Boeing’s Starliner Schedules New Launch This Week After Last Minute Cancellation—How To Watch And Why It Matters

B oeing’s Starliner is set to launch a pair of NASA astronauts to the International Space Station this week after the rocket’s maiden crewed voyage was scrubbed minutes before takeoffSaturday, a hotly anticipated milestone for the aeronautics giant producing a dependable space taxi and competing with Elon Musk’s SpaceX .

Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft is scheduled to launch at 10:52 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 5, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, Boeing and NASA said in a statement .

Starliner had been slated to launch atop one of United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rockets on Saturday but the mission was aborted with less than four minutes to go until takeoff after a ground launch sequencer—a computer controlling the launch countdown—triggered an automatic command to halt.

While there was another opportunity to launch on Sunday, Boeing delayed to give engineers more time to solve the problem as it was still unclear as to why the computer scrubbed the launch.

Boeing said the ULA team has since identified and replaced a faulty ground power unit believed to be the cause of Saturday’s problem and NASA said ULA confirmed “all hardware is performing normally.”

Boeing will live stream the launch on its website and NASA will also show the launch live on its website, NASA TV and social media channels, though it’s not clear yet when coverage of the mission will begin.

For those in, or wishing to travel to, Florida, it’s possible to watch the launch in person and Boeing has published a map of areas where spectators should be able to get a good view, including Cocoa Beach Pier, Kings Park, Kelly Park, Port Canaveral and parks near the Max Brewer Bridge.

What To Watch For

NASA says the U.S. Space Force’s 45th Weather Squadron forecast there is a 90% chance of favorable weather conditions for the launch on Wednesday. Cumulus clouds, which NASA advises rockets not to launch through or near, are the primary weather concern, the agency said. Should Wednesday’s launch fail, NASA said there is another opportunity at 10:29 a.m. EDT the day after, Thursday, June 6.

Key Background

Boeing has a lot riding on Starliner. The aeronautics giant received a contract from NASA to develop the means of ferrying astronauts to and from the International Space Station in 2014, around the same time as Musk’s SpaceX, as part of the agency’s plan to boost private sector capacity in space. While Musk’s firm has launched nearly a dozen crews to the orbital lab since its first mission in 2020 (not all of these have been for NASA), Boeing has yet to fly a crewed mission and has suffered years of setbacks , including failed test flights , technical issues and endured more than $1 billion in cost overruns . As NASA expects to retire the ISS in 2030, Bloomberg says Boeing will fly at most six more missions to the station for the space agency. Its first launch is set to carry two NASA astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who will spend roughly a week at the space station to test Boeing’s craft and certify it for regular mission rotations.

A launch on Wednesday, June 5, throws Boeing’s competition with Musk’s SpaceX into sharper focus. Musk’s company is expected to launch its massive Starship rocket for its fourth test flight on Wednesday. If it goes ahead, the launch will take place at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas and could happen as early as 7 a.m. Central Time. SpaceX will live stream the launch on its social media channels and website. Despite ending in crashes and flames, the three Starship missions have been hailed successes and SpaceX is hoping to demonstrate the rocket’s reusability on its fourth outing.

How to Staff Travel?

The best perk from working with an airline are severely discounted rates for flights (if not free!) on your airline. What if your airline doesn’t fly to that amazing island in the Azores? Luckily, you know that one of your ZED partners probably does.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to fly on another airline to your dream destination and how to be a StaffTraveler!

What is staff travel?

Staff travel is when an airline employee flies using their staff benefits. It is also known as non-rev travel. There’s an article here explaining some of the terms that you may come across.

Where should I go?

What an excellent question! This is a difficult one. It really depends on your hobbies, your timeframe, etc. Personally, the one thing I like to draw inspiration from is Instagram . Instagram allows you to explore photos from locations and by some popular tags.

I follow a few travelers who frequently post about trips they’ve taken. Usually, I draw my inspiration from them! Also, I love hearing about places that my friends and co-workers have gone to. Word of mouth is also a very good way to find some inspiration for locations you travel to.

The final place I like to draw inspiration from is my life goals. For me, this was my trip to Thailand. I spent some time in an animal rescue sanctuary near Chiang Mai. Being near rescued dogs, elephants, and buffalo was such an amazing experience. Even better, I was able to camp among them! That memory of being in Chiang Mei will be one I cherish forever. This is why I encourage you to chase your life goals.

When should I go?

Just as before, this is is a difficult question to answer and depends on you! Being a StaffTraveller on standby could be difficult. So given the location and time of year will determine how hard of a trip it’ll be!

The three main things I try to do when I Staff Travel are:

  • Avoid the peak season
  • Avoid flying on the weekends
  • Aim for the first flight of the day

For some, this isn’t as difficult, especially who can take the jump seat. I am not able to fly jump seat but I wish I could!

How do I get there?

This is where the real fun begins.

The first thing I like to do is to determine what airports I’d like to fly into. For example, If I wanted to fly from Amsterdam to Hong Kong, a quick search in the StaffTraveler app tells me that I should fly to HKG and that I might have multiple options.

The next thing you’ll want to do is check with your company website to find a list of airlines you can fly on. These airlines should be part of your ZED Agreement. You will have to find these agreements through your airline.

Chances are, your airline uses myIDTravel as their staff travel booking system. In order to access myIDTravel, you’ll need to go through the employee website of your airline. Below, I’ll walk you through how to check which airlines you can staff travel with on myIDTravel. Your airline might use a different (or their own) system.

staff travel sas

Which airlines can I choose from?

I’ll be honest here, myIDTravel is not the friendliest of systems for research. Once you get the hang of it, you can navigate it with minimum tears. To begin, enter your desired departure, destination and airline, select the date of departure, and let it roll.

A sample of a MyIDTravel listing going from Hong Kong to Bali for a Staff travel

Once you land on the next page, you’ll see some smiley faces to indicate your chances of making it on your desired flight. Let me be the first to tell you, this is not the most effective tool to gauge your chances of spending your weekend in Hong Kong. Rarely accurate, the smiley faces are green (happy), yellow (meh) and red ( no-way-Jose-you’re-not-making-this-flight ). Personally, I’ve rarely found these to be reliable, and don’t trust them when making plans.

Meet StaffTraveler

To make my staff travel experience as painless as possible (who among us hasn’t slept in an airport before?), I use the StaffTraveler app . Thanks to this app, you no longer need to rely on the mercy of 3 old fashioned emojis. Instead, you can have a vast network of airline employees at your disposal cheering you on! StaffTraveler provides you the most accurate flight availability for flights; some call it “the world’s best non-rev app”, yep, shameless plug.

Checking the flight loads on other airlines Let’s go from Hong Kong to Bali (Denpasar)!

Querying Stafftraveler for a flight from Hong Kong to Bali for a Staff Travel Trip

To get started, download the StaffTraveler app in your App Store (iOS & Android).

Inform yourself

There’s too much to know about staff travel to cover everything in a single blog post. Luckily, there’s a wealth of information in the StaffTraveler Insider Knowledge Base . Also, every airline has it’s own quirks. Make sure you inform yourself thoroughly about the particularities of the airline you wish to travel with. You’ll find everything you need to know to non-rev like a pro in the StaffTraveler Airline Notes .

Are you ready to go? Check your flights with StaffTraveler, pack your stuff and have a wonderful time!

James Corden defends fellow passengers after nightmare British Airways flight

James Corden stood up for his fellow passengers on a flight from Portugal to London over the weekend after a “chaotic” travel day with British Airways.

A woman named Vanessa told Metro the former Late Late Show host, 45, was the voice of reason for everyone else on board as he confronted the staff over the unacceptable experience, reports Page Six .

Vanessa told the outlet that the plane circled below altitude for about 45 minutes after takeoff before an automated announcement declared an emergency landing.

James Corden is seen at the Lisbon, Portugal airport in a tense exchange with British Airways staff. Picture: Backgrid

“It was something along the lines of, ‘Gather your possessions as best you can, take off your shoes, and when you’re told to by the airplane staff, please adopt the brace position and when we land if you’re able, please find your nearest emergency exit and vacate the plane’,” Vanessa recalled.

However, soon after, “the staff on the plane assured the passengers that they would no longer have to assume the brace position.”

“Basically, what had happened was the flaps on the airplane wing which are supposed to go down when you are in the air won’t go down, which meant that they wouldn’t be able to raise them on landing,” she explained.

The plane, which took off from Faro, eventually landed in Lisbon.

According to eyewitnesses, Corden was upset because he and his fellow passenger had been told to line up in the wrong line. Picture: Backgrid

Once they touched down, the passengers were all held on the tarmac for three hours before the aircraft was deemed unsafe for flight.

Despite the upsetting travel day, Vanessa said Corden tried to lift everyone’s spirits by laughing and cracking jokes.

“He walked up and down the aisles talking to people, and let everybody take a selfie with him,” she said.

“He was just really nice, he would have been well within his rights to sit and sulk in his seat like the rest of us would be doing but he didn’t,” Vanessa added.

After the passengers were finally let off the aircraft, the British star acted as the group’s spokesperson as he respectfully confronted the airline crew about how the situation was handled.

Fellow passengers say Corden was simply speaking on their behalf. Picture: Backgrid

“We’re in the terminal and there was not a member of [British Airways] staff to be found,” she recalled. “And they put us in immigration queues. And there was just no one there telling us what was going on.”

According to Vanessa, the comedian was the one who told the flight staff that they were in the wrong place — and they immediately directed everyone to the right area.

Photos from the incident show the Cats actor speaking with the airline employees as his fellow passengers flanked him on each side.

However, the group was then told that only club flyers or gold flyers would get free hotel rooms for the night. Corden, who qualified for the comped room, once again rushed to the defence of his fellow passengers.

“James was a club flyer and he stood there, and was like, ‘What about all these people who’ve got all these kids with them?’ like saying that’s not acceptable. It’s not right,” Vanessa recalled.

While it’s unclear if his pleas worked, the passengers arrived at the airport the following day and were greeted by an equally charming version of Corden.

“We were told to turn up at 9:30 for a flight which actually was again delayed by over two hours and James Corden stood in the same queue as everybody else, doing the same things as everybody else did,” she said.

“I saw him let women and children in front of him,” Vanessa continued. “He was a really nice guy both times.”

Corden said goodbye to the Late Late Show in April 2023 after eight years.

While Vanessa had nothing but great things to say about the comedian, he has been blasted several times in the past for allegedly rude behaviour.

In April 2023, one of Corden’s former TV directors called him one of the “most difficult” and “obnoxious” people he has worked with.

Less than six months earlier, Mel B also labeled the former late-night host as the “biggest d***head” in Hollywood when asked to list the worst celebrities she had ever met.

“I think you always have to be nice to the people that you work with, whether it be production, camera guys, sound, lighting,” the former Spice Girl said of the comedian.

“We all work for the same thing, so you should always be nice and he hasn’t been very nice.”
