Traffic, detours

Fans heading to the concert should plan to get there early because of downtown events, construction, and road closures.

The Detroit Tigers play the Los Angeles Angels at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, right across the street at Comerica Park. That will likely cause even more congestion in the Ford Field area.

The ramp from southbound I-375 to Madison Street is closed. Drivers should take southbound I-375 to Lafayette Avenue or westbound Macomb Street, or take Brush Street north to eastbound Madison Street.

Here’s a detour map :

The QLINE runs until midnight on Wednesdays. Fans can use the QLINE’s Park and Ride Program -- park at Wayne State University’s Lot 12 (6050 Woodward Avenue) for $5 and take the QLINE to the Montcalm Street station.

Where to be dropped off, picked up

Fans who get dropped off or picked up -- whether privately or using ride-share services -- have to enter the southbound I-75 service drive from Mack Avenue.

Post-show pickup on the service drive will begin at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Here’s a diagram of the ride-share information for the concert :

Ford Field will follow the NFL’s clear bag policy.

Here’s a list of prohibited items for the event :

What to know about Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour in Detroit

The category is: Bey.

Beyonce Renaissance Tour

Ok, ladies, now let’s get in formation.

The one and only Beyoncé is returning to Ford Field this week for her much buzzed-about Renaissance World Tour . She’s expected to draw a crowd of roughly 60,000 fans to the stadium, so downtown Detroit will be packed with people. It’s the first time she’s performed in Detroit since her 2018 On the Run II Tour with Jay-Z and the third time she’s played Ford Field as a solo act.

Here’s what you need to know about Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour in Detroit.

More: CultureShift ’s Tia Graham and Axios Detroit’s Sam Robinson on Beyoncé in Detroit

When is the show?

Beyoncé will play at Ford Field on Wednesday, July 26. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the powerhouse vocalist scheduled to take the stage between 8-8:30 p.m. for a 2.5-hour show.

Note: As of Wednesday morning, there is a chance of severe weather including thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes between 4 p.m. and midnight on the night of the show. Meteorologists predict that the worst weather will come between 7-9 p.m., so make sure you make a plan to stay safe.

Who’s opening for Beyoncé?

Beyoncé. No, really. She reportedly opens the show with 30 minutes of ballads before kicking off the rest of the set — no other performers in the lineup. So if you don’t want to miss a minute of Queen Bey, plan to take your seat between 7-8 p.m.

What should I wear?

Fans are going all-out for this tour. Think disco, metallics, sequins, glitter. People are even wearing decked-out cowboy hats to coincide with the album’s artwork.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

That being said, with the high demand for the show, lines are expected to be  long . When planning your outfit, consider shoes that are comfortable enough for lots of standing, walking and dancing (and maybe a poncho too for this weather).

What can I bring?

Ford Field is enforcing the  Clear Bag Policy for the Renaissance World Tour. That means that bags larger than a clutch (no more than 4.5” x 6.5”) carried into the stadium must be made of clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and must not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”. For example, a gallon Ziploc bag would be fine, as long as you don’t mind carrying it all night.

Fans are also prohibited from bringing battery-operated clothing or signs, outside food or beverages (including water) or large flags or banners. For a full list of prohibited items,  visit their website .

What is there to eat?

Since outside food and drink is prohibited, you’ll likely want to grab something at the stadium. Ford Field has 50 permanent and 75 portable concession stands around the venue with offerings like hot dogs, chicken tenders, pizza, french fries, beer, soda and water. Just make sure you get your concessions well before the show starts so you don’t miss anything while waiting in a line.

Or, you can grab something to eat before or after the show at places like Tin Roof  (which is open until 2 a.m.),  Buddy’s  (which is open until 11 p.m.) or  Detroit Beer Co. (which is open until midnight).

Where should I park?

Ford Field offers pre-paid parking for $50  in their surrounding lots . Fans can reserve their spot ahead of time online , and ADA parking is available in the parking deck on a first come, first served basis.

The Detroit Tigers will play game two of their three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels at Comerica Park starting at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday, so there will likely be heavy traffic and even more limited parking that night. Whether you decide to go with official Ford Field parking or choose to search for a better deal elsewhere, I would recommend arriving with plenty of time to spare.

Can I still get tickets?

Yes. As of Wednesday morning, floor seats were going for $400+, lower bowl was $275+ and nosebleeds were $185+ for verified resale tickets on Ticketmaster . A limited number of “Club Renaissance” general admission tickets remain, situated within the stage with standing room only, starting at $1,000 plus fees.

It is possible, however, that resellers will drop their prices significantly in the hours leading up to the show as they get desperate, so keep an eye out if you don’t mind making last-minute plans.

What can I expect from the performance?

The 2.5-hour show will include about 30 songs from throughout Beyoncé’s career, primarily featuring those from her 2022 Renaissance album. The Beyhive is saying the performance is a full-blown spectacle, from the vocals to the visuals. You’ve never had fun like this.

Where can you get tickets?

Tickets for the North American leg of the tour will be available through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program. Tickets will go on sale Monday, Feb 6, with an exclusive presale to BeyHive members, according to a Live Nation press release.

Verified Fan registration is now open. Once you register, you'll be placed in a lottery system that determines which fans get invited to purchase tickets. Registration alone doesn't guarantee tickets. If you're selected, you'll get an access code the day before tickets go on sale. Everyone else will be placed on a waitlist. According to Live Nation, this process is intended to help Ticketmaster weed out the resellers and verify your account so that actual fans get priority to buy tickets.

Citi cardmembers will have a special Citi Presale after the Verified Fan process. Get more details here . Verizon will also offer an exclusive presale through their customer loyalty program Verizon Up .

Will Beyoncé be using Ticketmaster like Taylor Swift to sell tickets?

Yes, but given what happened with Taylor Swift's Eras tour (and the fact it led to Congressional hearings about Ticketmaster ’s practices), it seems very likely both Beyoncé and Ticketmaster would want to avoid repeating that mess. That most likely explains the usage of the Verified Fan system.

Where will Beyoncé be playing?

The Renaissance World Tour will hit 40 cities in North America and across Europe. Stops include Paris, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Houston, and many more.

What has Beyoncé said about the Renaissance World Tour?

She just announced it was happening with a post on February 1. Her website didn't immediately contain any more details. But during the Wearable Art Gala in October 2022, she appeared to confirm it would start this summer, as a backstage tour with her mother Tina Lawson was up for auction at the event.

Will Beyoncé be performing at the Grammys (on February 5) and sharing more tour details there?

Not clear yet, but she is the most nominated artist at the ceremony . On January 21, Variety reported that “ talks with show producers are ongoing for a possible onstage appearance ” by Beyoncé.

What can we expect from the tour on stage?

Beyoncé hasn't shared that yet either, but given the artistry she put into her recent Dubai show , it's fair to say we can expect no less than excellence, elaborate costumes, and an incredible experience.

This post will be updated the moment more detail is released.

Beyoncé returned to the stage for first time in four years in January

Last month, Beyoncé made her return to the stage and performed at the opening of the Atlantis The Royal hotel in Dubai. Despite the luxury experience, the singer left fans wanting more, as she did not perform any songs from "Renaissance," The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The invitation-only event marked her first concert in more than four years. She last performed at the  Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 event in 2018.

Beyoncé dominates Grammy nominations

The singer's tour announcement comes days ahead of the Grammys where Beyoncé leads the 2023 lineup with nine nominations, including best dance/electronic album ("Renaissance"), best R&B performance ("Virgo’s Groove") and best traditional R&B performance ("Plastic Off the Sofa").

With 28 wins and 88 total career nominations, Beyoncé now ties her husband, rapper Jay-Z , for the most nominations in Grammy history. If Beyoncé picks up four or more awards this year, she will surpass the late Georg Solti for the most Grammy wins of all time. (The Hungarian-born conductor holds the record with 31.)

Beyoncé called out by Monica Lewinsky: over 'Partition' lyric after ableism controversy

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have got "to be the most intense power couple in the history of music," Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. Mason said after the nominations were revealed. "That’s music and Grammy royalty – that’s the royal family."

Their combined 176 nominations are "absolutely a testament to their talent, to their level of excellence, to their work ethic, to their level of greatness over a long period of time. I don’t even know what the next (leading) couple would be, but it’s not anywhere close.”

Beyoncé's 'Break My Soul.' Taylor Swift's 'Anti-Hero.'  These are the 10 best songs of 2022, ranked.

Beyoncé noticeably was not nominated in any of the music video categories for the Grammys, having not released any album visuals for "Renaissance" since its debut.

Where to Watch Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central on NBC

This all-star lineup will deliver an amazing night of music.

beyonce tour detroit

Michigan Central Station will soon re-open, not as a train depot but as a dining and shopping hub for Detroit, and to inaugurate its new era, a bevy of Detroit icons are coming together for a one-night-only performance.  Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central will stream live on Peacock and subsequently air on NBC, and you don't want to miss it. Keep reading for all the information.

Who is performing in Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central ?

The outdoor spectacular will take place on June 6, though in-person tickets are sold out. The 90-minute concert includes Michigan natives Diana Ross, Big Sean, Illa J, Jack White, Kierra Sheard, Theo Parrish, Slum Village, the Clark Sisters, Sky Jetta and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Detroit Lions Barry Sanders will also make an appearance.

Non-Michigan-ians are on the lineup too, like Common, Fantasia, Melissa Etheridge and Jelly Roll , and presenters Mike Epps and Sophia Bush. Eminem , who paid tribute to his hometown of Detroit in his semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile , is an executive producer of the event.

What is Michigan Central used for now?

The train station opened in 1913, the tallest of its kind in the world at the time. However, it closed in 1988 and remained unoccupied until the Ford Motor Company purchased the building in 2018. It's been under restoration since, and the concert marks the beginning of its gradual opening to the public as both a site of historical importance and bustling business.

"Detroit is known around the world for its musical talent, and having so many legendary artists kick off the celebration for the reopening of the iconic Michigan Central Station shows how meaningful this moment is for our city,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan in a press release. “This historic landmark symbolizes Detroit’s resilience, innovation, and now, its bright future. This is about more than preserving a piece of our past. It also is about paving the way for a new era of growth and opportunity for all Detroiters.”

7 Detroit tours that tell a deeper story of the city: What to know

A s a little boy, about 8 years old with his brown hair spiked in the late ‘90s style, Gabriel Gutierrez would take his brother’s hand and cross the street from his parents’ tortilla business, enter a heavenly smelling donut shop, pass the lively store patrons, and order a coffee for his mom or their employees.

For himself, he’d order a white cream Long John, somewhat like an éclair, just to eat the cream.

These days, Gutierrez owns that hand-cut donut shop, Donut Villa, in southwest Detroit, which has ties not only to his personal history but that of his family, whose first southwest Detroit business opened in the 1940s. It is part of the greater fabric of community histories that make up Detroit’s story, as told by the City Institute on one of their "Detroit in Context Learning Journey" tours.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The City Institute is one of a number of organizations to offer tours that go a bit deeper than sightseeing and basic headlines in Detroit. The groups seek to give context to where Detroit is now, where it is going, and often to correct the record on where it’s been.

Some tours explore the once prominent Black Bottom neighborhood, some explore Detroit’s history with the Underground Railroad, some explore Corktown, and ones like the City Institute’s "Learning Journey" also bring the city’s story forward to today and look to the future.

Though not a definitive list of all the tours in Detroit, here are some tour groups and guides to help deepen your knowledge:

City Institute

The "Learning Journey," on which Gutierrez’s business was featured , is a yearly, all-day bus tour that goes neighborhood by neighborhood so that attendees can hear from business owners, investors, and nonprofit and city leaders on the history of the neighborhoods, what’s currently offered there, how it supports itself, and future projects. A shorter version of the tour is also offered, primarily for private tour groups.

The City Institute’s mission is to equip residents and stakeholders to build an inclusive, equitable and thriving future for Detroit. Southwest, with its shifting demographics over the last century, is just one neighborhood that can serve as a foundation for those seeking to understand the city a bit better, said Gutierrez.

“There's a lot of history and a lot of stories,” Gutierrez said of the city. “Not always great, right? And for people to just understand that the communities that they are involved with, they have extensive roots and histories of their own that can provide context.”

Learning the city’s wins also encourages retention and keeps energy to fight for Detroit’s future, by the telling of Jeanette Pierce, founder and president of the City Institute.

“We believe it's important for people to understand how we got to where we are … then come to today, where we actually meet and hear about and talk to people doing amazing work in the city,” said Pierce.

  • Mode of transportation: Walking, bus or virtual

Black Scroll Network History & Tours

Jamon Jordan, Detroit’s first official historian, was appointed to his role in 2021 by Mayor Mike Duggan. Before that, however, he was already known as a prominent unofficial historian of the city, founding the Black Scroll Network History & Tours.

While Jordan said he encourages folks to do the tours that exist on restaurants, bars, the auto industry and the like, he said he realized they were leaving out a big part of the Detroit story – African American history.

On his various tours, Jordan may point out the neighborhood where three Detroit music legends grew up or talk about the presence of Black people in the region in 1700s. Some tours also explore the once thriving Black neighborhood and business district that were destroyed through racist officials, urban renewal and highway building , with Jordan pointing out the still present apartments, townhouses and school building that were given the space instead.

“A big portion of Detroit’s history is invisible, and you have to have someone help you see what is no longer present,” he said.

  • Topics: Motown, slavery, African origins, Black Bottom, the Underground Railroad, the 1967 rebellion and more
  • Cost: Generally $5 - $50 for walking tours, $60 per person for bus tours, and $50 for virtual tours
  • Length: 2 hours for most
  • Mode of transportation: Walking, bus and virtual
  • Where to register: Black Scroll Network's Eventbrite page for public tours, and [email protected] or blackscrollnetwork.weebly.com for private tours

Wheelhouse Detroit

Another way to get a deeper knowledge of the city? By bike.

Wheelhouse Detroit is a bike shop along Detroit’s riverfront, but tours have been a part of its mission since its opening in 2008 thanks to owner Kelli Kavanaugh and her founding partner’s backgrounds in community development.

“It was important for us to tell a story of Detroit that isn’t necessarily the one that the masses hear or understand to be true,” she said, later adding: “We’re not cheerleaders, we’re trying to tell a real story of a very interesting and complicated city.”

This story includes discussion of history and current developments. On the Corktown tour she gives, Kavanaugh delves into how freeway development, urban renewal, and parking for Tiger Stadium shaped the neighborhood as it is now, along with gentrification there. She also uses history to counter any belief that it only got “cool” now.

  • Topics: Poletown churches, Eastern Market, Hamtramck, the auto industry, techno and more.
  • Cost: $30 for shorter, weekday tours ($40 including bike rental), $45 for 3-hour tours ($55 with rental) and private tours starting at $200-$250 for up to six people.
  • Length: 2 hours for shorter, weekday tours, 3 hours for others
  • Mode of transportation: “Pedal power,” using bikes or e-bikes, used manually. Attendees can bring bikes or rent from Wheelhouse Detroit
  • Where to register: wheelhousedetroit.com

Ken Coleman

As a Detroit historian, journalist and communications professional, Ken Coleman likes to say he’s been dedicated to chronicling Black life in Detroit since 1991.

His extensive historical knowledge goes back way further, of course, and it’s his passion to share Black history as an independent tour guide, covering whatever topics in that area a client may want.

Some favorite stops include the Gateway to Freedom International Memorial along the Detroit riverfront which pays homage to those who used and were involved in the Underground Railroad . There’s also the Second Baptist Church of Detroit, which lays claim to being the oldest religious institution owned by the Black community in the Midwest, a former station on the Underground Railroad and establishing the city’s first school for Black children.

  • Topics: Motown, the Underground Railroad, Black Bottom and more
  • Cost: Prices starting at about $50 per hour per small group, and generally $300-$500 for a 3-4 hour tour for a larger organization
  • Length: 1-2 hours for walking tours, 3-4 for bus tours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking or bus, if provided
  • Where to register: Email Coleman at [email protected] or call him at 313-551-1304

Preservation Detroit

Preservation Detroit was founded in 1975 as a student organization fighting the demolition of historic campus buildings at Wayne State University. These days the group works to preserve historic sites throughout Detroit, and it hosts tours on the history of architecture, sculptures and more to educate the masses.

A high point of downtown tour coordinator Davis Zaleski’s walking excursion is a visit to the Guardian Building, the 1920s, cathedral-like, Art Deco skyscraper. There’s also a quick stop by the recently reopened 38-story, Italian Renaissance-style Book Tower.

“During the early part of the 20th century, with the advent of the auto industry and all the other industries, they built like crazy and they built some of the most beautiful buildings in the country,” Zaleski said.

Some of that history has been torn down or poorly developed, but preservation has increased over the years, Zaleski said. Preservation Detroit likes to emphasize good development, and Zaleski said he hopes attendees walk away with an appreciation for what Detroit was and could be.

  • Topics: Ferry Street, Midtown, Eastern Market, downtown, public art, cemeteries, churches and more
  • Cost: $15 for members, students and seniors; $18 for all others on public tours; private tours, per the website, can be arranged for $100 for groups of five people or less and rates of $20 per person for larger groups
  • Length: Between 2 and 2.5 hours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking
  • Where to register: preservationdetroit.org or through Eventbrite

Detroit History Tours

Detroit History Tours, along with the Detroit History Club, serves several purposes, said Bailey Sisoy-Moore, executive director of the two. Key among its motivations are the ideas that Detroit’s history should be written by Detroiters and that it’s hard to defund or vote to implode historic sites that are fully understood.

“History education helps make sure that the important parts of our history don't disappear quietly,” Sisoy-Moore said.

The tour group tells the history of the city starting with the Native American tribes that were here first through to present day and even future development plans.

  • Topics: Suffragettes, the Detroit People Mover transit system, cops and mobsters, LGBTQ history and more
  • Cost: $27 for walking tours, $30-$65 for bus tours, $5 - $20 for self-guided mobile app tours with lifetime download; food tours are $80 - $120, including the meals and tips. Private tours start at $250 if transportation is provided, $450 for walking and $1,525 for tours with the van or bus provided by Detroit History Tours.
  • Length: 2 hours for walking tours, 90 minutes to 3.5 hours for bus tours
  • Where to register: detroithistorytours.com

Detroit Historical Society

Founded in 1921, the Detroit Historical Society now boasts tours at not only the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, but also at locations throughout metro Detroit.

Guided tours at the historical museum take groups of 15 or more people through the indigenous populations that were here, auto history, culture and more, said Kimmie Dobos, manager of education and public programs. There are also tailored museum tours that dive deeper into the African American experience and what led to the 1967 rebellion.

The Great Lakes museum, on Belle Isle, also features a maritime history tour exploring Detroit’s long history on the water from canoes to freighters and more.

For some off-site explorations, there are “Behind The Scenes” tours of historic locations including neighborhoods, a gallery, and a battlefield.

  • Topics: The summer of 1967, Temple Beth El, Boston Edison, Eastern Market, tiny homes and more
  • Cost: Guided tours at the museums are $11 for adults and $10 for seniors, the 1967 rebellion tour is $12 for adults and $11 for seniors, and the “Detroit’s African American Perspectives” tour with Jamon Jordan is $300 for up to 20 people.“Behind The Scenes” tours are $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers.
  • Length: Generally 1- 1.5 hours
  • Where to register: detroithistorical.org

Of course, these are just some of the tour offerings in the city. You also can see the sights with a Segway tour , by boat and there’s even a tour to learn some Detroit history on a historic bar tour , among others.

Trina Says ‘Beyoncé Over Everybody’ for 'Queen of Rap' Title, Mentions Nicki Minaj as One of Her Top Rappers

On 'Reality With the King,' the Miami rap veteran also detailed the issues regarding her "BAPS" collaboration with Minaj, which involved Trina's manager.

Trina doesn't have beef with Nicki Minaj , but she still doesn't put her above Beyoncé when it comes to rap.

Trina originally made the statement about Bey last December, which the Miami rap veteran doubled down on during a recent interview with YouTuber Carlos King on the webseries Reality With the King .

Around the 50-minute mark of the video below, Trina gave some context to her 2019 collaboration with Minaj, titled "BAPS," and its release, which was derailed partly by her team at the time.

The song was intended to be a single, but the rollout went amiss when Trina's team wasn't "being honest." "I kind of felt a way," she said around the 57-minute mark. "I felt like, in my moment...This is not a time to play."

View this video on YouTube

But the release went even further south when one of Trina's team members spoke offensively about Minaj on social media, thinking that the Pink Friday 2 artist wasn't supporting "BAPS."

"I felt like he acted out of emotion but you don't act out of emotion on [Instagram] Live against a celebrity; that's somebody that I know that I have a relationship with."

Amid the issues, Trina's mother, Vernessa Taylor, was undergoing a cancer battle, which she succumbed to in 2019.

beyonce tour detroit

As Trina continued to struggle with her team, specifically her manager, she called Minaj "one of the first people" to contact her after her mother died. But while the women are friendly, albeit not having spoken to her in a few years , Trina continues to defend Beyoncé as the ' Queen of Rap,' to the disappointment of the Barbz.

"If they would have said, 'Alright, give me your top five queens.' Okay, I'm going to give it to the girls, always," Trina said around the 1:06:30 mark, referring to her interview at One Music Festival. "First off, I'm fresh off the Renaissance Tour, let's be very clear."

"You can't deny or or take credit from nothing that Beyoncé do, I just love Beyoncé. It was in a hype of the moment," she continued, adding, "It's going to be Beyoncé over everybody to me. I just love Beyoncé, she's a top-tier, upper-echelon, she pushes the envelope beyond envelopes."

Clarifying that Minaj, Missy Elliott, and Lil Kim are among the "several queens" that she gives props to, Trina added that she's "never not gonna" put Beyoncé at number one.

The-Dream, Grammy-winning longtime Beyoncé collaborator, sued by ex-protégé over alleged sexual abuse

By Marissa Wenzke

June 5, 2024 / 5:51 PM PDT / KCAL News

65th GRAMMY Awards - Show

Music producer The-Dream is being sued by a former collaborator who alleges that she was sexually abused by the eight-time Grammy award winner after he promised to help her career as an aspiring young artist.

Filed Tuesday in a Los Angeles federal court, the lawsuit accuses The-Dream, whose legal name is Terius Gesteelde-Diamant, of subjecting Chanaaz Mangroe, 33,  to "violent sexual acts and vicious psychological torture" after an associate of the producer allegedly contacted Mangroe over Instagram in late 2014 when she was 23 years old.

Mangroe, a singer from the Netherlands whose stage name is Channii Monroe, said she first met The-Dream — the songwriter behind hits such as Rihanna's "Umbrella," Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" and Justin Bieber's "Baby" — when she was living in the U.S. on an artist's visa sponsored by a U.S.-based production company.

According to the lawsuit, the producer allegedly told Mangroe at the start of their professional relationship that he would write hit songs for her and promised her an opening spot on Beyoncé's upcoming tour. Mangroe's lawsuit alleges that she was forced to "diet and exercise excessively" in preparation for the tour and that she was subjected to an "abusive, violent, and manipulative relationship" with the producer.

Mangroe alleges in her lawsuit that she was not paid for her music, which she claims was "taken from her without any explanation."

"To this day, Ms. Mangroe is in the dark about whether or not she is still bound to Dream and Contra Paris, who owns her music rights, or where the recordings of her work are located," the lawsuit states.

Kelly Rowland And The Dream In Concert

In a statement provided to The New York Times , the producer denied the allegations against him.

"These claims are untrue and defamatory," reads the statement to the Times. "I oppose all forms of harassment and have always strived to help people realize their career goals. As someone committed to making a positive impact on my fellow artists and the world at large, I am deeply offended and saddened by these accusations."

Along with The-Dream, defendants named in the lawsuit include The-Dream's label, Contra Paris, and Epic Records. Epic Records did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"It is not clear if Contra Paris ever signed any artists to its label (aside from Ms. Mangroe), or whether any records were released by the label," the lawsuit states. "Today, the Contra Paris website appears partially defunct."

Mangroe alleges in the lawsuit that in July 2016, more than a year after she first met The-Dream,  she was told that Epic Records "no longer wanted to distribute her music because Dream failed to deliver the records." She claims in her lawsuit that The-Dream kept her out of the loop for months, did not invite her to meetings and did not include her in conversations about her music or her status with Epic.

According to the lawsuit, Mangroe decided to sue in order to "speak up for herself and other female artists who have been tormented by powerful and selfish men in the recording industry."

Chiles channels Beyoncé and Pucci. Biles evokes Chanel. In gymnastics, leotards bridge fashion and sport

FORT WORTH, Texas — As Jordan Chiles stood at the end of the vault runway, the lights of Dickies Arena reflected off the 4,400 Swarovski crystals on her leotard, creating sparkles reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower twinkling against the dark backdrop of a Parisian night sky.

She lifted her arms to salute the judges, shimmering with tiny rainbows, and sprinted toward the vault table, becoming a glittering blur of blue, pink, red and green as she flipped and twisted through the air.

Her leotard, the source of the explosion of color and sparkle, was one-of-a-kind, a custom creation inspired by an outfit Beyoncé wore during a Renaissance Tour concert last year. Chiles found a photo of the megastar in a bold Pucci bodysuit and sent it to the designers at gymnastics apparel manufacturer GK Elite to use as a reference point for her competition look for night one of the 2024 U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Friday.

The result was an attention-grabbing blend of checkered patterns in green and orange, pink and blue, and red and white with pink and red stripes across the chest. The sublimated print was covered in crystals that formed a necklace-like triangle to recreate the look of the extravagant body chain Beyoncé wore around her neck and waist.

“It’s gonna look like there’s a battery pack in the leotard. It’s going to be that blingy under the stadium lights,” said Jeanne Diaz, the design director for GK Elite, before this week’s championships.

Indeed it did.

Leotards can capture a personality, convey a style and provide a boost of confidence on the competition floor. For the top gymnasts in the world, months of planning go into designing a custom fit that looks distinctive and withstands the rigors of competition. Only the highest quality crystals are bedazzled into the leotards to ensure they don’t come loose mid-routine, and the garments are made to the athletes’ specific measurements so the fit stays perfect through each flip and twist.

A quartet of medalists from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 — Chiles, Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey — sported custom GK creations at nationals Friday, with combined crystal counts totaling well into the 10,000s. Each gymnast worked with GK for months to create a special look.

“A leo is almost like putting on our armor for competition,” said Carey, who won gold in the floor exercise at the Tokyo Games. “I really want to feel powerful and confident because the better I feel, the better I feel like I’m gonna do.”

While U.S. gymnasts will all wear the same uniform at the Paris Olympics, domestic meets like this weekend’s championships allow athletes to express themselves through custom designs.

Sleeveless versions of the leotards are sold as practice wear, marketed through GK’s sponsorships of Biles, Chiles, Carey and Lee. But the creations for them for the mats in Fort Worth, with meticulous, handmade details, are one-of-ones.

Think of a signature basketball shoe. But with the sensibility of haute couture.

“What Simone has with us is our equivalent of a Jordan brand,” said Matt Cowan, chief executive of Elite Sportswear, the parent company of GK. “Simone has her signature collection that is inspired by her performances, her likes, her aesthetic, her innovation. She truly can bring a product that’s catered and representative of her to the community.”

The process to achieve that look-good, feel-good final product is different for each athlete, Diaz, the GK design director, said. Carey and Lee usually request specific colors and leave the design direction up to GK. Chiles sends reference photos. Diaz has collaborated with Biles for so long that she knows the 2016 all-around Olympic champion’s taste.

Biles’ style is “timeless but also unique. High-fashion,” Diaz said. Her fuchsia leotard for last month’s Core Hydration Classic had a criss-cross pattern of crystals on the bodice that evoked the iconic quilted Chanel handbag, while her brown leotard for the second night of U.S. Championships on Sunday will feature gold Swarovski crystals with a high collar to give a royal feel. The design reflects Biles’ position as the 27-year-old, accomplished face of the sport.

“At the beginning of her gymnastics career her leos were really playful, fun,” Diaz said. “Then they got a refinement to them. They’ve culminated now with this really regal look.”

beyonce tour detroit

Chiles, who trains alongside Biles at her Texas gym, “has a more edgy flair to her,” Diaz said.

“She has a very expressive personality and that shows through in her leotards that she gravitates toward.”

The final night of the women’s event on Sunday will bring what Diaz called a “showstopper” for Chiles: a white leotard based on a Bronx and Banco bodysuit Beyoncé wore onstage in Las Vegas last August.

The idea behind Beyoncé’s bodysuit was the artist being the diamond at the center of a crown, Natalie De’banco, Bronx and Banco’s founder, said. Five people worked on the garment simultaneously, taking 150 hours to attach each crystal individually.

Chiles was drawn to the eye-catching silhouette of the catsuit, which GK mimicked with mesh-lined cutouts. Her version features 3,086 crystals and a detailed strappy back. But it’s not so easy to dress like Beyoncé.

“It’s heavy!” Chiles said. “It feels like a wedding dress.”

beyonce tour detroit

Gymnasts’ performance styles also influence their competition leos, as is the case for Lee and Carey.

“Suni gravitates towards more feminine looks, softer looks so the style lines do have curves to them,” Diaz said. “We tend to lean sportier for (Jade) but still strong looks and still filled with bling.”

GK isn’t the only outfitter of elite gymnasts. Sylvia P, an Australian gymnastics wear brand based in Brisbane, creates custom looks for Shilese Jones, who withdrew from championships due to a shoulder injury but remains a front-runner to make her Olympic debut in Paris. The brand looks to Fashion Week runways, the Met Gala and red carpets to come up with concepts that bring Jones’ personal style out on the competition floor, Sandra Cunningham, Sylvia P’s creative director, said.

Jones, a two-time world champion, cited Zendaya and Beyoncé as her style icons and also looks at figure skating dresses for ideas for jewel placement. As for colors, the 21-year-old prefers a darker palette.

“I stick to the dark purples, blue, red and black. Those are my top favorites,” she said. “I just don’t feel 100 percent confident if I’m wearing something Skittle yellow or bright sun orange. It’s just not completely for me.”

The goal is an elevated look with an elegance Jones carries in her gymnastics. With sparkles, of course. Lots of sparkles.

“I want to feel the sparkliest,” Jones said. “I want to have the most jewels on my leotard, and I want to feel all types of confident.”

Bedazzling is the most time-consuming part of the process. Hundreds of crystals must be placed by hand to fill out a machine-generated motif. The leotard Jones planned to wear Friday, which had around 6,000 stones forming intricate line work down the sleeves, took four hours to fully cover in crystals, Cunningham estimated. Jones’ leotards often feature an extra bit of sparkle as a nod to her father, Sylvester, who died in 2021 after a long battle with kidney disease. She frequently incorporates crystals spelling out “XII. XX. MMXXI.” — the date of her dad’s passing — into her designs and wore the Roman numerals down the sleeve of her leotard at the Core Hydration Classic.

“I wanted to carry him out there with me on the floor, doing the gymnastics with me,” she said. “Having my dad out there, it just means more to me and makes my heart happy going out on the floor.”

beyonce tour detroit

Two hours after she debuted her lavish look, Chiles ended Friday by taking the floor to a mix of Beyoncé’s tracks and vocals, connecting her leotard to her routine. Her night wasn’t without blemish — she fell on the final tumbling pass of her routine and landed seventh in the all-around — but with a month until the U.S. Olympic Trials, Chiles and the other gymnasts still have time to hone their skills and prove why they deserve a spot on the five-person team in Paris.

The styles and sparkle they wore on the floor showed they’ve already brought Paris Fashion Week to Fort Worth.

Detroit native returns home as dancer on Beyoncé's Renaissance tour stop at Ford Field

Trinity Sanders backstage wearing Motor City Dance Factory gear.

Trinity Sanders knew at a young age she would dance professionally, but she didn’t know that meant with Beyoncé on the Renaissance World Tour.

The 20-year-old can be seen on stage Wednesday night at Ford Field as the tour makes a highly anticipated stop in Detroit. This is the first time Sanders, who grew up on the city's east side and graduated from Cass Technical High School in 2021, is dancing in a professional tour.

“Trinity has always been very self-motived, determined and passionate about dance,” said Zandria Lucas, assistant studio director at Motor City Dance Factory in Southfield.

Sanders, who is publicly known as Trinity Joy, was enrolled at Motor City Dance Factory when she was 4 years old.

“She took everything she did and made it personal to her, and that shows a testament of what a great dancer she is because it allows her to figure out her own style as a movement artist," Lucas said.

Sanders also took pride in helping her fellow dancers.

“You would look up and see her helping another dancer in the room or give them advice,” said Lucas. “Whenever Trinity is in town or when she’s able, she’ll come back here and teach a class or assist if we need her.”

Sanders went viral on TikTok in October 2022 for dancing a style she calls “Trapllet," which she describes as a mixture of ballet and trap music movement. She also calls herself “The Traperinna."

“Watching her mix the two styles she loved the most was very Trinity,” said Lucas. “She can do ballet, hip-hop and jazz because she’s a very well-rounded dancer and she never wanted to be stuck in one genre of dance.”

Her fiery passion for dancing "Trapllet" was fueled by a combination of Sanders' favorite style of dance and the music she loves.

“My dream is to do ballet with a sprinkle of hip-hop for a Durk music video,” Sanders said on Instagram in July 2022. “Do you know how hard that would be? To be the only rapper with a ballerina dancing in their music video?”

More: Beyoncé is coming to Detroit: Where to find concert outfits, activities

The Renaissance World Tour has taken Sanders across Europe with stops in London, Paris and Warsaw, as well as North America with stops in Toronto, Nashville and Chicago. Wednesday night, the dancer will perform in front of a hometown audience.

“It was always very clear that Trinity had the ability to dance professionally,” said Lucas. “I knew it. I knew this was something she would always do because it was meant for her.”

The entertainment industry isn’t the easiest for dancers, Lucas said. It can be hard to receive recognition or obtain success. But Sanders persevered, knowing that dancing was what she was supposed to do.

“Nothing was given to her, and nothing came easy to her, even for how talented she is,” said Lucas. “She’s a good example to dancers that no matter what adversities you face along your career, everything aligns exactly how it’s supposed to. Your time is coming and if you continue to have confidence in yourself and stay determined, you are going to reach your goal.”
