Travel season guide: when to visit our favourite destinations

seasonal tourist destinations

Travel. It’s all in the timing. If you’ve managed to narrow down your ideal destination from the endless possibilities on offer (and if you have, could you please tell us how you did it?), the next question is: when do you go? For some countries it’s easy. Just avoid the monsoon/endless night/sub-zero temperatures/tourist hoards. For other destinations, there really isn’t a bad time.

So how do you narrow it down? Enter our handy travel season guide. These are our favourite times to visit some of our favourite destinations. Good weather, cool local festivals or a blissful lack of crowds: you’ll find them all in the suggestions below.

JAPAN – April

Travel-season-guide,-Japan-blossom---Unsplash

Why April:  Cherry Blossom season, it is the most popular and busiest time to travel to Japan but if you can stand the crowds the beauty of the blossoms trees are well worth it. Even if you’re not big on nature, this is something you’ve got to see. Hanami (花見?, lit. “flower viewing”) is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. Japan is a beautiful country regardless, but during cherry blossom it doubles in beauty, watch cities disappear under canopies of colour and national parks transform into spaces so surreal, you’ll think last night’s  sake got the better of you. Typically, the blossoms bloom somewhere between late March and early May. Part of their magic is that they’re only in bloom for a week or two – less if there are strong winds or heavy rain. For a short magical period the cherry blossoms are everywhere.

You’ll find all sorts of celebrations wrapped up in the blooming of the cherry blossom. The collective shindig is known as Hanami , which translates literally to ‘viewing flowers’. It encompasses all sorts of things: tea ceremonies, picnics, barbeques, sports and performing arts, all under canopies of blossom. Over one thousand years old, this celebration is very much a highlight on the calendar – and one you won’t want to miss. Blossoms vary slightly depending on the tree variety. The most common is a small white flower with five delicate petals. You’ll also find yellow, pink and green blossoms throughout the country. Trees in the south typically bloom before the north.

Don’t miss:   Besides checking out the blossoms, the three ‘must-dos’ are 1) an overnight stay at a traditional Ryokan in Koya San  2) A naked dip in Japan’s traditional Onsen (Hot Bath/Showers)  and 3) our Tokyo After 5 Urban Adventure and eat and drink your way around some local bars and restaurants.

Insider tip: Don’t leave home without slip-on shoes, hole-less socks (you’ll have your shoes off a lot). There’s also no need to tip in Japan.  It’s not really the custom.

BORNEO – August

When-to-travel-Borneo,-Mt-Kinabalu---NH53

Image c/o NH53, Flickr

Why August: Borneo’s climate is typical for a tropical region: generally hot and humid all year-round. Temperatures are usually in the high 20s for most of the year, dropping back to the low 20s at night. Rainfall tends to be in short, heavy bursts followed by glorious sunshine. Generally August and September are considered the best time to visit, with the east coast getting wetter in October, while the lands around Kota Kinabalu get drier. The trees fruit at this time too, which means orangutans can be seen grazing closer to the ground. Always a bonus.

Don’t miss:

  • A Mount Kinabalu climb. Mount Kinabalu is special. At the summit, climbers are walking over mostly granite rock that has been shaped over thousands of years by wind, water and glaciers to create sweeping panoramas framed by craggy spires and an impossibly blue sky. You can’t climb Kinabalu without feeling there is something magical about the mountain. The climb up Kinabalu itself is challenging . Although it’s an accessible climb, compared to some other mountain treks around the world, the physical agility and mental strength required to both summit and descend Mt Kinabalu is intense. Because of this, and because you start summiting in complete darkness around 2am, guides become more than guides – they are coaches, mentors, protectors, motivators. They keep you calm and focused, hand you their gloves and coats if you are cold and keep you entertained and energised when you think you will never make it to the top. The challenge is worth it – seeing sunrise from the top of Mount Kinabalu is an unforgettable experience.
  • The wildlife. Meeting the gentle orangutans of Sepilok is a must-do for visitors to Borneo. These orange-tinged creatures are captivating, entertaining and cheeky – and watching them play, eat and interact in the jungle of Sepilok is a privilege not to be missed. It’s also worth visiting Turtle Island ,  just north of Sandakan, Turtle Island Park is a haven for endangered green and hawksbill turtles. Seeing turtles land onshore at dusk, or baby turtles hatching, is a properly unforgettable moment.
  • Community Village stay. Borneo was our second destination ever.  Sapinggi Ladsou has been Intrepid’s main guide on Mt Kinabalu since we started running trips in Borneo twenty-five years ago. Over the years, Sapinggi and his wife, along with their ten children, have also welcomed Intrepid travellers into their home as part of a community village stay in Borneo. The whole family has been overwhelmingly generous with their hospitality, and they are well known and loved by the past travellers and staff who have visited them.

Insider tip:  The Poring Hot Springs are steaming hot pools of water near Mt Kinabalu, and a relaxing place to unwind after trekking the mountain. Sliding into the open-air baths is a therapeutic way to soothe your muscles. A nice outdoor reward for completing the climb.

The via ferrata : Following 2015’s devastating earthquake, the operator of the via ferrata (Mountain Torq) had completely rebuilt the trail and Intrepid now includes guided ascents of Kinabalu on our  Borneo – Hike, Bike and Kayak adventure. The Mt Kinabalu via ferrata (or ‘iron road’ in Italian) is devised to give climbers with little or no climbing experience access to rock faces normally reached by mountaineers and rock climbers. Kinabalua’s via ferrata is the highest via ferrata in the world at 3776M, and the only via ferrata in South East Asia.

CUBA – December

Cuba’s subtropical climate is ideal for travelling, with most places catching the cool trade winds that blow from the coast. This gives Cuba pleasant temperatures year-round. June, July and August are usually the hottest months, the dry season runs from November to April and the wet season from May to October. Even in the rainy season, downpours are short and heavy and shouldn’t hinder travel plans. Tropical storms and hurricanes are more prevalent in September and October but rarely cause problems for travellers.

Why December:  When it comes to Cuba, our advice is simple: go as soon as you can. Cuba has been in a time capsule: when Castro pressed pause on economic progress in the 60s, he also inadvertently pressed pause on Cuba. Visiting Cuba has been like stepping back in time – there’s almost no internet and ancient Chevrolets driving down cobblestone streets. All that is changing quickly with new American travel laws,  and that’s why Cuba it’s best to get there as soon as possible. In December, the weather will be at its very best, too.

  • Classic cars and cocktails in Havana. Classic cars and cool cocktails sum up Cuba to a T, so we married them together on this Havana tour straight from the mid-century . Cruise at low altitude through the faded elegance of Havana’s grand, old suburbs, then stop for a sundowner at the swinging Hotel Nacional.
  • Music & Dance.  Cubans love to dance, and trust us, they’ll help even the most uncoordinated traveller find their rhythm. Try some Salsa, Rumba, or Afro-Cuban Conga moves. There are open-air street parties and jazz clubs, so it’s best to embrace it all and just revel in the infectious beats and lively atmosphere of Cuba’s legendary nightlife.
  • Trinidad.  Havana may have gotten the reputation for being Cuba’s delightfully colourful city, but it’s Trinidad that’s Cuba’s real star. Located on the south side of the country’s centre with just over 73,000 inhabitants, Trinidad offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The town has a more relaxed energy and the brick roofs, cobblestone, and peeling paint further add to its charm. Getting out and taking a hike is definitely recommended, especially through El Cubano National Park up to the gorgeous Javira waterfall. Jump in and swim up to a cave for some bat-watching, bathe in the shallow waters for the ultimate post-hike cooldown. One of the best beaches in the world, Playa Ancón is just a short drive outside Trinidad. White sand, turquoise water, few people – the winning combo? Sip from a rum-filled coconut courtesy of a man with a horse-drawn cart, then kick things up a few notches with a beach BBQ organized by your guide.

Insider tip: Cuba’s much bigger than it looks, and the public transport is generally slow, complicated and subject to frequent cancellations and delays. We use private transport to get around, but if you’re looking for plenty of beach time you might prefer our Cuba sailing holiday . Or we also have cycling trips in Cuba.

SRI LANKA – January

Travel-seasons,-Sri-Lanka---Unsplash

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, with temperatures remaining in the high 20s throughout most of the year. The dry seasons are June – August and December – March.

January is the busiest time for our best-selling trip – Circle Sri Lanka . It’s the best time to visit the south and south west beaches as well as the hill country. Dry, sunny, and not too humid. Sri Lanka is a hot destination in more ways than one. Due to rising demand, last year we launched a Real Food Adventure in Sri Lanka , and this year we launched Sensational Sri Lanka , which goes to Jaffna in the north of the country. It’s the first time we’ve visited this area of the country since the civil war.

  • Sri Lanka is a hot destination because it really does have it all – food, culture, wildlife and beaches. It’s also an easy destination for Australians to explore in 2-3 weeks, and it offers great value for money so you won’t blow the budget.
  • The cultural triangle is a major drawcard for our travellers. All of our itineraries visit Kandy, Anuradhapura, spend time in Sigiriya to visit and climb Lion Rock, and in Polonnurawru we ride bikes through the ancient city.
  • Sri Lankan food is also a massive drawcard – that’s why we launched our Real Food Aventure which includes flavour-filled curries and sweet desserts, the amazing Sri Lankan seafood on offer at the Negombo seafood market, and the tea plantations of Bandarawela. The elephants of Udawalawe National Park are also a highlight, and our S ri Lanka Family Adventure includes a visit to the Elephant Transit Home to learn about the organisation’s work with orphaned or abandoned baby elephants

Sri Lanka is still an emerging tourism destination, so even the main sites don’t feel too touristy. It’s also relatively small and easy to get around – but packs a punch with a huge variety. The culture of Kandy, hiking and village homestays in the jungle highlands, safaris in Yalla National Park, the southern beaches around Unawatuna, or the Northern town of Jaffna – it’s all pretty special.

Tourism Seasonality

Most tourist destinations in the world are affected by the phenomenon of seasonality. Destinations with high fluctuations in seasonality often face various challenges, such as overcrowding, high prices, inadequate infrastructure in peak seasons, as well as a lack of services and job opportunities in shoulder and low seasons. Seasonality is a measurable feature with significant economic and social impacts.

Understanding the main characteristics can help to modify its occurrence. Causes can be natural such as the seasons and related climate conditions, or institutional such as public and school holidays. Consequently, seasonality is regular and consistent and can be predictable and anticipated. This makes it more possible to mitigate.

To measure the degree of seasonality, destinations can use specific indicators, ranging from tourist arrivals to occupancy rates. There are also indicators regarding initiatives to strengthen shoulder and low season periods, as well as measuring the level of effort designed to reduce seasonality. As seasonality is a factor in unemployment, seasonal employment and turnover of staff, indicators regarding the effects of seasonality on employment are important tools to monitor its social impact.

The Maldives

Flight time: 10 hours When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 28°C

There is no bad time to go to the Maldives. There is nothing bad about going to the Maldives at any time ever. They are perfect little islands, whichever you choose – tiny castaway-fantasy sandy islets, mostly with one immaculate resort, with various levels of splendidness. Even people who think they will get bored in the Maldives end up loving the Maldives. They're family-friendly , and for blissed-out beachy nirvana, they're hard to beat. And they're at their best during the British winter, and a quite do-able 10 hours away.

Where to stay: It's hard to beat Gili Lankanfushi, which sits on what might be the most beautiful lagoon in the country. We also love Alila Kothaifaru on the natural island of Kothaifaru, with its spattering of jungle-y vegetation between villas creating a truly private retreat. For some of the best snorkelling around, the Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa is located in one of the Maldives’ deepest, most northern atolls, ensuring plenty of marine life to peek at among the fluttering corals. Flight time: 4 hours 30 minutes from London When to go: March–May; October–November Average winter temperature: 22°C

The eastern Mediterranean Sea around Cyprus may be chilly in winter, but the island gets plenty of sunshine all year, so there's a good chance you'll get T-shirt weather even in the coldest months. From March, the island's flowers start to bloom, and there's barely another visitor in sight. It's a great option for families too as it's only a short hop from the UK and there are plenty of child-friendly hotels once you're there.

Where to stay: Anassa in Latchi made our Gold List this year as one of the best hotels in Europe . The elegant series of white buildings is particularly beloved for its multigenerational appeal thanks to a super slick kid's club and effortlessly chic adult-only spaces. For a child-free stay, adults-only Amavi is a glossy beachside bolthole with a fantastic rooftop sushi restaurant. Foodies will like Cap St George , with its seventh-floor restaurant offering incredible sea views and a regular rotation of Michelin-star chefs flown in from across the globe. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Cyprus .

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 26°C

For year-round sunshine, spotless beaches and impeccable service a short hop away, Dubai is an obvious choice. The Palm, a manmade sweep of beach packed with superb hotels, each with its own immaculate patch of beach, is perfect for family holidays . It's not all glass and shopping malls in Downtown Dubai: the Old Souk is a warren of glittering jewellery and pots, and the peaceful Dubai Creek hints at a time before the seven-star hotels and indoor ski slopes. Two new creative districts (Dubai Design District and Al Quoz) have gained the attention of the international art scene, too. To see the city in its best light, go in November, when it's not too humid and you can happily bronze by the pool all day.

Where to stay: The newly-renovated Bab Al Shams now has a bright, contemporary aesthetic that remains true to its Arabian roots, with new restaurants and fantastic sunset views. For some old-world glamour, there's the maximalist marble-clad palace Jumeirah Al Qasr , which made our Gold List in 2023 . And it’d be remiss not to mention Atlantis the Royal , the self-described ‘most ultra-luxury experiential resort in the world’, which saw Beyoncé perform at its opening celebration. See our best hotels in Dubai guide for more.

Flight time: 16.5 hours from London When to go: Bali is hot year-round. It is rainiest (and thus cheapest) November–April; but even when it rains, it's in short, tropical bursts. Average winter temperature: 27°C

Bali is the heavenly island with earthly pleasures. Back-to-blissed-out spa retreats so fine that Bali has developed a style all of its own: clean and contemporary, dark wood and linen whites. Parties, from flip-flop full-moon raves in hidden-away coves to the cool Potato Head Beach Club and The Lawn at the boho beach spot that everyone's talking about, Canggu . There's glamping here now, and chic boutiques. There's art in Ubud . There are spas absolutely everywhere. There are beaches, of course. And the pools here are something else: a classy, jungly deep green, shrouded by tropical leafery. Those incredible horizon pools high up overlooking rainforest – that's classic Bali.

Where to stay: Book ahead and you could nab a night in one of the world's most popular Airbnbs, The Hideout , a magical looking two-story bamboo hut in Selat. In Ubud, Capella Ubud is an African-inspired jungle camp home to 22 one-bedroom suites with sprawling outdoor decks and private plunge pools. At the edge of the Uyung River, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve has a gilded, glittering on-site temple, spacious villas with jungle views and spa treatments by renowned intuitive healer Ibu Ketut Mursi. Flight time : 13 hours from London to Mahé (including one stop) When to go : October–November Average winter temperature: 29°C

Adrift in the Indian Ocean , a thousand miles from the nearest coast of Africa , the Seychelles are the ultimate fantasy-island escape.  The archipelago has year-round heat and sunshine, as well as its fair share of rain. The wettest months in the Seychelles are November to March, but temperatures never get too oppressively hot (meandering around 24ºC at night and up to 29ºC in the daytime, year round). October is a great month to go for a hit of sunshine, before it gets too rainy, and the air is fresher.

Where to stay: Its private-island resorts – North Island , Denis Island , the Six Senses Zil Pasyon – are possibly the most sensational anywhere in the world, a honeymooner 's dream (even William and Kate honeymooned at North Island, though the hotel is too discreet to admit it). For more options, see our guide to the best Seychelles hotels .

Flight time: 12 hours from London  When to go: May–December Average winter temperature: 28°C

What Mauritius has over its Indian Ocean neighbours, the Seychelles and the Maldives, is its size and natural diversity, and the fact that you can do it independently. Its beaches are still potted tropical paradises, and here you can rent a car and go exploring to find your own deserted cove, drive or hike up into its rainforested hills, take a boat out and go snorkelling or dive in its extraordinary underwater world. It has a bit of a reputation for overly groomed resorts – but it also has some of the finest beach hotels in the world, and you can find little boutique hotels right on the beach, too. Perhaps the best months to go to Mauritius are September, October and November, when it's hot but not too hot (averaging around 25-28ºC in the day, a cooler 17-19ºC at night), and at its driest (the rainy season in Mauritius is from January til April).

Where to stay: The most spectacular stay might be Shangri-La Le Touessrok , a private island escape with two pristine golf courses, a pagoda-style spa and a sushi restaurant. For a fun Soho house-style atmosphere try LUX* Grand Baie – there's a poolside DJ, a rooftop athletics track and a nightclub underneath its fabulous Asian restaurant Ai KISU. See our best hotels in Mauritius guide for more.

Canary Islands

Flight time: 3 hours 30 minutes from London When to go: Year-round Average winter temperature: 22°C

It's summer all the time in the Canaries, where temperatures average in the low-mid 20s all year round. As well as the well-known destinations – Gran Canaria , Tenerife , Fuerteventura, Lanzarote (pictured) – there are three smaller islands that are less visited and less spoilt: La Palma , El Hierro and La Gomera . They don't appear on the average British holidaymaker's mental world-map, and make for interesting exploring and winter sunshine.

Where to stay: The Ritz-Carlton in Tenerife made our Gold List in 2022 – a pastel-pink, Moorish palace mansion of a hotel with eight restaurants, a handful of swimming pools and a decadent spa.

Thai islands

Flight time: 13 hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 32°C

The islands of Thailand are the stuff of castaway fantasies. White sand, rustic-chic beach shacks, a hammock gently swaying between two palm trees as a turquoise sea laps at the shore… There are dozens to choose from, and each offers something quite different, from the super-spas of Koh Samui to barefoot beach-bum in Koh Lipe, while Koh Lanta remains quietly chilled out with lovely places to stay on beaches that stretch for miles.

Where to stay: On Phang Nga, Six Senses Yai Noi has created the perfect castaway experience via a collection of stilted thatched-roof villas and a hilltop half-moon infinity pool. If you're headed to Phuket, Amanpuri has a special location on Pansea beach, plus an impressive selection of restaurants and a world-beating spa. For something the kids will love, the railway-themed InterContinental Khao Yai Resort has upcycled vintage railway carriages serving as suites, and an old-timey ticketing booth for a lobby. Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Flight time: 10+ hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 24°C

Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, on the Atlantic Coast, has a magical mix of ancient and buzzy-right-now cultures. Swim in its green ceynotes, discover temples, salute the sun beneath the glitterball gods with fashionistas on the beach in Tulum . Mix it up in colonial Mérida . Go barefoot on Isla Holbox . The best time to come is during Britain's darkest months.

Where to stay: Beachside retreat Hotel Esencia , beloved by celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Lupita Nyong’o, made our gold list of the best hotels in the world for 2023. Taghazout, Morocco

Flight time: 3 hours 50 mins from London When to go: December–March Average winter temperature: 21°C

Once a slightly rough-around-the-edges hippie town, Taghazout is now Morocco ’s top surf destination. The sleepy fishing village on the Atlantic coast hasn’t lost any of its old-fashioned charm, and goats still wander gormlessly through the dusty tangerine-coloured streets while fishermen haul in their daily catches from rickety blue and white boats. For serious surfers, winter marks the beginning of peak season, and as the swell rips up, the break-chasing crowds arrive. Temperatures usually hover around a very pleasant 20°C, but Saharan winds often push the mercury up much higher. The places to stay keep getting smarter, offering surf lessons in the day and rooftop yoga at sunset. And even if you’re not into surfing, there are plenty of beautiful hiking trails nearby, camel rides along the beach and excellent fishing too.

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go : October–March Average winter temperature: 24°C

The mid-Atlantic archipelago of Bermuda , mythical setting for Shakespeare's Tempest , is a land of pink beaches, pink houses and brightly coloured shorts. It is Caribbean in nature, though it's much closer to the UK – so shorter flight times – and has a distinctive character all of its own. Its pink-sand beaches are lovely, too. Those along the South Shore are the glory of the island. Horseshoe Bay is the best known and most crowded, though Warwick Long Bay, a short way along the coast, is just as alluring. At one end of Horseshoe there is a little patch of sand the size of a playground, cut off from the rest of it by a rocky hillock.

Flight time: 10 hours from London When to go: Year-round Average winter temperature: 21°C

'The Golden State' is an appropriate nickname; California is one of the sunniest of US states, with mild winters, little rain and plenty of sunshine, especially in the south. For a classic USA road trip , hire a convertible and hit the Pacific Coast road. State Route 1 runs 550 miles from Leggett all the way down to Malibu. It has famously beautiful views much of the way, and the best section is that from San Francisco through Monterey and San Simeon to San Luis Obispo (where the road drifts inland), although north of San Francisco the route is wilder and less crowded. Aim to drive southwards, to be closer to the sea.

Where to stay: In Los Angeles, The Hoxton has brought a healthy dose of European flair to the West Coast. For a classic stay, Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica has come to embody the finest of So-Cal's barefoot luxury. In San Francisco, Proper is a buzzy stay beloved for its eclectic decor and perennially-packed rooftop bar, Charmaine’s. See our edit of the best hotels in California for more.

Bora Bora, Tahiti & French Polynesia

Flight time: One full day from the UK When to go: Year-round (though March is particularly rainy on Tahiti). Average winter temperature: 28°C

In both geography and spirit, just about as far from a drizzly British winter as you can get. French Polynesia is made up of 100-odd little islands in the South Pacific Ocean, the best-known of them Tahiti and Bora Bora. They are out of this world. Castaway fantasy, ringed by reefs; the water unbelievable shades of turquoise blue; the hibiscus flowers Gauguin bright; everything bright and light and hyper-real.

Where to stay: The Brando is the area's biggest-hitting hotel – owned by Marlon Brando and set on a stunning, living coral reef.

South Africa

Flight time: 12 hours from London When to go : November–March Average winter temperature: 27°C

It might be in another hemisphere, but South Africa is in the same time zone as the UK – which means no jet lag. In Cape Town and beyond there is stunning scenery, breathtaking beaches, as well as world-class wines and fabulous food. The country's most celebrated stretch of coastline is the glorious Garden Route. However in the other direction, a road trip through the Western Cape makes a rewarding alternative and the weather is particularly good in December and January. The less-explored Overberg Coast has wide beaches, good restaurants and wineries, moody seas at the southernmost tip of Africa, and a sensational coastal reserve that even the locals don't know about.

Where to stay: In Cape Town, check into The Silo , which sits on top of the Museum of African Art. Just over an hour's drive away Leeu Estates (pictured) in Franschhoek is an arty stay for post-safari relaxation.

Rajasthan, India

Flight time: 8 hours from London When to go: October–March Average winter temperature: 25°C

With its cities of pink, blue and gold, its romantic lakeside palaces and desert camps, Rajasthan is India 's brightest and most beautiful state. Go there and get carried away, whether you're getting stuck into the hustle-bustle streets of Jaipur , escaping into the desert around Jaisalmer, or floating wistfully across the lake in romantic Udaipur.

Where to stay: Six Senses Fort Barwara took almost a decade to transform the 700-year-old fort into a 48-suite hotel. Once a hiding place for pirate treasure and prohibition liquor, Harbour Island in the Bahamas is a colourfully eccentric retreat where every night is a party and every day more vibrant than the last. The sand is pink, the turquoise water is home to green sea turtles and orange starfish, and yellow-throated birds fly about the trees. Days on the beach are long and lazy, and the time of day forgotten.

Where to stay: For a boutique stay, The Other Side is a small, gorgeous set of tents and shacks on Harbour Island.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Flight time: 5 hours from London When to go: March–May; October–November Average winter temperature: 23°C

Israel enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year – and although winter here may not be as scorching as some of the other big-hitters, if you come towards the beginning or end it’s still warm enough to lie on a beach. The modern Middle Eastern metropolis of Tel Aviv is just a five-hour flight from London, making it an easy long-weekend hop. With its skyscraper skyline, striking Bauhaus architecture, avant-garde art galleries, world-class restaurants and hedonistic after-dark culture, this is the Mediterranean’s very own version of Manhattan. Throw in 14km of beautiful coastline, and it’s easy to see why so many creatives are drawn to the vibrant city.

Where to stay: One-time 19th-century convent The Jaffa , in the city's Arabic district, is the most ambitious design hotel.

Jordan is full of surprises. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, to give it its full name, has wonders both natural and ancient. It's true that much of the country is desert (seemingly endless Wadi Rum has even doubled as the moon in Hollywood movies), but there are also swathes of fertile land, bright and beautifully green. The waters of the Red Sea, off the coast of Aqaba, are bath-warm all year – and colourful, too, home to myriad fish, rays and turtles which make their home on the full-of-life coral reefs – and the best time to go for beach weather is February til May. Meanwhile, winters can be chilly in the north of the country, where snow caps the magnificent treetops of the Ajloun Forest Reserve; and the best months to go to ancient Petra, Amman and the north are March, April, May, September and October.

Flight time: 7 hours and 15 minutes from London When to go: October–April Average winter temperature: 26°C

Oman is a less-glitzy, laid-back alternative to Dubai – only the landscape here is more dramatic: wide open spaces punctuated by oases and desert towns; valleys fragrant with rose and sandalwood; hidden coves with golden beaches and brilliant-turquoise water. The capital, Muscat dazzles in the year-round sunshine with its grand mosques and bustling souks. Up in the far north-east, the Musandam Peninsula has some of the best diving in the Middle East (whale shark and turtles are the big draw).

Where to stay: Six Senses Zighy Bay is on a golden sweep of sand backed by the impossibly steep Al Hajar Mountains. To feel truly isolated, camp in handmade Bedouin tents among the epic sand dunes of the Wahiba Sands south of Muscat – it's the best way to find authentic Oman.

Flight time: 13+ hours from London When to go: October–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

With its lovely Caribbean climate, guaranteed warm and sunny days and very little rain, Cuba ’s weather is at its most reliable during the UK winter. The beaches down on the south coast may get the best sunshine and draw the biggest crowds, but there’s plenty beyond the palm-fringed stretches of sand. Havana ’s got its colourful pastel-hued buildings, cigars and Cadillacs, while the perfectly preserved Spanish colonial architecture in UNESCO-protected Trinidad makes the city feel lost in time. Elsewhere, there’s no end of nature reserves, lush forests, mountains and tobacco plantations to explore.

Where to stay: Gardens Havana is a sweet guesthouse in a faded, renovated townhouse in Havana.

Western Australia

Flight time : 20 hours from London When to go : November–March Average winter temperature: 35°C

The north-west coast of Western Australia is remote (it closed its boarders to the rest of Australia for over two years during Covid), beautiful and largely uninhabited. It has the least-visited of all Australia's coral reefs, Ningaloo Reef, a pristine 260km stretch of coral where thrilling encounters are fairly routine, whether you're diving or snorkelling. Turtles nest from November to March.

Where to stay: Como the Treasury in Perth is the city's smoothest stay, with a rooftop restaurant and beautiful bedrooms.

Flight time: 14+ hours from London (via Johannesburg) When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 27°C

Astonishingly, Namibia gets barely half a million visitors a year – while neighbouring South Africa receives almost 10 times that number. But as travellers are slowly beginning to discover, this is one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations: rugged, intrepid and dramatic. More than a dozen new camps and lodges have opened up over the past few years, each one rocking a more creative approach to conservation. Namibia is usually touted as a year-round destination, but in truth the searing summer temperatures can be oppressive. November to March may coincide with the country’s wettest months, but with the rain comes a stunning transformation of scenery. The arid desert morphs into a lush green carpet; swarms of migratory birds arrive, and animals start breeding. Rain is localised and comes in short, sharp bursts, so it’s unlikely to have too much of an impact on your trip.

Where to stay: Habitas Namibia offers an intriguing blend of safari , wellness and culture. For more, see our favourite off-grid safaris in Namibia .

Belize ’s peak season coincides perfectly with the UK’s coldest months. Although temperatures remain high all year-round, January to March has the lowest chance of rain, making this an ideal time to explore this tiny adventure-packed nation. Bordered by Guatemala and Mexico, Belize attracts a fraction of the crowds of its neighbours, yet the natural and cultural diversity of this former British colony is truly compelling. It’s home to Mayan ruins, national parks, nature reserves and the Belize Barrier Reef (which forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world’s second largest), all begging to be explored. The country’s jungly interior contrasts with a dazzling Caribbean coastline and hundreds of small cayes and islands, while a flurry of fresh hotels have all put eco-tourism at the top of their agenda.

Lamu, Kenya

Flight time: 17+ hours from London, via Nairobi When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 32°C

When the Foreign Office slapped a travel ban on Lamu after the 2011 Somali terrorist attacks, it fell off the map. But now with sanctions lifted, crowds are starting to flock back to this far-flung African island that still feels totally unchanged by time. It’s long been a popular beachy bolt-on after an epic Kenyan safari, attracting curious travellers rather than flag-following sightseers. There are no vehicles, just donkeys and dhows, and the heady mix of Arab, Persian, Chinese, Indian and European cultures is mesmerising. After a few days in the UNESCO-protected Old Town, head south to the deserted beaches or drift over by dhow to the nearby Robinson Crusoe islands of Manda and Kiwayu. From December to February, temperatures average a steamy 32°C, making winter the prime time to come and enjoy the postcard-perfect empty sands and Lamu’s laid-back rhythm.

Where to stay: Seafront Peponi was built in the 1930s and has been a hotel since the 1960s, with an incredible pool, shady verandah and a list of former guests that includes Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Flight time: 17+ hours from London (via Mexico City) When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 30°C

Over on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, two beach towns sit side-by-side: Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo . They couldn’t be more different. Ixtapa, stacked with high-rise hotels and modern infrastructure was purpose-built for tourists, while, just round the bay, Zihuatanejo has kept hold of its old-world charm and sleepy-fishing-village feel. It’s a low-key beach retreat with genuine Mexican flair; fisherman flog their catches on the shore each morning, and the town centre is filled with historical cobbled streets and a buzzy market. Clutches of boutique properties sit right on the beach or overlooking the bay – which is a hit with surfers. It’s hot all year round, but October to April sees the least rain, making this a perfect spot for a hit of winter vitamin D.

Where to stay: We love the Thompson , which spotlights interiors from Mexico City-based studios.

Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama

Flight time: 13+ hours from London When to go: December–March Average winter temperature: 32°C

The Gulf of Chiriquí is nothing new – travellers have long been flocking to the white-sand beaches and dazzling turquoise waters of Panama ’s Caribbean archipelago. But the Pacific side is still significantly less discovered. There’s Islas Secas, a highly exclusive, privately-owned archipelago of 14 islands offering pristine beaches and one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific, making it the perfect spot for diving and snorkelling. It's just under an hour from Panama City by twin-otter plane and is totally worth it for the privacy and seclusion once you arrive. The best time to come is from January to April, when the wet rainy season gives way to a few months of glorious sunshine and scorching temperatures.

Where to stay: Philanthropist Louis Bacon opened Islas Secas , home to four individually designed Casita sites and, three Tented Casitas, all located on one of the islands and sleeping up to just 24 guests.

São Tomé and Príncipe

Flight time: 20+ hours from London (via Lisbon and Accra) When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 30°C

Marooned off the coast of Gabon, these tiny unspoiled islands together make up Africa’s smallest and least-visited country. But it’s thanks to the tiny tourist numbers that São Tomé and Príncipe still retain the allure of somewhere almost completely undiscovered. These jungly islands are home to more endemic species per square mile than anywhere else on earth – making them a bit like Africa’s very own Galápagos . January, February and March are the hottest months, when the dry and dusty winds blow straight in from the Sahara.

Where to stay: When South African billionaire Mark Shuttleworth opened up his first boutique hotel, Bom Bom , back in 2013, a new breed of luxury traveller arrived; since then, he’s opened two more, Roça Sundy and Praia Sundy . They’re all part of a wider project to create jobs and boost tourism – so you’ll be doing good while on holiday too.

Flight time: 13.5 hours from London UK (via Johannesburg, South Africa) When to go: April–November Average winter temperature: 26°C

This southern African country has the most astonishing coast – the beaches of Mozambique are out of this world. Great stretches of sand, wild and dune-backed; lapped by the beautiful Indian Ocean where humpback whales breach, where you can swim with manta rays in the Mozambique Channel. In the little islands of Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago , a protected marine park towards the south, there are sand-floor bars and simple thatched lodges, and the most sensational sandy islets in bluer-than-blue waters, like wisps of cloud in a summer sky. On the beaches of northern Mozambique you feel as though you're at the end of the world; off this coast are the dreamlike Quirimbas Islands, including heavenly Vamizi

For those keen to tread where others have not, Mozambique has a certain caché – savvy travellers have been returning, in small numbers, to this coast for the past 20-odd years – and a few new spruced-up hotels are starting to appear – but are keen to keep it all a secret. We say go now, before the secret is out.

Where to stay: In one of the 17 prettily stripped-back bandas on the southern peninsula's tip at Machangulo Beach Lodge .

Flight time: 19 hours from London When to go: November–February Average winter temperature: 25°C

Everyone is seduced by Laos's misty, mystic mountainscapes and its historic city, Luang Prabang From the moment the country opened its doors to tourism in the 1980s, visitors have talked in reverent tones about the sleepy town far upcountry on the banks of the Mekong River. It captivates. It weaves a spell. It carries some flavour of Indochina before the modern world got there.

Flight time : 11 hours from London When to go : December–May Average winter temperature: 26°C

Ecuador is less developed than Costa Rica , so expect an adventure — one with everything its Latin cousin has to offer, and more besides. Want wildlife? Take a luxury cruise into the Ecuadorian Amazon. Want surf ? Ecuador’s 1,400 miles of Pacific coast has plenty of that. And then there’s Quito , a much smarter capital than San Jose: a heady blend of steamy salsotecas, grand Andean vistas, and fabulous hotels in ravishingly restored colonial mansions (none more elegant than the peerless Casa Gangotena). You may have heard of another of its under-the-radar destinations, the Galapagos, too. Ecuador’s different geographical zones have their own, distinct weather patterns, but Europe’s winter is when the weather is warmest in Quito and the Highlands; driest in the jungle; and sunniest on the coast. Above: Laguna de Quilotoa is a beautiful crater lake in a secluded location of the Ecuadorian Andes.

The Andaman Islands

Flight time: 14 hours from London  When to go: January–March Average winter temperature: 29°C

Every bit as dreamy as the Maldives, but more satisfyingly off-radar, the Andaman Islands have smartened up. This tropical archipelago — geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than its owner, India — has always been brochure-beautiful, but only recently blessed with luxury digs. Those far-flung beaches and impossibly pure waters were more reward for intrepid surfers and gap-year backpackers until now. But it was only a matter of time before this primitive paradise turned upscale. Havelock is the most developed of the 572 islands, the vast majority of which are off-limits to visitors (and populated by indigenous tribes). It’s here that Indian luxury hotel giant Taj has newly scattered 72 thatched villas under a rainforest canopy, fringing the fabled Radhanagar beach, widely said to be among the best in the world.   Winter is the clearest, driest time of year — particularly January to March — with temperatures around 29C.

Where to stay: Jalakara is a boutique, teak-and-concrete sanctuary tucked into a banana plantation, where there’s no WiFi, no TV — just utter, nature-swathed serenity.

Karnataka, India

Flight time : 9 hours from London When to go : October–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

Karnataka’s beach scene is every bit as beautiful, but rather less glowsticky, than Goa ’s, though it shares the same coast (the state of Karnataka is further south). Gokarna beach, often listed among India’s finest sandy crescents, is chilled-out, powdery and palm-fringed; beach-goers more hammock-swinging yogis than UV-painted ravers. Better still, there’s more to explore beyond browning and sun salutations. Hampi ’s magical, ancient temples and bizarre, perilously-stacked boulders have fascinated wanderers and vagabonds for hundreds of years.

Where to stay: Try trekking and then de-stressing at the Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa , in the emerald, coffee- and spice-planted hills of Coorg.

Vietnam

Flight time: 12 hours from London When to go: November–February Average winter temperature: 27°C

Vietnam may well be one of the most fascinating, beautiful and charming countries you will ever visit. Saigon is wonderful, colonial and quirky; Ho Chi Minh City has one of the world's best food scenes. And the coast of Vietnam – oh, the coast! The beaches are extraordinary. So much untouched beauty. Little islands and dramatic bays to explore by boat. Out-of-this-world beach-chic places to stay, right on the sand. And even though it's easy-going and luxury can be found everywhere, it still feels like a secret, still some sense of discovery about a trip there.

Where to stay: On a stretch of under-rated Vietnamese coastline, Regent Phu Quoc is a luxury gem with all the trimmings for an idyllic long-haul fly-and-flop.

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go: October–March Average winter temperature: 28°C

Ghana’s ‘Africa for beginners’ reputation tips a hat to the ease of a trip here — stable politics, developed towns, functional transport. But it misses all the other things that make Ghana great. Like the capital, Accra, a spirited city stuffed to the gills with red-hot food, nightlife and art. See Urban Grill, Afro-Latin fusion helmed by Andrew DiCataldo, of Manhattan’s once-loved Patria; rooftop club Carbon, owned by Nick House of Mahiki; and Gallery 1957, with its knack for edgy homegrown shows that blow up on social media. Then there’s the beaches: bonfire parties and street food at Accra’s own Labadi. Winter months are hot — temperatures average around 28°C — so you’ll be glad of a bracing Atlantic dip. Alright, there’s no Big Five, but there are safaris: walking with elephants, world-class birding, humpback-whale-watching. Plus there’s that handy hour’s time difference in common with South Africa, with only half the flight time.

Where to stay: The soothing White Sands Beach Resort & Spa , an exclusive private members’ club just an hour’s drive from Accra.

Tangier, Marrakech

Flight time: 3 hours 40 minutes from London When to go: March–May Average winter temperature: 17°C

From the 1920s to the 1950s, port city Tangier was a playground for the maddest and baddest bohemians: Beat icons like Burroughs and Kerouac; glamorously demon-plagued playwrights from Tennessee Williams to Jean Genet. But it wasn’t just the romance of boxy white-washed buildings fanning along a too-blue African shoreline that brought them. The city’s status as a near-lawless ‘international zone’ made strong drugs, strong cocktails and other strongly sordid entertainments all-too-readily available. The Moroccan monarchy later enacted punishment: the city was left to rot. A new king and a new attitude have revived it, widespread restoration inviting a smarter vitality, where cafés-cum-bookshops and speakeasies retain a raffish-cool, without segueing into seedy. In a hilltop casbah, El Morocco Club is where the leisure class make easy work of looking beautiful while slurping oysters and sipping Mojitos. And though chaotic Marrakech isn’t short of designer riads to escape to, Tangier is an infinitely jauntier option, and with T-shirt temperatures to boot.

To start, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the island’s turquoise lagoon surrounded by lush jungle.

If you’re looking for more than relaxation on your trip, consider hiking or booking a 4X4 tour of Mount Otemanu, part of an extinct volcano that rises 2,400 feet above the lagoon. You can also snorkel among the coral reef of Coral Gardens, where you might catch a glimpse of reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Seasonality can be influenced by various factors, including weather conditions, holiday seasons, cultural events, and school breaks. These factors influence people’s travel preferences and the timing of their trips. For example, many people prefer to visit tropical destinations during the winter months to escape the cold weather, while others might opt for destinations that offer unique cultural experiences during specific festivals or events.

It is important to note that seasonality can vary significantly between different destinations and can even occur within a single destination. While some popular travel destinations may experience a predictable seasonal pattern year after year, others may have more sporadic fluctuations in visitor numbers due to specific events or promotional campaigns.

The impact of seasonality can be felt by both tourists and businesses in the tourism industry. For tourists, seasonality can affect the cost and availability of accommodations, transportation options, and the overall travel experience. It can also result in overcrowding and long queues at popular attractions during peak seasons, potentially diminishing the enjoyment of the trip.

For businesses in the tourism industry, managing seasonality is essential for maintaining consistent revenue streams and ensuring sustainability. During peak seasons, businesses may experience high demand and profitability, but they also face challenges such as increased competition, higher operating costs, and the need to provide quality services to a larger volume of visitors. Conversely, off-peak seasons can present the challenge of lower demand and limited revenue, requiring businesses to adapt their strategies and offerings to attract visitors during these periods.

Overall, understanding and effectively managing seasonality in tourism is crucial for both tourists and businesses in order to optimize travel experiences, minimize costs, and maintain a sustainable industry.

Factors Contributing to Seasonality

Seasonality in tourism is influenced by a wide range of factors that shape the patterns of visitor numbers throughout the year. These factors can be categorized into several key elements:

  • Weather and Climate: One of the most significant factors contributing to seasonality is the weather and climate of a destination. Travelers often prefer to visit destinations with favorable weather conditions during their vacations. For example, beach destinations tend to be more popular during the summer months, while mountain destinations attract visitors during the winter for skiing and snowboarding activities.
  • Holidays and Festivals: Holidays and festivals have a significant impact on travel patterns. Many people choose to travel during their national holidays or school breaks. For example, Christmas and New Year’s holidays are an ideal time for family vacations, and popular festivals like Oktoberfest or Carnival attract large numbers of tourists to specific destinations during certain periods.
  • Seasonal Activities and Attractions: Certain activities and attractions are only available or more enjoyable during specific seasons. For example, wildlife safaris in Africa might be best during the dry season when animals gather around watering holes, or springtime in Japan is renowned for its beautiful cherry blossoms. These unique experiences attract visitors during particular times of the year, contributing to seasonality.
  • Economic Factors: Economic factors, such as exchange rates, can impact travel patterns. A favorable exchange rate can make a destination more affordable for international travelers, increasing the tourist numbers during that period. Conversely, a strong currency might discourage visitors, leading to a decrease in demand during certain times.
  • Promotional Campaigns: Marketing efforts and promotional campaigns can influence the seasonality of a destination. Tourism boards, airlines, hotels, and other stakeholders often run targeted marketing campaigns during specific periods to attract visitors. These campaigns can create spikes in tourist numbers during the promotional period and influence travel behavior.

It is important to note that while these factors are influential in shaping seasonality, the specific patterns can vary widely between destinations. Every destination has its own unique set of factors that contribute to their seasonal visitation patterns.

By understanding the factors that contribute to seasonality, businesses in the tourism industry can better plan their operations and marketing strategies to effectively cater to the demands of different seasons. Likewise, understanding these factors as a traveler can help you plan your trips, avoid peak crowds, and make the most of the unique experiences available during different times of the year.

Effects of Seasonality on Tourism

Seasonality in tourism can have both positive and negative effects on destinations and the tourism industry as a whole. Understanding these effects is crucial for businesses and travelers to adapt and make informed decisions. Let’s explore some of the key effects of seasonality:

  • Economic Impact: Seasonality can significantly impact the economic aspects of tourism. During peak seasons, destinations experience a surge in tourist numbers, leading to increased revenue for businesses and the local economy. This can create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth. Conversely, in off-peak seasons, there is a decline in visitor numbers, resulting in a decrease in revenue for businesses and potential economic challenges for the destination.
  • Service Quality: High seasonality can put pressure on businesses to meet the demands of a larger volume of visitors. This can affect the quality of services provided, as businesses may struggle to handle the increased workload. Longer wait times, overcrowded attractions, and difficulty securing accommodations can impact the overall travel experience for tourists.
  • Pricing and Availability: During peak seasons, prices for accommodations, flights, and other travel services tend to increase due to high demand. The limited availability of accommodations can also result in higher prices. Conversely, in off-peak seasons, prices may be lower, and there may be more flexibility in terms of availability. This can provide an opportunity for travelers to enjoy more affordable trips and access to premium services at a lower cost.
  • Environmental Impact: Seasonality can impact the environment in tourism destinations. High visitor numbers during peak seasons can put stress on natural resources, lead to increased pollution, and disrupt the local ecosystem. Sustainable tourism practices and responsible visitor behavior are essential to mitigate these impacts and ensure the long-term conservation of natural and cultural heritage.
  • Community and Cultural Impact: Seasonality can influence the local communities and cultural dynamics in tourism destinations. In some cases, communities may heavily rely on tourism as a source of income, and the fluctuations in visitor numbers can significantly impact their livelihoods. Some destinations may experience cultural and social changes during high seasons, with an influx of visitors bringing both positive and negative impacts on local traditions and way of life.

Overall, the effects of seasonality on tourism are multi-faceted and can vary depending on the destination and specific circumstances. The key is to strike a balance that maximizes the positive impacts while mitigating the negative effects. By understanding the effects of seasonality, destinations and businesses can develop strategies to manage and adapt to fluctuations in tourist numbers, ensuring a sustainable and enjoyable travel experience for all.

Strategies to Manage Seasonality

Managing seasonality in tourism is crucial for destinations and businesses to optimize their operations, provide consistent services, and ensure a sustainable industry. Here are some effective strategies that can be employed to manage and mitigate the effects of seasonality:

  • Diversify Tourism Products: Destinations can develop and promote a diverse range of tourism products to attract visitors during off-peak seasons. This can include creating new attractions, organizing events, and offering unique experiences that are available year-round. By providing a variety of activities and attractions, destinations can encourage tourists to visit outside of the traditional peak seasons.
  • Promote Shoulder Seasons: Shoulder seasons refer to the periods just before or after the peak season. Promoting travel during these shoulder seasons can help spread the visitor numbers more evenly throughout the year. Offering incentives such as discounted rates or special packages during these periods can entice travelers to visit during less crowded times.
  • Targeted Marketing and Promotion: Destinations can implement targeted marketing and promotion campaigns to attract visitors during off-peak seasons. This can involve marketing campaigns in specific regions or countries, highlighting unique experiences available during those periods, and offering special deals or discounts. By effectively communicating the benefits of visiting during off-peak seasons, destinations can encourage more balanced visitation patterns.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Collaboration between tourism stakeholders is essential in managing seasonality. By working together, businesses can create joint promotions, share resources, and develop packages that encourage visitors to explore different attractions and activities within the destination. Cooperation between accommodation providers, tour operators, and local attractions can help distribute the visitor flow more evenly throughout the year.
  • Infrastructure and Capacity Development: Improving infrastructure and enhancing the capacity of tourism facilities can help destinations handle the influx of visitors during peak seasons. This includes expanding transportation options, upgrading accommodations, and developing tourist infrastructure in less crowded areas. By increasing the capacity to accommodate visitors, destinations can manage the seasonality more effectively.

It is important to note that managing seasonality requires a long-term perspective and consistent efforts. Continuous monitoring and analysis of visitor patterns, feedback from tourists, and collaboration between stakeholders are essential for implementing effective management strategies.

By employing these strategies, destinations can maximize their potential as year-round tourism hotspots, provide better experiences for visitors, generate sustainable revenue streams, and minimize the negative impacts of seasonality on the local economy and environment.

Case Studies on Seasonality in Tourism

Let’s take a look at some real-life case studies that exemplify the impact of seasonality on popular travel destinations:

  • Bali, Indonesia: Bali is known for its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture, making it a sought-after destination for travelers worldwide. However, Bali experiences significant seasonality, with a peak season from June to August and during the Christmas and New Year period. During these months, the island is bustling with tourists, resulting in higher prices for accommodations and crowded attractions. To combat seasonality, Bali has been promoting its shoulder seasons, particularly in the months of April and September, by offering attractive deals and packages to encourage visitors during these less crowded times.
  • Whistler, Canada: Whistler, located in British Columbia, Canada, is a renowned ski resort and outdoor adventure destination. Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts flock to Whistler during the winter months, creating a high season for the destination. However, the summer months experience a significant drop in visitor numbers. To manage seasonality, Whistler has expanded its outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, hiking, and golfing, making it an attractive destination for adventure seekers year-round. Additionally, the resort offers discounted accommodation rates and packages during the off-peak seasons, enticing visitors to explore the destination outside of the winter months.
  • Phuket, Thailand: Phuket is a popular beach destination in Thailand, offering pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cultural attractions. The island experiences a peak season from November to March when tourists from around the world seek respite from the winter months in their home countries. During this period, Phuket witnesses a surge in visitor numbers, leading to higher prices and crowded beaches. To manage seasonality, Phuket has been promoting the “Green Season,” which falls between April and October. During this time, tourists can enjoy lower accommodation rates, fewer crowds, and still experience plenty of sunshine. Sustainable tourism practices, such as initiatives to preserve marine life and reduce plastic waste, have also been implemented to attract more visitors during the off-peak season.
  • Oktoberfest, Munich: One of the most famous events in Germany, Oktoberfest in Munich, attracts millions of visitors from all over the world. This traditional beer festival takes place over 16 days, usually from late September to early October. During the festival, Munich experiences a significant increase in tourist arrivals, leading to higher demand for accommodation, long queues at beer tents, and crowded streets. To manage the influx of visitors, Munich has extended the festival to include weekends before and after the official dates, effectively spreading out the crowds and offering visitors a chance to experience Oktoberfest in a less crowded and more enjoyable environment.

These case studies highlight the various strategies destinations use to manage seasonality and balance visitor numbers throughout the year. By implementing targeted promotions, diversifying tourism products, and encouraging travel during shoulder seasons, these destinations have successfully mitigated the negative impacts of seasonality and provided tourists with better experiences.

Seasonality is a fundamental aspect of tourism that significantly impacts both travelers and businesses in the industry. Understanding and effectively managing seasonality can enhance travel experiences, optimize operations, and ensure the sustainability of destinations.

Best Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter Destinations

Each of the four season offers fun and exciting vacation possibilities

Pick your favorite time of the year—there's bound to be a destination that sparkles with natural beauty and playful energy during those months. Whether you love sun, snow, or sand, or simply want to surround yourself with magnificent scenery, it's easy to find destinations where the whole family can celebrate the season.

Philadelphia : Indoor and Outdoor Spring Flowers

The big burst of cheery yellow daffodils and pastel-colored blossoms along Philly's major thoroughfares and parks gives promise that winter is finally fading. The weather can still be feisty, but that won't be a problem at the long-running indoor Philadelphia Flower Show , which is held at the enormous Pennsylvania Convention Center. If you can't make the show, there are still plenty of spring blooms around the city, including at the four-acre Azalea Garden near the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum—the very same steps that had a starring role in the movie “Rocky.” About an hour's drive west of there, the greater metropolitan area's beloved Longwood Gardens is awash in the fragrance of flowers. The vast display gardens and conservatory buildings are planted with so many varieties of flowers that a rainbow of colors will greet you throughout the season.

Spring in Tucson : The Desert in Bloom

If you think desert landscapes are all about sand and sagebrush—think again. Spring in the Sonoran Desert around Tucson , Arizona, will be a big, beautiful surprise for you. Wildflowers bust out in a huge carpet of color after ample winter rainfalls, but even in dry years, poppies, lupines and flowering shrubs dot the landscape with splashes of red, orange and blue. Cactuses bloom a bit later—pear in May and the mighty saguaros in June. Spring is an ideal time for the golfers in your family to hit the links, including the wallet-friendly municipal courses. Your little buckaroos will get a kick out of Old Tucson , where the price of admission transports youngsters and grown-ups alike back to the days of the Wild West.

Summer in Williamsburg : History and Theme Parks

School's out and the kids are free from busy schedules and homework. They probably won't even realize that your summer vacation in Colonial Williamsburg is educational, since you’re all having so much fun! History doesn't seem so staid when folks in Colonial garb reenact scenes in the actual buildings, gardens, workshops and taverns from the 17th and 18th centuries. Historic Jamestowne , a half-hour drive from Williamsburg, has an archaeological dig to visit and replicas of the small sailing ships that brought settlers to the New World. Another summer bonus: Instead of short breaks crammed between classes, the whole family can play all day at the Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park and splash through another day at Water Country USA.

Summer in Wisconsin Dells : The Water Park Capital

Water has always been a big deal in Wisconsin Dells . The town's name came from the Wisconsin River's rapid rush as it carved majestic formations on the sandstone banks. You can still enjoy the scenery and small-town atmosphere when you stroll the city's River Walk . But these days, the big deal in Wisconsin Dells is the theme park-style pools, slides, rides and play areas that make it the Waterpark Capital of the World. Pack plenty of sunscreen along with your swim gear, and bring sneakers and shorts, too. You'll want to change into dry clothes when you leave the water parks to hike, ride a zipline, or explore nearby lakes and canyons.

New Hampshire Maximum Fall Foliage

It’s a good idea to bring cameras and warm coats on your autumn getaway to New Hampshire . The astonishing array of red, gold, orange and yellow leaves that color the hills and valleys are a photographer's dream, but there's also a chill in the air, what with winter not too far away. Before you go, check the Foliage Tracker at VisitNH.com to see where the brightest colors are. One option is to visit Manchester —about an hour outside of Boston—in October, when the colors are typically at their peak in the Merrimack Valley. Or you can meander on up to Concord , the state capital, and then head east through the countryside to Portsmouth for the full New England seacoast village experience, before looping back to Manchester or heading down I-95 to points south.

Olympic Peninsula Autumn: Forests, Salmon and Whales

Fall foliage isn't the only natural wonder that makes an autumn getaway great. The peaceful landscape of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula has spots where trees with flaming red and yellow leaves accent the evergreen forests. But this is also the season when salmon return to their spawning grounds, and you can get a good view of the phenomenon at the Hoh River Visitor Center in Olympic National Park . The salmon run attracts whales, so there's a good chance you'll spot one or more of the five species that populate the Strait of Juan de Fuca; you can either look for them from shore, or take a whale-watching boat tour out of Port Angeles .

Classic Aspen Winter: Skiing and Snow Sports

You have lots of choices in Colorado to indulge your love of winter sports, but the delightful blend of Old World charm and modern environmental awareness puts Aspen high on the list of go-to destinations. The four mountain resorts of Aspen Snowmass cater to both skiers and snowboarders at any level of expertise. There are lessons available at each mountain; and whether you are an expert or will be schussing down a slope for the very first time, a seasoned instructor will be happy to give you some pointers. The little town of Aspen has its share of Hollywood celebrity visitors during the winter months, but you don't need film credits behind your name to enjoy the apres ski scene, shop at the trendy boutiques and galleries, and snuggle down in a comfy, warm bed at the end of a thrilling day.

Winter in Sarasota : Sunny Florida Beaches

Florida beaches are a terrific cure for the wintertime blues, and the white sand beaches of Sarasota County on the Gulf of Mexico really do the trick. The average high temperatures from December through February are in the low 70s, and it rarely gets below 50 degrees at night. Step away from the sand and surf long enough to enjoy the local food, which features fresh produce and seafood. When you’re looking for some Americana and culture, check out both the Ringling Circus Museum and the Museum of Art in downtown Sarasota . Animal lovers will be happy to hang out with the lions, tigers and bears (oh, my!) at the Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary.

The Top 3 Travel Destinations To Visit in 2024

Published: Jun 4, 2024 Modified: Jun 4, 2024 by Karen Kelly

Longwoods International American Travel Sentiment Study reports a record 93% of travelers are planning trips in the next six months.

Travel information site Places To Travel analyzed Google Trends data to establish the top vacation destinations of each state nationwide.

woman traveling

Whether you're eager to join the festivities or prefer to avoid the tourist hustle and bustle, three destinations top the list for summer getaways in 2024: Italy, Hawaii, and the Caribbean.

Italy topped searches in ten states, Hawaii lands in second place, the top search in nine states, and the Caribbean sits in third place, with seven states choosing it as their top destination.

Jason Wilson, CEO of Places to Travel, shares his advice. "Immerse yourself in Italy's impressive culinary landscape by embracing the local dining culture. Venture beyond tourist hubs and seek out authentic, Italian-run eateries where menus are in the local language. Take the time to enjoy multi-course meals and make the most of your experience with wine pairings, exploring regional specialties that define the unique tastes of each area."

According to Olive Oil Times , culinary tourism rose by 37% in 2023 and isn't slowing down. Whether visiting local farms, taking cooking classes, or tasting wine, countless culinary adventures await the boot-shaped country’s guests. Ahead of an Italy trip, experts encourage travelers to research their food culture, particularly surrounding coffee.

Tourists should anticipate added fees if they sit at a table to drink coffee, as most Italians stand while drinking their morning cappuccinos. Additionally, don't bother trying to order that cappuccino after 11 a.m. Dream Beans Coffee says Italian shops have a standard cappuccino cut-off time.

To-go cups are predominately American, so plan to drink morning cups of joe at the cafe. Italians enjoy fraternizing around food and drink and have long mealtimes, even in restaurants. The waiter only brings the bill when prompted.

The menu will bear a service fee, which everyone at the table must pay. This "coperto" fee is standard Italian practice, and is a flat rate charge for everything seen on the table, including any bread.

Lastly, tipping is optional in Italy. The waitstaff isn’t expecting a tip, but leaving one for exceptional service is OK.

Residents of New Jersey, California, Texas, Washington, and Alabama report Hawaii as their top destination. While Hawaii has 137 islands of varying sizes, in 2024, travelers typically stick to the islands of Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Lana’i, Maui, and the big island of Hawaii. Maui and O'ahu are notably popular among vacationers.

Home to most of Hawaii's population, O'ahu offers bustling city life and laid-back, relaxing surf towns. Travelers can explore and enjoy Waikiki’s countless beautiful beaches.

"It is not surprising that The Aloha State ranks as one of the top searched travel destinations among Americans," says frequent traveler and former Oahu resident Monica Fish. "This beautiful chain of Islands has rainforests, volcanoes, National Parks, deserts, and even the best beach in America."

"But the beauty and diversity of the Islands is just the start of what draws 10 million people a year. Hawaii blends East and West cultures with its welcoming Aloha spirit. No matter what travelers seek in their next adventure, foodies, families, couples, or groups can find it in Hawaii without needing a passport."

On the beautiful island of Maui, travelers can swim with sea turtles, see living reefs, and explore traditions and cultures belonging to the first Hawaiians. This island also offers opportunities for visitors with varied budgets.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority says the Maui wildfires negatively impacted Hawaii tourism. Those planning to visit Maui should practice patience as the island works to rebuild after the August 2023 fires. Support local businesses as much as possible. Avoid the especially affected Lahaina Town and abstain from taking photos. Show respect and stay clear of the area. Don't ask waitstaff or other service staff about the fire or their experience; guests should keep conversation light-hearted. Ask locals about hiking, surfing, snorkeling, parasailing, skydiving, helicopter tours, and whale watching.

Island Overview

The Hawaiian islands are unique, lush destinations with plenty to do . Guests can:

  • Check out the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
  • Swim and sunbathe on a Black-Sand Beach.
  • Savor the Islands’ fresh seafood offerings.
  • Stargaze at the top of Mauna Kea.
  • Trek through Twin Falls.

The Caribbean

The beautiful islands of the Caribbean, some of which travelers don't need a passport to see, ranked No. 3. Guests from Tennessee, Louisiana, Oregon, Utah, and Nevada revealed that the Caribbean is their ideal vacation destination.

Wilson reminds travelers to pack for the occasion.

"When gearing up for a Caribbean getaway, ensure your suitcase includes essentials tailored to the tropical climate. Think lightweight clothing crafted from breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Consider packing comfortable shorts, breezy T-shirts, sundresses, and lightweight pants to easily navigate the tropical weather."

Remember that the Caribbean has only two seasons: wet and dry. The dry season lasts from December through April, while the wet season lasts from May through November.

Seasons aside, take the time to research which Caribbean island you want to visit. Each island offers a unique experience that you will want to explore fully.

No matter what corner of the world beckons, make the time to go. Dream big, begin budgeting, do your research, and plan accordingly to make this travel season the best yet.

Escape Cancun crowds: 8 quieter Mexico beach towns for your next vacation

seasonal tourist destinations

  • Cancun is one of the world’s top tourist destinations, but there are a plethora of other, less popular Mexican beach towns just waiting to enchant travelers.
  • From charming surf towns to snorkeling along sea turtles, travelers should explore the diverse beauty of the rest of Mexico’s expansive coastline.
  • With no shortage of warm weather, sun and surf throughout Mexico, these destinations offer a quieter, less crowded experience.

Cancun reigns as one of the world’s top tourist destinations, and there’s no mystery why. The Caribbean Sea-adjacent locale has a myriad of sprawling beach resorts, clear turquoise waters and a vibrant nightlife. In 2023, Cancun welcomed over 21 million tourists .

While Cancun is beautiful and lively, there are a plethora of other, less popular Mexican beach towns just waiting to enchant travelers. From charming surf towns to snorkeling along sea turtles, travelers should explore the diverse beauty of the rest of Mexico’s expansive coastline.

With no shortage of warm weather, sun and surf throughout Mexico, these destinations offer a quieter, less crowded experience than enjoying Cancun alongside 30 million other tourists.

Far Homes spotted hidden gems across Mexico’s coast, looking at the destinations’ natural beauty, recreational activity offerings, safety and accessibility to learn and experience the local culture. To assess each town’s safety ratings, Far Homes released a report looking at crime statistics from data by the Executive Secretary of the National Security System. While some of these spots are known to attract tourists, they’re nowhere near as saturated as Cancun or Cabo.

Here are eight under-the-radar beach towns in Mexico to consider adding to your travel list.

Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

Located about an hour from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita perfectly balances bustling and mellow energy. “Sayulita is a fun little town full of eclectic restaurants and shops,” said Gene Alvarez, a local real estate agent from Net Real Estate who works with Far Homes. “With several great surf breaks and a laid-back atmosphere, it attracts surfers, backpackers, and bohemians.” It’s easy to get around for travelers not well-versed in Spanish, and many people rent mopeds or golf carts to cruise around the town. While the main beach in town, Playa Sayulita, can be crowded for both surfers and beachgoers, travelers can head north to the neighboring village of Playa San Pancho for quieter, more serene beaches.

Fly into Cancun Airport and head about three hours south to Akumal for a quieter escape from Cancun and Tulum. Scoring high with Far Homes for its natural beauty, Akumal has become more known among travelers for its pristine beaches and lush jungles. Must-dos in Akumal include snorkeling with sea turtles in the clear waters of the marine protected area of Half Moon Bay and swimming in the enclosed cenote Yal-Ku Lagoon, said local real estate agent Rob Kinnon from BuyPlaya. Just 15 minutes south is the famous Tulum Archaeological Site, where Mayan ruins made of limestone sit perched upon a cliff.

Puerto Escondido

Located in the Pacific Ocean-facing state of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is a rising destination for its world-class surfing breaks and easy-going lifestyle. Travelers can fly directly to Puerto Escondido International Airport, less than two miles from town. “From the trendy bars of Zicatela to the laid back vibes of La Punta, the town has something for everyone,” said local real estate agent Jon Ferioli from Bayside Real Estate. “And with nods from international magazines, Puerto Escondido is quickly becoming the go-to spot for digital nomads seeking inspiration and connection.” The town scored high for its activities offerings. Even if you don’t want to brave the often powerful waves, travelers can go on crocodile boat tours through the mangroves, witness the glowing bioluminescent plankton in two of the nearby lagoons at night, or visit Casa Wabi, a contemporary art and architecture museum.

Isla Holbox

If you’re really itching to escape the crowds, head to Isla Holbox, a 26-mile-long car-free island located right off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. While the island has grown in popularity and therefore development, it still offers travelers a secluded beachside retreat. Travelers can wander the streets, which are paved in sand, barefoot or in golf carts – the main mode of transportation on the skinny island. To get there, travelers fly to Cancun International Airport then travel by car for two hours to Chiquila to board a 15-minute ferry ride to the island. While it may take more effort to visit Isla Holbox over Cancun or Cabo, it’s well worth it. The resort town ranks high for natural beauty, including bioluminescent lagoons and whale shark tours, and safety.

Those seeking out the sun and sand will find Huatulco to be paradise with its 36 beaches and nine bays, and endlessly sunny weather. Less developed than Puerto Vallarta and Cancun, the small resort town offers activities like kayaking, hiking waterfalls or scuba diving, and is bordered by the Huatulco National Park. Of course, travelers can just relax on the beach as well. To get there, travelers can fly into Bahias de Huatulco International Airport, a short hour-and-a-half flight from Mexico City. “The international airport is only 10 minutes away, and the area attracts tourists looking for a more authentic Mexican experience and small-town feeling,” said Brent May, founder and CEO of Bayside Real Estate.

Located on the Pacific coast in Oaxaca, Zipolite’s former hippie culture is still retained with its laidback, rustic charm and a focus on eco-tourism. The community evolved around a hippie beach culture and has now become known for its excellent restaurants, bars, trendy boutique hotels, and low-key party culture,” said May. Over an hour’s drive from Puerto Escondido International Airport, the town scored high for activities and safety, and there are not as many tourist traps as in the more developed parts of Mexico. The massive Zipolite beach remains Mexico’s only legal nude beach, but there’s also a western end known for surfing and a small eastern bay called Playa del Amor that's known among the LGTBTQ+ community. “

This sleepy fishing village of Mahahual has grown in popularity among travelers, thanks partly to cruise ships. However, it still has much to offer travelers, ranking high for culture and safety by Far Homes. “This charming coastal town is best explored by bicycle,” said Gaby Ortiz, sales manager at Maya Ocean, a local real estate broker. “As you pedal through its scenic streets, you can lose track of time, immersed in the natural beauty and tranquility of your surroundings.” To get to Mahahual, travelers can fly into Chetumal International Airport and drive for about two hours. Travelers eager to experience vibrant marine life will find Mahahual to be the perfect destination. Spanning nearly 72 miles, the largest barrier reef system in Mexico and the Caribbean, Banco Chinchorro, is just an hour-long boat ride away. The UNESCO biosphere reserve is home to coral, American crocodiles, rays, turtles, nurse sharks and even sunken ships. On land, travelers can visit the Museum of Costa Maya and the Chacchoben Mayan ruins to learn more about local history and culture.

Todos Santos

About an hour’s drive from Los Cabos International Airport on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Todos Santos is known as a haven for artists and creatives as well as its colonial architecture. Nestled between the coast and the desert, the town ranked highly for natural beauty, safety and culture with Far Homes. If travelers venture away from the bustling town center – home to boutique galleries, shops and restaurants – they can go surfing at the nearby Playa Los Cerritos or hike the coast of Punta Lobos. “At one time a small fishing village, Todos Santos now boasts several chic hotels and world-class dining, but it hasn’t lost its indie soul. Make sure to stop at Jazamango for a true Todos Santos dining experience,” said Nancy Costa, a local real estate agent with Costa Cabo Realty.

The data, which was based on Chase cardmember spending, found that London , Rome, and Paris were still the most-booked cities among vacationers. However, rising prices due to inflation continue to hinder plans. Last year, Virtuoso revealed that average rates for luxury hotels across Europe had surpassed $1,700 a night—a 69 percent leap from the average $979 per night people were shelling out in 2019.

At the same time, severe weather also shifted travel patterns, and this year is no different. In 2023, the continent was hit by flooding, wildfires, droughts, and the warmest year on record. “Last summer, Europe was so very crowded, on top of being unbelievably hot,” added Belles. Travelers are now seeking out cooler locations, even if that means heading further north. Data from Virtuoso recorded a 33 percent uptick in Netherlands bookings, a 31 percent increase in trips to Austria, and a 26 percent spike in bookings to Germany .

“Don’t worry about Italy, it’s going to be fine,” Belles explained. “But other parts of Europe are starting to attract significant numbers.”

Vacationing in a Caribbean paradise can range from being quite economical to being extremely expensive. The good news is that with a little research, planning and creativity, you can enjoy an affordable Caribbean vacation in many beautiful destinations. Here are some of the places where you can vacation for about $2,000 (or less) per week.

1. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an economical vacation destination for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s a U.S. territory, so you can skip the exchanges and don’t need a passport. Second, the island boasts a great deal of public beaches, which means you don’t have to book a fancy resort to enjoy many of the island’s natural attractions. Plus, coming from the East Coast of the U.S. and select destinations in Latin America, you’ll find reasonable flights. Plus, you can use public transit, ride-sharing, or smaller private car rental companies that offer cheaper prices.

2. The Dominican Republic

Like Puerto Rico, certain areas of the Dominican Republic have many public beaches and natural attractions like waterfalls and caves, which don’t require you to book an expensive resort hotel. However, to pull this off, you’re better off avoiding areas like Punta Cana since this region has more expensive resorts and hotels. Check out budget-friendly destinations like Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete, where you’ll find inexpensive accommodations and dining options with activities like surfing and kiteboarding.

Cancun and Playa del Carmen are attractive destinations for budget-conscious travelers desiring a Caribbean experience without the high costs typically associated with island vacations. Here, you’ll find your food budget stretches further due to an abundance of local food sources and local eateries. Though you can certainly book all-inclusive resorts, Airbnbs in the area can be as low as $40 per night for 2 adults during the low season, making a two-week stay well under $1,000.

Vacationing economically in the Bahamas is entirely possible if you’re willing to take another route to this destination. One of the most cost-effective ways to travel to the Bahamas is by booking a cruise. Several inexpensive cruise lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, with frequent departures from ports in Florida, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando. These cruises often offer package deals that include accommodations, meals, and entertainment, providing excellent value for money.

5. U.S. Virgin Islands

In the the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can enjoy budget-friendly vacation options due to duty-free shopping and minimal travel costs since, like Puerto Rico, they’re a U.S. territory. Of all the islands, St. Croix is likely the most affordable because it’s bigger, and there are more options for lodging and dining. The bonus of visiting these Caribbean islands is that you can usually island hop via ferries and planes, giving you more bang for your vacation buck. Though you can stay in the USVI for your island-hopping adventures, there are also options for day trips to the nearby British Virgin Islands .

6. Colombia

Colombia’s Caribbean coast offers plenty of affordable vacation options without the hefty price tag of an island vacation. Cartagena is a popular destination that gives you access to a beautifully preserved colonial city, picturesque beaches and a vibrant cultural scene. Like other places on this list, you can visit many of the public beaches while renting our Airbnbs, which can be as low as $40 a night for two guests. From here, you can also visit the Palomino River area, which also features plenty of affordable lodging and dining options.

Belize is known for its value. This Central American nation bordering the Caribbean Sea offers beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine, and a rich cultural scene for much less than the prices of a typical island vacation. People enjoy natural attractions such as the Great Blue Hole, extensive coral reefs, Mayan ruins, and national parks. If you book far enough in advance, you should also be able to get reasonably-priced flights from the U.S., too.

This Seaside City Was Just Named the Most Relaxing in the World

Take a deep breath and chill out.

seasonal tourist destinations

f11photo/Getty Images

The majority of people — 59 percent — travel to "relax," according to a 2021 study by The Vacationer . It may sound like an obvious conclusion, but it still bears repeating. And since "relaxing" is the aim of many it makes sense that PayingTooMuch , a travel insurance company, would want to discover the most relaxing cities in the world.

In April, the company shared the results of its study analyzing and ranking the most "chilled-out cities in the world," which it created by measuring everything from noise and light pollution in 50 cities, each destination's number of walking trails, their happiness scores, and the quality of green spaces. After looking at all these metrics, the team named Syndey, Australia , as the most chilled out in the world.

"Maybe it’s the sunshine, or maybe it’s just the Australian way of living, but Sydney is also home to some very happy residents," the findings shared. "The city has been given a happiness score of 1,567 out of 2000, the fourth-highest score in the study." It added that Syndey is also home to the most walking trails of all destinations in the study, including the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, "where you can spend the day walking between several beautiful beaches." It's also home to nearly 400 parks and plenty of green spaces to enjoy.

Vienna, Austria, came in second thanks to having the lowest noise and light pollution score of any city, along with having lots of "high-quality green spaces."

"While Vienna doesn’t have a huge number of walking trails (41) or parks (172), the quality of its green spaces has been given a score of 84 — the joint second highest in the study," the findings noted. "For some of the most scenic hiking near the city, the Vienna Mountains are around an hour away. This area offers plenty of trails that take in sweeping valleys, lush forests, and impressive mountain ridges."

These destinations were joined by another Australian city, Melbourne, in third, which came with a higher-than-average happiness score, Honolulu in fourth thanks to its 75 walking trails, and Amsterdam in fifth thanks also to its high happiness score.
