Egyptian Visits for Schools

Invite Cleopatra and her priest into your school and be transported back in time to the year 31BCE.  Cleopatra is the famous Queen of the Nile and this exciting Egyptian day promises to add learning and wonder to your topic.

The Egyptian School visit can also be delivered by King Ptolemy the Saviour as an alternative!

The Egyptian school visit can be booked for one or several classes for a full day or a half day. We have worked with up to four classes before.

Below is an outline of a typical Egyptian Visit.

Introduction

The Living Isis (usually) introduces herself and provides a general background on the time.

Every day clothing, objects and way of life are discussed as well as Egyptian Gods and Goddesses.  The introduction usually features the Creation Myth also.

The Mummy Maker

Mummification.

In this session, children will meet our specially made life-size Mummification dummy.  It also features a ready made 6ft Mummy; a coffin and all the equipment needed for mummifying, as well as the opportunity for children to create their own replica artefacts from clay.

The priest (or Cleo!) takes the children through the complicated process of Mummification, using his recently dead friend for the children to practise on.  The corpse dummy is designed to allow for children to take out organs for storage in the appropriate canopic jar etc.

Volunteers are asked variously to join in with aspects of the process, wearing various masks and even to stand in as a sacrificial bull – all will become clear.  By the end, the mummy should be ready to place in its sarcophagus.  This session incorporates art/DT skills.

Work Along The Nile

This session is structured in three sections and offers an amazing opportunity to handle many authentic objects most of which are of museum quality.  In groups, children are asked to problem-solve, working together to figure out clues as to which countries to trade and barter with for goods.

Then, they must pause their ordinary lives, as Egyptian citizens are asked to help to build pyramids as part of their taxes.  Using fantastic kits, sourced internationally, children either build a pyramid or take part in a traditional artistic challenge.

Finally, groups handle a remarkable collection of replica artefacts, discussing each object to learn its use and the work role (or job) that matches it.

This session helps children to understand ordinary working lives of Egyptians and incorporates art/DT skills.

Egyptian Scribe

Children craft their own papyrus from strips of paper (to be provided in school, as well as glue and black paint, please) and then leave to dry.

Egyptian Hieroglyphic Writing is explored, with an explanation of

its decoding via the Rosetta Stone (if teacher-led) and/or its use in schooling of important children for official positions in society.

Children use our (highly coveted) class set of Egyptian Hieroglyphic Stencils to learn about hieroglyphs’ correspondence to individual letters and write their own name.

Various tools including an authentic Scribe’s Writing Set are displayed and children use similar reed pens and paint to draw up an official document of their choosing (ideally on their papyrus if it is dry) – name and address is suggested.  This session incorporates art/DT.

Pastimes, Toys & Games

Egyptian pastimes are discussed and authentically reproduced toys are shown.  Cleopatra teaches the children some Egyptian dancing.

Children will have the opportunity to play with old Egyptian toys such as whipping tops and to try some games (with teachers’ permissions) eg. leapfrog and tug of war.  We bring a class set of solid wood Mancalas for children to challenge each other at “the oldest game in the world” which has been found by archaeologists carved into the stone of the Great Pyramid at Giza.

Storytelling

Egyptian myths & storytelling.

ancient egypt school trips yorkshire

We always end the day with storytelling as a whole group, ideally fitting in a myth, told traditionally as well as one of our much-appreciated “silly stories” when all can join in together.

We, Greg and Lisa, work fully in role as Egyptians.  This means that we use our subject knowledge to respond to questions as Egyptians would do.  This historical interpreter’s commitment to authenticity is tempered with a teacher’s sense of appropriateness though – so we do not swear (as some reenactors will in school, claiming that this was the way it was!).  Our focus is on the educational experience for the children and what serves them best, so the sessions are interactive and involve everyone.

The day is fully risk assessed and this can be emailed upon request.  Confirmation of booking is taken as a contract between the school and The Specialists and acceptance of our T & C’s .

Greg and Lisa McCarthy have many years of experience working with children. Greg is a teacher and Lisa a former Occupational Therapist in learning disabilities. Both have DBS  and public liability insurance.

Replica resources are meticulously researched and as authentic to the period as possible; many of museum standard.  We will bring real animal hide and animal bone objects.  We understand if anyone is sensitive to this (Lisa is a vegetarian in real life!) but please be prepared.  Our bone replica artefacts really are made of bone – not plastic!  Whilst the day features a real African Gazelle skin, for obvious reasons, the leopard “skin” for the Mummification session is faux fur!

Egyptian school visits for education.  We provide a living history and reenactment service as historical interpreters focusing on the  What can we find out about Ancient Egypt from what has survived topic.  As re-enactors, we use storytelling/Egyptian myths,  dance, writing using reeds and artefacts such as toys and games, full mummification kit etc. to bring the excitement of real history to your classroom.

Some of the locations we travel to for our Egyptians workshops are:

East-Midlands, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Leamington, Leicester, Hinckley, Nottingham, Coventry, Birmingham, Tamworth, Derbyshire, , Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Swadlincote, Nottinghamshire, Derby, Mansfield, Worksop, Newark, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, Coalville, Lutterworth, Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Nuneaton,  Solihull, Warwick, Rugby, West Midlands.

The workshop

Bring your topic to life with our much-loved Ancient Egyptian workshop, that gives pupils the amazing opportunity to handle real Ancient Egyptian artefacts.

Learn how to think like archaeologists whilst examining these amazing objects for clues about the lives and beliefs of the people who once owned them.

After a short introduction to ancient Egyptian religion and the mummification process, children will work in small groups to investigate objects in detail, from a headrest to a death mask to a shabti, before sharing their findings with the whole class. We will finish by discussing the relatively recent journey of the objects from Egypt to the Horniman and consider how some Egyptian people may feel about this today.

We also offer a virtual ancient Egypt workshop.

Learning Objectives

  • Pupils will understand the significance of mummification within ancient Egyptian religion
  • Pupils will learn how to carefully and respectfully handle Museum objects to prevent damage.
  • Pupils will explore how to examine ancient Egyptian objects for clues about their original use, significance and more recent history.

Please note that our Natural History Gallery is now closed as part of a major 2 year redevelopment, Nature + Love. The rest of our Galleries, displays and Gardens will be open as usual, with plenty across the site to support your topic (from our free Animal Walk, to our World Gallery). Our schools workshops are unaffected.

We will be opening a new, free temporary exhibition about the natural world, animals and their habitats, in September 2024.

Primary schools - Ancient Egypt

How can a visit support learning for this topic.

You can visit our highly interactive Ancient Egypt gallery, which helps pupils understand what life was like in Ancient Egypt. You can interact with real objects from Ancient Egypt and explore their world. The gallery is split into two sections: exploring Ancient Egyptian opinions of life, and the afterlife, respectively. Symbolically bridging the two sections is the Journey to the afterlife tunnel. The journey to the afterlife tunnel is a small, darkened space, with video projections and an accompanying soundtrack. It provides an immersive sensory experience, this may not suit all groups/individuals.

Please note, there are human remains on display in this gallery. You can see our human remains policy here.

We have  workshops  (led by museum staff) and  bookable resources  (to support you during school-led time in the galleries) for this topic. We also have  printable activities  that you can use in school-led time.

Scroll down for more information.

How much will a visit cost?

School-led visits and workshops are free.

The only activity in the museum that incurs a cost is visiting the planetarium.

The price for a planetarium showing starts at £37, with some discounts available.  Find more information on the planetarium, including detailed prices, show information and trailers here.

When can we visit, and how do we make a booking enquiry?

If you would like a workshop as part of your day:  Tuesdays and Fridays in term-time.

If you don’t want to book a workshop, and want to be self-led in the galleries:  We can typically accommodate you on a term-time date of your choice.  Please still book with us so we can organise coat and bag storage, a lunch space, and greeting you on arrival.

Yorkshire schoolchildren uncover their Ancient Egyptian heritage

5th October 2017

We are delighted to be supporting school workshops to help Yorkshire schoolchildren learn about Ancient Egypt.

Our patron and Egyptologist Joann Fletcher will be hosting a series of school workshops for primary school children to enhance their learning of ancient Egyptian civilisation.

The workshops, supported by Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust, are part of Barnsley Museums’ celebration of the history of ancient Egypt across three exhibitions at Experience Barnsley, The Cooper Gallery and Cannon Hall Museum.

During the school sessions, Joann will take the children on a tour of the museums and galleries. The children will also learn about ancient Egyptian culture and beliefs with a focus on the sacred scarab beetle and will make their own scarab amulet out of clay with the Museums’ learning team.

The workshops support the national curriculum, which includes a requirement for children to study an ancient civilisation. Funding from Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust has been used to buy resources for the workshops, including clay and clay tools.

Professor Joann Fletcher, said: “It’s really important that schools have the ability to come and engage with exhibitions such as Ancient Egypt in Barnsley so that local schoolchildren can understand their heritage.

“There are magnificent treasures to be found in the town and right across Yorkshire and it’s fantastic to have such brilliant resources on our doorstep.

“The exhibition and workshops allow children to think that one day they could study this subject and become an Egyptologist, an archaeologist or anything else that is their particular passion. This belief is made possible thanks to the wonderful support of the Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust.”

Joann, who was born in Barnsley and is a professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York, has spent the last thirty years studying Yorkshire’s Egyptian past. She has now brought together the objects included in the exhibition for the very first time, telling stories that will bring ancient Egypt to life.

‘Gods’ Land in God’s County: Ancient Egypt in Yorkshire’ can be seen at Experience Barnsley until January 2018, along with a stunning collection of watercolours and drawings at The Cooper Gallery by Barnsley-born artist and archaeologist Harold Jones.

The Egyptian theme continues at Cannon Hall in October with the arrival of ‘Resurrecting Ancient Egypt’, featuring images by Jennifer Robertson and Lynne Fletcher of Kyte Photography.

To book a school workshop contact Barnsley Museums Learning Team:  [email protected] or call 01226 774872.

The Tutankhamun Exhibition has become recognised by schools from over much of England, as a major resource in the study of Ancient Egypt. School children can experience the mystery and wonder of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb first hand. The Exhibition - the most comprehensive and innovative on the boy pharaoh outside of Egypt - actually recreates the tomb, treasures, and mummy of Tutankhamun.

A fantastic trip (we come every year) and as always children have found very informative. Enjoyed by all! Thank you. St Mary's First School, West Moors

Schools

The Tutankhamun Exhibition was created in 1987 in the footsteps of the famous 1972 London exhibition at the British Museum. However, because the Exhibition uses unique, accurate and perfect facsimiles of the king's treasures, it has been possible to recreate the ante-chamber and burial chamber of the tomb exactly as it was when it was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922; thus capturing a moment in time forever. The Tutankhamun Exhibition is a permanent exhibition situated in the centre of Dorchester, the county town of Dorset. The Exhibition has a thriving schools programme.

The Exhibition starts with a wealth of information on various aspects of Ancient Egypt including the Rosetta Stone and Mummification; the historical & political background to the life of Tutankhamun; and the search for, and discovery of, his tomb. Next is a unique recreation of Tutankhamun's mummy. The body has been replicated using special techniques to exactly re-create the original, which now lies out of sight in the sarcophagus in Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

The children learnt so much! The introductory talk gave a really useful context, and the worksheets provided an invaluable focus. Thank you. Marshwood School

Schools

The reconstruction of the Ante-Chamber is filled with its treasures just as it was in 1922 and even the pleasant odours of the unguents & oils have been reproduced. The Burial Chamber depicts the coffins being raised from the sarcophagus and offers school pupils an unparalleled experience. These unique factors have made The Tutankhamun Exhibition famous in its own right. It has been extensively featured on numerous national and international television programmes.

With the inclusion of Ancient Egypt in the National Curriculum, and in particular the emphasis on Tutankhamun, the Exhibition has become a 'must' for schools, a wonderful resource to which children can really relate. For those thinking of bringing a party, it is advisable to book well in advance, otherwise it may not be possible to obtain the dates you require.

Exploring Yorkshire’s Unique Connection to Ancient Egypt and the Field of Egyptology

ancient egypt school trips yorkshire

Separated by a lot of distance and even more time, Yorkshire and the oases of ancient Egypt couldn’t seem further apart. Yet, Yorkshire has more than a few remnants from its Egyptomania in the past, and it’s part of an eye-widening thesis that North African mummies have been buried in northern soil. Here’s a brief exploration of Yorkshire’s unique connection to one of the world’s most mysterious ancient societies.

Ancient Egyptian Influence

The influence of ancient Egypt needs little introduction. Today, so much is unknown about its centuries-spanning kingdoms. That doesn’t stop its unique visuals, animalistic pantheon and spooky mummies from being a cultural mainstay in entertainment media. Symbols like the ankh persist today while movies like The Mummy broke the box office on release, and there’s even a whole genre of iGaming inspired by Egypt’s recognisable sights. More broadly, the great deserts are represented in games like the Sahara Riches Cash Collect slot , while others use symbols like the eye of Horus or Anubis on their reels.

Alongside the Romans and the Greeks, ancient Egypt has captured the imagination of a lot of modern media. Just like those cultures, however, there can be a discrepancy between what you see on screen and the real facts of history. That’s something Yorkshire, and the rest of Britain, learned in 1700s when Egyptomania gripped many Western countries.

Yorkshire’s Egyptomania

Starting in the 1700s, it kicked into overdrive in the 1800s and 1900s, when modern Egyptology began. The mysterious buildings of Egypt inspired works of architecture, best seen by the pyramid-shaped graves that dot Britain. In Yorkshire, pyramidologist Charles Piazzi Smyth (known for his accurate Giza pyramid measurements) was given his own pyramid grave in Sharow, near Ripon.

Elsewhere, a pyramid marks the gate of Castle Howard. It also has an obelisk, another remnant of Egyptomania that you can find plenty of in Yorkshire. Another one is right in the middle of Ripon’s market square, with more obelisks in Sheffield, Birdwell and more notably, the Scarborough War Memorial. Many of these buildings were designed by local Yorkshire nobles, or their architects, who were influenced by Egypt’s striking architecture.

It was long thought that this was Egypt’s only influence on Yorkshire and surrounding areas. However, more recent findings have unearthed mummies in the area.

The Yorkshire Mummies

Yorkshire Egyptologist Joann Fletcher has turned her eye back home in recent decades, investigating Egypt’s influence on the North. She’s hosted art galleries that show off Egypt-inspired architecture, including the examples we mentioned above. However, it’ll be the Yorkshire mummies that turn the most heads.

More than sixty mummies have been found in or around York, more than any other mummified remains found in Britain. What’s more, they showed evidence of being worked on with Mediterranean tools, and some appear to have come from North Africa. So how did African mummies arrive in Yorkshire?

If you know your history, the answer here is simple – the Romans. The Roman Empire spanned North Africa at its heights and, quite famously, it all started when the Romans put an end to Cleopatra’s Ptolemaic Kingdom. Cleopatra seduced Caesar, and then Mark Antony after Caesar’s assassination, and the War of Actium followed . It ended with Caesar’s chosen heir Octavian seizing Egypt for the Romans, then crowning himself as Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. The Pax Romana followed – 200 years of peace and expansion.

In that period – 27 BC to 180 AD – both the Hadrian and Antonine Walls were built as Rome continued the occupation of Britannia. Many Roman legions were sent to Britain, which would have included a few soldiers recruited from places like Carthage in Tunisia and of course, Egypt. But they didn’t just bring their bones, they brought their customs and other keepsakes like silver coins adorned with Cleopatra’s visage. Per Fletcher’s claims, these Egyptian imports include the northernmost temple dedicated to the Cult of Serapis and Isis worship .

These rare glimpses of ancient Egypt seem to have been captured more in Yorkshire than anywhere else in Britain. That’s no doubt because the land was the northern reach of Roman occupation, a shield against the unromanised people to the north. That meant a lot of Roman legions stomping about, and a lot of foreign soldiers shipped in to reinforce them.
