Cars queue up along Madison St. for Lansdale Cruise Night 2018.

As most large-scale events have been laid to waste across the North Penn area by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, one local favorite is poised to buck the trend on Saturday night.

Discover Lansdale’s 10 th Annual Lansdale Cruise Night will take place in downtown Lansdale on Sept. 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., though the event has been modified and will be missing some of the features of years’ past.

“This is not the way we expected to celebrate the 10 th anniversary of Lansdale Cruise Night… no pre-cruise car show, no band and no awards,” said Bill Henning, the event’s organizer. “But, we do invite you to join us for a cruise down Main Street in Lansdale, make a lap or two or more along the old cruise route and, at some point, make a turn onto Madison Street, where there will be a drop off food collection location.”

Henning said the event is open to all cars, though “cool cars are cooler.” Participants must abide by all traffic laws and burnouts are strictly prohibited. No exhaust flames or hydraulics are permitted, and the prohibition of open alcohol containers in public spaces remains in effect.

When exiting vehicles, participants are asked to please wear a mask.

The event also serves as an annual food drive for Manna on Main Street. That tradition will continue this year, however those who wish to donate will do so by driving to the collection point at Madison Street, where they will then hand off their donation without getting out of their vehicle. Henning said organizers will be wearing proper protection attire.

Participants are asked to bring a minimum of three canned goods. For more information on the event, please click here.

Borough officials announced Wednesday night that local nonprofit Discover Lansdale will not claim its annual subsidy from the borough in 2020.

“They voted unanimously to take the $50,000 investment, that borough council authorized in the 2020 budget, and return it to the borough, knowing full well that there was a lack of activities that they could produce in this season,” said borough Manager John Ernst.

Discover Lansdale was created in 2011 as an umbrella organization to lead and coordinate nearly every major activity in town, from monthly First Fridays to the annual Founders Day celebration , while supporting other events already on the calendar and producing an annual business directory – recently updated, post-pandemic – and magazine of events around town.

In the first year, Discover was funded with $125,000 in taxpayer dollars from the borough’s budget, which organizers vowed to reduce each year as the nonprofit grew its fundraising. The borough subsidy did drop to $100,000 in 2014 , then down to $75,000 in 2015 , and has stayed level at $50,000 since 2016 , finance director John Ramey said Wednesday, and Ernst said Discover’s board of directors had said they would like to have it again in 2021 if events are allowed by then.

“They would like to have that money put back into the budget, from the borough, for 2021,” Ernst said, “assuming that we’re able to go back to some kind of event schedule.”

Discover board member Bruce Schwartz said the nonprofit did have a busy calendar planned for 2020, but the pandemic has put a hold on all mass gatherings, so they’ve shifted to programs to support local businesses instead.

“I just want to echo how frustrated I know the town is, and how frustrated we have been this year,” Schwartz said.

“We had great plans, none of which came to fruition. We’ve done what we can, between the magazine and business director, and ‘Lansdale Strong’ and restaurant week , but not nearly what we had hoped to do,” he said.

Aside from insurance costs and materials for those printed products, the nonprofit’s expenses have been “relatively minimal” in 2020 with no events due to COVID-19, Schwartz told the committee.

“We just realize so many people in town are hurting, that if there’s any way it can be put into anything like utility relief, or something that would help some of the more strongly affected residents in town, we would love it,” he said.

“Obviously, it’s your cash, you do what you want with it, and what you think will work best. We’re just hoping to come back stronger than ever in 2021.”

Councilman Leon Angelichio asked if the borough would have any legal issues with not allocating or disbursing the funds. Solicitor Patrick Hitchens answered “my initial reaction would be probably not,” and said that line item in the budget could be considered similar to a police vehicle or other purchase that is funded but not spent.

“It’s just a non-expenditure. If they took it, and are giving it back, it’s very nice that they’re giving it back, but I would look at it as a non-expenditure,” he said. Ramey added that the funds are typically transferred to Discover when the nonprofit requests them from the borough to help cover event costs, but no request was made for 2020.

Angelichio asked if the funds would or should go to any particular fund elsewhere in the budget, and Ramey said his recommendation is to keep it in the town’s general fund for now.

“With the revenue shortfalls we’re probably going to recognize in 2020, I would leave it in the general fund, to try to sustain our fund balance,” he said.

All three members of the administration and finance committee said they were thankful that Discover had chosen to return the funds: Angelichio said he thought it a “nice gesture,” councilman Denton Burnell said “it seems like the right thing to do,” and councilwoman Carrie Hawkins Charlton said she was “very appreciative.”

“I look forward to getting back to the public events. That will be nice, to bring a little bit of normalcy to town,” Angelichio said.

And speaking of events: Discover did announce Wednesday night that they plan to host a modified version of their annual “Cruise Night,” for local residents to drive their classic cars around town, on Sept. 19. According to Schwartz and Discover organizer Bill Henning, the 10th annual cruise night will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., and will not feature gatherings for a car show, live music, or awards, but will collect donated food for local nonprofit Manna on Main Street before cruising around the town.

“It is a pretty stripped down version of our normal cruise night because of the COVID limitation with gatherings,” Henning said.

“With so many cancellations of local events and car shows throughout the area, this year we felt a simplified version was better than one. Plus, with the current situation and difficulties some families are experiencing, we also felt it was important to have the food drive,” he said.

Those who take part are asked to bring at least three canned goods, wear masks, and maintain at least six feet (or two tire lengths) distance from all persons and drivers. Disney Cruise Line to homeport in Asia for the first time in 2025

S ailing from Singapore in 2025, the one-of-a-kind Disney Adventure will offer families throughout the region the ultimate holiday at sea. The first Disney Cruise Line ship to homeport in Asia will be a destination itself, sailing on three- and four-night voyages designed with magical days at sea and filled with immersive storytelling and captivating entertainment like only Disney can do.

"We're bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships," said Sharon Siskie, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Disney Cruise Line. "When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before — and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they'll cherish forever."

New areas to discover aboard

The Disney Adventure will be both a journey and a destination, a voyage of limitless possibilities that brings to vibrant life the core pillars of Disney storytelling.

Through the magic of imagination, discovery, fantasy and, of course, adventure, guests will embark on voyages to seven uniquely-themed areas, each teeming with dozens of incredible characters and unforgettable experiences, without ever leaving the ship.

Disney Imagination Garden will be the emotional heart of the Disney Adventure, an enchanted valley, charming garden and open-air performance venue all in one.

Inspired by 100 years of heroic and heartwarming Disney adventures — from Moana on the high seas to Mowgli in the jungle — this imaginative gathering space will be guests' gateway to an unforgettable journey all their own.

At Disney Discovery Reef, families will shop and dine in an ethereal and ever-changing retreat evoking favorite aquatic characters and nautical stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, including "The Little Mermaid," "Lilo & Stitch," "Finding Nemo" and "Luca."

Inspired by the eclectic world of Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Big Hero 6," San Fransokyo Street will be a family entertainment area pulsing with the energy and atmosphere of a vibrant street market and boasting an assortment of interactive games and activities, shops, cinemas and more.

At Wayfinder Bay, guests will be called by "the line where the sky meets the sea" to an open-air oasis under the sun, where relaxation and exclusive entertainment await. The sophisticated yet casual poolside retreat will reflect the Pacific Islands-inspired artistry of Disney Animation's "Moana," offering some of the most stunning views of the sea and sky aboard the Disney Adventure.

Meanwhile, Town Square will be a celebration of Disney royals — a magical land dedicated to those who wish upon a star hoping their dreams will come true. This fantastical forest filled with shops, lounges, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues will exude the enchanting feeling of summer in full bloom with nods to "Tangled," "Cinderella," "Frozen," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "The Princess and the Frog," and more.

At Marvel Landing, heroes will unite in a destination for fans of all ages. As a celebration of Marvel's larger-than-life personalities, this area will offer Avengers-level adventure, with all-new attractions and experiences that showcase imaginative representations of guests' favorite Super Heroes.

Finally, Toy Story Place will inspire guests to explore, create, connect and have fun in a whimsical, interactive play land with themed food venues and water play areas, where the world of Pixar's "Toy Story" movies and shorts springs to life in surprising and inventive ways.

Where magic meets the sea

The Disney Adventure will offer guests a Disney Cruise Line holiday on a grand scale, including the hallmarks of every Disney cruise — fun and relaxation for everyone onboard, incredible dining, world-class entertainment and exceptional guest service.

Every sailing will include an endless array of indoor and outdoor fun, with exciting attractions, interactive play areas, fun in the sun and special entertainment, plus so much more for families to enjoy together. Young cruisers will have the time of their lives with dedicated spaces and clubs for kids, tweens and teens, while adults relax and unwind with premium dining, lounge and spa experiences.

A highlight of every Disney cruise holiday is the world-class entertainment that brings the ship to life. Throughout the Disney Adventure, guests will enjoy unforgettable character encounters, dazzling stage shows brimming with Disney songs and characters, signature events, first-run films, karaoke and game shows.

Guests aboard the Disney Adventure will also enjoy the exceptional dining and impeccable service that Disney Cruise Line is known for. Guests will indulge in a collection of imaginative restaurants where dinner is more than a meal — it's a chance to feast on favorite Disney stories through immersive theming and distinctly Disney entertainment. Guests will be accompanied by the same dedicated service team throughout the voyage, adding a level of familiarity and attention to their dining experience.

When it's time to rest, guests will retreat to well-appointed staterooms complete with special Disney touches and family-friendly conveniences, such as Disney Cruise Line's signature split-bath concept, which allows two people to get ready at once.

Disney Cruise Line estimates the passenger capacity of the 208,000-gross-ton Disney Adventure to be approximately 6,700 with around 2,500 crew members.
