A Kansas mother who vanished along with her two young daughters may have been coerced to travel to a religious rehabilitation facility in Mexico , according to investigators.

Martha Unger, 23, and her daughters Madilynn Grace Unger, 2, and Haylie Faith Unger, 1, were reported missing on Friday, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation wrote in a post on Facebook .

Authorities are asking the public for help in locating the young family who were last seen at their home in rural Haskell County just before 7 p.m. on Friday.

It’s believed Unger is driving a 2015 white Ford Explorer with the Kansas plate 301RJY.

Investigators said they believe Unger and her children may have been “coerced to travel to Mexico to a religious rehabilitation facility with Corney and Elizabeth Klaasen,” a couple who are in their fifties.

It is not clear how Unger and the couple know each other or which “religious rehabilitation facility” they may be traveling to. They are believed to be driving a white and black Chevy Blazer with a Mexico license plate.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation did not provide further details, but only stated that they want to “check the welfare of Martha and her children,” and is asking anyone with information about their whereabouts to “call 911 immediately.”

Unger is described as a white female, approximately 5 foot 6 inches tall, weighing around 120 pounds. She has brown hair, and green eyes. Both of her girls have blonde hair and blue eyes.

Corney and Elizabeth are in their fifties. Corney is a male, approximately 6 foot 2 inches tall, weighing around 200 pounds. He is clean shaven and last known wearing jeans and a button-up shirt.

A description of Elizabeth Klaasen was not shared, but a picture provided showed a woman with brown hair and glasses.

If you see the subjects or vehicles, you are asked to call 911 immediately. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office at 620-675-2289.

Floodwaters officially shut down I-29 in Iowa. How long it will last and where to detour:

Iowa Department of Transportation officials expect to reopen Interstate 29 next week after rising waters caused it to shut down in both directions on the west side of the state early Wednesday morning.

The rising Missouri River caused officials to close I-29 from 25th Street at the north edge of Council Bluffs to the I-29/880 interchange near Loveland. The portion of I-680 west of I-29 in Iowa also is closed.

Officials started the process of closing I-29 around midnight and were finished by 1 a.m., said Austin Yates, a DOT traffic operations engineer.

“Right now based on the current river level forecast we’re expecting water over the roads through Monday evening,” Yates said, but added re-opening could take longer depending on how much debris and damage is left behind.

“We’re hoping once the water recedes, we’ll open in one or two days,” Yates said.

He said they've seen encouraging reports from northwest Iowa as floodwaters start to recede after rivers reached historic levels over the last several days . The Missouri River at Omaha is expected to crest at moderate flood stage Saturday, according to the National Water Prediction Service.

Travelers should follow a signed detour that will start at the I-29/880 interchange near Loveland, continue east to the I-80/880 interchange, and then southwest on I-80 to Council Bluffs. If you are driving between Iowa and Nebraska, you should use I-80. Local traffic in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area should follow the signed detour. 

Drivers are advised to not enter a water-covered roadway and not to travel around barricades or fencing.

Mom, 23, Who Disappeared with 2 Kids May Have Been 'Coerced to Travel' to Religious Facility in Mexico: Police

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said on Facebook that Martha Unger and her two daughters, ages 1 and 2, were reported missing from their home this week

A 23-year-old Kansas mother and her two young children are missing, and authorities are asking the public for help locating them.

According to a Facebook post from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) , Martha Unger and her daughters — Madilynn Grace Unger, 2, and Haylie Faith Unger, 1 — were last seen on Friday, June 28.

They were reported missing from their home in rural Haskell County before 7 p.m. local time on Friday, and the state bureau said that Martha "may have been coerced to travel to Mexico to a religious rehabilitation facility" with another couple in their 50s.

According to KBI, Martha was driving a 2015 white Ford Explorer with a Kansas tag, and may have joined Corney and Elizabeth Klaasen, who were driving a white and black Chevy Blazer with a Mexico tag.

"Investigators wish to check the welfare of Martha and her children. If you see the subjects or vehicles connected to this endangered persons advisory, call 911 immediately," KBI said in its Facebook post, asking those with any information to call the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office.

Corney is described as a 6'2 male weighing about 200 lbs. He is "clean shaven and last known to be wearing jeans and a button-up shirt," KBI said. The Unger children have blonde hair and blue eyes, while Martha is 5'6 and weighs around 120 pounds. She has brown hair and green eyes.

The Haskell County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for more information on Sunday.

According to KBI , which is the "central repository of information relating to missing and unidentified persons," 420 adults and 261 children are currently missing in the state of Kansas.

The bureau's website encourages those who notice that someone is missing to "immediately report the person as missing to your local law enforcement agency" and "limit access to the home where the person resides, their vehicle and electronic devices."

"Do not wait, especially if the missing person is vulnerable; notify police as soon as you think something is wrong," KBI said.

HASKELL COUNTY, Kan. ( KSNW ) — A Kansas mother and her two young daughters, missing since Friday, may have been coerced into traveling to “a religious rehabilitation facility” in Mexico, investigators say.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations has issued an endangered persons advisory for Martha Unger , 23, and her two daughters, Madilynn Grace Unger , 2, and Haylie Faith Unger , 1.

All three were reported missing from their Haskell County home shortly before 7 p.m. CDT on Friday.

Authorities shared the below photos of Martha, Madilynn, and Haylie.

Martha is a white female who stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs around 120 pounds. She has brown hair and green eyes, while both of her daughters have blond hair and blue eyes.

Law enforcement believes that Martha drives a 2015 white Ford Explorer bearing Kansas tag 301RJY.

“Investigators believe they may have been coerced to travel to Mexico to a religious rehabilitation facility with Corney and Elizabeth Klaasen,” the KBI said.

Corney and Elizabeth Klaasen, seen below, are in their 50s. Corney is a clean-shaven man standing approximately 6 foot 2 inches tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He was last known to be wearing jeans and a button-up shirt.

They may be driving a white and black Chevy Blazer, seen below, bearing a Mexico tag.

If you see the subjects or vehicles, you are asked to call 911 immediately. If you have any other information regarding this case, please call the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office at 620-675-2289 .

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations has issued an endangered persons advisory for Martha Unger , 23, and her two daughters, Madilynn Grace Unger , 2, and Haylie Faith Unger , 1.

All three were reported missing from their Haskell County home shortly before 7 p.m. CDT on Friday.

Authorities shared the below photos of Martha, Madilynn, and Haylie.

Martha is a white female who stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs around 120 pounds. She has brown hair and green eyes, while both of her daughters have blond hair and blue eyes.

Law enforcement believes that Martha drives a 2015 white Ford Explorer bearing Kansas tag 301RJY.

“Investigators believe they may have been coerced to travel to Mexico to a religious rehabilitation facility with Corney and Elizabeth Klaasen,” the KBI said.

Corney and Elizabeth Klaasen, seen below, are in their 50s. Corney is a clean-shaven man standing approximately 6 foot 2 inches tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He was last known to be wearing jeans and a button-up shirt.

They may be driving a white and black Chevy Blazer, seen below, bearing a Mexico tag.

If you see the subjects or vehicles, you are asked to call 911 immediately. If you have any other information regarding this case, please call the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office at 620-675-2289 .

Travel tips for a Fourth of July that's set to break records

Airports around the United States are preparing for what could be the busiest Fourth of July travel season on record. The nation's roads are no different. Traffic could reach never-before-seen volumes over the Independence Day holiday.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a press release. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever.”  

Nearly 71 million people are expected to make trips for the Independence Day travel period, AAA predicts.

Here's what to know about traveling for the holiday this week.

The TSA sets a new record and readies for another

Last week, a record-breaking 2.99 million passengers went through U.S. airports in a single day, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The agency said it's expecting a new travel record this week.

At Philadelphia International Airport, Gerardo Spero, the TSA’s federal security director for the airport, is dealing with an 8% passenger increase this year and is cautioning travelers to give themselves extra time.

“The best advice that I can offer is to get to the airport well before your ticketed departure time,” Spero said in a news release . “Now more than ever it is vital to give yourself plenty of time to park or return a rental car, check in with your airline to check bags and prepare for the security checkpoint."

Spero also said travelers can help each other out by being "efficient" in the security lines: take off shoes and belts preemptively, empty your pockets into your carry-on, and grab a bin early.

Over at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport — where travel volumes are up 5% — the TSA wants travelers to double-check their carry-on bags before they get to the airport.

“We are asking travelers to be good partners with TSA and ensure that they are prepared for the screening process," TSA Federal Security Director for Washington Greg Hawko said in a release . "Please don’t bring prohibited items in your carry-on luggage."

The busiest airport days are expected to be July 3, 7 and 8, according to flight website Hopper . The company projects Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver airports to be the ones with the most travelers.

This rise in summer air travel comes amid heightened attention on aircraft maker Boeing's quality control practices after a door plug blew out on a 737 Max jet in midair at the start of the year. Still, flying is the safest way to travel .

On the road

Nearly one in five Americans are set to drive more than 50 miles this Fourth of July travel season, according to an AAA forecast .

If you want to beat the traffic, drive early. INRIX, a transportation data provider, said driving on Monday should save travelers time. Any day after that, the best time to drive is before 10 a.m.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX , said in a statement. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal.” 

If you are preparing for a longer road trip with family and friends, AAA recommends running through this checklist: check kids' car seats, bring an emergency pack (first aid, jumper cables, snacks and water) and map the route.

At the pump, drivers can expect lower gas prices than last year with a gallon costing an average of $3.50. In 2023, gas cost $3.53 per gallon and in 2022, it cost nearly $5.

This year, the states with the most expensive gas are California ($4.80), Hawaii ($4.71), Washington ($4.21), Oregon ($4.07), Nevada ($4.04), Alaska ($3.90), Illinois ($3.88), Michigan ($3.70), Washington, D.C. ($3.66), and Indiana ($3.65).

Another cost to consider is tolls. Not all states have them, but check your route on Toll Guru to see how much change you might need on hand or how much money to have loaded on the E-ZPass.

The weather factor

High temperatures and a few thunderstorms are in the forecast for much of the country, according to AccuWeather . Both can cause travel delays.

The worst heat is expected in California.

"It's going to be downright hot across the Southwest, especially in California and the Desert Southwest where record highs will be challenged," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joseph Bauer told the website.

The Southern Plains and Southeast regions are also expected to feel the heat over the Independence Day weekend with higher than average temperatures.

High temperatures can slow down travel. When temperatures get too high, railway tracks can start to bend — forcing trains to slow down or stop completely. And planes may face weight restrictions during severe heat.

Traveling during the morning or evening can help offset the risk of heat-related delays.

While much of the country will face high temperatures on the Fourth of July, the Northern Plains, Midwest and portions of the Northeast may see thunderstorms, according to AccuWeather.

Flight delays and cancellations

As a rule, airlines are required to offer travelers a refund or book them another flight if they cancel a passenger's flight. The rules surrounding flight delays are more complicated.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end adorably hyped up Taylor Swift as they left her Dublin Eras Tour performance together Sunday night after her third show.

As the couple made their way through Aviva Stadium, Kelce jogged a short distance in front of her to pause and direct his arms in her direction to have the audience to shriek and applaud even louder than they already were, according to footage posted on social media.

The “Ready for It” singer, 34, soaked up the moment before skipping to catch up and link arms with her beau.

A mom from rural Kansas and her two young daughters suddenly vanished over the weekend — and investigators believe they may have been forced to travel to a religious rehabilitation facility in Mexico.

Martha Unger, 23, and her daughters Madilynn Grace Unger, 2, and Haylie Faith Unger, 1, were reported missing from their home in rural Haskell County just before 7 p.m. Friday, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation wrote on Facebook.

Authorities say the young family may have been forcibly taken out of the country by a couple in their fifties.

“Investigators believe they may have been coerced to travel to Mexico to a religious rehabilitation facility with Corney and Elizabeth Klaasen,” the KBI said in a post that included a picture of the older couple.

Authorities are asking the public for help locating the missing family.

The Klassens are believed to be driving a white and black Chevy Blazer with a Mexico tag. Corney is described as a male standing approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He is clean-shaven and was last seen wearing jeans and a button-up shirt.

While authorities did not share a description of Elizabeth Klaasen, a photograph provided of the couple shows they are both white with brown hair and glasses.

According to police, the missing mom is driving a 2015 white Ford Explorer with a Kansas license plate reading “301RJY.”

She is described as a young, white woman standing approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds.

Martha has brown hair and green eyes while both of her daughters have blonde hair and blue eyes, police said.

Police ask the public to call 911 immediately if they see missing family, suspects or their vehicles.
