She’s Finally Here!

After an 18-month wait, we finally picked up our brand-new travel trailer: a Safari Condo Alto F2414. And she’s beautiful!

In the spring of 2021, after much research, we ordered an Alto because of its light weight (2,947 dry weight) and Safari Condo’s reputation for quality.  You can view all the specs on Safari Condo’s site .

Safari what?

If you haven’t yet heard of Safari Condo, you’re not alone. They’re a small manufacturer based in Quebec, Canada. They’re becoming more popular in the U.S., but you won’t see many on the road or in campgrounds. In our travels, we’ve only seen two.

Unless you can find one used, buying a new Alto is an exercise in patience. Before the pandemic, the average lead time from ordering to completion was 18 months. Because of supply-chain challenges during the pandemic, some customers experienced delays.

We were lucky. Our Alto was ready to right on time.

For U.S. customers, there are other challenges when you buy an Alto directly from Safari Condo – the distance, the exchange rate, crossing the border, etc. I’ll go into more detail about the buying process in another post.

We named her “Mosey,” because we like to take our time traveling from place to place.

Right now, Mosey is in our driveway as we get her ready for her maiden voyage, a month-long trip to Florida in February. In a future post, I’ll share how we set up the camper, and all of our modifications and enhancements.

The walls and roof are a sandwich-structured composite of a honeycomb core, laminated with an aluminium skin on one side and  Alufiber  on the other.  Alufiber  combines the lightweight properties of aluminium with the resistance of fibreglass. The Alto is built exclusively from materials that are water resistant, such as aluminium,  Alufiber , plastic, Formica and glass.

On the road: With its  Flexiride  independent suspension system and low centre of gravity, the Alto is very stable. Aircraft-inspired The Alto combines lightweight, aerodynamics and durability. Your car will love taking off with it. Underneath the Alto : Its independent Flexiride suspension and very low centre of gravity provide great stability to the Alto. Its floor and frame are made of aluminium. For maximum aerodynamics, the weld-free frame supports streamlined tanks. Powerful electric brakes come as standard equipment. A Green Travel Trailer : Faced with the steady increase in the price of gasoline and the social responsibility we all share to save non-renewable fossil energy, Safari Condo wanted to design ultra-light travel trailers with the lowest possible drag coefficient. Travel trailers meeting these two criteria could then be readily towed by smaller vehicles. Even more environmentally conscious, Safari Condo also wanted its materials selection to be not only lightweight but for the most part recyclable. Materials : Roof and walls are made of a sandwich-type material with a plastic honeycomb core laminated with aluminium on one side and Alufiber or aluminium on the other. Alufiber combines the lightweight of aluminium with the durability of fiberglass. To each their own space The F2414 is the most spacious of all the Altos. It was designed for people who want to travel without compromise. So that everyone has space, the water closet (WC) with sink and shower cabinet become two separate rooms. The dinette for four at the front and the chat area at the back make a functional interior where everyone is free to go about their day without ever preventing the activities of anyone else. The large counter, the outdoor table and the generous storage will make foodies, as well as all who travel with family or with a lot of equipment, very happy! Once evening arrives, a king and a queen bed pull out to allow everyone to sleep comfortably and wake up ready for the next adventure. Lighter than any other Its basic weight of 2 947 lbs puts the F2414 in a class of its own. No other 24-foot trailer in the industry offers as much space at such a light weight. The classic rounded shape of the Alto maintains exceptional aerodynamic performance. Therefore, the F24 series can be towed by a wide range of medium-sized SUVS. Ordered a Safari Alto F2414

I've been messing around shopping wanting to downsize from our 30' trailer + 2500HD combo. After looking at WAY too many possibilities, I've settled on the Alto. The big one! The GVWR on it is 4500 lbs, but highly unlikely I ever travel with the black/grey tanks full, or even half full. Delivery won't be until November 2022, but I'm excited to get something I can hit up to my Ascent (yes, touring) and drive out. I can't wait to have the argument with them over "get that weight distribution hitch away from my face." Just had that argument with husband when I ordered it. He doesn't believe me. I know I'm pushing it a little...but, heck, let's do it. Safari Alto F2414 I thought I should add info - the tongue weight isn't listed in the Alto information anywhere I can find online. The dealer tells me it is 305 - 425lbs depending on options (which include things like a bike rack, etc which is a no from me). I'll probably be somewhere in the midrange because I'll go with lighter batteries, so at 4500lb GVWR and 400ish pounds of tongue weight, I feel like this should be right in there. 24' is a little long based on absolutely nothing by my gut, which is probably wrong, but the 21' in everything seems to be a wet bath and I'd prefer the separate shower/bathroom. So we'll see.  

Our trailer is in the 4300 lb range ready to camp. I always try to keep the hitch weight at 500 lbs. It helps keep the trailer stable at highway speeds. Also, looking at the brochure that is a really nice setup I love the bed stacked over the other bed. And the tank capacity is spectacular. That should pair well with the ascent.  

Congrats! We contacted Alto about a week or so ago, they were estimating June '23 delivery! Maybe you get a hard number once you send them the cash. It's a shame we've never seen one in person, photos can be so deceiving. Did you get a chance to see one?

Thanks! Will do. It's really kind of like a 21' model, because the 21' doesn't include the yoke, etc. This is 24' from ball to bumper. I'm trying to figure out how I can take it for a test tow - drag it up a hill or something. I know they have rentals in Durango, Colorado but that's FAR from Seattle to drive out and back just to tow something around for a day.  

How exciting! We just got back from Durango and rented an R1723 for 5 days. We drove from Cleveland to test out RVing with friends who live in Colorado.The Alto is on our short list, but looking at the F2114. I do wish the F2114 came with dual axels. The closest dealer is 4 hrs away in London Ont. From what I have read so far, weight distribution should not be used on the Ascent. The Alto’s are very light, and I’m a bit concerned driving in higher wind conditions.  

OMG, they're beautiful, and within the towing capacity of the Ascent!!!  

LMAO, yep! Wouldn't work for just me, much less me and guests. It's got four at the sink, and I think, if it's like the lower end models, has ones near the beds/couches, and possibly in some of the task lighting. The pull down task lighting is really neat, btw.
