Schengen States, while respecting the maximum duration of a “short stay” (a stay of "90 days in any 180 day period")

Every member of the family needs an individual appointment.

The Schengen area covers 26 countries ("Schengen States") without border controls between them. These countries are: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. These countries apply the common visa policy for short stay Visas. This Visa allows you to travel through Portugal and the Schengen area for up to 90 days.

Schengen Visa must be applied from the Embassy / Consulate of the country where you will be staying for maximum number of days. If your stay has equal number of days in each country then you must apply to the Embassy / Consulate of the country which would serve as the first port of entry.

Schengen Visas may allow for a single-entry or multiple entries. With a single-entry visa you can enter the Schengen area only once. This is indicated on the visa sticker by "01". With a visa allowing for two or multiple entries you may enter twice or several times during the validity of the Schengen Visa.

According to the EU, a single-entry Schengen Visa allows entry to the Schengen area only once, meaning you are not permitted to re-enter the Schengen Area after leaving, while a multiple-entry Schengen Visa allows multiple entries into the Schengen Area within the visa’s validity period (90 days total within 180-day period).

The short-stay visa does not automatically entitle you to enter the Schengen area. At the border (or during other controls) you may have to show the visa but also provide additional documentation, for example; sufficient evidence that you have sufficient means to cover the stay and the return trip. It is therefore recommended that you carry with you copies of the documents which you presented when applying for the Schengen visa (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations, other documents stating the purpose of your stay).

Yes, applications by mail will not be accepted. The Schengen visa application should be presented in person because biometrical data must be recorded.

Family members of EU citizens who have exercised their right of free movement (meaning that the EU citizen resides in or travels to a Member State other than his/her country of origin) benefit from certain procedural facilitations. The basic criteria to be fulfilled are the following:

  • the EU citizen has exercised his/her right of free movement
  • the family member (applicant) belongs to one of the categories covered by Directive 2004/38/EC
  • the family member (applicant) accompanies the EU citizen or joins him/her in the Schengen State of destination.

As from 2nd November 2015 following the introduction of the Visa Information System (VIS), all Schengen visa applicants in India have to appear in person in order to provide biometric data (fingerprints and digital photography). The photograph can be digitally taken at the time of the application or scanned from an existing one. For subsequent applications within the 5 years the fingerprints can be copied from the previous application file in the VIS. In case of reasonable doubt regarding the identity of the applicant, the consulate will again collect fingerprints within the 5 year period specified above. Furthermore, the applicant may request that they be collected if, at the time when the application is lodged, it cannot be immediately confirmed that the fingerprints were collected within this 5 years period.

Yes. Applicants should prove that they are in possession of adequate and valid travel insurance to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death, during their stay(s) on the territory of the Schengen Member States. The insurance should be valid throughout the territory of the Member States and cover the entire period of the person’s intended stay or transit. The minimum coverage must be EUR 30000.

Your travel Insurance plan for a Schengen Visa must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros (approx. USD $34,000)
  • Coverage for repatriation for medical reasons
  • Coverage for emergency medical treatment
  • Coverage for expenses resulting from your death
  • Coverage for the entire period of your intended stay
  • Valid in all Schengen Area countries

Even though Travel Insurance is a mandatory requirement for processing Schengen Visa, you are strongly advised to purchase a health / travel insurance to secure yourself as medical treatment can be very expensive in the Schengen country. Your travel insurance offers protection against unexpected emergencies on international travel such as coverage of medical expenses, flight delay and cancellations, passport and baggage loss or personal accident.  For financial safety and security on your international trip we highly recommend you to purchase travel insurance and avail our special offer.

Portugal travel guide

Portugal is one of Europe’s oldest extant nations, an ancient kingdom defended by hilltop castles and dramatic walled towns. Read more

Beaches and high mountains aside, the rest of Portugal is a diverse and verdant country of deep valleys and rolling hills dotted with stone-built villages. For generations, families have eked out a living from the steeply terraced vineyards of the mountainous north, and from the cork oak plantations roamed by wild boar that dominate the vast agricultural plains of the south. Portugal’s prestige and economy have never regained the heights they attained during the golden ages of the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. The country spent most of the twentieth century in deep poverty under the dictatorial rule of Prime Minister Dr Salazar, and while joining the European Union had great initial benefits – funding new roads and communications – Portugal has struggled badly in the recent years of economic crisis. Yet although it remains one of the EU’s weakest economies, Portugal is a remarkably unified country – there are no minorities agitating for independence, while rivalry between the north and south consists of little more than gentle mockery. Indeed Portugal is generally a very tolerant nation, and has integrated a substantial population from its former colonies in Africa, Asia and Brazil with relative ease. Contemporary Portuguese tastes are influenced by the flavors, sounds and styles of Brazil, Angola and Mozambique in particular.

It’s a Catholic country – there are ancient churches in every community – and while support for the institutions of the Church may have waned, a belief in traditional values remains. The Portuguese have embraced contemporary life without ever quite getting rid of the more appealing aspects of previous centuries. Fully wired town centres have Wi-Fi hotspots and cell-phone shops by the score, but they also have a butcher, a baker and (quite literally) a candle-stick maker. Children will be both seen and heard at any time of the day or night, as the family remains at the centre of most things. When times were hard at home, the Portuguese traditionally emigrated to pastures new, but their homeland’s blend of tolerance and tradition, its bucolic scenery and year-round sunshine, persuade most emigrants to return at some stage – and it is this same allure that makes the country so appealing to visitors. Prepare to be charmed.

Places to visit in Portugal

Start the year off right by waking up in Madeira. This subtropical island system has become one of the trendiest destinations in Portugal for hiking, spending warm days by the seaside as a winter sun retreat, and eating exotic food, plus, the capital Funchal offers one of the best New Year’s Eve parties in the world. You’ll get the festive feel, without the cold weather of home. If you can’t head over for New Year’s, no problem; visiting the main island and smaller, adjacent islands is always a good plan and Porto Santo is where beach enthusiasts will find one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in Portugal. Other landmarks in Madeira and the smaller islands include the house that once belonged to Christopher Columbus, the Cristiano Ronaldo Museum, called Museu CR7, and the Madeira Wine Museum. Visit our article for more on escaping to Madeira in the Autumn.

Don’t miss Portugal’s second largest city. It may seem a lot like the capital since both are characterized by old, colorful buildings sprawled across hilly streets and they sit beside major rivers, but Porto is the yin to Lisbon’s yang. Where Lisbon is literally bright and sunny, Porto shines with culture. Anyone who loves Portugal’s azulejos tiles shouldn’t miss the São Bento railway station, which offers a stunning mosaic of tiles, transforming the walls into memorable works of art. There is no shortage of gardens, medieval palaces, and cathedrals, and the cuisine is often referred to as the best in the country. Known for its famous Port wine, Porto’s stretches of vineyards make up most of the nearby Douro Valley.

The capital continues to sit at the top of travel itineraries, and visitors usually can’t wait to sink their teeth into authentic pasteis de nata, try one of the many bacalhau dishes, and explore the Portuguese calçadas (traditional mosaic walkways). Despite the boom in tourism, this continues to be a city that can be explored on a budget and is still one of the most tranquil and affordable capitals in Europe. Visitors can anticipate winding, narrow roads, and phenomenal lookout points; walking around at night is also a treat. In Alfama, mouthwatering aromas and wistful melodies (known as fado) drift from cozy restaurants that line the narrow, cobblestone labyrinth of streets. Don’t miss Chiado, the trendy district with the oldest bookstore in the world, or boho-chic Bairro Alto, which comes alive at night. Great weather and plenty of sunlight means there’s never a bad time to visit Lisbon.

4. Ericeira

Surfing is one of the main attractions in Portugal, and Ericeira is a small fishing village with a big reputation for catching waves. It’s also easy to get to from Lisbon, and while it’s not the closest beach town to the capital, it is one of the busiest. However, sitting along the cliffs that fringe the coast and watching surfers (or surfing yourself) isn’t the only thing to do here; Ericeira’s restaurants are among the top spots for indulging in fresh, delicious Portugese seafood.

Algarve is one of the best places to go to mix warm weather, hiking expeditions, trendy beaches, and even trendier social scenes. Each of the major cities is worth visiting—including Albufeira, Lagos, Vilamoura and Portimão—and a weekend away may convince anyone that heaven exists here on Earth. Tiny treasure troves of jewel-bright waters and mesmerizing cliffs—like Camilo Beach in Lagos—are sprinkled across the region, and don’t worry about not speaking Portuguese if you need directions. Many neighborhoods in the Algarve (if not most), are more English-speaking than Portuguese these days, especially around Albufeira and Vilamoura. Anyone wanting to break away from the Portugese tourist crowds, however, still has plenty of places to visit—a few of the most tranquil towns are Sagres, Tavira, and Aljezur.

6. Alentejo

Break away from the crowds by visiting the Alentejo region. The area’s capital city, Évora, is another lovely spot with a rich history and a mysterious nature that makes it a perfect Halloween destination, especially when taking into consideration the Capela dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones. Inside (and on) the walls of this 16th-century church are approximately 5,000 human skeletons. Of course, tourists shouldn’t miss the other historical sites, like the Roman Temple or Cathedral of Évora, nor overlook visiting one of Alentjo’s most unique hotels. Évora and the nearby villages are ideal retreats into nature where it is possible to hide away, enjoy true comfort food, and indulge in phenomenal wine.

Hans Christian Andersen, the most famous author of children’s fairy tales, once lived in a house in Sintra’s woods, and pleasantly-surprised visitors still stumble across the house while trekking downhill from the city’s many palaces and fortresses. A living fairy tale itself, there’s no shortage of inspiration for imaginations like Andersen’s. Located approximately 30 kilometers from Lisbon, getting to Sintra is easy and makes a great day trip, though you may prefer two or three days to see everything in detail. From the romantic 19th-century Pena Palace to the exquisite Monserrate Palace and medieval Castle of the Moors, the city will overwhelm the senses and transport minds to fictional destinations like Camelot or Westeros.

Speaking of castles, how about visiting a city located within castle walls? Charming, picturesque, and romantic, Óbidos is a great place to bring a camera or smartphone and make your Instagram account more colorful. Expect clusters of white houses framed in bright flowers and souvenir shops ready for tourists. Don’t miss a taste of the Ginja de Óbidos, a cherry liqueur sometimes served in tiny chocolate cups. Once offered as the wedding gift from Portuguese kings to their queens, the city has developed a reputation as one of the most romantic destinations in Portugal. Óbidos has also been labeled a city for book lovers in large part due to the stunning Literary Man Hotel

9. Serra da Estrela

This destination is a little harder to get to, but still well worth the effort. Portugal isn’t all beaches, and Serra da Estrela is home to the highest mountain peak in continental Portugal (the highest in all of Portugal being in Pico Island, Azores). Nature-lovers should take note because the remote mountain range of Serra da Estrela has plenty to see and do, and is the only place to go skiing in winter. Sparsely speckled with tiny villages, including one of the Seven Wonders in Portugal for 2017, the mountain feels rather remote and nature is the main attraction, but foodies may enjoy tasting the homemade honey and the creamy, pungent cheese that are made there.

10. Coimbra

In the country’s center is a city that attracts more visitors than most others in Portugal. Coimbra is home to a high number of Roman and medieval ruins and is another historical center, having once served as the capital of the country. Among the most visited tourist attractions is the University of Coimbra, which is one of the oldest continually-operating, degree-seeking institutions in the world. But its greatest claim to fame is the library; the Baroque-styled Biblioteca Joanina has been listed numerous times as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.

11. São Miguel

Nearly halfway between the American and Portuguese coasts is the Azorean archipelago, and each island is worth a visit. The largest, São Miguel, is the easiest to reach by air, and there’s plenty to see in this rolling green oasis for a thoroughly Azorean experience. Hiking trails, waterfalls, and the beautiful twin lakes called Lagoa das Sete Cidades are only the beginning. But one recommendation not to miss is Furnas. This small village is where visitors can experience the bright side to volcanic power, as the ground is both a place to relax and cook food due to the natural, mineral-rich hot springs and cooking holes called caldeiras.

12. Monsanto

Want to travel back in time? For travelers after a real feel for old Portugal, it doesn’t get better than visiting the most Portuguese village in the country, which has barely changed over hundreds of years. This hidden gem remains widely unknown, and its most special characteristic is obvious upon arrival. The village is built around, in and under huge boulders.

13. Peneda-Gerês National Park

Portugal only has one national park and this is it. Located in Minho, a region known for its beauty, Peneda-Gerês National Park offers oak forests, a winding Roman road with ancient markers, bridges and waterfalls. Camping is allowed in specific parts of the park and some natural pools allow swimming during the warmer months. This is another excellent location to get in a good hike and also for bird-watching.

14. Guimarães

If you have extra time, use it to visit the country’s first capital. In the 12th century, Portugal’s first king, Afonso I, ruled from his birthplace, Guimarães. Since then the city has adopted the reputation and nickname of “The Birthplace of Portugal” and tourists can visit the castle where the king and many other historical figures once resided. Guimarães is easily accessible by car and bus and is only 50 kilometers from Porto.

Tying together old and new is Portugal’s fourth largest city, one of the oldest in the country with a strong, youthful following. In fact, it was labeled the European Youth Capital in 2012 and attracts students from the nearby University of Minho. Brimming with cafés, shops, restaurants and bars, the city is truly vibrant, but it’s also known for its religious side. In addition to the local cathedral being the oldest in the country, the stunning Bom Jesus do Monte is a religious retreat and the cathedral is quite unlike most others. Located on a hill in the woods and surrounded by gardens, visitors can climb the 116 meters of stairs and enjoy a breathtaking view at the top.

Other Portugal Visa types

We currently only process Tourist and Business Visas. Kindly contact the Embassy for the following visa applications.

Portuguese visa requirements depend on the purpose of your visit and how long you intend to stay. If your nationality requires an entry visa or long-term residence permit for Portugal, you will need to apply for the relevant Portuguese visa applicable to your situation, explained below.

1. Schengen short-stay Visa

If you are visiting Portugal as a tourist or intend to stay for less than three months, you can apply for a Portuguese Schengen visa. The Schengen short-stay visa allows you to stay in Portugal, or anywhere in the Schengen area, for a total of 90 days out of an 180-day period.

There are different types of Portuguese Schengen visa:

a. Airport transit visa (Visa A) – allows transit within the international area of an airport, from one flight to another, without entering the Schengen area. This visa is mandatory for all passengers that change flights in a Schengen country airport, unless they are exempt from requiring an entry Portuguese visa.

b. Transit and short-term stay visa (Visa C) – issued for transit and short-term stays in the Schengen area. These visas are valid for a total of 90 days within a six month period, allowing one, two or multiple entries. The most common types of short-stay visas issued are the Portuguese tourist visa and the business visa.

c. Limited Territorial Validity (LTV) Visas – a special visa that allows travel to only one Schengen state, or to certain other Schengen states if specified when applying for the visa. This type of visa may be required in emergency situations where the traveller doesn't possess a valid travel document.

2. Long-stay Portuguese Visas: Temporary stay visas

This is a Portuguese visa that allows a temporary stay for a four-month period with multiple entries. Long-stay Portuguese visas can be granted on any of the following conditions:

  • Medical treatment in a health facility
  • Transfer of workers between countries within the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to provide services or training
  • Temporary employment or self-employment
  • To conduct scientific research or teaching in a higher education establishment
  • To pursue an amateur sports activity
  • Implementation of international commitments
  • To accompany a family member for medical treatment

3. Portuguese residence Visa

This is a Portuguese visa for a four-month period in order to request a residence permit after arrival. This can be granted for any of the following reasons:

  • Employed work
  • Self-employment or entrepreneurial activities
  • Scientific research or teaching
  • Study, student exchange, internship or voluntary service
  • Higher education mobility programmes (for students already residing in Portugal who want to further their studies)
  • Family reunion
  • Pensioners and people with income.

The Portuguese residence visa can be obtained as a Schengen National 'Long-stay' visa (type D) granted to individuals who will be working, studying or permanently residing in a Schengen area country for a set time. This can be issued as a multi-entry visa that allows travel to other Schengen countries, provided the holder meets certain criteria. The Working (Employment) Schengen Visa is the most common type of long-stay visa. If you obtain any type of Portuguese residence visa, you are required to apply for a residence permit upon entering Portugal.

How to apply for a Portugal Visa from India ?

By Axel Strauss Date: 27/11/2023

When Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama opened the first sea route from Western Europe to Asia 500 years ago, India played a key role in his discovery. And ever since, Portugal and India have shared a mutual history in terms of exploration, trade, and culture. Today, millions of people make the voyage between the two countries with ease annually. And that voyage is a lot faster and easier too. However, if you’re planning to trace back Vasco’s steps from India to Portugal in the near future, you might need a Schengen visa . And if so — have no fear — because humble Schengen travel insurance pioneers AXA can help put some wind in your sails. Let’s start with the basics.

Do Indian nationals need a visa to travel to Portugal?

How do i apply for a portugal visa from india, how much does a visa for portugal from india cost, why choose axa schengen insurance for my portugal visa application.

  • FAQ about Portugal for Indian nationals
  • How to apply for other Schengen countries from India?

Yes. Portugal is one of the 27 countries in the Schengen Zone . This means that most non-Schengen-country nationals need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter its borders. And while many countries — such as Brazil, Canada, the U.S., the U.K., the UAE, and so on — have visa-free travel agreements with the Schengen zone, India does not. So if you’re an Indian citizen, you will indeed need a visa to enter Portugal —and any other Schengen country.

And now for the specs. Before you apply, you’ll need to figure out which Portugal Visa works best for you. This will be determined by several factors — the purpose and length of your trip, how many times you plan to visit, and so on.

What type of Schengen visas for Portugal are there?

There are four basic types of Schengen Visa you can choose from. They are business , work , student , and — the most common one — short-stay (aka the “ tourist visa ”). You can also opt for a multiple-entry visa if you plan to travel to Portugal frequently. And you have a few various options if you have a partner living, working, and/or studying in Portugal. An increasingly popular option — specifically for Portugal — is also what’s known as the D7 Residence Visa (aka the “Passive Income Earner Residence Permit”). It’s designed for financially independent individuals who can support themselves without working in Portugal. To be eligible, you’ll need at least €7,200 (or ₹654,723.13) in passive income annually. Meanwhile, the once very popular (and often controversial) “Golden Visa” initiative in Portugal was terminated in 2023 .

When should I apply?

You must apply for your visa no more than six months and no fewer than 15 days before your trip. But make sure to give yourself plenty of time to prep all the paperwork.

What documents do I need to apply for a short-stay Portugal Visa from India?

To apply for a short-stay Portugal Visa from India, you’ll need (at the very least):

  • a Schengen Visa application form;
  • two recently taken passport-style photos;
  • an Indian passport (or other travel documents, if applicable) no older than 10 years and are valid for at least three months after your departure date from Portugal;
  • Travel and medical insurance (covering you up to costs of €30,000, but more on that below);
  • Your flight itinerary;

You might also need:

  • Evidence of legal residence in India (if applicable);
  • A cover letter stating your itinerary and the purpose of your visit (if applicable);
  • A letter of invitation (if applicable);
  • Proof of accommodation (if applicable);
  • Proof of your civil status (such as a marriage certificate, if applicable);
  • Proof of sufficient funds.*

*To enter Portugal, you’ll need to show you have at least €40 (or ₹3,648.59) per day when applying for a Portugal Visa. And each time you enter Portugal’s territory you must have funds of at least €75 (or ₹6,841.10). Although if you can prove your accommodation and food is covered during your stay in Portugal, you may be released from the means of subsistence obligation.

What if I need to get a Portugal Visa to work or study?

If you are planning to work or study in Portugal (for fewer than 90 days), you’ll need a bit more to obtain your visa. And depending on your particular situation, this may include:

  • An employment contract;
  • A recent bank statement;
  • A no-objection letter from your Indian employer;
  • An income tax return;
  • Proof of enrolment at an educational institution in Portugal;
  • A no-objection letter from your current Indian educational institution (if applicable).

Meanwhile, if you plan to study in Portugal for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a national study visa and residency permit — as well as to provide evidence of your enrollment and plans to reside in Portugal. For work visas, you should provide evidence of a salaried employment contract and obtain a residency permit.

Where do I apply for a Portugal Visa in India?

In India, the company VFS Globa l deals with initial applications — before passing them on to Portuguese embassy officials. You can apply online via their website, but you will also need to attend an in-person interview (with aloof the above paperwork) at one of their centers located in :

  • Puducherry,
  • Chandigarh,
  • and Bengaluru.

How long does the application take to process?

Applications should take around 15 days to process . However,in certain cases — and especially during busy periods — it may take up to between 30 and 60 days. So make sure to give yourself plenty of prep time.

The costs of the Schengen Visa are universal — meaning they’re the same in India as anywhere else. The standard fee is €80 (or roughly ₹7,274.70). For children between the ages of six and twelve — it’s €40 (or roughly ₹3,637.35). And children under the age of six can get a Schengen visa for Portugal for free .

NOTE: Those traveling to Portugal for study purposes, research, those under 25 years old traveling with charitable organizations, and those taking part in certain sporting or cultural events may also have their visa fee waived in some circumstances. AXA has more info on how to apply for a Schengen visa from India (not just for Portugal) here . And you can also learn more via the Portuguese government’s official eportal website . Meanwhile, here’s another great way we’re here to help.

Well, because an AXA Schengen travel insurance plan will give you one less big thing to worry about during your Schengen visa application process. First off, all three AXA plans — Low-Cost (starting at as little as €22/week), Europe Travel , and Multi-Trip — meet the necessary requirements for obtaining a Schengen Visa for Portugal. Just in case, those requirements are that your travel insurance plan:

  • Has a minimum coverage of €30,000 in case of medical care, hospitalization, and/or medical repatriation :
  • Is accepted by all 27 countries within the Schengen zone (not just Portugal);
  • Is valid for the entire duration of your trip/stay.

AXA’s plans also have no age restrictions . Moreover, getting an AXA travel insurance plan is quick , easy , and can all be done from the comfort of your home(i.e., online ) in minutes. Once you’ve chosen a plan, the AXA travel insurance certificate can be downloaded (and printed) online instantly too. And it is accepted by all Schengen embassies and consulates — including the Portuguese ones. And — last but not least — if your Schengen visa for Portugal from India is denied , AXA’s plans are refundable in most cases . We’ll only ask that you provide the appropriate documentation (i.e., an official explanation as to why your visa was refused by the relevant embassy, consulate, or visa application center). In short, an AXA travel insurance plan will help make your centuries-tested trip between India and Portugal that much more smooth and worry-free.

FAQ about Portugal

And now here’s some more general info to help you prep for your Portuguese voyage.

Is a Portugal visa easy to get?

Portugal has become a top destination for many in recent years. As such, it is issuing loads of visas — but processing times may vary. And whether you’ll get one obviously depends on your particular situation. Generally speaking, Portugal is not the most difficult place to get a Schengen visa for. That said — with a roughly 10% rejection rate — it’s also not the easiest .

Is a work visa open in Portugal?

Yes. Non-EU nationals — including Indians — are allowed to work in Portugal with a valid work visa and residence permit . You should consult with your employer about a work contract from and/or a work permit. And you can also apply for what’s known as a “job-seeker visa” to come to Portugal and find work once you’re there. The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs official website can tell you more about that.

Can Indians get Permanent Residence in Portugal?

Yes, they can — and often do! But,again, the official channels — i.e., AIMA , Portugal’s official immigrant service (formerly known as SEF) — can tell you more about that.

How much is rent in Portugal?

One of the bigger issues facing Portugal’s major cities in recent years is housing. And the influx of foreigners making much more than the local minimum wage is leading to drastic increases in rent prices, as well as a near-20% poverty rate. The rent for an okay one-bedroom apartment in central Lisbon, for example, can be anywhere between €800 to €2000 a month. And most people, therefore, live with roommates. However, you can find apartments — and even houses — in more remote areas of the country for under €500 a month. For an idea of local rent prices, the locals most trusted go-to is idealista.com .

General cost of living in Portugal

Despite the rent, Portugal is still relatively cheaper than many of its European neighbors. And to live somewhat comfortably, a single person needs to spend about €2,000-3000 monthly. Whereas a family of four is looking at anywhere upwards of €5000, depending on their location.

Is it easy to get a job in Portugal?

That also depends. For example, many locals struggle to make ends meet due to the housing crisis and low pay. However, the tourism, service, and tech sectors have been booming in recent years — drawing in a huge influx of immigrants and expats alike. Moreover, many international companies have been moving to Portugal in recent years too. So figure out what you’re looking for, keep your ears to the ground, ask around — and you might be in luck.

How to apply for other Schengen countries from India ?

If you're from India and want to visit Portugal, you'll need a visa. Portugal is part of a group of European countries called the Schengen Area.

This means they've agreed to not have passport checks at their borders. Since India isn't part of this group, Indian citizens need a special visa called a Schengen visa to enter Portugal.

This visa also lets you visit other countries in the Schengen Area, making it easier to travel around Europe.

No, Portugal does not offer visas on arrival for Indian citizens. India is not on the list of countries eligible for visa on arrival for Portugal.

Indian citizens need to apply for a Schengen visa in advance from the Portuguese embassy or consulate in India.

No, Portugal does not currently offer e-visas for Indian citizens (or most nationalities). You will need to apply for a traditional visa through the Portuguese embassy or consulate in India.

The Portugal visa fee for Indian citizens depends on the type of visa you are applying for. Here's a breakdown of the general fees:

The visa fee for Indian citizens depends on the type of visa you are applying for. Here's a common range:

Short-Stay Visa (Schengen Visa): Approximately €80 (around ₹7,169 INR).

Temporary Stay Visa (National Visa): May vary depending on the visa type, but typically falls between €80-€180 (around ₹7,169 - ₹16,301 INR).

Always confirm the exact visa fee with the Portuguese embassy or consulate in India as they can change.

Here's a general guideline for processing times for Portugal visas for Indian citizens:

Short-Stay Visa: 15 working days (excluding the time for postal service if applicable). This is the standard processing time, but it can take up to 30 days during peak seasons.

Temporary Stay Visa : Up to 60 days after the interview (if required). The processing time can vary depending on the visa type and the complexity of the application.

Long-Stay Visa : Processing times can vary significantly, often taking several months depending on the specific visa type and the complexity of the application.

Visa Type: Short-stay visas are typically processed faster than temporary or long-stay visas.

Completeness of Application: Ensure your application includes all required documents to avoid delays.

Workload at Embassy/Consulate: Higher application volume can lead to longer processing times.

Individual Case Complexity: Specific circumstances might require additional scrutiny, extending processing time.

Whether you need to renew your Portugal visa depends on the type of visa you currently hold:

Short-Stay Visa (Schengen Visa): This visa is not renewable. It's valid for a specific period (up to 90 days), and you cannot extend your stay beyond that timeframe. If you wish to stay longer, you would need to apply for a different type of visa, such as a temporary stay visa.

Temporary Stay Visa (National Visa): This visa may or may not be renewable depending on the specific visa type. For instance, a work visa might be renewable if you continue to be employed by the same company. You should check the validity period and renewal options with the visa you received.

Long-Stay Visa (Residence Visa): These visas are typically renewable, allowing you to stay in Portugal for a longer period. The specific renewal process and requirements will vary depending on the type of residence visa you hold.

For Indian passport holders wishing to renew their Portugal visa, the process can vary depending on the type of visa and the specific circumstances. Here's a general overview of the steps you may need to take:

Check Eligibility: This may depend on factors such as the type of visa you currently hold, the duration of your stay, and whether your visa allows for renewal.

Review Visa Expiry Date: Make sure to check the expiration date of your current Portugal visa.

Gather Required Documents: This may include a valid passport, a completed visa renewal application form, recent passport-sized photographs, proof of sufficient funds to support your stay, and any additional documents required based on your visa type.

Submit Application: Visit the nearest Portuguese embassy, consulate, or visa application center in India to submit your visa renewal application.

Pay Fees: Pay the applicable visa renewal fees, which may vary depending on the type of visa and the duration of the renewal.

Biometrics and Interview: Depending on the visa type and renewal requirements, you may be required to provide biometric information and attend an interview as part of the renewal process.

Wait for Decision: After submitting your application, wait for a decision on your visa renewal. Processing times can vary, so be prepared for potential delays.

Collect New Visa: If your visa renewal application is approved, collect your new visa from the embassy, consulate, or visa application center.

Plan Travel Accordingly: Once you have received your renewed visa, plan your travel to Portugal accordingly, taking into account the validity period of the new visa.

In most cases, a Portugal visa extension  is not  available. Portugal operates on a system of issuing specific visas with set validity periods. Here's a breakdown:

Short-Stay Visa: These visas are not extendable. Once the validity period (up to 90 days) ends, you must leave Portugal or apply for a different visa if you wish to stay longer.

Temporary Stay Visa : The renewability of these visas depends on the type. Some, like work visas tied to specific employment, might be renewable if your work continues. However, extensions beyond the initial validity period are generally not available.

Long-Stay Visa : These visas are designed for extended stays and are typically renewable. The renewal process allows you to extend your residency for a further period based on your visa type (e.g., D7 Passive Income Visa renewal requires proof of continued income).

Alternatives to Extensions:

Apply for a New Visa: If your current visa is about to expire and you wish to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a new visa relevant to your situation. This could be a renewal of your current visa type (if applicable) or a new visa category based on your changed circumstances.

Leave and Re-enter: Depending on your situation, you might be able to leave Portugal briefly and then re-enter on a new visa if you qualify. However, visa requirements and re-entry regulations can be complex, so consulting the Portuguese authorities is recommended.

Indian citizens can travel to Portugal for tourism purposes with a Schengen visa. The Schengen visa typically allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in the Schengen Area, which includes Portugal.

If an Indian citizen wishes to extend their stay beyond the duration granted by their Schengen visa, they would typically need to apply for an extension through the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF - Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) or the relevant consulate or embassy. Extensions are usually granted only in exceptional circumstances, such as medical emergencies or force majeure situations.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • An application fee is required.
  • Applicants must adhere to the original visa requirements.
  • Stays in Portugal or the Schengen zone must not exceed 90 days.
  • A compelling and unforeseen reason is necessary for extension requests. Valid reasons include accidents, sudden illness of a close family member, or unexpected delays in scheduled business meetings, occurring after your arrival in Portugal.

All fees can be paid by Cash/Visa/MasterCard/Rupay.

Also, note that the fees are non-refundable and subject to change based on additional factors like foreign exchange fluctuations, courier & SMS facilities, etc.

List of additional charges -

  • Courier facility available at ₹ 450 per application.
  • Courier Assurance facility available at ₹ 550 per application.
  • SMS facility available at ₹ 115 per application.
  • Premium Lounge facility available at ₹ 2600 per application.

Decisions on visa applications usually take 15 working days from the date the application reaches the Portugal Embassy/Consulate in Delhi/Goa. This visa processing period may be extended up to 45 working days when further scrutiny of the application is needed.

Here is how you can monitor your Portugal visa application through VFS:

  • Access the VFS online application tracking page.
  • Input the Application Reference Number present on the invoice/receipt issued by the Visa Application Centre.
  • Fill in your date of birth.
  • Enter captcha and hit ‘Submit’.

Portugal Visa Application for Indians?

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for visiting all Schengen countries including Portugal.

  • Minimum coverage of € 30,000 / $ 50,000 / 50,000 CHF per person.
  • Coverage of all expenses that might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, or emergency hospital treatment.
  • The insurance has to cover the entire stay in the Schengen territory.
  • The document must be original.

Consider policies from well-known insurance companies such as Tata AIG, Digit Insurance, and HDFC Ergo that meet your travel needs and financial plan.

When applying for a Portugal visa, knowing what could potentially lead to denial is crucial for strengthening your application and boosting the likelihood of getting approved. Here are some important considerations:

  • Lack of Proper Documentation: All Portugal visit visa or tourist visa documents you submit must be authentic, complete, and satisfactory. Submitting incorrect or misleading information can cause your application to be rejected immediately and may lead to potential bans on future applications.
  • Lack of Funds: Inadequate proof of financial stability and inability to cover the cost of your stay can lead to rejection. A recommended bank balance is ₹ 3,00,000 per applicant.
  • Weak Ties to Home Country: Portugal authorities may question your intentions to return to India, if you cannot demonstrate strong ties, such as family, property, or employment in India, and, hence, may reject your visa application.
  • Questionable Travel Record: A history of overstaying visas in other countries could be seen as a red flag, suggesting a risk of not adhering to Portugal’s visa regulations.
  • Intentions Under Scrutiny: Not being able to convincingly explain the reason for your visit and its consistency with your planned activities might arouse suspicion. For example, expressing plans to work on a visa that doesn't allow employment could result in denial.

If your Portugal visa application is rejected, you have several options to appeal the decision:

  • Complain to the Author of the Act: You can file a complaint to the author of the decision within 15 days of receiving the notification. This is done at the Consular Post or Consular Section where you submitted your application. This process is in accordance with Article 191 of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
  • Hierarchical Appeal: Within three months of receiving the notification, you can appeal hierarchically to the government member responsible for foreign affairs. This appeal is also made at the Consular Post or Consular Section, in line with Paragraph 2 of Articles 58 and 59 of the Code of Procedure in Administrative Courts.
  • Initiate Administrative Action: You can also initiate an administrative lawsuit within three months of the notification. This action is taken at the Administrative Court of Lisbon Circle, as stipulated by Articles 58 and 69 of the Code of Procedure in Administrative Courts.

The mentioned options are not mutually exclusive, meaning you can pursue an appeal to the Minister and, depending on its outcome, proceed to litigation. Furthermore, you can appeal the decision and simultaneously bring an action to the administrative court without waiting for the appeal's result, as allowed by Paragraph 5 of Article 59 of the CPTA.

The administrative cost for handling each appeal procedure is €75, except for applications resulting from authorizations for family reunification. This fee covers the use of administrative guarantees to contest a visa application's decision.

Teleport's Expert Tip

When you arrive at a Portuguese airport, here are key points visitors should keep in mind:

  • Prepare your travel documents: Ensure you have your passport, valid Portugal visa (if applicable), return flight ticket, and accommodation confirmations at hand. This streamlines the immigration process.
  • Advice for minors : Minors travelling alone should remain with the airline staff assigned to them for security. Upon landing, locate the pre-arranged adult who will meet you, ensuring a seamless arrival.
  • Familiarise yourself with Portugal's Customs regulations: Head to the customs area if you need to declare items or if your baggage requires inspection. Understanding the customs rules at Portuguese airports is crucial to prevent any complications.

What people say about us

Portugal visa policy.

The entry requirement for any foreigner coming to Portugal depends on their nationality, why they are traveling, and how long they intend to stay there. Portugal is a member of the Schengen Area, having signed the Schengen Agreement and subscribed to the one visa policy of the Union. This policy is shared by 27 European countries which grants visa-free access to their citizens. Subsequently, Schengen citizens are free to live in any Schengen country indefinitely without visas, and they can enter member states with only their ID cards if they do not have passports.

The second visitor category is those from somewhere other than visa-exempt nations. Nin visa-exempt visitors will need visas before being allowed into the South West EU country. Visas can either be Schengen visas or national long-stay visas. Schengen visas are short-term visas for 90 days visits. They are primarily issued to persons coming for business or tourism, but transit travelers can equally use them.

Long-term visas are issued for longer stays that exceed 6 months and tend to remain valid for one year and above.

The other visitor category is those from visa-exempt countries who don't need visas to enter Portugal. The Portuguese government maintains a list of visa-exempt countries like other Schengen countries. If you are a citizen of any of these countries, you can stay in Portugal or other Schengen nations for 90 days, but you will need ETIAS approval. This list is determined by several factors and regulations by the European Commission and all the other member nations in the Schengen zone. This is why they all seem to have the same visa free list.

Portugal ETIAS

Visitors from visa-exempt countries must apply for the European Travel Information and Authorization System permit before being granted entry into Portugal. The program is currently in the pilot stage, and visitors from these countries can visit Schengen countries with it or with their valid passports. By the start of 2024, it will be mandatory for all visa-exempt visitors to get their ETIAS; otherwise, they will not be allowed into any Schengen country, including Portugal.

The European Commission launched the ETIAS program, which will be implemented by member states to combat illegal immigration and to track terrorist and health risks. The ETIAS approval is a visa waiver program mandatory for visa-exempt passport holders for eligible visitors coming to Portugal for business, tourism, transit, and medical treatment. This visa waiver permit is valid for 3 years, and a holder can stay in Portugal or any other country in the Union for 90 days within 6 months. Furthermore, it is digitally linked to the visitor's passport, and it takes only a few minutes to complete the application form.

Applicants must go online and complete an online application form; this form contains sections for passport, travel and personal information and there is also a set of security questions which must be answered truthfully.  After completing and submitting the form, the ETIAS system will kick into gear to screen their data across several security databases for potential risks.

Applications that trigger no alerts will be approved while those classified as high risks will be rejected.  The European Commission has also mandated member states including Portugal to have local review units to manually vet suspicious applications  in line with their independent policies. This process may take some time but the affected applicant will be informed of the situation and kept informed.

Note:  If you are not from a visa-exempt country, you can still visit Portugal if you obtain a visa. Visit the nearest Portuguese foreign mission to apply for a visa. Portugal doesn't have an entry ban at the moment.

Key Information About Portugal ETIAS

Interested applicants should bear the following in mind as they prepare to submit their applications.

It is not a visa: The first thing to note is that this document is merely an online authorization which permits the holder to enter Portugal. It is not a visa nor does it grant the holder the privilege to apply for a resident permit or work visa during their stay. This permit is solely for short visits.

Limitations: Despite allowing the holder to enter Portugal without a visa there are limits to what you can do with it. For starters, you cannot work in the country with this visa nor can you study in any of the academic institutions in the country. To work or study you will need a work or study visa issued by a Portuguese embassy or consulate abroad. Secondly, you cannot stay in Portugal or any other Schengen country for more than 90 days within 6 months. Staying much longer will be treated as a violation and you will be fined on your way out.

Primary Destination:  If you apply for Portugal ETIAS that means you intend to visit only Portugal or it will be your first destination before traveling to another country in the Schengen zone. If Portugal will not be your first port of call, please apply to the appropriate countrym

Visa requirements for portugal 2024: guidelines, application process, and more.

Updated: August 27, 2024

Home » Visa Requirements for Portugal 2024: Guidelines, Application Process, and More

Understanding the Portuguese visa requirements can be complex, as they involve several factors, such as your country of origin and the purpose and duration of your visit. For example, if you visit Portugal from a country that isn’t visa-exempt, you’ll need a Portugal Tourist Visa or Schengen Visa to enter and travel within the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within 180 days.

Similarly, you need the correct visa if you want to retire in Portugal, invest in the country, or work as a digital nomad. To help you navigate this process, we’ll explain who needs a visa, the different types of visas available for Portugal, what you can do with them, and what you need to apply.

Visa-Free Entry Into Portugal

Entering Portugal without a visa depends largely on your nationality, the duration of your stay, and the reason for your visit. Portugal, as a member of the European Union (EU) and the Schengen Area, follows the visa policies applicable to these regions.

If you are a citizen of an EU or European Economic Area (EEA) member state or Switzerland, you do not need a visa to enter Portugal, regardless of the purpose or length of your stay. These citizens enjoy the right of free movement, meaning they can live, work, or study in Portugal with minimal formalities.

For citizens of non-EU/EEA countries, Portugal has agreements that allow visa-free entry for short stays (up to 90 days within 180 days) for tourism, business, or family visits. Countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan fall under this visa waiver program. During these short visits, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date from Portugal.

However, if your stay exceeds 90 days, or your purpose of visit includes work, study, or long-term residence, you must apply for the appropriate visa before entering Portugal. This applies even to citizens of countries that otherwise enjoy visa-free access for short visits.

Portugal also requires that travelers, even those who do not need a visa, must not be on the Schengen Information System (SIS) as a person to be refused entry and must not be considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health, or international relations.

Additionally, starting in 2024, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) before entering the Schengen Area, which includes Portugal. This electronic authorization is part of the EU’s new security measures and will be required even for short stays.

It allows you to enter the Schengen Area for a short stay and is often associated with travelers or visiting family. As a general rule, you must apply for a tourist visa from the country where you’ll be spending most of your time or from the country where you are planning to enter the Schengen Zone.

There are two types of visitor visa, with subtle differences between the two:

  • Schengen Visitor Visa is intended for individuals who wish to visit friends or family members residing in the Schengen Area.
  • Schengen Tourist Visa is designed for individuals who want to travel to the Schengen Area for tourism purposes.

Both allow the holder to stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within 180 days. However, the purpose of the visit may be considered during the visa application process.

Portugal Tourist Visa requirements

The required documents are dependent on the applicant’s situation. As a general guideline, the following documents are required to apply for your Portugal tourist visa:

  • A valid passport or travel document with at least two empty pages
  • A completed and signed visa application form
  • Two recent passport-size photographs
  • Proof of accommodation for the duration of the stay, such as a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from the host

  • A flight itinerary or booking confirmation
  • Proof of ties to the home country, such as a letter from an employer or a school, if a student
  • Any additional documents required by the Portuguese Consulate or the nearest Portuguese Embassy from where you are applying

Portugal entry requirements for US citizens: Visiting Portugal for up to 90 days as a US citizen? No visa is required. Ensure your US passport is valid for at least three months beyond your stay or has an approved document from Schengen member states.

Portugal tourist entry requirements for Indian citizens Indian citizens require a short-stay visa to enter Portugal and any country in the Schengen area. For Indian investors looking to invest in the country and acquire a Golden Visa, we have a complete guide on the requirements for this visa, which you can read here .

Portugal entry requirements for UK citizens UK citizens aren’t required to have a visa to enter Portugal if they stay for less than 90 days. As a UK citizen, following 90 days, you’ll need to apply for a Schengen visa. If you also have an EU or EEA passport, you should use this when entering and exiting Portugal and the Schengen Area.

Where to Apply and How Long It Takes

The minimum processing time for a short-stay visa in Portugal is two weeks, but based on your circumstances, the duration may be extended to up to 30 days.

In exceptional cases, the processing period could be prolonged to 60 days, as Portuguese embassies may need to collaborate with other Schengen consulates during the evaluation process. Long-term visas have their own processing times, depending on the type of visa and the country from which you’re applying.

Depending on how the Portuguese authorities in your country of residence have regulated visa submission, you may have to apply for your Portugal Tourist Visa at one of the following:

  • Your nearest Portuguese Embassy
  • A Portuguese Consulate
  • A Visa Application Center
  • The Embassy/Consulate of another Schengen country to which Portugal has outsourced visa submission

Airport transit visa.

An Airport Transit Visa allows travelers from certain non-Schengen countries to pass through the international transit area of a Schengen airport without entering the Schengen Area. It is only valid for one transit through the airport and is optional for passengers with a valid visa for their final destination. Portugal Transit Visa B:

In contrast to visas such as the Golden Visa or the D7 Passive Income Visa, the Portugal D2 Visa sets itself apart by not necessitating a substantial investment or a steady passive income. Instead, the Portuguese entrepreneurship visa emphasizes the importance of business investment and the presence of a viable business concept. The D2 Visa Portugal offers versatility, catering to various business types, spanning from cozy cafes to expansive real estate agencies.

There’s no minimum investment requirement for the D2 Visa, but you must have sufficient financial resources to establish and run your business while sustaining your livelihood in Portugal for a year. The D2 Visa is valid for four months, during which the entrepreneur must enter Portugal and apply for a residency permit.

The residence permit post-D2 Visa is valid for two years and can subsequently be extended for three years. After five years of residency, applying for Portuguese citizenship and/or permanent residence is possible.

D3 - Highly Qualified Activities Individuals Visa

Portugal D3 Visa is for Highly Qualified Activities individuals. It is reserved for applicants with extensive experience or high-level qualifications for specific fields of work. This visa is designed for Portuguese companies to attract skilled employees to the country.

  • The applicant must have completed a Bachelor’s or an equivalent level—level 6, according to ISCED 2011, or level 5 (tertiary level education)—and have  five years of experience in specialized technical functions.
  • The applicant must be proficient in Portuguese, English, French, or Spanish, as  appropriate to the functions/duties performed.

D6 - Family Reunification Visa

The Family Reunification Visa is a residence permit that allows non-EU family members of Portuguese residents to join them and become residents in the country. This includes:

For example, if you have a two-year residency permit, your spouse or partner will be granted a residence permit for the same two-year period.

However, if you have a permanent residence permit, the D6 Visa for your family member will be valid for up to two years. The non-EU family members will also have the same rights as Portuguese nationals regarding employment, education, healthcare, social security, and tax benefits.

To qualify for the D6 Family Reunification Visa, family members applying must produce:

Moreover, your entire family is eligible for residency in Portugal under the EU family reunification scheme.

If you renew your residence permit for five years, you can apply for permanent residency and Portuguese citizenship , which allows you to obtain a Portuguese passport and identity documents, provided you meet the requirements under Portuguese nationality law.

D8 - Digital Nomad Visa

The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa is designed for remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who wish to live in Portugal while working for clients or companies outside the country. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate that they have a location-independent job or business, meaning they can perform their work from anywhere in the world. They must also meet specific income requirements to ensure they can support themselves during their stay. The income threshold typically requires proof of earnings that are at least four times the minimum wage in Portugal, although this amount can vary.

Applicants must provide documentation such as a valid passport, proof of income (like bank statements or contracts), health insurance, and accommodation details for their stay in Portugal. The visa also requires that applicants do not intend to engage in Portuguese employment, as it is aimed at those working remotely for non-Portuguese entities.

Several criteria must be met to be eligible for the D8 Visa, but the most important ones involve proving you work remotely and meeting the minimum income threshold.

Eligibility for the D8 Visa

  • Your age should be over 18 years old.
  • You are to be a non-EU and non-EEA citizen.
  • You must have fully remote work on a permanent contract or freelance.
  • You have to prove the total income from all sources, which would be at least €3,040.

Portugal's Golden Visa

The Portugal Golden Visa is a residency-by-investment program. The Golden Visa (which is essentially a residence permit) allows you to live and work in Portugal if you meet the minimum investment requirement, which starts at €250,000 for a donation to an art project or a project preserving Porutgal’s national cultural heritage (this amount is reduced to €200,000 in Portugal’s “low-density areas”).

This visa offers opportunities to become a Portuguese citizen and gain a Portuguese passport after five years, provided you meet all the requirements under Portuguese nationality law. As a Golden Visa holder, you can bring your family members to live, work, and study in Portugal. If you want to include family members in your application, you must provide documents such as marriage and birth certificates.

A key benefit of this visa is that the stay requirement allows much flexibility; you only need to spend an average of seven days per year in Portugal to maintain your legal residency status there.
