"Everything about our meal was excellent and exceptional. The food was delicious and the service was great. We ordered prefix menu of one starter, one entree and one dessert for 42 Euros. The tartare, monkfish and duck filet were our favorite, the flavors were exceptional and the waiter suggested great wines to pair with each of our entree. The restaurant is located at the city center of Tours in a small alley, easy to find with Google map. The space is not very big but cozy and warm, the quality of the food is beyond what we paid for, highly recommended!"

Tours has many restaurants to choose from but we’ve picked just a few which the locals recommend. Top of the wine list are the local Touraine wines. Choose from fruity reds, lively and aromatic whites, fresh and delicate rosés and superb sparkling wines. So, if you want to know where to eat out in Tours – read on!

Wine and Dine in Tours

Wine and dine : The restaurant of Chateau Belmont is beautiful. With a gorgeous terrace, set in a park with lovely views of the 17th century castle. The food is seasonal, classic with a modern twist and delicious. There’s also a lovely bar where you can enjoy cocktails and aperitifs with tapas. (57 Rue Groison).

Summer special : From May to September La Guingette de Tours sur Loire is the place to go. A summer festival with a great restaurant area (booking in advance is essential). You’ll find it alongside the river (Quai de la Loire) where over the course of four months more than 100 concerts and shows take place. There’s also mini golf, petanque and more leisure activities. Details at the tourist office.

Aperitif heaven : Place Plumereau. Voted the best square in France for apertifs by the French! Actually it’s good all day whether its for your morning coffee, a lazy lunch, aperitifs or a delicious dinner! The locals call it “Place Plum”…

Markets in Tours

There are several markets in Tours, you’ll find one from Tuesday to Sunday somewhere (the tourist office and their website has details). There’s a flower market, flea market (Place Victoire) and a craft market on Saturday. More than 150 years old, Les Halles is the belly of Tours dishing up fabulous local produce 7 days a week.

Gourmet shops in Tours

Ice ice baby : Tutti Gusti just off Place Plumereau where you’ll find a scrumptious selection of ice creams, sorbets and crepes  which you can scoff under the watchful eye of medieval characters carved into the wooden frame of the ancient building.

Cake my day : There are a dozen chocolateries in Tours and just as many Patisseries. Artisan made delightful cakes and chocolate creations. Head to Patisserie Nicolas Leger for absolutely delicious artisan made cakes that are like tiny edible works of art and hand-made chocolates (59 Place du Grand Marché).

Bake my day : The locals say that the best place for artisanal bread is in the quartier les Halles where there are several excellent boulangeries including L’atelier du Talemelier (30 Place Gaston Paillhou)

Fantastic fromage : Local cheeses include log shaped Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, a a delicious fresh goats milk cheese and Selles-sur-Cher, a disk shaped, slightly nutty-tasting goats cheese.

Rodolphe Le Meunier, master affineur (cheese maturer), Meilleur Ouvrier de France (best artisan in his class) has an amazing array of cheeses (Place Gaston Paillhou).

Practical Information for Tours

Tram & bus service . You can buy a rechargeable bus/tram ticket for €1.60 from a bus driver (including the first journey), which can be recharged at major bus/tram stops for €1.50 per trip or €13 for ten trips. These machines take card and change, but not notes. Simply tap the card on a reader to pay for a journey once on the bus.

Top tip : Book tours of chateaux from the tourist office. Many of the greats are easily accessible from here, Chenonceau, Villandry and Chambord to mention just a few.

Where to stay : Splash out and indulge at the 4*  Hotel Oceania L’Univers . This historic hotel has welcome Rockefeller, Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway amongst many prestigious guests. Wonderfully plush, old school glamour, in a fabulous location and friendly staff. (Parking available).

Great value  at  Le Grand Tours . There’s a range of rooms styles (and prices) in a terrific art deco building. Friendly staff and conveniently close to Tours station.

Get there : Train from Paris takes a little over an hour.

What to see nearby : Chateau de Chenonceau, the castle of flowers which you can reach by train. You can also take a train to  Amboise  and  Blois  from here…

HISTOIRE ET RECETTE DU MOMENT...

La salade cesar, un classic, un peu d'histoire....

La salade porte le nom de  Caesar Cardini , un  restaurateur  italien originaire de la région du  lac Majeur  avant d'établir des restaurants à  Tijuana  et à  Ensenada  afin de bénéficier d'une clientèle souhaitant contourner la  prohibition . Il existe plusieurs histoires au sujet de la création de cette salade, mais aucune d'elles ne peut être confirmée. La plus commune, racontée par Rosa Cardini (née en 1928), dit que la conception fut le résultat d'un épuisement des approvisionnements de la cuisine lors du  4 juillet  1924. Son père composa avec les moyens du bord et, pressé par le temps, dut préparer les salades sur le côté des tables. Une autre histoire dit qu'elle fut créée par un groupe de stars d' Hollywood  après un long weekend festif.

Restaurants, food and drink | ouch celebrate poky, pointy sea creatures at mendocino’s urchin fest, from june 7-16, the festival will fete urchins with nature walks and uni-centric restaurant specials..

The festival kicks off June 7 and runs through June 16 with nature walks, a harbor tour of fishing vessels and an “urchin ranch” and many restaurant specials, including one that pairs high-end Japanese whiskey with creamy uni.

Purple sea urchins are ubiquitous off the coast of Northern California. When their numbers get out of control, they can pose a severe threat to kelp forests, which they love to munch. Otherwise, they can be a toothsome addition to all sorts of dishes from pasta to toast to sushi. (Or a pain in your butt — sometimes literally — if you happen to bump into one in the water.)

You can find all the details at Urchinfest.com , but here’s a short list of what’s going on from that site and VisitMendocino.com . Note that while some events are free, others require tickets or fees:

“Take a low-tide seaweed walk at MacKerricher State Park with Josie Iselin, Larry Knowles and Julie Drucker. These artist-educators will share their knowledge and experience in seaweed gathering and give an in-depth understanding of the delicate intertidal ecosystem. Sign up for this morning walk from 7:00-9:30 a.m.” Details: Capacity: 25. Fee: $35 (includes Seaweed Science Social in the afternoon).

“DIVE INTO SCIENCE FIELD SESSIONS WITH REEF CHECK. Reef Check trains citizen science divers to conduct long-term monitoring surveys of Kelp Forests. Join us at Caspar Beach June 8-9th to watch our team at work! We will also be working with our most recent Dive into Science Open Water graduates to provide proficiency dives so they continue their training and become Reef Check divers! Come chat with us and our volunteers! Our divers are happy to discuss everything kelp and how you can get involved with Reef Check. No sign-ups are necessary—just come and see us in action!” Details: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Caspar State Beach.

“OPEN HOUSE AT THE URCHIN RANCH. Visit the Noyo Center Marine Field Station in Noyo Harbor and learn about the organization’s land-based urchin aquaculture system, or urchin ranch. While you are there, see the underwater photo and video installation featuring the work of Abbey Dias and Patrick Webster, taste wild and farmed uni, and learn more about the fascinating purple urchin from Noyo Center educators.” Details: 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Noyo Center Marine Field Station, 32430 N. Harbor Drive, Fort Bragg. Donations welcome.

“Learn about fine Japanese whiskey from expert Jonathan Darrow as he pairs whiskeys with a multicourse, uni-centric meal prepared by Little River Inn’s Chefs Joe Perez and Marc Dym. Make it a true getaway with a two-night stay at the always delightful Little River Inn.”

“Join the Noyo Harbor staff for a walking tour of Noyo Harbor from 10 .m.-noon. Learn about the different fisheries and vessels that operate out of the marina and how a healthy kelp forest relates to healthy fisheries and thus healthy communities.” Details: 10 a.m.-noon at Noyo Harbor High Dock.
