Downtown Smugglers' Tour: Salem Smugglers' Tour is one of the best things to do in Salem and also one of the city's best Salem attractions. All of the tours in Salem talk about the tunnels, but we are the original tour based on the book Salem Secret Underground: The History of the Tunnels in the City. Plus our tour guide is the author of the book. Our above ground Salem walking tour of the downtown is a ghost tour that highlights the history of the tunnels and the smugglers who built them. Historic Salem Commons Smugglers' Tour: Our tour of the historic Commons (New England phrase for a central town park used historically in common with towns people) goes over its history, the tunnels around it, and its ghost stories. In 1801 the Commons was transformed from the town swamp that watered the animals to the public park that we know it as today. The five ponds and the river leading to the sea were filled in by leveling the hills on the property. At least that was what most people thought. Truth be told, most of the dirt from digging the tunnels around the Commons filled them in. Who did it? The descendants of the first National Guard Unit in the country. Why? Because, Thomas Jefferson imposed new duties on imports and commanded local militias to help collect them. So a defunct militia was called into duty that would be in the pocket of the wealthy before a legit one could be formed. Take this tour and find out who paid them to dig the tunnels around the Commons. It will surprise you! Also you will see homes that were frequented by Longfellow, Lowell, and President Monroe which were connected by tunnels. You will hear the tale of America's first elephant, the Stoned Elephant. See two tunnel entrances we can look inside and hear a few ghost stories along the way. Take this tour at night and stroll under Victorian lamps under trees planted by Olmsted. May be you might even see the phantom band on the gazebo...

We where late because of traffic, Chris was great with directions. Kids did well on tour, even my youngest, lot. Of history, only thing we where dispointed about was, no actual tunnels, they where all filled in over time.... I. Enjoyed it for the price, so did the kids....

Not worth $20 at all. The 'tunnels' are just one foot pathways under manhole covers. Not impressed at all. The tour guide however was very nice and knowledgeable

Sorry, you paid $2 over ticket price of $18. I am not sure what you meant as "just one foot pathways under manhole covers." On the Salem Smugglers' Tour we never promote anywhere that we bring you into the tunnels. The tunnels are a part of the history of the narrative of the tour, but it is mostly about how Salem has shaped our inventions, Constitution, political parties, the War of 1812, the first secessionist movement, the Second Witchcraft Hysteria, JP Morgan bank, the national banks of America, and how America's first millionaires made their money. Strange how Salem is more than witches.... It would be cool if we can open the tunnels and walk around! Still waiting for a house to open up the access...

Terrible. Tour guide is a terrible story teller ... all over the place... terribly hard to follow. In 2 hours, you walk about 1 block and only see a hole in the ground. No tunnels. It was sooooo boring (and I love history tours). We went on the Bewitched Tour earlier in the day which was fantastic. I was so excited for the Salem Smugglers Tour... what a disappointment.

This tour takes advantage of people not familiar with Salem beyond the history of the witch trials. Being born and raised in Salem, I have issues with some of the stories told on this tour. I had friends visiting from out of town and they really wanted to check this out. Listening to the guide, he mixes fact and fiction, making up things to appeal to the tourists. For instance, he claims that the game Clue was inspired by a local murder. I had family that worked at Parker Brothers and I can tell you that the game is based on a British game, nothing to do with Salem. The stories he tells sound more like the musings of a conspiracy fetishist. As it turns out, this tour is based around a book that he authored and offers for sale to the tour groups. We later went to a couple of the local bars and got into a conversation with people who said that the guide is a local joke who can only make money off people who don't know him. They warned me that all the walking tour guides are a bunch of hustlers. Not worth the money.

Yelp is a wonderful place for people to guide others on making useful choices before they spend their money. I believe Yelp and the consumers would appreciate people leaving their reviews to help others after they experienced the product or service. In this review is of a customer I never had the privilege of bringing on a tour. I also believe that all the tour guides in the city have not had that privilege as well. She would have the right to express her opinion that we are all hustlers if she did indeed visit all of the 30 tour groups and all of their guides (Including the ones that just show up in October.) If I am wrong and she has been on a tour with every tour guide in the city, I do believe she has a right to her opinion. As far as me being a local joke, you might be right if you had seen me dance... Still I am sorry this person does not like me. Maybe if I met her in person she might change her mind. As far as the game Clue. It was released in England as Cluedo and issued in America by Parker Brothers the same year as Clue. The most famous American Murder in the 19th century was of Captain Joseph White from Salem. The Parker Brothers' granduncle Chief Justice Isaac Parker was to hear the case, but he died the night before he was to be on the bench. Three days prior he said he never felt better. This is the first connection the Parker Brothers had to the case. Originally 2 blackmail letters accused the victim's nephew Stephen White. One was addressed to him and the other to Dr. Gideon Barstow. In the letter the assassin Stephen White hired mentions hitting Captain White on the head with a lead pipe and stabbing him with a Scottish Dirk. The lead pipe and the Dirk appear as game pieces. A third blackmail letter appeared accusing the Knapps and Crowninshields who would stand trial or die mysteriously beforehand. In court, they mention a wooden club and not the lead pipe. The only married woman and the only name that is the same in England and America is Mrs. White. The murder in Salem was of Captain Joseph White whose wife died young. The house the murder happened in has a tunnel leaving it. The game has a secret passage. Parker Brothers lived in the neighborhood of the murder and had their first toystore (site of Hawthorne Hotel) two addresses away from the house the crime happened in. The rope in the game represents Mary Beckford's and Joseph Knapp's attempted hangings. They were the wife and father of Joseph Knapp Jr. who suffered double jeopardy and was hanged as an accessory to the murder after they never proved the suspect Richard Crowninshield Jr., who was found hanging in his cell from a low window, was even in Salem or committed the murder. The rope is for all those who hanged that was innocent. Is this 100% the reason that the Parker Brothers bought the American rights to the game? The Parker Brothers have not left much-written record. In life sometimes you just have to make assumptions; if you find a bluebird feather on the leaves, you can assume a bluejay might have flown by and dropped it and that the leaves came from the tree nearest them, but you have no proof. If your son has chocolate on his finger and around his mouth and there is a section of a cake disturbed, you did not see him put his finger into it... It was an interesting murder that even inspired Edgar Allen Poe to write the Tell-Tale Heart. Here is a link for more info on the case: ( https://books.google.com/books?id=KHQP-59OZRMC). As far as my books, I usually forget to mention them at the end of the tour, which I need to get better at. Also if the reviewer has read the books, she is welcomed to review them on Goodreads or Amazon.com. It might not be something to be reviewed on Yelp? Or at least maybe a different review about the books and not the tour. The books have been useful to the writing of "Wicked Charms" by Phoef Sutton and Janet Evanovich, The Librarians TV Show, and Cate Perry's Witch City Mysteries, and Robert Irvine's show Kitchen Expeditions we filmed in the tunnels of Salem. I wish the reviewer well and I will be glad to give her a tour one day if she so wishes.
