A lot of Osprey’s gear make it across our desks, and if we had to summarize them, it’d be that they’re very capable daily carries. They have a ton of straps, pockets, and even specialized features like their LidLock bike helmet attachment system. They’re helpful features for sure, but sometimes we want something simple. Minding which pocket is in charge of what gear or which of the many straps to adjust can be a slight pain.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Back 2

Osprey’s Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 gets the memo. Its suitcase-style main compartment is spacious and easy to pack. Granted, there are not a ton of pockets to get things organized, but it has just enough for a simple vacation packing list . Its biggest drawback is its detachable shoulder straps, which are finicky and occasionally uncouple from their attachment points. Still, it maintains a very functional vibe Osprey is known for, so let’s see how well it fares.

Materials & Aesthetic

Like most Osprey gear, the Daylite Carry-On manages to pull off a clean design that’s also functional. There are a lot of seams around the bag, but it’s all well placed. For example, the compression straps flow and join towards the front of the bag. Other bags would be content with just having them directly stitched to the sides, but Osprey’s made an effort to make them part of the aesthetic.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Brand

If you’ve been following our reviews of Osprey’s other bags, you’ll notice that the Daylite Carry-On is overall less strap-y. Compared to the Nova and the METRON , this bag’s easier to tame in terms of straps. As such, the lack of any strap keepers is less of an issue here, both aesthetically and functionally.

The usual Pack Hacker choice of colorway is, of course, black. Black just goes well with anything we can think of (yes, even that banana Halloween costume that’s in the back of your mind). If black is not your thing, there are two other options to choose from. At the time of writing, there’s Wave Blue and Night Arches Green. We think the latter option is pretty eye-catching. Its two-tone design and oil painting-like pattern certainly lend it a classy persona.

The Daylite Carry-On uses two different deniers of DWR-coated (durable water repellent) polyester for its construction. The main sections are made up of 300-denier polyester, while the accents and the bottom are 600-denier. This makes sense, given that the bottom of a bag deals with a lot more abrasion. However, the overall structure feels floppy. Do note that a floppy structure doesn’t necessarily mean sloppy quality.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Zipper

Osprey’s gear typically has an excellent build quality, and the Daylite Carry-On is no exception. There are no loose threads, nor have any of the respectable YKK-branded zippers jammed on us. The hardware (buckles, clips, adjusters, etc.) worked smoothly, but we do have some gripes with them.

External Components

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Side By Side

The bread and butter of any good backpack are its shoulder straps, and that goes double for a travel backpack. The weight of a fully-packed 44-liter bag requires some serious support. The good news is that the Daylite Carry-On’s shoulder straps are spongy and dense enough to cushion the weight. Their top sections are even ventilated with mesh and triangle cutouts for good measure.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Strap

The sternum strap is mounted on rails, allowing it to slide and giving it a very granular degree of adjustment. While this may be our favorite kind of sternum strap, this particular one does have its weakness. More specifically, the strap itself feels a bit slippery and loose, so it easily readjusts even with just a slight tug. Fortunately, this looseness isn’t shared with the shoulder straps’ adjusters.

Silver lining: the sternum strap has a built-in whistle in case you need to call someone’s attention. This is a feature more typically seen with outdoor adventure backpacks for safety reasons. While the Daylite Carry-On may not be the ideal outdoor backpack, its inclusion is appreciated.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Clasp3

The shoulder straps are detachable via swivel snap hook clips. On paper, this is a good idea because you can stow the straps behind the back panel when you don’t need them (there’s a pouch inside to catch them, too). This avoids those awkwardly dangling straps when you’re trying to put the bag in an overhead bin or sliding it across a car’s trunk. However, based on our experience, the clips used for this feature can disengage unintentionally.

In the case of the Daylite Carry-On, this happened on three separate occasions within two weeks of testing: Once while trying to wear it, once while trying to pick it up, and once while packing it up. Needless to say, it’s far from ideal, especially when you consider that those three scenarios encompass what you generally do with a backpack. In a somewhat ironic twist, the clips themselves are tricky to disengage deliberately because the loops they’re mounted to are relatively small, and the fabric can get caught up in the clip.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Studio Back

The back panel features Osprey’s very breathable AirScape design. Underneath the layer of mesh fabric is a fairly rigid panel that has a set of cutouts to further aid airflow. Still, these aids won’t necessarily stop you from sweating, especially during summer, so keep that in mind.

Side note: The back panel also acts as a vertical luggage pass-through apart from being the shoulder straps’ stowage area.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Carry Luggage

The Daylite Carry-On’s fit is relatively comfortable considering that it only has the basics to work with. Unintended disengagements aside, the shoulder straps do a good job supporting the weight on our shoulders, even when fully packed out.

How packed up the Daylite Carry-On also affects how it carries. When empty, the bag’s structure feels notably floppy, which is understandable given the size. Conversely, once we load it up with gear and have both compression straps tightened, the bag gains decent structure, which improves carry comfort.

The most noteworthy omission from the harness system is a hip belt. There’s no built-in hip belt, nor are there attachment points to add one. We think this is a missed opportunity. 35 liters is about the size we feel a hip belt is helpful. 44 liters is well beyond that threshold. The shoulder straps work, but a hip belt would do wonders when carrying the bag for more extended periods.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Carry Handle

As secondary means of carrying, the Daylite Carry-On has a total of three handles. There’s a bottom handle at the front for pulling the bag out of overhead bins, or it can be used as an attachment point for something like a bike light.

The top handle is well-padded with a textured underside for extra grip. It’s soft and comfortable to hold, considering it’s supporting a 44-liter backpack. Meanwhile, we’re less happy with the side handle because of its positioning. It’s located further towards the back, and that makes it somewhat unbalanced; in other words, not the ideal backpack to carry briefcase-style.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Strapped Water Bottle

Last but not least are the twin water bottle pockets. These use simple stretchy mesh to grip bottles with no additional hardware like buckles or zippers. Our 32-ounce Nalgene Wide Mouth Tritan fits pretty securely, though we typically thread the compression strap through the handle just to make sure it stays put. The mesh has a harder time gripping slicker and slimmer bottles like our 18-ounce Hydro Flask . They won’t fly out during regular use, but they certainly can if the bag is flipped upside down or jostled around in transit.

Inside The Backpack

The first of the pockets—aside from the water bottle pockets—is the top quick-grab pocket. It has a wide horseshoe-style opening that goes about halfway down the sides of the bag.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Front Compartment2

Inside, you get two pen pockets flanked by two passport-sized pockets and a key strap. All of them use stretchy mesh material. The free-floating space is enough for a large power bank, but anything bulkier is best put away in the next pocket. Spoiler alert: this pocket carries the majority of the bag’s organization. The rest of the compartments are empty spaces with minimal means of organization.

Below the top pocket you’ll find another pocket for bulkier, quick-stash items. If you can’t see it, that’s because the pocket’s opening is well-hidden by a fabric gusset. Despite the gusset, accessibility is relatively quick. It’s a good spot for stashing toiletries that you may need to take out quickly while going through airport security.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Pouch

We were able to fit our Aer Slim Pouch inside, so space really isn’t much of a problem with this pocket. As we said earlier, organization doesn’t get very granular with this bag, so we do recommend using pouches like tech kits and toiletry bags.

The Daylite Carry-On’s main draw is arguably the suitcase-style opening. For those of you wondering, it’s a similar design to that of a clamshell opening; only the hinge is at the side, butterfly style. Either way, it does make for a more straightforward packing process since you can really open it up to reveal the buck-like space.

Mind you, it won’t be as easy to open for mischievous people who want to get in the bag. The zippers here are lockable, so you have the option to put on your own TSA-approved lock.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Empty

It gets better. While a lot of travel backpacks feature a bucket-style main compartment, they sometimes don’t have built-in tie-down straps. Now, this isn’t an issue if you use packing cubes to organize your clothing like us. However, tie-down straps are a must-have for those who put their clothes directly to prevent them from sloshing around in transit. Oh, and if you use the tie-down straps with packing cubes (and you really cinch the compression straps), it makes for a very stable load.

On the opposite side of the main compartment (the lid side) is a large mesh pocket. This is really the only built-in means of organization. You can see some stitching inside, but those are just for the mesh dividers in the top pocket from before. That’s okay because it leaves us with plenty of space to use as a dump pocket for our socks, gloves, and foldable hat. This mesh pocket is basically where smaller clothing and accessories go.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Carry Stuffed

Last but not least is the 16-inch laptop compartment. There’s not much to say about this one, but that’s okay—it gets the job done. The most noteworthy aspect of this compartment is the amount of false bottom it has.

There are about two inches worth of space and padding starting from the compartment’s floor down towards the edge of the bag’s bottom. We’re usually satisfied with just one inch, but two is a lot better for peace of mind. We’ve seen backpacks with no cushioning whatsoever, requiring us to use a dedicated laptop sleeve for protection, so we’re not taking it for granted here.

Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 Laptop

The Daylite Carry-On’s strengths lie in its simple and lightweight design. The minimal amount of organization could be seen as a weakness, but it works well for those wanting big open spaces for packing cubes and pouches. There aren’t 100 internal pockets we need to think about how to fill—it just has enough to get us through.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Shoulder straps can be tucked away for easier storage
  • Compression straps also lack strap keepers like with the Radial
  • Side handle feels a little too thin for the bag’s large size
  • Took this on a trip from DTW to TPA and back again—overall it performed well
  • The shoulder strap disengaged from the pack a couple of times, which isn’t great
  • Light weight of the bag is great, but it is floppy if not filled up
  • Really enjoyed the suitcase-style packing and minimal organization for a simple vacation packing list

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6 Review

Osprey has been around for a long time and is hugely respected by carry enthusiasts and everyday folks alike. Go to just about any airport or hostel, and you’ll find someone with an Osprey pack on their back. As a one-bag traveler, I was keen to try the  Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6 ; it ticks many boxes that I look for in a one-bag pack. These are folks who know how to design great, functional bags using durable and high-quality materials.

Even though the words Travel Pack are in the name, it’s not just for use when in transit; its size and expandability make it useful in several ways.  Factor in the cost of only $100, and we have ourselves a contender. I put the Daylite to use in a couple of road trips, one long-distance flight, and as my daily work carry – how does it stack up against packs double, triple, and quadruple its price? Let’s see.

Who It Suits

The Daylite is best suited for budget-conscious travelers who are comfortable purchasing from a big, well-known brand. If you’re looking for a pack with essential features while in transit that can be used once you’re there, this bag is excellent.

For those who aren’t sticklers for the latest trends or the hottest designs but instead are looking at this purchase with a more pragmatic eye, the Daylite hits these notes.

Who It Doesn’t

The hardcore carry aficionado. If you’re looking for the latest features, design elements, fabrics, and materials, the Daylite probably isn’t for you. The Daylite is a Toyota, it’ll be reliable and get you to where you need to go, but it won’t be turning any heads or have all the bells and whistles of its pricier counterparts.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Design

Looks

Osprey’s designs are consistent. If you’re going for an Osprey pack, you pretty much know you’re getting a toned-down aesthetic that doesn’t call a lot of attention to itself. As mentioned above, the Daylite won’t be turning any heads, and that’s alright. Personally, I appreciate a pack that doesn’t call too much attention, especially when traveling. The bag comes in “Night Arches Green” that almost looks like a blue/green Multicam, “Wave Blue,” and Black. My particular Daylite came in black, even though in person it seems more like a dark gray.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

The front of the pack contains Osprey’s recognizable logo up top and a small “Daylite” label at the bottom. That’s it. The texture of the pack, though, is fetching and I quite like it – it’s not just flat fabric but adds character, almost like a diamond rip-stop. Especially in black, the Daylite’s looks can keep you incognito while traveling and even be workplace appropriate. It’s clearly not a fancy bag, but it will fit in just fine in most places while traveling.

Construction

Build quality is a big deal when creating a travel bag. The last thing you want while rushing to catch a flight or getting onto public transportation is your bag to pop a zipper or have a seam rip open. At $100 and made in mass production, I expected flaws like loose threads, messy exposed seams, or other signs of a lazy or hurried build. Nope. Osprey’s been making bags for a long time; they know how to build a bag that can contend with the rigors of travel. Although my testing time was a bit over a month, I took the Daylite to quite a few places and overstuffed it as much as possible. It still feels and looks like a new pack. Their reputation and my experience with this pack so far tell me it’ll last at least a few years of abuse.

One point of contention, though, may be of concern when using the Daylite over more extended periods or under harsh weather: there is no liner, only a single layer of material. A notable result is that the pack does lack some structure.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Materials and Hardware

Osprey knows their materials and hardware well, and the Daylite has a mix that speaks to the budget-conscious nature of the bag. The front face is a cool-looking 300D recycled poly, while the accents and bottom are a sturdier 600D recycled poly. In addition, the two bottle pockets on either side are stretchy mesh. None of these materials are especially noteworthy, but they get the job done. On the bright side, they’re easy to clean. There’s one layer of material; the exterior’s 300D is what you get inside, and the same with the 600D on the sides and bottom.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Zippers are YKK #8s and #5s; neither are AquaGuard, though. The zippers are all super-smooth and a pleasure to use. The laptop and main compartment zippers are both lockable. I am a big fan of the zipper pulls on the bag’s exterior – sure, I can see them cracking and wasting away after a couple of years. Again, that’s $100 for a pack that’ll last at least a few years. And finally, the buckles are ITW plastic that feels sturdy and up to the task.

The back panel is pretty interesting, though. There’s a reasonably flexible frame sheet that contains breathable mesh and ribbed foam; Osprey calls it “Airscape.” There is a gap between the sheet and the bag itself, creating a vertical luggage pass-through. With lighter loads, this setup caused the bottom of the sheet to subtly dig into my lower back but became more comfortable when loaded down, spreading the load across the entire sheet.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Similarly, the straps too contain bits of ribbed foam and ventilated mesh. Again, they get the job done with little fuss, especially with shorter jaunts. They’re comfortable, but not the most comfortable or robust straps, still… $100.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Features

The primary purpose of a travel bag is to get your stuff from point A to point B. Generally, this stuff is clothing, toiletries, and tech you need either in transit or at your destination. That right there is Osprey’s wheelhouse – that’s their bread and butter. A side benefit of a good travel bag is using it as an EDC bag without looking ridiculous while at the destination. It’s a tightrope balancing act that requires some thoughtful design decisions.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

The first feature I want to mention is in the pack’s name; it’s expandable, helping to serve as both travel pack and EDC/minimalist travel. A U-shaped zipper expands the Daylite from 26L to 32L. It’s an elegant implementation because 26L is ample for minimalist travelers and EDC use, while 32L is definitely a travel size. There is no need to fiddle around with straps and buckles, no need to cinch it down or out; just one smooth pull can expand or contract this bag. I absolutely loved this because the two sizes worked wonderfully for the two use cases: in transit, 32L; once I wanted to walk around town or hike, 26L.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

I tend to use  pouches  and packing cubes, and the Daylite suits this sort of packing style. The main compartment opens up luggage-style, supplying ample room and a cinch strap. Honestly, though, I’d prefer if it had a clamshell opening instead, as this is more conducive for EDC use without detracting from travel functionality. The luggage-style opening causes one of the zippers to only go about a quarter way down, making EDC use slightly cumbersome. If you don’t plan to use this for EDC, it’s a non-issue because luggage-style is excellent.

On the opposite side of the main compartment is a vertical mesh pocket that virtually spans the entire length and width of the space. Behind that is an additional luggage compartment where the extra 6L comes into play. So, when expanded and opened up, you get a generous amount of packing space on either side, and one is zippable. It’s a very familiar way of packing and also quite reminiscent of the Cotopaxi Allpa.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

The Daylite is accepted internationally as a personal item in its compressed form. Expanded, you may need to avoid making eye contact with gate agents and leave a little breathing room to squish it in. A side effect of using single layers of fabric and how the pack is designed is that there is a lot of space here for your items. One can presumably travel on a budget airline with just this one pack as a personal item and not even a carry-on.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

In transit, the Daylite offers neat features like grab handles on the pack’s top, bottom, and side. The top handle especially has great hand-feel; my wife said it felt like a premium hiking bag’s handle. Another convenient feature is the front shove-it pocket; I personally don’t tend to use these for security reasons. Still, while in colder conditions, it’s nice to stuff a scarf, light sweater, or rain shell inside. This particular implementation, though, is lacking. Osprey uses their 300D poly here, where they should have used the bottle pocket mesh. Not being able to stretch this pocket a bit makes it less useful. Also, as mentioned before, the back panel’s construction has created a very secure trolley or luggage pass-through. Lastly, other features that are great in transit are the two mesh bottle pockets.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Internally, the laptop compartment sits two inches above the ground and is accessible from a separate zipper from the main compartment. It’s a nice touch that doesn’t require you to disturb your pack to get to your laptop. Additionally, a front quick-access pocket goes about a quarter way down the front of the bag, enough to store needed tech or accouterments. This pocket also comes with two small mesh pockets and three pen pockets. There are options for organization between this pocket, the laptop compartment, and the vertical zippered pocket inside.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Lastly, the back panel and straps are a key feature, because after all, the point of this pack is to travel, and often that means lots of walking or standing around. Given the budget-friendly nature of this pack, the back panel, with its frame sheet, ventilation, and foam, does an adequate job. If you’re just hauling travel basics, you’ll be fine. Personally, I’d avoid lugging around heavy equipment. As a final point, the straps also do an adequate job with their mix of mesh, foam, and width.

Osprey is showing its experience here, picking which features to execute while making sure not to overburden the pack and raise the cost.

Performance

When reviewing a bag, my goal is to utilize it in as many different scenarios as possible. For this pack, that included taking it to work with me, going on two road trips, and one trans-continental trip. So even though I’ve only had this pack for a little under two months, it’s been places and seen some different uses. Despite my misgiving about the materials, the Daylite held up superbly well. Even if it hadn’t fared well, Osprey’s warranty is outstanding. Their “All Mighty Guarantee” is one of the best, letting you make a claim for any reason, on any product, irrelevant of season or when you bought it. That sort of peace of mind, although intangible, has a significant effect on how I perceive a bag and my purchase.

Space and Access

The Daylite utilizes its space in a major way. Even though it packs from 26L to 32L, it fits gear like a larger bag. The laptop sleeve, for instance, when not in use, barely takes up space. The expansion portion goes a long way to giving you secure storage that won’t bother the rest of the pack. It’s worth noting that there’s no way to access this section from the outside. You’d need to unzip the majority of the bag to then unzip this section to get to any gear that’s packed there. Plan accordingly. The front quick-access pocket could be a little deeper, but its depth and built-in organization are helpful. I wish, though, that there was a dedicated space for glasses. This isn’t a complicated bag; it’s a gear hauler.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

In terms of access, though, Osprey made some choices here that are interesting. They went with a luggage-style opening. It’s efficient for packing and unpacking but not great when using it as an EDC bag, or just wanting to grab something from the main compartment. They also made an additional opening specifically for the laptop, but it isn’t isolated; it shares the space with the main compartment. In use, it works pretty well unless the bag is fully loaded – then getting to the laptop becomes a hassle. I can see what they were doing here: if there’s no laptop, the space can be fully used by your gear, whereas on the other hand, an isolated laptop compartment would waste space. But as someone who generally always has a laptop with him, I wished for an isolated compartment with side access.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Comfort

This bag is a breeze and barely noticeable in EDC mode with light to medium gear – with one caveat. I am 5’7, and the bottom of the back panel would dig into my lower back a little. It was never painful or annoying but noticeable. When fully loaded, the straps, along with the frame sheet-supported back panel, spread the load across my body. It would no longer dig into my lower back. At times I felt that the more I packed, the better it got, within reason. The materials and construction of this pack are lightweight, and at this price point, I’d say it’s one of the most comfortable packs I’ve tested.

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Weatherability

The Daylite’s exterior materials are coated in a DWR coating. At best, I’d trust this bag in a light sprinkle for a short amount of time. None of the zippers are AquaGuard or have any PU coating, so medium to heavy rain will be an issue. Also, since the pack only has a single layer of material, I could see it soaking through fairly easily. As I’ve said a few times in this review, it’s $100. And I’ve traveled a lot, and I can’t remember the last time my transit bag got soaked, so it may be a non-issue.

The Good

  • • Tons of features in a budget-friendly package
  • • Expansion and contraction allow for multiple use cases
  • • Can carry a lot of gear
  • • Incredibly light and comfortable

The Not So Good

  • • Only a single layer of material (no liner)
  • • Access can be hampered, depending on how you use it
  • • Doesn’t seem very water-resistant
  • • Non-stretchy shove-it pocket isn’t handy

Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6

Verdict

Osprey has a fine reputation and loads of experience in the market. The Daylite is an example of a pack that is honed to be what it is – a budget-friendly travel bag. The design decisions were purposeful and aimed at creating a package with the essential features while keeping costs down. Balance is critical here. The Daylite is missing innovative and exciting materials; what Osprey did choose is lightweight and durable. It’s missing features like load lifters, an isolated laptop compartment, or a stretchy shove-it pocket, but the features it does have are the ones you’ll most likely use anyway. The luggage-style opening can make access problematic, but it excels for packing and unpacking. It only has two size options, but both sizes excel at their proposed use case.

The Osprey Daylite Expandable 26+6 is a beautiful dance of choices that have resulted in an imperfect pack. Still, buying one is a no-brainer if you’re looking for a travel bag in the $100 range (especially one that can serve as an EDC pack too) or looking to buy one as a gift. Plus, with Osprey’s exceptional warranty, you have nothing to lose.

In the realm of adventure and travel, where every detail counts and the right gear can make or break your journey, the quest for the perfect daypack is a tale as old as time. Today, I bring you not just a story, but a seasoned review of a companion that has been by my side for over a decade – the Osprey Daylite, a compact yet mighty 13-liter daypack.

As a full-time traveler for the past eight years, with a passion for adventure that predates even this, I’ve had the opportunity to test a myriad of outdoor gear, backpacks in particular.

My expertise in materials and functionality has been honed through these experiences. In this sea of options, the Osprey Daylite has emerged as a beacon of reliability and versatility.

Best Daypacks

Imagine trekking through the lush trails of Canada, navigating the alpine paths of Switzerland, or meandering through the vibrant streets of cities worldwide. In each of these scenarios, my Osprey Daylite has been a constant.

Its 13-liter capacity, while seemingly modest, is deceptively spacious, offering just the right amount of space for essentials without the burden of excess.

This review is more than a mere assessment; it’s a chronicle of a decade-long journey with a daypack that has withstood the test of time and terrain.

Whether it was a summer road trip or a spontaneous city excursion, the Osprey Daylite adapted seamlessly, proving its worth as a versatile travel companion. Let’s dive into why, after all these years, the Osprey Daylite remains an irreplaceable part of my travel arsenal.

MY Osprey Daylite review summary

I purchased my Osprey Daylite 13L daypack before I dove into my international adventures in 2014, initially embracing it as my go-to rucksack for daily use.

This compact yet spacious pack was a game-changer for routine tasks like grocery shopping, comfortably carrying my laptop around the city, or even for stashing sandwiches and a book during those long commutes.

Buy a daypack

As I transitioned into full-time traveling, the versatility of the Osprey Daylite 13L became increasingly evident. It seamlessly took on the role of a lightweight, adaptable carry-on bag for flights, proving its worth beyond just daily chores.

Its resilience shone through as it doubled as my reliable beach bag, safeguarding my essentials from the harshness of sun and sand. When it came to hiking, this 13-liter wonder was nothing short of impressive.

Despite its seemingly modest size, it was spacious enough to hold all my hiking necessities – two beach towels, a water bottle, sunscreen, and snacks fit perfectly in the main compartment, while the front pocket was ideal for storing my mobile phone, power bank, wallet, and a compact camera.

Over time, my Osprey Daylite 13L review would be incomplete without mentioning how it has become an indispensable part of my travel gear. Its durability, functionality, and adaptability have made me so attached to it that I now exclusively opt for Osprey for all my travel bag needs, be it backpacks, daypacks, or camera bags.

The Osprey Daylite 13L, in particular, has earned its place as a trusted companion in my journeys, blending seamlessly into my travel lifestyle.

Why I like Osprey products

Osprey, a brand synonymous with innovation in bag design, has been at the forefront of crafting high-quality, durable products for decades. Their approach goes beyond the transient allure of fast fashion. Each Osprey product, including the Osprey Daylite, as I’ve discovered in my own experiences, is built to withstand the rigors of regular use without succumbing to wear and tear.

This commitment to durability is not just a nod to quality but also a step towards environmental sustainability. Osprey’s dedication to producing minimal waste and incorporating recycled materials wherever possible is a testament to their eco-friendly ethos.

In my review of the Osprey Daylite, this commitment to quality and sustainability is evident. The Daylite, like all Osprey products, is a blend of thoughtful design and responsible manufacturing.

Moreover, Osprey’s pioneering spirit is showcased in their design of the first backpack tailored specifically for a woman’s body back in 1993 – a groundbreaking move in the industry.

This innovation is a clear reflection of Osprey’s understanding of diverse needs and their dedication to inclusivity in outdoor gear. The Osprey Daylite is a prime example of this ethos, offering comfort and functionality tailored to fit seamlessly into any lifestyle.

Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee

Osprey Guarantee

One aspect of Osprey that I particularly appreciate is their All Mighty Guarantee. This guarantee underscores Osprey’s commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction.

Instead of simply replacing products, Osprey offers to repair them, addressing any defects or craftsmanship issues without any cost to the customer. This approach not only extends the life of their products but also aligns with a more environmentally responsible ethos.

In my experience with the Osprey Daylite and other Osprey products, I’ve fortunately never had to invoke the All Mighty Guarantee. However, there’s a significant peace of mind in knowing that should any issue arise, Osprey stands ready to repair the product.

This guarantee is a testament to the brand’s confidence in their craftsmanship and their dedication to customer service, further solidifying my trust in Osprey as a reliable partner in my travel adventures.

Key features of the best Osprey daypack review

In my Osprey Daylite pack review, I take a deep dive into the myriad of standout features that distinguish it from the average, more economically priced rucksacks you might encounter.

This exploration brings to light the distinct qualities of the Daylite pack, underscoring why it’s a top-tier choice for both avid travelers and adventure enthusiasts.

Back panel made from ventilated spacermesh

Back panel - Osprey Daylite

The importance of a breathable back panel in a lightweight daypack is something I’ve come to appreciate deeply, especially with my Osprey Daylite. This pack features a ventilated back panel made from spacer-mesh, a design element that has been a lifesaver on my hikes in hot and humid conditions.

I remember a particular trek where the temperature soared unexpectedly, and thanks to this feature, my back remained surprisingly cool and sweat-free. It’s not just about comfort; avoiding a sweaty back also means steering clear of chafing, which I’ve learned can be quite troublesome over time.

Another aspect of the Daylite that has enhanced my hiking and jogging experiences is its removable hip belt made from durable webbing. This belt has been instrumental in keeping the pack snug and secure against my back, no matter the terrain or pace.

It’s these thoughtful, comfort-prioritizing features that have solidified the Osprey Daylite as my go-to daypack for all my outdoor adventures.

Internal sleeve and two mesh side pockets

Mesh Pockets - Osprey Daylite

For any seasoned traveler, the secret to staying organized on the move is having plenty of pockets, and this is where the Osprey Daylite truly shines. The pack features an internal sleeve at the back, which I’ve found to be ideal for securely stashing a laptop or tablet.

This feature came in particularly handy during my travels when I didn’t have a separate tablet cover and needed that extra bit of protection for the screen.

Additionally, the Daylite’s two mesh side pockets are a godsend for keeping essentials like snacks, fruit, or a water bottle within easy reach. These thoughtfully designed pockets have made managing my essentials on the go both effortless and efficient.

Hydration sleeve

Hydratation - Daylite Osprey

I really appreciate the option to use a hydraulic reservoir with the Osprey Daylite pack. It’s a game-changer for carrying water, especially on longer treks or hot days. While the reservoir is a separate purchase, it’s a worthwhile addition I’ll delve into later. Using a reservoir not only makes hydration more convenient but also helps reduce plastic bottle waste, aligning perfectly with eco-friendly travel practices.

A key point to note: the latest version of the Osprey Daylite features an external hydration sleeve. This design is a significant upgrade, as the sleeve is positioned on the outside of the pack, resting against your back. This not only enhances comfort but also minimizes the risk of any leakage damaging your belongings inside the pack.

If you’re purchasing the Daylite from a source other than Osprey’s official site, make sure to check for the H20 sign above the back panel to ensure you’re getting this latest model with the external hydration sleeve.

Front zip with key clip

Front zipper + key clip - Osprey Daylite

The Osprey Daylite pack also features a front zip, complete with internal slip pockets and an optional key clip, which I’ve found incredibly useful for organizing smaller items. This design ensures that essentials like keys, cards, or earbuds are always within easy reach and not lost in the depths of the bag.

The front zip is particularly crucial for security, a fact I’ve come to appreciate during my travels, especially when navigating crowded public transport. It provides that extra layer of safety against pickpockets.

Additionally, for those moments when I need added security, like staying in a hostel dorm, the ability to slip an ordinary padlock through the zip loops on the Daylite has been a lifesaver. This simple yet effective feature offers peace of mind, knowing that my belongings are secure, whether I’m on the move or resting.

Option to attach to other Osprey packs

Attach Osprey Daylite

The Osprey Ariel series, particularly the 65 & 55 models, has been such a boon in my travels that I felt compelled to share my experiences through an honest review. One feature of the Osprey Daylite that stands out and complements the Ariel series is its ability to attach to these larger Osprey packs.

This compatibility enhances the versatility and functionality of both the Daylite and Ariel, making them an excellent combination for varied travel needs.

Advantages of choosing an Osprey Daylite pack review

Lightweight.

In my experience, the Osprey Daylite pack is remarkably lightweight, a feature that has been a huge advantage during my travels. Weighing in at just 0.5kg when empty, it’s almost like carrying nothing at all!

This lightness has been particularly beneficial when I need to pack the daypack into my suitcase for flights or train journeys, adding virtually no extra weight and making it a convenient choice for any mode of travel.

Small and foldable

The Osprey Daylite pack, with its ideal dimensions of 46cm in height, 24cm in width, and 22cm in depth when filled, has been a perfect fit for my bike touring adventures, not just for day hikes but also in terms of its compatibility with my bike bags.

The size of the Daylite is just right, allowing me to easily pack it into my bike bags when I’m on the move. This compatibility is a significant advantage, as it means I can seamlessly transition from cycling to hiking, carrying all my essentials without the need for additional bags.

The pack’s ability to fold down when not in use further enhances its practicality, ensuring it fits neatly into my bike touring setup without taking up too much space, ready to be unfurled and used for my next outdoor adventure.

Very durable

In my travels, which are always in pursuit of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that ignite the soul and immerse me deep into nature, the durability of my gear is paramount.

My Osprey Daylite pack has been a trusty companion on various adventures, from camping in the rugged terrains of Iceland to hiking through the diverse landscapes of Australia , and even while surfing in the picturesque settings of Bali. Through all these adventures, the Daylite has been remarkably resilient.

The pack is crafted from 210 denier nylon and reinforced with an even stronger 420 denier packcloth base, a combination that’s proven its durability over time. After five years of intensive use in numerous countries, it’s impressive how the Daylite has sustained only minimal damage.

Now, for a little confession about how my Daylite pack got its battle scars. It has acquired some small holes on its underside, a testament to an incident where it was accidentally dragged across rocks.

While initially disheartened to see any damage, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to observe that these holes haven’t expanded, even when I’ve packed the bag to its limits. This resilience speaks volumes about the material’s quality – it doesn’t easily tear, even when faced with rough treatment.

Attaches to our Osprey Ariel backpack

I absolutely love how my Osprey Daylite pack attaches securely and snugly to the Osprey Ariel backpack. As a full-time traveler, this feature has been a lifesaver, making it so much easier to manage my gear on the go. The convenience of having the Daylite pack integrate seamlessly with the larger Ariel backpack cannot be overstated – it’s these small but crucial details that significantly enhance the travel experience.

Disadvantages of choosing an Osprey Daylite pack

While I have a deep appreciation for my Osprey Daylite pack, in the spirit of fairness and comprehensive review, it’s important to also discuss some potential drawbacks. This balanced perspective ensures a well-rounded understanding of the product for anyone considering it for their travels.

Mesh back panel is thin

Although the back panel of the Osprey Daylite pack is designed to be breathable, keeping you cool and comfortable, one point to note is its relative thinness. This means that items with hard edges inside the pack, like a laptop, can potentially press uncomfortably against your back.

However, with a bit of mindful packing, ensuring that such items are positioned flush against the back panel, this issue can be effectively mitigated. Additionally, a full hydraulic reservoir in the pack can serve as a cushion, adding an extra layer of comfort and preventing any discomfort from items inside the pack.

Shoulder straps are simple

It’s important to be mindful of how much you pack in the Osprey Daylite, as overloading it can lead to discomfort, particularly from the shoulder straps. The Daylite is designed for lighter loads, and its shoulder straps are relatively narrow to reflect this. It’s perfect for essentials like a water bottle and a rain jacket, whether you’re heading out on a day hike or exploring a city.

However, it’s not the best choice for heavier items, like carrying a stack of 10 hardback books to the library. Keeping the load light and manageable ensures you get the most comfort and functionality out of this daypack.

No rain cover

The Osprey Daylite daypack doesn’t include a rain cover as part of its standard features. However, this hasn’t been a significant issue for me, as rain covers are readily available and can be easily purchased separately.

This flexibility allows you to choose a cover that best suits your needs and preferences. (I’ll touch more on this in the add-ons section below.)

Inner pocket is a small

Delving into the specifics, the inner pocket of the Osprey Daylite pack is perfectly sized to accommodate a MacBook Air 13”, which is the device I typically use. However, it’s worth noting that if you have a larger device, like a MacBook Air 15”, it unfortunately won’t fit into this pocket. This detail is important for those who plan to carry larger laptops or tablets in their Daylite pack.

Make your Osprey daylite pack your own

Osprey Daylite

The Osprey Daylite pack offers several customization options, allowing you to tailor it to your specific needs and preferences. These options add a personal touch to the pack, enhancing its functionality and style to suit your individual requirements.

Choose from 3 sizes

My Osprey Daylite pack is the smallest 13-liter version but there are two more sizes to choose from.

1. The Daylite Plus pack

The Osprey Daylite pack, with its 20-liter capacity, includes an additional storage compartment at the front. This extra space is particularly useful for organizing and easily accessing items you might need on the go, enhancing the pack’s overall functionality.

2. The Daylite Travel pack

This version of the Osprey Daylite pack boasts a 24-liter capacity, offering ample space for your essentials. It also features an extra storage compartment, enhancing its organizational capabilities.

Additionally, it’s equipped with an RFID liner, providing added security for your electronic devices and sensitive information, a thoughtful feature for the modern traveler.

You have the flexibility to choose the size that best fits your needs from the Osprey Daylite range. Whether it’s the standard, the 20-liter, or the 24-liter version with additional features, each one is designed to be compatible with EU carry-on size regulations.

This compatibility ensures that no matter which size you opt for, your Daylite pack will be a convenient and compliant travel companion for your journeys within Europe and beyond.

Choose from 8+ colors

The Osprey Daylite and Daylite Plus packs offer a diverse range of color options, with more than 8 different hues to choose from. This variety allows you to select a pack that not only meets your functional needs but also aligns with your personal style.

I personally have a preference for colors that stand out, like vibrant green or bold red, adding a splash of personality and visibility to my travel gear.

Buy a rain cover for your pack

As noted earlier, the Osprey Daylite pack doesn’t come equipped with a rain cover. However, the good news is that most rain covers from various brands are compatible with it. For enhanced safety and visibility, I recommend opting for a high-visibility rain cover.

This is particularly useful in low light conditions, such as during a rainy night in the city or on a foggy hiking trail, ensuring that you remain visible and safe. This small addition can make a significant difference in a variety of outdoor conditions.

This Osprey hi-visibility rain cover works perfectly with our daypack. Choose the XS size.

Buy a hydraulic reservoir for your pack

Another accessory I highly recommend for the Osprey Daylite pack is a hydraulic reservoir. Osprey offers these reservoirs, also known as bladders, with capacities ranging from 500ml to 3 liters.

Incorporating a hydraulic reservoir into your daypack is an incredibly convenient way to carry water, ensuring you stay hydrated throughout your adventures.

Personally, I never embark on a hike or any outdoor activity without first filling up my reservoir. It’s a simple yet effective solution for hydration needs on the go, especially during extended outdoor activities.

Osprey Daylite - hydraulic reservoir

Tip: I recommend this 2.5 liter Osprey Reservoir. Osprey also sells all of the additional accessoires you may need, such as replacement tubes and valves. You don’t want to take any risk when it comes to stay hydrated.

Where to buy your Osprey Daylite daypack

Buy a backpack

The Osprey Daylite daypack is available for purchase at various locations, both online and in physical stores. When considering where to buy, it’s worth noting that the prices typically range from €50 to €75.

However, if you’re opting to buy online, remember to take into account any additional delivery costs that might apply. This extra charge can vary depending on the retailer and your location, so it’s a good idea to factor this into your overall budget when planning your purchase.

Osprey store

I’ve had my Osprey Daylite daypack for an impressive 10 years now. Purchasing it a decade ago, it’s remarkable how it has stood the test of time, accompanying me on countless adventures. This longevity speaks volumes about the quality and durability of Osprey products.

Having a reliable daypack like this for such an extended period has been a significant part of my travel experiences, demonstrating the lasting value of investing in a high-quality product.

Third-party Osprey dealer

In addition to their own stores, Osprey products, including the Daylite daypack, are available through various third-party retailers. Well-known outdoor gear specialists like REI are among the places where you can find Osprey’s range.

These third-party stores are known for their excellent customer service, providing an additional layer of support and advice when purchasing Osprey products.

However, it’s a good practice to check the availability of the specific item you’re looking for – in this case, the Osprey Daylite daypack – before you visit the store. Since inventory can vary, a quick call or online check to confirm that they have the Daylite in stock can save you time and ensure that your trip to the store is successful.

Online platforms such as Amazon are reliable sources for Osprey products, consistently stocking items like the Daylite daypack. One of the advantages of purchasing from an online seller like Amazon is the potential for cost savings. You might find deals that save you up to €10 on your Daylite pack compared to other retail options.

However, it’s important to note that while you might get a better price, you may not receive the same level of customer service that you would from a physical store or a specialized outdoor gear retailer. This aspect is something to consider, especially if personalized service and expert advice are important to you.

Additionally, when purchasing an Osprey pack from Amazon or any other online retailer, it’s crucial to ensure that it comes with the Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. This guarantee is a significant benefit, offering repair services in case of any defects or issues in craftsmanship. Verifying the inclusion of this guarantee with your purchase provides peace of mind and ensures that you can enjoy the full support and quality assurance that Osprey offers. Check out Amazon for the Osprey Daylite.

My final thoughts

The Osprey Daylite daypack has been an essential part of my travel kit, perfectly catering to my needs. Whether it’s for day-to-day travel, short hikes, or as a convenient airplane carry-on, this pack has been a steadfast companion.

Its comfort and sturdiness stand out, especially when the pack is full, making it a pleasure to wear on any journey. The addition of a hydraulics reservoir has been a game-changer, keeping me hydrated during my travels and supporting eco-friendly practices.

Daylite Osprey Review (1)

I’ve grown quite attached to my Daylite pack, much like many travelers do with their gear. It’s accompanied me on numerous trips, but one of my most memorable experiences was hiking in Canada.

The Daylite was perfect for those long, scenic hikes through the Canadian wilderness, where its lightweight design and ample storage were invaluable. It held everything I needed, from water to snacks and extra layers, without ever feeling cumbersome.

I hope this review of the Osprey Daylite daypack has been informative and helpful. If you’re considering getting one for your adventures, I’d love to hear how it works out for you, especially if you take it on any memorable hikes like I did in Canada. Let me know how the Daylite fits into your travel stories!

Carries a Daylite in Daytime

For years we’ve been travelling with and recommending a few key Osprey pieces. And we think it’s important to travel with a detached daypack; they serve to keep key valuables close at hand while in transit as well as to accompany us on long city or countryside daytime outings.

The Daylite series from Osprey has three very similar daypacks. From smallest to largest, they are: the Osprey Daylite, Osprey Daylite Plus, and Osprey Daylite Travel Pack. The Plus and Travel also tack on a few extra features that can make them more worthwhile for some, especially if you’re planning to carry tech gear like a laptop.

daylite travel pack osprey

Note that we also recommend Osprey’s wheeled bags/backpack combos that come with their own excellent, quite similar detachable daypacks . If you think that may interest you, take a gander at our small (carry-on) rolling backpack recommendation and favorite large (checked bag) wheeled backpack .

But if you’ve already got a favorite Osprey wheeled piece or backpack, the Daylites are excellent add-ons as they attach to a broad variety of Osprey luggage (see the chart below). They can for example clip onto a range of Osprey’s hiking and trekking backpacks (reviewed here) .

We’ve found Osprey’s own descriptions of the Daylite, Daylite Plus, and Daylite Travel to be a bit vague and jargony , so we’re happy to better explain their features. Here we offer our own quick side-by-side comparison and then dive further into our thoughts below.

Cons of the Osprey Daylite daypacks

Originally published February 28, 2019. Completely redone on September 10, 2020 to update info, add photos, and add the Daylite Travel.

Quick Comparison Table: Osprey Daylite and Daylite Plus Daypacks

Why these daypacks are great — despite a few downsides.

Osprey packs are generally at the top of our lists for great lightweight luggage — and we use them ourselves as we wander the world while writing for this site. Packs like the Daylite series straddle the line well between classy urban and rugged adventure in both style and features.

In terms of cost, the Daylite, Daylite Plus, and Daylite Travel are in the middle. They’re not the most expensive (showy, fashiony) bags out there, nor are they the cheapest.

They have quite a lot in common; here are the pros and cons of the Daylite daypacks.

daylite travel pack osprey

Pros of the Osprey Daylite daypacks

  • Lightweight at just under (Daylite) and just over (Daylite Plus and Daylite Travel) a pound; you’re not carrying around a lot of extra weight for the packs themselves.
  • Thoughtful pockets with good day-to-day features, without extra unnecessary pockets
  • Quality, durable materials and construction ; the 210D nylon and 400HD nylon have held up well over years in reports from customers and long-term reviewers, as have the zippers, stitching and buckles. At last update I’ve had my Daylite Travel for 9 months with no visible wear; my other Osprey packs have survived many years of constant road abuse with no issues.
  • Backed by Osprey’s excellent lifetime warranty and reputation for follow-up with customers who do have eventual complaints
  • All three are quite comfortable to carry . The shoulder straps are padded and ventilated, as is the back panel, walking the line between offering generous padding and letting as much air-flow as possible.

daylite travel pack osprey

There are a few downsides to be aware of.

  • The Daylite and Daylite Plus have a very thin hip strap but it’s not padded and not useful if you really needed to support weight on your hips. This is unlikely in any case with small daypacks. Rock climbers or those in other very energetic activities may have a use for this strap to keep the pack in place, but otherwise you’ll likely just not use it — it’s removable, fortunately.
  • The Daylite is not suitable for carrying a laptop as its interior slot is small and not padded; if you’ll be carrying a laptop go instead for the Daylite Plus or Daylite Travel.
  • The quick-access pocket is easy for villains to get into as well . Don’t stash valuables there when in crowded city environments; use the inside sleeve instead or a nifty money belt like this one . The Daylite Travel has a hidden interior pocket that is a lovely solution designed just for such valuables.

Best for Super-Light Daytime Adventures: The Osprey Daylite

Osprey Daylite Daypack

The obvious advantage of the Osprey Daylite Daypack is its slightly smaller size and lighter weight. But we emphasize slightly here, as all three bags are about the same height and the Daylite Plus and Travel are just progressively a bit wider and deeper, and weigh a few ounces more.

The bag, as we noted above, is quite well built and other reviewers found that it held up well too, even after a lot of abuse. Osprey bags are quite practically designed and comfortable to carry and this is no exception.

Having less space to pack can also itself be an advantage, as I’ve discovered in my years roaming the globe with just a carry-on. Give yourself just the 13L space of the Daylite, and you’re less likely to take more than you need for day on the town or out hiking. It’s more than enough space for most practical day trips.

The Daylite also runs a bit cheaper than the Daylite Plus; check above in the table for our best links to the latest pricing.

The slick video review below goes methodically through the Daylite’s features with good close-ups of each.

A Bit Larger, Can Carry a Laptop/Tablet, Still Outdoorsy: The Osprey Daylite Plus

Osprey Daylite Plus

The Osprey Daylite Plus Daypack is like the Daylite but just a bit wider and especially deeper. Because Osprey uses such lightweight 210D nylon this really doesn’t make much difference on the final weight of the bag itself.

The Daylite Plus also has a few extra features that we think are key. While both have inner sleeves, the Daylite Plus’ sleeve is padded and can fit any normal mid-sized (15-inch) laptop. Due to the padding we’re also more apt to trust it with other electronics like tablets.

Another feature, unique to the Daylite Plus, is the “shove it pocket” on the back, a surprisingly useful place to stash a neck gaiter , small umbrella, or bread roll. There is also a zippered pocket built into this pocket.

While we’re obviously minimalists around here and stress travelling as light as possible, we don’t think it’s a crime to move up to the space allowed with the 20L daypack for your daylong travel adventures. Sometimes you pick more things up during the day, and that extra space can come in handy.

We’d opt for the extra space of the 20L Daylite Plus in particular if you’re in environments with changing temperatures and might want to have an extra sweatshirt or light jacket on hand.

The following is the best video review we’ve seen; it opens up the Daylite Plus and shows its guts and features close up.

The Best for Travel with a Laptop: The Osprey Daylite Travel Pack

daylite travel pack osprey

The Osprey Daylite Travel Pack is like the Daylite Plus but with features a bit more geared for the traveller rather than a hiker.

The Daylite Travel Pack has a fully featured interior padded hanging laptop sleeve with two organizational mesh pockets for tablets or Kindles. Just above the laptop area, there’s a tucked away, quite subtle but still accessible “hidden pocket” for a passport and cash and the like.

daylite travel pack osprey

The thing that makes the Daylite Travel stand out from the other two Daylite daypacks is the zip-around accordion that allows the pack to expand when necessary. This is a lifesaver in a pinch; I usually leave it zipped to keep the pack thin but it’s nice to expand when I need to.

daylite travel pack osprey

The Daylite Travel Pack is my favorite and it’s the most fully featured of the three; it also tends to run just a bit more expensive. But for just slightly extra weight and cost, you get a more fully featured, travel-ready pack that you can use on the road; the Daylite and the Daylite Plus are more specifically suited for hiking.

Roundup: Which Osprey Daylite Backpack Is Best for You ?

They’re all great; we’d get the Daylite for easy outdoor hikes, the Daylite Plus for all-weather outdoor hikes or when a bit more gear is needed, and the Daylite Travel if carrying electronics such as a laptop, and for any general travel use.
