Favorites stops won’t show scheduled times and can’t see any stops near location

Ever since upgrading my iPhone from iOS 16 to 17, using the app became more of a pain in the *#%<! Before upgrading, the favorite page would should my favorite stop (and it’s headed direction) its scheduled time, which now showing me —:—, forcing me to actually go an extra step and look at the actual train I want to look at time, which renders the favorite page useless at this point. With the stops near my location or where I am looking at, I would be able to look at the closest stops near me and also go look around to see the other stops or even pinpoint where I want to go to/start the journey, now I can’t see other stops other than my location, and if I want to look at nearby stops, I have to zoom out and press the location button, but it doesn’t always show what I wanted to see, and only show stops in the area my screen is in, for example, I’m at the CBD, then I zoomed to see Coburg, I would see the stops around the edges of the screen of the location I am currently viewing, very annoying. I tried calling PT on the phone, they told me to go to Southern X Station, then when I did, they said they couldn’t do much and told me to send an email, very frustrating, please fix this as not only me, but many others on iOS 17 most likely experiencing the same issue!

They tried fixing something that wasn’t broken

The PTV app use to be great! It use to be simple and efficient, telling you the closest options and when they come. It was simple and useful and had few issues to speak of. Use to. Now it’s clunky, unnecessarily complicated and has lost a lot to its use. It use to be that on the front page you had the stops you favourited and stops a 5 minute walk away from you at that moment. Then they removed that amazing feature and now it’s only the favourited stops you can see. You needlessly have to go through a menu and map to see the time table of the bus stop your already at, and how far away the bus actually is. And there is also the issue of many lines, routes and stops not showing up at all. My local bus route is only showing in one direction now and the bus interchange at a train station I regularly stop at is in the wrong spot, ruining the already sub par journey planner. It’s now easier to go and take a photo of the timetable at the bus stop and trust that more than this impossible app. It wasn’t broken, why did you have to brake it.

The iOS myki top up system is soooo bad

Let me break down on how tedious it is to top up your myki from an iPhone. First you have to sign up or log in to the app which isn’t too big of a deal. Although I resent the fact that you can’t stay logged in for however long you want as the app will log you out after 30 days. Then you have to take off your phone case if you have one which most people do. Then take out your myki card and payment card from your wallet. And then the most frustrating part. After selecting “top up” the app will ask you to scan your myki but the scanning is soooooo inconsistent and it typically takes 10+ tries to get a “correct” scan. After that you input your card details and then what’s next? Yup even more inconsistent and frustrating failed scans. I don’t even know which card position is optimal for scanning and the fact that you need to take off your case is just extra tedious. At minimum please make it easier to scan our myki’s on ios or remove the scanning process altogether and find a different more reliable method. I don’t know how this much needed and long waited feature even made it pass testing to be honest. Especially considering that most of us use this feature on the tram when we realise our myki is running low. Please fix soon.

Getting Around Melbourne: A Guide to Public Transportation

ptv journey travel

Don’t underestimate the size of Melbourne, Australia. Travelers may only stick to Central Business District and its surrounding neighborhoods—but the city extends so much further than that, stretching around Port Phillip Bay for 3,857-square miles.

Melbourne is kind of like New York City , in a geographical sense, because a lot of Melburnians live in the outer suburbs and travel into the city for work. The daily commute isn’t ideal by car, so people in the city opt to use the Public Transport Victoria train, tram, and bus system instead. Sixteen regular service train lines run north, south, east, and west into and out of the city. It’s an impressive and efficient system for such a big city.

Here’s what you should know about getting around Melbourne.

How to Ride the Metro Melbourne Train Lines

Most people who use public transportation in Melbourne hop on the train. There are 16 Metro train lines that jut out of the city center and into the outer suburbs. The two main stations are Flinders Street and Southern Cross. Riding the train is a convenient alternative to driving, although a train ride could take just as long (if not longer) to get you where you want to go due to frequent stops.

  • Passes: First, you’ll need to buy a myki card for AU$6. It gets you onto trains, trams, and buses throughout Melbourne and regional parts of Victoria. You can purchase one at 7-Eleven stores, a ticket booth at a premium train station, or on myki machines. Next, load the card with money to get from one stop to the next. You can do this at the ticket booth or at the myki machine.
  • Fares: The lowest amount of money you can add to your myki card is AU$10. That will get you two rides as the default fare for the train is $4.50 one way. Children, seniors, and students are eligible for discounted tickets. However, keep in mind that the price for each train ride is different, depending on how far you travel and when you travel. A smart thing to do if you’re visiting for a week is to buy a seven-day myki pass for AU$44. This will save you from continually topping up your card. You can check fares using the myki fare calculator .
  • How to Ride: Once you’ve purchased and loaded a myki pass, you must tap your card onto the center of the reader as you enter the railway platform. When you get off at your desired stop, simply tap off the same way you tapped on. Metro police conduct random checks on every train to see if passengers paid for their ride. If you don’t tap on before entering the platform and an officer catches you, it could result in a hefty fine.
  • Hours of Operation: The train lines operate from 5 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Thursday. The night network runs Friday through Sunday, with trains operating every hour after 12 a.m.
  • Service Changes: It’s typical for the Metro train to have periodic service changes. Delays may happen due to construction on the tracks, public events, or disorderly conduct by passengers. In the event of a service change, there will be announcements made throughout the station and written on the monitors. Sometimes, buses replace trains between specific stops, but there is always clear signage to help you navigate your way. You can check to see if your train line is running on time using the Public Transport Victoria journey planner .
  • Transfers: Transfers are relatively easy to complete when using the Metro train. You can hop off one train and onto another without re-tapping your myki card. If you get confused about a transfer, ask a Metro train station employee (you’ll spot them in neon orange jumpers). They’re usually on the platforms during hours of operation to help passengers with their journey.
  • Accessibility: PTV train stations are accessible to people with disabilities. Ramps, designated seating, and a combination of audio and visual announcements are available at larger stops. If you have hearing difficulties, you can use the National Relay Service . For more information about accessibility and mobility aid specifications, check out the Public Transport Victoria website .

You can use the journey planner on the PTV website or app to plan your route and find out real-time departure and arrival information.

Riding the Melbourne Metropolitan Bus Network

The public buses in Melbourne are another standard mode of transportation. There are 346 routes within Melbourne and regional Victoria, so it covers more than the train. You can get to shopping centers, hospitals, sporting venues, and other Melbourne attractions via bus. This map shows the different bus routes within Melbourne. You can use the Public Transport Victoria journey planner to help you find the specific stop you’re looking for.

The public bus takes the myki card as a bus pass, so make sure it’s loaded with money before you get on the bus. Fares are the same as the train. Note that riding the bus will take significantly longer than the train. Traffic, stop lights, and stops will add an extra 10–20 minutes to your journey.

Airport-Specific Shuttles

Melbourne has a fast, frequent, and cheap airport shuttle called the SkyBus . It’s a big red bus with WiFi onboard and plenty of seating. From Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, there are six SkyBus services: Melbourne City Express, Southbank Docklands Express, St Kilda Express, Peninsula Express, Western Express, and Airport Bus Eastside. The Melbourne City Express bus, for instance, departs every 10 minutes and transfers passengers directly from the airport to Southern Cross Station (and vice versa). It takes about 30–40 minutes and costs AU$19.75 one way.

Melbourne city trams are convenient for traveling to a specific destination within the city and the surrounding neighborhoods. The best part? It’s free within Melbourne CBD . Outside of this free tram zone, the tram takes the myki card, with fares the same as the train. Keep in mind that you cannot purchase a myki card on a tram or at a tram stop.

Use the Metropolitan tram network map to help you get to where you want to go. Locate the area where you want to go, then check the route number and destination on the front of the tram.

Taking the ferry in Melbourne is a great way to get on the water and travel across the peninsula. From Melbourne CBD, you can take a one-hour cruise to Williamstown, an outer suburb known for being the city's first seaport. It costs AU$24 one way and departs at various times, depending on the season. There’s also a 90-minute cruise from the city to Portarlington , a historic little town on the Bellarine Peninsula. This costs AU$16 for an adult one-way ticket.

Melbourne sits along the Yarra River, where you can hop on a water taxi to shuttle to different stops along the waterway. It operates seven days a week and departs every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to midnight. It’s a popular way to get around during the summer, so it’s recommended to book a water taxi ticket in advance.

Taxis and Ride-Sharing Apps

If you’re in a hurry, taxis and ride-hailing services are available throughout Melbourne. Local cabs, such as 13cabs , are white cars with bright orange writing on the sides. Ride-railing services such as Uber, DiDi, and Ola operate all over the city, including the surrounding suburbs. It’s a common and quick way to get around.

Car Rentals

Renting a car to use within Melbourne CBD may not be the best idea. The city is dense with traffic, parking can get pricey, and the town has something called “ hook turns ,” which, if you’re not familiar with, are very tricky to navigate.

On the other hand, if you want to explore the Great Ocean Road or other outer suburb attractions, it might be a good idea to rent a car for the freedom to explore. Melbourne has car rental companies such as Budget, Hertz, Enterprise, and Avis. You can rent a car from the airport or within the city. Don’t forget, Aussies drive on the left side of the road!

Tips for Getting Around Melbourne

Getting around Melbourne isn’t very difficult. The city has an impressive amount of public transportation options with informative signs and friendly employees to help you navigate your way around.

  • Be wary of rush hour: Traveling during rush hour can be a bit of a headache. Peak traffic on public transportation and the roads is Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. During this time, the roads leading into and out of the city will be jam-packed with people traveling to and from work. If you’re traveling by train, be attentive towards the express services.
  • Melbourne CBD is very walkable: Melbourne CBD is easy to walk around because the streets are set up like a grid. If you’re following a map, it’s very straightforward, and sometimes quicker to walk than take the tram.
  • If given the option, choose the train over the bus: The train is a bit more reliable without the traffic and quicker without so many stops.
  • Download the Public Transport Victoria app: This will help with planning your journey throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs. It is available on both Google Play and the Apple Store .

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

ptv journey travel

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

ptv journey travel

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

ptv journey travel

Via Vladimir

ptv journey travel

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

ptv journey travel

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

Suzdal

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

ptv journey travel

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.

Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

The Trans-Siberian Express is the longest train journey in the world. The route takes you from ancient Russian cities through deep forests and breathtaking mountains to Siberian outposts and into Asia. A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.

Travel Icon Lonely Planet Shutters China Operations

Even the longest journeys have to come to an end, and that end has arrived for one iconic travel brand’s time in China. Lonely Planet, the well-known publisher of travel guides and related content, closed its Chinese office, halted all publication in China, and shuttered its Chinese social media accounts.

The company announced the news via social media and a website post on June 26.

“Although reluctant…we still have to regretfully inform you that due to the impact of the past epidemic and the company’s strategic adjustments, Lonely Planet has closed its Chinese office and stopped publishing business in China; all official social media accounts of Lonely Planet in China, including WeChat official accounts, Sina Weibo, Xiaohongshu, Zhihu, etc., have stopped updating,” read the post, titled “I wish you a pleasant journey.”

The announcement follows the closure of Lonely Planet’s Chinese-language magazine in 2022.

Ten years of Chinese-language travel guides

According to Lonely Planet, the brand has published over 300 Chinese-language travel guides since 2013, covering both domestic and international destinations, restaurants, natural wonders, and tourist destinations.

“We are proud to have dozens of outstanding Chinese authors, who, together with equally outstanding translators, editors, photographers, designers, illustrators, cartographers, and partners who keep the company running, practice the editorial principles of ‘responsible travel’ and ‘telling the truth,’  and insist on field research and objective, neutral writing,” the post continued.

Chinese culture website Sixth Tone weighed in on the closure , noting that the company struggled in recent years to keep up with the glut of social-media-based travel information, including the prevalence of influencers on the Chinese travel scene.

“The only thing I want to say to those influencers is to focus more on providing travel advice and less on taking selfies,” Mio Chen, a Chinese travel aficionado, told the site.

Other travelers contrasted Lonely Planet’s practical approach with the catchy but superficial online travel advice popular in China today.

Lonely Planet was founded in Australia in 1973 by husband-and-wife team Maureen and Tony Wheeler. The brand enjoyed great success in the following decades before peaking in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The BBC acquired Lonely Planet in 2007. The brand has since changed hands twice more, first to NC2 Media and then to Red Ventures .

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Guests at The Delta Lounge-JFK can enjoy views of the airfield from the Terrace, replete with regional, seasonally updated plants.

An end-to-end premium journey

The Delta One Lounge cements Delta’s commitment to delivering an end-to-end premium experience, from curb to claim.

The journey starts at check-in: Located on the right-hand side of the main arrivals level on Terminal 4, Delta One customers will be greeted by a team of Elite Service agents providing white-glove service, with warm towels and light refreshments on offer. This fall, the check-in area will feature a private TSA screening lane for added exclusivity.

While the JFK Delta One Lounge is the first of its kind, others will be joining soon: Delta One Lounges at LAX and Boston Logan International will open later this year, expanding the end-to-end premium experience to more customers in more hubs.

From JFK to the rest of the world

Though the Delta One Lounge is a destination unto itself, JFK customers are well-positioned to journey across the globe with Delta.

The nearly 14,000-square-foot Club, which will operate alongside the Club on Terminal 4, Concourse B, seats more than 250 guests and includes sweeping views of the airfield.

Delta offers the most flights and seats of any carrier at JFK, with more than 200 total peak-day departures to more than 90 domestic and international destinations. Customers can fly nonstop from JFK to all of New York’s 50 most popular domestic markets.

This summer, Delta is flying its largest trans-Atlantic schedule ever from JFK, with more than 240 weekly departures to 26 destinations—including new destinations like Naples and destinations not flown since before the pandemic, like Shannon, Ireland.

And Delta will add even more service this winter: the combined partnership of Delta and LATAM will offer more service than any other carrier or joint venture between New York and South America. Also, with daily service to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS) relaunching Dec. 1, Delta will reinforce its No. 1 position as the largest U.S. carrier to Africa.

Wherever their destination, JFK customers can get there in style with Delta.

Scientists Find First Evidence That Butterflies Crossed an Ocean

Researchers discovered painted ladies on a South American beach and then built a case that they started their journey in Europe or Africa.

By Monique Brouillette

Early one morning in late October 2013, Gerard Talavera, an entomologist, saw something highly unusual — a flock of painted lady butterflies stranded on a beach in French Guiana.

The painted lady, or the species Vanessa cardui , is one of the world’s most widespread butterflies, but it isn’t found in South America. Yet there they were, lying in the sand of the continent’s eastern shores, their wings tattered and riddled with holes. Judging by their condition, the bleary-eyed Dr. Talavera, who works at the Institut Botànic de Barcelona in Spain, guessed they were recovering from a long flight.

The insect is a champion of long-distance travel, routinely crisscrossing the Sahara on a trek from Europe to sub-Saharan Africa, covering up to 9,000 miles. Could they also have made the 2,600-mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean without any place to stop and refuel? Dr. Talavera wanted to find out.

Following the long-range movements of insects is challenging. Tools like radio-tracking devices are too large for insects’ small and delicate frames, and radar allows for monitoring only of specific locations. Scientists have had to rely on educated guesses and citizen-scientist observations to piece together travel patterns.

“We see butterflies that appear and disappear, but we are not proving the links directly, we are just making assumptions,” Dr. Talavera said.

In 2018, he developed a way to use a common genetic sequencing tool to analyze pollen DNA. Pollen grains stick to pollinating insects like butterflies when they are feeding on nectar from flowers. Dr. Talavera used a method called DNA metabarcoding to sequence the pollens’ DNA and determine which plant they came from. Later, the DNA could be traced to geographical flora to chart the insect’s path.

In a paper published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, Dr. Talavera and his team describe a crucial clue to cracking the mystery of the stranded butterflies: Pollen clinging to the butterflies in French Guiana matched flowering shrubs in West African countries. These shrubs bloom from August to November, which matches the timeline of the butterflies’ arrival. That suggested the butterflies had crossed the Atlantic. The idea was tantalizing. But Dr. Talavera and his team were careful not to jump to conclusions.

In addition to studying the pollen, the researchers sequenced the butterflies’ genomes to trace their lineage and found they had European-African roots. This ruled out the possibility that they had flown over land from North America. Then, they used an insect-tracking tool called isotope tracing to confirm that the butterflies’ natal origins were in Western Europe, North Africa and West Africa. By adding weather data showing favorable winds blowing from Africa to America, they were building up to a monumental finding.

“This is a brilliant piece of biological detective work,” said David Lohman, an evolutionary ecologist at the City College of New York who was not involved in the work. Dr. Talavera’s forensic-detective-like tracing supported the conclusion that the painted lady butterflies made the first transoceanic journey ever recorded by an insect.

It’s likely they were on their typical route through Africa when they were swept off course by a strong wind. Once over the ocean, the butterflies kept flying until they reached the shore.

Insect migrations are the largest movement of biomass around the world. Over southern England alone, a staggering 3.5 trillion insects migrate annually. Their ability to transport pollen, fungi and even plant diseases across vast distances highlights the global impact of these tiny critters. With the painted ladies’ oceanic migration, experts say, scientists may have a better way of tracking these journeys.

The finding showed that the delicate creatures could endure a difficult and dangerous journey, which most likely lasted between five and eight days. It also demonstrates how much scientists still have to learn. Jessica Ware, an evolutionary biologist at the American Museum of Natural History who was not involved in the study, called the study’s methods “innovative,” adding that it will “help us understand migrations.”
