Folds Up to Less Than 10"

Traditional walkers with big wheels tend to be bulky and not travel-friendly. The Voyager was made to be a narrow walker, taking up less than 10" when collapsed. Not only is it compact, but it's also easy to fold quickly. Simply pull up on the seat's handle for quick and effortless storage. This makes it easy to move the handicap walker with seat in tight spaces where it won't fit when unfolded.

Customer Reviews

Very sturdy to use

I’ve had this walker for a few weeks and thoroughly enjoy taking walks with it. The seat is comfortable and the pouch holds the few thing I bring. I haven’t yet completely solved the problem of the handles making my hands sweat. I’ve tried laying my hands on the handles but not wrapping my fingers around them. The only time I wrap my fingers around them is when I’m using the brake or making a turn. Even with this happening, it hasn’t stopped me from enjoying my walks.

Hey Beverly,

Thank you for your review of the ProBasics Voyager Euro Walker with Seat. We're delighted to hear that you have been thoroughly enjoying your walks with the walker. It's great to know that the seat is comfortable and the pouch holds your essentials.

We understand your concern about the handles making your hands sweat. While your workaround of laying your hands on the handles without wrapping your fingers around them is a creative approach, we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We appreciate your feedback, and we'll take it into consideration as we continue to improve our products.

We're glad to hear that the issue hasn't stopped you from enjoying your walks. If you have any further questions or need assistance in the future, please feel free to reach out. We're here to help!

Thank you for choosing ProBasics, and we appreciate your support.

Besides bucking the back rest does not fit properly. Its light and beautiful but i would not buy this again. I like a smoother ride

Let customers speak for us.

Ive just started using this Tens unit and I do approve of the things it does/will do. I have a bad shoulder and if I use it every day for 35 minutes, it seems to settle my pain. I sometimes don't need it, but when I do I know it will bring comfort .

The TENS 7000 has been helping me so much with my chronic shoulder pain and frozen shoulder. Whenever I start to feel sore I put it on and it seems to help relax the area enough that I can do my exercises. And I don't have to worry about replacing batteries, I just plug it in each night. Thank you so much!

Appreciate the info on line on use and positioning of the electrodes. Pretty easy to set up and I'm finding the battery usage is not as bad as I've seen in online reviews.

I thought the patches were in the case. I need more patches.

INTRODUCING THE FROG WALKER

Mobility Walker With Seat

The Voyar FROG assistive walker is a more effective gait training and support solution for users with mobility impairments.

the voyager walker

CLINICAL NEEDS

How our Therapeutic Walker Supports Individuals with Mobility Impairments

The solution.

the voyager walker

FROG addresses fatigue and eliminates the need for frequent assisted transfers when using conventional gait trainers by incorporating a resting seat.

the voyager walker

An integrated, patented weight-compensation mechanism enables easy and autonomous transition from sitting to standing and vice versa.

the voyager walker

When seated, the compensation mechanism exercises a counter force against the weight of the user, assisting in standing up.

the voyager walker

The mechanism provides space for walking and easy access for the next deployment, stabilizing the user in transition from sitting to standing.

Product Features

The FROG sports many innovative features which enhance therapy and enable more autonomy and the associated social development in activities of daily life through practical and flexible support functions.

the voyager walker

Control of caster wheels

Caster wheels are independently adjustable in three steps for each swivelling direction and separately for each of the casters; providing the therapist maximum control to balance stability in gait with manoeuvrability. Constraints can be released progressively as the training progresses.

the voyager walker

Paediatric walker with seat

The weight compensation mechanism is adjustable to suit the body weight of the child in to provide just the right lift. Folding of the seat is always easy: the force required for folding is independent from the lift force selected. The folding seat can be deployed by the child without assistance.

the voyager walker

Body size adjustment

Frog can be adjusted to suit a large variety of body sizes and postures. It can grow with the child, from baby to adolescent. Height and width of the frame can be increased in three steps. Seat and armrest height as well as width can be adjusted in incremental steps via quick locks. Handles can be pivoted to suit different postures.

the voyager walker

Anti-reverse

Anti-reverse locks at the rear wheels preventing involuntary backward movement with the danger of falls. This mechanism can be toggled on or off and ensures confident movement and safety.

the voyager walker

Frog can be easily folded to a flat format in order to fit into the trunk of compact cars and reduced storage space.

Mobility is a large part of quality of life, and plays a pivotal role in social development and psychological function of the child. Mobility also improves the general cardiovascular and bone health. Physical impairment is a real problem to the patient and the family. But also on a societal level, there are significant direct and indirect economic costs associated with it. Unfortunately, for most conditions there is currently no cure and supportive treatments are limited to non-invasive therapies such as physiotherapies, orthotics, postural management and medications. Children who are ambulant (up to 80% of all CP children) commonly use anterior and posterior posture walkers to improve their walking. These paediatric walkers include gait trainers that provide these children with trunk and pelvic support. There is good evidence that such gait trainers help the users improve their motor function and can also be used as part of their therapy to develop independent walking. Recent systematic review of the use of gait trainers in a total of 182 children demonstrated descriptive evidence of positive motor outcomes, especially in improving their stepping as well as walking distance.

There is also evidence that gait trainers may have a positive impact on body structure and function, activity and participation outcomes including increased levels of overall independence, mobility, transfers and self-care abilities. It is recommended that the gait trainers should be introduced early around 9 to 12 months of age when upright positioning and mobility can potentially impact the children’s motor, sensory, visual and social development. One of the practical challenges in engaging these children in physiotherapy and gait training with a walker is that they tire easily. It has been shown that children and adolescents with CP have elevated energy expenditure when standing. During therapy, children with CP need to take frequent breaks to rest. To do so, they have to leave their walker to sit down. Furthermore, getting up from rest and entering the walker again is also very tiring and requires assistance due to their baseline muscular weakness and body posture. The resting periods disrupt training and cumulatively lead to further patient exhaustion and reduced intervention time. The problem of fatigue and need for frequent transfers to rest also reduces the effectiveness of gait trainers as an assistive device to enhance the children’s mobility and participation in daily activities.

THE DAY OF THE SPACE VOYAGER

by James Parker Walker ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 20, 2024

Surreal and hallucinatory spiritual SF that some readers may find baffling.

In Walker’s SF/fantasy novel, a 102-year-old recluse in the late 21st century is rejuvenated during a visit from a space alien and then embarks on a time/space odyssey.

In late 21st-century rural Colorado, in an America that’s apparently become a police state, elderly narrator Will Henry lives alone in the forest with his faithful dog. He tells his mystery audience (named Theophilus) how he’d just typed out a final manuscript and looked forward to little but death when an extraordinary event occurred: A “wagon wheel”spacecraft descended containing a humanoid creature with translucent skin and ribbons of subcutaneous color. Contact with the entity restores Henry to his bloom of youth, but it also brings police, so Will, his dog, and the extraterrestrial flee as the cabin is riddled with gunfire. Will learns that his visitor, named Axzum, comes from a breathtaking world called Payraydayzay “boasting every imaginable hue, prompting the onlooker to explore every mountain, canyon, and crevasse.” It once orbited between Mars and Jupiter until a galactic menace corrupted its core and shattered it into pieces, some of which pelted archaic Earth (aka Gaieos), causing mass extinctions. More revelations come after Will discovers that he’s originally of Payraydayzay descent (before several reincarnations); his actual name is Oakruum, and he’s Axzum’s brother. In the wagon-wheel ship, Will zooms to Iowa for a reunion with his long-lost childhood sweetheart, Madeline, who, in truth, is Juulez—another survivor of the Payraydayzay diaspora. Axzum takes them along with him on a time/space distorting mission to recover his own missing mate and daughter. Soon, Will is left to deal with recovered memories, helpful orbs, and an Ethiopian “angel,” as well as sundry other figures and stranded wagon-wheel ships during his journey to find his cosmic selfhood.

Walker’s book is SF as mysticism, tilting heavily toward a Hindu-Buddhism philosophy (“Atman is Brahman” becomes a refrain) as it argues that everything in the outward world is an illusion and that the Universe, including God, lies within every living being. Wickedness deceives people into not knowing one’s true nature, and religion is called out as a particularly detrimental force, due to its false threats of devils and demons. However, the tale does feature a clear antagonist: a rapacious, anti-everything entity called the Nuul, whose hordes tore Payraydayzay apart at the seams. Readers may or may not absorb how it all turns out in the end, due to the narrative’s mind-addling journeys through portals, shape-shifts, and orb-hunting in extreme environments. However, Walker effectively makes scattered attempts to bring the careening voyage down to Earth at times with references to real-life people and things, such as Galileo Galilei, Vincent Van Gogh, and the historic and untranslatable museum curio called the Voynich Manuscript, which, in this story, was written in Payraydayzay. Readers who are familiar with David Lindsay’s classic of SF eschatology, A Voyage to Arcturus  (1920), may know what to expect when they punch a ticket for the Payraydayzay express.

New York Times Bestseller

by Max Brooks ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 16, 2020

A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.

Are we not men? We are—well, ask Bigfoot, as Brooks does in this delightful yarn, following on his bestseller World War Z (2006).

A zombie apocalypse is one thing. A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over narration for Brooks’ latest puts it, when Mount Rainier popped its cork, “it was the psychological aspect, the hyperbole-fueled hysteria that had ended up killing the most people.” Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. Brooks places the epicenter of the Bigfoot war in a high-tech hideaway populated by the kind of people you might find in a Jurassic Park franchise: the schmo who doesn’t know how to do much of anything but tries anyway, the well-intentioned bleeding heart, the know-it-all intellectual who turns out to know the wrong things, the immigrant with a tough backstory and an instinct for survival. Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker. Taking up our resources, our time to care for you.” Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U.S. Geological Survey, leading to “immediate suspension of the National Volcano Early Warning System,” and there’s always someone around looking to monetize the natural disaster and the sasquatch-y onslaught that follows. Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs.” Grossness aside, it puts you right there on the scene.

FOURTH WING

FOURTH WING

From the empyrean series , vol. 1.

by Rebecca Yarros ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 2, 2023

Read this for the action-packed plot, not character development or worldbuilding.

On the orders of her mother, a woman goes to dragon-riding school.

Even though her mother is a general in Navarre’s army, 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail was raised by her father to follow his path as a scribe. After his death, though, Violet's mother shocks her by forcing her to enter the elite and deadly dragon rider academy at Basgiath War College. Most students die at the War College: during training sessions, at the hands of their classmates, or by the very dragons they hope to one day be paired with. From Day One, Violet is targeted by her classmates, some because they hate her mother, others because they think she’s too physically frail to succeed. She must survive a daily gauntlet of physical challenges and the deadly attacks of classmates, which she does with the help of secret knowledge handed down by her two older siblings, who'd been students there before her. Violet is at the mercy of the plot rather than being in charge of it, hurtling through one obstacle after another. As a result, the story is action-packed and fast-paced, but Violet is a strange mix of pure competence and total passivity, always managing to come out on the winning side. The book is categorized as romantasy, with Violet pulled between the comforting love she feels from her childhood best friend, Dain Aetos, and the incendiary attraction she feels for family enemy Xaden Riorson. However, the way Dain constantly undermines Violet's abilities and his lack of character development make this an unconvincing storyline. The plots and subplots aren’t well-integrated, with the first half purely focused on Violet’s training, followed by a brief detour for romance, and then a final focus on outside threats.

Review: The Day of the Space Voyager by James Parker Walker

The Day of the Space Voyager by James Parker Walker

A reluctant hero’s journey of self-discovery like no other, The Day of the Space Voyager by James Parker Walker is a gripping tale of aliens, angels, and ancient protectors of the stars.

When a solitary thinker, William Henry, encounters an interstellar traveler named Axzum one cold Colorado night, he is launched on an incredible journey into the unknown, even as he continues to explore the depths of his own consciousness and identity. Learning more about his connection to Axzum and his mysterious home planet, Will must come to terms with the truth of his eons-long mission.

Sent as a refugee from a dying planet millions of years ago, Will/Oakruum rediscovers his mystical purpose, and a renewed desire to connect with others like him. However, that might require a trip to Geuld, the unknown gateway planet at the far edge of the solar system. The unlikely group of survivors from Payraydayzay comes together to share in their uniquely painful grief, and join together to defend against the Nuul – a shadowy, all-consuming manifestation of hopelessness and dread. Negating one’s ability to know and be known, the Nuul is the ultimate evil, an ancient malice, but one that can be combatted with meditation, self-knowing, and true interconnectedness with others.

Whether stealing a centuries-old journal from Yale University, uncovering frozen aliens on space walks, or being swallowed by the simulation of a living memory, this heady sci-fi plot is unpredictable and wildly creative – genre-bending writing of the first order. Underwritten with a consistent pulse of philosophy and wonder, the book is reminiscent of other sci-fi masterpieces with a focus on human nature, including Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The writing style is balanced beautifully between the academic and poetic, where metaphors and musing become indistinguishable from exposition and internal monologue.

The storyline explores a range of timeless themes, such as the pain of losing one’s home, isolation from purpose, and the mysteries of faith, mortality, and the universe. Astrophysics, space, time, gravity, and the unknowable elements of the cosmos are discussed right alongside magic, miracles, rebirth, and infinite paradoxes, blurring the lines of science and human understanding. There are many moments that feel laden with deeper meaning, or at least relevant commentary on humanity’s current relationship with its home planet: “ This world we’re on works to scramble, tangle and confuse us. Before long, we forget who we are all together and cling to fables and mythology for enlightenment. We are part of the world of our birth, not just residents of it. ”

On a technical level, the prose is remarkably tight and tidy, and the language is surprisingly simple, despite the complex subject matter and mind-bending concepts. The accessibility of the language and storyline is essential within such a high-tech and high-minded plot, and the writing never demands too much suspension of disbelief, gradually easing readers into its immersive premise.

With an ever-developing cast, fascinating future tech, and timeless existential quandaries, this imaginative retelling of Earth’s history is a manifesto of shared consciousness, and a thrilling stellar adventure.

The Day of the Space Voyager Kindle Edition

Combining contemplative spirituality, mysticism, and cosmic wonder into an inspiring tale of self-discovery, The Day of the Space Voyager is both a fantastic adventure and a provocative parable for the 21st century.

James Parker Walker's novel shares the metaphysical wanderings of an old hermit who learns that everything he has ever known is false. His quest for the truth takes him to places he never imagined, experienced on all levels of awareness. The deeper his true identity is revealed, the more he discovers the nature of being and the meaning of life.

This intimate journey offers the reader new ways of thinking about the power of being and the importance of belonging—to those we love, to the universe, and to ourselves.

On tonight’s episode of Walker , things heated up between the Walker family after Stella ran away, and the search for the Jackal continued.

Let’s dive in!

Stella’s Escape

The episode opens with a montage of Stella driving, as flashbacks of everything leading up to the events of her fleeing run through her head.

Back at the ranch, Liam, Augie, and Geri are discussing everything — Liam and Augie arguing while Geri is trying to be the mediator. Bonham and Abeline come over after hearing the commotion, and Augie tells them what happened. Bonham tells Geri to call Cordell, and Liam tells her to keep it vague. Cordell answers, but he’s in the motel room investigating the Jackal. He tells her that there’s a gazebo he thinks she could be at, so he’ll stop by there and check it out. He also tells her to call Larry to see if they can help track her down.

Larry, Trey, and the Rangers arrive at the Walker ranch, and Larry asks to look at Stella’s browsing history while they also check red light cameras. He says he’s going to send Cassie out to help Cordi. Abeline is quiet, zoned out, and tells Larry thank you.

Liam angrily slams dishes in the kitchen and Geri walks in; Liam vents about Stella and how she should have talked to him. Geri tells Liam the best thing he can do is start forgiving her because she’s going to need a lot of forgiveness once this is done. Geri takes over the dishes from Liam and tells him to go take out his anger chopping wood or something.

The Search for the Necklace

Stella arrives at an abandoned field, and Joanna pulls up in a car — with her henchman and Sadie, who they kidnapped. Joanna says she wants the necklace for Sadie, and Stella tries to bargain with her with the letter that Hoyt had. Joanna doesn’t agree, and Stella burns the letter. Stella agrees to take Joanna to where the necklace is and also tells Sadie that Joanna is her grandmother.

On the way to the necklace, Sadie talks to Joanna about them being family and her kidnapping her. Joanna tells her she’s a stranger. Stella tries to give Joanna directions, but Joanna says she’s known for the last ten minutes where they were going — Hoyt’s childhood home.

They enter the old house and start tearing it apart looking for the necklace. Stella and Sadie get a second alone, and Stella tells Sadie that she doesn’t have a plan yet, but she will and to look for a signal.

Sadie ends up in Hoyt’s old room and finds a picture of him as a child. Joanna comes in and tells her that she’s the reason that all of this is happening. Sadie did a DNA test and it tipped her off, and she thought he would have left it for her. Sadie says she thought she was in jail, and that she’s been looking for this necklace for a long time — that the cops took the necklace from her and found out it was worth $800,000. Joanna says no one in the world is really looking out for you, and the best thing she ever did for Hoyt was leaving. Sadie says she talked to Abby Walker a lot about Hoyt, and says the Walkers were his family.

Abeline and Joanna

Abeline is distracted, and Bonham asks her what’s going on — she says she actually wrote a letter to Joanna once Hoyt passed. She never responded. Abeline says she better not hurt Stella and that if she does, the Rangers better find her first because she’ll kill her if she does. Trey interrupts that he’s got something, and they were able to track Stella’s car and Geri puts the pieces together of where she is. Abby, however, goes missing and they hear the car take off — she knows where the house is and is going after Joanna.

Joanna threatens them again, and Stella tells her she thinks it’s in the fireplace. They find the bag that it was in behind a brick, but it’s empty. Joanna’s henchman turns on her realizing he won’t get paid now and right before he tries to shoot Joanna, Stella yells “SIGNAL” at Sadie and the girls take him down. Joanna goes to run and opens the front door, only to be met by the barrel of a shotgun and Abeline Walker behind it.

The Rangers arrive, and they handcuff Joanna and her henchman. Stella runs over to Liam and gives him a hug and apologizes, and Liam says he forgives her. The Rangers sit Joanna on the porch, and Abeline asks for a minute alone with her. Abeline talks to Joanna about Hoyt, and that watching him grow up was one of the greatest blessings of her life. She says she feels nothing but pity for her because she couldn’t see the treasure she had in Hoyt. Abeline tells her it didn’t have to end this way, and Joanna says she always knew it would end this way.

Cassie and Luna

Cassie and Luna are getting ready to go meet a friend of his, Ed. At the Side Step, a band plays as Cassie, and Luna meet up with Luna’s friend. Right off the bat, he’s negative about The Side Step, as well as everything Austin — and Luna tells him he’s moving to Austin. Cassie goes to take a call from Larry, and as she comes back, Luna says he’s moving here because he loves Cassie. She hears it but doesn’t say anything as she and Luna leave to go meet Cordell.

As they arrive at the lake, Luna apologizes for his friend and asks if Cassie heard what he said, and she tells him she did. He apologizes for her hearing it that way, and he tells her he loves her again.

The Necklace Revealed

Geri, Sadie, and Stella are sitting around the back of an ambulance, and Stella apologizes to both of them. Stella also shows them something — she has the necklace. She knew where it was the whole time, so she drove over before meeting with Joanna and grabbed it. There was also a note with the necklace, and she gives it to Geri. Geri, however, gives it to Sadie and says it belongs with her as Hoyt’s daughter. The note says it was “given to one of our ancestors by a dear friend” ( fun note: meaning Abigail Walker in Walker: Independence, who wore the necklace all through the series, gave it to the Hoyt Rawlins in Independence. ), but he wanted the necklace to stay in his family. Geri reiterates that Sadie should have it, and Sadie says it should actually go back to the museum.

the voyager walker

Where’s Cordell?

Cassie and Luna arrive, and Larry asks where Cordi is. Cassie said she never met up with him at the lake, they tried to call but he didn’t pick up. Trey said he texted him earlier but he never responded.

It cuts to Cordi lying in his bed at home, and waking up. He goes down to the kitchen and sees August and Stella. However, they mention Emily, and it flashes to Cordi being tied up and being fed a spoonful of blended food. He’s also injected with poison in his neck. It goes back to Cordi’s dream/hallucination, and he says, “Emily?” before the episode ends. Cordi has been taken by the Jackal.

Walker airs Wednesday nights on The CW. You can catch up the next day on the CW app.

Things are finally looking up for the Voyager 1 interstellar spacecraft

Two of the four science instruments aboard the Voyager 1 spacecraft are now returning usable data after months of transmitting only gibberish, NASA scientists have announced.

Voyager 1

I was once sitting with my father while Googling how far away various things in the solar system are from Earth. He was looking for exact numbers, and very obviously grew more invested with each new figure I shouted out. I was thrilled. The moon? On average, 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) away. The James Webb Space Telescope ? Bump that up to about a million miles (1,609,344 km) away. The sun? 93 million miles (149,668,992 km) away.  Neptune ? 2.8  billion  miles (4.5 billion km) away. "Well, wait until you hear about Voyager 1," I eventually said, assuming he was aware of what was coming. He was not.

"NASA's  Voyager 1  interstellar spacecraft actually isn't even in the solar system anymore," I announced. "Nope, it's more than 15 billion miles (24 billion km)  away from us  — and it's getting even farther as we speak." I can't quite remember his response, but I do indeed recall an expression of sheer disbelief. There were immediate inquiries about how that's even physically possible. There were bewildered laughs, different ways of saying "wow," and mostly, there was a contagious sense of awe. And just like that, a new Voyager 1 fan was born.

It is easy to see why Voyager 1 is among the most beloved robotic space explorers we have — and it is thus easy to understand why so many people felt a pang to their hearts several months ago, when Voyager 1 stopped talking to us.

Related:  After months of sending gibberish to NASA, Voyager 1 is finally making sense again

For reasons unknown at the time, this spacecraft began sending back gibberish in place of the neatly organized and data-rich 0's and 1's it had been providing since its  launch in 1977 . It was this classic computer language which allowed Voyager 1 to converse with its creators while earning the title of "farthest human made object." It's how the spacecraft relayed vital insight that led to the discovery of new Jovian moons and, thanks to this sort of binary podcast, scientists incredibly identified a new ring of Saturn and created the solar system's first and only "family portrait." This code, in essence, is crucial to Voyager 1's very being.

Plus, to make matters worse, the issue behind the glitch turned out to be associated with the craft's Flight Data System, which is literally the system that transmits information about Voyager 1's health so scientists can correct any issues that arise. Issues like this one. Furthermore, because of the spacecraft's immense distance from its operators on Earth, it takes about 22.5 hours for a transmission to reach the spacecraft, and then 22.5 hours to receive a transmission back. Alas, things weren't looking good for a while — for about five months, to be precise.

But then, on April 20, Voyager 1  finally phoned home  with legible 0's and legible 1's.

Earth as a

"The team had gathered early on a weekend morning to see whether telemetry would return," Bob Rasmussen, a member of the Voyager flight team, told Space.com. "It was nice to have everyone assembled in one place like this to share in the moment of learning that our efforts had been successful. Our cheer was both for the intrepid spacecraft and for the comradery that enabled its recovery."

And  then,  on May 22 , Voyager scientists released the welcome announcement that the spacecraft has successfully resumed returning science data from two of its four instruments, the plasma wave subsystem and magnetometer instrument. They're now working on getting the other two, the cosmic ray subsystem and low energy charged particle instrument, back online as well. Though there technically are six other instruments onboard Voyager, those had been out of commission for some time.

The comeback

Rasmussen was actually a member of the Voyager team in the 1970s, having worked on the project as a computer engineer before leaving for other missions including  Cassini , which launched the spacecraft that taught us almost everything we currently know about Saturn. In 2022, however, he returned to Voyager because of a separate dilemma with the mission — and has remained on the team ever since.

"There are many of the original people who were there when Voyager launched, or even before, who were part of both the flight team and the science team," Linda Spilker, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory , who also worked on the Voyager mission, told Space.com in the This Week from Space podcast on the TWiT network. "It's a real tribute to Voyager — the longevity not only of the spacecraft, but of the people on the team."

To get Voyager 1 back online, in rather cinematic fashion, the team devised a complex workaround that prompted the FDS to send a copy of its memory back to Earth. Within that memory readout, operators managed to discover the crux of the problem — a corrupted code spanning a single chip — which was then remedied through another (honestly,  super interesting ) process to modify the code. On the day Voyager 1 finally spoke again, "you could have heard a pin drop in the room," Spilker said. "It was very silent. Everybody's looking at the screen, waiting and watching."

The rocket that launched Voyager 1 in 1977.

Of course, Spilker also brought in some peanuts for the team to munch on — but not just any peanuts. Lucky peanuts.

It's a longstanding tradition at JPL to have a peanut feast before major mission events like launches, milestones and, well, the possible resurrection of Voyager 1. It  began  in the 1960s, when the agency was trying to launch the Ranger 7 mission that was meant to take pictures of and collect data about the moon's surface. Rangers 1 through 6 had all failed, so Ranger 7 was a big deal. As such, the mission's trajectory engineer, Dick Wallace, brought lots of peanuts for the team to nibble on and relax. Sure enough, Ranger 7 was a success and, as Wallace once said, "the rest is history."

Voyager 1 needed some of those positive snacky vibes.

"It'd been five months since we'd had any information," Spilker explained. So, in this room of silence besides peanut-eating-noises, Voyager 1 operators sat at their respective system screens, waiting.

"All of a sudden it started to populate — the data," Spilker said. That's when the programmers who had been staring at those screens in anticipation leapt out of their seats and began to cheer: "They were the happiest people in the room, I think, and there was just a sense of joy that we had Voyager 1 back."

flight team of voyager 1

Eventually, Rasmussen says the team was able to conclude that the failure probably occurred due to a combination of aging and radiation damage by which energetic particles in space bombarded the craft. This is also why he believes it wouldn't be terribly surprising to see a similar failure occur in the future, seeing as Voyager 1 is still roaming beyond the distant boundaries of our stellar neighborhood just like its spacecraft twin,  Voyager 2 .

To be sure, the spacecraft isn't fully fixed yet — but it's lovely to know things are finally looking up, especially with the recent news that some of its science instruments are back on track. And, at the very least, Rasmussen assures that nothing the team has learned so far has been alarming. "We're confident that we understand the problem well," he said, "and we remain optimistic about getting everything back to normal — but we also expect this won't be the last."

The trajectory of the Voyagers.

In fact, as Rasmussen explains, Voyager 1 operators first became optimistic about the situation just after the root cause of the glitch had been determined with certainty. He also emphasizes that the team's spirits were never down. "We knew from indirect evidence that we had a spacecraft that was mostly healthy," he said. "Saying goodbye was not on our minds."

"Rather," he continued, "we wanted to push toward a solution as quickly as possible so other matters on board that had been neglected for months could be addressed. We're now calmly moving toward that goal."

The future of Voyager's voyage

It can't be ignored that, over the last few months, there has been an air of anxiety and fear across the public sphere that Voyager 1 was slowly moving toward sending us its final 0 and final 1. Headlines all over the internet, one written by  myself included , have carried clear, negative weight. I think it's because even if Voyager 2 could technically carry the interstellar torch post-Voyager 1, the prospect of losing Voyager 1 felt like the prospect of losing a piece of history.

"We've crossed this boundary called the heliopause," Spilker explained of the Voyagers. "Voyager 1 crossed this boundary in 2012; Voyager 2 crossed it in 2018 — and, since that time, were the first spacecraft ever to make direct measurements of the interstellar medium." That medium basically refers to material that fills the space between stars. In this case, that's the space between other stars and our sun, which, though we don't always think of it as one, is simply another star in the universe. A drop in the cosmic ocean.

"JPL started building the two Voyager spacecraft in 1972," Spilker explained. "For context, that was only three years after we had the first human walk on the moon — and the reason we started that early is that we had this rare alignment of the planets that happens once every  176 years ." It was this alignment that could promise the spacecraft checkpoints across the solar system, including at Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Those checkpoints were important for the Voyagers in particular. Alongside planetary visits come gravity assists, and gravity assists can help fling stuff within the solar system — and, now we know, beyond.

As the first humanmade object to leave the solar system, as a relic of America's early space program, and as a testament to how robust even decades-old technology can be, Voyager 1 has carved out the kind of legacy usually reserved for remarkable things lost to time.

The

"Our scientists are eager to see what they’ve been missing," Rasmussen remarked. "Everyone on the team is self-motivated by their commitment to this unique and important project. That's where the real pressure comes from."

Still, in terms of energy, the team's approach has been clinical and determined.

— NASA's Voyager 1 sends readable message to Earth after 4 nail-biting months of gibberish

— NASA engineers discover why Voyager 1 is sending a stream of gibberish from outside our solar system

— NASA's Voyager 1 probe hasn't 'spoken' in 3 months and needs a 'miracle' to save it

"No one was ever especially excited or depressed," he said. "We're confident that we can get back to business as usual soon, but we also know that we're dealing with an aging spacecraft that is bound to have trouble again in the future. That's just a fact of life on this mission, so not worth getting worked up about."

Nonetheless, I imagine it's always a delight for Voyager 1's engineers to remember this robotic explorer occupies curious minds around the globe. (Including my dad's mind now, thanks to me and Google.)

As Rasmussen puts it: "It's wonderful to know how much the world appreciates this mission."

Voyager 1’s Revival Offers Inspiration for Everyone on Earth

Instruments may fail, but humanity’s most distant sentinel will keep exploring, and inspiring us all

Amid April’s litany of bad news—war in Gaza, protests on American campuses, an impasse in Ukraine—a little uplift came for science buffs.

NASA has reestablished touch with Voyager 1 , the most distant thing built by our species, now hurtling through interstellar space far beyond the orbit of Pluto. The extraordinarily durable spacecraft had stopped transmitting data in November, but NASA engineers managed a very clever work-around, and it is sending data again. Now more than 15 billion miles away, Voyager 1 is the farthest human object, and continues to speed away from us at approximately 38,000 miles per hour.

Like an old car that continues to run, or an uncle blessed with an uncommonly long life, the robotic spacecraft is a super ager that goes on and on—and, in doing so, has captivated space buffs everywhere.

Launched on September 5, 1977, the one-ton Voyager 1 was meant to chart the outer solar system, in particular the gas giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, and Saturn’s moon, Titan. Its twin, Voyager 2 , launched the same year, followed a different trajectory with a slightly different mission to explore the outer planets before heading to the solar system’s edge.

Those were NASA’s glory days. A few years earlier, NASA had successfully landed men on the moon—and won the space race for the U.S. NASA’s engineers were the envy of the world.

To get to Jupiter and Saturn, both Voyagers had to traverse the asteroid belt, which is full of rocks and debris orbiting the sun. They had to survive cosmic rays, intense radiation from Jupiter and other perils of space. But the two spacecraft made it without a hitch.

President Jimmy Carter held office when Voyager 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral; Elvis Presley had died just three weeks before; gas was about 60 cents a gallon; and, like now, the Middle East was in crisis, with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat trying to find peace.

Voyager 1 sent back spectacular photos of Jupiter and its giant red spot. It showed how dynamic the Jovian atmosphere was, with clouds and storms. It also took pictures of Jupiter’s moon Io, with its volcanoes, and Saturn’s moon Titan , which astronomers think has an atmosphere similar to the primordial Earth’s. The spacecraft discovered a thin ring around Jupiter and two new Jovian moons, which were named Thebe and Metis. On reaching Saturn, it discovered five new moons as well as a new ring.

And then Voyager 1 continued on its journey and sent images back from the edge of the solar system. Many of us remember the Pale Blue Dot , a haunting picture of the Earth it took on Feb 14, 1990, when it was a distance of 3.7 billion miles from the sun. The astronomer Carl Sagan wrote:

“There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

By then Voyager 1 had long outlived its planetary mission but kept faithfully calling home as it traveled beyond the solar system into the realm of the stars. By 2012 Voyager 1 had reached the heliosphere , the farthest edge of the solar system. There, it penetrated the heliopause, where the solar wind ends, stopped by particles coming from the interstellar medium, the vast space between the stars. (Astronomers know that the space between the stars is not totally empty but permeated by a rarefied gas .)

From Voyager 1, scientists learned that the heliopause is quite dynamic and first measured the magnetic field of the Milky Way beyond the solar system. And its instruments kept sending data as it traveled through the interstellar medium.

On hearing that Voyager 1 had gone dark, I had checked in with Louis Lanzerotti , a former Bell Labs planetary scientist who did the calibrations for the Voyager 1 spacecraft and was a principal investigator on many experiments. He told me that a NASA manager in the 1970s had doubted that the spacecraft’s mechanical scan platform, which pointed instruments at targets, and very thin solid state detectors, which took those edge of the solar system readings, on the spacecraft would survive. They not only survived but worked flawlessly for all this time, Lanzerotti said, providing excellent data for decades. He was overjoyed on hearing the news that Voyager 1 was still alive.

Voyager 1 instruments have power until 2025 . After that, they will shut off, one by one. But there is nothing to stop the spacecraft as it speeds away from us in the vast emptiness of space.

Thousands of years from now, maybe when the human race has left this planet, Voyager 1, the tiny little spacecraft that could, will still continue its inexorable journey to the stars.
