Copenhagen, Denmark

The myths and lore of Copenhagen and its laidback ambiance have attracted international tourists for years. Visit the Little Mermaid statue commemorating Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale. Art lovers, spend an afternoon surrounded by eccentric and classic sculptures at Vigeland Park. Museum hop from Oslo’s Natural Museum to the Edvard Munch Museum, which is home to the world-famous painting “The Scream.” During your day in port, visit the Ice Bar, made completely of ice.

Longyearbyen is perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll down the main street and you might see Svalbard reindeer pass by. Although wild, they’re curious and gentle.

Before boarding your ship in the afternoon and continuing your Arctic discovery, join an included excursion and get a glimpse of this amazing polar bear–inspired region at the top of the world. And if you’d like to discover even more of Longyearbyen’s special surroundings, simply join our optional Pre-Program.

Relaxing at sea

Getting ready for Greenland – Kalaallit Nunaat

As we sail into the Greenland Sea on our way to the world’s largest island, it’s time to relax, find your sea legs and get acquainted with the onboard facilities.

The Expedition Team will give talks about your upcoming adventure and explain the protocols of respectfully visiting wildlife habitats and Indigenous Arctic communities. In the lecture hall, you’ll find out what to expect in the epic landscapes of East Greenland National Park and the stunning fjords of Scoresby Sund.

If you’re feeling active, head to the gym and work out with a view. On the other hand, you could try out the sauna, relax in a hot tub, indulge yourself at the onboard eateries or just find a quiet corner to read a book with a hot drink. Love science? Then join one of our onboard Citizen Science projects, a fun and engaging way to contribute to global research.

Northeast Greenland National Park and Scoresby Sund expedition days

Explore the wild east

We’ll spend the next 10 days exploring Greenland’s remote and pristine east coast. Extending for over 1,740 miles from north to south, this long stretch of coast is cold, isolated and remote, even by Greenlandic standards. The south-flowing East Greenland Current brings lots of sea ice directly from the Arctic Ocean, challenging human settlement but creating a haven for ice-dependent wildlife, including the polar bear.

Local weather and ice conditions will dictate our exact route, but our plan is to sail first to Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest fjord system. You’ll feel a deep sense of serenity in this wild and rugged region with white and blue icebergs floating in mirror-like waters surrounded by looming mountains. If conditions permit, we’ll visit Ittoqqortoormiit – the most remote inhabited community in the western hemisphere.

Should the sea ice be favorable, we’ll continue our journey north to the beautiful Northeast Greenland National Park – the world’s largest national park. Visiting this fragile Artic wilderness is a rare privilege as only a few visitors are permitted here each year.

Apart from old trapper huts, some science research stations, and a military outpost, there are very few traces of human life in this 375,000 square mile park. Be assured that this is one of the quietest places on Earth, and you’ll enjoy a feeling of great peace as we explore this beautiful wilderness.

As this is an expedition cruise, the Captain and Expedition Team will guide us to the most favorable spots on a day-by-day basis. Our goal will be to pack in as many shore landings, small boat cruises, nature walks, kayaking adventures and wildlife sightings as possible.

Denmark Strait

Heading to Iceland

After exploring the remote beauty of Greenland, we’ll set our course back to Iceland. Spend the days at sea recapping your experiences with your new friends, studying nature in the Science Center, listening to a lecture or two, or just relaxing on deck. Look out for the seabirds that follow our ship and keep an eye out for whales.

East Greenland’s beauty is sure to have left its mark on you, so reflect on what you’ve seen – from the delicate ecology of the fjord systems to the ethereal elegance of the floating ice.

And if you want to discover more of Iceland, you can join our optional Post-Program before you head home. Or simply extend your stay to enjoy more of Reykjavík and its surrounding geothermal attractions. It’s a great place to end an epic journey!

Coastal cruise in Norway

Geirangerfjord, norway in a nutshell®, flåm railway (flåmsbana), the golden circle.

A day-by-day plan to guide your Nordic adventure.

Day 1: Welcome to Sweden

Welcome to Stockholm ! After clearing customs and collecting your luggage, make your way into the city centre and check in to your accommodation. You could call a taxi or board the express train from the airport to Stockholm Central Station. Or, for a more direct and comfortable ride, we will be happy to organise a private airport transfer for you.

If your flight landed early in the day, you can spend the afternoon exploring Sweden’s beautiful capital. First, stroll down Drottninggatan street to discover charming shops and feel the vibe of the city.

Then, go for a walk in nearby Östermalm , where you will find interesting boutiques, cafés, and restaurants offering a perfect introduction to Scandinavian culture. You might want to stop in a café to experience Swedish “fika”, a traditional tea or coffee break.

Spend the night in Stockholm.

Day 2: The Charms of Swedish Culture

Today, you’ll enjoy plenty of time exploring the heart of scenic Stockholm. This walkable city is perfect to discover on foot. Start by exploring the historic and mesmerising  Old Town (Gamla   Stan) , where you will find the  Royal Palace , the nation’s parliament, ancient churches, beautiful cobblestone streets and medieval houses.

After some time in Gamla Stan, take a short ferry ride to the nearby island  Djurgården . This is a cultural oasis offering something for everyone. Here you will find the  Abba Museum , celebrating Sweden’s most famous band, the  Nordic Museum , the  Gröna Lund  amusement park, and the  Skansen  open-air museum. This island is the ideal spot to spend a leisurely afternoon.

Day 3: Travel from Stockholm to Lovely Copenhagen

After breakfast, say goodbye to Stockholm and head to the airport to catch a short flight to  Copenhagen , the capital of Denmark.

After settling in at your hotel, set off on a walk along the enchanting old harbour area  Nyhavn . This famous district is lined with colourful houses and lively restaurants beside rows of docked boats.

From here, you can easily explore the highlights of this iconic city. Walk the narrow side streets, visit some charming shops, and try a delicious and traditional open-faced sandwich, Smørrebrød.

In the evening, you can visit the charming amusement park  Tivoli Gardens . It’s a lovely place to admire traditional architecture and gardens and to enjoy some carnival rides.

Spend the night in Copenhagen.

*It’s possible to travel by train instead of by plane between Stockholm and Copenhagen. For more details, check out today’s optional extras.

Day 4: A Day in Captivating Copenhagen

You have the whole day to explore the enchanting streets of Copenhagen . The best way to see the city is by foot, so head back to the cobblestoned streets that characterise the city centre.

There are many regal landmarks in Denmark’s historic capital, including  Amalienborg Palace  and the stately Christiansborg Palace . Later, be sure to walk past the famous  Little Mermaid  statue by the waterfront.

For delightful views of the city, join an optional cruise from the harbour and admire the beauty of the city from the water. Later, stroll along  Ströget  street for some shopping and grab something delicious to eat at Torvehallerne food hall.

Day 5: Set Sail for Norway

Spend the morning seeing some more of Copenhagen. If you haven’t already, you might want to check out the observatory of  The Round Tower , the most famous church in Copenhagen  Church of Our Saviour , the impeccable King’s Garden, and the grand  Rosenborg Castle.

Later, it’s time to board your DFDS cruise to Oslo. The ship will sail you gently up the  Kattegat Sund  on its way to Norway’s capital city. Enjoy dinner in one of the on-board restaurants, check out the entertainment on board or just relax and watch the sunset from the deck.

Spend the night on the DFDS cruise.

Day 6: Enjoy Enchanting Oslo

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast on board as the ship docks in vibrant  Oslo . You then have the whole day to explore Norway’s capital at your leisure. Depending on your interests, there are plenty of activities and attractions to enjoy in this dynamic city.

First, take a stroll along the Karl Johans gate main street. Then make your way along the Aker Brygge marina and past the beautiful Oslo Opera House.

You could choose to visit the beautiful Vigeland Sculpture Park, tour the Royal Palace , explore the Akershus fortress or view Oslo City Hall. See the sights at your own pace or join an optional bus tour.

Other attractions include the Fram Museum , displaying a world-famous polar exploration ship, and the collection of works by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch at the Munch Museum .

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 7: Journey Over the Mountains

This morning, head to Oslo Central Station and board the Dovrebanen train. This train route passes over the Dovre mountain plateau, through historic towns and nature preservations. You’ll witness incredible variations in terrain and altitude along the way.

Arriving in Dombås, you will change trains and join the Raumabanen Railway. This is often called the most spectacular train line in Norway, with endless sights to enjoy. Look out for the train’s dramatic crossing of Kylling Bridge, with the thundering waters of Vermafossen falls below.

The train takes you to Åndalsnes, where you will disembark. From here, board a bus to journey past more dramatic landscapes on your way to the vibrant port town of Ålesund.

Spend the night in Ålesund.

Day 8: Geiranger Fjord Cruise

Spend the morning exploring picturesque Ålesund and learning about its history.

After a large fire destroyed part of the town, it was rebuilt in 1904. This means some of Ålesund’s architecture is strikingly different from other Norwegian towns. Admire the Art Nouveau turrets, spires and ornamentation on the buildings as you explore. It feels like walking through a fairytale.

In the afternoon, it’s time to explore the majestic Geirangerfjord by cruise. This UNESCO-protected area features peaceful waters framed by towering mountains. Look out for magnificent waterfalls, including the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil .

In the late afternoon, you’ll return to Ålesund. Spend the evening relaxing in a restaurant near the harbour until its time to board your Hurtigruten or Havila Voyages cruise. The ship will depart shortly before midnight.

Spend the night aboard  the coastal cruise .

Want to know which cruise you will be joining? Check out sailing departures per tour .

Day 9: Sail to Historic Bergen

During the night, your cruise will call at the towns of Torvik, Maløy and Florø as the route weaves through islets and stunning landscapes.

Finally, you’ll come into view of your destination – Bergen . Here you will disembark to enjoy some leisure time in the “Capital of the Fjords”. Despite being an international city, Bergen has all the charms of a small town.

Here you’ll find  Bryggen , a city quarter that is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, with remarkably preserved old houses. Elsewhere, explore the lively fish and flower market, board cable cars offering stunning views, and discover great city museums.

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 10: Norway in a Nutshell by Land and Sea

Today, you embark on one of the most scenic parts of your adventure so far. First, say goodbye to Bergen and catch the early Bergensbanen train, travelling past majestic mountains and plunging valleys to the town of Voss.

At Voss, change to a bus through more vibrant landscapes to  Gudvangen harbour. Here, you will board a spellbinding 2-hour fjord cruise to  Flåm , sailing through  Nærøyfjord , the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage site is part of Sognefjord , Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. Prepare to be awe-struck by mighty peaks, tumbling waterfalls and small farms dotting the mountainsides.

Finally, the boat sails up  Aurlandsfjord  to Flåm, a charming village, where you will spend the evening.

Spend the night in Flåm.

For a more comfortable experience, we recommend booking a luggage transfer for the journey between Bergen and Oslo.

Day 11: The Flåm Railway Experience

Enjoy a leisurely morning exploring more of Flåm, taking in its natural beauty and enjoying some of its cultural offerings.

In the afternoon, it’s time for you to experience the famous Flåm Railway firsthand. Settle into your seat and enjoy spectacular scenery as the train climbs 900 metres (2,952 feet) in just 20 kilometres (12 miles). During the journey, there will be photo stops for you to capture some images of your breathtaking surroundings. The winding train track leads to Myrdal Station, where you’ll disembark.

In Myrdal, switch to the Bergensbanen train, which will carry you over the mountainous rooftop of Norway. Along the way, you’ll pass through the charming villages of  Geilo  and Gol, before you arrive in Oslo.

Enjoy your last evening exploring Norway’s capital.

Day 12: Beautiful Oslo to Idyllic Iceland

This morning, enjoy some last-minute shopping, visit one of Oslo’s many museums or relax at a café, before heading to the airport for your flight to Iceland.

On arrival at Keflavik International Airport, you will be greeted by a driver who will take you to your accommodation in  Reykjavík . After settling in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore.

We recommend strolling the streets of the charming capital city, visiting museums, and exploring landmarks like  Hallgrímskirkja  and the  Sun Voyager .

Spend the next five nights in Reykjavik.

Day 13: Reykjavík City Walk & Blue Lagoon

After breakfast, enjoy an exclusive walking tour in the heart of Reykjavík. You’ll join a small group and a friendly guide to discover the bustling downtown area.

Some highlights you’ll see on this tour include the Harpa Concert Hall, the old harbour area, the parliament building, the Tjörnin pond and more! It’s the perfect way to get some insider knowledge on hidden gems in the city.

In the afternoon, a bus transfer will take you to the famous  Blue Lagoon  spa. Here, you can bathe in a geothermal outdoor pool, with silica-rich waters that are soothing for your skin.

After relaxing in the warm waters, you might want to dine at the luxurious Lava Restaurant on-site, before taking the bus back to Reykjavík.

Spend the night in Reykjavík.

Day 14: Exploring the Golden Circle

Today, you will visit some of Iceland’s most famous attractions on a small guided group tour of the classic “Golden Circle” route. Your day starts with a drive to the fascinating town of Hveragerði, which is built upon significant geothermal energy.

After a short stop here, the adventure continues. One of the many highlights you’ll see today is the impressive Kerið Crater. Other attractions include the magical two-tiered  Gullfoss  waterfall and the spouting hot springs of  Geysir . While Geysir lies dormant, its neighbour Strokkur erupts every few minutes, gushing steam and water high into the air.

The last stop of the day is  Þingvellir National Park , a place of great historical and geological significance. It is also one of Iceland’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Þingvellir is the site of the country’s first parliament and is located along the edge of the great rift between the Eurasian and American tectonic plates.

Day 15: The South Coast - Glaciers and Black Sand Beaches

Enjoy a guided group tour along the striking south coast of Iceland on another day of adventure.

Your journey starts with a stop at the picture-perfect, 60-metre-high (197-foot-high)  Skógafoss  waterfall. Next you’ll stop at  Reynisfjara , a hauntingly beautiful black sand beach. You will then continue towards the town of Vík where you’ll make a photo stop at the local church, which offers expansive views of the landscape.

Then it is time to head back towards the capital along the south coast. You will stop at  Sólheimajökull glacier  where you will learn everything about glaciers and the area. The last highlight of the day is the picturesque  Seljalandsfoss  waterfall, which is 40 metres (131 feet) high. Its main attraction, besides the scenery, is the pathway leading behind the waterfall, giving you a chance to admire the falls from all angles.

Day 16: Your Iceland Adventure

Today is up to you! You could choose to join an exciting optional activity this morning. Some options include snorkelling in the Silfra fissure at Þingvellir National Park, riding a stocky and adorable Icelandic horse, or even venturing inside a glacier on the “Into the Glacier” tour.

If you are looking for a more leisurely day, you could choose to relax in Reykjavík and explore some more of the city. Options include visiting a local swimming pool, checking out museums, or strolling the charming streets to see where the day takes you.

Your travel consultant can fulfil customised requests such as renting a car or booking extra activities to enjoy.

Day 17: Departure from Iceland

Your adventure in Scandinavia and Iceland has come to an end. If your flight is in the afternoon, you will have time to visit some more of Reykjavik’s boutiques or museums. Or, you could enjoy one last exciting optional extra activity.

Later, depart to Keflavik International Airport via a semi-private transfer in time for your flight.

Optional extras

We recommend adding your extra activities to the tour now for the best booking experience and to secure your spot, as activities are likely to sell out.

Essential information

We recommend that you read carefully through the following information before booking this independent tour of Scandinavia. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect. You’ll also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our online Scandinavia Travel Guide .

We recommend you wait to book flights to Scandinavia, and other parts of your travels, until we can confirm your desired travel dates for this tour. This is due to varying availability for this package. Contact us for more details.

On this Nordic adventure, you’ll combine an independent tour of Scandinavia with a road trip in Iceland.

The first part of your trip will see you travelling across the Scandinavian region, from country to country. We’ll book your accommodation and transport across the region, as per the itinerary. You’ll explore independently in each destination.

Then, catch a flight to the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland. Here you’ll pick up a rental vehicle and drive the top spots of this gem. We’ll book your flight to Iceland, your airport transfers, accommodation and rental car for a smooth travel experience.

The transfers between your hotel and train stations, cruise ports or airports are not included with this package.

Usually your accommodation will be within short walking distance from train stations or cruise ports. When travelling to airports for flights between destinations, we recommend taking the convenient local public transport. But you could also get a taxi from your accommodation if you prefer.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect when you land in Sweden?

After picking up your luggage, you’ll make your way to your accommodation. Public transport is easy to access and convenient in Stockholm. Or you could catch a taxi.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2–4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel until check-in. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your trip if you’d like an early check-in.

Yes, you’ll enjoy a flight to travel from Stockholm in Sweden to Copenhagen in Denmark. The direct journey takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes.

Most flights will depart around midday, but in some cases you may be booked on a morning or evening flight. Your travel consultant will book the best flight time for you in light of your travel dates.

Each traveller in your party will be able to bring 1 checked bag, with a weight limit of 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Your carry-on bag weight limit will be 8 kilograms (17 pounds).

Please note that transfers from your hotel to Stockholm Arlanda Airport and from Copenhagen Airport to your accommodation are not included.

If you prefer to travel from Stockholm to Copenhagen by train instead of by plane, we would be happy to arrange this for you. Simply select the “train” option during the online booking steps.

It’s good to note that in the summer months, train companies conduct track maintenance, so there might be changes to the route. The length of your journey may vary.

Train tickets can often only be booked 30 days prior to your travel date. While your travel consultant waits for train tickets to become available, they will plan the rest of your tour. As soon as your tickets have been booked, your travel consultant will let you know all the details.

After your stay in Copenhagen, you’ll travel to Oslo on an overnight cruise. You’ll depart in the mid-afternoon and arrive in Norway the following morning.

We’ll book you a private cabin with ensuite facilities and a small window. In the morning before docking in Oslo, your breakfast is included.

There are 2 ships operating the route, Pearl Seaways and Crown Seaways. On board both, you will find facilities such as lounges, restaurants, bars and a viewing deck. There are also daily activities and entertainment to enjoy.

This tour includes the famous Norway in a Nutshell® tour from Oslo to Bergen. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

The first leg of the journey is from Oslo to Flåm. Then you'll be travelling from Flåm to Bergen. The duration of both days will be around 7 hours.

The connections will be announced and clearly explained in your travel documents. You will receive a ticket with all the information about transfer points and timings with your final travel documents.

You can book an optional luggage transfer for the journey. If you do this, you’ll want a backpack for your daily essentials and one-night stay. Your luggage will be waiting for you at your destination.

If you do not book a luggage transfer, you will have to carry your bags between the train, boat and bus. All connections will be within easy reach and there will be storage available for your luggage during each leg of the journey.

With this itinerary, you’ll travel from Oslo to Trondheim by train. You’ll board the Dovrebanen train from Oslo Central Station. This railway, dating back to 1921, passes over the Dovre mountain plateau and then takes a steep descent to the Trondheim lowlands.

With over 548 kilometres (340 miles) of railway, it takes around 6.5 hours to complete the journey to Trondheim.

On this tour, you will hop aboard a coastal cruise, provided by either Hurtigruten or Havila Voyages, along the Norwegian west coast. You’ll be staying in your own cabin with private facilities.

Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages operate along the same route on different days. Your personal travel consultant will book the cruise on your behalf in light of your tour’s start date and the rest of your itinerary.

If you are travelling on a Hurtigruten cruise: Hurtigruten ships offer a classic Norwegian experience, with cosy cabins furnished with either twin or double beds. Your room will be between 8-11 square metres (86-118 square feet) and will always include a port hole, but please note that a view from the window cannot be guaranteed.

Instead, Hurtigruten ships all offer comfortable viewing decks, dining areas and lounges. This way, you can spend your mornings and evenings relaxing with incredible views of the passing Norwegian coastline.

If you are travelling on a Havila Voyages cruise: Havila Voyages ships are the newer cruise liners on the block. Their modern cabins are furnished with either twin or double beds and are all around 15 square metres (161 feet). Your room will have a port hole and a small sofa so you can watch the views of ocean or coastline go past. Or, head up to the lounge, restaurant or viewing deck to see more of the passing fjords.

For the Norway portion of your Scandinavian adventure, your travel consultant will arrange the details of your cruise departure in light of your tour’s start date. They’ll then include all the information in your personal itinerary.

If you have a specific cruise in mind, check out our list of Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages sailing dates in 2024 and 2025.

Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages are shipping companies which transport travellers along the Norwegian coastline. Both offer incredible views of spectacular fjords and charming coastal villages as they journey towards Norway’s north or south.

That said, both companies have their own histories and distinct characters. Your cruise experience will vary depending on which company you’re travelling with. We’ve broken down the key differences below so you know what to expect on your seafaring adventure.

Hurtigruten dates back to 1893, and many of its ships were originally used to transport post. Due to the historic nature of these cruises, each one differs in size and your room’s port hole window may not have a view. Instead, you can expect a cosy cabin stay, with access to charming lounges and restaurant areas that have floor-to-ceiling windows.

Havila Voyages are a newer company, with a focus on eco-friendly and sustainable travel. Their rooms are slightly larger and have views of either the ocean or the coastline from their port holes. Just like Hurtigruten, they offer on-board facilities such as relaxing lounges, restaurants and viewing decks.

Whichever company you travel with, you’ll enjoy a private cabin with either a double or twin beds and ensuite facilities. Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee your cabin number for coastal voyages shorter than 5 nights.

When your ship is in port for longer than 30 minutes, you’ll have the option to disembark. Optional shore excursions will also be available on your journey, so make sure to pre-book any activities that interest you.

After your stay in Scandinavia, you’ll fly to Iceland to continue your Nordic adventure. Flights from Norway usually take 2.5-3 hours.

Each traveller in your party will be able to bring 1 checked bag, with a weight limit of 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Your carry-on bag weight limit will be 10 kilograms (17 pounds).

The flight schedule varies, and your travel consultant will book the best option for your travel dates.

Please note that transfers from your hotel to the airport in Norway are not included. You’ll have to make your own way by public transport or taxi.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Keflavík?

After picking up your luggage, you will be greeted by a driver holding a sign with your name in the arrivals hall. The driver will hand over your welcome package with hard copies of your travel documents. You’ll then be driven to your hotel in Reykjavík.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2 PM and 4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel so you can start exploring before check-in. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your arrival if you’d like an early check-in.

During the booking process, you can select whether you want Comfort Plus or Superior accommodation. Comfort Plus usually consists of standard rooms in good quality and comfortable 3-star hotels. Superior is standard rooms in 4-star hotels combined with superior rooms in premium 3-star hotels.

You will also be able to choose between single, double or triple rooms. Please note that in the Nordic countries room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra single bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you have anything specific in mind, please contact us to discuss customising your accommodation options.

Please wait to book flights to Scandinavia until we can confirm your desired travel dates for this tour. This is due to varying availabilities on services included in this package.

After making a booking with Nordic Visitor, it might take a few weeks to confirm your travel arrangements. We recommend booking your flights once your personal travel consultant gets in touch to confirm your itinerary.

Scandinavia is a beautiful destination all year long. But it’s good to be aware of a few things before picking the best time to visit for you.

During the summer months, June to August , you’ll have the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours of the year. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and taking full advantage of your days for sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around, then you could book a summer itinerary in May or September . These shoulder season months generally have more tour and attraction availability.

Independent tours of Scandinavia are also available during the rest of the year. But please be advised that if you are travelling in late March, April, late September or October, the weather is much milder, especially in Sweden and Norway. That said, there will still be more sunlight at this time of year than in winter.

Choose to travel in winter, November to February , and you’ll benefit from an itinerary of quieter towns and attractions. You can also expect fewer daylight hours, and the addition of snow-dusted mountains as a backdrop. It’s good to remember that in Scandinavia, northern lights can only really be seen from Northern Norway, Iceland, and Lapland.

Christmastime is another magical time of year to visit Scandinavia, with Christmas markets galore. But please note that there are limited opening hours during the holiday season.

The capitals of Scandinavia are located quite far north in Europe so you can expect long daylight hours in summer.

In Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden, you can expect between 16 and 19 hours of daylight depending on how close you are to the solstice. Copenhagen in Denmark is slightly more south, so you’ll enjoy 14-17 daylight hours.

In Norway, Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger are relatively south, so you’ll experience 15–20 hours of daylight. If you visit the north, including locations such as Tromsø and Kirkenes, you can expect 20–24 hours of daylight.

The region’s long summer days give you plenty of time to explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out more about time zones and daylight in this guide to  time and daylight in Scandinavia .

During the summer months, you can expect fairly stable weather across Scandinavia.

The months of June, July and August boast the warmest weather of the year. In Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo you can expect average temperatures between 17–20°C (61–68°F). This gets cooler in Bergen and then up the north coast of Norway. For example, Tromsø has average summer temperatures around 10°C (41–50°F).

In May and September, you can also expect milder conditions. Pack for temperatures closer to 11–14°C (52–57°F).

All that said, it’s good to know that weather conditions are often changeable in Northern Europe, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read the page  Scandinavian weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Summer has most stable weather of the year across Scandinavia, especially in the south of the region. That said, you should still be ready to experience all seasons in one day. Especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack for a combination of weather conditions.

Bring lighter clothes for the warmer, sunny days. And don’t forget extra layers for chilly nights in the mountains or for taking in the view from cruise ship decks.

Here is an essential summer packing list for your trip to Scandinavia:

  • Shorts and trousers
  • T-shirts and long sleeve tops
  • At least one warm jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen
  • Eye mask to sleep despite the long daylight hours
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • A backpack for easy access to daily essentials
  • and don’t forget your camera!

An umbrella can also come in handy. If you are a wildlife watcher, you may wish to bring binoculars.

For more information, check out this  Scandinavian packing list .

In most major Scandinavian cities and towns you will be able to find coin-operated launderettes, with self-service facilities, and dry cleaners. Most hotels on your trip will also offer a laundry or dry cleaning service for an additional cost.

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your accommodation is always included. For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

In Sweden, we recommend budgeting between 150-300 SEK for lunch per person, each day. Dinner at casual restaurants might cost between 250-500 SEK. Meanwhile at upscale restaurants, you might expect to spend at least 800 SEK per person.

In Denmark, these numbers will be closer to 100-200 DKK for lunch, 200-400 DKK for casual dinners and upwards of 600 DKK for upscale dining.

For Norway, you’ll want to budget 150–350 NOK per person per lunch. Dinners will be between 350-600 NOK and upscale restaurants might charge upwards of 1,000 NOK per person.

During your time in Iceland, you can expect to spend between 2,000–3,000 ISK at lunch. Casual dinners might cost between 3,000–6,000 ISK and 7,000 ISK or more for upscale dining.

These general budgeting tips do not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

Good and accurate organising

We found that the organising was good and accurate. For us parts of the overall tour was very rushed. For instance we would have preferred more time in Bergen and Oslo. The UNESCO Geirangerfjord tour was too much in one day and to then depart very late that night on the Hurtigruten to Bergen. We would have preferred to go direct to Bergen from Oslo. Geiranger was so busy because of two cruise ships.

Best of scandinavia - norway cruise & iceland, july 2023, i'd be happy to use nordic visitor again.

I didn't need to use the 24/7 helpline, however I did appreciate the timely responses from Liza on occasions when I had concerns. Overall I would be happy to use Nordic Visitor again.

Susan, United Kingdom

Best of scandinavia - norway cruise & iceland, june 2023, the tour was an adventure.

The tour was an adventure. Learning to navigate ourselves in each city was challenging but part of learning about the different cities! All accommodations were fine, most were quite excellent. The day tours were a great idea.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORDIC CRUISES

Just in case you want to learn more about cruise packages or Nordic Visitor destinations, we’ve collected the most requested queries and answered them here. If you want details on our company and booking processes, then check out our general FAQs or booking information page .

1. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE POPULAR?

Northern Europe is a popular holiday destination for so many reasons! It is a region brimming with gorgeous scenery and vibrant cultures, with the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of tours and activities.

From the fjords of Norway to the ice fields of Greenland, and from the world-class museums of Scandinavia to the Celtic heritage of Scotland, there is simply so much to uncover in Northern Europe. Best of all, you can visit the region year-round, with each season offering its own appeal.

Northern Europe is so diverse yet it is very easy to travel around, so you can see more than one country in the same trip. Flight times between destinations are short, although you can also journey by road, rail or cruise for scenic views along the way.

What’s more, the Nordic countries – that’s Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – regularly rank in the top 10 safest places in the world to visit. This is partly because they generally have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety, among other reasons.

Another plus is that most people in the Nordics speak English, which means you can easily interact with the locals if you are an English speaker yourself. In Scotland and Ireland, English is the main language.

2. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE GREAT TO VISIT ON A CRUISE?

You can easily travel around Northern Europe by cruise as there are fast, reliable and efficient links within the region. For example, Scandinavian cruise tours are very popular as they offer you the chance to visit a number of destinations across the Baltic and North Seas.

Cruising in Norway is a great option as you can visit various fjords and explore the country’s coastal landscapes. It’s also a fantastic way to discover the Arctic region, travelling aboard the reputable Hurtigruten cruise vessel.

In Greenland, cruising is the best way to reach remote corners of the country as they cannot be accessed by road. For a real adventure, spend a few days aboard a cruise to marvel at the Ilulissat Icefjord, whale watch in Sisimiut, and see mountains towering above the sea at Maniitsoq.

3. WHAT ARE THE TOP SIGHTS IN NORTHERN EUROPE?

Some of the top sights in Northern Europe include glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland, and fjords, mountains and valleys in Norway. Sweden flaunts lushly forested islands and countryside, while Scotland and Ireland are blessed with dramatic national parks and coastlines.

Find out the best places to visit in Northern Europe with our insider guides:

  • The best places to visit in Scandinavia
  • The best things to see and do in Norway
  • The best places to visit in Iceland
  • The best places to visit in Scotland
  • The best places to visit in Ireland

4. WHAT IS THE BEST NORDIC CRUISE?

There are so many Nordic cruises to choose from, so finding the best one depends on what you want to do and how much time you have.

On Scandinavian cruise tours , you can visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same trip. You could spend a week visiting the three Scandinavian countries, or stay for longer to explore the region at leisure and even incorporate other destinations into your tour.

A Baltic cruise is a great option if you want to experience a mix of Northern European cities and cultures.

Take your pick from various Baltic Sea cruise ports to stop off at. You might like to begin in Helsinki, Finland. You can then hop over to Tallinn, Estonia before sailing to Stockholm, Sweden. You may also wish to consider St Petersburg, Russia, as a port of call.

Alternatively, you could focus on exploring Norway by cruise . The west coast is 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) long, so there is plenty to discover! A Havila or Hurtigruten cruise will take you to glittering fjords and picturesque shorelines, ranging from 2 to 7 days at sea with shore excursions along the way.

How about an adventure to the far north? If you love immersing yourself in wild, remote landscapes, then opt for a Greenland cruise . Greenland is one of the last unexplored frontiers in the world, with its icy tundras, vast glaciers and Arctic wildlife.

Your voyage could whisk you to the hard-to-reach corners of Greenland. Cruise along glacier lagoons to see icebergs calving into the water, spot whales in the sea, and admire mountainous scenery from the water.

5. WHAT IS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR?

On a self-guided tour, you travel independently without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone, though, as your dedicated Nordic Visitor travel consultant has arranged everything before your arrival. They provide you with a personalised itinerary complete with tickets, bookings and recommendations.

We have a 24/7 emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

6. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO CRUISE NORWAY’S FJORDS?

Each travel season offers different reasons to visit the Norwegian fjords, so there is no “bad time” to go! However we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway at different times of the year, so that you can decide when is best for your trip.

Visit Norway’s fjords in the spring and summer (May to August) for long daylight hours and warmer weather. This is the ideal time to see the fjords surrounded with greenery and to join bird watching or kayaking excursions. You could also experience the midnight sun at the height of summer.

Alternatively, chasing the northern lights in Norway might be on your wish list. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

In which case, we recommend visiting in the autumn and winter, between September and March. You’ll need the right conditions to catch sight of them, such as solar activity, dark skies, and low light pollution. Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Norway on our blog.

Whether you see the northern lights or not, cruising the Norwegian fjords in winter is ideal if you want to avoid the crowds. The shoulder season (autumn and early spring) is also a good time to go as top attractions are quieter, with fewer visitors compared to the summer.

Whichever time of year you prefer to travel, we have reliable departure dates and there are cruise tours available year-round. You can find out more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

7. DO I NEED A VISA FOR A BALTIC CRUISE?

Whether you need a visa or not will depend on where you are travelling from. For example, you do not need a visa for a Baltic cruise if you are a citizen of the United Kingdom or USA. For all other nationalities, we recommend getting in touch with your local consulate to check.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can visit St Petersburg without a visa for up to 72 hours if you book a package cruise tour. Usually British and American citizens require a visa for Russia, but booking a Baltic cruise is one of the few exceptions.

8. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

In most cases, yes, you can view and select Nordic Visitor arrival dates online. You can always add extra days to your itinerary before or after the cruise.

9. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, you can extend all Nordic Visitor packages with extra days. Every tour can be customised by adding days to the beginning or end of your trip. You can also add extra days within your itinerary if you are travelling on a self-drive or private tour .

For cruises there are fixed departure dates as the vessel must adhere to an itinerary. But of course you can add days before or after your cruise experience. The same applies to small group tours .

10. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

We recommend you look over flights for timings and prices, but hold off purchasing until your package has been secured. Once your dedicated travel consultant has introduced themselves and sent over the confirmation email, you will have all of the information you need to pick and purchase flights.

11. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

You should always bring sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Northern Europe. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Warm socks (especially for winter travel)
  • Sunscreen (for summer trips)

An umbrella will also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to get a closer look at the fjords and local wildlife.

For a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for your trip, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland and Ireland .

Whether you want to book a cruise or ask about updating a package with extra days and nights, get in touch with our travel consultants.
