Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, how to go to johor bahru by bus from singapore.

Johor Bahru is the closest Malaysian city to Singapore. In fact, Johor Bahru is only separated by a 2.7km bridge over the Johor Straits from the Woodlands Checkpoint in the north of Singapore.

Johor Bahru as seen from Johor Strait

Due to its proximity, Johor Bahru (also lovingly known as JB in Singapore) became a popular destination for Singapore residents to spend a quick weekend in. It is also a crossing point for those of us who are looking for short getaways from Singapore .

Crossing over to Johor Bahru is easy. I’ll cover what you need to know in this post!

Tips for Crossing over to Johor Bahru

Here are a couple of pointers that will make your journey to JB smoother:

Bring your passport with a minimum of 6 months validity – Yes, even though it’s such a short trip that doesn’t feel like an international journey, you’re still crossing over to a different country – so you need your passport. Additionally, make sure you have at least 6 months’ validity on your passport!

Check if you need a Malaysia visa  – If you hold a China or India passport, you need to get a visa to enter Malaysia. You can check  Malaysia visa requirements here .

Fill in Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) – Unless you’re holding a Singapore passport or Malaysian Long Term Residence, you will need to fill in MDAC starting January 1, 2024. You can fill out MDAC here within 3 days of your planned departure to Malaysia.

Queue at Johor Bahru Checkpoint – While exiting Singapore as a resident should be easy enough, you might encounter a long queue at the Johor Bahru Checkpoint. If that’s the case, check counters 3-4, 7-8, 11-12, or 15-16 for a potentially faster queue. These counters are usually manned by two officers and might move faster. But before joining the line, make sure both officers are present!

Johor Checkpoint

Avoid peak times and holidays – Crossing the border is easy, but when it’s holiday time, it could take up to 4 hours to clear the immigration on both sides. I will elaborate below on the best time to go to Johor Bahru.

Using E-Gate at Johor Baru Checkpoint – If you hold a Singapore passport, good news! You can use the automated E-Gate to enter Malaysia. However, on the first visit, you still need to go to the manual counter to get your passport verified. On the subsequent visits after that, you can use the E-Gate.

Bring cash and your physical credit card – In most shops and restaurant you’ll be able to pay with credit card, but payment using Apple Wallet may not go through. I had this happen in one of the shops I was buying things from, but I was still able to use my credit card and wave it on the machine.

Coming back to Singapore? Fill out the Arrival Card – If you’re coming back to Singapore as a tourist and you do not hold residency here, you’ll need to fill out Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC). You can fill out SGAC here .

Best Time to Go to Johor Bahru from Singapore

With a high volume of economic and tourism activities happening between Singapore and Malaysia, the land crossing between Singapore and Malaysia at Johor Bahru is undoubtedly one of the busiest border crossings in the world.

Many Malaysian residents live in Johor Bahru and work in Singapore. Because of this, on weekdays, most traffic will be coming from Johor Bahru to Singapore in the morning, and vice versa in the afternoon when people are off work. I have seen the terrible traffic from 3 PM from Singapore to JB.

On weekends, it’s the opposite – most traffic will be Singapore residents who want to do a short weekend trip in JB or other parts of Malaysia. The busiest time on the weekend will be going from Singapore to Johor Bahru after 8 AM on Saturday and coming back on Sunday around 4 PM.

So, the best time to cross from Singapore to Johor Bahru is on weekdays , from Monday to Friday in the morning by 10 AM , and coming back to Singapore in the afternoon by 4 PM . Otherwise, you might face long queues at the checkpoints. On Weekends (Sat and Sun) or Public Holidays, I would go from Singapore to JB as early as possible in the morning – as early as 6 – 8 AM. And if you’re coming back to Singapore on Sunday, I’d try to cross the border by 2 PM.

How to get to Johor Bahru from Singapore

Getting to Johor Bahru from Singapore is a well-oiled machine. It’s no wonder many Singaporeans love visiting JB on weekends! Here are a few easy ways to get to JB:

1. Causeway Link Bus (My preferred way)

The fastest way to travel to JB by bus is using the Causeway Link Bus, which gives you direct access from various points in Singapore to the Johor Checkpoint, without stopping anywhere else.

Causeway Link Bus at Queen Street Terminal

If you happen to live near one of the routes, I highly recommend Causeway Link because it is the easiest way. Here are a few locations where you can board the Causeway Link Bus in Singapore:

  • CW1 from Kranji MRT
  • CW2 from Queen Street Terminal near Jalan Besar MRT. CW2 is the only one that operates 24 hours. There is always a bus leaving every few minutes during the day, and every 45 minutes after midnight.
  • CW3 and CW4 from Jurong East Bus Interchange
  • CW5 from Newton Circus Carpark near Newton MRT Exit B
  • CW6 from Boon Lay MRT

Causeway Link Routes and Schedule: View routes and schedule here . You can also click on any of the bus routes to see when the next bus will be arriving!

Causeway Link Bus costs $2.60 – 6.00 one way depending on which route you take. You can use Visa Paywave to pay the bus fare. Please note, unlike the Singapore public bus, you only need to tap your card once when boarding the Causeway Link Bus. You do not need to tap your card again when alighting. This is because they charge a flat rate instead of a distance-based rate.

Once you cross Woodlands Checkpoint, you can take any Causeway Link bus to Johor Bahru Checkpoint for $1.80. If you’re going to Larkin Sentral (to catch another bus to other parts of Malaysia) then you can use your Causewaylink ticket to board CWL.

2. Singapore Public Transportation

Yes, it’s possible to cross the border with public transportation too! The public transportation is slightly cheaper than the Causeway Link Bus, but not by much – it is capped at $2.37 per journey.

There are many ways to get to Woodlands Checkpoint by public transportation, but the easiest way would be the following direct services:

  • Take the MRT to Kranji MRT station , then resume the journey with Bus 170X
  • Take the MRT to Woodlands MRT station , then transfer to Bus 950

There might be queues for these buses as they are quite popular, but they’ll come by frequently.

Once you get through the Woodlands Checkpoint, you can board any public bus to resume your journey to Johor Checkpoint.

3. Private Car Transfer

If you are traveling as a big family or carrying a lot of luggage, you might want to get a private car instead. I did not see anyone carrying luggage when I was traveling by bus.

It is not the cheapest, but it is the most comfortable way – They will pick you up where you live and you don’t need to get out of the car to cross the border. All the immigration checks will be done while you are still sitting in your car!

Book a Private Car: I had a good experience with SG JB Taxi on my trip to Desaru . Alternatively, if you want to try taking the bus to JB but need a car back, you can book a private transfer from JB to Singapore via Klook on your way back!

Desaru Coast Crossing Border

How to get around in Johor Bahru

The easiest way to get around in Johor Bahru is by Grab. From Johor Bahru Checkpoint, you can get picked up from JB Sentral at the CIQ Jalan Jim Quee pick-up point.

CIQ Jalan Jim Quee Pick up Point

In my experience of going to JB on a weekday, I did not have any issue getting a Grab car. I was always able to get a car within 10 minutes of booking and the fares are very cheap relative to Singapore. I paid RM 26 for a 12 km journey.

How to cross the border to Johor Bahru from Singapore (and back!)

On my recent visit to JB, I went on a Thursday morning. I chose to go to Queen Street Terminal and take CW2 since it is the closest to where I live.

Taking the CW2 was easy. You only need to line up near the bus (if there is a line) and board the bus using your preferred method of payment. In my case, I used Visa Paywave via Apple Wallet on my phone. Note that Visa Paywave will be charged in MYR since Causeway Link is a Malaysian bus!

Inside the CW2 Bus

We boarded the CW2 bus at 9:47 AM, and it left shortly after to Woodlands Checkpoint. We arrived at Woodlands Checkpoint by 10:19 AM. Very fast.

Arriving at Woodlands Checkpoint

Clearing the Singapore immigration was easy for us as Singapore residents. We just went through the automated gate on the far right. By 10:26 AM, I was back in the bus area queueing for the Causeway Link Bus to Johor Bahru Checkpoint.

Queue for the Causeway Link Bus to Johor Checkpoint

We arrived at the Johor Bahru Checkpoint at 10:48 AM. There was a long queue, but it moved fast and we cleared immigration using a manual counter by 11:09 AM.

Johor Checkpoint

After that, we simply followed the signs to JB Sentral, where I’ve asked my Grab car to pick us up. And off we went to our adventure in JB!

Crossing over to JB Sentral

On the way back to Singapore later in the afternoon of the same day, we did the same thing but in reverse. The Causeway Link Buses were already waiting for us so there was almost no wait.

Boarding Causeway Link Bus to Woodlands Checkpoint

The whole thing was so easy that I wondered why I did not do this more often.

And that’s my experience crossing the Singapore – Malaysia border and back! I hope this post is useful to you. As always, please feel free to leave comments below.

Until next time!

If you are planning to travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru (JB) but you hate the traffic jam along the causeway, you should consider taking the train to JB! The train journey is only 5 minutes long and the ticket price is really affordable.

In case you need an introduction, KTM stands for Keretapi Tanah Melayu, which can be translated to Malayan Railways. There are many types of KTM Train (such as KTM Intercity, ETS, Komuter, etc), but the train that serves Singapore <-> Johor Bahru route is called KTM Shuttle Tebrau .

In this article, I will share the full detailed guide on how to take train from Singapore to JB, as well as from JB to Singapore.

Train Schedule

Have any questions about traveling in Singapore? Join All About Singapore Travel FB group, I'll be there to answer your questions!

Train Ticket Prices

If you purchase the tickets separately, the train ticket from Singapore to Johor Bahru costs SGD5 and the ticket from Johor Bahru to Singapore costs RM5.

However, if you purchase a return ticket, the price will follow the first leg of the ticket. For example:

  • If you purchase a return ticket of SG-JB and JB-SG, the total cost is 2xSGD5 = SGD10
  • If you purchase a return ticket of JB-SG and SG-JB, the total cost is 2xRM5 = RM10

Booking the train ticket online

The first step you need to do is to purchase the train ticket. You can purchase it from the counter located at Level 1 of Woodlands Train Checkpoint Building or you can book it online. I highly recommend that you book online because the train ticket gets sold out very early, especially the evening tickets and weekend tickets.

Registering for an account

If this is your first time making an online booking for KTM train, you need to register a new account. Go to KTM Shuttle Tebrau website , and click “Login/Signup” link located at the top right corner of the screen. Then, fill up your particulars.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (1) - Register New Account

After that, you will receive an email from KTM with a link to activate your account.

After activation, you can now login to your account on KTM website.

Go to KTM Shuttle Tebrau website and login to your account. Once logged in, you are redirected to ETS/Intercity booking platform, which is NOT what we want. You need to click on “Shuttle Tebrau” link at the top menu.

Now, you can choose your route, date and number of passengers.

By the way, children below 4 years old can travel for free, but you need to register at ticket counter before departure. Upon registration, you will receive a physical ticket for your child. Ticket counter at Singapore is located at Level 1 of the Woodlands Train Checkpoint building. Meanwhile, ticket counter at Johor Bahru is located at JB Sentral building Level 2, which is right in front of the train departure/arrival gate.

Pro-Tips : 1. If you start your journey from Singapore and you want to purchase two-way ticket (Woodlands -> JB and JB -> Woodlands), don’t purchase them together because you will be charged S$5 for each way (total S$10 for 2-way tickets). Instead, purchase both tickets separately and you will only pay S$5 for SG-MY and RM5 for MY-SG route. 2. If you start your journey from Johor Bahru and you want to purchase 2-way ticket (JB -> Woodlands and Woodlands -> JB), do purchase them together because you will be charged RM5 for each way (total RM10 for 2-way tickets). If you purchase separately, you will be charged RM5+S$5.

After selecting your route, you will need to key in your particulars in the next page. Make sure your passport number is correct because you will check-in with your passport and not your ticket.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (7) - Paying for Train Ticket

Lastly, you will be directed to a ticket confirmation page. You will also receive an email of you ticket, but it takes some time for the ticket to arrive at your inbox, please be patient and don’t panic (mine took 5 mins).

PART 1: SINGAPORE TO JOHOR BAHRU

Make your way to woodlands train checkpoint.

On the day of your departure, make your way to Woodlands Train Checkpoint building. Do arrive at the building at least 30 mins before departure because boarding starts 40 mins before departure, and the gate will be closed 20 mins before departure.

Here are the ways to get to Woodlands Train Checkpoint:

By taxi or ride-hailing : Simply tell the driver or key in your ride-hailing app “Woodlands Train Checkpoint”. You will arrive right in front of the Woodlands Train Checkpoint building.

On foot : From Marsiling MRT, walk 1.5km along Woodlands Centre Road. Here’s the route .

  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 856  (Berth 11) and alight 6 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint. In my opinion, this is the best bus to take.
  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 903  (Berth 4) and alight 10 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.
  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 911 or 911T  (Berth 12) and alight 6 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.
  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 912 or 912B  (Berth 12) and alight 11 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint. Not recommended.
  • From opposite Kranji MRT Station, take Bus 178 and alight 5 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.
  • From opposite Marsiling MRT Station, take Bus 856 and alight 3 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.

Bus to Woodlands Train Checkpoint (1) - Bus 856 at Berth 11

Go through both immigrations at Woodlands Train Checkpoint

Enter Woodlands Train Checkpoint building and go up to Level 2. You will soon see signs for train boarding. Join the queue for boarding and prepare your passport. Your passport will serve as your boarding pass. Based on my experience, there is no need to print out your ticket because it isn’t checked for boarding.

After entering the departure gate, you will be required to clear Singapore immigration, followed by Malaysia immigration. Both countries’ immigration are located at Singapore side. You must clear both immigration before boarding the train.

Photography and videography are not allowed inside Woodlands Train Checkpoint building, hence I’m unable to show you any photos.

Take the train from Singapore to Johor Bahru

After clearing both immigration, you can now enter the train platform and board the train!

Woodlands Train Checkpoint (6) - Train

Seating : It is free seating, so you can sit at any available empty seat. In each carriage, half of the seats are facing one direction, while the other half are facing the opposite direction.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

If you’re prone to motion sickness, you should choose the seat that’s facing the same direction as the direction the train is moving to. How to check the direction of the train? Well, simply use the compass in Google Maps. If you happen to board a crowded train and there aren’t many available seats left, don’t sweat it. The train journey is just 5-min long, it’s not long enough to induce severe motion sickness.

Luggage storage : Luggage and bags can be stored at the overhead compartment.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

If you’re lucky to score the front-row seat, you’ll get extra legroom which can be useful for tall people, or people with many bags and luggage.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

Toilets : There are toilets in the carriage (1 squat and 1 sit-down), but personally I would not use them because… erm, let’s just say that they’re not as clean as toilets in Singapore or Malaysia shopping malls.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

Sights along the wa y: There are 2 types of sight you can expect from this train ride. When facing Johor Bahru from Singapore, the seats on the left side will have the view of train platforms and the causeway (i.e. the road connecting Singapore and Malaysia). Meanwhile, the seats on the right side will have the view of water pipes and the Straits of Johor.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

Arriving at JB Sentral

Once the train arrives at Johor Bahru, take the escalator or staircase up. Follow the “Exit” direction and you will soon arrive at JB Sentral building. From here, you can simply walk to City Square or take taxi/bus to other parts of Johor Bahru.

JB Sentral (1) - KTM Train Platform

PART 2: TRAIN FROM JOHOR BAHRU TO SINGAPORE

Make your way to jb sentral.

On the day of your departure, make your way to JB Sentral building. Do arrive at the building at least 20 mins before departure because boarding starts 30 mins before departure, and the gate will be closed 10 mins before departure.

JB Sentral (5) - JB Sentral Building

Here are the ways to get to JB Sentral:

By taxi or ride-hailing : Simply tell the driver or key in your ride-hailing app “JB Sentral”. You will arrive at Level 1 of JB Sentral. Go up to Level 2 and walk to the departure gate.

On foot : JB Sentral is within walking distance from City Square shopping mall, JBCC Komtar, R&F Marina Place, Holiday Inn Johor Bahru City Centre, Amari Johor Bahru, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, and JB CIQ.

  • From Larkin Sentral (Bus Terminal): Take Bus 227 or P101.

Go through Malaysia immigration at JB Sentral

When you arrive at JB Sentral building, make your way to Level 2 and walk towards to departure gate located at the north side of the building (i.e. near the exit towards CIQ and City Square).

JB Sentral (7) - Going to JB Sentral Building

There are 2 gates: Gate A and Gate B. There is a monitor that indicates which gate the train is departing from. Usually the train departs from Gate A.

JB Sentral (8) - Inside JB Sentral - Entering Gate

About 30 mins before departure, passengers will be allowed to enter the departure gate. You will need to scan your passport at the gantry.

JB Sentral (10) - Scan Passport to go to Departure Gate

Then, you will arrive at the immigration section of Malaysia’s side. After clearing the immigration, you will need to join a queue for train boarding.

JB Sentral (11) - After Malaysia Immigration

Based on my experience, they only allow people to board exactly at the time the train is supposed to depart. For example, if your ticket is for 5pm departure, they only allow people to board the train at 5pm. Hence, you can expect about 10 to 15 mins delay from the scheduled departure. This only happens in Johor Bahru and not Singapore (in Singapore, you can board the train as soon as you clear the immigration).

It’s quite frustrating if you are carrying heavy/bulky items. Furthermore, the space after immigration is quite small, it gets really packed and stuffy during peak period when the train is at full capacity. I really hope the Malaysian operator can look into this matter and allow passengers to board early.

Unlike SG-JB route where you clear both countries’ immigration before boarding the train, in this JB-SG route you clear only Malaysia’s immigration before you board. Then you will clear SG immigration when arriving at SG.

Take the train from Johor Bahru to Singapore

After the boarding starts, make your way to the train platform by going down the escalator or staircase. It is free seating, so you can take any available empty seats.

JB Sentral (12) - Train Platform

The train’s interior is exactly the same as the train in the SG-JB route, you can scroll up to “Take the train from Singapore to Johor Bahru” section to read my review of the train.

Go through Singapore immigration at Woodlands Train Checkpoint

After arriving at Singapore, you will enter the Singapore immigration area. If you’re a Singapore citizen or resident, you can choose to go through the Automated Clearance or Manual Counter. If you’re a foreigner, you have to go through the Manual Counter.

After clearing the immigration and baggage check, you will find yourself at Level 2 of Woodlands Train Checkpoint Building. To get out, simply walk the staircase or take the elevator down to Level 1.

Getting to other parts of Singapore

To get to other parts of Singapore from Woodlands Train Checkpoint, here are the transportation options:

By taxi : There is a taxi stand right in front of Woodlands Train Checkpoint building.

By ride hailing : Alternatively, you can book ride-hailing. The pick-up point is in front of Woodlands Train Checkpoint building.

  • To go to Kranji MRT: take Bus 170
  • To go to Marsiling MRT: take Bus 950
  • To go to Woodlands Bus Interchange/MRT: take bus 178, 903, 911, 912

Woodlands Train Checkpoint (8) - Bus stop

Taking KTM Train to Johor Bahru from Singapore is much fuss-free compared to taking bus. You don’t have to worry about being stuck traffic jam, or being stuck for hours in an extremely crowded immigration hall. You’ll also be able to store your luggage and bag in the overhead compartment (most cross-border buses don’t have luggage storage area).

But there are cons as well. Firstly, if you plan to travel during peak period (eg: SG->JB Fri evening, SG->JB Sat morning, JB->SG Sun evening, JB>SG Mon morning), it’s extremely difficult to get a ticket because they’re sold out months in advance, so it’s only possible to take train during off-peak period. Secondly, you still need to spend a considerable amount of time clearing immigration, so you still need to spend at least 1 hour to cross the border.

Hi Eva, I just read this comprehensive article (and the one where you explained how to cross borders by bus), found them super helpful in navigating my trip for next week. I rarely leave a comment but I feel compelled to do so after reading this article. I appreciate it a lot! Cheers

Hi Kevin, thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement! Hope you have a great trip!

Monday 28th of August 2023

Hi Eva, I found your blog very useful, thanks for that. I am planning to go to JB from SG on 4th 11am by train (I've bought a ticket online), and wondering how early should I reach Woodlands Checkpoint since I should not be late unlike bus which you can board anytime? Do they have dedicated immigration queue for those taking train? Appreciate if you could shed some light! Thanks :)

Hi Yandi. Do arrive at the building at least 30 mins before departure because boarding starts 40 mins before departure, and the gate will be closed 20 mins before departure.

Can I bring a bicycle into the train ? Tqs

Hi Walter, sorry I have no idea

Thursday 15th of December 2022

Can I take the next train if we miss the one stated on the ticket?

I don't think so? You probably need to go to information counter to purchase the ticket for the next train.

Thursday 24th of November 2022

Nice guide. Possible to buy SG -> JB at discounted rate of RM5+RM5? AKA: Buying return tickets JB -> SG & SG -> JB, but not turning up/ refunding the JB -> SG portion? Might get blacklisted or illegal to buy tickets without intent to travel?

I have never tried that, so I'm not sure what will happen if you do that. If you're forfeiting the JB->SG portion, technically it should be ok, because you can say that you changed your travel plan for certain reasons and can't travel from JB-SG on that day. But, if you're requesting a refund, there's a risk that they will void the entire ticket.

6 Things You Should Know Before Travelling From Singapore to Johor Bahru

audrey

Did you know there are 12 theme parks just in Johor Bahru? Yup, there’s the popular Legoland and Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park, to the new Game On indoor theme park, there are options for the young and young at heart! There even used to be a Sanrio Hello Kitty Town but sadly, that’s closed now.

While going to JB can be a ‘basic’ Singaporean thing to do (along with wearing Uniqlo and always about NS and HDBs), there’s no denying that JB is cheaper for us when we want to buy certain things or just have some awesome Malaysian food. And if there’s anything that helps us save money, we at MoneySmart are totally down for it!

And since Malaysia says that Singaporeans no longer need to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) from 1 Jan 2024, we can just use the e-gates instead of queuing for ages at the manual passport counter. However, there seem to be some kinks in the system where it doesn’t work for some people, so just beware of the risks!

Here are 6 things you should know before travelling to JB:

1. Travelling From Singapore to Jb by Bus, Car, Train and Private Hire

There are 4 main ways to get to JB, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

The most popular options for public buses include regular SBS Transit and SMRT buses, as well as Causeway Link (CW) buses that take you to customs:

From Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange: 950

From Queen Street Bus Terminal: 170, 170X,

From Jurong Town Hall Interchange/ Opposite Kranji MRT station: 160

CW buses: CW1 (from Kranji MRT), CW2 (Queen Street Bus Terminal), CW3, CW4S (Jurong Town Hall Interchange), CW5 (Newton Circus), CW6 (Boon Lay Way bus stop), CW7 (Opp Tuas Link Station)

There are also other buses by private companies such as Transtar and Singapore-Johor Express but these are less frequent so we won’t cover it here.

What you’ll need is to have your EZ-link or credit card for the Singapore buses. If you take a CW bus, you’ll want to have cash ready or a Visa credit card. CW buses don’t accept Mastercard or other card providers yet.

Grab also offers a Grab Bus which costs $3 to $11 per person depending on your pickup location.

Bus is by far the most popular and cheapest way of getting to JB, although you’ll have to contend with the long queues at customs on weekends, school holidays, and on eve/public holidays.

Own vehicle

If you own a car or motorbike, good for you. Just zip straight up to Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoint and go through customs all without leaving your vehicle. Just that you may have to contend with long lines depending on when you go.

The journey for drivers just got smoother with the new QR code system from Immigration & Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) .

  • Simply download the MyICA app
  • Generate a QR code
  • Scan the QR code at immigration

*Even though the QR code means your passport doesn’t get checked, ICA cautions travellers to bring their passports along in case any identity verification is needed at Malaysia’s checkpoints.

You’ll also need to apply for a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) . Car owners also need an adio frequency identification (RFID) tag, while motorists only need the VEP. The RFID tag for motorists will be rolled out later.

Find out more about the VEP with our guide .

From Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral, the KTM Shuttle Tebrau gets you across the border in just 5 minutes.

The best part? You get to avoid queuing at customs and at the bus terminals with the train.

But the catch is that tickets for the train go FAST. You’ll want to book way ahead if you’re planning to visit JB on a weekend or during peak periods.

Ticket prices from Singapore are also more expensive:

  • Woodlands to JB: S$5
  • JB to Woodlands: RM5 (~S$1.42)

If you want to save, it may be more worth it to buy only a one-way train ticket and go in to JB by bus.

Private hire

Get a taxi for you and your travel group or private car or van charters so you can get to JB in comfort, without having to stand on a crowded bus or train.

You can find various companies providing these services on Klook or Shopee. Just make sure to check the reviews before booking!

2. Peak Travel Times

Be strategic about when you go. If you can, avoid peak hours, weekends, eve and public holidays.

According to multiple sources, peak hours from Singapore to JB are:

Weekdays, 8am – 10am, 6pm – 8pm

Saturdays: 8am – 9pm (the time when Singapore day trippers and weekend warriors head in to JB)

Sundays: 2pm – 10pm (the time when Singaporeans are coming back from JB)

Here are some tips to make your journey to JB less arduous:

  • Avoid rush hours where daily commuters between Singapore and JB head home after work
  • Avoid Friday evenings, Saturdays (around 8am – 1pm), Sundays (around 3pm to 8pm) eve of and public holidays, long weekends
  • Check the traffic conditions online
  • Download apps such as Checkpoint.sg or Beat the Jam to check traffic flow

Of course, sometimes it’s really just based on your luck and there’s no predicting how bad traffic can be.

While JB may be a familiar place for many of us, it’s still important to prioritise safety. After all, we’ve heard horror stories of how people have had their belongings stolen right out of their hands ,  had their cars broken into , and even attacked by men with chairs .

Despite all these incidents, many people also go to JB without trouble.

Some safety tips:

  • Don’t have your phone out while walking around, don’t make a call in public
  • Don’t leave your phone or valuables on the table or seats when eating
  • Don’t wear expensive jewellery
  • Don’t park on the street
  • Try not to be out walking on the streets at night
  • Stick to the shopping malls as much as possible
  • Check that your passport has been stamped if going by the manual passport counter

Redditors have even shared tips for drivers such as getting a steering wheel lock so your car doesn’t get towed, parking with the front of the car in, not keeping the wheel straight when parking to prevent getting towed, taking out the cashcard from the reader, etc.

4. Etiquette

A large part of safety also comes with etiquette. As with anywhere you travel to, be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites and basically, behave as you would in your own country. You don’t want to be the loud and rude person laughing and talking loudly.

Basically, don’t be a nuisance to those around you — and this applies to when you’re in Singapore too. I’m looking at the .. erm generation who watches videos at top volume on public transport.

Also, just be nice to service staff. Oh, and avoid discussing sensitive topics like politics and race.

5. Exchange Rates

We’re all used to dividing by 3 when mentally calculating the cost of things in Malaysian ringgit.

With the exchange rate being SGD 1 to $3.4+, the rate is quite negligible whether you’re changing money in Singapore or Malaysia, especially if you don’t plan to change too much.

If you want to change in Singapore, check Cashchanger.co for a comparison of the latest rates, before heading to the money changer of your choice.

Changing Malaysian ringgit in JB may make more sense since there is more stock of ringgit in the destination country. But it’s best to avoid the money changers at JB Sentral. Cashchanger also shows the rates of some money changers in JB that you can use to gauge the cost.

If you’re really particular about which money changer you go to, be sure to read reviews beforehand.

Keep in mind that exchange rates fluctumattate constantly so it’s best to be realistic and not to expect major savings unless you’re changing $10,000 or more.

If you don’t want to deal with too much cash, there are also multi currency cards like YouTrip, Revolut, Wise and more.

6. Plan Which Area You Want to Go to

We’re used to getting around Singapore conveniently within 1 hour or so, but JB is pretty huge and it takes time to travel from place to place, especially if you plan to eat, shop, watch a movie, get a massage/nails/hair done, etc.

Grabs also may take a while to arrive — from as fast as 5 minutes to as long as 25 minutes — especially if you’re in a crowded area with lots of people waiting for their own rides. I mean, have you seen the mess and long traffic lines at JB Sentral and City Square Mall?!

Conversely, you could be in an ulu area where it could take some time for the driver to get to where you are, so buffer in some time if you are going to be travelling around.

For instance, Bukit Indah is on the western side of the Woodlands Causeway and Legoland is even further west, whereas Taman Mount Austin is northwest. So if you want to take the kids to Legoland, you probably won’t be able to realistically have dinner at Austin within a day, unless you’re staying over and are driving on your own.

Perjalanan Keretapi dari Johor Bahru ke Singapura Paling Singkat

The Bridge from Window View In JB to Singapore Train

Jom Jalan-Jalan!

Kaunter Tiket KTM JB Sental

Tempoh perjalanan hanyalah 5 minit!

Gate A ke Singapura

Penunjuk ke Arah Gate A

Seterusnya, saya perlu melepasi kaunter pengesan beg.

Keluar Dari Woodlands CIQ

Selamat berjalan-jalan!
