Dave Matthews Band Finish The Gorge Amphitheatre Run with “#34” Bust Out

Dave Matthews Band Finish The Gorge Amphitheatre Run with “#34” Bust Out

Last night, Dave Matthews Band returned to the stage at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Gorge, Wash., for the final stand of their annual run at the breathtaking venue along the mighty Columbia River. As is tradition, the ensemble descended to the fabled location ahead of the Sept. 5, Labor Day holiday. Friday night’s display brought forth bust-outs, and on Saturday, the band welcomed their openers, Eric Krasno and Celisse, on stage to independently assist on a selection of tunes. Then, the group continued last night with their third and final stand on the historic stage, where they delivered a bust out of “#34” during the night’s encore.

Dave Matthews Band’s Sept. 4 concert began with “Proudest Monkey” off 1996’s Crash , before turning back the clock to 1993 with fan favorite, “Satellite.” Then, the ensemble moved into “Pantala Naga Pampa,” which ran into “Rapunzel.” The single-set performance continued with “Do You Remember” before “You Might Die Trying” and “Walk Around the Moon.” Midway through the set, the band covered The Isley Brothers’ seminal track “It’s Your Thing,” which brought forth an added level of fun and funk.

The troupe followed with “Lie in Our Graves” and “Again and Again” before they landed on “Funny the Way It Is.” Next, Dave Matthews Band slowed things down with “Lover Lay Down,” which saw exquisite instrumentation and a perfected saxophone solo by Jeff Coffin. Next, they turned the heat up on jammed-out takes on “Jimi Thing” and “Cornbread.” The latter saw assistance by Joe Lawlor, who joined the band on stage for the tune. Then, “Steady as We Go” arrived before they ran through “Typical Situation” and “Drive In, Drive Out.”

As the 19-song main set came to a close, the group landed on “Dancing Nancies” off their 1994 LP, Under the Table and Dreaming , before stepping back into 1993’s Remember Two Things , with the crowd pleaser, “Ants Marching.” For their encore, the band began with a bust out of “#34,” which was last performed on Sept. 7, 2018, at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena in Stateline, Nev. Next, they choose to play “So Right,” before capping the unforgettable Pacific Northwest weekend with “What Are You.”

After this weekend’s events in Gorge, Wash., Dave Matthews Band will take a brief break from the road before reconvening this Friday, Sept. 9 at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village, Colo. There, the band will perform a two-night stand before heading to the Southwest region of the United States for a Sept. 14 gig at AK-Chin Pavilion. Tickets to the band’s forthcoming shows are on sale now and can be purchased here .

An ode to the Dave Matthews Band experience at the Gorge

By Melissa Huggins

An ode to the Dave Matthews Band experience at the Gorge

Let them come for me with pitchforks, the righteous indignant who haven't heard a Dave Matthews Band song since a three-minute radio edit in 1994, these smug experts who've never seen the band live. Welcome, those who decided that popular always equals bad, unlike, say, Prince, Beyonce or the Grateful Dead, those niche, underground artists. Cheers to those who once knew an insufferable frat guy who wore a Dave Matthews Band t-shirt and decided if that guy was a fan, it Must Be Bad™. (I assume those people also gave up beer, ice cream and outdoor sports, not wanting to be associated with things frat guys might love.) Hat tip to those for whom hating this band constitutes an identity on Twitter. Public Service Announcement: It's 2021 and no one is forcing you to listen to music you don't enjoy. Let people love what they love! Repeat: Good for you, not for me!

You're getting distracted by the haters, a friend says. What do you love ?

I love the genre-defying music, a blend of rock, jazz, folk, blues, pop, and more. I love the way drummer Carter Beauford's grin could power the state's electric grid. I love the camaraderie among fans, a collective feeling that there's nowhere on earth we'd rather be. I love the musicians who've shared their stage: The Roots, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Carlos Malta, the Lovely Ladies, and this year, Mavis Staples. I love Dave's ridiculous, joyful dancing, and the way every show is different, the surprises and thrills.

Pulling into the Gorge campground for Labor Day weekend is like the beginning of any good adventure: Buckle up for weirdness and delight. After setting up camp and meeting the "neighbors," the top priority is to walk around and people-watch. Artists and makers create all kinds of wares. Two years ago, the group next to us mounted a large inflatable Homer Simpson, wrapped in twinkly lights, as a beacon guiding them back to their camp after each night's show. Music, the magnet that drew us all together, can be heard from different directions all day, every day. Throughout the weekend, we chat with visitors from other states and countries, cook for a crowd, sing along to what's on the radio three campsites over, offer a beverage. We float on the river, eat hot dogs in the rain, talk politics, play catch, frisbee, bocce ball or card games. We converse, face to face. We connect.

H ow many times have I seen Dave Matthews Band live? The truth is, I don't know. There are fanatics who record every show, keep albums of every ticket stub; people who can predict which song is next based on the position of Dave's hands on his guitar or the percentage of times a song has been played so far on tour. That's never been my vibe. I first saw Dave Matthews Band live in 1997, and I loved it. Since then, I've gone as often as I could. In 2001, DMB created a three-night run at the Gorge, which became a Labor Day weekend tradition. I've been to Dave with high school friends, college friends, grad school friends, and friends of friends. I've gone alone, with colleagues, with a partner, with best friends. No matter what, every time, I feel a combination of happiness and gratitude. I feel convinced that maybe I can keep going. I'm able to laugh, play, take stock.

How many shows? All I know is that I've probably seen Dave Matthews Band live more times than the total number of concerts some people have ever attended. Every one brought me some measure of joy.

An ode to the Dave Matthews Band experience at the Gorge

Unfortunately, concert tickets for large touring acts can be expensive. Paying outrageous ticket fees and wildly overpriced concessions is a privilege, even if one is sleeping in a tent and making meals on a campstove all weekend. But each year that I've been able to afford tickets, split the camping pass, and buy enough gas to get there and back, those few days are precious, a time and place where I can truly relax. All year, I look forward to attending an outdoor concert perched on the edge of a canyon last carved 50,000 years ago by glacial flooding, and then sleeping on the ground in a grass field, surrounded by scablands, where sometimes the wind whips so hard that it bends your tent as far as it will go before breaking. I love every moment.

Some find it baffling, seeing one band so many times. I might, too, if I were you. It helps to understand how the band itself has changed over time: saxophonist Leroi Moore was killed in a tragic accident, while violinist Boyd Tinsley was kicked out of the band. Rashawn Ross (trumpet), Tim Reynolds (electric guitar), and Jeff Coffin (formerly of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) all joined the band circa 2008. Others have rotated in and out. The band has over 200 songs, plus live covers and other unrecorded material, which means every set at the Gorge is quite different. In one sense, the experience is akin to re-reading a favorite novel. Each time you revisit the work, elements of the story will strike a different emotional chord than in the past. This isn't because we're bad readers; it's because we are different , in ways big or small, every time we approach the work. We have changed; our minds and hearts have taken in new experiences. Hearing certain songs played over the years is similar. It's true that a published book is final; the words don't change between readings. But with music, specifically DMB's improvisational style, the songs themselves shift and change; the core remains but there is so much play, creating opportunities for every band member to riff, solo and shine. As with jazz, you can hear a song many times yet never hear the exact same song.

Multiple studies have found that as people experience live music, regardless of genre, the brain waves of crowd members synchronize, which increases feelings of social connectedness and altruism, in addition to activating individuals' emotions, intellect and physical movements. There's unquantifiable magic, too: The view, the acoustics, the crowd, the experience of dancing to DMB in sunshine, twilight and under the stars. If you've never seen Dave Matthews Band live, it's possible I sound like someone selling yoga or health supplements or religion. (I would never.) But what I can tell you is this: When you enter the venue, there's a moment at the top of the hill, past the food vendors and merch booths, when suddenly you have a 180-degree view of the Gorge. The deep blue of the river, the windmills across the canyon spinning slowly, the craggy basalt cliffs, all enveloped in a warm, late-summer glow. Music floats up from the stage, a prelude. Every time, I pause and soak it in. The immensity resets my perspective, reminds me what a blip humans are in the timeline of the universe. How lucky am I to be here, to experience this, to still be alive? I can't believe that we would take this for granted. It's part of the soundtrack of my life. I wouldn't have it any other way. ♦

Dave Matthews Band plays the Gorge Fri., Sept. 3 (with Dumpstaphunk and Allen Stone), Sat., Sept. 4 (with Ruston Kelly and Robert Randolph & the Family Band) and Sun., Sept. 5 (with Robert Randolph & the Family Band and Mavis Staples). Music starts at 5 pm each night and tickets are available.

Summer means three things.

Baseball, barbecue and Dave.

For the 32nd time — dating all the way back to 1991 — Dave Matthews Band will embark on a sprawling, nationwide summer tour.

From May through September, the legendary group is scheduled to headline at amphitheaters, pavilions, fairgrounds and arts centers all over North America.

That includes stops in Saratoga Springs on July 5-6 as well as Long Island’s Jones Beach Theater on July 9.

They’ll also hit Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on July 10 and Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on July 19-20 along the way.

At all shows, fans should expect a mixture of classic hits as well as choice cuts from the band’s 2023 album “Walk Around The Moon.”

And if you want to be there to sing along with Dave, you can scoop up your tickets for the summer tour as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, Feb. 16, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Dave Matthews Band set list

While DMB doesn’t adhere to a strict set list, we can let you know what they played at a recent show on their summer run.

Courtesy of  Set List FM , here’s what Dave and co. played — including a few surprising covers — on June 3 in Charleston, SC.

01.) “Bismarck” 02.) “Pantala Naga Pampa” 03.) “Rapunzel” 04.) “Sweet”

05.) “It Could Happen” 06.) “Crush” 07.) “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” (The Beatles cover) 08.) “After Everything” 09.) “When the World Ends” 10.) “Typical Situation” 11.) “Don’t Drink the Water” 12.) “Virginia in the Rain” 13.) “Grey Street” 14.) “All You Wanted Was Tomorrow” 15.) “Crash Into Me” 16.) “Break Free” 17.) “Lie in Our Graves” 18.) “So Right” 19.) “Jimi Thing” 20.) “Brick House” (Commodores cover)

21.) “The Ocean and the Butterfly” 22.) “Ants Marching”

Dave Matthews Band new music

In May, Dave Matthews Band dropped their tenth studio album “Walk Around The Moon.”

Over 12 tracks, DMB deliver their trademark bluesy, folksy, rock sound along with a few new flourishes.

Personally, we’re partial to the album’s title track, the deceptively simple “The Ocean and the Butterfly” and the rowdy, rollicking barnstorming good time of a song “After Everything.”

To hear the record for yourself,  click here .

Dave Matthews on Howard Stern

The wily frontman of the group recently appeared on  Howard Stern’s Sirius XM show .

Over the course of their wide-ranging conversation, they discussed Cat Stevens, the group’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snub and much more.

You can hear a rendition of Dave’s first song “I’ll Back You Up” below.

The Science Behind the Sound at the Gorge Amphitheatre

By Seth Sommerfeld June 6, 2024 Published in the Summer 2024 issue of Seattle Met

While the music of Washington artists resonates around the world, there may be no better place in the world to hear live music resonate than a remote outpost smack dab between Seattle and Spokane. Overlooking the Columbia River basin in George, Washington, the Gorge Amphitheatre continually gets recognition as one of the best outdoor music venues on the planet. Once a modest space, opened by Vince and Carol Bryan in 1986 to draw folks to their adjoining Champs de Brionne winery, it has since blossomed into a hot spot for superstar summer concerts and blowout weekend festivals. No venue comes close to matching the Gorge’s pristine natural beauty, and despite being a wide, open-air space, it’s consistently one of the best- sounding outdoor venues around . How is that even possible?

To get the lowdown on the venue’s sonic quirks, we talked to team members at Carlson Audio Systems, the Seattle audio equipment specialists who’ve worked the Gorge for shows ranging from Brandi Carlile and the Dave Matthews Band to the Watershed and Sasquatch! (#RIP) festivals.

Sound Mapping

dave matthews band tour gorge

Image: courtesy Carlson Audio Systems

An aerial view of the Gorge makes it clear that the lawn at the top of the hill actually isn’t squared to the stage—the southeast lawn is farther from the stage than the southwest. This puts everything at odd angles and distances that the sound crew must compensate for by adding more speakers.

The technology in line array speakers has greatly advanced in the digital era. The sound teams can use software to map out hot spots and quiet spots, allowing them to test out design systems from the comfort of a Seattle office and then having only to fine-tune smaller specifics once at the Gorge.

The Speed of Sound

Because the Gorge is so vast, adjustments must be made to keep things sounding right farther from the stage. Carlson employs delay systems. Microphones measure specific testing tones to calculate what delay in the speed of sound is needed to use on additional speakers to sync with the stage action. The result is seamless.

20-Foot Ramp

One of the trickiest elements for sound engineering teams at the Gorge is its unique setup for loading in gear. The load-in area behind the stage is at a much lower elevation than the stage itself, so everything must be painstakingly hauled up a 20-foot ramp.

The Changeover

Artists have their own sound engineers. Carlson’s Jesse Turner says it’s a mark of pride when tweaks are minimal: “you hand over the keys to a PA to an engineer, if he spends an hour working on getting it to sound the way he wants it to versus if he spends 15 minutes.”

Controlled Noise

Festival Setup

For anyone who’s attended a festival at the Gorge with multiple stages, it’s always a marvel how little sound bleed there seems to be with various acts playing at the same time. According to Carlson director of personnel Morgan Hodge, the sheer elevation change from the main stage to the top of the hill protects the sound from clashing together—it almost blows over the top, like how wind might travel.

It may seem overly obvious, but the remoteness of the Gorge has its sonic benefits. There’s basically no nearby noise pollution, and the openness of the space prevents any harsh slapback echo effects. Plus, sound engineers can crank up the volume because there’s nobody around to complain. “You can be pretty much as loud as you want to be,” says Turner.

Dave Matthews Band

Dave Matthews, lead singer and guitarist, is joined by bassist Stefan Lessard, drummer and backing vocalist Carter Beauford, lead guitarist Tim Reynolds, trumpet player Rashawn Ross, saxophone Jeff Coffin, and pianist Buddy Strong. Their 1994 album earned them their first Grammy nomination, and they won their first Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance with the song "So Much to Say" in 1996.

The 2023 tour will promote a brand-new Dave Matthews Band album, "Walk Around the Moon," which will be released on May 19th and will include the new track "Madman's Eyes," which was published on January 24th. It will be the group's tenth studio album and the follow-up to "Come Tomorrow," which was released in 2018. Walk Around the Moon was executive produced by longtime DMB associate John Alaga who stated the new album is "as much a commentary on the current times as it is an attempt to find common ground," according to a news release.
