Ryanair personal item size: 6 perfect Ryanair 40x20x25 bags

If you’re flying with Ryanair, everyone gets a 40x20x25cm item of luggage you can take on board at no extra fee.

It doesn’t matter what luggage you’ve paid for (if any!) Every passenger gets a Ryanair personal item size bag which is 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.

This bag needs to fit under the seat in front of you and shouldn’t really go in the overhead lockers (unless the plane is really quiet and there’s plenty of space!)

Whether you’re hoping to squeeze everything you need for your whole trip into your personal item size bag (which is definitely possible for short breaks!) or you’re just using it for the few bits and bobs you’ll want to access during your flight, here are some great 40x20x25 bags suitable for the Ryanair ‘free’ personal bag.

The Travel Hack Backpack

Cabin Max Travel Hack Travel Bags for Women | Ryanair Cabin Bags 40x20x25 | Laptop Backpack - Black

  • A fashionable and space-saving womens Travel Backpack cabin size which fits under the seat. It can hold laptops up to 13", serving as a convenient option for weekend trips too.
  • Features an easy access top pocket for purses, sun glasses, phones and travel documents.
  • Fits the Ryanair 40x20x25cm' free' underseat hand luggage rules. Flies for free on all other known airlines. Lightweight design weighs just 0.6kg.

The original and the best in my personal opinion! The Travel Hack Backpack is perfectly sized for the Ryanair 40x20x25 bag. It’s surprisingly roomy with handy pockets to organise your belongings and ensure you can find everything you need during stressful airport encounters.

It’s also a great bag to use once you reach your destination and need a ‘day bag’ for busy days out and about.

  • A spacious main compartment
  • Internal mesh pockets to separate and organise belongings
  • Two water bottle holders
  • A slim front pocket that is perfect for your passport and documents
  • A padded laptop pocket at the back (can double up as an anti theft pocket when you arrive)
  • A top pocket for smaller items like your phone and keys
  • Ideal for use as a day bag when you arrive

Cabin Max Hard Shell Vanity Case

  • The 20L Anode is ideal as extra hand luggage and is an ideal case for electronics, toiletries, make up, cosmetics and travel accessories. The hard shell exterior provides a tough protective shell.
  • Easy to carry top handle or use the adjustable padded shoulder strap. Rear trolley strap for easy attchement to larger rolling trolley luggage, fits perfectly with the Cabin Max Anode 40L
  • 40x20x25 cm Sized to fit the maximum Ryanair under the seat free hand luggage allowance.

This is a new one from Cabin Max and I absolutely love it.

This 40x20x25 vanity case is essentially a miniature hard-shell suitcase without wheels. It’s very cute and if you have paid for a larger carry on suitcase then it teams up nicely with the matching Anode Cabin Case.

Cabin Max Anode Carry On Hand Luggage Suitcase - Lightweight, Hard Shell, 4 Wheels, Combination Lock

  • Expandable bottle pocket with zip on the side. Made from durable, recycled RPET polyester. Rear trolley strap for use with larger trolley luggage on wheels. Gerecycled woven duurzaam rPET polyester....

If you prefer to roll your Ryanair personal sized item then I highly recommend the Cabin Max Narvik 20L. This tiny suitcase has lots of handy pockets so you can keep everything organised and easily access your necessities during the flight.

It might seem unnecessary to have wheels for such a small bag but I often find that even a small personal item can get heavy, especially when I’ve got my laptop and travel toiletries in there. There’s a lot of standing around at the airport and potentially lots of walking too, so if you want to save your back, this is the bag for you!

Best Carry-On Bag For Ryanair – Squeezing Into 2024!

Ryanair has taken minimalism to the sky. They shook up the industry with discount rates by separating the flight cost from the baggage fees. If you truly travel with pretty much nothing, you can find flights from Paris to Morocco cheaper than catching a train to Nantes.

Their cheap rates provide easy opportunities to get abroad and hook millions of budget travelers each year. Who can say no to a $10 direct flight, right? Unfortunately, if you want to travel with more than a change of clothes or two, your luggage will likely cost more than your ticket!

Low-cost airlines gotta sneak in those lost earnings somewhere, usually at the customer’s expense. I can respect that about Ryanair. Unlike other, more expensive airlines, they don’t pretend like they aren’t trying to squeeze money out of you every step of the way. And at least some of it is optional.

Baggage fees are a natural place to start. It seems fair enough until you start reading the fine print. Carry-on-size definitions on Ryanair are much smaller than you’d expect. Nobody in their right mind would call this small size reasonable, but that is clearly not the goal here. Every time you fly with them, the seats get smaller, and the cushion wears thin. We’re only a few months away from gate agents breaking out the measuring tape in the name of a 30-euro bag fee.

You always think you can get away with traveling with less, but only a few select travelers can spend more than a day or two living out of one free carry-on bag. Three days of peace and music is doable with one carry-on-sized container, but sometimes you’ve got to crumble and accept the extra charge. I mean, if you’re going to have a better time and you can afford it, it’s hard to argue against it.

Ryanair knows that and continues to crank up the argument.

Allow us to introduce you to the rebuttal. These backpacks are at the frontlines of discount travel, packing more storage options into less space and helping you march off the plane and straight out the door, 34 euros poorer and in Amman.

These carry-on bags are savvy travelers’ responses to rules that got too strict. While no backpack on the market can magically turn 40 liters of storage into a 30 x 20 package, these bags store more than their size and maximise the storage space they do have.

You’ve got to plan ahead to beat budget airline companies and keep your costs down. It starts with the right carry-on, so let’s dive into the qualifications before looking at the most qualified backpacks.

What is the Ryanair Carry-on Bag Size?

Small. Really, really small!

Especially if you hadn’t flown with them since 2018 when the carry-on size decreased. Each ticket now only comes with one personal bag that can fit underneath the seat in front of you. The listed dimensions of that bag are 40cmx20cmx25cm or roughly 20 litres of storage. Ouch!

The good news is that Ryanair does allow for a modicum of flexibility. Those numbers can represent any three angles of your bag, so a suitcase that is 40 cm long is just as acceptable as a backpack that is 40 cm tall, as long as the other two edges stay within the lines.

Compare the size of their hand baggage-only fares to Luftansa’s (55cm x 40cm x 23cm), and British Airways (40 x 30 x 15cm), and the good news turns bad. The key to Ryanair’s infamous policy is their strict interpretation of the definition of small.

A bag that you can get away with on other airlines will get stopped at the door at Ryanair. Travelers who don’t want clean underwear or folks heading to the beach might be able to stretch their free carry-on bag out to a week, but realistically, 20 liters plus the clothes you’re wearing on the plane will get you through a long weekend.

ryanair small travel bag

For an extra fee, you can travel with that carry-on bag plus a 10 kg piece (55cm x 40cm x 20cm.)  This service is called paying for “priority,” and it comes in a limited supply. Anything else, or anything bigger, will be heading underneath the cabin.

Don’t think you’re out of the woods just for upgrading. This 10 kg piece will usually top out at around 40 liters, which can be a tight squeeze. It’s the bare minimum most one-bag travelers would recommend, but there is still a chance staff might pull you up with a 40-liter backpack stuffed full.

That’s why the secret of great one-bag travel is multiple bags. Priority gives you a larger cabin bag in addition to your free personal item. That means with the right backpack combination you can walk on the plane with 55 litres of storage, which is more than enough to get you through a month in most tropical places.

Not every trip ends at the beach. Sometimes to get where you’re going, you’ll need a bit more gear, like for camping or winter trips for example. Each passenger can pay to check up to three 20 kg pieces of luggage too.

If you know you’ll have to check a backpack, doing it online will always be cheaper than being stopped at check-in. And they will check. Gate agent’s eyes light up with dollar signs at the sight of dirty hiking bags stuffed to the brim.

Every backpack on our list will qualify as a carry-on bag for Ryanair, some in the overhead compartment, and some as a free personal item. Be sure to check before you travel if you need to upgrade.

Ryanair opened up flights to a bunch of different destinations to draw in tourism. We have created this expert guide on the top 10 Ryanair destinations . It details who this location is ideal for, the best time to visit, and (most importantly) what you can actually get up to while there.

How Much is a Ryanair Carry-On Bag?

You’ll want to bite the bullet early on all luggage purchases, both to make sure there is still room in the priority class with access to overhead bins and also to avoid the higher fees that come with same-day luggage checking.

The cold hard truth is that if a gate agent decides your bag is too big, there’s not much you can do to plead your case. You might get away with it a time or two, but eventually, you’ll have to buy some extra luggage and it’ll cost you a fair bit more.

Nomatic Travel Pack

The Priority Pass is Ryanair’s solution. They make things sound fancy by emphasizing your two free cabin luggage options, but really it’s the one free bag plus one 10kg case. You’re paying for an extra backpack and an earlier boarding group.

A lot like mushrooms, priority is best purchased online! Even if you call a Ryanair call center instead of booking your bags online, the prices will be higher. Nothing compares to the fees they’ll place at airport ticket desks though!

A good rule of thumb for anything involving Ryanair is to take care of things before you get to the airport. Thankfully, they finally stopped charging us for not having our tickets printed out, but there are still plenty of extra fees the company looks to tack on while checking you in.

The fees are real, and they are enforced. Going by carry-on size restrictions, Ryanair is literally the worst.

The Best Bags For Ryanair Flights

There’s carry-on ready, and then there is Ryanair ready. The budget ticket seller makes no secret of their passionate enforcement of draconian bag requirements. Just like the black market adjusting to the police increasing cell phone monitoring, some companies have made it their mission to stay ahead of the rules.

The choices are split between free bags that may have to go in the overhead compartment and carry-ons guaranteed to fight under tight seats.

Just remember, the art to travelling carry-on only with Ryanair is not just the bag itself, but learning how to properly pack your bag for flying on the chicken bus of the skies!

We’ll show you a few backpacks that bring the power back to the passengers!

As well as being globally carry-on ready, it’s also got a phenomenal design, great organization, and it has HUGE amounts of space. Tortuga might be the company that best knows how to create space within their bags so you can pack the compartments to your heart’s content.

Note that there isa 40L version available but in order to spare you all the wrath of European airlines like Ryanair, we suggest using the smaller 30L version.

I loved taking this pack around Europe as it was accessible, comfy to carry and fit all my gear. One thing I noticed about this pack is how durable and strong the zippers feel.

Peak Design – Travel Pack 30L

Peak Design travel backpack review

  • Dimensions (CM): 53cm x 34cm x 18cm
  • Capacity (L): 27l extendable to 33l

The Peak Design Travel Pack 30L is designed with carry-on travelers in mind, with its well-thought-out design. Offering 30 liters of space, it is perfectly sized to comply with Ryanair’s carry-on restrictions, yet spacious enough to carry all you need for a short trip.

WANDRD – PRVKE Lite

WANDRD PRVKE Lite

  • Dimensions (CM): 40 X 28 X 14 cm
  • Capacity (L): 11-16
  • Price ($): 239

WANDRD’s flagship PRVKE model can work as a carry-on on most airlines, but to get onto Ryanair they had to think smaller. The Lite bag takes things down a size while still bringing cushioned, organized storage to a solid amount of gear. You’ll still have plenty of divider options and even a laptop compartment, all in a great under-seat size that’s kind on the shoulders too.

PRVKE’s dimensions are right at the edge of the baggage policy, getting under the legal limit without giving up a single Centimeter more. You might have to answer a few tough questions if the bag is stuffed full, but with enough patience, you can stuff this solid bag inside any steel cage. The roll top feature means you can throw your hoody or a few extra bits back in once you arrive at your destination.

If you’re looking for a similar but slightly larger setup, then check out the WANDRD PRVKE 31L instead.

Stubble & Co – The Roll Top

Stubble & Co Roll Top Mini

  • Dimensions (CM): 41 x 28 x 12
  • Capacity (L): 14
  • Price ($): 155

The Roll Top is a commuting specialist that works great whether your route is underground or in the air. The same sleek features that help this bag fight snugly over your shoulders in an amphibious march to work will also help the bag slide under the seat. The direct access laptop pocket means once your bag gets beneath the seat, you won’t have to zip it open until touchdown.

If you’re feeling like flirting with the limits even further, Stubble & Co, has a larger roll-top backpack with an extra 6 liters of storage, all while only adding on 3 centimetres of length, width, and height. Leave an extra t-shirt behind, and you can likely still sneak it onboard.

If it’s the hipster style you’re looking for and the Stubble & Co Roll Top doesn’t quite hit the mark, then check out our round-up of the best hipster backpacks on the market for some more ideas.

Osprey – Transporter Panel Loader

Osprey Transporter Panel Loader

  • Dimensions (CM): 47 x 33 x 23
  • Capacity (L): 25
  • Price ($): 165

The Transporter’s dimensions are a dangerous game. If you fully stuff the Panel Loader full, There’s a good chance this backpack can get flagged at the gate. Worst case scenario, it will still easily fit in the overhead compartment, and thanks to its lack of stiff joints, you might be able to squeeze it under a seat or two with a bit of elbow grease!

Osprey switched up their usual operating procedure, creating a super flexible shell that can collapse down to a small stature. While there is still plenty of comfort against your spine, Osprey skipped the Airscape back panel on this bag, greatly increasing shrinkability. An internal water bottle pocket finishes the job off, resulting in a sleek backpack that can fit in tight spaces.

If you’re looking for some different options when it comes to Osprey bags, maybe you’ve decided to check in some bigger luggage, then check out our guide to the best Osprey bags on the market .

Osprey – Quasar

Osprey Quasar 26L

  • Dimensions (CM): 48 x 30 x 27
  • Capacity (L): 26
  • Price ($): 120

The Quasar marks the start of our backpacks that flirt a bit with the overhead compartment.  Take advantage of the compacting side straps, and you can still easily pack this bag for a weekend trip, squish it under the seat with a 100% success rate.

The 26-liter bag has a few great exterior features that make the bag feel both bigger and smaller. A durable mesh cord allows you to strap on a sweater or oversized tools, and a top bungee connection helps the bag squeeze tightly together to slip into smaller spaces. When it’s time to ease your bag into the gate side metal box, remove your sweater and fit right in. I have personally taken this bag as my “under seat” bag on countless flights and never had any problems including with Ryanair. Check out my Osprey Quasar review .

Tropicfeel  – SHELL

Tropicfeel Shell Backpack

  • Dimensions (CM): 51 x 30 x 19
  • Capacity (L): 20-40
  • Price ($): 249

This backpack takes on many different forms. Fully loaded, it’s practically a mobile closet with a detachable hanger, toiletry kit, a tech pouch, and a camera cube. Unfortunately, at maximum size, you’ll also need priority. Start deconstructing things, and suddenly you’ve got a  great bag to beat Ryanair.

You can squeeze things down over 6 liters smaller to get through security and then unfurl a kangaroo pouch perfect for souvenirs. You can even add and remove hip straps to affect the bag’s overall size further. The adaptability of the bag means you can slim down for your flight and open it back up once you arrive.

No matter which setting you’ve employed, it’s got a tough waterproof exterior and organised interior that come together for a great backpack.

Not sure if the SHELL is right for you, why not have a look at the TropicFeel NEST instead, it’s still 16L and has similar expandable features.

Cabin Max – Memphis 30

Cabin max Memphis 30

  • Price ($): 54.30

This affordable and functional bag was custom designed for aviation and will slot perfectly under your seat on all Ryanair and Wizair flights. You can wear the Memphis 30 ear as a backpack, carry it by the top handles or even combine with your rolling luggage using the rear handle pass-through.

If offers 24L internal capacity with built in packing compression system, a nice padded laptop/tech compartment, 3D packing pockets, water bottle pocket and organiser compartment with key clip and then a discrete rear ‘secret’ pocket. Padded backpack straps with adjustable chest strap and sunglasses loop. Stubble & Co – Adventure Bag

The Stubble & Co adventure bag

  • Dimensions (CM): 55 x 38 x 24
  • Capacity (L): 42
  • Price ($): 300

It’s easy enough to leave home with a slim pack, but everyone’s bag fills up along the road.

Once you land, this bag really shows out. Stubble & Co’s new model comes with features from across the aisle. You won’t find many backpacks with a reflective, stormproof cover and a padded laptop compartment/secret pocket combo. The new streamlined shape sits like a jetpack on your back, ready for takeoff.

Mahi Leather – The Dixie Boho

Mahi Leather Dexie Boho

  • Dimensions (CM): 30 x 29 x 10
  • Capacity (L): 9
  • Price ($): 168.50

Dixie Bohoes bounce from Texas to Tennessee, strapped up in leather bags and bangles. Mahi leather is along for the ride with one thumb stuck out by your side. When some other materials break down, this full-grain Leather won’t even crack. This bag only bends and morphs with time.

Brass fittings and YKK tell the world this company is dedicated to taking care of the little things and letting the leather do the talking. The genuine suppleness of the leather takes on different shapes through use, further whistling dixie. High-quality materials and focused detail work are a great combination to provide genuine craftsmanship no matter where the value fare takes you.

The best thing about the bag though, it’s easily below the size limitations for Ryanair carry-on luggage, so you’ll never have to stress.

Like the look of this leather bag? Check out the best leather bags on the market for some more options.

Aer – Go Tote 2

AER Go Tote 2

  • Dimensions (CM): 38 x 28 x 13
  • Capacity (L): 17.5
  • Price ($): 89

The Go Tote is a sneaky way to get on board with a whole lot of storage. Gate agents aren’t used to providing an over-the-shoulder bag with the same scrutiny as backpacking backpacks. While it’s a few liters lighter than those more traditional models, it’s also guaranteed to qualify as a free option on any flight.

Those fools have no idea! Below the surface, this is no ordinary tote. Thanks to nifty organization options and a laptop compartment, this bag can keep your gear organized and fit in a whole load more than you might imagine. It has six separate pockets ready to outscore any Jansport. That proficiency takes this bag places… and does it without having to pay any extra baggage fees!

Looking for a tote-style bag but not too sure about the Aer? Have a look at our guide to the best messenger bags for a few more ideas.

AER – Go Sling 2

AER go sling 2

  • Dimensions (CM): 24 x 13 x 5
  • Capacity (L): 0.8
  • Price ($): 59

This bit of gear is the backpack equivalent of a swiss army knife. If you pack smart and dress loosely, you can get some storage for free with this close-fitting chest piece. The slim storage capacity is chock full of mesh, zippers, and dividers that split up your gear and keep your cords untangled. Most importantly, it does all that while fitting underneath your clothing.

If they’re going to treat us like cattle, we’re going to turn this game into Animal Farm. Sneaking an extra bag onboard exists on the outskirts of the rules, sort of like counting cards at a casino. If you get caught, you might get invited into the backroom and tossed around, but ultimately you’ll just pay a small fee.

Sling-style bags are a great option when it comes to carry-on travel as they’re small, fit most of your valuables and often go undetected. If you’re in the market for one but want a few more options then check out our roundup of the best sling bags for a few more ideas.

Final Thoughts on Finding The Best Ryanair Carry on Bag

You didn’t spend a month searching Skyscanner for the year’s cheapest getaways just to piss it all away on extra luggage fees. To really save money on your next trip, carry-on bags are the way forward. Spending a bit of extra money on the right bag now will save you money on each and every flight.

Right now, you can find 67 flights on Ryanair’s website that are cheaper than the price to check a 20 Kg bag. The right carry-on bag can cut your travel budget in half. That sounds great, but you’ll be surprised how challenging it is to cram things down to 15 Liters.

Osprey Farpoint 40L Backpack

If your bag is on the edge of glory, we’d prescribe paying for priority upfront and half a Xan after you get through security to ensure a smooth travel day. Even if you’ve already taken the pledge and splurged for a checked bag, you should still consciously choose your carry-on.

A good carry-on bag will ensure everything you need stays by your side and with airlines potentially scrapping liquid rules soon, it’s an even more convenient way to travel.

Budget airline or Eithad, there’s a real chance things get lost along the way. While your checked bag does the legwork, your carry-on bag should store a few days of gear, so you don’t have to spend the first afternoon of your vacation bikini shopping.

Ultimately, there is no carry-on bag that has truly hacked Ryanair. Every bag that you can fit underneath the seat had to make some serious sacrifices to make it happen. The bags on this list soften the blow while still maximizing storage to give you a fighter’s chance.

Most of the luggage listed above is still too large in at least one dimension to qualify as a RyanAir ‘personal item’.

I just spent a long time trying to find a backpack which definitely falls within the 40x25x20 limit. I found a few that were 42 or 43 high; these ought to be acceptable to all but the most zealous of RyanAir staff – e.g. the Deuter Race 8 backpack, Montane Trailblazer 8 and the Rab Tensor 10 – but these are all 8-10 litres, and still potentially going to be rejected.

I eventually came across the Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 13 (the other varieties of Kanken are just a bit too big one way or another, but this one is 35x25x16). So far this is the largest backpack I have found which is definitely within the RyanAir restrictions – combined with an Osprey Farpoint 40 as a 10KG carry-on, this gives me a pretty useful amount of storage for longer trips, and a nice daypack for when out and about. Probably enough for two-three days somewhere warm on its own.

Another trick for reducing luggage (if you’re not traveling in the winter) is to layer up your clothes when flying. They will only see the top layer going through the gate. As soon as you’re on the plane head to the washroom and remove the outer layers. Also always wear your heaviest and largest footwear on to the plane.

You should review luggage vests or jackets so people can eliminate luggage completely. Granted it’s for a small demographic but its important when you absolutely can’t check luggage for whatever reason. These things have massive pockets allowing people to bring an enormous amount of stuff on to the plane. Probably one could even convert a raincoat for this. As soon as you’re on the plane you can put it in an overhead bin. You could also bring a stuff sack for it to fit into. This is truly packing on another level.

Another area that people rarely consider is traveling with a bicycle and the box it has to be packed in. Sure you have to pay for the box but there is often a LOT of space in that box and they don’t seem to care what it weighs so unless you’re transporting heavy stuff it can be utilized for a lot of items. This along with the luggage vest would be interesting. You can get bike boxes for free in most cities as bike stores just throw them out. Ideally it would be made out of lightweight plastic but that’s just more thing someone can steal. Though it could be used to protect the bike if you’re taking the bus/train within the country. Local transportation can be rough.

What Counts as a ‘Small Bag’ on Ryanair?

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click one, we may earn a commission at no cost to you.

This article explores the difference between what is a ‘small bag’ according to Ryanair rules, and how big of a bag you can actually get on a plane without paying extra.

Key Takeaways

  • Ryanair is more lax about the ‘small bag’ dimensions compared to the pre-pandemic period
  • Larger bags are ok as long as they don’t trigger a number or “red flags”
  • Consider travel hacks to never pay extra for luggage
  • Be ready to bin items or pay the luggage fee in case of zealous staff
  • Monitor Ryanair practice as it might become more strict again

Ryanair Small Bag Policy

If you are a frugal traveler like us here at the Smart Travel Family, chances are you privately probaby travel with budget airlines like Ryanair and WizzAir. And – you, just like us, probably want to pay as little as possible for luggage on top of the airline ticket fee.

ryanair small travel bag

The problem with Ryanair and similar budget airlines in comparison to “regular” airlines, is that if you have more than one flight leg you have to pay the luggage fees for each of the legs. This usually multiplies the initially low fare that probably attracted your attention to Ryanair in the first place on such flight aggregators like Momondo (our favorite), SkyScanner, Google Flights and similar.

How Big of a Bag Can You Actually Get on Board on a Ryanair Plane?

Ryanair ‘small bag’ rules.

Ryanair allows you to carry a small personal bag (40x20x25cm or 16 x 8 x 10 inches), which must fit under the seat in front of you. If you’re interested in volume, this is equal to 20 liters or 2880 cubic inches. To be honest, this is quite a small backpack that doesn’t fit a lot of stuff.

ryanair small travel bag

If you are flying with anything larger than that, in theory, you have to pay for at least cabin luggage. However, in practice you might be able to take on board a much larger bag if you follow some simple rules and travel hacks.

ryanair small travel bag

‘Small bag’ rule application in practice

The way Ryanair applies rules in practice changes over time , as many frequent budget travelers will attest. Ryanair staff at the gates were really zealous before the Covid pandemic, but appear to be much more lenient in the post-pandemic era, probably to keep travelers loyal and a bit more satisfied.

Knowing the current Ryanair practice, will allow you to take a larger backpack on-board rather than pay the additional ‘cabin luggage’ fee.

Most likely you will be able to take on board ‘cabin baggage’ size bag without paying the respective fee, if your bag:

  • Has no wheels. As soon as there are wheels, you’ll have to pay.
  • Is slightly under cabin luggage size .
  • Is the sole visible bag . Conceal any additional smaller bags within the larger one or under your clothes.
  • Is carried gracefully . Avoid giving the impression that the bag has something very heavy in it.

If you want to be more certain that you are not stopped at the gate and made to pay for oversize “small bag”, here are a few other travel hacks to consider.

Travel hack #1 – pack tight for the gate check, expand in the plane

Remember that Ryanair checks luggage only at the gate.

This means that you have to appear to have one tightly packed bag at this point in your journey. There is nothing that really stops you to put your belongings in two bags once you are in the plane for easier access. Similarly, it’s surprising, how many items you can pack put in your pockets while passing the gate check.

We almost always take along a collapsible travel bag when flying Ryanair.

Travel hack #2 – all travelers are entitled to a small backpack, even children

ryanair small travel bag

If you are travelling with children, chances are you can pay for very few or even no cabin luggage or checkin bags. This is because every traveller – even children – is entitled to their own free backpack, irrespective of who is carrying the bacpack (usually one of the parents). Most kids’ private stuff doesn’t take as much volume as that of adults, hence you can pack lots of common family stuff in the kids’ backpacks.

Travel hack #3 – small backpack for your laptop

If you travel with a laptop or other sensitive electronics, these might not let you pack your bag very tightly and force you to pay for extra luggage. Unless you do something about it.

Our solution has been to get a small thin backpack (like in the image above) just for the laptop and/or tablet. You can wear it under your coat. This allows you to really pack your backpack to the brim, and still avoid the luggage fees. Sadly, this tip will not work in summer or countries with warmer climates.

Travel hack #4 – god-level packing hack

While we haven’t tried this ourselves, seasoned hardcore budget travellers get special vests with a gazillion pockets just to get past the gate. After that they just stove the vest under the seat or the overhead lockers and enjoy their flight.

They do not have to pay for the vest because it counts not as a bag, but an item of wardrobe.

We advise against buying any of the bags advertised on Amazon and elsewhere that promise 100% compliance with Ryanair and WizzAir rules. Particularly, if its in the sub 50 EUR range. There are two reasions for this.

Firstly, the bags are usually of really poor quality. For the one we bought, a strap was loose upon receiving it and fell off after a single instance of use. Fortunatelly, we could return it for a full refund.

Secondly, it really doesn’t make sense to stick with the 20 liter volume if the policy is not enforced, and you can easily smuggle at leaste a 30 liter bag onboard.

If you want to be really cautious, consider using any good quality sub-30-liter backpack that will not fall apart after a few weeks. Kristaps is a big fan of his Mammut Nirvana 30l bag, and has never had problems with any of the budget airlines. It has superb zippers and its back can be fully opened for easy packing.

ryanair small travel bag

What’s the worst that can happen?

Always be ready for a particularly zealous gate guardian.

While the tips above work in majority of cases, if you want to be a person that uses travel hacks, there are risks involved. If gate staff ask you to pay for luggage that appears to be oversize, you have to be ready to either pay the 60-70 EUR fee… or you can discard some of your items in the nearby bin.

This is why when we employ the travel hack described in this article, we pack the least valuable items where they can be easily accessed so that we can quickly evaluate if we want to throw them away (which has never happened in practice).

If you have a particularly large backpack and there’s a real risk of you being stopped because of it, probably don’t board last so you have time to evaluate which belongings to discard and not have to pay.

Have something to share?

If you notice a change in the practice and a tendency to once again apply the rules strictly, please drop a comment below.

Travel hack – How to pack Ryanair (aka tiny) hand luggage only

ryanair small travel bag

In the interests of a challenge I packed a Ryanair carry on bag for a three day break according to the new 45cm x 25cm x 20cm regulations.  And I am here to tell you – it can be done.

So yep, there is a little bit of compromising and a lot of smart thinking to be done but you know what?  I had everything I needed in that tiny bag.  So first up, let’s take a look at what went in…

  • 1 x wrap blouse – this works alone with jeans or shorts but equally well layered over a dress for a different look
  • 1 x midi dress – this could be worn day or night
  • 2 x swimwear – perhaps one is enough but I like to have variety for the tan line variation at least
  • 2 x tank/vest tops – to work with shorts or jeans
  • 1 x shorts – easy to pull on during the day
  • 1 x jeans – just in case it turns out cooler in the evenings than you hoped
  • 1 x maxi dress – ideally choose a dress that works by the pool but also in the evening
  • 1 x pair flat sandals – make sure these are neutral and, most importantly, comfy
  • 3 x undies – if you follow my Five Star Holidaying on a Budget tips you should have no need for pyjamas as all good hotels provide robes and slippers

And then to travel you want something super comfy but that can easily double as one of your looks during the trip.  I opted for…

  • 1 x jacket – I have been living in  this cropped denim number * all summer and it goes with  everything
  • 1 x scarf – I always ALWAYS wear a big, lightweight scarf because they have sooo many uses (keep you comfy and cosy on the flight, act as an extra layer in the evening, can be a cover up in the sun, even a towel on the beach – just take one)
  • 1 x jumpsuit – this loose tan number is an old time fav of mine but they have re-released it this season * again in a new fabric
  • 1 x sneakers OR wedges – chances are you have a fair idea before you travel which of these will be more useful to you but sadly both take up precious real estate in the packing dept. so just wear them
  • 1 x makeup bag
  • 1 x toiletries bag – this 100ml all day long suncream * was a new discovery for me
  • 1 x mini bag – filled with passport, purse, phone plus charger and neutral to match your palette for evenings
  • 1 x book – call me old fashioned but I like a real paperback for round the pool
  • 1 x pair of sunglasses
  • 1 x beach bag – a string or canvas option is your best bet here because they take up next to no space but hold everything
  • 1 x hairbrush
  • 1 x pair straighteners – if, like me, you must
  • 1 x plug adapter – although worth checking if your hotel offer these in the rooms

As far as jewellery goes I wear it all for travel; not only does this save any of it getting knotted or damaged, it saves on space.  The lady in the plane seat next to me commented how much she loved all my layered pieces…  she then went on to tell me that her daughter usually refers to her as Mr T  so I guess she also falls into the ‘more is more’ camp.

The key thing to bear in mind when selecting your options is versatility.  I like to opt for a neutral colour palette of black, white and tan but you might be just as happy in a rainbow of clashing colours – as long as you can wear each piece more than one way then you will not be stuck I assure you.

When it comes to packing you want to start with the bulky items like shoes, straighteners, the book and beach bag and then follow up with the clothes.  Now it is time to rock and ROLL.  Seriously, roll.  Roll like your life depends on it.  You will be  amazed at how much space this saves. And finally finish the top layer with all the things you might need during travel – the mini bag filled with the purse and phone, the sunglasses and the toiletries prepped for security because, trust me, nobody wants to be that guy whose clear bag full of liquids lurks somewhere in the depths of their precision packed case.

I almost feel like I should add a disclaimer here because, in truth, Carrie and I wound up booking a carry on case to share, largely due to her fear of me packing no pyjamas.  This allowed me to bring along the aforementioned and apparently crucial pyjamas, this entirely space hungry fringed raffia evening bag * (obsessed), plus an extra outfit which, you guessed it, did not get worn…

Ryanair’s luggage policy can be strict and confusing, so it’s important to know the exact size and weight requirements before flying.

Passengers are allowed a small bag for free, but it must fit under the seat in front and meet specific size and weight requirements.

For those needing more space, Ryanair offers a Priority and Two Cabin Bags option, which includes a small bag and a larger trolley bag with a weight limit of 10 kilograms. Hold luggage options are also available but with smaller size allowances than other airlines.

Ryanair 2023 Baggage Allowance

Hand Luggage

Passengers who purchase a Ryanair ticket receive a small bag for free, which must be able to fit under the seat in front of them.

However, it is crucial to ensure that the bag meets the size and weight requirements, as Ryanair is stricter than most other airlines.

Ryanair Cabin Baggage

The free bag provided is essentially a small rucksack or handbag, with specific size requirements of 40 cm in length, 20 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth.

It is important to note that the width allowance of 20 cm is smaller than most other airlines, which can catch passengers off guard. For those who need to bring more than just a small bag, Ryanair offers a “Priority and Two Cabin Bags” option.

This option allows passengers to bring a second larger bag that must meet specific size requirements of 55 cm in length, 40 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth, with a weight limit of 10 kg.

This can be stored in the overhead lockers.

  • Length: 40 cm = 15.75 inches (approx.)
  • Width: 20 cm = 7.87 inches (approx.)
  • Depth: 20 cm = 7.87 inches (approx.)

Passengers must be careful to ensure that their luggage meets these requirements to avoid additional fees.

The cost for the “Priority and Two Cabin Bags” option starts at £6 and can vary depending on the flight duration and demand.

Overall, it is essential to be aware of Ryanair’s strict luggage policies and to plan accordingly to avoid additional fees and complications during travel.

Ryanair 2023 Baggage Allowance

Priority and Two Cabin Bags

Passengers who require more luggage space can opt for Ryanair’s Priority and Two Cabin Bags option.

This option includes a small bag that fits under the seat in front and a larger trolley bag. The larger bag must meet specific size and weight requirements, including a maximum weight of 10 kilograms.

The larger bag must have a length of 55 centimeters, a width of 40 centimeters, and a depth of 20 centimeters. It should also include the wheels and handles in the measurements.

Book your next flight through expedia.com

Passengers who choose this option will also receive priority boarding.

  • Length: 55 cm = 21.65 inches (approx.)
  • Width: 40 cm = 15.75 inches (approx.)

The cost of this option starts at six pounds for short flights but can be higher for longer flights and depending on demand. Passengers should be mindful of the weight and size restrictions to avoid additional fees.

It is important to note that Ryanair’s size restrictions for the larger bag are smaller than other airlines. Passengers should also be aware of the weight restrictions and plan accordingly to avoid additional fees.

Overall, the Priority and Two Cabin Bags option is a suitable choice for passengers who require more luggage space and are willing to pay for the convenience.

The smaller rucksack must fit under the seat and the larger bag can be placed in the overhead luggage hold and does not need to be loaded into the plane’s undercarriage hold.

Hold Luggage

Ryanair’s hold luggage is divided into two options: 10 kilograms or 20 kilograms.

The 10-kilogram bag costs between £12.99 and £35.99, while the 20-kilogram bag costs between £20.99 and £59.99, depending on the length of the flight and the destination.

ryanair travel rules

Ryanair’s hold luggage is smaller than other airlines, with a maximum size of 120 x 120 cm.

Passengers should note that a weight limit of 20 kilograms is strictly enforced, with an additional charge of £9 per kilogram for any excess weight.

It is important to plan ahead and weigh your luggage before arriving at the airport to avoid any additional fees.

Passengers traveling with sporting equipment such as bikes or skis will need to pay for space in the hold. The rules and restrictions for sporting equipment vary, so passengers should check the Ryanair website for specific information.

Parents traveling with infants can bring an extra baby bag weighing up to 5 kilograms, measuring 45 x 35 x 20 cm, as well as two items of baby equipment such as booster seats, pushchairs, or travel cots.

These items are free of charge for infants between eight days and 23 months old.

Passengers should keep in mind that Ryanair is strict about luggage size and weight limits. Planning ahead and checking the rules and restrictions on the Ryanair website can help avoid any additional fees or complications at the airport.

This beautiful deluxe two-piece expandable luggage set is manufactured with a heavy duty 600 denier fabric. This set is perfect for the serious and experienced traveler! This luggage set includes an upright and a flight tote bag with locks and keys.

  • Ergonomic padded top and side grip handles

Additional Luggage for Infants

For parents traveling with infants on Ryanair, the airline allows an extra baby bag of up to 5 kilograms, measuring 45 by 35 by 20 centimeters.

This bag can be brought on board and placed under the seat in front of the parent. Additionally, parents can bring two items of baby equipment free of charge, including booster seats, pushchairs, or travel cots.

It’s important to note that these additional items can only be brought for free if the child is classified as an infant, which on Ryanair means they are aged between eight days and 23 months. If the child is older than two and requires their own seat, they are subject to the same baggage allowances as adults.

If in doubt, it’s recommended to check the Ryanair website for the latest rules and restrictions and to weigh individual items of luggage before traveling.

Overall, Ryanair’s allowances for infants’ additional luggage are relatively generous, but parents should plan ahead to ensure they comply with the airline’s policies and avoid any additional fees.

Luggage for Children Over Two

Children over two years old, are entitled to their own seat on the plane and can bring their own little bag to go under the seat in front of them. However, parents will need to pay for any additional luggage beyond this small bag.

ryanair flight

The size requirements for the small bag are the same as the free bag that comes with the ticket, which is 40 cm in length, 25 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth.

If parents need to bring more luggage, they can purchase the priority and two cabin bags option, which includes a larger bag that can be stored in the overhead compartment and a small bag that can be placed under the seat in front of them.

The larger bag must not exceed 55 cm in length, 40 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth, and must not weigh more than 10 kilograms. Parents should be mindful of the weight limit and pack accordingly to avoid additional fees.

It is important to note that children over two years old are not entitled to any additional baggage allowance beyond their own small bag and any additional luggage will need to be paid for.

Parents should plan ahead and book in advance to avoid any last-minute fees.

Overall, Ryanair’s luggage allowances for children over two years old are similar to those for adults, with the exception of the free additional baby bag for infants.

Parents should review the size and weight requirements carefully and pack accordingly to avoid any additional fees.

Ryanair charges extra fees for any sporting equipment that won’t fit in a suitcase, and the fees vary depending on the weight of the equipment.

If you are bringing in big sports equipment like bikes or skis, it is recommended to weigh your individual item and check the restrictions on the website. Ryanair is strict about weight limits, and any excess weight will result in additional fees.

It is important to note that Ryanair’s 20-kilogram hold bag is smaller than most other airlines, so it is crucial to pack efficiently and avoid exceeding the weight limit.

The 10 Best Carry-Ons To Take on Ryanair and Other Budget Airlines

author image

See recent posts by Kyle Valenta

If you’ve ever flown Ryanair, easyJet, Southwest, Spirit, or any other budget airlines, you know that size  really  matters when it comes to your carry-on luggage. Each airline has strict size requirements for carry-on bags—and airline staff will absolutely measure your bag if it looks just a hair too big. If it is oversized, you have two options: Put on as many articles of clothing as you can to make your bag shrink, or check it for a hefty sum. You can avoid all that—and keep your flight as cheap as possible—by planning ahead and making sure that your carry-on is the right size before you fly. To make that process a little easier, we’ve rounded up 10 pieces of carry-on luggage that are within the smallest carry-on size requirements for a variety of popular budget airlines. Read on for our favorites.

All of the products featured in this story were hand-selected by our travel editors. Some of the links featured in this story are affiliate links, and Oyster may collect a commission (at no cost to you) if you shop through them.

The Best Carry-On Luggage for Ryanair Non-Premium Passengers and Spirit Airlines:

Ryanair and Spirit Airlines are notoriously strict about their carry-on policies. If you’re flying on Ryanair’s cheapest tickets — which are it’s non-premium fares—you are limited to one small carry-on bag. Yes, you read that correctly. We’re talking one bag that’s about the same dimensions as a regular backpack. While that’s a tough amount of space to work with, it can be done. Spirit Airlines is the most restrictive U.S. airline when it comes to carry-on baggage allowances. At the time of writing, Spirit only allowed about eight liters of space more than Ryanair. With that in mind, the same bags in this section should be considered your go-to when traveling on Spirit as well. We’ve picked a few great carry-on bags that can help you maximize space, plus one must-have accessory if you’re planning on traveling out of a no-fee-sized backpack.

1. Sea-to-Summit Compression Bags

Yellow and green options of the 1. Sea-to-Summit Compression Bags

If you’re going to pack for any trip on Ryanair’s non-premium tickets or on Spirit Airlines, you will absolutely need to maximize your packing space. With that in mind, grab Sea-to-Summit’s easy-to-use compression bags, which come in an array of space-saving sizes. Unlike vacuum-style compression bags, these roll shut and buckle closed, compressing soft items (like clothing) down to a third of their original size.

Thule makes great, hardy gear for travelers and commuters on the go. This roomy bag has a spacious main compartment that’s perfect for your compression bags, as well as a laptop pocket, side pockets for water bottles, and smaller pockets for odds and ends (eliminating the need for bulky toiletry bags or dopp kits).

3. Osprey Daylite Plus Daypack

If you’re after a more lightweight backpack option, the roughly 1.3 pound Osprey Daypack should be your pick. Again, it has a generously sized main compartment and is made from flexible material, making it ideal to use with compression bags or packing cubes. It also has handy side sleeves for water bottles to avoid purchasing water in-air, keeping you hydrated on the cheap.

4. Herschel Supply Co. Thompson Backpack

With its rolltop-inspired design, the Herschel Thompson Backpack gives you a ton of main compartment space and a buckle enclosure that will help you maximize your packing. Compression bags will come in handy here to keep that main compartment organized. The backpack comes in an array of neutral colors, making it a great bag for city exploring when you’re back on the ground.

5. Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack

Two views of the Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack in yellow

The iconic Fjallraven Kanken backpack is a perfect choice for those who prefer a more hipster-ready look. It comes in dozens of colors, too, so you can pick the one that best suits you. It’s tiny, yes, but if you’re only gone for a day or two (and pack sparingly), you’ll do ok. You’ll also look cute carrying this around any city as a daypack!

Carry-On Luggage for easyJet, Southwest and Other Budget Airlines

Other budget airlines are a bit less restrictive—including Southwest, easyJet, and JetBlue, though you should always check rules about carry-on baggage, as they vary from airline to airline. While most budget airlines will allow you one reasonably sized piece of cabin luggage, you will be subject to often stringent weight requirements, so make sure you’re not overpacking. The below options range from larger backpack style carry-on bags to more traditional hard-shell suitcases. However, always check the requirements for your specific budget carrier, as certain airlines are more restrictive than others.

1. Cabin Max Oxford Carry On Luggage – Backpack

The brand Cabin Max is dedicated to creating bags that fit the carry-on size restrictions of budget airlines around the world, so it’s a great idea to head to it for your budget-flight luggage needs. We’re partial to the Oxford backpack, which is the exact size that Southwest permits as a carry-on. It opens like a suitcase, making packing and unpacking a breeze. Is its rectangular shape a little awkward? Sure. But it maximizes space extremely well.

L earn about the ins and outs of Ryanair’s carry-on luggage policy and prepare to travel like an expert and maximize your carry-on space.

Ryanair’s bag policy permits you to bring one personal bag for free , which must be up to 15.7 x 7.8 x 9.8 inches (40 x 20 x 25 cm) and fit under the seat in front of you .

The maximum weight for cabin luggage on Ryanair is 22 lbs (10kg). Carry-on items must be stowed in the overhead bin or under the seat before you . Oversized or heavy baggage may be placed in the hold and checked for an extra fee.

Beat the Ryanair easyJet cabin hand luggage restrictions: My top 5 carry-on backpacks ( Updated Jan 2023)

ryanair small travel bag

It started as a personal endeavour 11 years ago but now searching Google, seems after so many years of flying low-cost airlines, many of us are still on that nightmare quest to find the best Ryanair easyJet carry on backpacks. Trying to fit in with Ryanair-Vueling-Jet2- easyJet cabin hand luggage restrictions is a real labour of love so this is where I hope this article helps.

Travelling hand luggage only can not only save you money but also save you time on a weekend short break. You can check in online and save the hassle of queuing at a check-in desk. Plus once you arrived at the destination, you don’t have to piss around at the luggage carousel. You can jump on the bus or a cab and start your holiday. So driven by personal need and to help you,  I researched and pulled together a guide to the best carry on cabin luggage, travel backpacks and hand luggage that fit within Ryanair easyJet’s restrictions.

First of all, lets check out what these hand luggage restrictions are and what key factors to look out for.

Ryanair Carry on hand luggage

Within the basic fare you are allowed to carry for free a small carry on bag

Ryanair say the size of the free small carry-on bag is 40 x 20 x 25cm and can be a maximum of just 20 litres and I quote from their website ‘must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. ‘ If the small bag doesn’t fit then customer will have to pay a fee of €/£25 at the gate and their bag will be tagged and placed in the hold.

If you still want to bring a larger suitcase or backpack with you ( 10 kgs allowance) alongside a the free small bag ( 40cm x 20 cm x 25cm) then you have to pay €14 per person.

easyJet carry on size for hand luggage

easyJet changed their carry on hand luggage policy on 10th February 2021. The hand luggage you can take onboard is now determined by the seat you’ve booked. Everyone can take one small cabin bag per person on board (maximum size 45 x 36 x 20cm, including any handles or wheels), which must fit under the seat in front of you.

If you have booked an Up front or Extra legroom seat you can also bring an additional large cabin bag – 56 x 45 x 25 cm , standard dimension for carry on luggage.

Vueling carry on size hand luggage

Vueling  still offer the luxury of carry-on luggage but note that they must not exceed the external dimensions of 55cm X 40cm X 20cm . If you do purchase an  Excellence Fare  you can bring a whopping 14kg of hand luggage.

Vueling’s parent airline, British Airways currently allows free carry on luggage as long as the weight does not exceed 46 kgs.

Jet 2 carry on luggage size is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm or less.

TUI’s carry on luggage dimensions are 55cm x40cm x20cm

The general rule of thumb is not to carry more than 10 kgs with your carry on luggage, unless if you are flying with British Airways where the allowance is a whopping 46 kgs.

So again, pack well: checkout the One Bag website  which shares with you tips on how to pack light.

Travelling carry-on only: Invest in packing cubes

Travelling Carry On Packing Cubes

Biggest tip for travelling carry-on only: Invest in packing cubes

Before you start looking at all the carry-on luggage options, I strongly urge you to invest in packing cubes . I recently was introduced to packing cubes from Amazon and these cubes have changed my life. Best thing is that they help keep your belongings neatly stored and conveniently organized. You can pack in so much more with these cubes. Plus the cubes protect your garments against wrinkles, reducing the need to iron once you arrive at your final destination.

This Amazon ( Retails at £13.99 ) 7-in-1 Packing Cube Set includes 3 mesh bags, 3 flat pockets and 1 shoe bag; ideal for separately storing and packing clean and dirty clothes, wet towels, underwear, and toiletries; also allows you to pack your shoes without risk of damaging or staining garments.

ryanair small travel bag

If you want to travel carry on carry-on within Ryanair new carry on regulations and looking for a stylish daypack, the Qwstiom is a beautiful daypack, albert the most expensive on this list.

Even as the BudgetTraveller, I have a tendency to spend lots of money on backpacks and luggage ( other vices are wine, concert tickets and Skyscanner )  and this beautifully designed daypack from Qwstion has been my pride and joy to use on trips and also for day use when I’m home.Ok -some key features to go through with you.

This sleek designed compact day pack measures 42x29x12 cm in its dimensions – Ryanair allows 40 by 20 by 25 so its perfect.

The best easyJet carry on cabin luggage

Here are the best options for hand luggage out there that are within easyJet’s restrictions.

1. Arcido Faroe Backpack

Arcido Faroe Backpack

T he Arcido Faroe backpack has been my trusted companion for many trips. Dimensions are 55cm X 35cm X 20cm so ideal if you booked priority seat with carry on luggage with Ryanair or the upfront seat /extra legroom option with easyJet.

What I love about the Arcido Faroe is that it has dedicated pockets for laptops, chargers, your clothes and passports: perfect carry on backpack for a weekend break or short business trip.

Acrid Faroe Laptop pocket

Cool features of the Arcido Faroe include a special media compartment at the back of the bag which features a pull-tab laptop section, a mesh pocket for keeping all the cables and a further internal pocket for storing all your important travel documents.

I don’t have an extra laptop case ( lost mine a few months back ) so besides giving extra protection, the pull tab makes it dead easy for me to pick out my laptop from my bag at airport security.

Arcido Faroe Backpack clothes compartment

The Arcido Faroe also has a main compartment that includes compression straps to secure clothing packed in that area while allowing direct access on the go. I love how it opens up like a suitcase which allows you easy access to everything in the bag. No rummaging through the back of your rucksack for your socks!

There is a neat top outer pocket on the Faroe where you can keep your keys, loose change and valuables close at hand.  A passport pocket is on the back of the bag, keeping your most important possessions safe.

You have 35 litres of space here but it feels far more generous. Plus it weighs only 885 grams. The other thing I was looking for in my perfect carry-on luggage was the style factor and is this where the Arcido Faroe makes a backpack look cool. It is made with a rugged, heather grey Blendex Kodra that gives it a smart yet understated look.

The bag has a water resistant backing which makes it difficult for water to seep through into the bag. The bag also comes with a 5 year warranty which is great and a testament to the quality.

Price: The Arcido Faroe backpack retails at €76.95 via the Arcido website.

2. Arcido Akra

ryanair small travel bag

I am also a big fan of the the Arcido’s new carry on bag- the Akra . Akra is 35L backpack that is big enough to hold everything you want to take with you on your trip. Perfect carry on hand luggage that’s also is within the size limits for budget airlines. Similar to the Faroe, the Akra has features designed to help you stay organised on the road.

A special laptop harness adjusts to fit whatever size device you’re carrying. Light, durable and water-resistant it is pretty easy to carry around. Contoured backstraps, magnetic sternum-and-hip clasps and a ventilated backplate make carrying a full load comfortable and easy.

ryanair small travel bag

Dimensions are 55 x 35 x 20cm so perfect again if you have priority seating with extra carry on luggage/ extra legroom /Upfront seats with easyJet.

Capacity is 35 litres.

It is made of 100% waterproof materials, which includes a traditional cotton canvas that’s lined with PVC and waterproof zippers. Similar to the Faroe, the Arcido Akra bag looks really cool as these pictures will testify.  Arcido retails at a much more pricey €118.95 via the Arcido website

3. The North Face Jester Backpack

This travel backpack was my go to backpack for the last 5 years. Retailing from $99 on Amazon US and  from £39 on Amazon UK  it is a pretty solid value for money option. North Face rucksacks are excellent quality plus with a weight of just 600 grams this offers you the lightest carry on option. Plus you also have a generous 30 litres space.

The Jester features a large main compartment with front accessory pocket with organiser and key clip, a bungee system on upper pack face, mesh water-bottle pockets, a removable hipbelt, a large reflective patch for nighttime visibility and a carry handle. Dimensions are H48 x W33 x D18cm.

coool. hope i win =D

It’s amazing how much can go into one of the carry-on bags. We traveled to France a few weeks ago with EasyJet. Four carry-ons for four people were more than enough.

I love the The North Face Jester Backpack

don’t really like to fly RyanAir or EasyJet – I try to avoid booking them as much as I can, to be honest. But your choices of bags are really cool and an inspiration to pack light. Thanks.

Hey Romy, I am just wondering if there is a specific reason why you avoid low-cost airlines? Thank you in advance

We have worn out our current carry-on bags and are on the quest for replacements. As my husband and I are older (63 & 54) we want light weight bags that are easy to carry and lift over our heads. Thanks for a thorough review of some great option for us to consider.

We are looking for carry-on options and this was a helpful article. Before having our toddler I would get away with carry-on bags only as much as possible. Now there is so much gear for her that’s less possible, but a good carry-on that is well packed can get you through if your luggage is lost.

10kg is okay. Most budget airlines flying out of Australia now give you 7kg total! That’s doable for a short term trip but not longer term.

I just got back from going to Rwanda and Amsterdam. I checked bags for every flight and it was a hassle. Next time I travel, I plan on doing it with just a carry on, and this bag seems just the right package for what I need! What a great design. Thanks!

The performance of the Arcido bag is superb ! I surely recommend it !

I usually travel with just carry-on sized Rimowa and if needed, a day/work bag (purse or computer bag). But some of the hopper flights I have been taking are tempting me to go smaller.

I love carry on bags, means I don’t have to rely on my suitcase so much should the airport lose it! I’m always worried about that x

Thank you for the share. I may be using one of these airlines in the winter for two destinations. Im terrible for overpacking. Ugh.

This is really handy to know. Even though I have never used those airlines, I need convenient carry-on luggage that is neat and easy!

New Arcido is very nice and also like Lefrik. Use BudgetTraveller and you can get 20% off at Lefrik 🙂

If i am using a soft case like rucksack travel exceed the dimension of cabin allowance and don’t overpack and if it can fit in tester cage. will it be fine for easyjet?

looking forward to hear from your answer comment

thanks Zaid

Sorry am late to you on this one. It should be fine but you’re always running a risk if you overexceed the stated dimensions. Best to buy a backpack that fits within the restrictions for peace of mind

Ryanair hand luggage rules including what you can bring onboard for free

Ryanair hand luggage rules and fees that passengers need to know including what bags you're allowed in the cabin for free - and the rules if you're travelling with a baby or infant

People queuing at the Ryanair desk

  • 09:51, 5 Mar 2024

Ryanair passengers should make sure they carefully check the airline's rules around hand luggage - or they could end up having to pay extra at the airport.

Under the current policy, every Ryanair fare includes a small personal bag that must fit under the seat in front of you. This could be a backpack measuring 40cm by 25cm or a carry-on bag that's 40cm by 20cm.

If you've been on a Ryanair flight, you'll know how seriously the flight attendants take the 'fit under the seat in front' requirement. They regularly check the bag is stowed away as instructed while ensuring that passengers have their seatbelts on prior to take-off.

If you want to bring another bag in addition to this one, you'll need to pay extra - although the airline's CEO Michael O'Leary recently told the Mirror that the fees are not designed to make the budget airline cash .

If you want a second cabin bag, there are a few different options. For example with Priority and 2 Cabin Bags, you get to board the plane first and take both your small personal bag (40x20x25cm) and a 10kg wheelie bag (55x40x20cm) on board. This means you won't have to wait for your bag at the terminal when you arrive. If Priority is sold out, you can buy their 10kg Check-in Bag.

If you choose this option, then bags must be dropped at the airport check-in desk before security to be placed in the aircraft hold. If you require a larger baggage allowance, you can add a 20kg Check-in Bag to your booking. Passengers can purchase up to three checked bags of 20kg in size per booking.

If you are travelling with a child up to 23 months in age, Ryanair allows you to carry two items of baby equipment free of charge per child, "to make your journey as seamless as possible." However, there is no cabin bag allowance for an infant, although a baby bag up to 5kg (dimensions: 45x35x20cms) can be brought for no additional charge for babies travelling on an adult's lap.

Non-priority customers who have not added a bag to their booking can still purchase a 10kg Check-in bag at the airport bag drop desk for £35.99. Non-priority customers who bring their 10kg Check-in bag to the boarding gate may check it in, but it will cost them £46.00.

Passengers who have not added a bag to their booking can still purchase a 20kg Check-in bag at the airport bag drop desk for £70.00.

Meanwhile, make sure to check-in online before your flight, or you could risk a hefty charge at the airport like one woman whose party ended up having to fork out an extra £220 .

Like all airlines, Ryanair also has extra fees if you're looking to bring specific items that don't meet normal restrictions, such as ski equipment or a bicycle.

We've rounded up some of these fees below, with some items costing more or less depending on how long the route is, but it's worth noting that a full list of costs can be found on the company's website.

  • Priority & 2 Cabin Bags: Between £6 and £36/ £20 and £38.
  • 10kg Check-in Bag: Between £11.99 and £29.99/ £23.99 and £35.99
  • 20kg Check-in Bag: Between £18.99 and £59.99/ £44.99 and £59.99
  • Infant/child equipment per item (after two free items): £15/£20
  • Bicycle: £60/£75
  • Ski equipment: £45/£50
  • Golf clubs: £30/£40
  • Musical instrument: £50/£65

Short & Sharp: How Does Ryanair Achieve Its 25-Minute Aircraft Turnarounds?

  • Ryanair has a 25-minute aircraft turnaround time, achieved by quickly removing and boarding passengers.
  • Quick turnaround aids punctuality, helping Ryanair maintain on-time arrivals and reduce its carbon footprint.
  • Benefits of fast turnaround include saving time and money and reducing aircraft idle time to lessen environmental impact.

A turnaround time is the time between the landing of an aircraft and the taking off of a new flight. This temporary hiatus is when the aircraft is not making any money for the airline, as there are no passengers onboard. The longer the turnaround time is, the more losses an airline has; as aircraft have to pay airport charges, the aircraft depreciate over time, and there might also be leasing costs.

5 Reasons Why Airlines Aim For Short Turnaround Times

Reduced turnaround times help airlines achieve their goals for operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

A turnaround time might be as little as around half an hour to as long as two hours. The turnaround time depends upon various factors, such as the type of aircraft operating and whether the operations are short-haul or long. When it comes to economizing the turnaround time , there is no other airline that comes close to the 25-minute aircraft turnaround time of Ryanair. But how does Europe’s largest low-fare airline achieve this impressive turnaround time? Let’s find out.

Major factors affecting turnaround times

Many airlines would try to mimic Ryanair’s turnaround time of less than half an hour. But this isn’t always possible. There are a variety of factors that affect the turnaround time of an aircraft/ airline. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Untimely ground handling services: Ground handling services such as cargo handling, baggage handling, and passenger handling can be affected if there are technical glitches.
  • Aircraft ground damage: IATA reports that aircraft ground damage is expected to reach 8 billion by 2030. Factors such as ground support equipment, passenger boarding bridges, etc., cause aircraft ground damage.
  • Missing passengers: Although this is not as common an issue, passengers who need to board a plane can be missing, adding to the turnaround time.

How does RyanAir manage to wade through all of these issues?

When a department handling cargo (or baggage or passengers) isn’t performing as well as it should, the lag can create a snowball effect, affecting turnaround times. This shows how well-oiled Ryanair's ground-handling services are. Aircraft ground damage isn't as persistent an occurrence, and neither is the problem of missing passengers. Instead, there are other factors that Ryanair takes care of to manage impressive turnaround times. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Removing passengers quickly

Ryanair typically uses stairs at the rear as well as the front of the aircraft, cutting down the time to disembark an aircraft by half. Furthermore, below the front door of the port side of Ryanair’s Boeing 737s, there are hidden airstairs, allowing passengers to deplane without waiting for stairs.

Getting everybody on quickly

Just as Ryanair focuses on removing passengers quickly, it also boards passengers for their flight at a quick pace. The tactic employed by Ryanair to board passengers was coined "Boarding Not Boarding" by Simple Flying's Paul Lucas. This phrase refers to the beginning of the boarding process before passengers have finished deboarding. This ensures that any delay related to boarding is dealt with in plenty of time.

Removal of seatback pockets

You don’t find seatback pockets on aircraft operated by Ryanair. The airline removed these from the aircraft it operated in 2004. This means that the passengers take the rubbish with them, getting rid of the time it would have taken to clean the aircraft and thereby allowing the airline to have a quicker turnaround time.

Having a strict hand luggage policy

Here are a few notes about Ryanair’s strict hand baggage policy:

  • The low-cost carrier only allows passengers to place one small bag to be placed underneath their seats.
  • Maximum dimensions of the bag: 40x20x25cm

Anyone who wants to bring additional luggage onboard Ryanair flights must pay a fee, which starts at £6. Such passengers are given a ‘priority passenger’ status. This status gives the passengers the freedom to place a slightly larger bag under their seat alongside an additional bag that has the following:

  • A maximum dimension of 55x40x20cm.
  • A maximum size of 10kg

However, such passengers with a priority status also have priority boarding, making sure that the airline reduces its turnaround time.

In Reality: How Different Are Narrowbodies' Actual Turnaround Times To Their Manufacturers' Estimates?

Actual turnaround times may significantly differ from manufacturers' estimates.

How does the short and sharp turnaround time of 25 minutes help Ryanair?

There are various benefits of having such a quick turnaround time for airlines and passengers alike. A quick turnaround time is associated with punctuality. This is why Ryanair had an impressive 88% on-time arrival in May this year, though this was a slight dip from the 92% on-arrival time it had in February.

Besides this, Ryanair also enjoys a few other benefits of such an impressive turnaround time.

Reduction of carbon footprint

Ryanair is dedicated to being carbon-neutral by the year 2050. Its quick turnaround time is one of the steps to achieving this. According to a report by Simple Flying

International Civil Aviation Organization encourages aviation stakeholders to commit to the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. An aircrafts idle time increases local air pollution and the carbon footprint of airports. The same paper noted that propulsion technologies have not yet advanced enough to meet the European goals of reduced emissions by 2050, so reducing an aircrafts wait time on the ground is essential from an environmental standpoint.

Ryanair fined me £70 as I boarded the plane – they said my hugely popular cabin bag was 1.5cm too big

AS THE boarding gate official called me forward and I placed my cabin bag in the measuring rack, I felt confident this check was merely a formality.

I was flying from Leeds Bradford Airport to Limoges in France with Ryanair for a three-night break and had bought a new carry-on case for the occasion.

I was flying from Leeds Bradford o Limoges in France with Ryanair for a three-night break when I was met with the charge

But my holiday mood vanished when the uniformed man informed me it was too big at the front – and I had to pay £70 to proceed.

This was nearly two-thirds of the cost of my £111.11 return ticket, which included paying extra priority boarding with two pieces of luggage – one small under seat bag and one 10kg cabin bag.

My crime ? My new IT Luggage case, bought in Tesco for £37, was 55cm x 36cm x 21.5cm.

It would pass the test with competitors easyJet and Wizz Air , who allow 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and 55cm x 40cm x 23cm for overhead bags.

Common household item you should never pack in your hand luggage on a UK flight

But not with Ryanair , the most stringent airline at 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, meaning mine was just 1.5cm too deep to comply.

Budget airlines Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling and Volotea were fined £128m by Spanish authorities last month for charging for carry-on bags, with the country’s Consumer Rights Ministry branding the policy "abusive".

But passengers bagging a bargain flight this summer may not realise there’s an additional costly penalty if this luggage does not conform to the strict dimensions that airlines demand.

For Ryanair passengers, the penalty is £70, while easyJet make you fork out their standard airport bag fee of £48 and WizzAir also has an oversized bag fee - although an amount is not specified on their website.

Even when I moved the contents of the soft zipped pocket at the front of my case into my other permitted bag – a small rucksack – to slim it down, airport staff stood firm.

With the flight boarding, and tears flowing, I handed over my credit card.

My bag was tagged and I was told it would have to be checked into the hold when I reached the plane – but no crew took it at the door and I carried it on as planned.

It fitted in the overhead locker fine.

Other passengers – some who clearly had bags as big as mine - were as incredulous as I was and staff were unwilling to explain why the charge was so astronomical.

While the penalty charges for checked bags with excess weight are easy to find on the airline’s website, this sneaky "fine" is not listed on the fees page , nor does the bag policy section link to the price.

I eventually located it hidden among the terms and conditions after several emails with Ryanair customer services.

The price is higher than the most expensive charge for checking in a 20kg hold bag at the airport , which is £59.99.

As this was a 10kg bag, I could have checked it in at the airport desk for £35.99 at most.

On my return from France , I risked it and sailed through the gate without a problem, even when a fellow flyer remembered me and told her friend: “This is the lady who got fined £70 at Leeds.”

A spokesperson from Ryanair told Sun Online Travel: "This passenger booked a priority fare for this flight from Leeds to Limoges (13 June), which allowed them to carry a small personal bag and a 10kg cabin bag onboard.

"As their cabin bag exceeded the permitted size, they were correctly charged a standard gate baggage fee (£70) by the gate agent at Leeds Bradford Airport."
