1. Tourist Visa (TR)

1.1  eligible  a pplicant s  for tr visa.

This type of visa is issued to applicants who are currently residing in Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia and wishing to enter Thailand  for tourism purposes only.

1.2  TR Visa Conditions

1.2.1 TR Visa is valid for a single entry into Thailand for tourism purposes only.

1.2.2 TR Visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issuance. Travellers must enter Thailand within the said 3-month period. They will be allowed to stay in Thailand for a period of up to 60 days, counting from the date of entry. Extension is possible for another 30 days, with maximum period of stay of 90 days, counting from the date of entry.

1.2.3 If the TR Visa holder breaches the entry conditions (for example, if he/she engages in work-related activities), the stay permit will be revoked and he/she will be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.

1.3  TR Visa Application Procedures

• When applying, please exercise extra caution in choosing the right TYPE OF PASSPORT. If you are not a government officer, DO NOT choose "Official/Service Passport"; instead, choose "Ordinary Passport". 
• Once submitted, the visa application  cannot be amended .
• If there are mistakes in the application, e.g.  wrong spelling of names or wrong passport numbers ,  the application will be rejected .
• Applicants will be required to apply and pay again.  No refund is possible . 
• Applicants must ensure that all their details are correct  before submitting and paying for their applications.
• * Additional service fees for online payment may be charged by your debit/credit card providers * Please contact your card providers for more information. The Royal Thai Embassy assumes no liability for additional fees incurred by the applicants for their online payment.

• Verification link will be sent via email.
• Your account can be used to apply for an e-Visa for yourself and also other people in your family (up to 10 applications at a time).
• Your account can also be used for future visa applications.

• Upload biodata page of passport & a photo taken within the last 6 months (must be in JPG or .JPEG format, Size not exceeding 3 MB)
• Enter personal information, travel document details, address and employment information.

• Proof of accommodation in Thailand, e.g. accommodation booking reservation, invitation letters from family/friends in Thailand
• Financial evidence, e.g. bank statements, proof of earnings, sponsorship letter (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family - for singple entry)
• Confirmation of legal residence in a country in which you are applying for the visa. (In case that you are not a national of the country in which you are applying for the visa.)
•  Applicant is required to upload his/her passport pages which contain all travel records for the past 12 months (1 year) since the last international trip.
• Applicant must apply for e-Visa via specific Embassy/Consulate conforming with his/her consular jurisdiction and residency. Applicant is required to upload document that can verify his/her current residency.
• Please upload your picture holding the photo and information page of the passport.
• Pay application fee online: 35 Euro (single entry, non-refundable)
• You can monitor status of your application by logging into your account.
• You may also withdraw your application.
• Once approved, e-Visa will be sent to you via email. You may also download your e-Visa through your online account.
• The Embassy may request for additional documents to be sent via  [email protected]

2. TR Visa Processing Time

• Usually 3-10 working days , depending on the completeness of documents, type of visa, and nationality of the applicants.
• Please apply for e-Visa at least a month (but no longer than 3 months) before travelling.
• Applications by certain nationals can take up to 3 months for approval.
• The Royal Thai Embassy cannot accommodate urgent requests. The applicants must ensure that they leave sufficient time for their visa application process before their planned departure.

3.  Remarks

• Do not come to the Royal Thai Embassy unless invited for an interview.
• Consular officers reserve the right to request additional documents as deemed necessary.
• Visa processing fee is subject to change without prior notice.
• Nationals of certain countries are required to apply for a visa  only  at the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in their home/residence country or at the designated Thai Embassy.
• The applicants must provide genuine documents and information. If the applicants provide fraudulent documents or false information, their applications will be rejected and they may be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.

You can stay in Thailand for 60 Days (2 Months) With the Tourist Visa (TR); and the Visa can be Extended for another 30 Days (Total Possible Stay Duration is 90 Days).

• Two Photographs with white  background.
• Original Passport and Photocopy for Passport
• Photocopy of Residence Visa (This is in case you are applying from a Foreign Country, For example a British Citizen Living in Dubai has to show his residence Visa in Dubai when Applying)
• No Objection letter from the Employer (A No Objection letter is a Legal certificate issued by a company , an agency or an Organization  or even university,… etc. saying that the Person Who is applying for the Visa is Employed and allowed to have a Holiday or Allowed to Travel within the Specific Intended Travelling Period).

Tourist visa, the “TR” visa

Thailand is one of the top tourist destinations for visitors from around the world.  

       Coming to travel in Thailand is not difficult; just apply for a visa to enter the country (tourist visa or “TR” visa) by applying at the embassy or consulate general of Thailand located in your country of residence. The TR visa is valid, at first, for 60 days. But if you would like to continue traveling, you may apply for a tourist visa extension for up to 30 days.

       For nationals of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria and Uganda, a TR visa is valid for not more than seven days.

The following are supporting documents for applying for a tourist visa extension:

1. Application form (TM.7); 

2. One photograph, size 4X6 cm (taken within 6 months);

3. Passport with at least 6 months remaining validity and a copy of the passport, visa, and last permit stamp. You can apply for a visa extension at an immigration office either in Bangkok or other provinces, so just this and you can continue traveling with peace of mind for another 30 days.

The Cabinet approved a number of visa and travel facilitation measures to stimulate Thailand’s economy and promote its tourism, following a proposal by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 28 May 2024.

The measures are divided into three stages. 

Five short-term measures expected to take effect in late June or early July 2024 include the following:

1) Extending visa exemption for tourists and short-term business visitors for a period of up to 60 days (from the period of 30 days) for passport holders from 93 countries/ regions; 

2) Increasing the number of countries/regions whose passport holders qualify for Visa on Arrival (VOA) from 19 to 31;

3) Introducing the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for long-term travel, “digital nomads,” and participants in certain cultural activities, with a period of stay up to 180 days per visit, on a multiple-entry basis within 5 years;

4) Improving the non-immigration visa to facilitate the travel of international students and those nearing graduation in Thailand;

5) Establishing a “Visa Policy Committee” to develop Thailand’s entry processes and improve the efficiency of immigration procedures.

Three medium-term measures are as follows:

1) Grouping and streamlining non-immigrant visa types;

2) Lowering health insurance requirements and expanding the list of countries eligible for long-term non-immigrant visa applications;

3) Implementing the e-Visa system at all embassies and consulates by December 2024.

One long-term measure includes the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will be implemented in line with the e-Visa system.

Thailand Expands Visa-Free Entry: 93 Nations Now Qualify

Thailand's aggressive push to attract tourists through these visa promotions highlights its commitment to reviving the tourism sector and ensuring long-term economic stability.

In an effort to attract more tourists and remote workers, the Thai cabinet this week rolled out a series of new visa promotions, including visa-free and visa-on-arrival schemes, extended stays for students, and reduced compulsory health insurance for retirees.

Starting June 1, the number of countries eligible for visa-free entry to Thailand will increase from 57 to 93. Under the new scheme, visitors can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, compared to the earlier limit of 30 days.

The countries eligible for visa-free stays include key tourism markets like China and India, as well as U.S., UK, Albania, UAE, Cambodia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, Romania, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan.

The Thai cabinet has also approved visa-on-arrival for 31 countries, up from the previous 19. This list includes Armenia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Fiji and Malta

Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke emphasized the importance of tourism to Thailand’s national economy and its role in job creation. From January to May 26 this year, Thailand recorded 14.3 million tourists and aims to reach a record 40 million foreign arrivals for the full year, with an expected revenue of THB 3.5 trillion ($95.73 billion).

In comparison, 2019 saw a record 39.9 million arrivals, generating THB 1.91 trillion in revenue.

New Measures for Students and Digital Nomads

In a bid to retain talent, postgraduate students will now be able to stay in Thailand for an additional year after graduation, provided they obtain certification from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation.

This extension aims to help foreign students secure employment in the country. According to Wacharonke currently there are approximately 40,000 such students in Thailand

Digital nomads will also benefit from the new visa policies. The “Destination Thailand Visa” will now be valid for five years, allowing a 180-day maximum stay per visit, extendable for another 180 days, with another THB 10,000 ($270) fee.

Previously, digital nomads were entitled to only two 30-day stays. Wacharonke noted that this measure targets remote workers, freelancers, and those interested in learning Muay Thai and Thai cuisine.

Eased Requirements for Retirees

Retirees aged 50 years or more seeking long-stay visas will benefit from reduced health insurance requirements. Currently, these visitors must have health insurance coverage worth THB 3 million ($82,000). The requirement is now lowered to THB 440,000 ($12,000), effective for applicants from September to December. Additionally, the cabinet approved the expansion of e-visa application services at Thai consulates and embassies, increasing from 47 to 94 locations starting in September.

Targeting Key Source Markets

China and India are among the largest and most important source markets for global tourism, and Thailand is keen to capture the interest of travelers from these countries.

Data firm ForwardKeys noted a 212% surge in travel from China to Kazakhstan during this year’s Labor Day holiday, with notable increases to Singapore, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, and the Maldives, following the relaxation of visa policies.

While Thailand and China have agreed on a reciprocal permanent visa exemption , Skift had earlier reported that Thailand’s slower recovery is attributed to ongoing safety concerns.

India is also a critical market for Thailand , being the fastest-growing source of tourists. In 2023, over 1.6 million Indian travelers visited Thailand, making it the fourth-largest source market for the country. These tourists contributed more than THB 63 billion ($1.7 billion) in spending.

In November last year, Thailand decided to grant visa-free entry to Indian citizens from November 10 till May this year. The Thai cabinet this month approved a plan to extend the visa exemption for six more months.

If they are limited in time and are from a Visa Exempt country, they can visit for up to 30 days without needing a visa through Thailand’s Visa Exemption scheme . This scheme is open to 64 nationalities from around the world. If someone is not eligible for a visa exemption, they can organize a 15-day Visa on Arrival when they arrive in Thailand.

These are good if you are short on time or only intend to visit once, but to truly experience Thailand, you need time. If you plan to visit multiple countries during your stay in Asia, the Multiple Entry Visa is the quickest and cheapest way to plan your holiday.

What is a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa?

A Multi-Entry Tourist Visa allows foreign nationals unlimited entry to Thailand over a 6-month period. It is issued to people who visit the country for tourism, leisure, or medical purposes. 

A multi-entry visa allows the holder to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days per visit. A person could visit the islands in the south of Thailand, relax on the beach and learn to scuba dive for two months; fly to Vietnam and enjoy the sights of Saigon for a week or two; and then return to Thailand’s northern mountains to experience animal sanctuaries, Lan Na culture, and cook northern Thai food.

With a multi-entry visa, people can enter either by air, land, or sea. Many people arrive by plane and then leave by train or boat.

The visa is valid for 6 months after it is approved. This means that people have 6 months to use the visa and enter Thailand as often as they like from the date their visa is approved. It is easy to confuse visa validity with time spent in the country. Validity is how long you have to utilize or use the visa before needing to apply for a new one. Time in the country is the 60-day permission of stay. A stamp is placed in your passport for 60 days when you arrive, so a visitor can arrive on the last day of their visa validity and still get a full 60 days to stay in Thailand.

How to apply for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa

Many nationalities can now apply for their Thailand Multi-Entry Tourist Visa online at https://thaievisa.go.th/home . This system was updated during Covid and is often the simplest way to obtain a visa.

When applying for a visa online, applicants need to create an account and apply as individuals. Once the account is created, individuals will need the following documents:

• A current passport with no less than 6 months validity beyond the date of departure from Thailand and at least 2 blank pages. Applicants must complete online visa applications with their given name(s) and surname matching their passports.
• Printout of visa application form submitted online, with barcode
• Travel booking confirmation
• Proof of accommodation in Thailand, e.g. hotel booking, invitation letter from family or friend in Thailand
• Financial evidence showing a balance of 200,000 Thai Baht (approx. £5000, USD$5,5000, Aud$8000). This is to prove financial stability over a 6-month period. e.g. bank statements, proof of earnings, sponsorship letter from employer
• Confirmation of legal residence in the country where the application is submitted  (if applicants are not nationals of these countries) e.g. long stay visa, residence permit, BRP card

E-Visa applicants do not need to submit their passport and original supporting documents in person at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. After the e-Visa application has been approved, a confirmation email is sent to applicants. It is best to print a copy of the confirmation email when you are ready to travel. This will be presented to airlines and Thai Immigration officials when traveling to Thailand.

Certain countries are not eligible to apply for an E-Visa because additional documents are needed for approval. 

If you are unsure if eligible for an online visa or do not have access to the online application process, you can contact your local Thai Embassy and organize an appointment. Immigration requirements can change without notice, and many embassies will not allow walk-ins, so it is best to contact the embassy when you are ready to apply. They will confirm the costs and paperwork required.

Minimum documents needed:

• Passport with 6 months (after the intended date of departure from Thailand) validity and at least 2 empty pages.
• Visa application form completed and signed
• Proof of travel booking
• Proof of Accommodation
• Financial evidence – Bank statement or proof of earnings (equivalent to 200,000 Thai Baht)
• Letter of acceptance from institutes or companies organizing activities (if traveling for the purpose of scuba diving, martial arts, or culinary learning) 

All documents in a foreign language must be translated into English or Thai and certified before they will be approved.

The cost of a multi-entry tourist visa can vary from country to country, but an estimated cost is $150 – $250 USD. It is important to note that many embassies will only accept payment in $USD. Confirm cost and currency with your local Embassy or Consulate when making an initial query.

If you are applying online, the E-Visa system will confirm the payment due and process the payment through their secure payment portal.

Assistance with Visa Applications

The process for applying is straightforward and can be done yourself. If you would like help confirming documents are correct before lodging your application or wish to receive approval without going back and forth to embassy appointments, you can enlist the services of a Visa Assistance Agent . These agents are aware of current immigration requirements and will confirm documents are correct to avoid delays. They will liaise with embassies and consulates on your behalf.

Agents will charge a fee for their service but often save you time and money in the long run. They streamline your application process and speed up your approval. Agents can assist with online applications, though you may be required to pay the visa fee directly through E-Visa secure payment portal.

Tourist Visa Restrictions

As noted above, Multiple Entry Tourist Visas are for tourism, leisure, or medical purposes only. Foreigners cannot earn income, study long-term, or conduct volunteer activities in Thailand if they have entered with a tourist visa.

If you wish to take part in any of the above activities, you will need to look at long-term visa options. You can contact your local Thai embassy to discuss options, or seek assistance from a Visa Agent to apply for a long-term visa .

Arriving in Thailand

When you arrive in Thailand, you will need to provide the following documents at Passport Control:

• Passport with approved visa attached (if you applied at an Embassy)
• Confirmation letter of visa approval (if you applied online)
• Confirmed exit flight from the country no later than 60 days
• Confirmed accommodation (at least for the first night in the country)
• Current financial or bank statement showing funds available (200,000 Thai Baht equivalent)

A good practice is to print copies of these documents. Entry approval is at the discretion of immigration officers and presenting hard copies of these documents will speed your processing through Passport Control and help ease congestion at the airport.

Extending your Tourist Visa

If you decide you would like to stay for longer than 60 days before visiting somewhere else, it is possible to extend your stay in Thailand. Visitors with a Multi-Entry Tourist visa can extend their time in the country by 30 days by visiting a local Thai Immigration Office. An extension of stay will cost 1900 Thai Baht and must be paid in cash (Thai Baht) when applying for the extension. 

When you extend your stay, a new stamp will be placed in your passport for 30 days from the date you are at immigration, so it is best to do this towards the end of your 60-day visit.

You need to visit the office before your current stay period expires. Staying in the country past your exit date will cause an “overstay” and you will be fined 500 baht per day after your official exit date. An overstay is noted in your passport and can affect future visa applications. This extension of stay is only available in the country.

It is important to note that Thai Immigration offices are not open on weekends.

Thailand is rolling out a variety of new visa programs designed to stimulate tourism.

The new measures, approved by Thai officials on Tuesday, include a 60-day visa exemption, a new Destination Thailand visa program and a measure that allows foreign university students who have studied in the country to remain for a year after graduation.

The new slate of visa measures also includes a long-stay visa for retirees, according to China Daily . Tourists from some 36 countries are expected to benefit from the sweeping changes when it comes to exploring Thailand.

Most notably, the visa announcements include an extension of the visa-free period for travelers from 30 days to 60 days. That change is set to take effect in June.

Additionally, Thailand's government has increased the number of countries that are eligible for a visa-free stay. Now a total of 93 countries are part of the program. Previously the figure was 57. Some of the countries that have been added include Cambodia, India, Kazakhstan and Laos.

The changes also include an increase in the number of countries whose citizens are eligible for visa on arrival. That program has been expanded from 19 countries to 31.

Digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, Muay Thai students and Thai food students will also benefit from the visa changes. The allowed period of stay in Thailand for individuals in this category has been tripled from the current 60 days to 180 days.

The Thai government is also lengthening the duration that foreign university students can remain in the country. They can now stay up to one year. The additional time will allow them to work in jobs that are not restricted to just Thai citizens, according to China Daily.

It is estimated that the cost of lost collections from all the new visa measures totals about $340 million annually.
