Ten States. One River.
Fall color hotspots.
Friday, October 13, 2017
Peak fall colors are arriving in the northern states along the Mississippi River. The Great River Road will take you through the heart of this splendor, passing some spectacular lookouts along the way. See a listing of scenic overlooks here . And here are some of the spots where fall colors are spectacular this month.
Garvin Heights Park, Winona, Minnesota
Take the mile and a half road up the bluff side to get to the scenic overlook of Winona and all its beautiful fall colors. This is an ideal place for a picnic on a warmer day. Hikers can explore beautiful trails that trace the ledges of the bluffs. Or bring your bike and try to bike up the bluff – it’s such a challenging ride that Tour de France winner Greg LeMond trained here!
Buena Vista Park, Trail & Overlook , Alma, WI
This great spot overlooking the Mississippi is located 30 minutes north of Winona. Better Homes & Gardens Magazine named this one of the river valley’s “finest natural balconies.” The lookout towers 500 feet above tree-lined Alma and the Mississippi River Valley. Watch the barges and boats travel through the lock & dam, do some birdwatching, watch the sun set over the river!
Falconer Vineyards, Red Wing, MN
Here you can enjoy a glass of wine with your fall colors. There are more than a dozen varieties of wines to choose from, including whites, reds, rosé, dessert wines. The winery overlooks a gorgeous vineyard and is nestled in the bluff valleys, surrounded by beautiful fall colors. Stay for the sunset here – the bistro offers pizza for dinner!
Mt. Hosmer Park, Lansing, Iowa
This park is located on a bluff that towers 450 feet above Lansing. It offers a panoramic overlook of 50 miles of the Mississippi River Valley and its fall foliage. There’s also some beautiful hiking and biking trails here. While in Lancing, check out one of the newest Great River Road Interpretive Center – the Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center .
Fenelon Place Elevator, Dubuque, Iowa
Here you’ll find the world’s shortest, steepest elevator ride. The elevator was originally built to help people who lived in the bluffs get home more quickly than driving their horse and buggy. The ride is about 300 feet long but takes you 189 feet up. Below you’ll see a spectacular view of Dubuque’s historic business district, the Mississippi River and three states!

10 Favorite Fall Foliage Itineraries
At Home and Abroad
Small ship cruise vacations.
As the cruise season begins to draw to a close, the fall foliage season begins its annual appearance in the North, slowly inching southward with the dimming Autumn light. The magical transformation occurs, not quite like clockwork, but close. Mother Nature does keep her own schedule. One thing is for sure though, it is many people’s favorite time of year. A sea of green is seemingly changed overnight into a world of sparkling oranges and golds. With it comes a bite of chill in the air, pumpkins are on everyone’s doorsteps, people don their plaid wool scarfs and drink hot lattes and spiced teas, and everyone seems happy and ready for the change. This can be the perfect time to be on a cruise or a tour to take in the brilliant foliage and enjoy the cooler temperatures and harvest festivities.
The Hudson River Valley flows through upstate New York, lined with an unusual combination of historic homes and simple farmsteads. The entire Northeast region is known for its beautiful sugar maples, and the Hudson River banks are equally as beautiful – a rainbow of yellows, oranges, and reds. Excursions to places up on the hillside such as to West Point Academy, artist Thomas Cole’s house, or a magnificent mansion such as Lyndhurst will each offer outstanding overlook views.

Western Germany and the Rhine River Valley are known for their multitude of castles – you won’t have to go far to find amazing views. The charms of Germany do not end there – with half-timbered medieval villages, stone buildings lined encased with vines turning red, and cobbled streets curving around the bend lined with small cottages leading to the Oktoberfest celebrations. Autumn is the perfect time to visit this region!

4. Columbia River
The banks of the Columbia River are awash in a sea of gold in the Autumn months of late September to early November. Big leaf maples, larches, and cottonwoods turn gold, lighting up the hillsides set off by the dark green of the evergreen firs. Visitors on cruises departing Portland might enjoy the opportunity to visit the world-famous Portland Japanese Gardens, known for their brilliant Japanese maple collection. The wide variety of trees that grow in the Pacific Northwest put on quite a show. You might even sail past a vineyard with its golden rows of vines, or a cherry orchard putting on a show.

When you think of fall color and fall celebrations, you may not immediately think of Northern France, but this area is a glorious place to be between late September and early November! The trees are at their autumnal best, and the French love their pumpkins – and indeed, any fall vegetable. How romantic to see a chateau decorated with the fall harvest and delight in a long path lined with fall foliage trees, as the French do so well. Some Useful Information
Blocked streets can cause delays.
We appreciate railroads and the hard work of their crews, but travelers need to be aware of possible driving delays due to Dubuque streets being blocked by trains. If you are approaching our location by driving northbound on US Hwy 61/151, do not take the White Street or 9th Street Exits to get to us. Both of these exits cross railroad tracks, and trains can sometimes block street traffic as long as 30 minutes. That could cause you to miss your cruise!
Instead, continue north and take the Kerper Blvd Exit. At the traffic light, turn right, then turn left onto 16th Street. Be in the right lane, and turn right onto Admiral Sheehy Dr, and then take the next right turn to arrive in our parking lot. On this route, the road takes you over the railroad tracks avoiding the possibility of being delayed by a train!
Please tell us that you are bringing the little ones.
Babies are people too.
We happily let children 3 years of age and younger take a ride free of charge, but they are counted as a passenger just like paying customers. So, when you make reservations, please inform us if you have that little bundle of joy so we can add them to our passenger list!

Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.
Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.
New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans
Length: Eight days Price: Starts at $3,999 per person
If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.
2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.
Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis
Length: Nine days Price: Starts at $4,299 per person
Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.
2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.
America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans
Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $12,999 per person
This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.
Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.
2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.
Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.

3 River Cruises for Fall Foliage
- September 4, 2022
It’s still plenty warm outside, but you can feel the slightest hints of fall starting to settle in. School is back in session, and the nights are cool and clear. I think it’s the best time of year when you can enjoy a special look at nature’s glory as the warm days usher in the winter season. When many think of fall, they think of a road trip through one of our country’s mountain regions, like the Blue Ridge Mountains or Skyline Drive.
But what about a cruise? Imagine it: Floating down a river on a comfortable cruise relaxing as you go through gorgeous waterways, stopping at various cities and towns. A big benefit of these smaller ships is that they can reach destinations/ports that mega cruise ships can’t and are much less crowded. While you may go to see the stunning fall colors, you’ll enjoy the rich history, culture, and scenery along the way. Here are a few to consider:
Hudson River Cruises
Surrounded by the Catskill Mountains, the Hudson River is rich in both history and beauty, a fun experience for nature and history lovers alike. The cities and towns along the river date back to Dutch and English rule and feature some of the most magnificent architecture in America. Expect to be awed by historic sites such as the Vanderbilt Mansion, the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and so much more. Love small-town charm? One of the stops includes the riverside town of Sleepy Hollow, made famous by the great American writer Washington Irving. So make sure to bring your camera to capture the beautiful colors and scenery.
Fall Foliage on the Mississippi
The American Queen, one of the largest steamboats ever built, is your vessel for this autumn adventure through America’s heartland. You’ll begin in St. Louis and start your journey north toward St. Paul, MN. There are many historic and cultural stops along the way. From Mark Twain’s boyhood home in Hannibal, MO, to the “Masterpiece on the Mississippi” in Dubuque, IA, you’ll marvel at the richness and depth that make this region one of America’s greatest attractions.
Columbia and Snake Rivers
Once on board, you’ll experience the rugged beauty of the legendary Columbia and Snake Rivers during the peak autumn season. Departing from Portland, OR, or Clarkston, WA, this cruise takes you on an adventure that includes history, food, and local cuisine. Explore the pathways of Lewis & Clark, and soak in views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St. Helens. As you head down the Snake River, you’ll marvel at Hells Canyon, known for its untouched wilderness and awe-inspiring scenery. Of course, throughout Oregon and Washington, you’ll find delicious food and wine throughout the many towns, including the Columbia River Valley wine region.

We have such beautiful fall foliage in the Sonoma County wine country in Northern California I don’t usually make a special trip anywhere. The grapes turn different colors depending on the varietal, and the trees all join in the mix, making it a spectacular array of color along the Gravenstein Highway through Sebastopol and across the Dry Creek Valley through Healdsburg. I would love to take the cruise on the Columbia River though; we have driven along it and it is rugged and beautiful all at once. Thanks for the inspiration!

7 best US river cruises
Whether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.
Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.
Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.
American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise
From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.
In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.
While cruising, you'll enjoy nightly entertainment that celebrates the region's musical heritage. American Cruise Lines offers this itinerary on four ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. 5 Must-Take Drives To Experience Autumn's Glory Across The South
Jessica Farthing writes about food and has a busy speaking schedule teaching aspiring authors to do the same. She's published in numerous publications, tackling a range of subject related to the culinary world.
Blue Ridge Parkway
Talladega scenic byway, foothills parkway, natchez trace parkway, dragon eyes.
The South celebrates the change of season from summer to fall with a glorious display of color. Maple trees turn fiery red and orange, and flowering dogwood produces bright berries for the squirrels and birds to store for the winter ahead. When the weather cools, nothing beats wrapping up in your favorite sweater and heading out on a drive to take in the vivid fall color.
When the autumnal equinox or first day of fall happens in September, days become shorter and nights longer. The absence of a long span of sunshine is actually what causes the leaves to change color, not the cool temperatures themselves. A shorter daytime period is the signal that tells the plants to get ready for winter. Because the time period can fluctuate, it’s not the easiest to predict the best time to take a fall foliage drive. There are predications, but it’s best to check local information as you plan. Here are some ways to view the best fall displays in the South , and our favorite scenic drives.
Virginia and North Carolina
The Blue Ridge Parkway winds through 469 miles of mountain vistas through several states, spanning the distance from the Shenandoah National Park in Rockfish Gap, Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Cherokee, North Carolina. Along the way, drivers can take in the awe-inspiring views of over 280 scenic overlooks, but only around speeds of 45 miles per hour, allowing plenty of time for fall gazing.
The time to visit varies with elevation, giving a lot of opportunity to see autumn’s finest show. Some stops of note are the Purgatory Mountain Overlook in Virginia, which you can view via a virtual camera here and the historic Mabry Mill , with Sunday afternoon music, dancing, and food. Mount Pisgah, with an elevation of 5,721 feet above sea level, starts early with fall color; the area around James River sits lower at 600 feet above sea level, making it the last to change.
Traversing over the higher elevations of Mount Cheaha, the Talladega Scenic Byway is Alabama’s shining example of a picturesque drive. The 29-mile route offers a view over the Appalachian Mountains, covered in color in the fall. At the summit of the drive, the open air Bunker Observation Tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, offers a panoramic long-range view of the mountains.
Nestled at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park , the 71 mile Foothills Parkway gives views of the mountains and the Tennessee Valley on either side. It took a while to complete: construction started in the 1960s and the final portion, known as the "missing link," didn't open to the public until 2018. Look Rock has a gorgeous overlook with a short trail that leads to a picnic area—the perfect place to enjoy lunch while you’re out looking for crimson and yellow landscapes.
Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee
This scenic drive offers 444 miles of recreation and leaf gazing. There are three campgrounds available on the route, plus walks, hikes, and RV areas. Leaf changes usually happen in middle to late October at easy to find in places like the Little Mountain, Swan View, or Freedom Hills Overlooks.
Robbie Caponetto
For a more thrilling ridge, take this trip through the Southern Appalachian Mountains that passes through the beloved mountain towns of Blairsville and Helen . Well known to motorcyclists for its 715 curves spread over a 77-mile road, Dragon Eyes provides some serious long-range mountain glory. There’s even merch to prove you’ve made the challenging drive. Along the way, there are quaint towns, waterfalls and incredible state parks. Just don’t take your eye off the road.

BIG SAVINGS: 8 cruise lines that let kids sail free
Your itinerary may include a combination of ports across New England and Canada. Stops range from Boston to Bar Harbor in the U.S., and Halifax, Saint John, Charlottetown, and Quebec City in Canada. Feeling extra adventurous? Princess’s 17-day voyage out of Boston takes you on a round-trip sailing to Greenland.
2. Royal Caribbean
Whether you’re departing from Boston, Baltimore, or Cape Liberty (in New Jersey), Royal Caribbean has an array of New England and Canada itineraries. With sailings ranging from four to nine nights , there’s plenty of flexibility for those looking for a long weekend getaway and lengthier vacations. Maine, Nova Scotia, and Halifax are just some of the ports of call you might visit.
3. Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian’s New England and Canada cruise itineraries include sailings that stretch from Maine to Nova Scotia. Cruisers have a multitude of port options from which to depart, including Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Quebec City. Norwegian offers voyages ranging in length from five to eight days as well as from nine to 14 days. That allows you plenty of time to explore New England and the surrounding areas, whether your ship brings you to Boston, Bar Harbor, or Halifax.
4. American Cruise Lines
American Cruise Lines offers uniquely tailored New England cruises allowing passengers to explore various areas around New England and Canada in more detail. This way, you can head to the popular spots as well as some quieter destinations you might miss on the bigger cruise lines.
FALL SPLENDOR: 10 best New England fall foliage vacations for families
The line’s nine-day Maine Coast and Harbors cruise includes stops at Portland and Bangor as well as Boothbay Harbor, Castine, and days cruising along Maine’s coast. The Cape Codder cruise, lasting eight days, stops at Martha’s Vineyard, Provincetown, and Newport. And if you have the time, the 15-day Fall Foliage cruise is a good option for those wishing sail one way from Maine to New York.
5. Celebrity Cruises
Though Celebrity Cruises offers fewer New England cruises than some of its competitors, the ones it does offer are worth checking out if you’re interested in a long cruise. These are 10- or 11-night voyages sailing round-trip from Boston. Many of the ports of call are similar across these sailings, including Halifax, Charlottetown, Portland, and Quebec City.
6. Holland America
With cruises departing from Boston, Quebec City, and Montreal, Holland America’s New England and Canada cruises include popular ports of call in Nova Scotia and Maine. Shore excursions cater to all kinds of vacation types, from adventurous hikes around Acadia National Park to foodie walks through Saint John, New Brunswick.
RIDE THE RAILS: 10 best fall foliage train rides in the U.S.
Itineraries are available through mid-fall as well as spring and summer. Most of the line’s New England cruises vary in length from seven to 15 days, and there’s also an epic 25-day voyage that includes stops in Greenland and Iceland.
7. Oceania Cruises
If you’ve experienced New England cruises in the past and have visited the typical ports of call, you may want to consider a voyage aboard Oceania Cruises next. It has some unique ports of call you aren’t like to find with other cruise lines, including Baie-Comeau and Gaspe in Quebec; Martha’s Vineyard in Massachuetts; and Cortner Brook, Newfoundland.
FAMILY FUN: 10 best family vacation ideas for fall, according to travelers and experts
Oceania’s New England and Canada cruises depart in August, September, and October, and include one-way and round-trip itineraries out of New York, Boston, and Montreal. Sailings range from 10 to 12 days on the 1,200-passenger Allura, the 684-passenger Nautica, and the 684-passenger Insignia.
8. Seabourn Cruise Line
Choose Seabourn’s Canada and New England cruises for a yacht-like experience with smaller ships that pull out all of the stops. The majority of its regional itineraries sail out of Montreal and focus on Canadian ports with just a couple of stops in New England, including Boston and potentially Provincetown, Newport, or Martha’s Vineyard.
FALL GETAWAYS: 8 New England fall getaways that will charm the kids (and parents, too)
If you want a longer voyage along the East Coast, select itineraries that sail out of Montreal and go all the way to Miami. Those longer voyages stretch to 22 days. Ultra-intimate Canada and New England sailings on Seabourn Cruise Line are on the 229-passenger Seabourn Quest or the 229-passenger Seabourn Sojourn.
9. Regent Seven Seas Cruises
With four ports in New England and several more in Canada, Regent Seven Seas Cruises lets passengers see the highlights of the region with curated excursions. Stop in Martha’s Vineyard, Boston, Bar Harbor, or Portland to enjoy the sights and sounds of New England with their themed cruises. These include Lighthouses and Lobster Rolls, numerous fall foliage tours, and more. Most of these New England and Canada sailings are aboard the 744-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur or the 746-passenger Seven Seas Splendor.
10. Silversea Cruises
For another intimate New England cruising experience, consider Silversea Cruises. The line’s crew-to-guest ratio is nearly 1:1, and its small vessels can access ports that others can’t get to. Its 10- and 11-day itineraries include stops at ports such as Newport, Portland, and Quebec City.
11. Windstar Cruises
If your idea of a New England cruise also includes multiple stops in Canada as part of your journey, then you should look into Windstar Cruises . The small ship cruise line includes New England ports like Boston and Portland, but the majority of ports you’ll experience are in Canada. For example, its 11-day Southeast Canadian Explorations cruise stops at Halifax and Quebec City as well as lesser-visited destinations like Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, and Gaspé, Quebec.
12. Viking Cruises
Want a New England cruise that also includes a few palm trees? Viking Cruises is distinct in that its 15-day Canada and New England Scenic Shores cruise also brings passengers to Fort Lauderdale. So, if you’re interested in a one-way cruise that brings you somewhere a bit more tropical than New England, this might be the perfect itinerary for you . The journey begins in Montreal and stops in several Canadian ports along the way before visiting Bar Harbor, Portland, and Newport. It then continues down the East Coast to Florida. A reverse sailing from Florida to Canada is also available.
Viking also has 13-day Eastern Seaboard Discovery and Eastern Seaboard Explorer sailings, offering one-way voyages from Boston to Montreal. Viking’s New England itineraries sail on either the 930-passenger Viking Mars or the 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

5 Fall Foliage Mountain Destinations for Prime Leaf-Peeping
Discover favorite places for enjoying autumn landscapes.
Bobbi Dempsey,
Fall is the season when Mother Nature puts her most vibrant, richest colors on display. The stunning oranges, reds and yellows of the changing leaves inspire travel that lets you explore the outdoors. Heading to the mountains will give you the best panoramic views of these sensational landscapes.
According to AARP’s 2024 Travel Trends Survey , 63 percent of travelers 50-plus plan to travel only domestically this year, with personal vehicle the most popular mode of transportation. In addition, more travelers in this age group are planning to visit unique or off-the-beaten-path destinations than in the past, which makes mountainside locales with terrific leaf-peeping potential the perfect fall getaway choice.

Expedia notes that fall is a good time for bargain hunters who plan to fly to their destination, as airfare historically drops 10 percent compared to the summer months. Fall is also “shoulder season” for many destinations, with lower rates and thinner crowds than during peak season — yet with nice enough weather to still enjoy the outdoors. The Expedia Fall Travel Outlook predicts the lightest travel dates for fall will be the week of Nov. 10 and Mondays throughout the season. Below, we spotlight five impressive U.S. mountain region locations to enjoy fall foliage.
Tip: If you plan to visit a national park this fall, don’t forget about free entrance days , which include Sept. 28 (National Public Lands Day) and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day). Also, note that adults 62-plus, military, visitors with a permanent disability , and families with a fourth grader are eligible for a free or discounted America the Beautiful pass.
Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada
Lake Tahoe — encompassing a group of towns and small cities in California and Nevada — is divided into north and south regions. North Lake Tahoe has a quieter, more relaxed feel than South Lake Tahoe — one of Expedia’s top five trending domestic fall destinations, based on lodging search — which is busier and offers many nightlife and entertainment options. Some of the top spots for checking out colorful leaves include Hope Valley, Spooner Lake and the Taylor Creek Visitor Center.
Where to stay: Palisades Tahoe has eight outdoor hot tubs, rooms with mountain views, and an aerial tram ride that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the breathtaking panoramic landscapes. Coachman Hotel just finished a multimillion-dollar renovation and is within easy walking distance of both the Heavenly Mountain Resort and Lakeside Beach, a private beach accessible to hotel guests. Harveys Lake Tahoe has gambling, shows and restaurants — including the newly opened Wolf by Vanderpump, where you can enjoy one of the exclusive signature cocktails.

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Pigeon Forge is perhaps best known as the home of Dollywood — which many consider a must-visit attraction when you’re in the area. But it’s also where you can explore Great Smoky Mountains National Park , the most biodiverse park in the national park system (no entrance fee; parking tags — which start at $5 per day — are required for vehicles parking longer than 15 minutes). You can explore nature and take in the fall foliage and mountain vistas with your choice of hikes or drives.
Holland America Line
Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises
Where to stay: Staybridge Suites Pigeon Forge is a pet-friendly hotel with suites that include fully equipped kitchens and a complimentary hot breakfast buffet. Embassy Suites by Hilton Gatlinburg Resort is a 20-minute drive from Pigeon Forge, is close to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and boasts a resort-style pool with a slide and lazy river. Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort is Dollywood’s newest resort, where guests get priority access to its parks, among other exclusive perks, and many of the suites include balconies.
Shenandoah Valley, Virginia
The Shenandoah Valley runs between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains and is known for its beautiful landscapes and quaint small towns. Shenandoah County features an assortment of parks, the George Washington National Forest, hiking trails and great scenic drives. Shenandoah National Park (standard pass costs $15-$30) is among the top eight fall foliage destinations by search volume, according to Priceline. If you’re in the mood for a road trip , this is also where you can hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway — known as “America’s Favorite Scenic Drive” — which covers 469 miles of Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee (traveling near Pigeon Forge, one of the other destinations on our list).
Where to stay: Peaks of Otter Lodge is surrounded by the three Peaks of Otter in the Blue Ridge Mountains, providing mountain landscapes and easy access to hiking trails. Massanutten Resort caters to adventure lovers, with its indoor-outdoor water parks and adventure park. If you want to take a scenic drive along the West Virginia border, head a few hours southwest and stay at Mountain Lake Lodge, situated on a 2,600-acre nature preserve and recognizable to movie buffs as the resort where Dirty Dancing was filmed.
Stowe, Vermont
Stowe — which has proclaimed itself “fall’s color capital” — is also on Priceline’s list of top fall foliage destinations. The city’s terrain includes mountains, hillsides and valleys, so you’ll get different views depending on your exact location and the timing of your visit. In addition to the foliage display, fall in Stowe is a great time to paddle the river, bike the trails, do some fishing or attend a festival.
Where to stay: One of the area’s newest lodging options is Outbound Stowe, which has direct access to Stowe’s Recreation Path, fire pits for group gatherings and a variety of accommodation types including loft suites and cabins. If you like the serenity of alone time, AWOL Stowe is a peaceful retreat away from the crowds but still within a short distance of attractions. Field Guide Lodge, on the other hand, is centrally located in the middle of downtown and an easy walk from biking trails and shopping.
Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania
The Poconos are the perfect place for enjoying brilliant autumn colors because Pennsylvania has the longest and most diverse fall foliage season in the country. Jim Thorpe — a picturesque mountainside town known as “Little Switzerland of America” — is a popular spot that offers gorgeous views, train rides, whitewater rafting, museums and boutiques. If it rains and you need to stay indoors, you can hit the outlet stores or play the slots and see a show at the nearby casino resorts.
Where to stay: The Inn at Jim Thorpe boasts old-world charm, is within walking distance of shops, museums and the train station, and has onsite spa services. Skytop Lodge sits on top of a natural landscape spanning 5,500 acres and has a treetop adventure course, golf, tennis, boating and other outdoor activities. The Harry Packer Mansion Inn is an Italianate Victorian house that inspired Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion and is outfitted with period antiques and furnishings.

Cruiseclout score: 20.0, top u.s. spots for a fall foliage river cruise.
This is the second of a two-part series on Fall Foliage cruises. Also see:
- 10 places in Canada to see gorgeous fall foliage
As a native New Englander, I'll admit that we locals can be a bit blasé about the changing of the seasons. But for out-of-towners, there's no question that autumn is one of the best times of the year to visit the Northeast and take in the colorful foliage and cool, crisp air.
If you've been thinking about a vacation where you can experience the full majesty of the fall — whether it's Boston , the Maine coast or further afield — you should think about taking a fall foliage cruise. At the top of the list is American Cruise Lines , whose fleet of eight ships offer enticing fall foliage getaways in the Pacific Northwest, Northeast, Southeast and Midwest during late September and most of October.
What to expect on American Cruise Lines
Their modern fleet of paddlewheel riverboats and small coastal cruise ships all offer outside rooms that feature either a private balcony (veranda) or a large picture window, giving you nice sweeping views of the passing landscapes throughout your voyage. With typical cabin sizes around 300 square feet, including full-size bathrooms, you won't feel pinched for space.
One advantage of an American Cruise Lines voyage is that the ships are small and hold only around 100 passengers. The ships range in size from the petite sailing ship American Glory, with 48 guests, to the Queen of the Mississippi and American Pride , with 150 guests. (Fun fact: Most river cruise ships in Europe are the same dimensions so they can slip through the unforgiving locks on the Danube, Rhine and other rivers with only a few inches to spare on each side. Not so river cruise ships in the U.S. where the major rivers don't have locks.)
With limited space does come limited onboard amenities: There's no casino, no big stage production shows, no spa, fitness center or swimming pool. But what you get is generally first rate.
The cruise line's menus change daily and feature locally sourced ingredients, reflecting the regions of the country where you are sailing for a more authentic experience. Complimentary wine and beer are served at lunch and dinner, and there is a pre-dinner reception where guests can mingle each evening. Lectures by local experts are provided most days, focusing on the region's history and highlights of upcoming ports. At each port, a handful of shore excursions are available through the cruise line, or you could book a private tour to make the most of your time on shore.
If you're considering taking in the sights and smells of autumn on a river cruise in the U.S., here are some top options on where to go to catch glimpses of fall foliage.
Northeast: Sail through the tranquil Catskills
Ships: american star, independence, american glory.
There may be no place better to watch the seasons change than the Catskill Mountains region of New York state. Traveling on either the Independence or American Star, you'll leave on a seven-night cruise that takes you from the hustle and bustle of New York City to the solitude of middle and upper New York state. Along the way, not only can you admire the rich colors, but you'll also make stops in ports including West Point, home to the United States Military Academy, and the state capital of Albany. A stop in Sleepy Hollow (site of the classic short story by Washington Irving) as well as Catskill will allow you to tour quaint small towns or venture off to see the fall foliage in nearby parks and forests.
Other Northeast options include a Maine Coast Cruise from May to September; a Grand New England Cruise in June, and seven-day Lobster Cruises from Providence to Martha's Vineyard and other ports in May and June (sorry, no fall sailings).
Midwest: Sailings on Upper Mississippi
Ships: queen of the mississippi, america.
If you're looking for a classic U.S. river cruise experience, the Fall Foliage cruises down the Mississippi River on Queen of Mississippi or America in early October might be perfect for you. This quintessential American experience will bring you through parts of the heartland as you cruise through Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota on a seven night trek. Along with witnessing colorful changes in the leaves, you can also experience some of the heartlands most iconic landmarks. From the St Louis Arch and Riverwalk to historic homes and avenues of Dubuque, Iowa and St. Paul, MN, your fall foliage cruise down the Mississippi River will be rich with Victorian era charm as well as natural beauty.
Midwest: Sailings on Lower Mississippi
Ships: queen of the mississippi, america.
American River Cruises features a slew of Civil War cruises out of New Orleans and Memphis, Tenn., on the Queen of the Mississippi and its newest ship, America , from now through December. Cruise into the heart of Dixie on a grand paddlewheeler on an eight-day voyage while enjoying authentic Cajun cuisine, views of the Mississippi Delta and shore excursions to historic venues such as Vicksburg, Miss., site of one of the most significant battles of the Civil War. Meet Southern Belles in period dress before touring historic Oak Alley planation and see attractions such as the interactive Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge, La.
Southeast: South Carolina to Florida
Cruises on American Star , Independence and American Glory this fall include "Historic South and Golden Isles Cruise" as well as cruises to Florida, Chesapeake Bay and small towns along the Eastern Seaboard. The Historic South cruise treks down a protected network of bays, rivers and canals that are home to iconic, storied cities such as Savannah, Charleston, Jekyll Island and Beaufort, S.C. In between ports you'll pass through expansive wildlife refuges and remote wilderness areas. These are sailings that nature and history lovers should enjoy.
Pacific Northwest: Columbia & Snake rivers
Ships: queen of the west, american pride.
For those looking for a little more adventure, you can head out west to Seattle to enjoy the changing of seasons in the Pacific Northwest with a Puget Sound and San Juan Islands Fall Foliage cruise. With the Olympic Mountains as your backdrop, you might also catch a glimpse of some wildlife, including whales and bald eagles. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these moments, including one of the most photographed areas of the Northwest, Deception Point. Stopping in Victoria , British Columbia, you will want to visit Butchart Gardens with its vibrant color displays and explore the Inner Harbor to see the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel and the British Parliament buildings, which take on a special beauty when lit up at night.
Other choices
You'll also catch some fall foliage on cruises out of Seattle to Alaska's Inside Passage on American Spirit , though those voyages are more about seeing wildlife than catching fall colors in the evergreen-heavy Northwest.
Planning your trip
Itineraries for 2016 and 2017 are available and filling up, so now is the best time to start planning your fall foliage river cruise. I'm looking forward to trying out one of these ships myself to garner a new perspective.
