5 Incredible Outlander Tours in Scotland + Filming Locations (For 2024)

Looking for the best Outlander tours in Scotland? Then you’ve come to the right place.

As a Scotland native, I’ve explored the charming Scottish villages and magical castles seen in the popular TV show many times, usually on fun day trips.

Spending time wandering around the lovely village of Falkland , and stumbling across the fountain where Jamie’s ghost looks up at Claire, is still one of my favourite memories!

The same can be said for Culross, which is one of my favourite places to visit in Fife . This century’s old village is most recognisable as the village of Cranesmuir in the parish of Castle Leoch in the Highlands. And imposing Blackness Castle too, used to portray Fort William in the show.

So I know exactly how beautiful, and special, these locations are!

Quick Book: My Top Pick of Outlander Tours in Scotland

Outlander 1 Day Experience from Edinburgh : popular and highly rated day trip, see the most iconic locations on the this Outlander tour. Plus, it’s the best priced option on our list.

From Edinburgh: Outlander Experience 2-Day Tour : if you have more time, then this is the best option. Stay in Inverness and visit the ancient Clava Cairns; the inspiration behind Craigh na Dun.

If you’re a true Outlander fan, then visiting the iconic places made famous by the TV show is a must during your Scotland trip.

Many of the best tours also double up as wonderful day trips from Edinburgh and will enrich your Scottish capital experience. From historic castles and palaces to ancient villages, these tours will genuinely transport you through the ages to another time.

That being said, if you prefer to do things in your own time, it’s possible to visit Outlander locations on your own itinerary. Keep in mind that the main locations from the show are spread between Midlothian and Fife and you’ll want to rent a car to move between them.

Outlander filming locations in Scotland

So, which Outlander filming locations can you expect to see on these tours?

Falkland, Fife: where Claire's story begins and where the ghost of Jamie looks up at Claire's room.

Midhope Castle, Midlothian: Jamie’s home Lallybroch.

Blackness Castle, Midlothian: Fort William in the show and Black Jack Randall’s HQ.

Culross, Fife: many locations including Cranesmuir in Castle Leoch parish and Claire’s herb garden.

Clava Cairns, Highlands: the inspiration behind Craigh na Dun.

Linlithgow Palace, West Lothian: most famous as Wentworth Prison.

Doune Castle, Perthshire: the location for Castle Leoch.

To make your travel planning easier, I’ve brought together the best Outlander tours in Scotland. Each is highly rated with travellers and incredibly popular with fans of the show.

Each have top-notch reviews, plus excellent flexibility - you can reserve your spot today and pay later, or cancel up to 24 hours before if you change your mind.

Also, with these tours you’ll enjoy expert knowledge from your guide, who’ll also chat you through the history and landscapes of each location. Personally, I find this adds to the experience and I learn so much more.

1. From Edinburgh: The Outlander 1-Day Experience

Best for: spending time at the main show locations in Midlothian and Fife.

Leaves from: Edinburgh.

If you’re looking to visit the most iconic filming locations, then this Outlander tour from Edinburgh is, I think, the best choice.

This tour is a popular one and has excellent ratings. Not only have travellers loved the experience, but you can tell from the reviews that the tour guides are genuinely knowledgeable.

This tour leaves from Edinburgh city centre and lasts for a whole day. Best of all, the locations on the tour are all reasonably close together, which means less driving and more time exploring.

You’ll get to visit the most iconic spots from Outlander, including Midhope Castle (Lallybroch), Blackness Castle (Black Jack Randall’s HQ), Culross (16th-century Cranesmuir), and Falkland (Claire & Frank’s honeymoon location).

2. From Edinburgh: Outlander Adventure Day Tour

Best for: the main locations plus travel further north to Doune Castle/Castle Leoch.

This full-day tour is another excellent option for your trip to Scotland, especially if you’re looking for Outlander tours from Edinburgh.

Leaving from Edinburgh centre, you’ll leave the city and visit incredible locations from the show, like Midhope Castle (Jamie’s home) and Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison).

This tour travels a little further north than others on the list, also taking you to Doune Castle (aka Castle Leoch).

Finally, spend time exploring pretty Culross village, where you can visit the palace and Claire’s herb garden.

As you travel, your driver will give you the real life history of the landmarks and stories from Outlander - the tour guides in particular get excellent reviews, so you know it’s going to be a great experience.

3. From Glasgow: Outlander Adventure 1-Day Tour

4. From Edinburgh: Outlander Experience 2-Day Tour

Best for: travellers with extra time and the Clava Cairns/Craigh na Dun.

You could say this is the ultimate Outlander tour . But with it lasting longer than the other, you’ll need to be in Edinburgh for longer than a few days.

On this Outlander tour, you’ll travel much further north and experience additional Outlander filming locations. Plus, see more of the landscapes that inspired the story. Not only do you see more, you’ll also get to stay overnight in the Highland city of Inverness.

On day one, visit most iconic filming locations, including Midhope Castle (Lallybroch), Blackness Castle (Black Jack Randall’s HQ), and Doune Castle (Castle Leoch).

Next, drive north through stunning Glencoe and arrive in the city of Inverness for your overnight stay.

Your final locations are the historic villages of Falkland and Culross, perhaps the most iconic locations from the first season of Outlander.

5. From Edinburgh: Outlander, Palaces, and Jacobites Tour

Best for : history fans and an extra iconic location

If you’re looking to add an extra stop overlooking the Firth of Forth, then this unique Outlander tour is a good option.

Lasting a full day and leaving from Edinburgh, you’ll visit Outlander’s best known locations like Midhope Castle, Blackness Castle, Culross Palace, and lovely conservation village Falkland. With excellent reviews, you know you’re in experienced hands on this tour.

With an additional stop in lovely South Queensferry, it’s the only tour to offer unbeatable views over Scotland’s famous bridges.

If you’re worried about your guide just reeling off memorized Outlander facts then fear not.

The guides on this tour are serious Outlander fans too.

Expect to be taken all over Edinburgh’s Old Town, with stops at filming locations such as Giles Cathedral, Bakehouse Close and more.

Feel free to grab as many photos as you like while your guide regales you with stories and facts related to your favorite show and its Edinburgh locations.

On top of this, your guide will share their detailed knowledge regarding what life was like before and after the Jacobite Rebellion – the period in which Outlander is set.

At just an hour and a half long, this tour should suit those of you looking to explore Edinburgh’s Old Town whilst familiarizing yourselves with both its history and links to Outlander.

This final tour on our list is another brilliant option if you’re looking to get outside Edinburgh and see key Outlander attractions.

Of course, you’ll have stops along the road to check out palaces and castles like Midhope and Linlithgow among others.

At each stop, you’ll have time to explore and take photos.

Outside of these, you can expect to check out Culross and Falkland too.

The tour ends at South Queensferry, a small town close to Midhope Castle that is perfect for photo opportunities.

You can expect an expert guide to accompany you the whole way, they will ensure that there’s never a dull moment, filling you in on Outlander facts and alerting you to the historical significance of the sites visited.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced day where you can check out several locations while learning and snapping plenty of photos, I would highly recommend this tour.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

What do our customers say?

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

Highly recommend Nordic Visitor

This is our second tour with Nordic Visitor. Agents used before the tour were always very prompt with responses to our questions. During the tour, we found the accommodation perfect, guide very informative and friendly, and the driver got used to where we needed to go without any problems. We would definitely use Nordic Visitor again!

Smooth experience

Throughout the years we have travelled a lot, but never with a group tour. This trip was our first time and it did not disappoint. The tour guide, the bus driver, our fellow passengers, the weather, accommodation, variety of activities, and how smoothly everything went makes me question why we never toured like this before!

Amazing experience!

We had an amazing experience with Nordic Visitor! Our guides, Richard and Tim, were organised, knowledgeable, and very friendly! You can tell quality and customer satisfaction are very important. We will be back!

An unforgettable holiday

It was an unforgettable holiday. They took care of everything, and we got to wonder and explore with little hassle. If you want to visit Scotland (or anywhere else Nordic Visitor has tours) they are the way to do it. Already talking about our next adventure with Nordic Visitor.

An indescribably fantastic experience!

We are two middle-aged women who had never been to the UK before. My sister-in-law always wanted to go to Scotland, so I started researching and came upon Nordic Visitor through internet searches. I checked for reviews and found the company to be highly recommended. I started corresponding with Kirsten. She was extremely kind, very helpful and was able to put my nervous mind at ease. The package she put together for us was perfect! From my first email, the airport pick up and drop off service, and the tour with Dave, it was an indescribably fantastic experience!

I can't thank Nordic Visitor enough

This is our second trip in two years to Scotland with Nordic Visitor, and we are seriously thinking about another. I can't thank Chris enough for his patience and expertise when booking this trip.

The tour package materials were top notch. Spiral bound itinerary, recommended activities, restaurant recommendations and the large-scale road map of Scotland were a nice touch. Magdalena, our Nordic Visitor representative, responded promptly to our questions. Accomodation was all great.

Perfect vacation!

For our 50th wedding anniversary, we trusted Nordic Visitor to make our vacation a memorable one, and they made it beyond special. Chris, our tour planner, did everything to accommodate our needs and answered our questions quickly. It was an absolutely perfect vacation!

We booked a 4-day Christmas Tour of Edinburgh which included hotel accommodation, a walking tour of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, a day tour of the Highlands and Lowlands, castles, and lochs, and also a whisky distillery tour. The hotel was in an amazing location near the Christmas Markets and popular attractions. The day tours were such a wonderful way to experience the countryside outside of Edinburgh. We also added a driving service to drive us to and from the airport and the drivers were so lovely. The care package left at the hotel consisting of maps and suggested eateries was such a delightful bonus. We loved that every aspect of our trip was planned and ready for us once we arrived which diminished any travel stress that one may experience when travelling abroad.

We were in good hands

As first-time visitors to Edinburgh, and senior citizens, our choice to use Nordic Visitor was an excellent one. The welcome package we received at the hotel was really helpful, with our tour vouchers, maps and restaurant recommendations. We would not have known what hotel to select and the one selected for us was perfect. The choice of tours offered was perfect for a 5-day visit. So glad to learn about the Royal Mile and visit the castle. The trip through the Highlands and Loch Ness was beautiful. Our travel agent, Rebecca, always quickly responded to email questions prior to departure. Thank you! Nordic Visitor made our trip easy and rewarding. We were in good hands.

Highly professional service

Nordic Visitor is a highly professional tour company. From beginning to end, we have no complaints. Our travel consultant, Chris, was very quick to answer all our questions from start to finish. Could not be more pleased.

Absolutely wonderful!

Our trip was absolutely wonderful! Magda was great to work with and helped us through the whole process. Everyone we worked with from the beginning through the end of the trip was absolutely marvellous.

Example private/chauffeur driven tour itinerary

Edinburgh. After our early morning arrival, we meet our driver guide at the airport. After leaving the airport we first make our way to Linlithgow Palace. This royal palace and birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots became the backdrop for some of the most harrowing scenes in Outlander. Depicted as Wentworth Prison, the prison corridors and entrance were used in the series when Jamie Fraser was brutally incarcerated by his adversary, Blackjack Randall. Built in the 1400s and 1500s, the now-ruined palace is set among the spectacular surrounds of Linlithgow Loch and Peel. Then its onto our hotel right in town. Overnight at the Apex Waterloo Hotel.

Edinburgh. After breakfast we meet our driver guide to start our Outlander sightseeing. Our first stop is Craigmillar Castle. Known to Outlander fans as the remote Ardsmuir Prison, the place of Jamie’s incarceration in season three, Craigmillar Castle is in fact situated just a few miles from the center of Edinburgh. Visitors to the handsome ruined castle, which was intimately involved in the famous plot to murder Mary, Queen of Scots’ wearisome husband Henry Stuart, should climb the tower for a superb view of the Scottish capital. We when take time to have lunch perhaps in a quaint little pub. Then our next stop a must see for any Outlander fan is to visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse. This palace at the bottom of the Royal Mile and is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland (the Queen does in fact come and stay here every summer), and before that was the main residence of the Kings and Queens of Scotland. In a true-to-life representation, this is where Claire and Jamie visit the prince to beg him to abandon his hopeless cause. Overnight at the Apex Waterloo Hotel.

Edinburgh – Glencoe – Ft. William. This morning after breakfast we begin our journey to Glencoe. As we drive through the beautiful countryside, we first make our way to Hopetoun House. As perhaps Scotland’s finest stately home, the turn-of-the-18th-century building houses stunning furnished interiors, an extensive collection of art, and a sprawling English garden–style landscape park. Outlander fans may recognize it as several locations from the show, as at different times it has stood in for the home of the Duke of Sandringham, the Hawkins Estate, Helwater stables, and even as Jamie and Claire’s Paris apartment. Make sure to see the red drawing room where Claire and Jamie meet the Duke to request Jamie’s pardon. When not being used for filming, this room is used for private functions and dinners. Next to the red room is the living room. This may be recognizable as the room where Jamie talks with Lord Dunsany at the start of his time in Helwater. Heading outside we make our way to the stables where a number of Paris street scenes were filmed, including the infamous rape of Mary Hawkins. After leaving Hopetoun House we will stop for lunch before making our way to Blackness Castle. One of Scotland’s most impressive strongholds, Blackness Castle was built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons. Outlander fans will recognize this castle as the place of the scenes where dastardly Blackjack Randall gives Jamie a horrific whipping. This mighty fortification, located about eight miles west of South Queensferry on the shores of the Firth of Forth, was originally built in the 1440s for the influential local Crichton family. Glencoe appears in the opening credits, what a beautifully rugged area in the Scottish highlands. Then it onto Ft. William. Overnight at the Ben Nevis Hotel Ft. William.

Glencoe – Inverness. Today after a full Scottish breakfast we head out to our first stop Doune Castle. Explore this 14th century courtyard castle, with a striking 100 ft high gatehouse and one of the best-preserved great halls in Scotland. The castle is a stand-in for the fictional Castle Leoch in Outlander (the home of dashing warrior Jamie Fraser’s uncle, Colum Mackenzie, and his clan), Doune Castle is a medieval stronghold that dates back to the 14th century. We continue on to Inverness. Not far outside Inverness, Culloden Battlefield was the site of the last battle of the Jacobites. Culloden Battlefield is where the last hand-to-hand battle was fought on British soil which takes on a whole new meaning with the opening of an exciting new visitor center and interactive exhibition. The battlefield itself is now restored to as close as possible that marched on by the two sides on that fateful day. this is a real-life attraction that plays itself in the series; it appears in the scene where Jamie and Claire say goodbye before he leaves to fight in the historic battle. Overnight Inverness. Overnight at the Culloden House Hotel.

Inverness. This morning you will travel the short distance to the Clansman Harbor for a 1-hour Jacobite Cruise to enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains from the loch and sail the deepest part using the Jacobite sonar then alight at Urquhart Castle where you will have the chance to explore for an hour before cruising back up the loch to the Clansman Harbour. Urquhart Castle was the site of many battles led by the Clan MacDonald. It stands on a rocky promontory on the north shore with stunning views of the glen and a chance to spot the famous Loch Ness Monster. It has a turbulent history: seized by the English in 1296, sacked in 1545 by MacDonald Lord of the Isles and later left to decay after 1689. Returning to land travel through Inverness towards Nairn to visit Cawdor Castle which dates from the late 14th century and was built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor. The ancient medieval tower was built around the legendary holly-tree and is not another cold monument, but a splendid house and the home of the Campbell family to this day. You may enjoy afternoon tea with some home baking in the Courtyard Café. Round off today with a visit to Culloden Battlefield where the last hand-to-hand battle was fought on British soil which takes on a whole new meaning with the opening of an exciting new visitor centre and interactive exhibition. The battlefield itself is now restored to as close as possible that marched on by the two sides on that fateful day. Travelling back in time a little further visit Clava Cairns , or more correctly, Bulnaraun of Clava, one of the best-preserved Bronze Age burial sites in Scotland and Culloden Viaduct , Scotland’s longest masonry viaduct which was opened in 1898 and crosses the river Nairn at this point. Overnight at the Culloden House Hotel.

Inverness – Glasgow. On our way to Glasgow, we will visit Culross, this charming town is about as close to stepping back in time to the 16th century as possible. The whitewashed, red-tiled buildings are well preserved, such as the Town House, where witches were tried and held while awaiting execution. As a living museum of 17th-century Scottish life, the seaside town was always going to be a popular location choice when shooting a historical Scottish drama. Fittingly, Outlander has used the site in several different guises throughout the series. It has played the Black Kirk, the fictional village of Cranesmuir (where Geillis lived), the location of Balriggan Cottage (where Laoghaire and daughter Joan lived) and has been a backdrop to the Jacobite encampment and makeshift hospital scenes. Once back in Edinburgh a must see for any Outlander fan to visit is probably the Palace of Holyroodhouse. This palace at the bottom of the Royal Mile is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland (the Queen does in fact come and stay here every summer), and before that was the main residence of the Kings and Queens of Scotland. In a true-to-life representation, this is where Claire and Jamie visit the prince to beg him to abandon his hopeless cause. Overnight Apex City Hotel Glasgow.

Glasgow Airport. Today you will make your own way to Glasgow Airport for your flight home.

Your Outlander Tour Itinerary:

Day one: the filming locations around fife, in the heart of scotland….

Cranesmuir Village and Square – explore the fictional village of Cranesmuir where Geillis lives. See the square where the Tanner’s lad had his ear hammered to the stocks. Visit the impressive garden where Claire and Geillis gathered herbs, the room that was used as Jamie and Claire’s bedroom and many more filming locations. This town also lends its backdrop to the Jacobite encampment.

Falkland  – this beautiful town substitutes for 1940s and 1960s Inverness in the first and second series. See Mrs. Baird’s Guesthouse and the famous fountain where the ghost looks up at Claire’s room. Walk down the cobbled streets of old ‘Inverness’ and explore the wonderful shops there too.

The Monastery where Claire brings Jamie to recover from his prison ordeal.

Black Kirk – walk through the secluded ruins of this ancient church where Jamie and Claire discover the reason for the young boy’s illness.

The French Port of Le Havre  – this picturesque harbour was transformed to portray the French port of Le Havre in the 1740s where Jamie and Claire land when they escape to France. This is where Claire discovers smallpox on the Comte St Germain’s ship.

Day Two: More filming locations…

Hopetoun House – we’ll take you on a guided tour of this stunning stately home and gardens, to show you all of the Outlander filming locations – inside and outside – of which there are many!

Lallybroch,  the filming location for Jamie’s home.

Jack Randall’s Fort William HQ – this incredible 15th century fortress provides the setting for the Black Jack Randall’s Fort William headquarters and featured the heart-breaking scene of Jamie’s flogging.

The Kitchen where the Duke of Sandringham was beheaded – wander around this beautiful and historic kitchen, where the Duke met his fate at the hands of Murtagh.

The Church where Brianna visits Frank’s grave.

The Railway Station where Claire and Frank said their goodbyes. This picturesque station was transformed into a wartime London railway station for this scene.

The Kelpies (a wee extra treat for you) – enjoy a wander around the largest equine structures in the world. They are magnificent! After all, you can’t come all this way and not see the Kelpies. They are the Waterhorses…

Day Three: Journey north to the Highlands, taking in more filming and book locations en-route…

Castle Leoch – This historic castle plays a leading role in Outlander as the fictional Castle Leoch, home to Colum MacKenzie and his Clan. It also features in the first episode when Claire and Frank visit the castle when it stands in ruins on their day trip out.

The Chapel where Claire and Jamie hide from the Redcoats and Claire operated on Rupert’s eye . Look out of the same window as they watched the Redcoats approaching. This is a beautiful Chapel with an amazing history.

Cranesmuir Witch Trial Court – this beautiful church in Perth has medieval origins and was used as the location for Cranesmuir Church. This hosted the infamous scenes of Claire and Geillis’s witch trial, where you can stand in the very same pulpit.

Glencoe – enjoy one of the most stunningly beautiful drives in Scotland through this famous Glen. The drive takes you through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, through Rannoch Moor and into Glencoe as we head north towards Fort William and the Highlands. The instantly recognisable and breath-taking mountains of Glencoe were used in the opening scenes of Outlander. This Glen was also used at the beginning of Series Six for the outdoor scenes of Ardsmuir Prison.

Fort William – we’ll take the scenic drive north to the town of Fort William where you’ll see the foundations of the original and mighty Fort overlooking Loch Linnhe. This is the book location for Black Jack’s Fort William. Then we’ll drive through the Great Glen further into the Highlands.

Arrival in Inverness, Highlands.

Day Four: The Clan Lands and Loch Ness – the Outlander book locations…

Urquhart Castle, on the banks of Loch Ness  – The last of the government troops garrisoned here during the Jacobite Risings and blew up the castle when they departed. Urquhart’s iconic ruins remain, offering glimpses into medieval times. Walk down to the shores of Loch Ness and look for the ‘Water Horse’ which entranced Claire.

Inverness, as it was in 1745  – step back in time as we take you on a historic walking tour along the oldest street in Inverness to visit the buildings that were standing during the mid-18th century and before. This includes an ancient church where Jacobite prisoners were executed after the battle. Although the fountain outside Mrs Baird’s Guest House does not stand in Inverness now, it once did. We will take you to that place and show you exactly where the ghost would have been seen by Frank.

Beauly Priory – walk around this beautiful 13th Century ruin where Claire met Maisri, the Lovat’s Seer, as we read you the excerpts from Dragonfly in Amber which were set here.

Wardlaw Mausoleum –  reputed to be the final resting place of Simon ‘The Fox’ Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat who is Jamie Fraser’s grandfather in Outlander. We will visit the underground crypt that was said to contain his headless body, smuggled here after his execution at the Tower of London. The Mausoleum was built as a burial place and shrine to the Frasers of Lovat.

Glen Ord Distillery was founded by the Clan Mackenzie. You can enjoy a whisky tasting if you wish to (the price of the tasting is not included in your tour), or just browse the shop and explore the exhibition. If you’ve come all the way to Scotland, why not enjoy a wee dram…

The Beautiful Black Isle – enjoy a stunning circular journey around the Black Isle, stopping at several places of historic interest along the way.

scotland tour outlander

Day Five: Over the sea to Skye…

Prepare to journey through the wild, remote, breathtaking Highlands, where every mile is beautiful. Lochs, Heilan’ Coos, castles, mountains and glens…

Loch Ness… our first stop of the day will be at a small village on the banks of Loch Ness where you’ll have your photo taken by Andy at an iconic monument to the famous Loch.

Haunted Graveyard – you’ll visit a Lovat graveyard with an incredible and spine-tingling history behind it.

Dun Bonnet’s Territory – we’ll show you where the real Dun Bonnet once lived and where his home once stood, near to where he hid in a cave for seven years after the battle of Culloden. As we travel this road, we will be sharing stories of the people who lived or passed through here from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Eilean Donan Castle  – after several spectacular viewpoints, we’ll stop for a break at this iconic castle which is one of the most famous in Scotland. It was used as a filming location for ‘Highlander’, ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’, ‘The Master of Ballantrae’, ‘The New Avengers’, ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘James Bond – The World is Not Enough’.

Then we’ll travel over the sea to Skye…

Kyleachin – we’ll stop at this small village briefly for a wonderful view of the Skye Bridge.

Cuillin Mountains  are a spectacular and majestic mountain range as we begin our journey on the Isle of Skye.

Portree – we’ll enjoy lunch overlooking a Loch at a cafe and gift shop on the outskirts of this colourful town.

The Duirinish Peninsula stretches west from Dunvegan. Most of the area is wild and uninhabited, with the flat-topped mountains of Healabhal Mor and Healabhal Bheag, or Macleod’s Tables, dominating the surrounding countryside. The story goes that when the Chief of the Clan Macleod wanted to impress a visitor, he dined with them atop Healabhal Mor, surrounded by torch-carrying clansmen. On our way around Duirinish, we’ll be taking you to a working Croft where you can meet some Highland Cows, learn how to spin wool and visit a local artist’s studio. These are the very skills which keep Skye thriving with Celtic spirit.

Sligachan – we’ll stop at this beauty spot for a rest and a cuppa before heading back to Inverness…

Loch Carron – we may just have a wee surprise for you here!

scotland tour outlander

Day Six: Culloden and the Standing Stones…

The Standing Stones  – this is an exceptionally well-preserved group of prehistoric burial cairns and standing stones which were built around 4000 years ago. They include the famous ‘split stone’. It’s these stones near Culloden Battlefield, where the sounds of battle would have been heard on that fateful day, just as they were Jamie and Claire said their goodbyes before he went into battle and she came back through the stone.

Culloden Battlefield – where the last pitched battle was fought on British soil. Enjoy a guided tour of the battlefield with a Jacobite (Andrew) and see the gravestone for the Frasers who tragically fell on 16 April 1746 along with many other Clansmen. After that, tour the indoor museum and gift shop at your leisure.

Past Life Regression  – this is included in your tour, and is also optional, so it’s at your discretion whether you’d like to experience it or not. There are many who feel a deep connection to particular places, yet are unable to explain why. They find that exploring their past lives answers many questions for them. For information on what Past Life Regression is  click here.   You are welcome to download our free   Past Lives Clues Workbook , which may help you begin to join the dots.

Jacobite Weapons Demonstration : See how the weapons were used in battle and handle them yourself – the Targe, Lochaber Axe, Basket Hilt Broadsword, Flintlock Musket, Flintlock Pistol, Brown Bess, Blunderbuss, Powder Horn, Dirk and the Sgian Dubh. Also see our collection of historic pieces and books from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Culloden House – at the time of the Jacobite uprising in 1745-46, Bonnie Prince Charlie used Culloden House as his lodging and battle headquarters prior to the fateful battle on Culloden Moor. As such, Culloden House featured heavily in Outlander towards the end of Series two and of course in the novels. Diana Gabaldon stays here when she visits Inverness.

Afternoon Tea at Culloden House – enjoy an indulgent Afternoon Tea in their magnificent Adam Drawing Room; a feast of cakes, freshly made Scottish shortbread, pudding, scones with cream and jam, hot sausage rolls and sandwiches, all included in your tour.

Personal time in Inverness – from 3pm you’ll have some personal time to enjoy shopping and exploring this beautiful city.

scotland tour outlander

Day Seven: historic and filming locations…

Ruthven Barracks (historic location)  – you’ll travel south through the Cairngorm National Park to these famous Barracks. Following the Jacobite defeat at Culloden, it is estimated some 2000-3,000 men gathered here to await word from the Prince, when a note was received from him stating  ‘Let every man seek his own safety in the best way he can.’  Though not a filming location, this historic site is most definitely worth a visit.

Craigh na Dun – you’ll stand on that very special hill and take in the breath-taking views and the tangible energy surrounding you. After all, your Outlander tour would not be complete without a visit to this famous hill. Do note though, that the standing stones won’t be there, but the energy of the stones and what happened there remains…

House of Bruar – enjoy some indulgent shopping and a sit-down lunch at this unique shopping centre in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park.

Stunning Woodlands used in Outlander Season 5 filming – we’ll take a walk through breath-taking scenery, through some of the tallest trees and most beautiful woods in Scotland, to an incredible waterfall and viewpoint.

The tour finishes at Dunkeld and Birnam train station (near Perth) by 3pm . From there you’ll be able to catch one of the regular trains direct into Edinburgh or Glasgow, or to Edinburgh Airport.

This is more than just a tour…

Your tour guide wears the full Jacobite Kilt: called a féileadh-mór for the Highland part of the tour. This is the style of kilt worn by the Jacobites during the 1745 uprising, and by Jamie in Outlander.

Professional quality photographs of your tour: Throughout the tour we will take professional quality photographs of you in each location (only with your permission of course), and we will e-mail you a complete photographic record of your Outlander experience within two weeks. Here is a  link  to photos of recent Outlander clients who have kindly given us permission to share them.

A maximum of 6 people per tour means that you can come to know your fellow Outlander travellers as friends, and that we can ensure everyone’s needs are met.

Two very passionate Tour Guides throughout your tour: We are Andrew and Diane Nicholson, husband and wife team, and we are passionate about this beautiful country, its remarkable history, and sharing it with you. We have a very personal story to share about why we love Scotland so much, why we chose to include the option of Past Life Regression on our tours, and why Outlander affected us both so deeply. You can read our past life story here.

For a Photographic Gallery of some of your Outlander Tour locations, you can enjoy the album we’ve shared on our Facebook Page .

Do we work with Travel Agents or 3rd parties?

We do not sell via OTAs or work directly with travel agents or third parties. We wish to build a great relationship and enjoy clear communication and a shared understanding with our tour clients.

For this reason, if you are working with a travel agent who may be assisting you with flights or aspects of a wider tour agenda, we are happy to provide you with information to assist with this process. We do however, request that all communication goes through the lead tour guest who makes the booking and is attending the tour. This person is likely to communicate on behalf of others in their party.

Book this as a Private Tour?

Due to the high demand for our regular scheduled tours, we are unable to offer this tour as a private or customised tour for the foreseeable future.

We are available for other Outlander and non-Outlander-related private tours between November and March. These are normally based out of Inverness as a start/end point. Please refer to the other tour menu options on our Regular Tours menu, or contact us to discuss a bespoke tour such as one based on Clan Ancestry, Scottish castles, The Jacobites, Photography etc.

On your arrival in Scotland…

On arrival in Scotland on the date listed at the top of this page for each tour, we suggest you spend that day exploring Edinburgh at your leisure. You can store your luggage at Edinburgh Central train station so that you may explore with ease. We supply you with a self-guided walking tour of the Outlander filming locations on the Royal Mile, along with suggestions for other places you may wish to visit.

To book your Outlander Experience Tour…

PLEASE ENSURE YOU READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU BOOK:

Your Deposit secures your place – A 15% non-refundable deposit is payable to book and secure your place on the tour. Deposits are non-transferable to alternative dates. Please note, we do not accept additional payments/instalments until the final payment is due. The remainder of your payment will be due 60 days prior to your touring dates. If you are within the 60 days when you pay your deposit, then we will forward a payment request to you for the remainder of the payment once we receive notification of your deposit.

The price is per person, not per room, based on two people sharing a room. For the avoidance of any doubt – in the UK, a twin room contains two single beds – each suitable for one person.  A double room is the same size room containing one larger (UK queen size) bed for two people; this bed is approximately the size of two single beds together. All rooms are en-suite.

Solo travellers will pay an additional single supplement if they require a room of their own (but not if they share with another solo traveller). If you are a solo traveller and require a single room, then please do not book using the widget; instead, please make an enquiry via the form on our Contact Us page and let us know how many single rooms you need. We will then confirm availability and the additional cost of the single room supplement.

Fitness and mobility requirements . We personally guide our groups around each location, which is one of the benefits of choosing this tour. We don’t just drop you off and tell you what time to be back at the minibus. As we guide our group around each location, we share a great deal of history and the Outlander context. Each location is carefully timed to allow us to visit every place on each day’s itinerary. In this regard, it is very important that you are able to keep up with the group and the guides. We do quite a bit of walking over the seven days. Please note, we are not able to leave you alone in the minibus at any location. Therefore, you will need to be able to:

  • walk a mile non-stop at an average pace.
  • walk unaided on uneven surfaces and cobblestones.
  • manage 20 steep steps.
  • walk up a steep (1 in 3) hill for 100 yards.
  • lift yourself up onto a step, duck down and easily manoeuvre yourself into and out of our minibus several times a day.

Travel sickness – We travel many narrow, undulating and winding roads on the Highlands part of this seven day tour. We wouldn’t be able to stop on a regular basis to allow travel sickness to subside without significantly disrupting the itinerary timings. So if you suffer with severe travel/motion sickness which can’t easily be cured with medication, then this tour would not be suitable for you.

If you book without discussing special requirements with us first and we do not feel this tour is suitable for you, then you may forfeit your payment depending on when you advise us of your requirements. Any refund we agree to pay you if we are unable to accommodate you on this tour will be 1) based on our standard cancellation terms which are explained in our Terms and Conditions , and will also be 2) minus the Stripe fees, which will have already been charged to your payment and are not recoverable, plus an administrative fee.

This tour is not suitable for non-English speakers. We share a great deal of history and information throughout this tour, including in the minibus while we travel between locations. We are a small group of six tour guests plus two guides, so having to allow for translation between every few sentences would greatly disrupt the flow of delivery and the experience for the others on the tour. Therefore, this scheduled Seven Day Outlander Tour is for English speakers only. If you would like to book as a non-English speaker and translator onto any of our tours then you would need to book a private tour and contact us to discuss this. We are unable to provide translation services ourselves.

This tour is not suitable for children – this Seven Day Outlander Tour is for adults over the age of 16 only.

Outlander Tours Scotland Review For 2024

Outlander Tours Scotland Outlander Locations in Scotland

This article has links to products and services we love, which we may make commission from.

Get transported to your favourite Outlander locations! Outlander tours (Scotland) will whisk you away to walk in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire at the grand entrance of Castle Leoch, maybe pick herbs in Claire’s herb garden, and stroll the cobbled streets of Cranesmuir.

Our guide to Outlander tours in Scotland includes day trips and multi-day tours from Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as a popular Edinburgh walking tour.

Outlander, originally a series of books by author Diana Gabaldon, has taken the world by storm since being made into a British-American hit TV show.

Outlander has fans worldwide and sees visitors flocking to Scotland to tour the sites used during filming. Starting in 1945 Scotland, Claire, played by Catriona Balfe, is a wartime nurse who returns to her husband Frank (Tobias Menzies), who whisks her away to ‘Inverness’ for a second honeymoon.

Here, after finding a collection of standing stones, Claire is hurtled back in time to Jacobite Scotland, where she meets Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

The Outlander filming locations, mainly in Scotland, have seen their visitor numbers double, even triple, and you too can see the sights of this hit show with Outlander tours from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

But aren’t some seasons set in the US? Don’t be fooled by Jamie and Claire’s immigration to North Carolina; Scotland’s locations were still used for filming!

Best Outlander Tours Scotland

Why should you book a tour of Scotland’s Outlander sites? There are a couple of reasons why visiting the hotspots as part of a tour is better than doing it alone.

Transport in Scotland

Although Scotland’s cities are well connected by train lines, many of the Outlander filming locations are not in the city.

For example, the stunning Hopetoun House’s (season one, two, three, and four) closest train station is Dalmeny (South Queensferry), but it takes at least one hour to walk from Dalmeny to Hopetoun House. Scotland’s infrastructure is notoriously poor.

The further north you go, the worse it gets. Expect Sunday service for buses every day of the week.

Our ‘A’ rounds (single track) in the Highlands and on the West Coast are not for everyone; cautious drivers may not enjoy the experience.

The Outlander Effect

The Outlander Effect is real; most locations have seen an increase in footfall (more people visiting = busy), and Doune Castle enjoyed a 91% increase in customers!

Tours often have pre-arranged time slots, so you don’t have to fight your way through the crowds.

Expert Guides

You get more bang for your buck with Outlander tours. They include transport, knowledgeable and passionate guides, and often entry fees.

Local History

Tour guides will give you more than just Outlander information; you get to spend time with a real local. One of my favourite things about tours is being able to ask questions about real-life topics!

Outlander Community

Bonus reason – you get to spend the duration of the trip with fans; I’m sure you can find at least one thing in common (Jamie?)

Outlander  Tour Edinburgh

Tours from Scotland’s capital leave daily, so visitors do not need to attempt to tackle our infamous single-track roads or drive on the left.

There are a few options for Outlander day tours from Edinburgh, so you can prioritise what you want to see.

Affordable Outlander Day Tours from Edinburgh

This full-day tour by a very respectable tour company in Scotland is not private but kinder on the purse strings and touches base at the following Outlander scenes:

  • Visit Doune Castle, aka Castle Leoch.
  • Culross starring as Cranesmuir.
  • Falkland – Inverness 1940s (see me doing the Jamie pose below!)
  • Blackness Castle headquarters of Black Jack Randall.
  • Meeting point: Edinburgh Bus Station
  • Price £53 per person.

It’s not just an Outlander tour but also a Scottish history tour. You hear about the wars and celebrities that inspired Diana Gabaldon in her writing. You can read about my tour experience here .

Outlander Tours Glasgow

This Outlander day tour leaves Scotland’s biggest (and best?!) city, Glasgow , and focuses not only on the show locations but also the Jacobite story.

The 4th oldest university in the English-speaking languages is used as the show’s Harvard University, where Frank teaches.

Close to the University, you will find Kelvingrove Park, aka Outlander’s Boston Park. In the city centre, head to the Glasgow Cathedral to see where Claire volunteers as a nurse at L’Hospital Des Anges in Paris.

  • Doune Castle – home to the Clan MacKenzie and Deanstoun Distillery, Jamie’s cousin’s warehouse.
  • Culross (Claire’s Garden) and Falkland (Inverness) in the Kingdom of Fife.

Inverness Outlander

So you’ve made it to Scotland’s real Inverness, and now you are looking for an Outlander tour?

There is a one-day tour that shows you where Outlander got its influence.

This Full-Day Outlander features the real Culloden (the filming location was Glen Affric), where Claire and Jamie said their tearful goodbyes.

It is also where the Jacobites, who were supporters of the Roman Catholic James VII of Scotland and II of England, took their last breath as they fought for their country on 16th April 1746.

The tour also includes a stop at Clava Cairns, a Loch Ness cruise (optional), lunch at Beauly, and then a dram at a Highland whisky distillery.

Culloden Scotland

10 Outlander Filming Locations – Where is Outlander Filmed?

1. clava cairns/culloden.

Although Culloden wasn’t officially used for filming, the event is such a major part of the series so visiting the battlefield is an emotional and saddening experience.

The award-winning visitor centre has brilliant exhibitions, and a 360-degree immersion theatre puts you right in the centre of the battle.

There is an audio guide to listen to while you walk the battleground so you can listen to Gaelic songs and tales and immerse yourself in the story of this momentous battle.

Nearby are the amazing  Clava Cairns standing stones, including a majestic cairn with an atmospheric split.

However, it must have lost its magical power as there have been no reports of transportation, only visitors staying firmly in this century, disappointingly.

You may also like our Scotland-inspired gifts , including Outlander ideas!

Clava Cairns Outlander

2. Highland Folk Museum

The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore is a favourite location used by the Outlander production team.

With the mighty Cairngorm mountains set as a backdrop, the 17th-century township really makes you feel like you are in the heart of the gritty Jacobite Highlands and lucky for us, it is live all year around.

You can witness how people used to live.

The township was used in the rent episode where Claire helped Dougal collect the rent.

Every year the museum holds an Outlander day where you can “waulk the wool”, sing traditional songs and meet traditional crafters, Highland cows and fellow fans.

3. Doune Castle, Outlander

Another of the most popular locations, Doune Castle in Perthshire, was the setting for Outlander Castle Leoch, home to Colum MacKenzie and his Clan.

This 14th-century courtyard castle was also used for Monty Python and the Holy Grail (this is a lesser-known). It was Winterfell in the pilot of Game of Thrones.

A castle of many talents! Update 2018: Netflix Outlaw King also used Doune Castle as Black Douglas’s home. Find out more here .

Doune Castle Scotland

4. Falkland Outlander

Falkland, in the Kingdom of Fife, stood in for 1945 and 1960’s Inverness. The original thatched roof houses, cobbled streets, and pretty square made it the ideal location.

Here, you’ll find:

  • Mrs Baird’s B&B (which is actually functioning accommodation; check out availability at  The Covenanter Hotel ).
  • Bruce Fountain, where Jamie watches Claire in the window.
  • Campbell’s Coffee Shop (same name in real life).
  • Farrell & Sons Hardware store [Fayre Earth shop – repainted] is where Claire sees the blue vase.

Pre-Outlander effect, Falkland was a lovely village to visit, it’s great to see the show give visitors a catalyst to visit.

Falkland features as the 1940’s location in season one and then is revisited in season two when we skip to the 1960s Inverness.

Mrs Baird B&B Outlander Falkland Scotland_

5.  The Reaper Tall Ship

Sailing off into the distance on the Cristabel might not be possible, but you can see the two-masted ship itself in the harbour of the fishing village of Anstruther in Fife.

Anstruther is a popular Summer village in its own right, famous for its fish and chips!

Le Harve Port is actually located at Dysart Harbour near Kirkcaldy and is also worth a visit to see where Claire and Jamie escape to France.

Heading to Fife? Don’t miss our ultimate guide on what to do there.

6.  Culross

If you want to see first hand what Scottish villages were like in the 17th century, visit Culross in the Kingdom of Fife.

This time warp is often said to be one of the most picturesque villages in the UK. Culross was used a lot during filming as Cranesmuir.

The ochre (yellow) Palace was used in filming, and Claire’s herb garden is, in fact, the palace’s gardens, which you can explore.

The Mercat Cross was where the little boy had his ear nailed to the post, and Geillis Duncan’s house is behind it.

A lot of Outlander action for such a small (but cute) village.

Dunfermline, next to Culross, made it into the best places to visit in Scotland this year. Find out more here .

Ocher yellow building known as Culross Palace in Fife Scotland

7.  Bo’ness Railway

If you fancy a trip on a steam train while you are in Scotland, why not visit Bo’ness Railway Station and take a journey on the same train Claire waved from? You can even have afternoon tea on board!

Boness Railway Station - Outlander Tours

8.  Blackness Castle

The formidable Outlander Blackness Castle, overlooking the Firth of Forth, was the perfect choice as the show’s version of Fort William.

The castle was once used as a prison and a military fort and was built purely for defence.

The courtyard was the setting for the horrific scene of Jamie’s whipping, where Claire and Jamie ran along the walls to escape.

Blackness Castle Outlander

9. Midhope Castle aka Lallybroch

Yes, you can visit Jamie’s home at Lallyborch and see where he was flayed (whipped) at the archway.

This spot is usually very busy with tourists, so you have to be patient!

The building cannot be accessed; only the exterior was used in filming Outlander, like many of the locations on the Outlander tours.

Midhope Castle Lallybroch Outlander

10. Outlander Standing Stones

So where is Craigh na Dun? Unfortunately, it doesn’t exist, but you can see where it was filmed if you look hard enough.

On the long, winding road between Queens View, near Pitlochry, and the village of Kinloch Rannoch, you may spot the hill with the trees.

The producers added the stones. I have travelled this road at least ten times since I knew of the filming, and I’ve yet to find it, but I know others have. I know it’s on the left-hand side, that’s about it, so if you happen to spot it let me know.

Bonus: Glencoe

Glencoe is shown off beautifully at the very start at the opening credits and it’s the perfect place to see what makes Scotland so special truly.

If you ask any Scottish travel lover what their favourite place is in Scotland, most will say Glencoe.

The huge, majestic mountains tower above you as you travel through, and the scenery around you is truly stunning.

I am wanted to book a 2 day Outlander tour. I have not be able to access your site to set up. This will be in May anytime between 22 – 27th. Can this be done by phone? Your help is most appreciated.

Thank you, Pam

Hi Pam, you can click through the link to the tour that suits your travel needs best and book from there. Have a great time.

Oh so exciting!!! We are booked for a tour in April of 2022 through Tour The Scottish Highlands Limited or the Outlander Past Lives Experience…It’s a 7 day tour…Have you heard of this one?

Hi there Mamie! Thanks for taking the time to read our guide to the best Outlander tours and leave a comment. I’ve not seen these tours in action myself unfortunately. I’m sure you will have a fab time in Scotland!

Hi I am interested in the cost of the tour that takes you to the Outlander filming sights. Places to stay and if you have information on airfare, and which city to land at to be closer to the Outlander filming sights. Thank you.

Hi Kathy, you can click on any of the tours which suit your travel needs best. This will show you the prices. Edinburgh is the best location to land at as most tours leave from Scotland’s capital. However, you can take tours from Glasgow. Both city tours are described in the guide above. Best ~ Gemma

Hello, What a fabulous Scottish destination trip! My husband and I love the Outlander series and he is part Scottish to boot! We’d love to do a full-blown Outlander tour, so it appears that we need to book each of the ‘options’ offered. I don’t see one trip that includes all trips. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Also, how do these trips accommodate a person who needs a walker due to a horribly bad back? Which trips are best for that reason as well?

Thank you and hopefully we’ll be able to travel safely (due to the pandemic) soon. Best wishes, RCP

Lovely to hear from you Paige! Could you send me an email and I will help get you in contact with the right people. You can reach me at [email protected] ~ Thank you! Gemma

Welcome to Sam's Outlander Tours

My love for outlander.

I have been an Outlander fan for several years now. I was introduced to the books by clients I had on tour. Eventually I read the first book and I was hooked. I am a tour guide and have worked in Edinburgh for 24 years taking tours around the city and all over Scotland. I took my first Outlander Tour in May 2007. It was great spending time with fellow fans!  You can read about me  here. If you have any questions please get in contact.

I have worked for  Edinburgh Tour Guides  as a tour guides since 2000 and am a member of SITOA (Scottish Independent Tour Operators Association).

Lallybroch Castle

Outlander tours depart from your hotel or specified pick-up point, which means ultimate convenience when booking a Scottish Guided Tours tour.

Tours start with a visit to Lallybroch. Only a short drive from Edinburgh and as we wind our way down the country lanes, Midhope Castle appears.

As a result, an iconic photo opportunity and one that is instantly recognisable awaits.

Outlander Tours from Edinburgh

Blackness Castle is our fantastic next stop—an incredible fortress by the Firth of Forth and an excellent visitor experience.

Explore this magnificent Castle which doubles as the Fort William HQ of  Black Jack Randall.

The “Firth of Forth” is an estuary or bay where one of Scotland’s main rivers meets the North Sea.

Outlander Tour Scotland

This particular Outlander filming location was built in the 15th century to defend Scotland from attack, and as you walk the ramparts, you can feel the history here.

In the Outlander TV Series, Blackness Castle becomes the Fort William HQ of Black Jack Randall. Iconic scenes from Outlander Season one were filmed at Blackness.

On our guided tour of Scotland, you will enjoy exploring Blackness Castle, and from the ramparts, we look across the river to our next stop.

Private Tours of Scotland

Culross – 16th Century Village

We cross the River Forth, and the village of Culross awaits.

Culross is a 16th-century village used extensively in Outlander, and as such, the village is a must-see on any Outlander Day Tour.

Outlander Tour Scotland

Travel back in time

The village of Culross is a genuine opportunity to travel back in time. A 16th-century Scottish trading port and fishing village has been beautifully preserved.

As we wander the cobbled, winding streets, you will recognise many different filming locations from the Outlander TV series.

Geillis Duncan’s parlour and house, Jacobite encampments and many more locations on or Outlander Tour Scotland

At the rear of Culross Palace is the “Castle Leoch” herb garden, where Claire is often found in Seasons 1 & 2.

Many of Culross Palace’s interiors have featured in Outlander, and you will feel very much a part of centuries past as you wander through this magnificent building.

16th century Culross is a beautiful lunch stop with quaint shops, cafes, and a great local pub.

Outlander Tour Scotland

Doune Castle

As it was known, Castle Leoch or Doune Castle sits on the fringes of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and is our first stop after lunch.

Doune Castle will be very familiar indeed.

This 14th century Scottish Castle is Castle Leoch and, as such, a must-see.

Outlander Tours from Edinburgh

A marvellous Castle and having never changed from when first built by the Duke of Albany in the 1300s is a great visit.

As well as Castle Leoch in Outlander, Doune Castle was all the castles in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Suppose that was not enough of a claim to fame! Doune Castle is also Winterfell in Game of Thrones!

Therefore, this wee castle nestled in the woods near Stirling has become a top-rated visitor attraction.

Private Tours of Scotland

Above all, our Outlander Location Day Tours from Edinburgh are not only an opportunity to visit the locations used in the filming of the hit tv series but, most importantly, to build a bigger picture of Scottish history.

Outlander’s Sam Heughan Teases Playful Intent to Charm Taylor Swift at Her Scottish ‘Eras Tour’ Concert | Celebrity Insights by Just Jared

Sam Heughan , the star of Outlander , could potentially emerge as a comedic rival for Travis Kelce over Taylor Swift ‘s affections during her upcoming Eras Tour concert in Scotland.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, who is known for hits like “Shake It Off,” will be performing in Scotland starting on June 7, with Heughan among the attendees.

Heughan made light-hearted comments via social media on Wednesday (June 5), alluding to the fantasy of stealing Swift’s heart during her show.

Continue scrolling to read more…

In a playful Instagram post, the Scottish actor shared a clip while in his Jamie Fraser Outlander costume, humorously suggesting that Swift would be enamored by him once she spots him in the audience.

“We’re gonna go see Taylor Swift play in Scotland, and I think most of the cast is going. She obviously doesn’t know this, but when she comes to Scotland and she sees me in the audience, she’s going to forget all about him and fall for a man in a ginger wig,” Heughan quipped. “How can she resist? Yeah, she’s gonna shake him off and take me out instead. I’m really excited.”

While Heughan’s remark was made in jest, it’s worth remembering that Travis Kelce himself had hoped to catch Swift’s attention at a previous Eras Tour show.

Interestingly, shortly before his humorous claim, Heughan was photographed holding hands with an unidentified woman in London, stirring curiosity among fans.

Curious about Sam Heughan and Outlander ? Discover more about the show’s cast and latest developments.

No, Sam Heughan was making a playful joke. He did not seriously intend to pursue Taylor Swift and interrupt her connection with Travis Kelce.

Why is Sam Heughan’s comment about Taylor Swift humorous?

Sam Heughan’s comment is humorous because he is suggesting, as his iconic character Jamie Fraser from Outlander, that he could win over Taylor Swift simply by being in the audience at her concert, which is clearly a tongue-in-cheek remark.

Outlander Star Sam Heughan Has a Pitch for Taylor Swift: Let’s Fall In Love

scotland tour outlander

By Kase Wickman

Taylor Swift will have an especially adoring fan with a plan at one of her performances in Scotland this weekend. Travis Kelce better watch out: Sam Heughan has his sights set on stealing a play from Kelce's own book— and maybe his girlfriend, Swift, in the process too.

In a clip posted to his Instagram account Wednesday, Outlander star Heughan revealed that he and many castmates plan to go together to see Swift perform during her Eras Tour’s upcoming three-night stand in Edinburgh, Scotland from June 7 to June 9. He also revealed that he has a plan to present to Swift for her careful consideration: What if instead of dating Kelce, she paired off with “a man in a ginger wig”—specifically, Heughan—instead.

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

“She obviously doesn’t know this, but when she comes to Scotland and she sees me in the audience, she’s gonna forget all about,” Heughan pauses significantly here, “ him and fall for a man in a ginger wig. How could she resist?”

Heughan, aforementioned wig upon his head, certainly couldn’t resist dropping a Swiftian reference, continuing, “You know, she’s gonna shake him off and take me out instead. I’m really excited.”

He then flashed Swift’s signature heart-hands gesture, which he repeated in emoji form in the post’s caption.

“Welcome to Scotland Taylor! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿” he wrote. “JAMMF is a Swiftie 🫶”

For those not in the Scottish time travel know, that would be Heughan’s character, James “Jamie” Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser. Somehow the couple name “Taymie” just doesn’t have that ring to it, we have to say.

But lest we dash Heughan's dreams, just remember: A man named Travis Kelce showed up at an Eras Tour date less than a year ago with a friendship bracelet and a dream, and look at him now .

A representative for Taylor Swift did not immediately return Vanity Fair 's request for comment.

Outlander Adventure 1 day tour

Outlander Tours from Edinburgh

Visit three castles and a well-preserved village on this adventure through the sights and stories of Outlander.

Tour Highlights

Midhope Castle - Jamie’s family home, Lallybroch, is as lovely as it looks in the show.

Blackness Castle - The tough-looking castle looks like it could fend off an entire empire. And in Outlander , it impersonates Fort William.

Linlithgow Palace - This pretty palace is a favourite of ours because of its connection to Mary, Queen of Scots. It’s also known for one of the most intense scenes in the Outlander series…

Culross - This 16th-century village poses as Cranesmuir in Outlander . It also starred in the movies: Captain America: First Avenger and The 39 Steps .

Doune Castle - In Outlander , it’s the fictional Castle Leoch. And in reality, it’s a stunning castle with a tall gate house, an impressive greathall, and lovely views of the River Teith.

Your journey

There are moments that make your heart pound, scenes that leave you on the edge of your seat, and kisses that cause you to blush.

But no matter how thrilling Outlander is, we think the real-life sites are even more emotive.

This is because visiting the locations lets you step back in time and wander through unchanged, ancient villages. It gives you the chance to gaze up in awe at the mighty walls of a 600-year-old castle. And it allows you to venture through the real battlefields of the Jacobite uprising.

On this tour, your guide takes you through a fantastic array of Outlander sights while telling you all about the history that inspired the famous show.

So, take this time-travelling adventure and discover that the real locations and history are as exciting as the show itself.

Tour Details

Students, seniors over 60, and children between 5 and 15 (unfortunately, we don't carry children under 5 years old)

  • Pack your waterproof clothing and walking shoes
  • Some attraction tickets can be purchased in advance when you book your tour. You’ll have the option to add at check-out. Other attractions will not be available to book beforehand, instead you can purchase those while on tour.
  • Transport in a 16 seat Mercedes mini-coach
  • Air conditioning as standard
  • The stories and services of an English-speaking driver-guide

Time for your own Outlander adventure. You leave Edinburgh and begin following the trail of film locations featured in the Outlander TV Series.

First, we travel to the place that needs no introduction: Midhope Castle, known as Jamie’s lovely home Lallybroch. And you'll get a warmer welcome than he did. The cosy interior of the house has been re-created in the film studios. In reality, visitors can’t explore the ruins of the castle but you can sit on the iconic steps of Lallybroch and wait for Jamie or Claire to walk through the beautiful archway in the courtyard.

We then journey through the charming countryside to Blackness Castle. It’s an impressive fortress that’s known as the ‘ship that never sailed’ because it resembles a giant stone boat. You have time to walk along the ramparts and explore the fictional headquarters of Jack Randall. Just pray you don't run into him...

The next stop is Linlithgow Palace, otherwise known as Wentworth Prison. It’s also where you have lunch, so try local specialities or have a picnic by the loch and take a photo of the ruins of Mary Queen of Scots’ birthplace.

Heading north, we journey past Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument to Doune Castle, or as it’s called in  Outlander , Castle Leoch. This formidable building represents home to Colum MacKenzie and his clan in the 18th-century episodes. When you visit, you can discover its real story and get an insight into the living conditions of a Scottish earl in the 14th century. There’s also an excellent audio guide describing how this castle was used as a filming location for  Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Travel back in time once more as your driver-guide takes you to Culross. This virtually unchanged 16th-century village overlooks the sea and poses as the fictional town of Cranesmuir. You have time to visit Claire’s herb garden, explore the palace, or wander the ancient streets while you imagine what life must have been like 400 years ago.

From there, we head back to Edinburgh, where we arrive in the late afternoon.

Attractions

Tour Attractions

You are able to pre-purchase entrance tickets to the following attractions at the time of booking:

  • Blackness Castle
  • Doune Castle

Other attractions may be booked and paid locally during the tour.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Outlander 's Sam Heughan Jokes That Taylor Swift Should Leave Travis Kelce for Jamie Fraser

The Outlander cast is headed to the Eras Tour in Edinburgh.

preview for Outlander Cast vs IRL

"We're going to go see Taylor Swift play in Scotland and I think most of the cast is going," Heughan said in a clip posted to his Instagram yesterday . "She obviously doesn't know this, but when she comes to Scotland and she sees me in the audience, she's going to forget all about him [Travis Kelce] and fall for a man in a ginger wig."

He continues, clearly joking, "How can she resist? She's going to shake him off and take me out instead. I'm really excited!"

Heughan captioned his video "Welcome to Scotland Taylor! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. JAMMF is a Swiftie 🫶," referencing his character, whose full name is James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser . Watch the full clip here:

Swift will perform three nights at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, starting tomorrow, June 7 through Sunday, June 9. It's unclear which night the Outlander cast will attend—or if Heughan will go in costume as his character, Jamie, as he said he'll be in the audience in a "ginger wig."

Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce, recently watched the Eras Tour in Paris, telling his brother Jason on their podcast, "It is absolutely unbelievable. I enjoyed every bit of it. I don't know if they're just getting better or if I just keep forgetting how they are." He added, "I'm just happy for everybody that's in the 'Eras Tour' that's performing, from the dancers to the band and obviously, Taylor. It just looks like they're having so much fun out there, and they're absolutely killing it. They're putting on a show that you won't get anywhere else."

Scottish Outlander Tour

Inspired by the romanticism of the books and famous TV program Outlander & left with a desire to see the “wee country” it is based on? Or interested in a short tour to visit sites of historical & cultural importance? Either way, this is your tour!

Outlander Tour

Day 1 - Morning pick up from your hotel by your Inspiring Travel Driver/Guide – Today you will leave beautiful Edinburgh behind and begin your Outlander themed tour of Scotland in earnest, visiting 3 of the locales used in the famous series. The fictional Castle Leoch, home of the MacKenzie Clan, the Castle HQ of Black Jack that doubles as Fort William and a visit to Linlithgow Palace which as well as being a set has its own huge historical significance as the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots. You can enter each of these sites and tour them at your leisure, why not take the optional audio tour of the fictional Castle Leoch, narrated by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame. Your guide will always be on hand too, to tell you all about the places you are visiting. After a busy day of sightseeing you will be dropped off at your traditional Scottish lodgings by your Driver/Guide. Tonight you will enjoy a stay in Perthshire in a 5-star Spa Hotel or Castle.

Day 2 - After Breakfast we will continue our journey through the beautiful countryside of the Kingdom of Perth, scene of lots of the sets and backdrops for Outlander. Today you will visit Castle Gardens that double as The Palace of Versailles, these Gardens have been voted one of Europe’s best examples of a formal garden, keep an eye out for Peacocks wandering the lawns, as well as that you will visit the church where Claire stood trial for being a Witch and visit the town that is the set for Inverness in the 40’s and 60’s, to fans of the series this location will seem very familiar. You will travel through the spectacularly picturesque Cairngorms today on your way up north, but before that you have the option of either a short walk in beautiful Dunkeld or visiting the fictional Craigh na Dun where Claire from the Outlander series was transported back in time.

After your drive through the National Park you will be dropped at Culloden House Hotel by your Driver/Guide. Long before it was a luxury hotel Culloden House was HQ of Bonnie Prince Charlie before the battle of Culloden, this is where you will stay for 2 nights to really connect with the history and immerse you in the drama of the area. A stay here sets you up perfectly for tomorrow’s visit to the battlefield of Culloden.

Day 3 - After an early breakfast we will leave the Jacobite HQ where you spent the night to take in the history that is pivotal to Outlander, the battle of Culloden. Here you will be able to get a feel for the atmosphere and explore the battle site with your guide as well as visit the visitors centre to find out more about the last battle fought on British soil. Today you will also visit a prehistoric site, thousands of years old, here you will see the standing stones placed there at that time. You will also visit Beauly Priory and Wardlaw Mausoleum, resting place of the ‘old fox’ Clan Chief of the Fraser Clan, Jacobite leader and last man to be beheaded in Britain. After a day of discovering and unlocking the history, myth and legend on which Outlander is based you will be taken back to Culloden House Hotel by your Driver/Guide to relax in the luxurious surroundings for one final night.

Day 4 - In the morning after breakfast you will visit the real town of Inverness, a town that features heavily in the books and series, here you will have the chance wander along the Ness Islands walk before being taken to a viewpoint of Loch Ness (Nessie sighting is never guaranteed). After which we will visit the Highland Folk Museum, where history will come to life, actors in period costume show you what life would have been like hundreds of years ago. We will cross over to the west of Scotland, giving you a chance to marvel at the wonderful scenery on the way to Glenfinnan, made famous by the Harry Potter Railway line scene, here you will recognise the viaduct used on the films. Glenfinnan is also the site of the raising of the Stewart standard by Charles Edward Stewart otherwise known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, the catalyst to the ill-fated Jacobite rebellion leading to the final battle fought on British soil, Culloden. You will see the spot where that is marked by the statue of the lone Highlander. Tonight you will stay in Glencoe area in another wonderful Heritage property which was once the home of a laird and is now a luxury 5-star hotel.

Day 5 - After Breakfast we will drive through Glencoe taking in all its rugged beauty while you find out more about the Clan feuds and the politics and history that gave rise to the tensions between Clans. After leaving Glencoe you will enter Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park where you will be able to view the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond. While in the national park you have the option to either visit the grave of infamous outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor or take a short walk in the park before the final visit of the tour. How else to finish a tour of Scotland than with a wee dram and a tour of a whisky distillery. In the late afternoon you will be dropped off in Glasgow or Edinburgh by your Driver/Guide.

This ‘Outlander’ star suggests Taylor Swift will meet him and ‘forget’ Travis Kelce

"Outlander" star Sam Heughan

"Outlander" star Sam Heughan during Season 5 marketing shoot

Is it safe to say actor Sam Heughan might have a thing for global mega star Taylor Swift ?

Some might jump the gun and think so.

Swift is set to perform this weekend in Edinburgh, Scotland, for her “Eras Tour” and the “ Outlander ” star plans to attend.

In a video posted to Instagram on June 5, the 44-year-old actor shared with fans how excited he was to see the “Wildest Dreams” singer grace the stage this weekend, as he plans on going to the concert with his “Outlander” co-stars.

The television star even went above and beyond to welcome the pop star to Edinburgh.

“We’re going to go see Taylor Swift play in Scotland and I think most of the cast is going,” Heughan told the camera while fully dressed in costume. “She obviously doesn’t know this, but when she comes to Scotland and she sees me in the audience, she’s going to forget all about ‘him’ and fall for a man in a ginger wig.”

When the star said “him,” he was clearly referring to her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce .

“How can she resist?” Heughan smiled before jokingly saying, “You know, she’s going to shake him off and take me out instead. I’m really excited!”

Swift’s song, “ Ready For It ” plays in the background. He even captioned the post, “Welcome to Scotland Taylor! JAMMF is a Swiftie.”

Fans then flocked to the comments section of the post and reacted to the star’s lighthearted jab.

“I love it when famous people are fans of other famous people. We are all just human after all. I hope you get to meet her in person, Sam. Either way; ENJOY!!” one person wrote.

Another fan suggested that Heughan take a page out of Kelce’s book to get the pop star’s attention.

“Make her a friendship bracelet, Sam — I hear that works,” they suggested.

“Ummmm Taylor what are you waiting for?!?!?!?!?!” another asked.

Swift is set to perform at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium today through Sunday in Edinburgh, with Paramore as her opening act.

Travis Kelce has some competition.

“Outlander” star Sam Heughan joked he plans to steal Taylor Swift from the Kansas City Chiefs star at her Eras Tour stop in Edinburgh, Scotland, over the weekend.

“We’re gonna go see Taylor Swift play in Scotland,” the Scottish actor — who was in costume as his “Outlander” character Jamie Fraser — said in a clip posted to Instagram Wednesday. “I think most of the cast is going.”

“She obviously doesn’t know this, but when she comes to Scotland and she sees me in the audience, she’s gonna forget all about … [Kelce] and fall for a man in a ginger wig,” Heughan, 44, quipped as her song “…Ready For It” played in the background.

“How could she resist? She’s gonna shake him off and take me out instead. I’m really excited.”

Heughan captioned the clip, “Welcome to Scotland Taylor. JAMMF is a Swiftie.”

The “Young Alexander the Great” star might struggle to take Swift, 34, away from Kelce, 34, as they’ve been going strong since last summer.

Coincidentally, the two connected after the NFL star attended the hitmaker’s Eras Tour stop in Kansas City, Mo., in July 2023 and attempted to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number.

“I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Kelce said on his “New Heights” podcast at the time.

“So, I was a little butthurt that I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”

Taylor Swift

From there, the “Cruel Summer” songstress decided to take a chance on Kelce after he “put [her] on blast” on his podcast.

Swift and the tight end kept their relationship under the radar for a few months before going public in September 2023.

Sources told Page Six the two have plans to get engaged this summer.
