About the tour

Cinque terre day trip from Florence

The tour will begin with your private driver collecting you from your hotel in Florence (another custom location in the area can be agreed) with a luxury sedan or minivan, and after about 2H drive you will reach Manarola, the first of the “Five Lands”, namely “ Cinque Terre ”.

Upon arrival in Manarola, you will meet your licensed private guide who will lead you through this beautiful town. Your tour will proceed through the narrow pebbled streets, bringing you to the rocky cove surrounded by colorful buildings.

From Manarola, you will take a train/ferry for a short ride to Vernazza. Enjoy the ancient fortress used to protect the town for centuries from pirates and visit the domed church dedicated to Santa Margherita d’Antiochia. During the tour, accordingly to the itinerary and your tour guide suggestions, you can have lunch and taste the flavors of the regions.

From Vernazza, you will then depart by train/ferry and reach our last stop, the beautiful village of Monterosso. The tour will then conclude with a transfer back to your hotel in Florence or other desired location.

Please note that the towns of Cinque Terre cannot be toured by car! You will visit the different villages together with your private guide (about 4H private tour) by train or boat (boat service is suspended during Autumn/Winter season and in case of bad sea conditions). Your chauffeur will take you from Florence to Manarola and then will pick you up again in Monterosso to drive back to Florence.

Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence with Boat Ride

Visit these iconic fishing villages the easy way on this tour to the beautiful italian riviera.

Looking for a stress-free way to see the stunning coastline and brightly colored fishing villages of Cinque Terre? With return transport from Florence, this day tour makes it easy to explore a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s truly worth the hype. You’ll visit four of the Italy's most beautiful seaside villages, with free time to get lost in their cobbled streets, find a spot for a delicious Mediterranean lunch, laze on picture-perfect beaches, and enjoy a boat ride along the coast.

Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence with Boat Ride

  • Meeting point in Piazzale Montelungo
  • Private coach travel from Florence
  • Train to Vernazza
  • Guided tour
  • Train to Monterosso al Mare
  • Sunbathe at the beach
  • Riomaggiore

Setting off early to make the most of the day, you'll meet your local guide at Piazzale Montelungo bus terminal in central Florence, where you'll board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach for a journey through Tuscany to the Ligurian Coast—home to the villages of Cinque Terre. You'll arrive first in Manarola, before visiting Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, and Riomaggiore, traveling between them on the local train and by boat to see a different perspective of the coast.

Although this trip operates with a larger group than you'll find on most of our tours, a lot of your time today will be free to explore the villages, viewpoints, and local bars and restaurants independently. Your local trip leader will be there to provide advice on where to go, what to do, and to make sure you get from village to village (and back to Florence, of course!).

Cinque Terre Day Tour Description

Your full-day tour includes:

Private, air-conditioned, round-trip transportation from Florence

Visit the villages of Manarola, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare, with train tickets included

Boat ride along the coast to Riomaggiore

English-speaking trip leader

Group coach tour with plenty of free time

This tour is usually conducted in one language only, English. On some occasions, however, explanations may be given in two languages (English and Spanish) during the bus ride. Once you arrive at the destination, you will have a dedicated English-speaking tour leader.

Travel From Florence

Your day begins with a journey through northern Tuscany on an air-conditioned coach, starting from a convenient location in downtown Florence, close to most hotels and the Santa Maria Novella train station. Sit back and enjoy the scenery as your trip leader shares stories and advice on how to spend your day on the beautiful Italian Riviera.

The UNESCO Villages of Cinque Terre

Only a few decades ago, these five quaint towns on the Ligurian coast were isolated and unknown to most of the world. On this trip you will explore the wonderful natural harbors and streets of brightly painted houses that used to guide the fishermen ashore.

Your first stop is to explore the medieval alleyways of Manarola, the second smallest of the five villages, and famous for a sweet dessert wine called Sciacchetrà. After a quick briefing, you'll be free to stroll around independently until it's time to catch the coastal train to Vernazza.

The colorful port of Vernazza is regarded as one of Italy's most beautiful villages, and is overlooked by a centuries-old castle high on the rocks. Another short train journey will bring you to the wonderful beaches of Monterosso, where you can sunbathe on the sand and take in the breeze of the Mediterranean.

Sail to the Last Stop

Riomaggiore famous for its panoramic views, blue waters and more amazing pastel homes. To arrive in Riomaggiore, you'll sail down the coast by boat, taking in a whole new perspective of the cliffs and towns dotted along the rocky seafront. You'll have time here to enjoy the views from the panoramic terraces of the village, and perhaps refresh yourself with a cold drink or two before heading back to the city.

In the late afternoon, your driver will return with the coach to take you and the rest of your group back to central Florence. If you're hungry from all the sunshine and exploring, your guide will be happy to advise on some great nearby places for your evening meal.

A Day by the Sea

Great experience visiting the five lands by the sea. Especially convenient was the bus and train transfers which were all handled for us.

Excellent Day Tour

The tour itself and Fedrica the guide and Luigi the driver did very well. A big complaint though was the agents meeting us at the designated tour start point were ripping everyone off by charging an extra 20 of 30 euro each for themselves. I told them no way were we paying extra and was told ok then. This was the only bummer experience of the the tour.

You’ll arrive in Cinque Terre by comfortable minivan. The driver will also be your guide as you travel between each of the five villages. This can be by train, by boat, or by minivan depending on the group or by weather. Your tour group will have a maximum of 8 travelers.

As you travel to each of the five villages located at Cinque Terre, your guide will tell you the history and legends of each. You’ll also enjoy admission to various historical sites at each, such as Biblioteca Civica Monterosso al Mare in the largest of the 5 villages.

At the stop in Pisa on your way back to Florence, you will have plenty of free time to explore the Leaning Tower and take in all the other beautiful sites here. If you plan on entering the Leaning Tower, it’s best to purchase your admission in advance so you have as much time as possible while the tour is stopped here.

4. Best Sightseeing Tour: Cinque Terre Day Trip with Optional Hike and Lunch

  • Departure Point : Santa Maria Novella train station
  • Duration : 13 hours
  • Includes : Transportation to and from Cinque Terre from Florence, guided hike through all 5 villages of Cinque Terre, time allotted for swimming, entrance into the Parco Nazionale Cinque Terre

For some, there’s nothing quite like experiencing a beautiful place like Cinque Terre on foot. This hiking day trip from Florence will allow you to do just that. You also may want to bring swimming attire so you can enjoy a few minutes in the cool, salty waters of this coastal area.

There are dozens of various walking paths that weave in and out of each of the 5 villages that make up Cinque Terre. The Sentiero Azzurro links all of the villages while offering breathtaking views of each coastal area and the fishing commerce below.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has much to offer the hiker. Your experienced guide will make it even better as you learn of the history of Cinque Terre and are taken to some of the most impactful locations here. For example, the church in Vernazza with a cornerstone that’s dated 1338.

The entire hike covers 3.4 miles so it’s important to have an appropriate fitness level. However, the 3.4 miles will take you to places here that cannot be reached by car. This means your experience here is much more than that of many other visitors to the area.

5. Best Combination Tour: Pisa and Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence by Train

There’s just nothing like enjoying the views of the Italian countryside from a train. Train travel in Italy is quite popular, and it also allows you to reach your destinations much faster. While stopped in Pisa, you will be able to enjoy the sites of both the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Duomo. If you’d like to enter these attractions, be sure to purchase your ticket prior to the trip. There will also be time for you to take pictures at the Field of Dreams.

In Vernazza, there will be time for taking a quick dip in the waves if you’ve worn or brought swimming attire.

Your Guide to Florence & Cinque Terre Italy

If you’re planning a vacation to Florence, Italy you should know what airport you’ll be flying into, the best accommodations available, what restaurants to stop by, and more. In this travel guide, we give you all the information you’ll need to get started planning your vacation. Have you been to Florence and want to suggest a tourist stop or restaurant? Comment below!

Airports & Entry

There is a small airport in Florence, the Florence Peretola. It was previously known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport. However, you will most likely fly into the Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa. This is a much larger airport so long-distance, foreign flights are most likely to land here.

Your passport will need to be valid for at least six months past your intended date of departure. If you’re planning on an extended stay, you can stay in Italy for up to 90 days without the need for a visa, so long as your passport is valid.

Planning Tips

Visiting Florence can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, it’s important to plan and prepare for your trip properly. Here, we have our top 5 tips for those planning a trip to Florence, Italy. Have you visited and have a tip of your own? Leave it in the comments down below!

Tip #1: Don’t be Afraid to Spit

When wine tasting in Italy, it is common for the taster to swish the wine around in their mouth to get the full profile of flavors, and then spit the wine out. This is so that you can taste many more wines without becoming intoxicated. It may feel a bit uncomfortable to spit out your drink in public, but it’s actually the cultural norm for this country.

Tip #2: Eat Light

You’ll find that even entrees featuring meat and pasta are smaller in portion size than what we see here in the US. Most of the time, meals consist of lighter fare including crostini, cured meat, and cheeses. Do not be surprised at the smaller portions of heavy meals and the abundance of lighter snacks.

Tip #3: Explore Florence on Foot

Not only is walking the preferred method of getting around in Florence, but it is also the easiest. While you may be walking with many other tourists, walking allows you to see more of the city. It may even take longer to wait for a taxi or bus than it would to walk to your destination. You will also most likely be walking at many of the attractions. Be sure to bring a pair or two of comfortable walking shoes.

Tip #4: Prioritize Your List

It would take months, if not years, to visit and explore every museum, gallery, eatery, and other important location within the city of Florence. Be sure to prioritize the list of places you’d like to see based on the length of time you’re spending here. Many of the attractions have estimated wait times based on the time of year and time of day you are visiting. This makes it easier to plan out your sightseeing.

Tip #6: Explore The Surrounding Cities

Venice is only a few hours northeast of Florence. This famous beautiful city is a must see! You must see the incomparable St Marks Basilica and take a gondola ride though its canals. There is so much to see and do there it needs to be on your list of places to see. A top destination is Tuscany, be sure to take a day trip into the Tuscany countryside and see the hilltop towns!

Tip #5: Take Those 500 Steps

The Cathedral in Florence, called the Duomo, is the 4th-largest cathedral in the world. It took nearly 2 centuries to complete. Be sure to save at least one day to explore it. If you’d like to reach the highest point in Florence by hiking the 463 steps to the cathedral’s cupola, you’ll need to make a reservation. However, you won’t be disappointed.

Restaurants & Eating Out

It seems even the food vendors at every corner and in front of every attraction have some of the best food available. These vendors also make it very quick to grab a bite to eat while on your way from one destination to another.

If you’re looking for some of the best gelato in Florence, you want to check out Carapina. The flavors of gelato available will change based on the season, and the number of choices is limited on purpose, but if you’ve ever thought of trying gelato with either olive oil or parmesan, this is the place.

The Borgo san Jacopo is one of the most exclusive restaurants in Florence. There are just four tables on a small terrace, but this terrace offers breathtaking views of the Ponte Vecchio. The star chef, Peter Brunel, offers mouthwatering entrées. Save room for the purple potato sorbet with various toppings, including gold leaf, for dessert.

A popular stop for many tourists is La Menagere. La Menagere is home to both a café and cocktail bar, but you’ll also find beautiful bouquets in the flower shop as well as quality Italian homeware in the store. Dinner entrées can include everything from spaghetti with squid to beef with pears.

Nightlife & Entertainment

While it’s common to stop for a cocktail in the evening before turning in, nightlife in Florence is relatively calm. In fact, one of their most popular bars offers cappuccino and pastries in the morning, a light lunch in the afternoon, and a buffet dinner as well as cocktails in the evening. This bar, known as Caffe degli Artigiani, is in the center of the artisan district.

The La Casa del Vino is a popular wine bar near the center of town. If you’re looking to try some of the top wines in the area of Tuscany or even find some less common wines from all over the country, you’ll want to stop by. To go with the extensive wine list, there is a menu of light snacks that includes meats, cheeses, crostini, and salads.

Getting Around

Getting around by car in the city of Florence is nearly impossible. Much of the city is off-limits to drivers. Of those streets that are drivable, many are narrow and might even be one-way. If traveling by car is necessary, you’ll want to take a taxi. However, taxis are quite expensive. The best way to get around Florence is on foot.

In fact, it’s possible to walk from one side of the city to the other in less than an hour. If your feet are getting tired or you have a longer distance to travel, a bus system is available. You can find tickets at local convenience stores.

Accommodations

If the city of Florence had a theme, it would be luxury. From the historical sites to the most modern hotels, from street food vendors to well-known eateries, Florence is the epitome of luxury. If you’d like to experience that firsthand, be sure to research your accommodations. If you’re familiar with the Four Seasons brand, you may know what to expect from the Four Seasons Florence.

However, Florence is home to some very unique accommodations as well. The Palazzo Vecchietti features just 12 bedrooms and suites along with two apartments. Each is named after famous Italian artists.

This 16th-century Palazzo has been turned into a luxury bed-and-breakfast of sorts, with meals being served in a common area on the top floor. A luxury Florence hotel with more of a retro feel is the Continentale. Weather

You may want to avoid July and August when planning a trip to Florence. January is usually the coldest month with temperatures in the low 40s, Fahrenheit. While the average temperature in July is in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, the humidity can make it feel unbearably warm. The best times to travel to Florence are in the spring and fall. Attractions

You’ll find the attractions in Florence mostly based on the history and food of the region. While the Statue of David is arguably one of the most popular sights to see in Florence, getting in to see Michelangelo’s famous artwork can take some time. Lines are usually very long, but it’s worth it.

You may also want to stop at Piazzale Michelangiolo , a terrace overlooking the city. The skyline of Florence seen from this terrace is the same often seen on postcards. Late afternoon or early evening are ideal times to visit as the crowds have died down.

There is no shortage of museums to visit while in Florence. Gucci Museo, or the Gucci Museum, is quite fun and a bit different than most other museums in the area. An archeological museum, the Museo Archeologico, features much of the regional history prior to the Medicis.

The Galleria dell’ Accademia is home to the Statue of David and other popular exhibits such as several Stradivarius violins and famous paintings. Be sure to see the Uffuzi Gallery as well to see the Renaissance period masterpieces.

Enjoying the Wine That Makes Florence Famous

While one of the most popular tourist activities in Florence is wine tasting, be sure not to miss out on the beauty and history of the city itself. Florence may be a small city compared to some, but the experiences had during even a short vacation here will last a lifetime.

With these spruced-up tips, you’re all set for a mesmerizing day trip to Cinque Terre, where every moment promises to be a cherished memory. Adventure awaits! 🌟🇮🇹🌊🌼

Kim enjoying her time on a boat tour in Cinque Terre.

The Amalfi Coast , situated on Southern Italy’s Sorrento Peninsula, is known for its upscale glamour. With dramatic cliffs and terraced lemon groves, towns like Positano and Ravello stand out. While accessible by car, it can get busy, and its cuisine highlights are seafood and limoncello. On the other hand, Cinque Terre in Northern Italy exudes a rustic, old-world charm. It features terraced vineyards and colorful cliffside homes. The area is best explored by train, and it’s famed for its seafood and pesto. So while the Amalfi Coast offers luxury and historical richness, Cinque Terre promises a relaxed, authentic Italian vibe. Both are amazing in their own right, and the choice depends on personal preferences. 🇮🇹🌊🍝.

If traveling by train, which is a common mode of transportation to Cinque Terre, the journey from Milan usually takes about 3 hours, while from Florence it takes roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the specific train service and connections. It’s always a good idea to check current train schedules to get an accurate estimation of travel times.

Yes, you can do Pisa and Cinque Terre in one day from Florence. However, I wouldn’t recommend it. While it’s doable, you’ll likely feel rushed, missing out on truly soaking in the charm and essence of each location. Cinque Terre has so much to offer, and squeezing both of these into a single day will not give you the experience you’d hoped for.

In my opinion, while each village in Cinque Terre has its unique allure, I personally find Riomaggiore and Manarola to be the most picturesque. Their vibrant houses, perched on rugged cliffs, overlooking serene harbors offer breathtaking views. These two villages truly capture the quintessential beauty of Cinque Terre.

The Wrap-Up

Manorola offers stunning views all throughout the day, but also make sure to view the sunset while here.

In wrapping up, it’s clear that a day trip from Florence to Cinque Terre is a decision you won’t regret. It promises to be an unforgettable adventure filled with stunning landscapes, charming villages, and amazing experiences.

Whether you choose to explore just one gem or all five of these coastal treasures, each village offers its own unique charm and captivating beauty. From the golden sands of Monterosso al Mare to the romantic allure of Manarola, the panoramic vistas of Corniglia to the lively harbor of Vernazza, and the quaint charm of Riomaggiore, you’ll find yourself immersed in the enchantment of Cinque Terre.

And if you want to take your adventure to the next level, don’t forget to include a boat tour in your itinerary. It’s the perfect way to experience these coastal wonders from a different perspective, with the shimmering waters as your backdrop.

So, set off on your day trip, create cherished memories, and let the allure of Cinque Terre sweep you off your feet. Adventure awaits, and this coastal paradise is ready to captivate your heart! ❤️

Why Take This Tour:

If you are visiting Cinque Terre on a day tour from Florence for the first-time, this semi-private tour is my top-pick for you . The reason is that this small-group tour will have a maximum of 8 people so offers a very intimate and relaxed experience.

You will have the opportunity to take a boat ride between Manarola and Vernazza and get free time to explore both locations on foot. For your day trip, I recommend to explore only 3 villages instead of all 5, so you can really enjoy more time in each one and get to explore the beauty of Cinque Terre without have to hurry!

“Our tour of Cinque Terre exceeded all expectations. Though it is a bit of a trip from Florence (2.5 hours) our guide Yaris made the journey comfortable. Upon arriving at each town, Yaris provided the easiest pick up and drop off points. Cinque Terre is a breathtaking place with beautiful views. Throughout our day we had plenty of free time to explore and get lunch and we even enjoyed complimentary gelato at our last stop. This was a great trip that I highly recommend.” Matt ( read more revi ews now )

In my personal opinion, I prefer Porto Venere than Pisa. Porto Venere is one of my most beautiful coastal towns in Italy . It is so unique, and there is so much more to see and explore here. He/she will follow the schedule according to the actual situation of ferryboats. She/he will be at your disposal and tell you many stories about this beautiful coastal area.

The Cinque Terre villages along the Li gurian Coast

When we say Cinque Terre, we refer to five old villages along the Ligurian Coast. They are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. To the UNESCO’s area belong also Portovenere and three tiny islands, Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. Moreover, this region is a marine protected area. The common feature is the charming atmosphere created by the many colored houses along the coast. Surrounding them, you find a very romantic environment with terraced vineyards and rows of olive trees.

The charming villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso

Usually our first stop is in the southernmost villages of either Manarola or Riomaggiore (weather permitting). Riomaggiore is the first village from the south, with parallel colorful stone towers on the cliffs. Manarola is the oldest one, with very narrow streets and pretty squares. Vernazza has a small natural harbor, a small beach and a church facing the marina. Very often people consider it the most elegant town for its portals and facades. Monterosso in the biggest village and is famous for its Fegina Beach, the only sandy beach along the coast.

In the old streets of these beautiful villages, you can buy typical products in the local shops. You should try the Ligurian pesto sauce , Limoncino , Honey , Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Wine .

Enjoy Monterosso and its sandy beach

Monterosso is the northernmost the Cinque Terre (Five Lands). A small promontory divides the town in two parts. On one side, you find the famous Fegina Beach . It is used by many locals during the summer season. On the other side, you find the old town with romantic narrow alleys. They are full of local shops, bars and restaurants. You will enjoy some free time here. Our Staff will be glad to suggest you where to go and what to do. If you wish, you can even relax on the beach or swim in the beautiful clear waters! According to Forbes (2006), it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world . In Monterosso, you also find ruins of the Old Castle , a Capuchin Convent and the Church of St John.

**There is no hiking on this tour. However, we do not recommend it to people with walking difficulties.

How to Take a Day Trip to the Cinque Terre from Florence – 4 Ways

Are you in Florence (or heading there soon) and dreaming of a day trip to the colorful villages of the Cinque Terre?  The colorful cliffside villages, breathtaking views from the hikes between the five villages, freshly baked focaccia and handmade pesto…

I’m a mamma of three living in Tuscany and I’ve been helping plan trips to Italy since 2004. I have worked in the Cinque Terre and have visited many times with friends and family.

I’m often asked how to visit Cinque Terre on a day trip from Florence – for those who don’t have enough time to dedicate a few days, but really want to see the area.

I’m not overly-enthusiastic about Florence to Cinque Terre day trips, because it’s a long journey to and from the area, but I understand that it’s on many visitors’ bucket lists.  So, let’s see how we can make it happen for you!

Below I’ll walk you through some pros and cons of a Florence to Cinque Terre day trip, and then we’ll go over the four main ways to day trip to the area.

Fun Fact:   Cinque Terre in Italian means ‘five lands,’ for the five main villages of the area: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Florence to Cinque Terre – A Visual

As you can see, Florence and the Cinque Terre aren’t that close to each other.  Florence is about 170km (just over 100 miles) from Riomaggiore, the southernmost village of the Cinque Terre.

Reasons to Visit the Cinque Terre on a Day Trip from Florence

You don’t have enough time to dedicate a few days to a visit to the Cinque Terre but you dream of seeing them !

You’re craving pesto and focaccia from the source!

You’ll be happy to see them and visit a village or two but you’ll be ok if you don’t see everything (or all of the villages).  There’s just not enough time in a day.

Reasons to Skip a Florence to Cinque Terre Day Trip

You’re visiting during the winter .  It’s not worth it to get all the way there and spend the day in the rain.

You’re looking forward to taking epic photographs of the area.  It’s best to photograph the area in the morning or evening, and the timing won’t work out on a day trip from Florence.

You or someone in your group has mobility issues . The Cinque Terre is a challenging place to visit with mobility issues. It can be done, but requires extra planning and extra time while you’re there.

You’re traveling with small children .  If you want to have an enjoyable family visit with little ones, plan on spending more than a day. Otherwise, you’ll feel rushed trying to see the area while changing diapers, making time for naps, etc. Also, one of the best parts of the Cinque Terre are the walks between the villages, which require hiking (except for the Via dell’Amore).

You want to see all of the villages . There’s not enough time to really see them all in a day.

You want to hike between all of the villages and spend time in them. You can do the hike in a day, but don’t plan on spending time enjoying the small villages or really soaking up the area.

How to Get From Florence to the Cinque Terre

There are four main ways to take a day trip from Florence to the Cinque Terre:

  • Take the train
  • Hire a private driver
  • Join a day tour

Let’s take a look at each of them.

Take the Train from Florence to the Cinque Terre

Boy stands at window on bus looking out at Cinque Terre village.

If you’re an independent traveler and feel confident on trains in Italy, you’ll have no problem taking the train to the Cinque Terre from Florence.

This is the least expensive option, and there are plenty of trains to and from the Cinque Terre.

You’ll need to purchase tickets for the train from Florence to the Cinque Terre.  The closest Cinque Terre village to Florence is Riomaggiore.  There are no direct trains between Florence and Riomaggiore.  The journey takes between 2.5 (2 changes) and 3 hours (1 change).  You will change in Pisa and/or La Spezia.

I buy my train tickets online or using the Trenitalia app, but you can also buy them at the Florence train station at the ticket window or using the machines.

Please note that La Spezia is not part of the Cinque Terre, so you need to get to one of the five villages (see the chart below).

Good To Know:   Since the 2-change journey is shorter, I recommend taking it.  Don’t get stressed about the changes – you have plenty of time (usually 20-30 minutes).

Helpful Tip:   If you’re planning to start your village-to-village hike in the north, take the train to Monterosso al Mare.

Good To Know:   If you plan on purchasing the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card (it covers the trail fees between Monterosso – Vernazza – Corniglia and the regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia), just buy your train ticket from Florence to La Spezia (and back).  Once in La Spezia, use your Cinque Terre Treno MS Card.  Please note that you do not have to have the MS Card to travel by train in the Cinque Terre – you can also buy regular train tickets!  If you’re hiking a lot, it may make more sense to buy individual tickets.

Train Station Names

Good To Know:   Corniglia is tucked into the hills and isn’t attached to its train station.

Good To Know: Buying your return ticket doesn’t save you any money, but it will save you from waiting in line to buy your ticket back to Florence.

Drive from Florence to the Cinque Terre

View of countryside and Apuan Alps from the road in Versilia, Italy.

Another option is to drive from Florence to the Cinque Terre and back for your day trip.  This option gives you flexibility for your day and timing, and if you’ve already got a rental car , it may make sense financially.  The extra costs will be gas, tolls, and parking.

The major disadvantage is you have to stress a little bit (or a lot) about parking.

I have driven into the Cinque Terre (years ago) and was able to find a place with a very expensive parking rate. I would not recommend this as the roads are hairy and parking is scarce.

I have also driven from Florence to La Spezia, parked there, and used the trains from La Spezia to access the Cinque Terre.  This is a much better option, and it’s surprisingly easy.  Here’s the lot where I park .  There’s a Coop grocery store on the short walk between the lot and the La Spezia Centrale train station so you can pick up snacks if you need to.  You can also park in the garage under the La Spezia train station.

Remember – don’t leave any valuables in your car (even hidden).

Hire a Private Driver to Take You to the Cinque Terre

Hiring a private driver ( NCC – noleggio con conducente ) is the priciest option, but it also allows you do be totally hands off and just enjoy your day.  You can be flexible with timing and where you go (to some degree – it’s not easy for drivers to move from village to village).

You can see my recommended Tuscany NCCs on my Resources Page .

Take a Day Tour from Florence to the Cinque Terre

Boy walks down stone street in Vernazza, Italy.

Taking a day tour to the Cinque Terre is a great not-too-expensive option if you don’t want to worry about organizing anything, catching trains, etc.

However, you also lose flexibility in your schedule.  You don’t get to choose which villages to visit, and you may not get as much time as you want in some villages.

While this option is less pricey than hiring a private driver, it will cost more than taking the train to the Cinque Terre on your own.

Here’s an example of a day tour to the Cinque Terre from Florence: From Florence: Cinque Terre Day Trip & Optional Light Hike The 12-hour tour includes:

  • a comfortable bus ride between Florence and the Cinque Terre
  • train tickets for the day for travel between the villages the tour visits
  • stops in Vernazza, Monterosso, and Manarola
  • an optional guided hike (additional cost) or free time in Manarola

I just went on this day tour with my son and we had an amazing time! You can read all about it in Cinque Terre Tour From Florence – Our Experience .

What to See and Do On Your Cinque Terre Day Trip From Florence

Hike between the villages.

Boy runs on trail above the colorful village of Manarola on the left.

Spend some of your time of the trails of the Cinque Terre National Park.  The well-maintained trails give spectacular views of the villages and the sea.  I’ve done the main hike (the Blue Trail – 12 kilometers, 7.5 miles) many times and never tire of it!

If you want to go off the beaten path, that’s also possible, usually by hiking a little higher up.  Grab a trail map or just look at the wall maps in each village (take a photo so you can bring the map with you). I’ve done upper hikes with friends and we’ve had a blast but also encountered less well-marked and manicured trails.

I prefer to hike the Blue Trail from north to south (starting in Monterosso) because you get the harder hiking done first.

If you just want to stroll and enjoy the views, walk the Via dell’Amore (path of love).  It’s closed as I write this, but is expected to open in July 2024.

Important:   Always check for trail closures .  Sometimes there is too much rain and the possibility of landslides.  For safety reasons, trails close (it happens often, especially in the spring).

Good To Know:   You’ll be asked to show your Cinque Terre card if you’re hiking on the trails between Monterosso – Vernazza – Corniglia.  Keep your card accessible.

Go on a Ferry Ride

Taking a ferry in the area is highly recommended, as it gives you a new perspective on the Cinque Terre that you can’t get from land.  Choose any of them!  If you want a more private experience, you can also hire a private boat ride.

Good To Know:  The ferries don’t run in the winter.

Hand holds up bread with pesto in a village in the Cinque Terre in Italy.

Did you know pesto is originally from Genoa in Liguria, just north of the Cinque Terre?  The sauce, made up of basil, garlic, pine nuts, parmesan cheese, and olive oil is a treat you can’t miss on your day trip!  If you don’t sit down for lunch, you can get takeaway pizza or focaccia with it as a topping (this is what we usually do!).

Snack on Focaccia

Along with pesto, the region of Liguria is also the birthplace of focaccia!  My boys love getting focaccia in the Cinque Terre because it’s different than what we get where we live in Tuscany ( schiacciata – like a ‘squashed’ focaccia).

You can get it in the Cinque Terre at any of the villages, and you can take it with you on your hike between the villages.  Focaccia is a perfect portable snack or meal for the trail!  Or, grab some and enjoy it at the sea.

Take a Dip in the Sea

Waves crash on pebbly beach. Rocky cliffs in back right.

Speaking of, it seems a bit silly to visit the Cinque Terre without dipping at least your toes in the sea!

The water can be chilly, but you’ll see plenty of tourists in the water in the spring, and the beaches are crowded from June through early September (and sometimes longer!).

The easiest beach for a swim is Fegina Beach in front of the new town of Monterosso al Mare (it’s sandy and big), but you can also swim at the beach in front of the old town of Monterosso or from the rocks in the villages of Riomaggiore, Corniglia and Manarola.  Vernazza has a tiny beach (sandy), but it’s so small that it gets packed quickly.

Helpful Tip:   If you don’t feel like packing a bulky towel, bring a scarf to use as a beach towel. I bring a thin muslin baby blanket.

Explore the Villages

Woman in orange coat stands next to orange building covered in vines in Monterosso al Mare's old town. Arch on left and people in street past arch.

The villages, from north to south, are: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Monterosso al Mare – This is one of the easiest towns to visit and the large, sandy beach (the main one of the five villages) is perfect for a swim or relaxing rest under a beach umbrella.  There are public and private beach options.

Vernazza – You’ll likely see plenty of people carrying around Rick Steves’ turquoise guidebooks here.  He’s a big fan of the area and is a big fan of Vernazza.  I love spending time in the small piazza on the harbor, walking out along the left side of the harbor, and wandering the tiny lanes.

Corniglia – I think tiny Corniglia is the most underrated village in the Cinque Terre.  It’s one of the quietest (but it’s not quiet, don’t get your hopes up) because it’s a little more difficult to access from its train station.  Admire the lemon groves and get a lemon gelato or granita!

Manarola – Relax on the rocky shore (if you can get comfortable), take a dip in the sea, and take photos of the colorful village.

Riomaggiore – The largest village in the Cinque Terre, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less charming than the others.  Check out the views from the castle.

Tips for Your Florence to Cinque Terre Day Trip

Check the Weather – And pack appropriately!  If rain is called for, make sure you’re dressing appropriately.  If you’re traveling outside of summer, I’d bring a rain jacket just-in-case.  If you’re day tripping to the Cinque Terre in the summer, make sure you’ve got sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc), as there’s not a lot of shade, especially if you’re out hiking.

Bring Water and Snacks – Yes, you can buy water and food in the Cinque Terre, but you’ll want to have some with you at all times.  And, you’ll enjoy your Ligurian focaccia more if you’re not hangry.  You can also refill your water bottle at public fountains in the villages.

Wear Comfortable Shoes – Even if you’re not planning on hiking, you’ll still be walking in the villages, and possibly on rocks at the sea.

Cinque Terre Card – First, there are two different cards – one includes trains and the other doesn’t.  Second, you may not need one!  You only need one if you’re planning on hiking Monterosso – Vernazza and/or Vernazza – Corniglia.  And, don’t buy one if you’re hiking in the off-season!  The off season is typically November through mid-March (but always check the official site ).  You do not need the special Cinque Terre train card – you can also buy single tickets – do the math to see if the card makes sense for you and your group!

Stay Flexible with Dining – While the food is amazing (think seafood, pesto, and snacks like Ligurian focaccia), the draw of the Cinque Terre is the scenery and the hiking.  So, spend your time on those, and make the food second tier here.  For example, choose a restaurant with a view vs a place where you’re eating inside and downstairs.  Or, get lunch to go and picnic on the water or on the trail.  Make the most of your day in the Cinque Terre!

Be Prepared for Crowds – Unless you’re visiting in the winter, expect to see crowds in the Cinque Terre.  The trails and towns now begin to get crowded in April and they remain through late September (or even October).  Crowds mean you’ll see lots of people on the trails, you may need to wait to take photos at certain spots, you may need to wait for the next train, and some restaurants may be booked at lunch.

Don’t Cut it Close With Transport – I can’t stress this enough if you’re planning a day trip to the Cinque Terre.  Allow some ‘breathing room’ for your day.  For example, don’t plan on taking the last train back to Florence (and risk missing it).  As someone who’s missed ‘the last train’ a few times, I can tell you it’s not fun (or cheap) to find alternate ways back to your city and hotel.

Day Tripping from Florence to the Cinque Terre with Kids

private day trip from florence to cinque terre

While I think adults can pull off a day trip to the Cinque Terre from Florence, it gets a little more complicated with kids.  Whether or not it’s a good idea for your family depends on:

  • The ages of your kids – it’s a tough place to visit with toddlers; it can be hot for hiking with a baby in the summer with no shade; you’ll need to spend time changing diapers, organizing naps, etc.
  • How active your kids are and if they enjoy walking
  • What you plan on doing in the Cinque Terre – hiking, swimming in the sea, exploring the villages
  • The time of year you’re visiting – visiting when you can’t swim is less exciting for kids
  • The predicted weather – avoid the big journey to the Cinque Terre if it looks like it may rain

I’ve visited the Cinque Terre with a baby and we had a pleasant time that didn’t include any hiking.  We took boat rides, had leisurely lunches, and lounged at the beach.

private day trip from florence to cinque terre

Planning a Cinque Terre day trip from Florence is an excellent way to visit this iconic site on the Ligurian coast without having to take too much time away from your jam-packed trip to Italy. While Cinque Terre is a dreamy destination looking to fulfil any traveler’s Italian travel needs, its location is a bit off the tourist path for a classic Italian travel itinerary .

Consequently, if you’re hoping to witness the marvel of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cinque Terre without spending a lengthy amount of time in the area, taking a day trip is the perfect option to explore this stunning corner of the Liguria.

Getting from Florence to Cinque Terre

By organised tour.

While many people prefer to visit locations such as Cinque Terre alone and explore independently at their own pace, others prefer to visit with an organised tour.

Visiting Cinque Terre with an organised tour gives a social environment as well as takes the pressure off of planning and transportation. If you’re under the latter, the following tours are ideal options for a Florence to Cinque Terre day trip.

This full-day tour or this full-day tour is perfect for those who have a keen interest in hiking. With pick up and drop off directly from Florence, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the five Cinque Terre towns as well as take part in a 3.5-mile hike or boat tour with a local guide, offering unique insights into the region.

Another option is this full-day tour or this full-day tour that offers pick up and drop off from Florence in a comfortable coach with a tour guide, and time to explore four of the five villages making up Cinque Terre. On the tour, you’ll also be given the opportunity to dip into the local Ligurian waters and enjoy Cinque Terre the way the locals do.

Finally, if you prefer to go on a smaller tour then a number of options such as this small-group tour or this fully private tour .

Village of Vernazza

If you decide to visit Cinque Terre independently, the easiest way is to take the train. Aside from being the easiest mode of transportation, it’s also the cheapest and most enjoyable way to reach the Italian Riviera.

From Florence’s Santa Maria Novella Station, you’ll find regular Trenitalia services throughout the day (around one every hour) to La Spezia Central Train Station, your next point of travel before heading onwards to Cinque Terre.

There are no direct trains to the villages of Cinque Terre before La Spezia, so changing trains in the port city of La Spezia is a necessity. You can view train schedules here .

After a journey of around 2 ½ hours from Florence to La Spezia, the next and final leg of your journey to Cinque Terre will be to take the scenic Cinque Terre Express to whichever village(s) you’d like to visit during your time in Cinque Terre.

Trains run around every 20 minutes and cover the route from La Spezia to Levanto, with all five villages (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manorla and Riomaggiore) connected in between.

Manarola Train Station

Although not the most convenient or quickest method of transportation, the bus is also an option.

Bus companies such as Flixbus or Busitalia offer routes to La Spezia in around 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours depending on traffic, and from there you’ll need to either take the Cinque Terre Express train or a ferry boat ride to your chosen village(s) of the region.

If you decide to take the Cinque Terre Express, continue with the guidance in the train transportation category of this article.

Otherwise, if you wish to take the ferry to Cinque Terre from La Spezia, it’s important to know that the ferry only runs seasonally between March 25 and November 1 and that the ferry does not stop in the village of Corniglia, as it’s the only village without water access.

Individual ferry tickets between the villages and La Spezia vary in cost depending on your departure and arrival points. You can also take a speedboat tour from La Spezia.

But, if you’re planning on hopping around the Cinque Terre region, an unlimited ticket is available for purchase with unlimited ferry rides between the ports of Levanto, La Spezia, and Portovenere, as well the villages of Cinque Terre.

City of La Spezia

If you’re hoping to drive when seeing Cinque Terre in one day, there are a few important key points to know and keep in mind.

Cars aren’t allowed in any of the five villages of Cinque Terre, so your best option will be to take the 2-hour drive from Florence to La Spezia.

From there, it’s best to try and find a spot at La Spezia Station’s car park and then take the Cinque Terre Express to Cinque Terre, although it can be extremely difficult during the spring and summer to find spots. If you need to book a car for your trip, you can browse Rentalcars.com .

Alternatively, you can drive to the outside perimeter of the Cinque Terre villages to park and then walk into the villages, but parking is in high demand in these areas and you can expect to pay at minimum, a high daily price for parking.

Aside from expensive parking costs in La Spezia and the villages, other prices such as tolls can become quite expensive, making your journey to Cinque Terre by car quite pricey, with the added inconveniences previously mentioned.

My recommendation is to leave the car and head to the train station for a quick and affordable day trip.

Old Town of Riomaggiore

Cinque Terre Day Trip Itinerary

Although I do highly recommend visiting all five unique villages, this is best if you’re visiting the region for a longer Cinque Terre itinerary as opposed to a day trip.

For one day, it’s best to choose around 3 of the villages to spend your day in to immerse yourself in the culture and atmosphere of a few rather than rush to make your way around five.

As for getting around the villages, I recommend purchasing the Cinque Terre Card for unlimited train transportation on the Cinque Express, which will save you money in comparison to purchasing individual tickets.

For the sake of an unforgettable view at sunset to close the day, your trip will start at Cinque Terre’s oldest and second-to-last village of Vernazza – that is, unless you simply want to enjoy the Monterosso to Vernazza hiking trail.

Vernazza is a stunning medieval village that is easily one of the most famous and visited towns of Cinque Terre, with good reason.

Known as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Vernazza’s lively, colorful atmosphere and stunning views are unbeatable, making it a must-visit village.

Vernazza Old Town is characterized by its narrow, winding streets, ancient buildings, and stunning views of the sea.

Wandering through the quaint streets and alleys of Vernazza transports you back through time and the main square of Vernazza, Piazza Marconi, the heart of Vernazza, offers charming insights into the local, everyday life of Vernazza along with opportunities to shop, eat and grab a coffee to begin your day.

Located at the highest point of Vernazza, the Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia is worth visiting during your one day in Cinque Terre, offering stunning views looking over the turquoise Ligurian Sea.

As a historic church that dates back to the 13th century, the church is not only a religious site but also an important cultural and historical symbol for Vernazza, keeping the village together in times of natural disaster. In Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles, the church has a simple yet elegant interior, adorned with intricate decorations.

A short walk from the Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia will bring you to the Doria Castle. This medieval fortress, perched on a hill overlooking the village, offers a captivating glimpse into the town’s history and provides breathtaking views of the coastline.

You can explore the castle’s ancient walls, towers, and courtyards, immersing yourself in its rich past. Inside, you’ll find a small museum that showcases artifacts and exhibits related to the area’s history.

Vernazza - one of the five towns of Cinque Terre

The second Cinque Terre village that you’ll visit is easily the most overlooked and undervalued of the five, Corniglia. Corniglia is often missed, as it’s the only village without water access, but it’s a dreamy pocket worth settling into.

The perfect off-the-beaten-path destination, Corniglia offers a tranquil and secluded atmosphere, in comparison to the other villages overflowing with busy tourists.

As a village with an abundance of local character, pastel buildings, picturesque views, and a relaxed vibe, Corniglia’s Charm will make you wonder why the town is often forgotten, but glad that this only gives you more space to enjoy the village.

Get a glimpse of local life at the village’s main square at Piazza Largo Taragio, and visit the village’s local church, the Church of San Pietro to fully understand the heart and soul of this peaceful village nestled in the heart of the Cinque Terre National Park.

For those keen to go wine tasting in Cinque Terre to enjoy the local varieties, Corniglia is the perfect spot, as it’s the home to one of the most famous wines of the Cinque Terre DOC.

The La Polenza vineyard in the leafy vineyard area of Corniglia is a great spot to head to enjoy a local wine tasting, sit back, and relax.

If you’re hoping to take a dip into the buttery Ligurian Sea, Corniglia is the optimal village to visit. Although Corniglia itself does not have a beach, you can venture to Guvano Beach, located near the town to enjoy the water without a large crowd.

It’s likely at this point in your day you’ve built up an appetite, and Cinque Terre is a great location to be hungry. Corniglia is full of local restaurants serving up local Ligurian delicacies such as fresh fish and seafood, pesto al Genovese and fluffy, salty focaccia.

My suggestion for Lunch is to head to A Cantina de Mananan , a quaint restaurant located in the heart of Corniglia.

Corniglia

Built on a high rock, 70 meters above sea level, the last village you’ll visit is the striking and romantic village of Manarola.

With picturesque, colorful homes cascading down the cliff lining the village, it’s easy to say that Manarola is also the most recognisable and photographed village of Cinque Terre.

The heart of Manarola is its small marina, which provides a picture-perfect setting with fishing boats gently bobbing in the water. From the marina, stroll along the waterfront promenade, explore the charming narrow lanes, and take in the idyllic village full of rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and friendly locals.

At the top of the town, you’ll find the main square, Piazza Papa Innocenzo IV, along with one of the most iconic landmarks in Manarola, the Church of San Lorenzo. This medieval church, with its striking bell tower, stands proudly in the village and is a testament to the town’s historical significance.

For hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, Manarola offers direct access to the Via Dell’Amore (The Way of Love), a famously beautiful path beginning in Manarola and leading to the village of Riomaggiore.

If you’re interested in getting some hiking in with a remarkably unforgettable view amongst the contrast of the emerald greens of the region against the deep blues of the sea, make a point to even just walk a small portion of the trail.

For famously outstanding panoramic views of Manarola, make your way to the Punta Bonfiglio viewpoint past the Marina of Manarola.

While there, you can just hang out outside while taking in the famous views of the bright charming village, or visit the local bar Nessun Dorma, to enjoy an aperitivo or glass of sciacchetrá, a sweet, fortified wine made from the local grapes of Manarola.

It’s safe to say that there’s no better way to wrap up your day than by taking in the evocative, watercolour sunset hues of Manarola.

Sunset in Manarola

For those who don’t have much time, below is a quick summary of this 14 day itinerary. Later in this guide, we’ll share more detailed information about what to do, where to stay, and where to eat at each place.

  • Day 1-3: Rome (3 nights)
  • Day 3-5: Tuscany (2 nights)

  • Day 8-11: Cinque Terre (3 nights)
  • Day 11-12: Verona (2 nights)
  • Day 12-14: Venice (2 nights)

We followed this two-week itinerary in the summer of 2023 with our two daughters (aged 15 and 11). We all fell in love with the culture and lifestyle of Italy and were enamored with its ancient history and modern flavors.

We had 12 nights; but I’ve added an extra night to Tuscany and Cinque Terre to take it to 14 days, which in hindsight, is what we wish we did.

We had four nights in Paris before arriving in Italy, and if we were to do it again, we’d drop France and just spend the extra time in Italy.

We loved Paris, but much preferred Italy and it would have saved us money and exhausting travel time.

The Ultimate 2 Week Italy Itinerary

Below is how we recommend you spend 14 days in Italy, covering Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Verona, Cinque Terre and Venice!

Later in the guide, we’ll discuss how to get around Italy and how to navigate this itinerary.

Stop 1: Rome, The Eternal City (3 Nights)

Begin your Italian adventure in Rome , where ancient ruins, Renaissance art, and delicious cuisine converge.

Rome is the capital city of Italy and the former capital of the Roman Empire. It’s a city that receives over 10 million international tourists a year, making it one of the top 20 cities in the world.

And there’s a reason for this! The city is packed with historical attractions and world-famous landmarks, including the Seventh Wonder of the World, the Colosseum. Don’t miss out on a chance to walk the ancient Roman Forum and marvel at awe-inspiring Roman engineering at the Pantheon and immerse yourself in the city’s millennia-old history.

Rome is a walkable city, with chances to discover hidden gems in the backstreets. You can indulge in authentic pasta dishes at local trattorias, and don’t forget to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain for good luck.

Rome’s enchanting atmosphere will set the stage for the wonders that lie ahead.

Here were the highlights for us on our three day stay in Rome. Click on the links to learn more about each experience.

  • Roman Street Food Tour . An absolutely must for foodie fans who want to learn more about Rome’s cuisine. It’s not all pizzas and gellato, I promise you!
  • Roman Forum and Palatine Hill and the Colosseum . No trip to Rome is complete without seeing the Colosseum and ancient ruins of the Roman Forum. We recommend you do to a guided tour of this so you can skip the lines and learn about the history and engineering from a knowledgeable guide.
  • Vatican City Tour , the world’s smallest country and home to the Catholic Church. The Vatican can be explored in a day, but it’s also best to do a guided tour so you can skip the lines – especially for the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel that sees waiting times of up to 3 hours.
  • The Pantheon, a former Roman temple and Catholic Church, and the final resting place of famous Roman artist Raphael, as well as Italy’s first king, Victor Emmanuel.
  • Trevi Fountain , an iconic landmark known for its intricate baroque design with statues and turquoise pool. Throw a coin over your left shoulder for good luck.
  • Spanish Steps, a picturesque old staircase connecting Piazza di Spagna to Piazza Trinità dei Monti.
  • Explore Trastevere (and other cool Rome neighborhoods)
  • Wander the Streets of Rome
  • Rome Catacombs, which are located just outside the city, and are a network of underground passages housing tombs of Rome’s Christians and Jews in the 5th century.

Recommended Tours of Rome

  • Street food history tour of Rome
  • Guided tour of the Colosseum
  • Guided walking Tour of Vatican City
  • Pantheon Guided Tour
  • A Go City attraction pass may save you money on attractions.

As our apartment rental host told us, “ choose a restaurant, any restaurant, they’ll all be good. It’s Trastevere. Forget waiting in line. ”

So that’s my advice to you – it possibly works for all of Rome.

Stay away from the touristy piazzas and head to the side streets and surrounding neighborhoods for fantastic food in Rome. Here are some a couple of suggestion:

  • Mama Eats in Trastevere . Our favorite restaurant on the trip – 100% gluten free and I’m talking pastas, pizza and tiramisu. At an affordable price. They can make dishes non-gluten free as well.
  • Gelateria del Teatro is also one of the most appreciated and loved ice cream parlors in Rome in the artisan field since 2006.
  • Fiore has great street food – perfect for lunch and quick snacks.

We loved staying in the Trastevere neighborhood. We could walk to all top Rome attractions from there while having the experience of staying in a more local area with fantastic food options and bustling nightlife.

Plus, the streets are so pretty!

We booked this lovely home rental (it was spacious and lovely with a fantastic host) and also considered this  apartment rental in the same neighborhood .

Stop 2: Tuscany, Rolling Hills, Charming Villages and Grapevines (2 Nights)

Next, venture into the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany , known as Italy’s wine growing region.

Experience the romance of the region as you explore vineyards, olive groves, and charming hilltop towns.

Sip on world-renowned wines in Chianti, wander through the medieval streets of Siena, and marvel at the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Tuscany’s beauty is not just in its scenery but also in its warm hospitality and delectable cuisine.

We loved our Tuscan farm stay and could have easily stayed longer, which is why I recommend three nights, instead of our rushed two!

Tuscany is a huge region filled with many small villages, attractions, wineries, and more.

Plan your trip well and focus on the villages and area near to your farm stay – which is one of the best things to do in Italy! Click on the links for more information.

  • Stay at a Tuscany Farm Stay , this is the best way to feel the laid-back, authentic lifestyle of Tuscany. Ours was incredible! Some of the best wine I’ve ever had.
  • Take a Tuscany Cooking Class . We did ours at our farm stay, but you can find them across the region. Tuscan food is different from most Italian cuisine, specializing in cheese and, of course, Florentine Steak.
  • Wine Tasting, a must-do when visiting Tuscany. We did one at our farm stay, but there are plenty of places that offer wine tasting in the small Tuscan towns.
  • Civita di Bagnoregio , a unique and picturesque 7th century town on hill with incredible architecture. It’s famous for its pedestrian bridge which connects to Bagnoregio village.
  • Bagni San Filippo , a small hot spring with mineral rich pools and beautiful waterfalls.
  • Fosso Bianco hot springs , which are better for a swim and offers a chance to relax with mud masks
  • Visit Sienna for a day , a medieval city in Tuscany known for its historic buildings. Our favorite duomo of Italy, Siena Cathedral, is located here.
  • I also heard great things about San Gimignano , which is another medieval town known for its well-maintained watch towers.

Tours in Tuscany

  • From Florence: Day Trip Pisa, Siena & San Gimignano w/Lunch  (World Heritage + Wine)
  • Day tour of the wine region Chianti, and visit San Gimignano, and the medieval town of Siena !
  • Wine tasting experience in Montepulciano!  (said to be the best wine area in Tuscany)

We mostly ate at our farm stay, but we have a full post on some great restaurants in Tuscany .

Here are some of the places we liked the most:

  • La Vecchia Latteria in Siena was one of the best gelatos we had in Italy.
  • Caffè Fiorella in Siena has great coffee.

Read more: See the best places to visit in Tuscany and a road trip through Chianti.

I’ve mentioned it enough now to let you know we loved our Tuscan Farm Stay at Tenuta di Mensanello. I thnk an agritourismo stay is the best way to enjoy Tuscany.

You can read our full post with all the details on our agritouismo at Mensanello.

It had everything: rustic working farm experiences, gorgeous views, and their own wine, beer, olive oil, pasture-raised pork, and farm to table experience.

See rates and availability for Tuscan Farm Stay at Tenuta di Mensanello here.

Stop 3: Florence, Renaissance Splendor (2 Nights)

A short journey from Tuscany brings you to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.

The city is known for its art culture, and is where you can admire masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli at the Uffizi Gallery, as well as see the original Statue of David by Michaelangelo.

Don’t miss a chance to climb to the top of the Duomo for panoramic views of the city, and stroll across the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River.

Florence’s artistic legacy and architectural wonders will leave an indelible mark on your Italian sojourn.

Florence is packed with attractions, museums, art galleries and tours. Just wandering around is an adventure.

We were able to see and do a lot in our two days stay because we joined some walking tours for a highlight overview.

It saved us from getting overwhelmed as well! Click the links for more in-depth information and stories.

  • Boboli Gardens , is a historic park created for the Medici family, but was opened to the public in 1766. It’s a fine example of Renaissance landscaping.
  • Villa Bardini Gardens , another peaceful park with colorful flowers and Renaissance architecture. Don’t miss the views from the terraced bar!
  • Wander Oltrarno Neighborhood , a vibrant and quirky neighborhood full of boutiques, cafes and bars.
  • Tuscan Food and Wine Tour in Oltrarno . This is a great chance to find the best Florentine Steak in the city and learn about the regional cuisine of Florence.
  • Catch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo or Ponte Vecchio . The Piazzale Michelangelo has sweeping views across the whole city, whereas the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval stone closed arch bridge, is lit up in hues of soft yellow and orange during golden hour.
  • Florence Guided Walking Tour , this is the best way to see the highlights and also allows you to skip the line to see The Statue of David and climb to the top of the Duomo.
  • Statue of David at Accademia Gallery, is a must-see for anyone visiting Florence, whether you’re an art lover or not. It’s one of the world’s most famous statues and is much more impressive in real-life than in pictures. You can see the outlines of muscles and veins, the attention to detail is extraordinary.
  • Uffizi Gallery is a must for art lovers and is where you can find original pieces from the Renaissance period’s greatest artists, including Raphael, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and more.
  • Piazza della Signoria is a bustling square outside Palazzo Vecchio and is a great spot to grab an espresso and do some people-watching.
  • Pitti Palace is a Renaissance palace that now contains an art museum.

Recommended Tours in Florence

  • Timed-entry ticket to David at the Accademia
  • 3-Hour Florence Highlights Walking Tour
  • Entry ticket to Boboli Gardens
  • Get your skip-the-line entry ticket to Uffizi Gallery

You’re always one corner around a great place to eat in Florence. Plus, it’s the home of gelato, so enjoy. As they say, When in Florence…. eat gelato every day.

And Florence is also the place to eat Florentine steak and visit a wine window.

  • Mercato Centrale for food market
  • La Carraia was the best gelato I had in Italy
  • La Terrazza Rooftop B ar (small and busy so get here early)
  • Caffè Gilli oldest cafe in city famous for espressos
  • Babae Wine Window
  • Ditta Artigianale Riva d’Arno has great coffee
  • Trattoria BBQ in Oltrarno has great Florentine steak
  • Ostaria dei Centopoveri – you’ll thank us for this local favorite – cheap with great food.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Palazzo dal Borgo in Florence which we booked using points. It had a great location, a separate room for the girls, and included breakfast. See rates and availability.

These places also come recommended:

  • Repubblica Firenze Luxury Apartments | UNA Esperienze  (Bucket list luxury Florence accommodation + with stunning views)
  • Bellavista Impruneta Hotel Ristorante (A taste of the countryside close to the city)
  • Hotel David (Family owned in a great location)

Stop 4: Cinque Terre, Coastal Paradise (3 nights)

From Florence, head to the ruggedly beautiful Cinque Terre region, which is a string of five seaside villages perched along the Italian Riviera.

Hike scenic trails with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, relax on tranquil pebble beaches, and savor freshly caught seafood.

The charm of Cinque Terre lies in its simplicity, where each village tells a unique story against a backdrop of cliffs and azure waters.

Cinque Terre is an ideal region to stay for three nights as it offers you a little more relaxation after a busy week in Italy.

So, take plenty of time to wander slowly. It was our girl’s favorite place we visited in Italy.

  • Hike the coastal Blue Trail between the 5 towns. Monterosso to Vernazza is said to be the most beautiful section.
  • Catch a sunset in Manarola
  • Take a boat tour of the Five Lands – the best thing we did and a great way to see the towns from a different perspective.
  • Relax on the beach in Monterosso , our favorite beach in Cinque Terre.
  • Kayak at Monterosso and admire the architecture from the water
  • Head to Riomaggiore for a vibrant and unique nightlife experience.
  • Try the local wine !

Recommended Tours of Cinque Terre

  • 4 Hour Speedboat Tour from La Spezia
  • 3 Hour Sunset Boat Tour Experience
  • Cinque Terre Wine Tour

We  stayed in an apartment in La Spezia  and caught the train in to the Five Towns.

I would have much preferred to stay in Monterosso al Mare  for two nights and using this as a base to get around.

From here, it’s easy to visit the other four towns either by hiking, by boat, or by train.

Riomaggiore is also a good place to stay with more accommodation options.

Below are some places we dined at during our visit to Cinque Terre and highly recommend.

  • Bar Gianni Franzi  in Vernazza – exellent lunch by the water
  • Nessun Dorma in Manarola has drinks, charcuterie boards, and views.
  • Buy the fried seafood cones – cheap and easy to go food!
  • Sorbetteria Gelateria 5 Terre in Manarola is 100% gluten free crepes and ice cream.

Stop 5: Verona, A Taste of Romance (2 Nights)

As you approach the end of your 14 day Italy journey, visit Verona, the city that was said to inspire the story of Romeo and Juliet.

Wander through well-preserved medieval streets, explore the Roman Arena, and visit Juliet’s balcony.

Verona’s romantic ambiance and cultural richness make it a perfect prelude to Venice.

Verona is one of my favorite places in Italy (I’ve been twice) and I prefer it to Venice, but you don’t need a lot of time here.

However, I think Verona is a great base as you can easily catch the train into Venice for the day, which is cheaper than staying in Venice itself.

  • Julite’s Courtyard and Balcony, the number one attraction in Veronia. You need tickets for the balcony, but it’s worth it. I loved it!
  • Verona Arena, a huge, well-preserved Roman Amphitheatre built in 30 AD.
  • Torre di Lamberti , an 84-meter-high tower built in 1172. This is a great place to see views of the city.
  • Castelvecchio Museum , set in a medieval castle known as a military base. It’s surprisingly good!
  • Roman Theater, not to be confused with Verona Arena, is a great place to catch a performance in the evenings.
  • Go for a bike ride around the city . This is a great way to admire the architecture and feel the beat of the city. Our bike rentals came with our apartment stay, but you can find bike-sharing rentals in Piazza Cittadella.
  • Giusti Gardens is a beautiful, manicured garden behind a palace. It was my favorite garden that we visited on our trip and is known for its hedge maze.
  • Piazza Bra, the largest piazza in Verona and is famous for its cafes, restaurants and bustling atmosphere.
  • Piazza delle Erbe , formerly the town’s forum in Roman Times, and now a peaceful square.

Recommended Tours of Verona

  • The Verona Card  (best way to save money. Includes Juliet’s Balcony, Lamberti tower, Castelvecchio, Roman theater, Verona Theater and more)
  • Arena di Verona Opera Ticket  the hottest ticket in town!
  • City Highlights Walking Tour of Verona  Best overview of the city’s history and culture.

Below are some of the places we ate at in Verona and loved!

  •  Bim Bum Bam Cafe/ Bar in Veronetta neighborhood for cheap Apertivo
  • La Costa in Bra had delicious and affordable pizza with views of the Verona Arena
  • Cafe Filippini on Piazza Erba – great gluten free carbonara and tiramisu

We were meant to stay at The Hotel Milan and Spa, but it does not have a 4-person room so we were placed in their sister apartment rental property The Verona House, which was excellent, and we could still use the amenities at the Hotel Milan & Spa.

We chose it because of the extraordinary views of the Verona Arena from their exclusive Terrace Sky Lounge and Bar.

Obviously, with views like this, you know the hotel is centrally located to all the action. See rates and availability here for Hotel Milan & Spa and click here for rates and availability here for Verona House.

Stop 6: Venice, The Grand Finale (2 Nights)

Finally, arrive in the enchanting city of Venice , where winding canals and historic architecture create a magical atmosphere.

It’s known as the sinking city, since the whole city is built on stilts over the water and is slowly sinking each year.

Venice is a walkable city and is best seen on foot, but you can also cruise along the Grand Canal in a gondola, which is an iconic thing to do in Venice.

Be sure to explore St. Mark’s Square and get lost in the narrow alleys of this water-bound city.

Venice, with its timeless beauty, concludes your two-week odyssey through the splendors of Italy.

  • Visit the Doge’s Palace , a Venetian Gothic palace that was once the residence of the Doge of Venice and a government office. It was one of my favorite attractions in Venice, but make sure you get the first tour of the day.
  • Bridge of Sighs , also part of the Doge’s Palace tour, is a beautiful bridge that connects the palace to the prisons.
  • Rialto Bridge , the oldest bridge on the Grand Canal and the most beautiful, as well as the Rialto Bridge Market for souvenir shopping.
  • St. Mark’s Basilica , the cathedral church of the Patriarchate of Venice and the most beautiful. Be sure to admire the plethora of golden mosaics that adorn its walls.
  • Acqua Alta bookstore , a hidden gem in Venice that’s not so hidden anymore. Each room is stuffed with books, and it has a garden with a book staircase that you can climb (great for Insta pictures!)
  • Walking Tour, St. Mark’s Basilica & Gondola Ride , this is a great way to spend a day in Venice learning about its history and seeing the main sides.
  • Admire the view from Accademia Bridge , one of the four bridges on the Grand Canal. From here, you get a wonderful view overlooking the Rialto Bridge and the canal.
  • Explore Dorsoduro district . Venice’s student district, for indie shops, urban eateries, and vintage fashion boutiques.
  • Take a day trip to Murano and Burano to see how Venetian glass is made.

  • Choclate tasting at Vizio Virtue Cioccolateria
  • Suso gelato – our last gelato in Italy was a good one!
  • Al Vapiretto Trattoria , that served delicious pasta and pizza at a reasonable price.
  • Da Fede on the Campo Margherita in Dorsoduro. Delicious last Italina meal!
  • Bacaro Risorto Castello for great cicchetti – a must to eat in Venice.
  • Harry’s Bar which created the Bellini

As mentioned, we stayed in Verona and traveld to Venice for the day. If staying in Venice, here are a few Venice hotels to consider:

  • Ca’di Dio-Small Luxury Hotel : top reviews for location, design and service
  • Hotel Belle Arti : Guests like the location and value for money
  • Hotel Moresco : Guests love the Venitan styling, service and location.

Getting around Italy is simple. You can either hire a car or get around by train.

You won’t need a car for most of the destinations on our itinerary – really only Tuscany.

After adding up the cost of train travel (for four of us) versus car (plus taking into account convenience and saving time) we decided to rent a car in Rome and dropped it off upon arrival in Verona.

Then we used it to travel between destinations.

The big issue was getting from Cinque Terre to Verona – it would have taken up an entire day by train, as you had to backtrack to Milan first to get a connecting train to Verona.

We had free parking in Cinque Terre, so only had to pay extra for parking in Florence.

Trains are pretty good in Italy, so this may be a preferable option, especially if you have more time.

We did encounter traffic between Florence and Cinque Terre, but it did not delay us too much. We caught at rain from Verona to Venice which was effortless and cheap.

Find your car rental at DiscoverCars.com (our preferred booking site) and purchase your train tickets via Omio .

In Summary: Italy Two Week Tour

That was our magical two-week tour of Italy, and as you can see, there’s a lot of great places to visit in this itinerary.

I wish we had longer, there is so much in this area to see and do.

If you have more time, you could consider adding Lake Garda and Lake Como which are also in this region and could be an excellent addition to your Italy itinerary if you have more time.

You could also explore the South of Italy, and add Naples or Sorrento to visit Pompeii, but I would skip the Amalfi Coast since it’s way too touristy now – Positano is also very expensive, and we personally think Cinque Terre has more charm. But that’s just us!

So now you’re ready for an unforgettable journey through the landscapes of Northern Italy, where you can taste the flavors and absorb the history of Italy from Rome to Venice.

This itinerary has the perfect blend of ancient wonders, artistic masterpieces, and the natural beauty that defines this captivating country. Buon viaggio!

Are you picturing images of Roman ruins, vast stretches of vineyards, and scenes of gondoliers singing “O sole mio” through the winding canals of the floating city? Then you’re conjuring up images of Italy! If […]
