Argentina on a budget

round trip ticket to argentina

Epic experiences in Argentina don't have to cost big money – here's how to you take the trip of a lifetime on a budget © Shutterstock / Henrique Nishimura

Argentina has traditionally been considered a budget destination for foreign tourists; the country’s highly unstable economy has resulted in multiple exchange rates, leading to low-cost goods and services. The only large expense travelers usually bemoaned was the high cost of flying into the country – but that’s changing.

Since Argentine President Javier Milei came to power, he’s made sweeping reforms, simultaneously strengthening the Argentine peso against the US dollar and sending the country into a deeper recession. While transportation costs have remained low, the price of eating out and accommodation rates have risen.

There are still plenty of ways to visit Argentina on a budget, though,  especially if you travel like a local.

Average daily costs in Argentina (in USD)

  • Hostel room: $8-$30 a night
  • Basic room for two: $20-$50
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): $10-$50 per night
  • Public transport one-way ticket: $0.42-$0.55
  • Coffee: $3.15
  • Empanada: $1-$2.50
  • Dinner for two: $30-$40
  • Beer pint at the bar: $3

Bring large bills of stable currency (like USD) to get the best exchange rate

While the various exchange rates in Argentina are not as disproportionate as before, exchanging cash will still give you the best rate. Bring large bills ($100 notes get the highest rate), and exchange at a cueva (unofficial exchange house). This way, you will not be charged high ATM or Western Union transfer fees.

Cash also gives you the best rate when purchasing goods or services. If you pay in cash, you help businesses avoid card processing fees, and many will give you a 10% discount.

Buy flights to Buenos Aires from Miami, Los Angeles, or Madrid

If flying from or through the United States , consider booking your flight via Miami or Los Angeles .

Though Houston has the shortest direct flights to Argentina, you can often get the price of a round-trip ticket from Miami or Los Angeles to Buenos Aires for the same rate as a one-way ticket from Houston.

If traveling through or from Europe , Madrid is usually the cheapest place to fly.

A man emerges from a Subte subway station exit in Buenos Aires

Utilize Argentina’s subway, buses, planes, and trains – if you can get them

The only subway in Argentina is Buenos Aires’ Subte system. It’s easy to use, and anywhere in the city not reachable by the Subte can be accessed via bus. Check routes on the Cómo Llego app or Google Maps.

To see the rest of the country, book flights on budget airlines like Flybondi , which usually are cheaper or as cheap as long-distance buses.

Trains to the surrounding areas of Buenos Aires – like Tigre and La Plata – are easy to catch and reliable, but trains to the country's farther reaches can be very hard to get and require advance planning. That said, they are very budget-friendly.

In other cities (except in Mar del Plata), like Salta , Bariloche , and Córdoba , local buses are convenient and easy to access.

In Buenos Aires, take taxis instead of rideshares – except when going to or from Ezeiza International Airport

When moving around Buenos Aires , taxis are often cheaper than rideshares. Taxis do not accept cards, though, so have cash on hand to pay.

Taxis coming to the city from the airport usually want to agree on a set rate off meter, so a rideshare can be worth it to avoid haggling.

The best airport budget option (besides taking the Line 8 bus, which won’t be possible if you don’t have a SUBE card yet) is to take the minibus that picks up passengers just beyond the bus stop.

The ticket costs US$10 and will drop you off in the San Telmo neighborhood. (This is separate from the Tienda de Leon shuttle, which has far more seats and is much slower).

If flying into Bariloche, it’s common to ask people from your flight to share a taxi, as there’s only one way into town.

Book monthly stays, check Facebook groups, and avoid immersive experience packages for accommodation

If you are coming to Argentina to study Spanish, several Spanish schools offer immersive packages. These usually entail a monthly price of around US$1,000 for classes, coupled with a homestay in a local’s house, sometimes including meals.

It’s a better deal to book the classes with the school, then find your own accommodation through Airbnb or a Facebook housing group.

It’s popular for travelers on a long trip to book a week or two in different parts of Buenos Aires to experience its diverse neighborhoods. Save money by staying in one place and getting a monthly rate, rather than the weekly or nightly rates you’ll get neighborhood-hopping.

Facebook groups and Craigslist can be reliable ways to find budget accommodation in Buenos Aires. Look for the term dueño directo (owner direct) to get the best deals and avoid a commission (usually 30%) from rental companies that also post in these groups.

Tents are set up under a grove of trees at the base of mountains in Argentina

Bring your outdoor gear rather than buying it in Argentina

Any outdoor gear you’ll need – hiking, camping, rock climbing – will be expensive to purchase in Argentina due to importation taxes. Check what you’ll need before your trip, so as not to be stuck in Patagonia trying to buy gear right before an outdoor expedition.

Should you find yourself in need of a sleeping bag, some refugios (mountains huts) in the national parks will rent you one for the night.

Buy comida por peso, empandas, or platos del día for lunch

For a budget-friendly lunch, head to a comida por peso (food by weight) restaurant. Select your food, have the attendant weigh it and pay the fee based on the weight.

Another inexpensive option? Empanadas! Empanada shops can be found throughout the country and have both meat and vegetarian options.

For an affordable but more complete meal, go to restaurants with a plato del día (daily lunch special) that will include an entree, a drink and a dessert or appetizer for a set price.

Shop at small shops instead of supermarkets, and cook in your accommodation

Argentina has many verdulerías (fruit and vegetable shops) and carnicerías (butcher shops), and they're usually cheaper and better quality than supermarkets.

Meat and wine can be bought at a low cost anywhere, but fresh produce – particularly imported fruits and vegetables – can get pricey.

Stick with what’s grown in the country. Find out the daily or weekly sales by asking for the oferta (offer) at the small shops.

Eating out is generally the main expense people have outside of accommodation in Argentina. Cooking can save you hundreds of dollars, especially on a month-long trip.

couple dancing tango in a street performance in San Telmo neighborhood

Go to a milonga or watch tango in the plaza

While tango shows at dedicated venues can be impressive, they can be expensive. Instead, go to a milonga (tango club) and see the local dance community on the floor. Check Hoy-Milonga for events.

San Telmo’s Plaza Dorrego also has tango performances during the afternoon, where you can tip performers and not have to purchase an expensive meal option like at the big venues.

For entertainment, go to government-sponsored events

The Argentine government hosts different free festivals and events throughout the year that celebrate the country’s history, music and food. Disfrutamos BA lists current offerings.

Catch La Noche de los Museos in Buenos Aires and other cities for free entry to all museums until the wee hours of the morning. Similarly, La Noche de Librerias turns Buenos Aires’ streets into an open-air book fair, and its bookstores stay open late.

This 'Train to the Clouds' Rail Journey Is One of the Highest Train Routes in the World

Tren a las Nubes runs along the high Andes desert of Argentina.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

In the lesser-visited northwestern corner of Argentina , where the high desert meets the Andes mountains, a historic train travels 13,850 feet above sea level. The train, which is the third highest train route in the world, zigzags up steep mountain terrain, passing over 29 bridges and through 21 tunnels on a rugged, mountainous route.

Tren a las Nubes , or Train to the Clouds, is just that — a journey up the mountains and into the clouds.

The original purpose of the train, which took 27 years to complete and is still considered to be a feat of engineering, was to connect Argentina and Chile via the Andes. In 1972, it began operating as a tourist train, showcasing the mountainous desert of northwestern Argentina. It is one of the few remaining passenger trains in Argentina.

The train is a three-hour roundtrip journey from the tiny town of San Antonio de los Cobres. The tricky part, as a passenger, is that San Antonio de los Cobres is remote and hard to access. It sits 12,385 feet above sea level and requires a three-hour drive from the neighboring city of Salta.

To get to the San Antonio de los Cobres train station, you have three options: rent a car, book a taxi, or take a bus. The journey by car or taxi is three hours, while the bus takes five hours. (The bus leaves Salta at 7 a.m. and makes stops at various sites along the way. This includes Campo Quijano, a town known as "the portal of the Andes," and the colorful Yacoraite Geological Formation.)

Either way, everyone meets at the San Antonio de los Cobres train station for the thrice-weekly noon departure of the Tren a las Nubes.

Upon arrival in San Antonio de los Cobres, passengers board the train and begin the ascent into the clouds . Through the large windows on either side of the train, travelers can watch the otherworldly reddish-orange landscape pass, a high desert covered in native cacti and quinoa plants. The highlight of the train journey is the crossing of the Viaducto la Polvorilla, a viaduct that stretches 735 feet over a valley, with a drop of over 200 feet. It also marks the highest point of the journey, at an elevation of 13,850 feet above sea level.

Shortly after crossing the viaduct, the train turns around and returns to San Antonio de los Cobres. The bus meets the train, taking travelers back to Salta. Due to the dramatic elevation change, medical assistance (and oxygen canisters) are available on the bus and train.

The full experience, which includes the bus ride to and from Salta, takes around 13 hours. Ticket prices vary by date, but typically cost between $130 and $170 for the full bus and train excursion, and between $80 and $110 for just the train ride.

Top 5 airlines flying to Argentina

Screen didn’t play movies, do I was pretty boated the entire flight.

The airport process and boarding were fast. The airplane crew were nice but the food was bland and the seats extremely uncomfortable- my seat had an issue and couldn’t move back and made noise .

Inconsiderate staff, plane was very hot, poor decision-making from the crew.

Flight was delayed due to needing a replacement flight crew. Delta changed the aircraft type in Detroit. One hour delay. But once in the air, good flight

The fight was about 2 1/2 hours delayed, but that was weather related. The flight was also overbooked. But we were in Comfort plus so the flight was fine for us.

Meh. A late flight meant I missed my connections, and a 2pm LAX arrival turned into gettin in after midnight.

Flight was 3 hours late so only had an OK experience

It was very cold because the air conditioner was on high power, and my son got sick.

3 hours late and all they have is was a $12 meal voucher. That’s not even enough to cover fast food.

Among the poorest flights I’ve had with Delta in a while. Entertainment system failed completely on a 7.5 hr flight. Crew seemed distracted and not the normal friendly crew. Flight overbooked it seemed… very crowded.

my tv was a bit broken, and so was table, so the food would keep falling, as the table was loose. they weight the carry on, and make me take out 3 magazines from the carryon, given it was minimally over the 10pound limit (which was a bit ridiculous)

Not enough legroom on flight. I was never offered the option of purchasing a seat with more legroom.

I had an 9 hr layover continuing on to Ushuaia. I expected to have to get my luggage & do customs but I did not expect Aerolinas Argentinas to make me sit with all of my luggage for 7 hours in the entrance part of the airport before they would let us re-check our bags & get back in where there are seats. People were sitting on the floor everywhere.

This is the worst airline I have used in my 30 years of travel. The boarding process was an absolute nightmare with endless lines. It took 4 hrs to get to gate while in Bunoes Aires. Also, they change flight times and gates several times leading us to go to multiple gates. Never will fly this airline again

Aerilineas changed my airport from aero parque to Ezeiza and didn’t take care of my transport. Seats were mediocre and ground personal weren’t very helpful. Too bad that’s the only option to fly to El calafate. Bad service, bad company

Better snacks options for a 3.25 hour flight . There was only 1 choice - a fruit granola bar .

I liked the airport and aircraft crew. I disliked the fact that I and TSA pre check approved but this airline is not affiliated to the program. I was 4 hours befor departure and I barely made it to the gate. The airline does not allow to buy extra luggage online. After waiting 1 hour and 45 minutes to check in my luggage I had to do another line to pay my luggage with another hour of waiting. Only one airline person to process payment. This is ridiculous and I saw so many elderly people struggling in line waiting long hours.

everything, disorganized, the flight was delayed an hour and twenty minutes without any explanation

Terrible, terrible, terrible

Boarding was efficient and painless. Food was not supplied. It will be good if some chips or biscuits can be provided.

The seats had plenty of leg room and the staff were very nice.

Copa performed as expected for the amount of money I was willing to spend for the flight; it wasn’t exceptional but it was not bad in any way either. The crew was good; friendly and straightforward. The food was airplane food, so no expectations there and the entertainment was lacking but that was my fault for owning an IPhone with a charging port that’s not compatible with the rest of the world. I’d fly Copa again.

Left my bags in origin city on a business class ticket , spent about 2-3 days in the same clothes plus the flight .

the planes are not modern there are no phone chargers

As usual, the flight with normal legroom was not very comfortable, but the second flight was much better because we had paid for extra legroom. It was very nice to check our bags without an extra fee.

LOCKED MY BAG WITHOUT CONSENT. Had to have my zippers cut upon arrival in Costa Rica.

Terrible. The flight arrives 2 hr later, no AC. One of the worst flights ever

The plane was so outdated, that it made it uncomfortable. The temperature was hot during the whole flight

Some entertainment and food/snack service would have been nice

All the pessengers should be wait in a line útil the creo and piloto are arrived.

Planes seat could be bigger very uncomfortable for tall humans.

1 hour waiting for suitcases to come out traveling in business class and food in business class is a sandwich? Avoid Aeromexico .

No space reserved for anyone who didn’t have underseat in front of them. Made it inconvenient to get the backs secured. No inflight entertainment in the 190. Bring your own! Food was excellent and we were surprised to get a full breakfast.

TAM is a real disappointment. We had to jump on a crowded bus for a 6am flight - although there were at least 15 available fingers that could have been used by our plane. Then, we were placed on row 30 - the last row of the plane, despite having purchased the tickets a long time ago and being TAM gold plus members. Note: worse seats on the plane. Great way of rewarding your frequent flyers TAM ! I now remember why I stoped flying internationally with TAM and moved to American, United, Swiss, Lufthansa and BA. TAM has no respect for its customers.

I do not read or speak in Spanish. Only English. When asking for help, the people spoke quickly in English and pointed a lot. I wish they would’ve spoken a little slower for me to understand. There was much confusion and hurried in their message and I was unclear as to where to go

Everything was as you would expect in coach - fine. Flight was close to on time.

No air in the middle rows. Had a hard time breathing. Was dying of heat.

Terrible They charged me 157$ for excess baggage even though my bags were within the normally accepted limits Flight was late. Service was poor. The snacks were really bad

Horrific checkin procedure with neither Delta nor Latam figuring out how to check me in. 4 hrs on customer support with both and both airlines pointing to each other who should do checking. I was not checked in until morning of flight, which for international flight is concerning.

Flight from Lima to São Paulo didn’t have USB plug to charge the cellphone.

It was a good experience, the flight was a little too long & the food was ok

Awful, horrible customer service. Flight got delayed and had to spend y the night in Bogota as a result. Very poor

the flight from Boston to Curitiba was on time actually 30 minutes earlier. latam was not able to unload the luggage for custom checkup in Sao Paulo ii took two and half hours . i missed the flight to Curitiba spend the night in hotel and then flying in the morning to Curitiba
