ABOUT VAL D'ISERE, FRANCE

Val d'Isere offers the whole package: a quintessential mountain town surrounded by the kind of tall, jagged peaks, endless vertical and superior terrain that can only be found in the French Savoie Alps. It’s also home to many Olympic champions including legendary gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy, best known for his award of the Triple Crown of Alpine Skiing when he swept all three gold medals for the downhill races in the 1968 Olympic Games. The ski area, which is one of the largest in France, is linked with Tignes creating the formerly named “L’Espace Killy,” but now known as Tignes-Val d’Isere Resort. There are 186 miles of marked runs for every level of skier, as well as ample off-piste and untracked powder for the expert.

On a Val d’Isere ski vacation, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover that "the authentic skiers' village,” manages incredible harmony between modern tourism and local chalet-style architecture. This posh little village, which sits at over 6,000 feet, has been host to inhabitants since before the 11th century and became a fully operational ski resort after World War II. As host to some events of the '92 Winter Olympics, more polish was added to an already magnificent gem, and it now enjoys a reputation as one of France’s top-shelf resorts.

Après ski is one of the things Val d'Isere does best, known in particular for its iconic on-mountain restaurant: La Folie Douce. The spot is comprised of several bars and eateries in one and can cater to a sit-down experience or a celebration that includes dancing on the tables after a day on the slopes. Part of the location's appeal is its scheduled performers, ranging from DJs to local musicians and dance troupes, you can enjoy a show out on the veranda during lunch or when you're when you enter full-blown après mode.

While La Folie Douce is a must-stop, Val d'Isere is also known for its wide variety of restaurants in the village if you're seeking quieter dining or après experiences.

Ski Val d’Isere

Val d’Isere skiing is best suited for advanced intermediate and expert skiers, as the terrain is primarily steep and well above the tree line. Skiers and boarders with a penchant for leg burning runs and chasing thrills will be right at home on a Val d’Isere ski vacation. Mogul lovers will want to visit Epaule du Charvet, a steep, ungroomed black run with the most consistent moguls anywhere in the Val d’Isere valley. Val d’Isere also offers several world-class off-piste descents, so be sure to hire a guide for ultimate enjoyment and safety.

For easier, rolling runs for warming up or beginner skiers, we suggest heading up the Bellevarde side of the mountain and exploring the Grand Pre piste green run or the blue Club des Sports pistes. Val d’Isere does offer guests a selection of beginner and intermediate options at the Soliase ski area, like the gully Piste L, one of the more popular blue runs at the resort.

Freestyle skiers and snowboarders will enjoy dropping into the famed Snowpark which features five different terrain park levels depending on what you’re looking for. Jump on a line designed for your ability and level of progression with rails, boxes and jumps so you can properly, and safely, send it.

Limitless Skiing and Things to Do in Val D'Isere!

Skiing for Miles If you have only skied in the U.S. it is hard to imagine how big Val D’Isere is. The terrain is endless. The scenery breathtaking. The lift system was very efficient with a great combination of chairlifts, gondolas, and funiculars. Your pass allows you to ski at neighboring Tignes which affords even more trail options and another nice town to explore for lunch. And being in France the food was amazing. We did not have a bad meal and wished we could have tried even more of the restaurants. The town is not as quaint as say Zermatt; it’s essentially one nice street through the valley. There are some nice shops and the aforementioned great restaurants. There is a very convenient, free bus that takes you around town and to different base areas. It comes frequently so there is little waiting. We only wish the resort was closer to the airport as the ride back took 3.5 hours on a Friday night after taking only 2.5 hours to get there.
Best SKiing Ever! (out of 5 countries so far) Great trails, massive and long runs, usually little or no lift lines (mid March). Good restaurants on mountain. The lift, gondola, and magic carpets were plentiful and easy to figure out, but with tons of options to ski both Val D'Isere and easy to get to Tignes side. The village is great with nice restaurants, and friendly workers everywhere. Easy to get to from Geneva

Once on the slopes, things really opened up.  The terrain stretches about as far as the eye can see and into neighboring Tignes, providing more than enough to entertain any skier/rider.  The resort consists of endless bowls but all feature at least one or two lifts out so, even if you do get turned around, you can always make it back to the village fairly easily. If you are looking for a resort that really has it all and somehow manages to simplify it's own vastness in one centralized village area, Val D'Isere is a great choice.

Beautiful French Village and an Amazing Ski Resort! 4.9 Excellent 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 3.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 I just had a chance to visit beautiful Val d'Isere.  I loved the village and the mountain!  It is a charming French ski village that sits right at the base of the Espace Killy ski area.  This incredible ski area has terrain for every skier.   The amount of terrain is amazing.  There is so much skiable terrain I would highly recommend a ski guide for the first few days to get familiar with the area.  In addition to great skiing the mountain offers great on mountain dining and entertainment.  One of the most popular lunch/après spots is  La Folie Douce.  On a sunny day it is great to go there to enjoy the view, lunch and the live music and dance show with paragliders circling overhead! Val D’isere offers an abundance of lodging option for every price range. Most of the lodging is at the base of the mountain or a short walk or shuttle ride to the lifts.  The village of Val d’Isere  offers  a wide variety of shopping , restaurants, après and nightlife options!   This French Ski Resort has something for everyone!

Worth the Trip!!! NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR NR I just got back from a fantastic trip through some of the French ski resorts, and Val d'isere is a true stand out!  The skiing is massive and connects with Tignes to create a uniquely French Alps experience.  There are slopes that cater to all levels of experience, as well as some pedestrian friendly lifts that allow the non skier to explore the mountains and meet up for some exceptional on mountain dining. The village is somewhat relatable to Vail in that it has a vibrant central shopping and dining scene (don't miss the Monday market), with just a short walk to everything from most hotels. A variety of options await you, and I'll be happy to help you put it all together!

The resort is home to La Folie Douce, the most famous mountain club of the Alps that attracts crowds of people year after year - a stop here is the only acceptable way to end the day with a pint and a boogie before skiing or snowboarding your way back down to the village.

Beginners skiing in Val d'Isère

A few nursery slopes in the resort, served by free lifts, are complemented by a new high-altitude sector for beginners at the top of the new Solaise lift. These nursery slopes are served by three covered magic carpet lifts. The area is designed especially for children from 3 to 10 years old. The four areas encourage children to try their hand at snow sports, whilst having fun at the same time.

Intermediate skiing in Val d'Isère

Intermediate skiing in Val d'Isere has practically unlimited possibilities and there are some exhilarating runs from Bellevarde down to La Daille or you can cruise down the Iseran valley as far as Le Fornet. Most of the relaxing blue runs are at a high altitude meaning you'll have a good chance of fresh powder throughout the whole season. If you're more on the experienced side and would like a challenge, the red runs and descent into the valley are a great choice and we'd recommend hitting these early in the day before the slopes get too busy.

Advanced skiing and off piste in Val d'Isère

The famous 'Face' piste - the men's Olympic downhill - is a must, as are some of the resort's unrivalled off-piste, especially on the Le Fornet side. Take a local qualified guide and explore the glorious bowls and challenging couloirs of this huge area. Or use a guide to go ski touring to discover the untracked areas. Each day at 2pm on the Front de neige you can practise with transceivers and probes to discover 'victims' with the help of an expert.

The Bellevarde side of the mountain is where most of Val d'Iseres off piste trails are and has wide open terrain for you to enjoy. The Lost Valley is a slightly narrower track and will involve navigating your way between rocks and trees - it's also known as one of the most beautiful runs in resort! But if you're looking for some powder practice we'd recommend heading over to La Daille where there is extensive off piste tracks as well as moguls and the ungroomed 'naturide' paths for varied terrain.

Snowboarding in Val d'Isere

A boarders' paradise: very few drag lifts and lots of off-piste. The world-class snowpark has 30 kickers and obstacles for beginners to advanced. It is located on Bellevarde beside the slalom course and is easily reached from the top of the Olympique gondola or the Funival funicular from La Daille. There are also two natural ski/boardercross courses on Bellevarde and another track on Solaise for racers to pit their skills against each other in a safe but fun environment.

Cross country skiing in Val d'Isere

Val d'Isere has a total of 21 kilometres of tracks for cross country skiing split over 1 green slope, 4 blue slopes and 2 red slopes. The cross country tracks are free to use and are marked on the Tignes-Val d'Isere piste map. One of our favourite trails is the Ouillette lake which is located at the top of the Solaise cable car towards the Madeleine chairlift on the right hand side.

Things to do in Val d'Isere

Restaurants, food and drink .

Throughout resort there are plenty of restaurants serving traditional French cuisine as well as a few pizzerias and Italian restaurants. There is also a Michelin star restaurant and Michelin guide restaurants if you feel like fancying up your evening meal one night of your holiday. During the day, you'll also find plenty of places to pit stop and refuel with a light lunch and a coffee, with a range of cafes and bakeries serving a selection of cakes, sandwiches and pastries.

Val d'Isere is a great location for families as France is very relaxed with the idea of bringing children to restaurants so the majority of places to eat in Val d'Isere are family friendly. This doesn't mean that everywhere will have dedicated children's menus as French families usually eat together at the same times, but we can assure you that they'll be happy to accommodate your requests as best they can.

Après, bars, clubs and nightlife

It's true that Val d'Isere wouldn't be the resort it is today without a good dose of après ski to end your active day. If you're an après veteran it'll be no doubt you'll recognise this name - La Folie Douce - the biggest mountain club across the alps. What better way to party than dancing on the table in snow gear alongside your friends all whilst listening to a DJ and professional singers/dancers. The club is located half way down the OK piste on the way to La Daille, so there is still opportunities to ski or snowboard back to resort after a beer or two; but if you'd prefer to party a bit harder you can always take the gondola back down to the village.

If you want to continue the party into the early hours of the morning you're in luck as Val d'Isere also has several bars and clubs that are open until late. Dick's Tea Bar is a great option for late night partying with great resident DJs as well as some surprise guest appearances.

Spas and relaxation

Centre Aquasportif, the local sports centre in Val d'Isere, has five main areas available including the beach world, the wellness zone, the sports world, the wellbeing world and the lounge area and these areas are dedicated to sport, relaxation and your well-being. You can also keep yourself entertained with a variety of activities from climbing, swimming, squash and basketball - they even have their own virtual golf simulator! You can also treat yourself and book a local massage or beauty treatment during your stay for ultimate relaxation.

Most of the accommodation we offer also provide access to spa and wellness facilities such as hot tubs with views of the peaks, or private saunas that are perfect after a day skiing.

Val d'Isere is home to a diverse range of shops. It's no surprise that across resort you'll find high-spec sports shop selling ski and snowboarding equipment as well as some of the top sports clothing brands like Burton, The North Face and Salomon. Don't worry, Val d'Isere also has a range of high fashion shops for those of you looking to expand your everyday wardrobe, stretching as far as jewellery, beauty and perfume shops. Take a slice of France home with you thanks to the regional food and drink shops that are dotted around the village, selling local wines, cheeses, biscuits and sweet treats. You'll also find a range of gift and souvenir shops, so whether you want a little something for yourself, or need a present for a special occasion, Val d'Isere has you covered.

Festivals and events

During Christmas week, there are a large variety of festivities for everyone in the family to enjoy. Giant snow sculptures and snow scenes will be found throughout the resort and a number of live shows will be played on stage at the 'Olympique Avenue'. On Christmas Eve, explore the slopes to find Father Christmas before he delivers his presents - this is a great opportunity to give him your Christmas list! In the evening, Father Christmas, his elves and giant toys will be arriving in the village and on Christmas Day, the French National Ski School Christmas show will celebrate with a torchlight descent in the evening. And finally, celebrate with the family on New Year's Eve watching the fireworks, the ski school freestyle show and torchlight descent down the mountain.

Ice skating

Located in the heart of the village, there is an artificial ice skating rink - the Patinoire de Val d'Isere - and is great fun for all the family. It is open all winter 7 days a week, weather dependant of course, and there is a small refreshment chalet located on site for snacks and hot drinks to warm you up.

Ice driving and karting

Val d'Isere has one driving school offering training courses supervised by professionals for ice driving. They have one car and one motorcycle track as well as a ice karting track and driving simulator that replicates the real sensations felt when driving on a real race car track. Ice driving improves you reflexes, helps you respond to risks and sets out to improve your driving in general. If you don't want to drive, you can also experience drifting on the ice at speed as a passenger with a professional race driver who all have national certificates of motor sports.

Paragliding

Val d'Isere is a great place to learn to fly thanks to it's many clubs and organisations in the resort whose sole purpose is to get you up in the air. Flights can be taken with a qualified instructor and it's good to know that no level of fitness is required for this activity, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the spectacular birds-eye views.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiles are great fun and a fab way to explore the side of the mountains the ski slopes don't touch. It's up to you to decide whether you want to be a passenger or a driver but either way you'll have opportunities to experience untouched landscapes surrounding Mont Blanc, Bellevarde summit and the Sache - and some great opportunities for photos!

Fun areas for all

⬥ At the top of the Solaise gondola lift, explore mountain jobs as a family with ValKids play area, featuring child-sized equipment, including a fun run, a mini first aid post, a control panel, and a snow groomer.

⬥ At an altitude of 2000 meters, the older ones can explore 'Le Village Perdu,' navigating on footbridges and discovering wooden cabins surrounded by larch trees. 'Le Village Perdu' has been designed sustainably, in collaboration with the Office National des Forêts, without clearing or grading, using only Alpine larch as the material. Access is exclusively via skis, via the Diebold (blue) / Critérium (blue) or Orange (red) runs. The area is secured but not groomed and is therefore suitable for experienced skiers.

Overview of Val D'Isere

Skiworld Team In-Resort- We have a Skiworld team based in this resort who are there from the moment you arrive until you depart to make sure that every aspect of your holiday runs smoothly. As well as having their contact details should you need them, they will be in contact with you during your stay to help with anything you may need and to make sure that you get the most from your ski holiday with us.

Val d'Isère skiing started life as the not so humble medieval hunting grounds of the Dukes de Savoie. The settlement dates back to 1553 - pretty impressive for a village that sits at 1850m above sea level and gets an average of 5m of snow per winter.

Val d'Isère successfully reinvented itself as one of the world's finest ski resorts in time for the 1992 Albertville Olympics.

Ski Val d'Isère and you will find a village that is everything a skier could wish for - beautiful yet lively, with plenty of amazing places to eat, combined with some seriously impressive skiing. The resort oozes an old-fashioned aloofness and is certainly one of the four priciest in France. But whilst you may see plenty of posers and ski bling, Val d'Isère accommodation covers everything from 5* hotels to comfortable Val d'Isère chalets, plus more reasonable Val d'Isère ski apartments , especially if you are willing to stay in the satellite villages of La Daille, Le Laisanant or Le Fornet (which are all linked by frequent and free ski buses).

Whilst some may wish to be seen strutting around the villages of other high-end resorts, those who have the skills to go with their La Croix skis and their Chanel onesies head to Val d'Isère to be seen on the slopes. Keep reading to learn more about this resort and why to go on a Val d'Isere ski holiday.

3 Things We Love About Val d'Isère

  • Quality Ski Area –  Val d'Isère is part of the  Tignes-Val d’Isère Ski Area . This provides you with access to the runs in Tignes as well as Val d'Isère. The combined ski area this gives you is huge and helps it rank among the best ski areas in the world.
  • World Class Après-ski – In terms of both on-mountain wining and dining, and after-hours partying in the village, Val d’Isère leads the way where après is concerned.
  • Heritage – The traditional architecture should be enough to let you know, the resort has been here for centuries and the prestige has been building since the parish church was built in 1664.

Skiing and Boarding in Val D'Isere

Val d’Isère skiing has a pedigree that few other resorts can't match. Jean-Claude Killy considered the “Daddy” of elite French skiing in many circles, left a legacy which includes 300km of pistes and over 10,000ha of lift-served off-piste skiing terrain.

This is one of the world’s best for experts with more skiable terrain than Whistler Blackcomb.

Piste breakdown

Here is a piste breakdown:

Beginners may find that even some of the green and blue runs can be tricky to negotiate and the runs back down into resort are nearly all either black, difficult reds or very crowded. As a novice, the trick is to head high, look for the gentle, wide blues and then head down to the bottom on a gondola at the end of the day. At the bottom of the Solaise lift, the runs are wide and gentle.

For intermediates , few areas are better than the top of Le Fornet, the Grand Pré or the lovely blues under the Glacier Express lift. Stronger intermediates should make sure they tackle the OK-Orange down from the top of the Olympique gondola, a high-speed rolling red.

For advanced skiers, the advantage of being above the treeline is that virtually every face offers myriad possibilities especially when the snow is nice and deep. Skiworld recommends that any off-piste skiing should be undertaken with a local guide; avalanches can and do occur in this area. On-piste, the most challenging run is La Face - the extremely steep and mogulled black that hosts the Men’s downhill.

Freestyle lovers will already know about the big jumps and rails of the Val Park but if that all sounds like hard work, spectators can cheer them on from the viewing sundeck, whilst enjoying the BBQ and music. For those after a half pipe you'll be able to use the one over in Tignes if you get the full area lift pass.

Cross-Country Trails - Within Val d'Isere you'll find 7 cross country trails for you to use, which cover 31.3km.

Lift Passes in Val d'Isère

Val d’Isère is paired with Tignes (next door) to offer 300km of pistes and a further 20km of unpisted but marked ‘ski routes’. Buying a full area pass is the way to go as the neighbouring areas are so well connected that even first time beginners will benefit from having the option to explore far and wide, including heading down to one of the many villages for lunch. In Val d’Isère you get 1 free access during your stay to a swimming pool (“Le Lagon”) in Tignes.

Activities in Val D'Isere

  • Climbing wall – Located in the Centre Sportif and open from 10 am – 9 pm every day. Pit your wits against the 135m2 of climbing holds as you attempt to scale the 12m wall. Suitable for total beginners, experts and everyone in between.
  • Swimming – The Aquasportif centre in Val d’Isere is a great place to spend a day off the slopes. There is loads to do, with the swimming pools being the main draw, where the main pool merges seamlessly with integrated hot tubs and a river rapids section.
  • Spas – Treatments are available privately as well as at the Sports Centre. Depending on your requirements and budget you can find pretty much any spa treatment in Val d’Isere. There are therapists that will happily come to your accommodation for a treatment too.
  • Golf simulator – Keep your swing in check with a visit to the golf simulator at the sports centre. Book with a group of friends and you can even compete in a mini competition.
  • Ice driving – Head over to Tignes les Brevieres to experience ice driving! Professional drivers teach you the basics and show you the ropes in a controlled environment but one that certainly raises your adrenaline! You’ll learn some really valuable skills too. Totally worth it!
  • Shops & market - What would a trip to Val d’Isere be without a bit of retail therapy? There are shops and boutiques to suit all tastes, whether you’re looking for something formal, sporty, ski-related or just a souvenir or two. Also, you will find some great local produce at the market, from fresh fruits and vegetables to Savoyard cheeses and cold meats.
  • Bowling - At the far end of the Sofa Bar, Les Barmes de l’Ours has two tenpin bowling lanes which can accommodate up to twelve people where its guests can have fun with their family or friends in Val d’Isère.
  • Bungee jumping  -  At 2600m altitude, on ski or on snowboard try the 30-metre jump for an unforgettable experience.  Attached at the waist by two elastic bands (similar to those for a bungee jump), all you have to do is allow gravity to propel you down the ramp, lauching you in to 35 metres of space.
  • Cinema -  With family, alone, or with friends, the Splendid cinema of Val d’Isère welcomes you to the Maison de Val, located at 320 rue de la Face.
  • Helicopter rides -  Experience the beauty of the mountains by taking an amazing tour in a helicopter to view stunning, remote locations. Get a birdseye view of the Espace Killy and Three Valleys ski domains and their nature reserves as well as the Mont Blanc Valley.

Après Ski in Val D'Isere

  • La Folie Douce (on the mountain) – Rocking cabaret, live music, amazing atmosphere. ‘Folie’ is one of the must-visit spots on the slopes in Val d’Isere. The afternoon cabaret show is often heard before seen and it’s open to all. If you don’t want to ski home, just hop on the gondola and down-load back to town.
  • Doudoune Chalet (on the mountain) - Live bands, happy hour, awesome vibe…
  • Café Face (on the mountain) - After Folie the live music continues, singers go down to café face at the bottom of the piste in the town. Beer is on happy hour starting from €1.80 for a pint and going up in price every 20 mins.
  • Petit Danois - Lively Danish bar opposite Chalet Cherrier. Open until 2 am and featuring a DJ most nights. Pole dancing is available at your own risk!
  • Underground Café - The Best pre-club bar in Val d’Isere, as voted by our seasonnaires. A DJ every night playing a variety of house music. Also features a pool table and private areas can be reserved for your group if you call ahead.
  • Pacific Bar - For all your sports watching needs. Showing a variety of British, Continental and World sport, including Premier League and Champions League football and all the big Rugby matches.
  • Skiworld Lodge Bar - Friendly Skiworld staff, sky sports, chilled atmosphere, cocktails and most importantly… a happy hour with amazing deals!
  • Victor’s Bar - 2-4-1 cocktails between 8 pm and 10.30pm most nights. Plenty of tunes and plenty of dancing. Always a good vibe at Victor’s.
  • Cocorico - Located by the Rond-Point des Pistes, this bar is, without a doubt, the place to be for party-hard après ski. There is live music every night of the week, followed by a live DJ playing popular tunes to get everybody moving. The party rocks until 8pm, but if you want to carry on dancing, head downstairs to Doudoune, one of the biggest nightclubs in Val d'Isère.
  • Le Petit Danois - Head to this lively, Scandinavian-run après haunt for brilliant live bands and a happy hour between 4pm and 5pm.
  • XV (Bar 15) - This unique venue is half mountain hut, half rugby-club dressing room. They even serve the beer in rugby ball-shaped glasses.

Places to eat in Val D'Isere

Each week, two high-altitude restaurants will open their doors by night and invite guests to enjoy the most memorable nights of their holidays. The Folie Douce , reached by the La Daille gondola or on touring skis, welcomes guests for dinner on Tuesdays. In turn, Le Refuge de Solaise will be open to visitors for dinner on Wednesdays and Sundays. Access it via the Solaise gondola.

  • Taverne d’Alsace - If you’re looking to get away from the Savoyarde menus, this is a perfect option. Big but cosy, and dishes include sea bass and risotto, hot and cold beef, lamb wrapped in pastry, scallops and polenta. Located on the main street. Booking is advisable.
  • Perdrix Blanche – Looking for a lazy lunch in town? Head to Perdrix Blanche for seafood specials, sushi, pizzas, salads and meat options such as steaks and schnitzels.
  • Sur la Montagne - Suitable for all the family, offering traditional dishes such as pizzas and pasta. The kid’s play area can be a godsend for parents!
  • La Corniche - Traditional Savoyard dishes set in an authentic ambience. Raclettes, piriades, fondues, Magret de canard, steaks… You’ll smell the delicious scent of melting cheese as you walk in.
  • 1789 – A small, family-run restaurant known for its Cote de Boeuf, which they will cook on an open fire in front of you. A great experience and delicious.
  • L’Ouilette Plage (on the mountain) - At the top of the Solaise express chairlift and at the bottom of the Madeleine piste, this restaurant is quite possibly the best place to go when the sun is shining. They operate a BBQ from 12 - 2.30pm featuring steak, duck and chicken all served with salad and jacket potatoes.
  • La Fruitiere (on the mountain) - Posh and a tad expensive, but attached to La Folie Douce it’s all about the atmosphere and superb service as much as the delicious food and daily specials on offer.
  • Tete de Solaise (on the mountain) – Food offerings are simple and basic but reasonably priced and the location is unbeatable for lounging in the sun with a mountain view. The outdoor bar opens and music starts from 3 pm.
  • L'Avancher - One of the best options for a traditional alpine meal, they've been serving their signature raclette for 40 years, and also offer fondues and meat dishes like duck and côte de boeuf.
  • La Table de l'Ours, Les Barmes de l'Ours Hotel - A Michelin-starred restaurant, with a roaring log fire and modern French menu that includes dishes like john dory with apple mousse, roast pigeon, and black forest cake with blueberry sorbet.
  • Le Lodge - Relaxed and friendly, here you can get all the usual Alpine fare as well as juicy steaks and great pizza.
  • Le Petite Danois - A Danish-style bar with a varied international menu. Take your pick from nachos, burgers, currys and wraps.

French Winter Ski Guide: Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère is a perfect winter destination for both beginner and advanced skiers. You’ll find over 300 kilometers of ski runs in this winter paradise, which are best explored with a private guide. Besides skiing, Val d’Isère is home to great nightlife, dining, and wonderful hotels. Don’t miss this charming Alpine town with its baroque church along with stone and wood chalets. Read on to discover our French winter ski guide featuring Val d’Isère.

How to Get to Val d’Isère

val d'isère french winter ski guide

You can get to Val d’Isère by either plane, train, or automobile. Because of unpredictable winter weather, we recommend either flying into a neighboring airport or taking the train and letting us arrange a private transfer for you. There are four international airports near Val d’Isère: Geneva and Lyon, which are a three hour drive, and Chambéry and Grenoble, which are a two hour drive.

You can also take a high speed train (either TGV , Eurostar , or Thalys ) to the Bourg-Saint-Maurice station, which is a 45 minute drive to Val d’Isère.

What to Do in Val d’Isère

val d'isere what to do french winter ski guide

Val d’Isère is known for skiing. To make the most of your experience, we recommend getting a three-day ski pass and booking a private ski instructor. Skiers of all styles and levels will enjoy the fabulous slopes, including beginners and kids. There are also plenty of other winter activities besides skiing including ice skating, fat tire biking, sledding, hand skiing, ice driving, ice climbing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and paragliding.

After you’ve finished skiing, be sure to partake in a favorite French pastime, the après-ski. Whether you want to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine or have a refreshing glass of Champagne or beer, you’re sure to find plenty of people enjoying themselves. There are famous restaurants on the mountain like La Folie Douce or charming places in the center of the village where you can partake in the fun.

Children can enjoy ice skating, the bowling alley, the movie theater, or the Aquasportif Center.

We can arrange a private ski guide to accompany you daily. Our Ski Guides know the ski areas inside out as well as where the snow conditions are best. Where to Eat in Val d’Isère

where to eat in val d'isère gigi

You’ll find a wide range of restaurants in Val d’Isère from gastronomic options to casual brasseries, mountainside restaurants and more.

When in the French Alps, we always recommend trying the local Savoyard cuisine. Cheese and potatoes are the stars of many of the dishes including raclette , a melted cheese scraped off from the wheel and typically served with potatoes and meats, tartiflette , a gratin-like dish made with potatoes, reblochon cheese, onions, and lardons, and fondue , a melted mix of Comté , Beaufort , and other local cheeses that you dip bread into using a fondue skewer. In Val d’Isère, two great places to try the local Savoyard cuisine are La Corniche and Le Barillon .

La Table de l’Ours is regarded as one of the best restaurants in the area. This Michelin-starred restaurant offers fine dining in a warm, inviting chalet atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to warm up by the fire after a long day of skiing.

For wonderful views, don’t miss the mountaintop restaurant Gigi .

Where to Stay in Val d’Isère

airelles mademoiselle

In the center of Val d’Isère, perched on the edge of the ski slopes, sits Mademoiselle, a 5-star resort overlooking the majestic summits of the Vanoise mountains. The property invites those enamored with the mountains to live their own fairy tale. Inspired by the medieval period, Mademoiselle conjures up the architecture of the most beautiful residences in the Alps from long ago. A grandiose and separate world, the hotel is as luxurious as it is welcoming. The property also boasts a nearly 4,000 square foot Guerlain spa, magical children’s kingdom, cozy ski salon, gallery of boutiques hosting iconic brands, and four restaurants.

Another unique option in Val d’Isère is the Refuge de Solaise. This 5-star ski resort is nestled at an altitude of over 8,300 feet. From here you can take in a gorgeous sky of incredible purity, hanging over infinite landscapes of snow and ice. A stay at this hotel is about living in harmony with the light, surrounded by spectacular panoramas in an environment far removed from the hustle and bustle of the world below. The 16 rooms and four apartments offer views over the village, the valley and the mountains as far as the eye can see. The restaurant has a spacious feel with its extensive size and Alpine décor that blends beautiful local materials to create a warm yet understated look.

Located at 1,850m, Val d’Isere has more traditional Alpine charm than many resorts with parts of the ‘Vieux Village’ dating back to 1664. Despite having expanded over the years the town retains its character with newer developments generally using natural stone and wood.

This resort has a deserved reputation as a great place for food, drink and socialising. There are nearly 100 different places to eat and drink when you include those on the mountain. Be sure to visit La Folie Douce if you fancy a mountain party accompanied by dancers and musicians; it’s an experience few venues can rival.

The partly pedestrianised town centre is lively in the evenings offering a huge choice of après ski options from a quiet drink to partying until 4am if you’ve the energy! Bananas or Dick’s Tea Bar are always a popular option. There’s a free bus that runs until the early hours in high season throughout the resort for the night owls.

All of our chalet packages include flights to Lyon along with airport transfers. The transfer from Lyon airport to Val d’Isère is approximately 2hrs 45mins.

For guests wishing to travel by train, the nearest station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice. A transfer from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to the resort takes approximately 45 minutes.

Driving is another option and we are able to supply detailed directions. The driving time from Calais is around 10 hours. We recommend Eurotunnel FlexiPlus** service that gives greater flexibility and avoids boarding queues.

Did You Know, Val d’Isere…

  • Has a parish church – a prominent landmark in the town centre – and it was built in 1664!
  • Once had a hailstorm that halted the Tour de France as it passed through the resort.
  • Hosted an infamous outing for Edina and Patsy in an episode of Absolutely Fabulous.

The skiing in Val d’Isere and the wider ski area is astonishing. It is a truly world class destination with few real rivals. It truly is a dream ski holiday destination.

Figures quoted are for the Val d’Isere and Tignes ski holiday area as a whole.

Ski between 1,550m and 3,456m 300km of pistes Green – 8% Blue – 47% Red – 29% Black – 17% 82 lifts

60% of the 300km of slopes are above 2500m

900+ snow cannons across the area

As you would expect from such high altitude resorts, Val d’Isere has an excellent snow record.

You can generally expect base snow depths of around 1m+ and in excess of 1.8m on the upper slopes.

Quality and cover are generally very good from the start to the very end of the season.

Many of the slopes face more or less north and there is access to glaciers at Pissaillas or in Tignes.

Non Skiing Activities

Val d’Isere isn’t just a perfect ski holiday destination, it has far more to offer. Whilst an amazing place to spend time on the slopes, is also a great option for activities away from the pistes.

At this resort, you’ll find a huge number of activities to do in and out of the snow that will make your holiday even better. They all guarantee fun, and some are activities that you won’t be able to do anywhere else!

Take a look at the options below and be overcome with inspiration of all the new experiences you’ll be able to enjoy on your trip! Whilst we can’t book these activities for you, our team will be able to help you with recommendations and guidance to get your itinerary sorted!

Adrian - Ski Expert "The infamous 'Face' is a must ski/snowboard run for the more advanced riders in Val d'Isere. The Plan Millet in the Solaise area is great for carving/cruising down as well. For apres ski either head to the Folie Douce or Cocorico and then Dick's Tea Bar until the early hours - good luck!"

VAL D'ISERE

Travel sustainably - leaf icon

Ski holidays in Val d'Isere are a firm favourite with SkiWeekends guests, not only for its chocolate box chalets and village centre but also the après ski and nightlife. The ski area (Tignes-Val dIsere, formerly the Espace Killy) has something for everyone, from free access to the nursery slopes to some epic off-piste terrain. Val d'Isere is made up of three main areas, up the valley towards Italy is Le Fornet, ‘Val Village’ in the centre and La Daille is down the valley and closest to Tignes . All three areas are linked with a very regular and free bus service (the Train Rouge) so wherever you stay it’s easy to get around. Val d'Isere is known for its party atmosphere as much as it's skiing and has many bars to choose from for après ski, after dinner and nightclubs, so perfect for those looking for a more lively ski holiday.

Our top hotel picks for a ski holiday in Val d'Isere:  Hotel Le Val d'Isere , the Hotel L'Aigle des Neiges , Hotel Avenue Lodge , or the Hotel Ormelune .

SKI AREA OVERVIEW

Named after Jean-Claude Killy the triple Olympic champion, the Espace Killy ski area offers over 300km of pistes. From Le Fornet to Tignes les Brevieres you would be hard pushed to cover the area in a week, let alone a weekend!  With the Pissaillas Glacier in Le Fornet at the top of the valley, the Solaise ski area in the middle and Bellevarde area towards Tignes, all areas offer different ski routes back down to the village, for those who don’t want to get the lift down. Although some of these runs are marked green on the piste map, some parts of them may feel quite steep to novice skiers, so if your legs are tired we recommend the lift.  If your skiing is up to it there are a few challenging black runs in the Espace Killy, including the infamous ‘Face’ run on the Bellevarde side which comes back into the village and was used for the mens downhill in the 1992 Winter Olympics as well as the 2009 World Championships.  The Pissaillas Glacier in Le Fornet also offers skiing in the summer, as does the Grande Motte above Tignes.

And no ski holiday to Val d'Isere would be complete without tackling the blue 'half pipe' run of Santons back down to the village, and of course riding the stomach turning Leissières 'up and over' lift!

Val d'Isere ski holidays await!

The resorts are linked by lift, piste & lift pass, effectively creatively one massive ski resort.  Sitting at over 6,000 feet the posh yet laid-back base village, built in 1971, has all the resort amenities you could wish for - shopping, entertainment, and delicious cuisine. It is an authentic skiers' village that manages incredible harmony between modern tourism and local chalet-style architecture. You will be staying in comfortable lodging in the village at The Kandahar Hotel with quick and easy ski access each morning after breakfast.

The après-ski scene is famous for being lively, with ample opportunity to dance in your ski boots at popular party venues like La Folie Douce. But there is plenty of variety - relax by the fire with a quiet cocktail or tea if this is more your 'cup of tea'.

Take in the beautiful views, ski your legs off, and relax on this hassle-free trip.

The 10 best ski resorts in France

T he French lay claim to the best cuisine, the best wines, and the best variety of ski resorts of any country in the world. While the first two are open to question these days, the third is undoubtedly true.

Destinations range from the high-altitude and purpose-built like Val Thorens with the seemingly endless terrain of the 600km Trois Vallées ski area on its doorstep, to lesser-known farming villages with traditional French ambience and tree-lined slopes like Les Carroz.

British visitors may find that their expensively-purchased Euros go further in bars and restaurants in Austria and Italy , and indeed in Eastern Europe , in these financially-challenging times. But staying in lesser-known French destinations, or lower satellite villages that link to a big-name area (Les Carroz links into the Grand Massif area, shared with better known Flaine ), are attractive ways to reduce costs.

Nevertheless, the process of going uphill is becoming more expensive: lift pass prices across France have generally rocketed this year. It pays to check out the growing variety of different tickets on offer, such as localised, family or group passes. Val Cenis is the first resort to introduce a ‘weatherproof’ pass – if snow or rain falls for more than three hours, you get your money back for that day, even if you’ve skied.

Chalet packages with UK tour operators continue to offer some of the best value in French resorts, although tour operators have made changes to the traditional model in recent years, in the face of increasing costs and pressure of the pandemic. Many companies have reduced the number of chalets they offer or scrapped them all together. Self-catering has also become a more enticing proposition , staying in increasingly upmarket newly-built apartment residences with swimming pool and spa areas.

Big reductions in the number of package holidays mean that booking well in advance has become more essential than ever , particularly if planning half-term or Easter breaks in France’s most popular resorts. Here’s our pick of where to go.

Best for beginners

Courchevel , famous for its glitz and multi-million-euro property prices, might at first glance seem an unusual choice for novices, but the resort has many facets. Situated at one end of the giant Trois Vallées ski area that includes Méribel and Val Thorens, 1850 is the smartest, most expensive and highest of the six Courchevel villages.

In less fashionable Moriond (also known as 1650), Village (1550), Le Praz (1300) and nearby La Tania and Saint Bon there is much cheaper accommodation to be found. Moriond is ideal for beginners, with gentle nursery slopes well away from the inter-resort traffic of the rest of the Trois Vallées. But at the same time it’s suitable for the more advanced, with easy access to a huge variety of terrain that is tucked away from the main hustle and bustle. The slopes around the altiport area of 1850 are also extremely good for beginners, with mild gradients and easy lifts.

There’s a wide choice of ski and snowboard schools, but learning from a native English speaker is an advantage, and these schools are British-run: BASS Courchevel, Marmalade, Momentum, New Generation, Supreme Ski (now run by Maison Sports), Sweet Snowsports, The Snow School and The Development Centre.

Parents needn’t worry about inexperienced small children on chairlifts during classes – children in ESF ski school groups wear waistcoats equipped with electro-magnets that lock on to the chair and release automatically at the top. After a day on the slopes, or on a day off, there’s the Aquamotion complex, easily accessed from Moriond and Village. It has two swimming-pools, a spa, an indoor climbing wall and a surf wave.

Where to stay

Regarding the best accommodation in Courchevel , Le Ski has 23 chalets in Moriond and neighbouring La Tania and 41 years of experience in offering holidays here. Le Mollard in Moriond used to be a chalet for 16, but has now been reconfigured as a chalet for eight. It’s got an outdoor hot tub, two TV rooms and a giant living area. From £1,116, with Le Ski .

Alternatives

Alpe d’Huez , Morzine or Val Cenis all have dedicated nursery slopes out of the way of ski traffic.

Best for intermediates

Serre chevalier.

This is the collective name for a dozen villages along the road from the ancient garrison town of Briançon in the southern Alps. They share a ski area with a respectable 250km of varied but mainly intermediate slopes, served by 59 lifts.

Think of Serre Chevalier as the laid-back, country cousin of A-list resorts further north, such as Val d’Isère or Courchevel – a bit smaller and a bit less hi-tech, but also friendlier, more relaxed and with bags more Gallic character.

For skiers stuck on the intermediate plateau, British ski school New Generation can help. It’s run here by experienced instructor Gavin Crosby and his wife Mel, who offer group lessons on peak dates as well as private coaching all season. Book well in advance.

Cristal Lodge is a new chalet-style apartment building that opened in summer 2022 and is 300 metres from the ski lifts of Chantemerle village. The residence is next to the hotel with the same name, which has a wellness area and a bar serving ‘Savoyarde tapas’. From £1,042 for a two-person studio, self catering, including Eurotunnel crossings, with Peak Retreats .

Les Arcs , La Plagne , Flaine and Méribel all have extensive blue and red runs that give a feeling of having gone somewhere each day, rather than repeating the same slopes.

Best for experts

Val d’isère.

The resort is spread along a high, remote valley and shares the giant ski area formerly known as Espace Killy with neighbouring Tignes . These days the ski area’s name reflects precisely what’s inside the tin: Val d’Isère-Tignes.

Val d’Isère’s village divides into a number of sectors, from the central hub at the base of the main Solaise and Bellevarde lifts to the quieter outposts of La Daille, Le Laisinant and Le Fornet. As in any major holiday destination in the Alps, the vast majority of visitors are intermediates, so it’s not essential to be an expert to enjoy good times here.

However, those who are will – particularly when investing in expert guiding to make the most of the challenging terrain, both on and off piste. Few world-class resorts have such variety. Progression Ski is a British-run school offering the full range of group and private ski and snowboard lessons.

The slopes of Bellevarde, reached by the Olympique jumbo gondola or two chairlifts from the centre, or from La Daille, rise up to 2908m. La Face, the steep and deeply challenging black run down to town, was the venue for the men’s downhill at the 1992 Albertville Olympics and the 2009 World Championships. The backside of Bellevarde is the starting point for the alternative OK downhill course and an enormous area of varied slopes that lead towards Tignes in one direction and back down to La Daille in the other.

The best accommodation in Val d’Isère includes a clutch of Canadian-inspired chalets situated a five-minute walk from both the village centre and the two main mountain access lifts. Ski Vertigo is a new travel-included tour operator. It’s a sister company to Ski Famille and the brainchild of a highly experienced team led by the original founder of Crystal and the former product manager of Ski Total.  From £959 in Chalet Alberta, which sleeps eight in three ensuite rooms and a bunk room, with Ski Vertigo.

Chamonix has some of the most demanding terrain in the Alps and Sainte Foy is a small resort with a giant off-piste area.

Best for reliable snow

With slopes going up to nearly 3,250m, Les Arcs’ altitude means the ski area is open from mid-December until just before the end of April. The highest of the four hamlets is Arc 2000, but equally snow-reliable Arc 1950 – just below 2000 at 1,950m – is the most attractive place to stay. The most recently built of Les Arcs’ four villages – it celebrates its 20th birthday this winter – it consists of modern Savoyard-style buildings.

The Varet glacier above Arc 2000 is the highest point in the Paradiski ski area that Les Arcs shares with La Plagne . Both resorts are made up of satellites set at varying heights and access 425km of piste in total. They are linked by an impressive double-decker cable car across a gorge. From the high point of Aiguille Rouge at 3,226m above Les Arcs it’s possible to drop all the way down to the village of Villaroger in the valley.

What most people don’t know about is the growing number of excellent mountain eateries, in particular around  Arc 1950 and 2000. On the pistes, these include the Bulle Café Les Arcs, which serves an array of fresh seafood at non-exorbitant prices, and the sumptuous Chalets de l’Arc.

Of the residences in the charming and convenient Arc 1950 Village. The apartments here are more spacious than the French norm, well-furnished, and the reception is staffed 24/7. As well as being ski-in/ski-out, there’s a large indoor-outdoor pool, a hot tub, sauna and steam room. From £893 for a two-person suite, self-catering, travel not included, with Erna Low .

Val Thorens ,   Alpe d’Huez and Tignes are all high resorts that guarantee early- and late-season snow.

Best for charm

French resorts are usually known for their convenience rather than their charm, so attractive villages with large ski areas are notable in their rarity. Megève is special, with a medieval village centre , colourful horse-drawn sleighs, fabulous restaurants, designer boutiques, and excellent apres-ski.

There’s also a wide choice of restaurants on the mountain. The resort’s halcyon days were in the 1950s and 1960s when celebrities such as Sasha Distel, Brigitte Bardot, Charles Aznavour, and Johnny Hallyday turned it into the hub of a St Tropez on snow.

Megève is part of a large ski area that includes the spa town of St-Gervais as well as the villages of La Giettaz and St-Nicolas-de-Veroce. The Evasion Mont Blanc lift pass also includes 120km of pistes in nearby Les Contamines, giving an impressive total of 445km. The disadvantage is its altitude – Megève stands at just 1,113m – very low compared with other major French resorts and snow cover can be limited. It’s best skied in mid-season.

Four-star Hotel Mont Blanc in the centre of the resort used to be the favourite watering hole of avant garde poet and novelist Jean Cocteau and in the 1950s it was a rendez-vous for famous artists. It houses one of Megève’s landmark restaurants, Les Enfants Terribles. From £1,895, B&B, with Ski Solutions.

Vaujany is a cute little village and is linked into the huge Alpe d’Huez area. Little-known Aussois in the Maurienne Valley is rural France at its simplest and most delightful.

Best for partying

There’s no denying that the thousands of international visitors who make the journey each winter to this the geographical centre of the giant Trois Valleés ski area know how to party in style – Méribel is its beating heart.

A branch of the French après experience, La Folie Douce, at the mid-station of the main Saulire gondola, gets loud at 3pm with a DJ and table-top dancing. The clientele tend to migrate after 5pm to the Rond Point, better known as The Ronny, just above the main village and the must-visit après venue. It has live bands and a fantastic atmosphere. On a good night, dedicated party animals could be crowd surfing by 6pm.

Alternatively, Méribel institution Jack’s Bar offers up comedy and live bands every evening, while Barometer has a pleasant English pub atmosphere. Later on, La Taverne and Le Pub are good warm-up spots for the main clubbing action even later at O’Sullivan’s or Les Saint Pères.

Méribel’s local slopes are extensive and mainly intermediate, and give easy access to the rest of the Trois Vallées ski area. The resort has an unrivalled selection of good-quality chalets, although wickedly high prices have led to a sharp fall in the overall visitor numbers in recent years.

Hotel l’Eterlou is a cosy hotel built in chalet style in the centre of Méribel, 60 metres from the Chaudanne lifts, with the in-house La Grange restaurant, and an outdoor heated swimming-pool. From £1,769, with Inghams .

In the country that gave après ski its name there is remarkably little of it. Les Deux Alpes and Chamonix are livelier than most resorts and do their best to address the lack of partying with a more extensive range of bars and late-night entertainment.

Best for families

With its village-based nursery slopes, pedestrian-friendly centre and road train shuttle between the main slopes and separate Mont Chéry ski area, this village in the giant Portes du Soleil ski area makes an ideal base for families. The region has oodles of groomed runs – 600km of them to be exact – linked by 208 lifts.

There’s a huge choice of accommodation, including family-friendly chalets with childcare, and Les Gets itself is a pleasing mixture of old Savoyard chalets and more modern wood-and-stone buildings constructed in keeping with their Alpine surroundings. Child-friendly activities in the village include skating, farm tours and tenpin bowling. There’s also a cinema and the Musique Méchanique Museum, with around 750 exhibits including music boxes, clocks and self-playing pianos.

Les Gets is set at a modest 1,172m altitude, which means snow cover is not necessarily reliable at village level throughout the season. It’s best to visit in February and March. However, there are more nursery slopes up the mountain at Chavannes, and the Grand Cry fun park is also here.

Les Gets shares a 120km local ski area with Morzine, and the British snow-sports schools BASS, Les Gets Snowsports and Mint Snowboarding operate here. Kindergartens include Les Fripouilles, which caters for children from six months to four years.

One of the best chalets in Les Gets, Chalet Cocon des Neiges which opened in 2019, overlooks the village and is two minutes’ walk from the nearest lift. It sleeps 15 in four family suites and a double room. From £679, with Ski Famille . Full childcare is available.

La Tania in the Trois Vallées is car-free, although families with little ones need to be wary of people speeding down the main drag towards the gondola. Vaujany is an unspoilt village linking into the Alpe d’Huez ski area with no through traffic and a good crèche.

Best for terrain parks

This purpose-built resort above Morzine in the massive French/Swiss Portes du Soleil area was largely the brainchild of French racer Jean Vuarnet, better known for his sunglasses than for his gold medal at the Squaw Valley Olympics in 1960. Accommodation is mainly ski-in ski-out apartments, many of which have been renovated in recent years. Avoriaz has a quirky charm and a varied array of terrain parks – five plus a superpipe.

Snowboarding made its European debut in Avoriaz in the late 1980s and the resort built the first halfpipe in Europe in 1993. Facilities have come a long way since then. Park novices can learn first turns at the Chapelle park, which has kicker lines from green to red along with boxes and rails, before progressing to the pro lines and airbag in the Arare park.

In the Stash park all features are made from wood and there are three lines of varying difficulty snaking through the forest. Avoriaz also has two parks especially for kids, Lil’Stash, and the Burton Kids Parkway.

The Portes du Soleil’s variety of slopes suits everyone, from complete beginners to veteran powderhounds, and Avoriaz makes a good base for easy access to all of it. High and rocky, the resort is a great destination in a good snow year, much less so when the snow is thin on the lower slopes.

Ski-in/ski-out and essentially quirky, Hotel Des Dromonts is a funky throwback to the days of Deneuve and Vadim with plenty of retro chic and two good restaurants to choose from – it’s one of the best hotels in Avoriaz. The owner of the sports shop opposite once skied down the not-quite-vertical side of the hotel and lived to tell the tale. From £1,449, with Inghams .

The Portes du Soleil has a total of 30 parks including boardercross and ski cross. Tignes and La Plagne also both have large parks with extensive features.

Best for value

Ax-les-thermes.

The attractive old town of Ax-les-Thermes, in the Ariège area of the Pyrenees, is a great choice for a value holiday since it’s not a mainstream or fashionable ski resort of the Alps. It is only 90 minutes’ drive from Toulouse airport and so it’s convenient for a long weekend or mid-week break.

The town lies at just 720m from where a gondola to 1,400m accesses the start of the ski area, which is divided into three connected sectors. Bonascre is home to a host of easy green beginner slopes and some long flattering blues. Saquet, accessed by gondola or a six-person chairlift, goes up to a respectable 2,350m and has great red and black runs beneath the Tute and Ours chairs. On fresh powder days there is easily accessible off piste through the trees.

Further over lies the Domaine des Campels sector, reached by the long sweeping blue Savis piste or a choice of much steeper and more demanding reds and blacks.

In terms of size, the slopes here are no match for the giant connected areas of the Alps, but there’s plenty to keep beginners and intermediates happy for a week, and in good snow conditions the freeriding will entertain the more advanced. There is also an extensive cross-country ski area at Chioula, a short bus-ride away.

The town is famous for its thermal baths, les Bains de Couloubret, with 60 hot springs. Visitors can soak in the thermal spa waters here for  €20 for two hours, or use the free foot spa. On-slope eating is a lot cheaper than in the Alps and, with the proximity to the frontier, there’s a big Spanish influence in the tapas bars lining the attractive streets. The two ski schools here are the ESF and ESI.

Three-star Les Trois Domaines apartments are right next to the gondola leading up to the ski area. From €499 for a self-catering studio, travel not included, with Pierre et Vacances .

St-Lary, also in the Pyrenees, is a sensibly-priced alternative. Puy St Vincent in the Southern Alps is loved by French families who count their euros carefully.

Best for weekends

Close to Lake Annécy and within an easy hour’s drive of Geneva airport, La Clusaz has well-groomed intermediate and advanced slopes that are all too often overlooked by skiers and snowboarders driving past on their way towards the Trois Vallées and the other famous Tarentaise resorts.

La Clusaz and smaller Manigod share 132km of groomed runs; 10 minutes away by free shuttle bus are those of Le Grand Bornand and its lift-linked satellite village, St Jean de Sixt. All four are covered by the same Aravis lift pass and comprise a total 212km of terrain.

Most of the slopes are intermediate, but the La Balme area of La Clusaz offers long runs and considerable challenges. Le Grand Bornand has a dedicated freeride area at the back of Mont Lachat de Châtillon that is neither patrolled nor groomed, but is avalanche protected. It is sufficiently extensive and challenging to satisfy even the most demanding visitor. A 200m covered magic carpet lift makes the Rosay plateau area, in Le Grand Bornand, very accessible for beginners.

As well as making La Clusaz an ideal spot for the weekend, airport convenience explains in part why so many Britons have bought chalets and apartments here. However, their presence is muted – these resorts are mainly frequented by the French, and unlike in some of the big name resorts, holidaying here feels like you’re in France. La Clusaz has a life beyond snow and is a thriving year-round community. Le Grand Bornand is the home of Reblochon cheese, an inescapable inclusion in all its varied forms, from fondue to raclette, on every restaurant menu in the region.

The three-star Hotel Alpen Roc is in the centre of La Clusaz, 150m from the lifts, with panoramic views from the bar/lounge area. From £1,179, self-drive, ferry included, with Sno .

Morzine and Megève are both within a 90-minute drive of Geneva Airport.

Unless stated otherwise, package prices are per person, based on two sharing a double or twin room, half-board, for seven nights, including flights and transfers.
