Based on my recent experiences, I embarked on two cruises to the Bahamas in January this year. Taking weather, price and crowds into consideration, I'm going with November as the best time to cruise to the Bahamas. Here's how I came to that conclusion, though you might decide another month is the best time for you to sail away to the islands.

The best time based on weather

Though I found several blogs promoting January as the best month to cruise to the Bahamas, I personally have experienced chilly weather in the Bahamas in both December and January. Remember, the Bahamas are located in the Atlantic Ocean, not the Caribbean. They're not truly tropical islands, and most are at more northern latitudes than Key West. Winter temperatures aren't always balmy.

I've had two stops at private islands canceled due to strong winds and temperatures in the 50s and 60s. One ship I was on made an alternate stop at Freeport, which was still chilly, but at least it could dock. It was a wasted day for those hoping to enjoy water sports or the beach. Only the shoppers weren't deterred by the chill in the air.

Don't get me wrong, January is usually a wonderful time to cruise to the Bahamas, as long as you are prepared for the relatively rare cold front that blows that far south.

The months some cruisers tell you to avoid cruising to the Bahamas are during the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, which is August to October. But here's the thing about that – the cruise line isn't going to put you or their ship in harm's way.

Might they cancel your cruise or switch up your itinerary? Sure. But my own experience has been that outside of relatively rare hurricanes and tropical storms, the late summer and early fall months often bring calmer seas. In fact, the calmest seas I have experienced anywhere in the world were on a September cruise to the Bahamas, on which we enjoyed glassy calm waters the entire trip.

The best month to cruise the Bahamas, weather-wise, depends on your travel style. Are you stressed by the possibility of cancellations due to hurricanes or by port changes from unexpected cold fronts? Skip January, December, August, September — and maybe even October.

Are you only going on the cruise for water sports like diving, snorkeling or boating? Then rule out December and January.

Do you avoid high heat and humidity as if it were a plague? Then don't book a cruise to the Bahamas in July, August or September.

The months we haven't mentioned are March, April, May, June and November. If weather is your biggest concern, those are the best months for you to hop on a Bahamas cruise.

The best time based on prices and crowds

It's no secret that cruises to the Bahamas can be cheap — but they are not always so. Here are the averages we found for price per person per night across the mainstream cruise lines along with what kind of crowd you can expect to find on board. Exceptions to these averages are always possible, especially on odd-length cruises like four- and five-night sailings.

The autumn months can be an ideal time to cruise the Bahamas if you're looking for cheaper fares and fewer crowds – especially if you're not bothered by the increased hurricane risk. (September 10 is the official peak of hurricane season.)

October tends to be the lowest-priced month to cruise to the Bahamas, with inside cabins averaging around $60 per person, per night. Ocean-view cabins are yours for an average of $75 per night, while balcony cabins are a bit higher, at around $85 per person per night. Even suites are a good deal. October sailings do not usually include very many children or college-age partiers, but the lower fares do attract working folks looking to let off steam, especially on three-night sailings.

September runs a close second to October, with fares averaging a few dollars higher per night. Expect a similar crowd. The shorter the cruise, the louder the party tends to get.

November before the holidays is perhaps the ideal time to cruise. We found the suites in early to mid-November average only $167 per night, with other categories running just slightly more than hurricane season rates. You can expect few children on board other than home-schoolers and preschoolers. With the holidays right around the corner, the ships often will be a bit emptier than usual, making for a quiet cruise.

Early December cruises cost only slightly more than November. If you love holiday decor (both on board and in the islands) and dressing up in holiday clothes, you can enjoy a relatively quiet cruise early in December. The later it gets, the more the crowd swells.

The absolute most expensive cruises to the Bahamas we found were during the week between Christmas and New Year's, when you can expect to pay upward of $150 per person per night for an inside cabin, $165 for ocean-view cabins, $180 and up per night for balconies, and $400 and up per night for suites. This is max capacity time onboard. The best news for those looking for a floating holiday party is that you will find your people cruising this week.

January and February cruises to the Bahamas are almost always bargains, with inside cabins running around $75 per night, ocean-view cabins are a mere $85 per night, and balconies and suites averaging around $100 and $175 respectively. These are months between the holiday parties and spring break, so you can usually sit back and enjoy smaller, quieter crowds.

In March, April and May, you'll have to shop around for deals or hope for a last-minute special, but you can find lower prices if you look. March cruises will always include spring breakers of all ages, so expect children on board, just not as many as in summer.

You also might find yourself sharing a ship with a spring break party cruise charter in March. Even if your ship is quiet, the ports you visit might be filled with hordes of vacationing college kids, so be prepared for a lively crowd.

June, July and August cruise rates average around $90 per night for inside cabins, $100 per night for ocean-views, $120 and up for balcony cabins and $225 per night and up for suites. Ships will be loaded with families. Expect children of all ages and maxed-out onboard kids clubs. Fares typically start to fall toward the end of August when schools start back up and hurricane season kicks into gear.

The big, mainstream cruise lines sail to the Bahamas year-round, so whichever season or month suits your schedule, you'll find plenty of options departing from multiple ports. (We found eight ports offering Bahamas cruises, including three in Florida, plus Baltimore; New York City; Bayonne, New Jersey; Charleston, South Carolina; and Galveston, Texas.) Even better news is that the abundance of options means an abundance of deals year-round.

However, there are some times that are better than others, depending upon your own individual requirements and priorities.

Let’s look at each of the factors that will influence your choice of which are the best months to cruise to the Bahamas.

When is the Best Weather in the Bahamas?

A huge part of the appeal of a cruise to the Bahamas is that the weather is consistently great for most of the year.

Average temperatures in the Bahamas range from 72 degrees in January to 84 in August.

When you decide to cruise, if your decision is based largely on the weather, will depend on your own personal weather preferences.

If you don’t want to be in the hottest and rainiest season then avoid the summer months, particularly August. The wettest month in the Bahamas is August, which average rainfall is 6.25 inches.

When you consider that the average rainfall for the whole year is 30.5 inches, you can see just how hot and rainy August is compared to the rest of the year.

If you like the higher temperatures avoid December to February when the average temperatures are lower. The coldest month is January, with an average temperature of 72 degrees.

This is particularly true if you are going to spend time in the ocean. The water temperature can vary quite a bit between the summer and winter months, so if you know that you are definitely going to spend some time with a water-based excursion you might want to avoid the winter.

For example, if we look at the weather on Disney’s Private Island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, we can see that the water temperature ranges from an average of 73 degrees in January and February to an average of 81 and 82 degrees from May to October.

This 10-degree range makes a huge difference.

One thing that you really must be careful of is whatever time of year, be very vigilant and use and reapply  Reef Friendly Sunscreen  frequently.

Sunburn is really not the memory that you want of your time in The Bahamas. It can happen really quickly so always make sure you keep reapplying sunscreen for yourself and your children.

If the weather is your priority and you are picking the best time to take a cruise to the Bahamas then the months of March to June are likely to be the ones you should concentrate on.

November is also a good month to consider for a cruise to the Bahamas. Temperatures are still an average of 75 degrees and the water temperature is an average of 79 degrees.

Hurricane season in the Bahamas officially starts on June 1 and ends on 30 November each year.

The peak times for hurricanes in this region are August, September, and October.

Understandably people can be nervous about booking a cruise during hurricane season.

However, cruise lines always have passenger safety as their highest priority. And cruise ships have the technology to be able to sail away from them.

The chances of you being affected by a hurricane on your Bahamian cruise are extremely low. The Captain of the ship will most likely be able to sail well away from the storm.

You’ll love the fresh trade winds that give the islands an agreeable climate all year round. The weather can be compared to Miami , Florida, which means you’ll see mostly sunny days with some clouds. When the rains come, you’ll see squalls or thunderstorms that clear quickly.

From December through February, temperatures range from high 70s during the day to lows in the mid 60s at night. March starts a slight warm up, and the months of April to November bring high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s with nighttime temperatures in the low to mid 70s.

Half Moon Cay

When you arrive at Little San Salvador Island, Half Moon Cay beaches will call to you. It’s a private island vacation paradise. You can go horseback riding on the pristine sand beaches. If you’d prefer to be in the water, go snorkeling or head for Stingray Cove where you can see stingrays up close and personal. Or, get close to nature when you join an island naturalist on a kayak adventure. Best Times to Visit The Bahamas for Good Weather

One of the biggest draws of The Bahamas is that the islands are blessed with good weather year-round thanks to warm trade winds and mild temperatures. Winter lows linger around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while summer temperatures range from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit — hot, but not unbearable due to an ever-present sea breeze.

Of course, all that lush tropical vegetation is partially because of the long rainy season. You’ll encounter the heaviest rains in August during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which stretches from June 1 to November 30. However, showers are often light and quick, so they shouldn’t dampen your plans.

During these months, there’s always the potential of a hurricane popping up, and The Bahamas has been hard-hit in past years. Still, you’ll get at least a few days’ notice if there’s an imminent threat. You don’t need to avoid the area during hurricane season; just be aware that there’s always the possibility of a storm forming at this time of year. The best time to visit the Bahamas is from mid-April to early July, after the Spring Breakers have flown north and before hurricane season arrives in early August. Though the Bahamas are a reliably popular winter destination, its offseason charms have been largely overlooked: bookings are less expensive, beaches are less crowded, and there’s more of an opportunity to engage with the local culture via monthly festivals and weekly regattas.

Weather in the Bahamas

The Bahamas is known for having sunshine most days of the year, though that doesn’t mean the summer months become unbearably sweltering. Thanks to the trade winds that sweep through the island chain, you’d be surprised to discover it’s breezier on a July afternoon in the Bahamas than an early June morning in New York City. It rains more regularly in May and June, though the rainfall is relatively mild (and usually welcome: known in the Caribbean as “liquid sunshine.”)   Hurricane season is at its peak in August and September, though they’re less of a threat in the Bahamas than they are on the East Coast of the U.S. If you’re a worrier, remember to purchase your travel insurance beforehand, as you can’t claim retroactively.

Peak Tourist Season in the Bahamas

Unlike the tropical climate, which remains relatively temperate year-round, the cost of travel in the Bahamas spikes during the wintertime, with hotels charging rates up to 50 percent higher than in the summer months. The season begins in mid-December and continues until mid-April, ending just after Spring Break. Late spring and early summer are more economical for travelers, as the cost of travel drops in the off-season — for outer islands, in particular.

Key Holidays & Festivals in the Bahamas

Of all the parades and festivals that occur on a near-weekly basis throughout the Bahamas, the Junkanoo is the undisputed favorite. The energy and joy of the vibrant street parade, with its intricate masks and creative costumes, is reminiscent of Mardi Gras or Carnival, though its heritage is distinctly Bahamian. The festival’s name derives from the name "John Canoe," an African chief who, even after being forced into slavery in the West Indies, never stopped fighting for his right, and the right of his people, to dance, sing, and have a good time. The celebration continues today, as the Junkanoo is now the National Festival of the Bahamas.

Other key holidays, such as Emancipation Day and Independence Week, occur in the summertime, so there’s never an off-season for celebrating Bahamian culture. But even if you can’t attend any of these holidays, there are other cultural activities you can partake in year-round, particularly in the capital of Nassau . Weekend cricket matches (the national sport) take place from March to November, while bird walks are held on the first Saturday of each month from September to May. Additionally, a Tea Party is thrown by the Ministry of Tourism at the Governor’s House on the last Friday of every month. The Tea Party is not to be missed, offering a unique chance to experience Bahamian culture and cuisine.

The New Year’s Day Junkanoo Parade is the most highly-anticipated event of the year, kicking off at 2 a.m. on the first day of the year. Since the winter holidays aren’t just peak season for Junkanoos, but for tourists as well, visitors should book accommodations, and look into flight deals, well in advance of their arrival. January is peak season, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a hotel room available on January 1 without having booked several months in advance.

Events to check out:

• The New Year’s Day Junkanoo Parade takes place on many of the Bahamian islands (including Abaco and Grand Bahama), though the largest celebration occurs in Nassau.
• For those still looking for extra cardio after all that dancing, there’s also the Bahamas Marathon , one of the world’s most beautiful races.
• The Bahamas International Film Festival takes place in Nassau.

The weather in the first two months of the year is very dry, with temperatures staying in the mid-60s to high 70s Fahrenheit. This month is in the heart of peak season, and Valentine’s Day is also especially popular for weekend travelers to the islands.

• The Mid-Winter Wahoo fishing competition will take place on Bimini (the old stomping grounds of Hemingway).
• The Farmer’s Cay Festival is a boat festival that will take place on the Exuma Islands.

The temperature starts rising in March, reaching the high 80s, and the rain starts pouring a little more regularly, marking the end of the dry season. This is still peak season for travel, as many hotels will be fully booked through the month, and airfare will potentially double in price.

• Check out the Bacardi Rum Billfish Tournament, for fishing, drinking, and boating in Freeport.

July is a great time to visit, not only for the warm weather and the slashed prices, but for two key events: the Junkanoo Summer Festival, and Independence Week.

• Independence Week , which begins every summer on July 10, the date in 1973 when the Bahamas became an independent nation after 325 years of British rule.
• Reach out to the tourism bureau if you’re interested in participating in the Junkanoo Summer Festival, as there are smaller Junkanoos where visitors can dress up as well.

August is slightly warmer and rainier, but the temperature is usually hovering around the low 80s F—a benefit of the country’s northwest Caribbean location. The pace is slower, the tourists have left, and there’s a more laid back, island-style vibe to the Bahamas.

• Emancipation Day celebrates the 1834 emancipation of all the slaves in British colonies. There’s a Junkanoo Rush-out (dance troupes), beach parties and regattas. Historic slave villages in New Providence have their own distinct festivities. 

The rainy season continues, though an afternoon rain-shower or thunderstorm passes by quickly, potentially followed by a rainbow. The prices are lower in September as well, so it’s a good time to book a villa, or treat yourself to an extravagance you’d normally skip.

• The International Coastal Cleanup takes place on the third Saturday in September in Grand Bahama.

• McLean’s Town Conch Cracking Festival on Grand Bahama is exactly as it sounds — and just as fun, too.
• National Heroes Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Formerly "Columbus Day," it now honors Bahamian civic heroes instead.

November is the last calm before the storm of holiday vacationers, and is also a perfect time of year to claim as your own in the islands. If you’ve wanted to celebrate a holiday in the tropics, but Christmas was always too difficult to coordinate, consider Thanksgiving. • The Annual Conchman Triathlon for the sport-enthusiasts will takes place in early November on Grand Bahama.

With an average of 300 days of sun each year, odds are in your favor that even if you travel during the off-season, most, if not all, of your days will be hot and sunny. If you don’t enjoy high humidity, visit during the off-season, but if you enjoy the heat, travel June thru September.

One thing you must remember when looking at the average daily or monthly temperatures in the Bahamas is the peak daytime humidity can make the weather feel 10 or 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature.

While everyone who travels to the Bahamas is in search of tropical weather, you want to plan your vacation during the time of year that offers the temperatures you find most appealing.

What to Pack for a Bahamas Cruise

While there are basic staples you should pack, regardless of the month you are traveling to the Bahamas, you may be wondering what to wear during your specific month of travel.

Year-round staples include a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, flip-flops or sandals, walking shoes, swimsuits (at least 2), cover-up shorts, tank tops, t-shirt, and sundresses. Also, bring your own backpack or beach bag for toiletries, water, sunscreen, and a change of shoes and clothes (especially while on excursions).

Your bag can also reduce trips back to your cabin while onboard, and provides you with ample room to carry souvenirs. The ship provides beach blankets, but you can bring one of your own if you wish.

Cruise Ship Attire

Most cruise ships require semi-formal/business casual attire when dining in the main dining room, where you will have an assigned dining table and dining time. If you make reservations in the formal dining room, formal or black tie attire is required. Feel free to repeat your semi-formal/formal dinner attire.

Remember, you don’t have to dress up for dinner—and can instead order room service or eat at one of the many casual dining spots, where dress code is a non-issue.

Attire will also vary, depending on your onboard activities and port excursions. Even if you haven’t selected all of your excursions before you arrive, consider what you will do beforehand, so that you can pack accordingly. For example, sandals are not sufficient for a day hike.

Bonus Packing Tip

When you board the ship, you can only bring a small handheld carry-on with you, and your larger luggage will be delivered to your room. So you can get right into vacation-mode (after the required cruise safety drill), pack your essentials in your carry-on. This includes your basic toiletries, prescription medications, swimsuit, and in case your luggage takes a while to arrive, maybe even your dinner clothing.

On the first day of the cruise, the dinner attire is often lax, because luggage can take several hours before being delivered to all cabins.

With warm weather that never fades and an abundance of unique islands to explore, this Caribbean nation located just a short flight from the east coast of the US is a magnet for repeat visitors and last-minute bookers alike. But what is the best time of the year to visit the Bahamas? We can help you choose the right time for your vacation style.

High season, from mid-December to April, has the best weather

Weather-wise, winter is the best time to visit the Bahamas, and hotel rates reflect that. Comfortable daytime temperatures in the 70–80ºFs make the Bahamas a booming winter destination for North Americans fleeing snow, ice and morose conditions on the mainland.

Winter in the Bahamas also brings in bucket list marine species like hammerhead and tiger sharks that makes the island nation doubly attractive to American and Canadian divers looking for a cure for cabin fever. Book your visit several months in advance during peak season.

Shoulder season, from mid-April to June, is the best time to party

If you’re looking for a party, shoulder season is the best time to pull up to a beachside bar and mingle. Flocks of spring breakers descend on the Bahamas from stateside colleges each year in early spring. You’ll even find a few family vacations sprinkled in amongst the throngs, especially at popular all-inclusive retreats.

Those seeking a more secluded escape can still take advantage of shoulder season deals during May and June, when higher temperatures and a greater chance of rain start to slow the steady stream of tourists that began during the winter months. Hotel discounts can plunge below 20% off during shoulder season.

Low season, August to November, is best for budget travelers

Fall is the cheapest time to visit the Bahamas. Flights, hotel and resort rates during low season can stretch your budget farther, and you’ll likely still find plenty of beach days in between rain showers.

While some might consider an increase in humidity and rain chances during low season to be a determent, there really isn’t a “worst time” to visit the Bahamas. In fact, low season offers budget-conscious travelers some incredible reasons to bring a rain jacket – hotel rates can dip below 50% of their peak highs. This is also the best time to pick up a last-minute deal to the Bahamas.

Hurricane season is June to November 

Hurricane season in the Bahamas starts in June and runs through November. While hurricanes are certainly a factor to be aware of, they may not be as frequent as you think. Generally, the Bahamas receives fewer hurricanes than the US mainland each year and has advanced warning of any impending danger.

January brings the crowds and parties 

High season is in full swing during January. The month kicks off with round two of the Junkanoo Winter Festival – a Bahamian Mardi Gras-style event – which begins on Christmas and runs through New Year’s Day. High temperatures in the low 70ºFs make for comfortable weather to enjoy the festivities. Key events: Junkanoo Winter Festival, New Year’s Day Sailing Regatta, Majority Rule Day, Annual Bahamas Wahoo Championships.

February is a good time for diving

February brings an annual migration of great hammerhead sharks to Bimini, drawing divers from around the world to the warm waters midway between Miami , Grand Bahama and Andros. Elsewhere, continuing prime weather keeps the peak season influx of travelers bustling through the country’s airports and resort lobbies. Key events: Farmer’s Cay Festival, Rum Cay Day Festival.

Spring breakers arrive in March, and the party begins again

Snowbirds transition to spring breakers in March. March visitors will likely need to book accommodations in advance, though they might begin to find open rooms and deals towards the end of the month. Party people, this is your time to shine. If you’re not into the party crowd, consider waiting a few weeks. Key events: Bahamas Music & Heritage Festival, Bacardi Billfish Tournament.

Some businesses may be closed for the Easter holidays in April

Shoulder season begins in earnest in April. Grand Bahama sees the largest influx of spring breakers, while more secluded islands like Cat Island, Long Island and Eleuthera offer a break from the largest crowds. Be aware that Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are national holidays in the Bahamas, and many businesses may be closed. Key events: Bahamas Family Island Regata, Bahamas Billfish Championship.

May is good for budget travel

Occupancy rates begin to drop in May as the final holdovers from spring and winter make their way out. While average high temperatures in May creep towards the mid-80ºFs, this sweet spot after spring break but before hurricane season offers an underrated opportunity for travelers who aren’t ready for the full heat of summer but are looking for a hotel discount. Key events: Carnival, Long Island Regatta.

Expect some rain if you visit in June

Pick a June day in the Bahamas, and there’s a fair chance you’ll see at least some rain and at least partial cloud cover. Visitors in June have a 30% chance of rain and a 65% chance of cloudy conditions; however, warm water and warm temperatures combine with lower prices to make June a viable travel option for many. Key events: Pineapple Festival, Bahamas Summer Boating Flotilla.

July means an increase in temperatures and thunderstorms

July in the Bahamas is properly hot. Daily high temperatures climb into the 90ºFs, coinciding with peak rainfall accumulations for the year. Though hurricanes are rare, the islands are home to regular tropical thunderstorms that you should be prepared for. Typically, storms pass within a few hours, leaving plenty of time for activities. Bring a light rain jacket. Key events: Junkanoo Summer Festival, Independence Week.

August is peak hurricane season

August and September are the most active months for hurricanes in the Bahamas. Odds are you’ll be OK, but be aware that August is still the rainy season, even when no hurricanes are in the Atlantic. The tradeoff for playing roulette with the weather? You could see short lines at the dive shop and fewer fellow visitors at the beach. Key events: Cat Island Regatta, Emancipation Day.

September is the month with the least sunshine

Historically the most turbulent month for Bahamian weather, September travelers should keep a close eye on the forecast. While you have a good chance of catching a sunny day in the Bahamas almost any time of year, September can be particularly dicey. Key events: All Abaco Sailing Regatta.

Low season deals for diving are great in October

Tiger sharks migrate to Grand Bahama’s Tiger Beach in October and stay through December. Though October is typically the rainiest month of the year, breaks in the weather offer excellent opportunities for budget-minded divers who can still take advantage of low season deals. Key events: International Culture Wine & Food Festival, Discovery Day, North Eleuthera Sailing Regatta, Great Bahamas Seafood and Heritage Festival.

It's less wet and humid in November

November offers an early jump on peak season as humidity levels and daily chances of rainfall drop. Outfitters will be gearing up for high season, which can play into your hands. Some peak season businesses may still be closed, but others may offer up an early bird discount. Key events: Guy Fawkes Day, One Bahamas Music & Heritage Festival.

Peak season begins in December

Peak season begins in the Bahamas. Airports, hotels and restaurants all start to swell at the seams in the middle of the month. Visitors who choose to spend the holiday season in the Bahamas are rewarded with the start of the Junkanoo Festival, a world-class celebration of culture. Key events: Junkanoo Winter Festival, Bahamas International Film Festival.

Caribbean Weather in August: Best Islands to Visit

Cruise and resort tourism starts to decline in response to the riskier weather. Still, August is part of summer, and summer remains a popular time to visit the Caribbean.

Heavier rainfall begins to show up in the Caribbean in August as the annual hurricane season gets more active.

On average, the Bahamas are especially hard hit. Other destinations that often get drenched include Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique as well as Belize and Costa Rica. Western Caribbean cruise ports such as Cozumel and Grand Cayman get more rain than usual.

The higher risk of rain doesn’t stop people from taking western Caribbean cruises or visiting destination resorts. Some travelers get lucky and don’t experience any rain at all. But the odds of rain do go up.

Caribbean weather in August historically averages three major storms with two that become hurricanes. The chart below shows figures from the Caribbean meteorological services that indicate August weather averages over various 30-year periods for 17 major Caribbean destinations.

The figures are averages and may vary from one year to the next. But they show trends that help travel planners know what kind of weather to expect and whether to go in June or July instead.

Best Caribbean Islands in August

The best Caribbean islands to visit in August include Aruba - Curacao - Jamaica (Montego Bay), St. Maarten - Antigua and St. Thomas . They all average four inches of rain or less. Aruba and Curacao average about one inch. They have the lowest risk of rain in the entire Caribbean.

Caribbean islands to avoid in August include the Bahamas, Barbados, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico and St. Lucia. They all average at least five to six inches of rain historically and sometimes as much as 10 inches. The Central American countries of Belize, Costa Rica and Panama also have high levels of rain.

The longer list of Caribbean destinations to avoid is the result of the Caribbean hurricane season.

Caribbean Rain in August

Anyone wanting the lowest risk of rain will have an easy choice. Aruba and Curacao historically average about one inch of rain each August.

The ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao lie off the coast of Venezuela and just on the edge of the Caribbean hurricane belt. They are the most arid islands in the region all year and see only slight increases of rain during the hurricane season.

But August is the end of their normal dry season. On average, their rainfall increases from about one to two inches each month during most of the year to about three inches in September, October and November, according to Netherland Antilles Meteorology.

Several other destinations average about four inches of rain in August and also may have lower risk. They include Antigua, Cancun, Montego Bay, Punta Cana and St. Maarten.

Islands with a higher than normal risk of rain include Bahamas, Dominica and Martinique. Total rainfall in the Bahamas jumps by 50 percent versus July.

The popular Central American destinations of Belize and Costa Rica, which are famous for their rainforests, usually see high levels of rain as well.

Caribbean Temperatures in August

Staying warm in the Caribbean isn’t a problem in August. Places such as Cancun, Cayman Islands, Cozumel, Aruba and Curacao all see average high temperatures exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit on many days.

Anyone who has visited those locations in the summer know that the heat can be unbearable at times, especially inland or walking on beach sand in the middle of the afternoon. Aruba and Curacao in particular have arid interiors with little to no shade. Visitors should try to do any shore excursions on land in the mornings when temperatures are lower.

Locations with more moderate temperatures include Antigua, St. Lucia and Dominican Republic.

Cruise Weather in August

Higher rainfall and hot temperatures make western Caribbean cruises less appealing in August for Cancun, Cozumel, Grand Cayman and the Central American countries.

Eastern cruises are only slightly better, but travelers should avoid the Bahamas because of much higher than normal rainfall. San Juan and St. Lucia also have wet months.

Southern Caribbean weather makes cruises there a better choice, especially for ones that visit the dry islands of Aruba and Curacao.

Anyone who wants to take a Caribbean cruise during the summer and has some flexibility with their schedules may want to cruise during July and especially during June. The average rainfall is lower for most destinations.

But at least August is better than September. Historically, September is the worst month of the year for rain, storms and hurricanes in the Caribbean.

Why we wish you were here

Because Grandeur’s about as close as you’re going to feel you’ve boarded a private yacht on a commercial cruise ship.

Not that boarding here is particularly stressful, but there are chilled flutes of Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top Brut waiting at the end of the gangway from everything you left behind at PortMiami. There’s another bottle of Monopole in an ice bucket in your suite, too, in the unlikely event you feel any stress getting there.

The 332-square-foot Concierge Suite feels spacious, with a walk-in closet and good separation between the cabin door and the living areas. A valet brings the luggage and sets it on a welcome blanket across the king-sized bed. The 83-square-foot balcony is bigger than some cabins – possibly homes –  I’ve personally occupied, and comes with a pair of 8.5 x 21 Pentax Papillo II binoculars, because you’re going to see some things from up here.

There’s a shower and tub in the marbled bathroom. Lavender bubble bath and jasmine shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body milk, all by L’Occitane. There’s a phone in there, too, in case you think of anything you may require from the steward. (He was out in the hall memorizing guest names the last time I saw him. He remembered mine. Even pronounced it correctly). Details you’d expect on a private yacht.

Everywhere throughout this 14-deck, 735-foot ship, there are such small, elegant touches that say big things. The tables spread with white linens in the stylish Compass Rose dining room on Deck 4 are set with Rosenthal Versace china designed exclusively for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The cozy loungers and Jacuzzis off the Serene Spa & Wellness Center on Deck 5 overlook the ship’s wake and, shhhhhh , hardly anyone knows about them.

Then there’s the haute cuisine and the name-dropping Louis VIII, Opus One, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellar labels around the ship. And the feeling you’ve checked into a boutique hotel at sea. Or a private yacht. One where the Caribbean or the Mediterranean or the Gulf of St. Lawrence comes to you.

Strawberry Sparkler

Ingredients

5 ozs. High-quality prosecco

¾ oz. Fragoli, a wild strawberry liqueur

1 Tbsp. Fresh strawberries, puréed

Sliced fresh strawberries (for garnish)

Sliced fresh lemon (for garnish)

An homage to Grandeur’s Italian shipyard roots, this simple cocktail is pretty and refreshing. Purée the fresh strawberries, strain the fiber from the liquid; add strawberry liquids and chilled prosecco in a champagne glass. Serve with a slice or two of strawberry and lemon.

“Do I want a big pop or small pop? [Crowd, answering, timidly: “uh, small pop?”] Small pop, right! Why do I want a small pop? [Crowd shifts silently, not sure.] Because chefs are cheap! We like to save money. So what we love to do is save as much champagne or prosecco as possible.”

What’s cooking

There are four specialty restaurants aboard Grandeur, and one cooking class that can teach you how to make your own memorable meal.

“What do you never want to do on vacation?” Chef John Stephano teases the 18 guests before his hour-long Culinary Arts Cooking Class. “The last thing you ever want to do is the dishes. Anybody who really struggles in their culinary skills today we’ll be sending down to the galleys to help us out.”

Nervous laughs around the cooking stations in the Culinary Arts Kitchen on Deck 11.

“No, not at all!” he says, laughing, before showing his class how to make Pasta al Limone and classic French crêpes with allspice berry ice cream.

Stephano comes from a big Irish-Italian family in Philadelphia, where there was always something cooking on the stove, he says. Since no open-flame gas burners are allowed on the ship, he’s had to adapt some of his grandmother’s recipes to the induction cooktops each member of his class gets to work with.

“You can’t use regular pots and pans on these stoves – they have to be magnetic,’’ he says. “I always hear from someone who likes cooking with induction so much here they want to get it at home, then find out they have to change all of their cooking utensils.”

For the pasta dish, students learn what mise en place means (literally, everything in place), whether to add the oil to the water or the pan, how to use a zester for the lemon, whether to rip or cut the basil and how to serve pasta (in a warm bowl warmed with the pasta water.) After about 20 minutes of the chef’s steady guidance, everyone’s pasta al limone looks ready for the cover of a food magazine.

“Who wants a picture with their pasta!?” Everyone does.

The crêpe instruction follows, including a two-handed, chef-secret dump and roll maneuver to get the batter to spread evenly on the pan.

“I want you to ease in, like you’re driving a race car,’’ he says, demonstrating. “No flipping crêpes here – try that at home if you like.”

Twenty minutes later, the crêpes also all look magazine-cover ready. (It may help that Strawberry Sparkler cocktails were served before class began).

“Nice job,’’ Stephano says, reviewing mine.

“Thanks, chef!” I say, not exactly ready to join the cast of The Bear but ridiculously impressed with myself.

Don’t miss, part I

Impossible to miss, really, because Grandeur’s Fabergé egg is among the first things you see (after the welcome champagne) when you board on Deck 5. Sarah Fabergé, great-grand daughter of Peter Fabergé, was aboard for the christening of the ship and unveiling of the 180 mm, diamond, pearl and emerald egg last December in Miami. If you must ask, “I can’t disclose the value – other than it was created especially for Regent,’’ a spokesperson says. “I will say it’s in the multi millions.” And worth even more to lend the impression you’ve stepped onto someone’s private yacht. Someone with deep pockets – and considerable taste in art.

Don’t miss part II

While some cruise lines are downsizing – even replacing ship libraries with crêpe stations ( ca alors !) – Grandeur’s library is lovingly, borderline reverently, tended. If libraries are making a last stand, this one’s an oceangoing Alamo – with eclectic out-of-nowhere titles ranging from “L’Âpre et splendide Espagne” by Camille Mauclair to “The Bazaars of Istanbul” by Isabel Bocking. Biography, history, fiction, large print, nautical transport, practical advice, reference, science & natural history, sports & leisure, travel & travel writing, visual arts and children’s books – all within easy-to-grab and sprawl on a nearby comfy couch or chair.

Not that there’s anything wrong with the live shows in the two-level Constellation Theater, featuring a demographically hep mix of hits from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s performed by an earnest troupe of singers and dancers. They’re fine after-dinner diversions. But “Key Largo” is playing on a loop on the big-screen TV in the cabin. And if you haven’t seen it, it’s one of Bogie and Bacall’s best. Just saying.

Regent Seven Seas Grandeur

Accommodating 744 guests, with 372 suites and 532 crew. Four specialty restaurants, including Compass Rose; Pacific Rim, an Asian-Fusion restaurant; Chartreuse, a French restaurant; Prime 7, a steakhouse. Casual eateries include Sette Mari, at the back of La Veranda dining area on Deck 11, which does breakfast and lunch in the morning/afternoon and Italian food at night; pool-grille cafe/buffet and Coffee Connection. The Grandeur is sailing the Mediterranean now through August.
