Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” from the 1983 album “Frontiers,” arrived 40 years ago and went on to peak at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. To commemorate its release, rock artists Daughtry and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm have teamed up for tribute single, which Chris Daughtry tells Variety was inspired by the show “Stranger Things.”

“We wanted to do a classic cover and we had kicked around the idea of doing something that had this ’80s vibe,” he says. “There were a couple of songs we had in the mix.”

Daughtry had another idea: to turn the song into a duet. He immediately thought of Hale. “Lzzy and I had been talking for years about working on a song together, whether it be an original or a cover,” he says of his past tourmate. “We’ve done stuff live before, but never recorded anything. I texted her about doing ‘Separate Ways’ and she was, like, ‘That’s my go-to karaoke song! I’m all in.”

Producers Marti Frederiksen and Scott Stevens recorded the two in Nashville. Sys Daughtry: “Everybody was in their own spaces doing their parts. It was such a fun experience just watching Lzzy work. She’s such a pro and an incredible vocalist. There’s a few singers that make me jealous of what they’re able to do with their voice, and she’s one of them.”

An added bonus: Frederiksen’s studio had a kick drum head with the Journey logo on display. “I’m looking at that drumhead, like, this wasn’t even planted here,” was it?” says Daughtry. “It showed that it was meant to be — just a little happy accident.”

Added Hale: “Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years. What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. Journey!”

Daughtry is set to tour starting in March.

DAUGHTRY Teams Up With LZZY HALE For Cover Of JOURNEY's 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)'

Multi-platinum rock band DAUGHTRY has released a new cover song, "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" , a tribute to legendary rock band JOURNEY featuring vocals from Lzzy Hale , lead singer of HALESTORM . The cover releases exactly 40 years to the day that the original song was released on January 5, 1983.

" Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years. What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY !" said Lzzy . "This song is not only part of the 'Stranger Things' soundtrack, but has been my go-to for karaoke for as long as i can remember! I'm so honored to have been a part of this and I hope it makes you smile as big as I did while recording it!"

Chris added: "I've always loved the song and I was wanting to do a classic cover and my wife and I were watching the 'Stranger Things' season finale and there's this incredibly intense scene and 'Separate Ways' was a big part of this scene. It was so moving just the way it was used, it felt so cool and epic and I was immediately like 'THIS is the one! We have to cover this song.' Then I was, like, 'How can we make this extra special? What if it was a duet? What if we got Lzzy on it!!??" Needless to say I was pumped she said yes and I absolutely love how it turned out."

DAUGHTRY , one of the most visible and best-selling rock bands of the 21st Century, has sold out concerts across the globe. Their debut album, the self-titled "Daughtry" , was the top-selling album of 2007, and was the fastest-selling rock debut album in SoundScan history. It was also nominated for four Grammy Awards and won four American Music Awards and seven Billboard Music Awards , including "Album Of The Year". The subsequent albums, "Leave This Town" (2009), "Break The Spell" (2011) and "Baptized" (2013) have all gone platinum, with "Cage To Rattle" (2018) certified gold. In 2020, DAUGHTRY released its first single from the album "World On Fire" , which marked a return to the band's rock roots and the top of the charts. Their current single, "Heavy Is The Crown" , has been met with great enthusiasm, and is currently climbing the charts.

Daughtry + Lzzy Hale Give Powerhouse Vocal Performances Covering Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’ for Song’s 40th Anniversary

It takes a powerhouse voice to take on the Journey classic, "Separate Ways," so how about we give you two? Daughtry has covered the song, with a vocal assist from Halestorm 's Lzzy Hale giving us the first must-listen cover of 2023!

The song is arriving today (Jan. 5) to coincide with the actual 40th anniversary of the original track's release. "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" initially appeared on Journey's 1983 album, Frontiers , serving as the record's lead single. The track provided a vocal showcase for Steve Perry , eventually shooting up the charts to hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and crossing over to hit No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track saw a bit of a revival over the past year with its usage in the Netflix series, Stranger Things .

“Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years," says Lzzy Hale. "What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY!”

She adds, “This song is not only part of the Stranger Things soundtrack, but has been my go-to for karaoke for as long as i can remember! I’m so honored to have been a part of this and I hope it makes you smile as big as I did while recording it!” And now we can't get the idea of Lzzy Hale doing karaoke to this song out of our head.

Daughtry comments, “I’ve always loved the song and I was wanting to do a classic cover and my wife and I were watching the Stranger Things season finale and there's this incredibly intense scene and 'Separate Ways' was a big part of this scene. It was so moving just the way it was used, it felt so cool and epic and I was immediately like 'THIS is the one! We have to cover this song.'”

He adds, "Then I was like, 'How can we make this extra special? What if it was a duet? What if we got Lzzy on it!!??' Needless to say I was pumped she said yes and I absolutely love how it turned out."

The cover doesn't disappoint, with Daughtry and Hale showing some serious vocal power. The Daughtry version does take a few liberties with the arrangement, allowing for he and Hale to make the cover their own. Interestingly enough, with the two booming vocalists showing off their pipes early on, the song ends with powerful whisper vocals. Take a listen below, and be sure to find the track via the platform of your choosing here .

Daughtry and Lzzy Hale Cover Journey’s 1983 Power Ballad “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”

by Tina Benitez-Eves January 6, 2023, 3:04 pm

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Journey classic “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” Daughtry and Halestorm ‘s Lzzy Hale have teamed up to cover the classic ballad.

Videos by American Songwriter

“Get ready for Daughtry’s cover of ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey featuring me—My favorite Journey song by the way,” teased Hale on Instagram a day before the release of the track on Jan. 6.

She added, “I’ve wanted to release a duet with Chris Daughtry since we went on tour together in 2013. It’s not every day that I get the opportunity to parley with a vocalist who is just as devoted (i.e. nerdy) as I am. What a talent he is, as well as being such a wonderful human to be around. Thank you Chris for asking me to the prom.”

Daughtry revealed that he wanted to do a classic cover, something with an ’80s vibe, and was inspired to cover the Journey hit after watching the season four finale of Stranger Things, which featured the classic.

“It was such an incredible episode, the way it was so cinematic,” said Daughtry . “I remember the song coming on, and the way they had chopped it up with the scenes. It was so vibe-y. I was like, ‘this is it.’”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by LZZY HALE (@officiallzzyhale)

When thinking of turning the song into a duet, Daughtry immediately thought of Hale. “Lzzy and I had been talking for years about working on a song together, whether it be an original or a cover,” he said. “We’ve done stuff live before, but never recorded anything. I texted her about doing ‘Separate Ways’ and she was, like, ‘That’s my go-to karaoke song! I’m all in.’”

Working with producers Marti Frederiksen, who Daughtry said had a Journey drumhead in the studio, and Scott Stevens, the two recorded their parts as a charged-up metal ballad.

“Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years,” said Hale. “What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences—Journey.”

Released on Journey’s eighth album, Frontiers, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” was released on Jan. 5, 1983, and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Journey is scheduled to go on tour in 2023 in support of their 15th album, Freedom , released in 2022.

The band Daughtry is set to kick off the UK leg of their Dearly Beloved Tour, named after their most recent 2021 album, in March 2023, while Halestorm starts their world tour in New Zealand on Jan. 30.

About the 80s

8 Movies and Shows That Played Journey’s Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) Song

Let’s face it, Journey was one of the most prominent bands of the 80s that they top almost all of today’s hit playlist, the biggest one being Don’t Stop Believing (1981).

But as for one of our personal favorites, Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), it peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and spent four weeks as the first on the Top Tracks chart.

8 Movies and TV Shows that Played Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

As for the movies that played Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), there were a ton. The reason for this is simply because it’s a powerful song that draws a lot of emotion. It’s also very catchy! So here they are. Enjoy!

1. The Simpsons

During season 16, episode 2, All’s Fair in Oven War, Homer had the family’s kitchen remodeled for Marge. She added some dishes to it, which got great reviews, and she was invited by Ned Flanders to enter the Ovenfresh Bakeoff. Although she quickly realized the competition was a lot harder than it looked.

The Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) song played in Homer’s car as a cultural reference before he asked himself to turn it down. The episode won great reviews from numerous critics.

2. The 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Recorded live on April 7th, 2017 in Cleveland, OH, The 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony honored six new inductees, including ELO, Joan Baez, Journey, Pearl Jam, Tupac Shakur and Yes. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) was played by Journey.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was established in 1983 in Cleveland, OH and is dedicated to recording the history of some of the best known and most influential bands, produced and musicians as well as other that have in some way greatly influenced the rock and roll industry.

3. TRON: Legacy (2010)

This song was awesome enough to be the opener of Tron: Legacy (2010) as Sam Flynn entered his father’s abandoned arcade. Pretty good opening song for a tech movie we might add. It also played in the background when Daft Punk entered Flynn’s Arcade in a similar manner at the beginning of the official music video “Derezzed.”

4. Yes Man (2008)

The song is best known in Yes Man for playing after Carl (Jim Carrey) escapes from the hospital in a white hospital gown on his nurse friend’s crotch rocket to confess his love for Allison (Zooey Deschanel). The song was meant to symbolize his transition from a No Man to a Yes Man. Fun fact: the song also plays on Carl’s ringtone, mostly when his friends were calling him to hang out (whom he neglected at the beginning of the movie).

5. Cold Case (2004)

Cold Case Greed

In episode 20 of season 1, Greed , the team reopened a 1980’s case of a wealthy corporate stockbroker who set up a Ponzi scheme, which left many of its colleagues broke when it crashed. He was then murdered in an apparent carjacking. The song played when the four friends had to go their separate ways in 1980.

6. The O. C. (2004)

The O.C. TV series is about the troubled but close-knit young group of people living in the wealthy, upper-class neighborhood of Newport Beach, Orange County, CA. In In episode 21 of season 1, The Goodbye Girl , Anna was leaving, Theresa was staying and Seth thought he was the reason why Anna was planning on returning to Pittsburgh.

Ryan also knows he’s why Theresa was staying, but there wasn’t much either of them could do. Caleb was the Rivera’s Man of the Year.

The Separate Song (Worlds Apart) played in the while the two friends were in the car driving down the highway. One of them apparently didn’t like the song while the other almost yelled at him, “Do not insult Journey”.

7. Mystery Science Theater 3000

Abbreviated as MST3K , this cult comedy television series is about experimenting on the human mind when Joel Robinson (Joel Hodgson) was shot into space and forced to watch bad movies. Meanwhile, mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieau) and his crony Frank (Frank Conniff) monitor his mind as they encounter various adventures. In episode 20 of season 9, Space Mutiny , Mike and the robots learned the 80s were worse than they thought as they endured the sci-fi movie Space Mutiny (1988).

8. Beavis and Butthead (1993)

In this animated MTV series about two teenage heavy-metal fans who did idiotic things because they’re bored, they thought everything was either “cool” or “sucks”. In episode 16 of season 3, Buff ’N’ Stuff, the pair were so thin they were forced to stay after gym for a personal workout with Coach Buzzcut.

While watching the music video, Beavis and Butthead were commenting on the music video, saying it was “horrible” and “this guy (Steve Perry) sucks”.

About Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

Separate Ways World Apart by Journey

The song was first written and composed in 1982 during the Escape tour. Just after two weeks of writing the song, they included it in their concerts, including Day on the Green and another at Chicago’s Rosemont Horizon. Both Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry had worked on the song backstage where Steve was working on the bass and he on the guitar, putting together the melody that night and the lyrics the following day. Here’s what Cain commented about the song:

“We wanted to write something rhythmic and still have a strong and haunting melody. We needed a main rhythm to run through the synthesizer and Steve Smith designed that kind of drum beat to let everything breathe. It’s really a throwback to all of our roots and the Motown sound. Steve [Perry] has always listened to a lot of Motown records, songs with a strong chorus approach. Songs that were real urgent sounding, but still had rhythm and melody.”

The Music Video

If you love Journey, you probably love the song and well, hate the music video. We agree they did a pretty poor job as a result of many controversies before its release. Steve Perry , the lead singer and writer of Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) really did not want a choreographed video, saying “We’re performers, we’re entertainers, but we’re not actors…and we were not a very photogenic band.”

Nevertheless, the video has millions of views and thousands of likes, so their overall popularity did make up for a poorly made video.

Steve Perry has such an amazing voice; he is truly gifted. No matter the song or the video, he consistently gave it his all, and the emotion and passion always shown through. So yes, love the song and the video to Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)!

Todo lo que canta Steve Perry tiene magia,su voz es angelical.

This song epitomises what makes 80’s power ballads so good. Perry’s voice complements the songs message and the urgency of the choruses resolution perfectly. I don’t remember Journey much (in Australia) but having picked up on them about 20 years ago, something from them is on every playlist I’ve made. Rock on!

I may be in a very small minority when I say I love the video! In fact I love it so much that when I visited San Francisco in 2001, I visited the pier they shot it on and listened to it on headphones whilst possibly playing air keyboards!

I do concede that some of it does make me cringe though, especially when they sing towards the woman model and to camera. I can imagine how embarrassing that would have been, especially having to do it over and over to get a good take.

Family Films Shot-for-Shot Remake of Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’ Music Video

' src=

Families are finding very unique ways to bond and pass the time while in quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic, like the Heller family from Washington who filmed a shot-for-shot recreation of Journey’s music video for “Separate Ways.”

The Heller family gave an interview to  Today and said they shot their version of the video in just one day on iPhones.

“When my wife came to me with the idea, my first thought was, ‘That sounds like a lot of work!’,” said father Steve Heller.

But their hard work clearly paid off as evident in the video below.

Eva Under Fire Roars Through Heavy Cover of Journey’s “Separate Ways”

eva under fire separate ways

Has the world finally remembered Journey had hits beyond “Don’t Stop Believin’?” The song wasn’t even their biggest single at the time (at least in the US), but, judging by Spotify play counts, it has now eclipsed any of their other hits. But in the cover world, at least, the great “Separate Ways” is making a comeback. Karine Hannah covered it in February , and now that gets followed up with a killer version by hard-rock band Eva Under Fire.

In her recent feature on AOR covers , Hope Silverman wrote:

When it comes to Journey covers, there isn’t a lot of middle ground. On the one hand, you have the acolytes, who tend to be so faithful to the originals that their covers often amount to nothing more than karaoke. Then there are those who take the insufferably ironic approach, donning wigs while performing songs in a “comedic” fashion. Like it or not, Journey songs, and the “Separate Ways” video , in particular, lend themselves pretty easily to that kind of mockery.

Eva Under Fire symphonic-metal version threads that needle perfectly. It’s fun but not funny , taking the song seriously enough but still giving it that over-the-top theatrical bombast it needs. And damn singer Amanda Lyberg can belt; next time Journey needs another lead singer, maybe give her a call?

Steve Perry comments on Journey's 'Separate Ways' featuring in Stranger Things 4

The singer made his own remix

Former Journey frontman Steve Perry has commented on ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’ featuring in the penultimate episode of Stranger Things 4.

Back in April, the first official trailer for Netflix’s Stranger Things 4 premiered featuring a suitably epic Bryce Miller/Alloy Tracks Remix of Journey’s 1983 song ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’.

The second part of Stranger Things 4 launched on Netflix last week and the penultimate episode, Papa, climaxes with the dark remix of the Journey anthem playing as the characters Lucas, Max, and Erica arrive at the Creel house and prepare for their part in the battle with evil villain Vecna.

There are two remixes on the newly released official soundtrack, Stranger Things: Soundtrack from the Netflix Series, Season 4 – the Bryce Miller/Alloy remix and a fresh extended mix by Steve Perry and Bryce Miller.

Steve Perry explains he was inspired to remix the track himself after hearing the Bryce Miller/Alloy version.

“I was stunned at how cool (the remix) was,” enthuses Steve Perry. “I found out that Bryce Miller and Troy MacCubbin had created it and I told them how much I loved it. One week later, I had an idea for an extended version, so I called Bryce and we assembled our Extended Remix.”

He added: “Being a huge fan of the show, having my music on the soundtrack made me very happy! I truly love both these remixed versions as much as I do the original recording from the Journey Frontiers record.”

Bryce Miller told Forbes: “It was really cool to work with Steve and he had some really nice things to say.

“One of his favourite things now in his career is hearing these songs that he wrote decades ago get new life and be brought to new generations and new demographics through things like Stranger Things.”

Of course, Journey aren’t the only rock act to feature in the latest season of Stranger Things.

KISS’s ‘Detroit Rock City’, Siouxsie And The Banshees’ ‘Spellbound’, Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Up Around the Bend', RATT's 'Round and Round' and The Cramps’ ‘I Was A Teenage Werewolf’ are among the tracks that have featured.

Just like Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’, Metallica have been surging up the charts in recent days after ‘Master of Puppets’ was used in a pivotal scene featuring the character Eddie Munson.

A Top 10 hit upon its release in 1971 as a trimmed down three-minute single, to truly understand the brilliance of 'Won't Get Fooled Again' you have to listen to the sprawling eight-and-a-half-minute album version. Pete Townshend wrote 'Won't Get Fooled Again' as a critique about power and revolution, and the song is loosely broken down into three thematic parts – the uprising in the first verse, the overthrow of power in the middle, and the new regime being a replica of the old regime later in the song, hence lines like "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

19) Deep Purple – ‘Child in Time’ (1970)

Loosely inspired by the Cold War and themes of inhumanity, Deep Purple's progressive rock opus is a musical odyssey of the highest calibre. Embracing the quiet/loud dynamic, throughout the all-too-short 10 minutes each band member is at the top of the game - from Ritchie Blackmore's searing riffs to Ian Gillan's emotionally wrought (and oft screeching) vocals to Jon Lord's ominous organs to the pulsing rhythms of Roger Glover and Ian Paice. A monumental and magnificent rock epic.

18) Metallica – ‘Enter Sandman’ (1991)

The opening track and lead single from Metallica's 1991 self-titled album (aka 'The Black Album'), 'Enter Sandman' opens with Kirk Hammett's plaintive guitar playing before crushing guitars and sonic fury are unleashed on the listener. True it's not as raw as some of Metallica's earlier songs, but 'Enter Sandman' is a heavy metal masterclass that fuses nightmarish lyrics with thunderous music and searing riffs.

17) Led Zeppelin – ‘Whole Lotta Love’ (1969)

Colossal sounding, dirty-as-hell, gloriously lewd and sonically experimental, 'Whole Lotta Love' needs very little introduction. Jimmy Page's iconic riff is one of the purest and most timeless riffs he ever created with Led Zeppelin, while John Paul Jones and John Bonham give the track poise, rhythm and muscle. However, it's Robert Plant who manages to grab the headlines with his sexually charged and highly lascivious lines like "Way down inside", "I'm gonna give you every inch of my love" and, of course, "I wanna be your backdoor man!"

16) Motörhead – ‘Ace of Spades’ (1980)

Motörhead purists might argue that there are better songs in the band's formidable musical arsenal, but 'Ace of Spades' is easily Lemmy, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor and "Fast" Eddie Clarke's most popular and enduring tracks. Pure musical alchemy, 'Ace of Spades' opens with Lemmy's pummelling bass intro before crashing drums and whirring guitars enter the fray and Mr Kilmeister spouts gambling themed lyrics in his idiosyncratic guttural growl. Exhilarating and electric.

15) AC/DC – ‘Highway to Hell’ (1979)

The second highest placing Bon Scott-era AC/DC song on our countdown, 'Highway to Hell' is three-and-a-half minutes of primal, powerful and perfect guitar-drive rock. Like so many riffs in AC/DC's legendary repertoire, Angus Young's riff is truly timeless, while Bon Scott is at his commanding best. With 'Highway to Hell', AC/DC once again proved that simplicity is often the key to rock n' roll brilliance.

14) AC/DC – ‘Thunderstruck’ (1990)

Powered by scintillating riffs from Angus and Malcolm Young, rabble-rousing chants, screeching vocals from Brian Johnson and muscular rhythms from Chris Slade and Cliff Williams, 'Thunderstruck' is the sound of AC/DC at their most electrifying and one of the standout moments of the post-Bon Scott era. Such is its popularity, 'Thunderstruck' was the first AC/DC track to surpass one billion views on YouTube.

13) Gun N’ Roses – ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ (1987)

Of course, it wouldn't be a Greatest Rock Song poll without Gun N' Roses' signature song 'Sweet Child O' Mine' rearing its head. The 'Appetite for Destruction' anthem is so all-pervading and ubiquitous that even Slash says he "cringes" when he hears his iconic riff in public, however, ignoring the over-exposure, there's no doubt that 'Sweet Child O' Mine' is a rock classic.

12) Iron Maiden – ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ (1982)

Iron Maiden's fifth song to appear on our countdown is 'The Number of the Beast' classic 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'. Performed on every Iron Maiden tour – except the Maiden England World Tour and The Book of Souls World Tour – for the past four decades, the Steve Harris penned seven-minute epic details the macabre story of a prisoner about the be hanged. Not only is it one of Iron Maiden's greatest songs from their legendary back catalogue, it's also one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

11) Deep Purple – ‘Smoke on the Water’ (1972)

Ritchie Blackmore's instantly recognisable guitar riff on 'Smoke on the Water' was voted the Greatest Rock Riff of All Time by Planet Rock listeners five years ago, and the seminal song has duly been voted into the Top 20 on our new poll. Blackmore noted years later that he took inspiration from Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven, and he owes the deceased composer a lot of money. Thematically, 'Smoke on the Water' was inspired by the devastating fire at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland in December 1971 where the band had decamped to record what would become their sixth album, 'Machine Head.'

10) Meat Loaf – ‘Bat Out of Hell’ (1977)

The opening track on Meat Loaf's debut album of the same name, as statements of intent go, they don't get much better than 'Bat Out of Hell.' The brilliantly bombastic track's lyrics were described as "a rock 'n roll sci-fi version of Peter Pan" by songwriter Jim Steinman, while musically it's gloriously overblown and the perfect vehicle for the late-great Meat Loaf's theatrical and impossibly powerful voice. An irrefutable rock magnum opus.

9) AC/DC – ‘Back in Black’ (1980)

Opening with one of the greatest riffs in rock history, AC/DC's title track from their blockbuster 'Back in Black' album was written in response to the death of Bon Scott. New frontman Brian Johnson was asking not to be morbid when penning the lyrics, and, duly, the track is a celebration of the rock legend. Johnson noted years later: "I just wrote what came into my head, which at the time seemed like mumbo, jumbo. 'Nine lives. Cats eyes. Abusing every one of them and running wild.' The boys got it though. They saw Bon's life in that lyric."

8) AC/DC – ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ (1977)

The seventh AC/DC song to feature in our Top 70 is the band's riff-heavy hard rock anthem 'Whole Lotta Rosie.' Written by Angus Young, Bon Scott, Malcolm Young, 'Whole Lotta Rosie' details a mind-blowing one-night stand Scott had with a Tasmanian woman called Rosie. A mainstay of AC/DC's live shows since it was released (only 'The Jack' has been performed live more), more recent performances of 'Whole Lotta Rosie' have featured a giant inflatable Rosie on the stage's backdrop.

7) Alter Bridge - ‘Blackbird’ (2007)

The only song from the 21st Century to feature in our Top 20, 'Blackbird' is the crowning glory of Alter Bridge's second studio album and arguably the highpoint of their illustrious career so far. Lyrically poignant, Myles Kennedy wrote the lyrics for 'Blackbird' about the death of his close friend Mark Morse. Kennedy said: "It's really about seeing the suffering he was going through and hoping he would find his solace soon and be free from all of that." The eight-minute track also features a colossal guitar solo from both Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti that was voted the third greatest guitar solo ever by Planet Rock listeners in 2019.

6) Led Zeppelin – ‘Kashmir’ (1975)

The towering musical behemoth that is 'Kashmir' is Led Zeppelin's second-highest polling song from their fabled back catalogue. A track so good that it has you thumbing at the thesaurus looking for suitable superlatives, it's no surprise that the surviving members of Led Zeppelin regard 'Kashmir' as one of their career zeniths. Jimmy Page said of the track: "The intensity of 'Kashmir' was such that when we had it completed, we knew there was something really hypnotic to it, we couldn't even describe such a quality…. It sounded so frightening at first."

5) Pink Floyd - ‘Comfortably Numb’ (1979)

David Gilmour's transcendental playing on Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' was voted the Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time by Planet Rock listeners in 2019, and the song itself is rightfully in the upper echelons of our Greatest Rock Songs poll at Number 5. Penned by Roger Waters and David Gilmour, 'Comfortably Numb' is one of the defining moments of their songwriting partnership, yet such was the friction between the two during the recording process that Gilmour later noted it represents "the last embers of mine and Roger's ability to work collaboratively together." Poignantly, 'Comfortably Numb' was the last song Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and the late-great Richard Wright performed together at Live Aid in 2005.

4) Lynyrd Skynyrd – ‘Free Bird’ (1973)

The only Lynyrd Skynyrd to make our Top 70, the Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins penned 'Free Bird' is the band's signature song and truly one of the finest tracks in rock history. Delivered in Van Zant's trademark southern rock drawl, the track opens with him singing "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?", hinting at a man unable to settle down. Just past the midway point, 'Free Bird' morphs into a crescendo of glorious guitar solos and frenetic instrumentation – an life-affirming aural onslaught that still sounds as fresh now as it did almost half a century ago.

3) Rainbow – ‘Stargazer’ (1976)

The standout song from Rainbow's seminal 'Rising' album, 'Stargazer' sees the inimitable, late-great Ronnie James Dio narrate the ominous story of a wizard whose attempt to fly by constructing a tower to the stars leads to the enslavement of countless people. A musically complex, powerful and majestic heavy metal tour-de-force, 'Stargazer' flaunts the imperious talents of the respective Rainbow band members, from Dio's astonishing pipes to Cozy Powell's titanic drums to Ritchie Blackmore's mercurial guitar playing. Nothing short of a masterpiece.

2) Led Zeppelin – ‘Stairway To Heaven’ (1971)

Number 2 on our Greatest Led Zeppelin Songs poll in September 2018 to mark the band's 50th anniversary, 'Stairway To Heaven' is also at No.2 in our Greatest Rock Song poll. Clocking in at just over eight minutes, every second of 'Stairway To Heaven' is iconic; from the opening, Renaissance-tinged finger-picked guitars and recorders to Jimmy Page's legendary solo and right through to Robert Plant's ultimate, plaintive "and she's buying the stairway to heaven" refrain. A true timeless classic that will be listened to in centuries to come.

1) Queen – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (1975)

Having previously finished at No.2 in our previous Greatest Rock Song poll a decade ago , Queen's timeless and ubiquitous rock epic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has climbed to Number 1 in 2022. Multi-layered and ambitious in musical scope, the Freddie Mercury penned 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has topped the charts twice in the UK and has been introduced to new generations of fans via 1992's Wayne's World and the 2018 Queen biopic of the same name, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Journey’s ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’ Video Gets Hilarious Shot-For-Shot Remake

It's already entered the annals of MTV history as one of the textbook examples of early-80s unintentional comedy, so what new way can people pay tribute to the video for Journey 's hit 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)?' That question has been answered with a shot-for-shot remake, which can be viewed above.

Everything that has made the 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) video one of our Hilariously Outdated Videos is in there -- the mullets, the black leather mini-skirt and, most of all, the air instruments. In the lower right, the original video is embedded for comparison.

The project was the brainchild of Katie King, a writer/producer living in Los Angeles. On her website , she wrote about her reasons for doing the remake. "I've been intrigued by Journey since college," she began. "When some roommates and I stumbled across Journey's 'Behind the Music' special on VH-1 and realized that Journey really had written 'the soundtrack of our lives.' The video for 'Separate Ways' is one of the best/worst of all time, and this year for my birthday I gathered together some fun and talented friends to attempt a shot-by-shot recreation. Shot in 1.5 days with a limited budget that went entirely towards wigs, jean jackets and pizza, the results were so inspiring we had to capture some of the behind the scenes magic as well. I think Steve Perry would be proud?"

King also made her own " Making of the video " clip that spliced outtakes and stills from the video shoot with bits of the VH-1 'Behind the Music' program.

One Year Later, Resident Evil 4 Remake's Viral Success Continues to Spread

  • RE4 Remake lived up to the hype, delivering a modern twist on a classic with critical and commercial success.
  • The game added DLC modes to enhance the experience, including Mercenaries, Separate Ways, and VR Mode.
  • RE4 Remake's global success includes being the fastest-selling Resident Evil title with over seven million sales.

2023 saw the release of the long-anticipated Resident Evil 4 Remake , a ground-up reimagining of the series’ most legendary entry. The title faced the seemingly impossible task of improving on the classic experience, which had transformed the survival horror genre upon its release in 2005. However, the Resident Evil 4 Remake delivered on all fronts , garnering universal critical and commercial acclaim, as it modernized the original title's groundbreaking balance of horror and B-movie action. One year later, Resident Evil 4 Remake 's viral success continues to spread, while new modes and incredible sales numbers help the title carve out a legacy all its own.

Resident Evil 4 Remake follows Leon S. Kennedy, as he searches the region of Valdelobos, Spain for the President’s Daughter, Ashley. The title exudes the B-movie splendor that made the original so successful, masterfully adapting the brutal horror and campy narrative of Leon’s journey to rescue Ashley and escape Valdelobos’ corrupted inhabitants. While the launch day release of Resident Evil 4 Remake offered plenty of reasons to replay the title’s story mode, the title wasn’t truly complete until the tail-end of 2023. Then, developer Capcom unleashed the title’s full potential, delivering fully remade versions of the originals’ most successful additions.

5 Ways Resident Evil 4 Remake Evolved Leon & Ashley's Relationship

Re4 remake's various updates improved upon perfection.

When Resident Evil 4 Remake was released , it included the base story mode, leaving fans somewhat disappointed. Over the original title’s decades-long legacy of re-releases and additions, various new modes have been released to positive reception. With each subsequent release, these modes became an essential piece of the package, making their absence felt in the remake’s original release. However, Capcom had plans few could have anticipated, as months following the launch of Resident Evil 4 Remake saw fully re-imagined versions of these modes released, each more impressive than the last.

Resident Evil 4 Remake ’s Mercenaries mode was the first to release, in April 2023, delivering a fun and flashy time trial mode for fans to compete in. However, the real surprises arrived in Q4 of 2023, when a fully revamped edition of the Ada Wong campaign, Separate Ways , was released in September, followed by the completely remade Resident Evil 4 Remake VR Mode for PSVR2 in December. Both of these DLCs managed to not only capture their original counterparts' greatest strengths but also continued the remake’s incredible accomplishment of improving upon perfection. Going into 2024, Resident Evil 4 Remake was more than just the total package, it was one of modern gaming’s most stunning achievements.

RE4 Remake Has Achieved Global Saturation

Given its remarkable critical and commercial reception, and the quality of its DLC releases, Resident Evil 4 Remake has achieved unprecedented success. 2023 saw the title become the fastest-selling entry in the entire Resident Evil franchise. One year following its release, its legacy continues to grow, as the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake Gold Edition collects the title’s full experience for even more players to enjoy. Additionally, Capcom recently announced that Resident Evil 4 Remake achieved an incredible milestone , with over seven million sales cementing the title’s impressive legacy in a year of commercial juggernauts.

Resident Evil 4 Remake has redefined the modern gaming landscape, particularly its approach to remakes, just as the original did in 2005. With Capcom’s confirmation that the title is in its final version, all eyes move towards the series’ future. Following the success of RE4 Remake , fans are hoping that its excellence will carry forward into reimaginings of the series’ more maligned entries. Rumors suggest that Resident Evil 5 will be the next in the remake series , and, thanks to Resident Evil 4 Remake , the landscape couldn’t be better for it to prove the original’s doubters wrong.
