2023-2024 Caribbean Cruises

Our new 2023-2024 Caribbean season is our most exciting yet, because our next Edge® Series ship, Celebrity Ascent, is debuting in the islands. There’s no better place for a ship designed to connect you more closely than ever to the sea and all the sun-soaked places on the horizon. But that’s just the start, because with Celebrity Ascent, we’ll have eight stunning ships covering the Caribbean—including three revolutionary Edge Series ships—from the colorful reefs of Belize to the white sands of St. Lucia. Choose from a wide variety of sailings ranging from 4 to 11 nights for just the right amount of island time, departing from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa. Plus, we’ve added the new port of Scarborough, Tobago to our already impressive lineup of tropical destinations, and we’ve brought back a popular double-overnight stay in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. There are so many amazing Caribbean sailings this season, you might want to book more than one.

Itineraries

Returning port, scarborough, tobago.

Scarborough is steeped in history going back to the 1600s, and the British, Dutch, and French all left their mark here. That history comes to life at Fort King George, built in 1781, with its well-preserved prison, canons, and other intriguing relics. Nature lover? The Nylon Pool is your ideal escape. It’s a naturally formed swimming area in the middle of the sea created by an offshore sandbar. Nearby Buccoo Reef is a great place to snorkel. Not to be outdone, Pigeon Point Beach and the Main Ridge Forest Reserve offer even more natural beauty to enjoy.

Cruise Ship Worker Sentenced to 30 Years for Hiding Cameras in Bathrooms

The former employee of Royal Caribbean told investigators that he had been secretly recording people, including children, since December 2023.

A large cruise ship with many levels and hundreds of windows is docked.

By Johnny Diaz

A former employee of the cruise ship company Royal Caribbean was sentenced this week to 30 years in prison for placing hidden cameras in guests’ bathrooms and recording passengers as young as 2, prosecutors said.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, of the Philippines, was sentenced on Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to producing child pornography, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida said in a statement.

He was arrested in March on federal charges of production and possession of child pornography, and was also charged with six counts of voyeurism in State Circuit Court in Broward County, Fla. Royal Caribbean said at the time that it had reported the allegations to law enforcement and fired Mr. Mirasol.

On Feb. 25, a passenger aboard the Symphony of the Seas cruise ship discovered a hidden camera attached to the counter under the sink in a bathroom, prosecutors said. The guest reported the camera to security.

The next day, on Feb. 26, the company alerted the federal authorities, Customs and Border Protection and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

After the ship arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on March 3, law enforcement officers searched Mr. Mirasol’s electronic devices, including a cellphone, camera, Apple Watch, memory cards and a flash drive.

“Law enforcement discovered that Mirasol’s electronics contained numerous videos of children in various stages of undress,’’ the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Federal agents said the children in the videos ranged from 2 years old to 17 years old.

One video showed Mr. Mirasol installing a camera and pointing it toward the shower, according to prosecutors. Another video showed a girl around 10 years old as she entered a shower.

“The focus of the videos was on the children’s genital areas,’’ prosecutors said.

Mr. Mirasol, who had worked as a stateroom attendant — someone who services cabins and cleans the rooms — admitted that he had been placing cameras in the bathroom since he began working for the cruise line around December 2023.

Mr. Mirasol also entered the guests’ rooms while they were showering and hid under their beds so he could secretly record as they exited the shower, prosecutors said.

He tended to hide cameras in rooms where young girls, around 16 years of age, were staying, he told investigators.

“If I like who is in that room, I place it,” he told investigators, according to a criminal complaint.

Robert Berube, a lawyer for Mr. Mirasol, declined to comment about the sentencing. Mr. Mirasol has been held at the Broward County Jail since his arrest, jail records show.

After his arrest in March, Royal Caribbean said in a statement, “We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior.”

Sorrento's pizza: Royal Caribbean's all-day cruise ship pizzeria

Ashley Kosciolek

What's better than pizza? Free pizza, of course, and you'll find it at Sorrento's on Royal Caribbean ships .

Grab a slice at the Italian-themed grab-and-go eatery whenever you want because it's open most of each day. It's a great spot for lunch, a between-meal snack or a late bite to soak up some alcohol after a night of partying.

Here's what you can expect when you dine at Sorrento's pizzeria.

What is Sorrento's pizza on Royal Caribbean ships?

cruise caribbean september 2023

Sorrento's is a centrally located pizza joint found along the Royal Promenade on the Royal Caribbean ships that have it. It's known for its delicious — and complimentary — pizza that comes out fresh and hot almost all day long. (On a recent sailing, it was available from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. on sea days and from noon to 2 a.m. on port days.)

Set in an Italian-themed alcove, it's a walk-up counter that serves several types of pizza by the slice. It's so popular that you won't get any of that "it looks like it's been sitting out for hours under a heat lamp" crustiness.

There's seating at nearby tables throughout the Royal Promenade.

Royal Caribbean Sorrento's pizza menu

Although there's no official set menu at Sorrento's, you can expect a variety of freshly made pies like plain cheese, pepperoni and veggie, and a rotating list of specialty pies that might include sausage, barbecue chicken and other toppings like bacon and pineapple.

You can always request gluten-free or dairy-free pizzas to be made special for you. And if the daily menu does not feature a vegetarian pie, you can special order one of those, as well.

What does Sorrento's pizza cost?

cruise caribbean september 2023

Every single slice at Sorrento's is completely free when you sail with Royal Caribbean. If you want soda or beer, though, that will cost extra if you don't have a package that covers it.

Which Royal Caribbean ships have Sorrento's?

Is Disney open? Is my flight canceled? Hurricane Idalia travel disruptions

Hurricane Idalia roared ashore Wednesday morning as a Category 3 tropical cyclone in Florida's Big Bend area. It's since carved a path of destruction stretching from the Gulf Coast to Georgia, before being downgraded to a tropical storm.

Before even making landfall, the weather was causing a mess for some travelers. Tampa International Airport closed ahead of the storm and has only reopened to arriving flights. Flights at other airports have also been affected, as have some cruise and theme park operations.

Here's what travelers should know.

Live updates: Hurricane Idalia makes landfall in Florida, threatens 'catastrophic storm surge'

Are Florida airports open?

▶ Tampa International Airport , which closed on Tuesday, reopened to arriving flights at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

"TPA sustained minimal damage from Hurricane Idalia," the airport posted on X, formerly Twitter. "Departing flights and normal operations will resume early Thursday morning. Please check directly with your airline for the latest flight updates."

▶ Orlando International Airport remains open and operational and also advises travelers to check with airlines for flight status.

▶ Jacksonville International Airport is currently open and operational, though travelers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest flight information.

▶ Southwest Florida International Airport near Ft. Myers is open but notes some airlines have canceled morning flights and advises travelers to check with their airlines.

Are airlines offering waivers due to Idalia?

The following airlines are offering travel waivers for passengers booked to fly to parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas in the coming days. Check with each carrier for the exact terms of the extra flexibility.

  • Sun Country

Are Disney parks in Florida open?

▶ Walt Disney World theme parks are operating under normal conditions, however, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon water park, Winter Summerland Miniature Golf and Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf will be closed Wednesday.

Disney's resort hotels remain open, but guests of Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground have been asked to store outside items and camper awnings.

"At this time, change and cancellation fees imposed by Disney will be waived for check-in dates of August 28, 2023 through September 4, 2023," Disney said in a statement. "Guests currently staying at our Disney Resort hotels whose travel plans have been impacted by the storm may receive a discounted rate to extend their stay through the evening of August 31, if needed, by visiting the front desk."

Additionally, Florida residents evacuating from the storm and first responders assisting with it are eligible for a 50% discount on new bookings through Aug. 31. The resort also offered to serve as a staging area for the state's storm recovery efforts.

▶ Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island water park are closed early on Tuesday and will remain closed Wednesday. Busch Gardens tentatively plans to reopen Thursday and Adventure Bay plans to reopen Friday.

“Precautions are in place following the parks’ comprehensive weather preparedness plan to ensure the safety of our animals and ambassadors during this time,” Busch Gardens posted on its website, with a similar warning on Adventure Island’s site. “If this affects your trip, be sure to review our Weather-or-Not Assurance and check back for more updates.”

▶ LEGOLAND Florida will remain open Wednesday, but its website notes, "While LEGOLAND Theme Park, Water Park, Peppa Pig Theme Park and our LEGOLAND hotels will be open as planned, guests may experience limited park operations on Wednesday due to changing weather conditions."

The resort's hurricane policy allows guests to cancel or rebook visits without penalty if the National Hurricane Center issues a tropical storm or hurricane warning within seven days of guests’ arrival.

▶ SeaWorld Orlando will have abbreviated hours, from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Like its sister park Busch Gardens, the park's website notes plans are in place to protect the park's animals and ambassadors amid the storm.

SeaWorld's new Weather-or-Not-Assurance policy, unveiled last week, gives guests a 12-month return window if inclement weather causes parks to close early or adjust operating hours, rides are closed for at least 60 minutes due to weather, or the heat index reaches 110 degrees or more.

▶ Universal Orlando Resort was operating normally Wednesday with one exception: no early park admission to allow for additional preparations related to the storm. Universal's hotels remain fully operational.

"We have plans and procedures for significant weather that are both time-proven and constantly updated – and those plans revolve around the safety of our guests and team members," Universal said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The resort's severe weather policy offers penalty-free rebooking and cancellations for vacation packages, hotel stays and tickets booked directly through Universal in the event of a tropical storm or hurricane warning or state of emergency declaration in the Orlando area within seven days of guests’ arrival.

Are cruise lines affected by Idalia?

The storm is also impacting some cruise sailings.

▶ Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady ship visited Grand Turk on Tuesday instead of Mexico’s Costa Maya “for the safety and comfort” of its guests and crew, a spokesperson said in an email. The ship is currently on a five-day, round-trip sailing from Miami, according to CruiseMapper .

“Our arrival and departure times remain unchanged, giving (passengers) the same amount of time to explore off the ship,” the spokesperson said.

▶ Disney Cruise Line also altered the itinerary for Disney Fantasy, which is currently on a week-long sailing from Port Canaveral.

“Instead of visiting Cozumel, Mexico, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Falmouth, Jamaica, the Disney Fantasy is visiting Tortola, British Virgin Islands, on Tuesday and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, on Wednesday,” a spokesperson said in an email. The ship will stop at the line’s private island, Castaway Cay, on Friday as planned.

▶ Celebrity Cruises, which is also part of Royal Caribbean Group, is also amending Celebrity Equinox’s current six-day voyage from Fort Lauderdale , stopping in Falmouth rather than Grand Cayman.

▶ Royal Caribbean International’s Grandeur of the Seas — which is currently on a week-long sailing from Tampa — will skip a stop in Costa Maya and postponed its Monday visit to Cozumel until Thursday, according to a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson.

▶ MSC Cruises is also swapping MSC Meraviglia’s visits to Miami and Nassau, a spokesperson said in an email. The ship, which is on a two-week cruise from New York , will now visit Nassau on Wednesday and Miami on Friday.

The line’s MSC Seaside skipped a planned visit to the line’s private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, on Tuesday and extended its stop in Nassau. The ship is on an 11-day cruise from Port Canaveral .

▶ Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Conquest will also change course during its current four-day cruise from Miami, according to a spokesperson. The ship visited Bimini on Tuesday in place of Key West; will spend Wednesday at sea instead of a stop in Cozumel; and stop in Nassau in place of a sea day on Thursday.

Carnival Valor’s planned stop in Costa Maya on Monday was canceled. The ship, which is on a five-day cruise from New Orleans, visited Cozumel on Tuesday.

Carnival Paradise and Carnival Elation, which left Monday from Tampa and Jacksonville, respectively, will also “remain a safe distance from the storm,” according to the cruise line's spokesperson. “Each ship will return to port when it is safe to do so."

Their next cruises are set to depart on Thursday.

Up to 10 storms could form in September as we head into peak Atlantic hurricane season

Portrait of Brandon Girod

The deluge of tropical storms and hurricanes meteorologists predicted would batter the southern and eastern coasts of the United States hasn't quite materialized as the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season creeps nearer.

That all could change in September as we head into peak hurricane season , according to AccuWeather , which predicts that there will be between six and 10 tropical storms in September. If the forecast holds true, it would be similar to the record-breaking 2020 hurricane season, which had 10 named storms that month.

Here's what to know about AccuWeather's hurricane outlook for September .

Why haven't there been as many storms as predicted in 2024?

That can be chalked up to dry, dusty air brought in by a large Saharan dust plume that blanketed the Atlantic in June and July.

Dust is carried over the Atlantic from Africa every year, but its impacts depend on how much of it is kicked into the atmosphere. Large quantities of dust can inhibit the conditions that are conducive to storm development, which is what happened this year.

That's not always the case, however. Roughly 182 million tons of Saharan dust were carried across the Atlantic Ocean in 2020, which was still a notable year for storms.

The technology meteorologists use to monitor weather has gotten better and helped strengthen their understanding of how it impacts people and their environment. As severe weather continues to increase in both volume and intensity, it's important to make readers aware and keep them informed about potential risks.

AccuWeather's September hurricane outlook

AccuWeather predicts that there will be up to 10 named storms in September, which would be a record month.

"I think things could get very active potentially very quickly here as soon as that dry air goes away," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said, "We could see a parade of storms." This dramatic increase in activity will start at the end of August and persist throughout September.

The Atlantic hurricane season peaks on Sept. 10, but there will be an abundance of warm water that could fuel tropical storms as we head into fall. "We're basically at record-breaking sea surface temperatures across most of the basin," DaSilva said.

AccuWeather predicts October will be a busy month for storms, and even said November could bring one to three storms.

What areas are most at risk for potential storms in September?

DaSilva said that he is concerned about the Texas coast, and mentioned that Florida and the Carolinas are also at an elevated risk of landfall. He says it's not only the storm itself to worry about.

When Hurricane Beryl hit Texas as a Category 1 hurricane, much of the danger was from the tornadoes it spawned. Flooding is also a concern in many areas. Vermont, in particular, saw significant flooding several days and more than a thousand miles from where Beryl made landfall.

"It's been an already been a costly year for hurricane damage and impacts, and we haven't even reached the peak of the season," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter said.

Are there any tropical disturbances in the Atlantic now?

The Atlantic Ocean is eerily quiet at the time of publish.

The 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2024, tropical weather outlook from the National Hurricane Center in Miami said no tropical cyclone activity is expected over the next seven days. Here's info about the two tropical waves:

  • An Atlantic Ocean tropical wave was moving westward.
  • A Caribbean Sea tropical wave was moving westward with scattered moderate and isolated strong convection.

Caribbean Sea:

  • Moderate to locally fresh winds, and seas of 4 to 6 feet are noted over the central and eastern Caribbean. Gentle to moderate winds, and seas of 3 to 4 feet prevail over the western Caribbean.
  • For the forecast, moderate to locally fresh east to northeast winds and slight to moderate seas will prevail through most of the Caribbean through early next week. Light to gentle winds and slight seas will persist over the northwest Caribbean.

Atlantic Ocean:

  • A trough extends southwestward to Northeast Florida. Moderate to fresh winds, and seas of 5 to 6 feet are found west of the trough.
  • For the forecast, the trough will linger in this area today and dissipate by Saturday. Strong winds will pulse north of Hispaniola this afternoon and evening. Otherwise, moderate to locally fresh east to northeast winds and moderate seas will continue over the next few days.

When is the peak of hurricane season?

The peak of the season is Sept. 10, with the most activity happening between mid-August and mid-October, according to the National Hurricane Center.

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.
