Shankaracharya Temple – Oldest Shrine In Kashmir

The Lord Shiva-dedicated Shankaracharya Temple, which is located atop the Shankaracharya Hill is one of the oldest temples and best places to visit in Srinagar. The temple, placed on a high octagonal platform resting on solid rock, can be reached by a flight of about 243 steps. The well-known philosopher Shankaracharya, who is said to have visited Srinagar some ten centuries ago, is honored by having his name attached to the temple, which is also known as Jyesteshwara Temple. The Shiva Linga, which he venerated and is believed to have reached spiritual enlightenment, is housed in the temple. The shrine was allegedly built by the philanthropist Mir Husain Qadri in 1845, contrary to popular perception. The unusual elements of this shrine scarcely had any counterparts. It was encircled by internal walls decorated with papier mache finish and covered with a typical Khatamband ceiling with numerous crystal chandeliers. A hideous fire event that happened in the year 2012 seriously devastated Dastgeer Sahib. The shrine has been restored to its former glory and now houses beautiful artifacts that belonged to Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jelani. The shrine which is an architectural marvel is thought to contain five burials, including one of the famed Sufi saints. Additionally, a mosque and a busy market are both close by and a must-to-do thing in Srinagar.

Pari Mahal – Traditional Islamic Style Palace

Pari Mahal , also known as The Angels’ Abode lies south-west of Dal Lake and is perched atop the Zabarwan mountain range overlooking Srinagar. Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor immensely supported art and architecture during his rule and the building shows this. The six well-kept terraced gardens are the reason why Pari Mahal came to be known as the house of fairies. Due to the intriguing history behind it, this palace which was constructed in the traditional Islamic style became the most important historical structure. 15) Pari Mahal:

Also known by the name ‘Palace of Fairies’, Pari Mahal is perched on the top of the Zabarwan mountain ranges. It was originally built as a Buddhist monastery. Later it was converted into a school for astrology by Dara Shikoh, the oldest son of Shah Jahan. The monument is surrounded by 7-terraced huge gardens that are peppered with exotic flowers and orchards. Constructed in 1898 by Maharaja Pratap Singh, the museum has a rich collection of archaeological artifacts and Kashmiri handicrafts collected from all parts of Jammu and Kashmir. 24) Kheer Bhawani Temple:

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhawani and is a sacred temple for the Kashmiri Pandits.  It is located in Tul Mulla, a village near Srinagar. Rice pudding (kheer) is offered to the deity by the worshippers, hence the name Kheer Bhawani. The temple is surrounded by Chinar trees and built over a water spring. A garden built by an emperor for his queen, Shalimar Bagh has been a top honeymoon destination over the years. An architecture, flaunting the Islamic garden layout, known as Persian gardens, Shalimar Bagh is the largest among all Mughal gardens in Srinagar. It features three terraced areas, which used to be treated for different purposes. The uppermost area was for the women of the royal family and the central one, called ‘Diwan-i-Khas’ was for the emperor. ‘Diwan-i-Aam’ was the outer portion of the garden, which was open to the public.

Hari Parbat, A Signature of Secularism!

A hillock, not so far from the centre of Srinagar city, surrounded by lush greenery, home to three shrines belonging to three different religions, Hari Parbat represents secularism for what our country is famed across the world. The hill has a fort on the top of it, a part of which was first built by Emperor Akbar, who planned to shift his capital to Hari Parbat but failed to do so. Later, Atta Mohammad Khan, the Afghan governor completed the whole fort.

On the southern slope, the fort has two famous Muslim shrines of Akhund Mullah Shah and Khwaja Makhdoom Sahib and on the western slope, there is a Shakti Temple, dedicated to Goddess Jagdamba. Plan Your Trip to Srinagar in Kashmir with this Travel Guide

Srinagar, in the Kashmir Valley in far northern India, is one of the top 10 hill station in India. A place of splendid natural beauty, it's often referred to as the "Land of Lakes and Gardens" or the "Switzerland of India". The gardens have a distinctly Mughal influence, as many of them were cultivated by Mughal emperors. Although civil unrest is an ongoing concern in the area due to conflict with nearby Pakistan, calm has been restored and visitors are returning to the area. Getting There

Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam airport was completed in 2009 and is owned by the Indian Air Force. It can be reached most easily by flight from Delhi . There are also flights from Jammu, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Lucknow.

The Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation operates an inexpensive bus service from the airport to the Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. Otherwise, expect to pay about 1,000 rupees for a prepaid taxi (2018 prices). App-based taxi services such as Uber and Ola don't operate in Kashmir.

If you're traveling on a budget and are feeling adventurous, you may try taking an Indian Railways train to Jammu (these trains start from Delhi or pass through Delhi from other cities in India), and then go by shared jeep/taxi to Srinagar (traveling time around eight hours). Buses also run but they are much slower, taking around 11-12 hours for the journey.

A rail project is currently underway to link the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, but it's well behind schedule and isn't expected to be completed until after 2020. Tunnels are also being built to cut the travel time from Jammu to Srinagar by around five hours.

Visas and Security

Foreigners (including OCI cardholders) are required to register upon arriving and departing from the airport. It's a straightforward process that requires the completion of one form and only takes about five minutes. Do note that US government employees and government contractors who have security clearance are not permitted to visit Srinagar, as Kashmir is off-limits. Traveling to Kashmir could result in loss of security clearance.

The kind of experience you want to have in Srinagar will determine the best time of year to visit. It gets very cold and snows from December to February, and it's possible to go snow skiing in surrounding areas. If you want to enjoy the lakes and gardens, visiting between April to October is recommended. April to June is the high season. The monsoon usually arrives by mid July. September to October is also a good time to visit, and is not so busy. Foliage turns lovely deep, warm colors in late October, as the weather becomes colder. Temperatures get quite hot during the day in summer, but are chilly at night. Make sure you bring a jacket!

Avoid booking houseboats from tour operators in Delhi. There are plenty of scams and you never know what kind of boat you'll end up with! Where Else to Stay

The main commercial and tourist district, where most of the accommodations are situated, is Lal Chowk in the heart of Srinagar. It's located within close walking distance of local markets and the Jhelum River. Walking time to Dal Lake from Lal Chowk is about 30 minutes.

If you prefer to stay closer to Dal Lake, you'll find plenty of budget hotels to choose from along Boulevard Road, which runs along beside the lake. Hotel JH Bazaz and Blooming Dale Hotel Cottages offer good value for money in the Dal Gate area next to Dal Lake. Swiss Hotel Kashmir , located just off the Boulevard, is a popular budget choice -- and here's a pleasant surprise, foreigners pay reduced rates (usually, foreigners are charged more in India)! Hotel Dar-Es-Salam is a popular boutique hotel that overlooks the lake

Otherwise, if money is no object, the best luxury hotels are the Lalit Grand Palace and the Vivanta Dal View .

Hospitality Home is the most popular homestay in Srinagar and it's also inexpensive.

The annual Tulip Festival takes place during the first couple of weeks of April. It's the highlight of the year in Srinagar. In addition to being able to see millions of blooming tulips in the biggest tulip garden in Asia, cultural events are held.

Indian tourists often prefer to conduct their trip on an auspicious note, with a visit to Vaishno Devi shrine. It's best reached by helicopter from Katra, about an hour and a half from Jammu. Otherwise, these  popular tourist places in Kashmir can be visited on day trips (or longer side trips) from Srinagar.

Travel Tips

If you have a cell phone with a prepaid connection, your SIM card will not work as roaming has been blocked in Kashmir due to security reasons (postpaid connections are fine). Your hotel or houseboat may provide you with a local SIM card to use.

Note that being a predominantly Muslim area, alcohol isn't served in restaurants and most businesses shut for prayer at lunchtime on Friday in Srinagar. Bars can be found in select upmarket hotels though.

If you're flying out of Srinagar airport, do get there with plenty of time to spare (at least three hours before departure), as there are lengthy and multiple security checks. There aren't any restrictions on cabin luggage when flying into the airport. However, when departing, airlines often won't allow cabin luggage except for laptops, cameras and ladies handbags.

If you go to Gulmarg, you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle by booking gondola tickets online or in advance at the Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. You'll face huge lines at the gondola otherwise. In addition, avoid visiting Pahalgam during July as it will be extremely busy with pilgrims going on the Amarnath Yatra .

Do be aware that you should dress conservatively to respect the local Muslim culture.

2. Nigeen Lake

Nigeen Lake is located on the east side of the city, at the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains. Though the thought of as a separate lake, the Nigeen Lake is an offshoot of the Dal Lake.

They are only divided by narrow causeways, which allow only bikers and walkers; it also carries the water supply pipeline to the Srinagar city.

The water of this lake is crystal clear that the reflection of the edging trees and hills of Shankaracharya (Takht-e-Suleiman) on the south and Hari Parbat on the west can be mirrored. The surrounding trees are mainly willow and poplar trees.

About 20 km north of Srinagar lies the deepest lake in the Kashmir Valley, Manasbal Lake. The name of the lake is in relation to the sacred lake of Mansarovar and is enclosed by three villages of Kondabal, Jakorbal, and Gratbal.

Manasbal is considered the ‘Gem of all Kashmir Lakes’ and is developing stable summer stratification. On the lake’s borders, you can find the lotus fringe in abundance.

5. Nishat Bagh

Nishat Bagh  is the garden made by the father of Empress Nur Jahan. Nishat garden gives you a clear view of Dal Lake and the snow-capped range of Pir Panjal on the east side. Originally this garden had 12 terraces; at present, only 9 of them exist.

Each terrace rises higher up towards the mountainside (east) and lowers towards the lake. Furthermore, there are two main pavilions, one at the lower and another at the upper end of the garden. In the middle is a reservoir of about 14 sq ft and 3 ft deep with few fountains.

6. Shalimar Bagh

Nestled on the bank of the Dal Lake, Shalimar Bagh is one of the most beautiful Mughal Gardens in Srinagar. This part is said to have been a village and is the abode of love.

Four terraces are rising symmetrically, one above the other. The fourth terrace was the private part of the  Shalimar Garden , the females stayed there.

9. shankaracharya temple.

Shankaracharya Temple  in Srinagar is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It stands at the height of about 1852 m above sea level on the land on the top of Shankaracharya Hill. This temple is also famous for other names like Jyesteshwara temple or Pas-Pahar.

The temple got its name after the saint Shankaracharya, who visited the valley around the 10th century to spread his philosophy of Vedanta. He was well known for popularizing the worship of Lord Shiva in Kashmir.

The architectural beauty of this abode is noteworthy; the support of this temple is an octagonal platform. You have to climb a flight of around 100 stairs to enter the temple.

10. Kheer Bhawani Temple

Kheer Bhawani Temple  is one of the most famous Hindu temples in Kashmir Valley and the best place to visit in Srinagar with family.

This temple is situated just 14 miles from Srinagar near the village of Tula Mula and is dedicated to the goddess Kheer Bhawani.

The term kheer refers to rice pudding offered in the spring by the devotees. The exciting thing about kheer Bhawani Temple is that it is believed that the color of the spring turns black, which indicates disaster.

The associated legend says that Lord Rama, during his 14 years of exile, was a devotee of Ragnya Devi. Later, when his exile got over, Lord Hanuman shifted the seat of the goddess and brought him to this place.

Her wish was to be placed in the temple covered with smooth and beautiful stones, with old grown chinar trees (under this, the pilgrims reside). Maharaja Pratap Singh constructed the temple in 1912.

The eighth day of the full moon in May is considered significant, so the devotees fast on this particular day and gather at the temple as it is believed that the goddess changes the color of the spring water.

The Kheer Bhawani temple hosts an annual festival with countless followers and tourists. This temple is significant to the Kashmiri pundits.

11. Hazratbal Shrine

On the left bank of the famous Dal Lake is the Hazratbal Shrine, one of the best places to visit in Srinagar. It is home to the most sacred relic for Muslims, which is the hair of Prophet Muhammad.

The public display of the relic takes place on certain occasions. Hazrat means respected in Urdu, and Bal in Kashmiri means place, which gives the place the reverence it deserves.

Considered one of the most sacred Muslim pilgrimage sites in India, the mosque offers a spectacular view of the lake and the mountains, and the white marble structure of the shrine reflects on the lake displaying a picture of beauty.

It is believed that this mosque has been renovated thrice, and even after this, its magnificence remains the same. The serene environs of the mosque are opposed by the busy and noisy market right outside. However, each Friday the followers assemble here to offer their prayers.

14. dachigam national park.

Situated amongst Himalayan mountains, 22 km from Srinagar and spread over an area of 141 sq km, is the  Dachigam National Park . Although it is home to the endangered Hangul or Kashmiri stag, the area was previously a game preserve of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir.

Since 1910 the Park has become a protected area; it has the catchment area for the Harwan reservoir that supplies clean drinking water to the city. “Ten villages” is the literal meaning of Dachigam.

To create the game preserve and the catchment area, about 10 villages had to be repositioned. In particular, the park possesses over 500 species of herbs, 20 shrubs, and 50 different trees.

The park varies in altitude, and because of this, it is distinguished into upper and lower regions, and so has the vegetation.

This national park is home to Leopards, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, Himalayan Grey Langur, and many more. There are various birds too like Pygmy owlet, Himalayan Monal, koalas pheasant, Oriole, etc.

Because of its extreme height, the park can be seen covered in snow during the winter, and during the summer is filled with flowers, especially blue poppy and grasslands. This significant reserve has so much to hold and to give at the same time.

15. yousmarg.

Mughal Gardens

Srinagar is home to four Mughal gardens, which are Shalimar Bagh, Nishat garden, Chashma Shahi, and Pari Mahal. These gardens not only offer a glimpse into India’s rich history and culture but also provide a peaceful and serene environment for you to relax and unwind. Each garden is unique in its own way, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and gardens. You can find a glimpse of each garden as you scroll down.

Here are some general information about the Mughal gardens in Srinagar that will help you plan your trip:

• The gardens are open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.
• Entry fee per adult is Rs. 24 and for children is Rs. 12.
• The best times to visit the Mughal gardens in Srinagar are in April and in November. In April, the plants and shrubs are in full bloom, while in November, autumn paints the leaves of the large chinar trees brilliant shades of yellow and orange.
• You can take photos in Kashmiri attire in all of the Mughal gardens.

Shalimar Garden

Shalimar Garden is one of the most beautiful, and iconic Mughal gardens in Srinagar . The garden is located on the banks of Dal Lake and was built by Emperor Jahangir in 1619 for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. The garden is spread over 31 acres and is divided into three terraces, each with a unique theme and design.

One of the most unique features of Shalimar Garden is its water supply system. The garden is irrigated by a canal that runs through the center of the garden. The water flows through the canal and cascades down into the fountains and pools, creating a soothing and tranquil atmosphere.

Nishat Garden

Nishat Garden, also known as the “ Garden of Joy ,” is one of the most beautiful Mughal gardens in Srinagar. It is located on the banks of the Dal Lake and was built by Asif Khan, the brother-in-law of Emperor Jahangir, in 1633. Chashma Shahi

Chashma Shahi is a beautiful Mughal Garden located on the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains in Srinagar. It was built in 1632 by Ali Mardan Khan, a Mughal governor of Kashmir during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. The garden is known for its natural spring, which is believed to have medicinal properties and is a major tourist attraction in Srinagar.

Chashma Shahi is one of the smallest Mughal gardens in Srinagar , but it is also one of the most serene and peaceful. The garden is spread over 1.5 acres and is divided into three terraces, each with a unique theme and design.

Ashley’s Tip: Carry an empty bottle with you when visiting Chashma Shahi to fill in some water to drink from the natural spring in Chashma Shahi. It is said that the water here has healing properties.

The Pari Mahal was built by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in the 17th century. The primary purpose behind the construction of Pari Mahal was to serve as an observatory and a residence for Dara Shikoh.

Prince Dara Shikoh had a deep interest in astrology, Sufism, and various philosophical pursuits. Pari Mahal was designed to be a place where he could study astronomy and astrology. The location on the Zabarwan Range provided an elevated position with clear views of the sky, facilitating celestial observations.

Pari Mahal is also known for its unique blend of Islamic and Buddhist architecture. The palace has several arched doorways and windows, which are adorned with intricate carvings and designs. The palace also has several water fountains, which add to the beauty of the place.

Ashley’s Tip: If you are visiting Srinagar as part of a tour package, you are unlikely to have Pari Mahal on your itinerary. However, know that it is just 2.5 kilometers from Chashma Shahi and so you can demand your operator to take you anyhow. Trust me, it is worth your time!

Badamwari, also known as the Almond Garden , is a beautiful garden located in the heart of Srinagar. The garden is known for its stunning almond trees, which bloom during the spring season. I visited most of the gardens in Srinagar and in my opinion, Badamwari is the most beautiful garden in Srinagar.

The Badamwari was built by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the 17th century and was originally used as a hunting ground for the royal family. The garden is spread over 37 acres of land and has over 2000 almond trees, which bloom in shades of pink and white during the spring season.

Ashley’s Tip: Badamwari is open only for a limited time of the year from late March to early May or only when the almond flowers are in bloom. Check the dates before planning your trip here.

Tulip Garden

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, also known as the Tulip Garden , is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in Srinagar. It is located at the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains and is spread over 30 hectares (74 acres) of land.

The garden is known for its stunning tulip flowers, which bloom in various colors during the spring season.

The Tulip Garden was inaugurated in 2007 and is the largest tulip garden in Asia . The garden was built to promote tourism in the region and to showcase the beauty of Kashmiri flowers. Tulip garden is open to the public in April every year, which is the prime blooming season for the tulips.

The garden is divided into several sections, each with a unique color scheme and design. The tulips are planted in different patterns and designs, giving you a mesmerizing sight. The garden has over 1.5 million tulips of different colors, including red, yellow, orange, pink, and white.

Hari Parbat

Hari Parbat is a hill located in the city of Srinagar. The hill is home to an ancient temple, a Gurudwara and other structures, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Dal Lake.

The first fortification of Hari Parbat was started by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1590. He built an outer wall for the fort and a grand gate, called Kathi Darwaza. However, he could never complete the construction of a fort on Hari Parbat.

The construction of the Hari Parbat Fort, also known as Durrani Fort , took place in the 18th century under the rule of Atta Mohammad Khan, an Afghan governor. The Dal Lake is a stunningly beautiful lake that is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lush greenery. The Shikara ride offers you a unique opportunity to explore the lake and experience the culture and beauty of Srinagar.

Shikaras are traditional Kashmiri boats that are brightly colored and decorated. The boats are operated by local boatmen who are skilled in navigating the lake and know all the best spots to explore. The Shikara ride is a leisurely and relaxing experience that allows you to take in the breathtaking views of the lake and its surroundings.

During the Shikara ride, your guide will show you the main viewpoints on the way, including the beautiful Char Chinar Island, which is home to four majestic Chinar trees . You can also visit the floating vegetable gardens and observe the local fishermen at work.

Ashley’s Tip: Wazwan comes in a very large plate. To give you an idea, a half plate/trami is more than enough for four people . Keep this in mind when you try this so that you don’t waste your money or the food.

If you are visiting Srinagar, you have to have Kahwa chai!

Kahwa tea is a traditional Kashmiri tea a special blend of green tea leaves, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and other spices, along with almonds, walnuts, and saffron.

Kahwa tea is typically prepared in a special copper kettle called a “samovar.” The tea is brewed slowly over a low flame, allowing the flavors and aroma of the spices to infuse into the water and served hot.

Kahwa tea is not only delicious but also has several health benefits. The green tea leaves are rich in antioxidants, which help to boost the immune system and protect the body against disease. The saffron and other spices in the tea have anti-inflammatory properties and are believed to aid digestion and improve overall health.

Shopping in Srinagar

Whether you hire a taxi on your own or you are there on a packaged tour, you will be taken to the shopping emporium from where your taxi driver gets his commission. So, unless you are traveling on your own, you cannot go explore the shopping streets on your own.

If you want to buy authentic pashmina shawls, silk, or premium quality carpets, go to emporiums with long legacy. But if you are not particular about buying premium stuff, here’s what you can do to get good quality stuff at reasonable prices.

• Go shopping at the places your driver takes you to (as you really don’t have a choice sometimes) and bargain really hard.
• Don’t buy stuff from the first shop your driver takes you too. That will be the expensive kind. After spending some time in the shop come out looking disappointed and complain to your driver that it was pricy.
• Your driver will now take you to a cheaper place.
• If you want to get quality stuff at a really cheap rate, shop at the stores surrounding Jamia masjid. Your driver will not take you to any particular shop or shopping street that you ask them to as they may not get commission from there, however, they will take you to Jamia masjid anyway. This is where the locals shop, so you can be sure of the quality too.

What to Buy in Srinagar

Kashmir is famous for its rich cultural heritage and traditional handicrafts. There are several unique and beautiful items that you can buy in Srinagar, including:

Pashmina shawls – These soft and luxurious shawls are made from the fine wool of the Kashmir goat and are renowned for their warmth and beauty.

Kashmiri carpets – These hand-knotted woolen carpets are intricately designed and are famous for their durability and elegance.

Paper mache handicrafts – Kashmiri artisans create stunning paper mache items such as vases, bowls, and jewelry boxes, which are intricately painted with colorful designs.

Kashmiri spices – Kashmiri saffron, fennel, and other spices are highly prized for their unique flavors and aroma.

Wooden handicrafts – Kashmiri artisans are skilled in creating intricate wooden carvings, such as trays, boxes, and furniture.

A three-day itinerary is a great way to explore Srinagar and experience its best offerings. Here’s my suggested itinerary for a three-day trip to Srinagar:

Day 1 in Srinagar

Shalimar Garden: This is the most famous of the Mughal gardens.

Nishat Garden: If you are running out of time and weighing in leaving out one of the Mughal Gardens, then I would suggest Nishat Gardens.

Shikara Ride on Dal Lake: Plan to do shikara ride after 3:30 pm to avoid the piercing glare of the sun.

Day 2 in Srinagar

Shankracharya Temple: You will need to climb over 200 steps to reach the temple, so plan it first thing in the morning.

Chasma Shahi: Carry an empty bottle to fill in water from the natural spring with healing properties.

Pari Mahal: Pari Mahal is just 2.5 kilometers from Chashma Shahi, so you can cover them one after the other.

Tulip Garden: Open only for a limited time in the month of April. Plan your trip in the second or third week of April if you want to visit the tulip garden.

Shopping: As you will be in town on this day, you can go visit fancy emporiums in Srinagar on this day.

Day 3 in Srinagar

Hari Parbat: There will be a lot of walking, so plan Hari Parbat as the first thing in the morning.

Badamwari: Badamwari is on the way to Hari Parbat but visit this on your way down so as to cool yourself off after all that walking.

Jamia Masjid: This is where you can do shopping at cheap prices, so plan your timing accordingly.

Hazratbal Shrine: Plan to spend some time here as the view of Dal Lake from here is spectacular.
